From a European perspective, the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg is an outstanding hub for foreign trade and trade fair
activities. One of our region’s traditional strengths lies in contact
with other countries. For centuries, Nuremberg merchants have
been renowned for their flourishing trading activities. Today,
around 2,500 companies in the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg maintain intensive foreign trade relationships with
partners all over the world, many of them generating more than
three quarters of their turnover outside Germany. At 48 percent,
the region’s export quota is above average. The products and services of our Metropolitan Region stand for innovation, quality,
flexibility and reliability. The Nuremberg Region holds the EU
designation “Gateway to Eastern Europe”, and it has also greatly
intensified its Asia-Pacific activities. Nuremberg is home to the
“European Office” of Shenzhen (PR China), the German Office
of the China Communications and Transportation Association
(CCTA) and the German-Chinese Cooperation Office for Trade
and Commerce (DCKIH). The Nuremberg Exhibition Company
NürnbergMesse, one of Europe’s fastest growing trade fair companies and one of the 15 largest trade fair venues in the world,
makes a major contribution to the international character of
the Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg. With 160,000 square
metres of exhibition space and a turnover of around EUR 120
million, NürnbergMesse is as big as the Leipzig and Stuttgart

The speed of development of information and communication technologies has paved the way for the global information society. The Nuremberg Region is not only a centre
for printing technologies within Europe. Manufacturers of
construction elements and end devices, control technology,
call centres and data and IT service providers also shape the
face of the region. Additionally, key technologies for the
future of information and communications are developed
and produced here. Did you know, for example, that the MP3
standard was developed in Central Franconia?
“Medical Valley” is an appropriate name for a region which
is home to Siemens, the diverse research institutes of the
Erlangen University Clinics and Germany’s largest commu-
nal hospital, the Nuremberg Clinic. Medical technology is
one of the fields of growth being promoted in the region
through numerous projects and initiatives such as the IZMP
Innovation Centre for Medical Technology and Pharmaceutics in Erlangen.
Tremendous development potential is forecast for the energy
and environment sectors of the economy. We lead the way in
development, with innovative power station and environmental technology, rational energy utilization and broadbased fundamental research within companies, colleges and
other institutes of further education. In addition, the Energy
Technology Centre and countless medium-sized companies
form the backbone of our economic region.

innovativen Entwicklungen in der Metall-, Kunststoff- und
Keramik-Industrie schaffen wir zukunftssichere Arbeitsplätze in allen Kompetenzfeldern der Region.
Im nationalen Vergleich nimmt die Region Nürnberg eine
Spitzenstellung in der Automatisierungstechnik ein. Neben
Weltmarktführern wie Siemens oder der Baumüller-Gruppe
gibt es eine Vielzahl von innovativen mittelständischen
Unternehmen, die Komponenten, Systeme, Software sowie
Dienstleistungen für die Automation und Produktion anbieten. Vorangetrieben durch das Netzwerk „Automation
Valley Nordbayern“ trägt die Branche wesentlich zum Erfolg industrieller Abnehmer aus dem Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, der Medizintechnik, der Energietechnik und der

Project Future – we set the pace
We meet the requirements of the growing volume of traffic with
projects such as the Driverless Metro, City Logistics, Freight Centre
and the Centre for Transportation & Logistics “Neuer Adler” (CNA).
Companies such as Siemens, INA Schaeffler, MAN and Diehl have
formed partnerships to ensure mobility going forward. For example, companies from the Region of Nuremberg supplied 30 percent of the value added in the Transrapid Pilot Project in Shanghai. Materials research as cross-sectional technology includes the
sub-clusters plastics processing, ceramics, metal and lightweight
construction as well as coatings. The regional Competence Initiative New Materials (KINEMA), the Centre for Materials Analysis in
Lauf, the New Materials Centre in Fürth and the Central Institute
for New Materials and Process Technology (ZMP) offer their services
and the transfer of innovative materials and processes to industry.
Be it with ultra-lightweight construction, compound materials or
coatings technology, through the research in materials science
being carried out at our colleges and through innovative developments in the metals, plastics and ceramics industry, we are creating
future-oriented jobs in all fields of competence within the region.
On a national level, the Region of Nuremberg ranks top in automation technology. Alongside global market leaders such as Siemens
and the Baumüller Group, there are numerous innovative mediumsized companies offering components, systems, software and services for automation and production. Driven by the network “Automation Valley Northern Bavaria”, this sector is making a substantial
contribution to the success of industrial customers in the fields of
mechanical and systems engineering, medical technology, energy
technology and the print industry.

ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl and the Wallenstein town of

Ansbach, the seat of the government of Central Franconia. An

tournament courses in the region. Anybody wanting to enjoy
the great outdoors once business is done in the city centre is
spoilt for choice in the surrounding areas of Franconian Switzerland, Hersbruck Switzerland, the Aisch Valley and the Franconian Lake District.
