To celebrate 20 years of Angel Squad, a Winnipeg holiday tradition, we want to show the world that Winnipeg has the most Angels in it! SPONSOR INQUIRIES: Vernelle Mirosh, Manager of Partnerships and Special Events [email protected] 204.788.8469 misericordiafoundation.com Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Help us Prove that Winnipeg has the Most Angels! Join us this December as we attempt to break the world record for Largest Gathering of Angels! Winnipeg is full of Angels, we know this. In 2014, Winnipeg made world news feeds with a Pay-itForward trend of citizens doing good deeds anonymously for strangers. In 2014, Manitoba was once again named the most generous province in Canada, with the highest percentage of annual tax filers donating to charity. In 2015, we will make world news again, for a truly magical holiday feat; hundreds of Angels gathering for yet another hometown good deed. On December 1, 2015, we are inviting all the Angels in Winnipeg – and beyond – to come and get a pair of wings and halo and a number. Our goal is to gather at least 1,200 Angels to break the world record! St Mary's student Angels, 2014 event Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Current Record-Holders Hauzenberg, Germany The largest gathering of angels was achieved by 1,039 participants, in Hauzenberg, Germany on December 13, 2009. 1,039 participants set the record in Germany in December 2009 Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Who We Are Our Angels are volunteers, including students from many local schools; Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, St. Mary’s Academy, Balmoral Hall School, Kelvin High School, Centre Scolaire LéoRémillard, and Mulvey School. Angels are also sponsors, local celebrities, and Misericordia staff as well as many other members of the community. We wave at morning commuters and give hot chocolate or coffee, donated by Starbucks, in exchange for donations. While about 400 volunteers come each year to be Angels, this year we are planning for over 1200 people to break the record – with extra Angels being sent from Misericordia Health Centre, local schools, and existing partnerships, we believe we can do it! Every year, people hear about Angel Squad in the news, on the radio, on their social media feeds – but this year, we will have an even bigger story to tell. Some of our youngest Angels come from Mulvey School and sing songs for our donors! Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Why We Do It Angel Squad raises funds for Misericordia Health Centre. It is a chance to spread joy during the festive season and to make a difference. Angel Squad helps to bring life enrichment programs to residents living in long-term care, enhances patient spaces inside MHC, and supports a wide variety of health-care priorities. One special project partly funded by Angel Squad has been the Great-West Life Rooftop Garden and Solarium - on the seventh floor, a peaceful, private sun-filled space for the people living at MHC. It also supports MHC’s many flagship programs, including Urgent Care, PRIME, and the Sleep Disorder Centre. Music programs offer life enrichment in long-term care at MHC Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Why You Should Do It The holidays are a perfect time to remind your customers about your company’s goodwill and community spirit. Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! A History of Winter Feats Other World-Records Broken Close to Home Longest Skating Rink in the World, Winnipeg The Red River Mutual Trail on the Assiniboine River and the Red River broke the record for the first time in 2008, when it took the record away from Ottawa. Winnipeg's Red River Mutual Trail is a source of hometown pride! Longest Winter Road, Manitoba - Ontario The 'Wapusk Trail' road (752 km (467 miles) in length) constructed each year between Gillam, Manitoba, and Peawanuk, Ontario, Canada, is thought to be the longest seasonal winter road in the world. Constructed each January on snow and ice, it gives road access for a few weeks to remote settlements around Hudson Bay until the warmer March weather forces its closure. Slurpee Capital of the World, Winnipeg According to 7-11, Winnipeg is a long-time undefended champion when it comes to which city consumes the most Slurpees. Like our skating rink, this world-record is a source of pride for many citizens! Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! More information about MHC Misericordia Health Centre is proud to have four flagship programs not offered anywhere else in Manitoba: 1. BUHLER EYE CARE CENTRE This dynamic Centre, including 14 in-patient beds, is the largest comprehensive surgical and treatment centre in Western Canada. More than 25,000 treatments and assessments and 12,000 eye surgeries are performed each and every year, treating cataracts, macular degeneration, cancers of the eye and more. The Buhler Eye Care Centre is also home to the Misericordia Eye Bank, a place to coordinate eye tissue donations for transplantation, which can give the gift of sight back to patients. The eye bank also supports education and research, enabling exploration into new treatments and technologies, so that MHC will remain at the forefront of the best treatments for Manitobans. 2. PROVINCIAL HEALTH CONTACT CENTRE (PHCC) The PHCC operates over 30 inbound and outbound calling programs – receiving 700,000 calls each year in more than 110 languages. These programs include the Breast-Feeding Hotline, Triple-P-Parenting, TeleCARE, Dial-A-Dietician and Health Links-Info Santé, where nurses provide health information and advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 3. SLEEP DISORDER CENTRE The Sleep Disorder Centre consists of the provincial sleep disorders diagnostic laboratory, sleep clinic and treatment service. Sleep specialist physicians from the University of Manitoba’s Section of Respirology, Department of Medicine, review more than 5,400 sleep studies annually by centre staff in the diagnostic laboratory. Staff study everything from breathing problems to Restless Leg Syndrome to Insomnia. 4. URGENT CARE CENTRE Our Urgent Care Centre opened in 1998 as a made-in-Manitoba program; the first of its kind in Canada. Urgent Care specializes in handling non-life threatening medical emergencies, providing assessment and treatment for urgent health concerns. It plays a strong role in providing support for city emergency departments, helping more than 43,300 people a year. In addition to health assessment and treatment, patients also have access to diagnostic testing and other health-care disciplines such as social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, pharmacy and respiratory therapy. Whether you have broken an arm, your baby has a fever, or you are living with mental illness, we are there to help. Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! Misericordia is also home to the following programs and services: PRIME – Services for Seniors In keeping with a vision to be a leader in healthy aging, Misericordia Health Centre has been chosen as the second site for PRIME — a health centre for seniors, scheduled to open in May of 2015. The main focus of this program is to support seniors who have complicated health and social needs to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Donations are making this forward-thinking, crucial care program for Winnipeg a reality. Gifts to PRIME will allow Misericordia’s program to offer a full menu of services to 94 people (and their families) living in their own homes, but needing that extra bit of help. This beautiful new space has been purpose-built with our aging population in mind. AMBULATORY CARE This unique out-patient program includes rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and Easy Street – a unique mini-community where our patients can practice activities of daily living like banking and shopping. Ambulatory Care meets the needs of our community through diverse clinics: cast, wound and foot care, peripheral vascular disease and minor surgical procedures. MISERICORDIA HEALTH CARE FOR LUNGS The MHC for Lungs program is designed for people living with lung conditions including emphysema, chronic bronchitis or chronic asthma. Every year we have more than 600 clinic visits, teaching people about their disease: how to live with it and how to improve their quality of life. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING SERVICES If you need an x-ray, a CT scan or an ultrasound, MHC provides these in-demand services with excellence. Diagnostic imaging also includes a cardiology service and incorporates the Winnipeg outpatient location for the Manitoba Breast Screening Program. PEDIATRIC DENTAL SURGERY In 2005, Misericordia was named as a community setting site to help reduce wait times for pediatric dental surgery. Today, wait times are half of what they were when MHC started performing dental surgeries. Children over two years of age come to us to have their teeth repaired – so they can eat, sleep and just be kids again! We perform approximately 950 pediatric dental surgeries a year. Angel Squad – celebrating 20 years! LONG TERM CARE Misericordia Place is a 100-bed warm and inviting personal care home, providing quality care 24 hours a day. Misericordia Place is connected to Misericordia Health Centre via a convenient enclosed walkway. We are also home to 145 interim care beds, providing a comfortable home-like environment for these residents waiting to get into the personal care home of their choice. LABORATORY SERVICES Our laboratory services – operated by Diagnostic Services of Manitoba – provide a vital link to surrounding community clinics and to all of Misericordia’s programs. If you visit our Urgent Care Centre, for example, laboratory staff will draw your blood, perform the test and report the results to Urgent Care. Responding to Needs MHC REDEVLOPMENT & GROWTH Both Misericordia Health Centre and Misericordia Health Centre Foundation are governed by a Board of Directors. Directors are accountable to the communities MHC serves — including the Winnipeg Health Region and Manitoba Health — for ensuring that we are providing safe and compassionate care to our residents and patients. During this time of significant redevelopment at Misericordia, both Boards continue to be responsive to the changing health-care needs of Manitobans and advocate for an aging population. Misericordia Health Centre provides education and training to all care-givers, including physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers. For example, donor dollars are used to educate ophthalmologists of the future through the University of Manitoba’s Ophthalmology Residency Program, housed at Misericordia.
