LANGLEY PARK
ENVIRONMENT GROUP
Langley
Park
Environment
Group has had a very busy year.
The wild flowers were a huge
success and we have just had
the meadows topped ready for
next year. We continued to cut
the parish playing field and the
old recreation ground path with
the new ride on tractor, thanks
to a grant from County Durham
Community Foundation earlier
this year.
We have just finished work on
the big pond in Stobbilee
wetlands. This was achieved by
the incredible work done by all
our volunteers and members of
the public who chipped in, but
our thanks have to go out to all
the businesses that made it
possible. Brian Weatherall from
DCC who got us the clay, Owen
Pugh who delivered all 90
tonnes free of charge, Hire Base
The digger goes to work at the
wetlands site
Page 1
The newly filled pond down at the Wetlands
who supplied us with a digger
and small dumper truck for 8
days free of charge, HE services
who dropped the clay on the
edge of the pond for us,
County Durham AAP for putting
us in touch for the clay so a
huge thank you once again to
everyone who helped out..
We are pleased to announce
that the Parish Council have
arranged for electric lights to go
on the Langley Park village
Christmas tree this year. The
solar lights supplied by Langley
Park Environment Group will be
used on the adjacent trees. The
switch on date is set for
Thursday, December 10th at
5.30pm. Santa will be there as
will Stuart Wright with his
Carnival
street
organ.
Refreshments
in
the
St.
Andrews Methodist Hall will be
provided by Langley Park
Environment Group – sweets,
cakes, teas and coffees etc.
As mentioned earlier in this
article
the
Langley
Park
Environment Group is continuing
to cut the grass path around the
old recreation ground site and
emptying the bin on a weekly
basis. The grass cutting season
has now finished until March
2016 but the bin will still be
emptied. A new perimeter fence
is expected to go up around the
recreation ground next year.

DURHAM COUNTY
COUNCIL REPORT
Durham County Council has had
a reduction in funding of £28
Million, this year, from Central
Government with 2016/17 cuts
to be announced just before
Christmas. With all departments
in County Hall bearing the brunt
of reduced funding Durham
County
Council
are
maintaining the provision of
services with no increase in
Community Tax for the
most vulnerable.
At a cost of £20,000 parking
bays have been installed
opposite
May
Terrace
(there is room for 6
vehicles) these bays are not
reserved and can be used
by anyone. This will relieve
some
of
the parking
problems residents have on
this road and will also
protect the grass verges.

County Councillors Joe and
Barbara Armstrong are also
looking at costings for further
traffic calming schemes on Front
Street, Church Street and
around the Miners Institute.
There is new LED street lighting
throughout the village, a costly
exercise which lots of Councils
throughout
England
are
considering or have already
done, but an exercise that will
save the County Council £50
million over 5 years.
Your County Councillors are
supporting the funding bids to
refurbish Esh Village Play Park
and are looking at traffic calming
around the schools in the
village. We are supporting
Langley Park Primary School’s
scheme to drain and open the
playing fields for school and
community use, a continued
investment into the school and
village already started with the
community gym.
Many local groups in the ward
continue to be supported with
funding from the members’
initiative fund and the Mid
Durham Area Action Partnership
(based in the Miners Institute,
Langley Park).

MID DURHAM AAP
The Mid Durham Area Action
Partnership (AAP) was set up to
work with you, the residents of
Mid Durham, to improve the
quality of life within your area.
Wellbeing for Life
An exciting new FREE service
has been launched across
County Durham. The Wellbeing
for Life (WFL) service aims to
work in targeted communities
and
takes
an
innovative
approach to their wellbeing. In
Mid Durham the villages of Esh
Winning and Ushaw Moor have
been targeted for initial work.
The service will go beyond
looking at single issues and the
focus on illness, and instead
aims to take a whole-person and
community
approach
to
improving health and wellbeing.
The service can support people
with: healthy eating, weight
management,
weight
loss;
stopping smoking; increasing
physical activity levels; practical
cooking;
adult
learning
opportunities; finding out how to
volunteer and help others;
finding out how to get involved in
their community
The service works with the
public on a one to one basis or
in groups through a combination
of staff and volunteers. Mid
Durham does have another WFL
service operating within its area,
aimed at supporting our older
residents and is targeted at the
villages of Brandon, Burnhope
and Langley Park. For more

Help to work
The following is a brief case
study of how the employability
team can support those people
who are seeking work:
Page 7
Julie from Brandon contacted
the Employability Project after
she became unemployed. With
experience
in
retail
and
customer service her previous
job for 9 years had been as a
Workshop Support Officer with a
local organ manufacturer where
she
did
everything
from
receptionist, dispatcher, first
aider, ordering supplies and
deliveries – everything also
including making the teas! Julie
ideally wished to return to an
administration role particularly
dealing with customers and had
applied for numerous jobs
without success…. and admitted
her confidence when applying
for jobs was pretty low. Although
Julie had a CV, it did not really
reflect or promote Julies many
skills,
working
with
the
Employability Mentoring Officer,
a new CV was created along
with a covering letter. Numerous
jobs were identified and Julie
started to apply. Within a short
period of time Julie was
successful in gaining preemployment training with ‘2
Touch’ mobile phone company
progressing towards Call Centre
Operator. There then came an
offer as an Office Manager at
Todhill Farm near Willington.
Julie says: “The support and
knowledge I got from the
Employability Project, is what
gave me the confidence boost
that I needed, my CV was
desperate for a makeover, and I
was helped to do that and find
work
almost
immediately.
Thanks again.”

LANGLEY PARK LODGE
BANNER
From as early as 2006 moves
were afoot to bring the Langley
Park Lodge Banner back to the
village.
There have been 3 banners in
the history of Langley Park
Colliery. The first one from 1921
has disappeared and no trace of
it can be found. The second
banner commissioned in the
fifties, is now in storage at the
Durham Miners Association
headquarters at Red Hills all be
it in very poor condition. The
third banner from 1963 depicting
County Hall on one side and the
Sam Watson rest home on the
reverse was, after the colliery
closed in 1975, given to East
Hetton Colliery and is now on
display at Cassop School.
The Parish Council and the
Miners Institute are seeking to
return the second banner to the
village. Because of its very frail
condition, we are hoping to have
a replica of the banner made.
The banner will depict Council
Housing on one side (Park
Drive) and the Hermitage
Rehabilitation Centre at Chester
le Street on the reverse.
The Durham Banner Makers
have been approached with a
view to making a replica banner.
This firm has already made
replica banners for Sacriston,
Burnhope and New Brancepeth.
The cost for the project would be
approximately £8000 and the
carrying poles and other items a
further £1000.
The Parish Council are actively
seeking funding for this project
with the help of Andy Coulthard
of Mid Durham Area Action
Partnership.
It is intended to parade the new
banner at the Durham Miners

Gala and other suitable events

We have recently submitted two
grant applications to enhance
our fundraising and are awaiting
feedback. The Parish Council
has kindly pledged financial
support, along with the NUM
and CISWO.
LANGLEY PARK MINERS
MEMORIAL UPDATE
We are still working towards our
aim:
‘To raise sufficient funds to
provide the village with a
permanent
memorial
to
recognise the history of Langley
Park as a mining community.’
Our most recent fundraiser, a
coffee morning on Saturday 24
October, was well supported
and raised £350. We would like
to thank everyone who attended,
bought refreshments and gave
donations. We would also like to
thank those people who helped
us to organise and run the
coffee morning, as well as those
who donated cakes and tombola
prizes. We are delighted with the
ongoing support from the village.
If anyone was unable to attend
but would like to make a
donation, this can be done
anytime at the Miners’ Institute.
The proposed site for the
memorial is now on the edge of
the new housing development
on the site of the old Youth
Centre. This will allow the
memorial to be clearly visible to
residents and visitors upon
entering and leaving the village;
it is also a location easily
accessible for all.
We will continue to provide
updates via this publication,
along with our Facebook page.
Our next proposed fundraiser
will be a Christmas Hamper
raffle. Please look out for
posters around the village.
Thank you once again for your
continued support.

CRY UPDATE
The family of Robert Daniel
Smith would like to thank Esh
Parish Council and Durham
County Council for their kind
donation of £1000 in total to
Robert’s memorial fund, also the
people of Langley Park and
surrounding area’s for your
continued support, up to now we
have raised £11,566.
We will be holding more fund
raising events in the next few
months including a Christmas
shopping night with handmade
gifts etc. and a coffee morning to
help us reach our target of
£12,000 to hold two screening
days through Cardiac Risk in the
Young, for young people
between the ages of 14 and 35.
ST CUTHBERT’S
HOSPICE
St Cuthbert’s Hospice would like
to thank Amins Spice in Langley
Park for raising £600 during a
recent
charity
night.
The
restaurant, in Front Street,
donated a percentage of its
takings and held a raffle, with
many local businesses donating
prizes.
LANGLEY PARK
COMMUNITY GARDEN
We would like to advise that the
Community Garden has now
been locked up for the winter
and will re-open in early spring
2016.
We wish to thank everyone for
their support throughout the year
and really appreciate the lovely
comments and feedback which
you have given us.
Several people have given
donations for vegetables and
herbs which they have taken, all
of these donations will be reinvested into the garden next
year and hopefully there will be
a bumper harvest of vegetables,

herbs and fruit again! Please
keep an eye on our Facebook

weeks ago, start to pop through.
Thank you again for all of your
support and we look forward to
seeing you all in 2016.
REMEMBRANCE
SUNDAY 2015
Councillors, Clergy and many
local residents were present

the
Remembrance Day parade at
the Langley Park War Memorial.
As usual the parade was
preceded by a Church Service

Park and a ceremony at the
Grave of the Unknown Soldier.
After the Church Service
everyone made their way down
to the War Memorial for the
parade at which point the names
of all of the war dead listed on
the memorial were read out,
wreaths were laid by Councillors
and other Dignitaries, and the
Last Post was sounded by a
Bugler. This was followed at 11
am by a minute’s silence
observed by everyone present.

Request for donations
We are looking for donations of
LEGO for children to play with

school would greatly appreciate
it if you could bring them along

NEW BUSINESS FLIES
INTO LANGLEY PARK
Edward Jackson set up his flight
simulator following four years of
flight instruction at Newcastle
Airport for St George Flight
Training
and
later
with
Northumbria
Flying School.
Initially, it was designed to be a
hobby and something for his
plane-mad three-year-old son to
fly, but it soon evolved into a
viable training facility due to an
obsession
with
creating
something as accurate as
possible and Icarus Simulation
was born.
Edward gained his Airline
Transport Licence at Oxford
Aviation Academy in 2009, after
having saved as much money
as possible working in the
hospitality
industry managing
hotels, restaurants, bars and
cafes across this country,
France and New Zealand. Flying
has always been his passion,
and he feels at home amongst
the clouds flying light aircraft
and enjoys training students to
fly, seeing them off on their first
solo and ultimately getting their
December 2015
Private Pilot Licences and night
ratings.
Icarus Simulation was set up to
compliment PPL training and to
give many more people the
opportunity to experience what’s
involved in flying without the
associated costs. To do this, the
simulator needs to be as
immersive as possible, so no
external reference exists and
high definition LED TVs provide
exceptional
visuals.
Dualcontrols
allow
seamless
instruction and an external Air
Traffic Control Station, allows
students to talk to ATC through
a headset. The simulator is
designed to replicate a Piper
Warrior,
but
can
emulate other aircraft
including a Mooney
Bravo, a twin engine
Beechcraft, a Boeing
737 and 747 and an
F18. A number of
exciting challenges are
available for all levels
of ability.
See page 16 for
contact information.
