Liebe Mitglieder!
Glückwunsch zu dem erfolgreichen

können.
Uns erwartet ein ereignisreicher Monat.
Unser Prinzenball wird am 13 .Februar
stattfinden, und unser nächstes
Gartenfest ist bereits am 21. Februar. Wir

I plan to provide our Members with
agendas for upcoming Board meetings.
We have a tremendous amount of expertise within our membership, and I hope
to encourage more participation if more
information is shared. I also encourage
everyone to utilize the suggestion box,
which will be placed at the front entry of
the von Steuben hall.

We are working hard for both the second Gartenfest coming up and also the Quarter
Auction on Wednesday, March 9th. We know it will be fun for everyone attending.
The Kitchen will have food to purchase and the Bar will also be open. Vendors are in place
and are getting ready.
We are looking forward to our Wednesday meeting on February 10th. We will have a special guest speaker. Our very
good friend and long-time member of the GASC, George
Schamberger, will share his vast knowledge of his extensive
collection of Biersteins and other items.
There might also be a few small items he is willing to give
out as prizes. If this is not the case, you did not hear it from
me!
Please join us if you are there on Wednesday, February
10th.
Inge Freund
The date for the Edison Light Parade is fast approaching, so please
mark your calendars for February 20th! Construction on the
parade float is complete and it sits ready for decorating beginning the
Wednesday prior to the big event. Please contact Chris Kaelin so that he can coordinate
participants. We had a poor showing last year, and we had the best weather in years. Please
come out and help to show off your club, we always have a lot of fun.
On parade day, the staging area will once again be at Ft. Myers High School where there is no
place for parking. The end of the parade route will be at City of Palms park where there is plenty
of space for our cars. If you would like to participate, but do not want to drive, please contact
Chris so that he can procure a ride for you. The Caloosahatchee Bridge will close mid-afternoon
and float judging is at 4pm, so please arrive prior to that. We plan to bring a grill and cook dinner
again. No alcoholic beverages are allowed, as we will be on school property.
Trachten clothing is encouraged, but not exclusive. New members, if you have no "German
clothing", Chris may be able to help you. All participants are required to be "lit up". There are
the usual glow sticks available and there are 10 strings of LED lights with batteries, but if you
have something else that would illuminate you, please feel free to bring it.
If you have any questions, please direct them to Chris Kaelin: 239.565.6952 or
[email protected]. The best way to reach him is by text or email.

At the Range
Greetings from the Schützenverein:
I am a little late with our Schützen News from December, but better late then never.
We hope that everyone of you had a happy new year.
We had a little problem with the weather in December and lost a practice session due to too
much rain, but we will make it up in January.
Our Christmas party was again well attended and a great success thanks to our dedicated
members who brought desserts and a fantastic tropical fruit bowl.
We are getting very close to the travel trophy competition with Lantana, we will be hosting
the Lantana Shooting Club in our facilities on Sunday, February 28th and we are very confident, that we will win the trophy back.
Our February practice will be February 7th and 14th. Our last chance to fine tune our skill.
Gut Schuss, Heinz.

Gartenfest
Our first Gartenfest for this year, on Sunday, January 17th, was a great success, even though
we hade to move the whole event inside of the “von Steuben Halle” and “Edelweiss Halle” due
to weather conditions. Everybody worked together to make it happen.
The next Gartenfest takes place on Sunday, February 21st (noon to 5pm), and hopefully this
time the weather will cooperate.
The featured band for this Gartenfest will be our own “Hafenkapelle“ and yes they will play
some new dance numbers.
We are also very happy to announce the appearence of the famous “Budweiser Clydesdales“.
So bring your family and friends and have a great time!
The dates for the last two Gartenfests for this year are:

March 13th

April 17th
For infos and questions, please contact Gartenfest-Chairmann Steve Bauer.

Refugee crisis: Germany creaks under strain of open door policy
The realities of shouldering Europe’s
refugee crisis are coming home to
Germany, amid daily reports of clashes in
asylum seeker homes; bureaucrats
overwhelmed by a backlog of registration
claims and deep divisions within
chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative
ranks over how to manage the enormity of
the challenge.
Just weeks after Merkel responded to the refugee crisis with the declaration: “Wir
schaffen es – We can do it” – the euphoric mood has been replaced by a more sombre
response with the realisation that the newcomers are here to stay, with all the
consequences that entails.
School authorities are calling for at least 25,000 new teaching recruits to cope with the
large numbers of new pupils, police officers are being brought out of retirement in their
thousands, and the nation is being scoured for suitable accommodation as winter
approaches.
“The welcome parties in Munich, Berlin and elsewhere were great,” said the Munichbased Süddeutsche Zeitung in a recent editorial. “They showed a generous and open
Germany of which we can be very proud, headed by a chancellor who seemed to surprise
herself with her response, (and) tens of thousands of volunteers ... but now we’re in the
stark light of day which consists of overcrowded refugee centres and local authorities and
police stretched to their limits.”
Latest estimates, so far unconfirmed by the government, are that Germany might expect
as many as 1.5 million refugees by the end of the year, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan
and Iraq. There are no signs the numbers will let up in the near future, with one
government minister warning this week
that many women and children can be
expected to follow the males who made up
the majority of those making the journey
first. Merkel’s decision last month to “open
the doors”, particularly to Syrian refugees,
has attracted growing criticism even within
her own party as an estimated 10,000
people continue to arrive every day.

Flüchtlinge müssen inzwischen in

We are using the month of January to rehearse new music. We have several new
pieces of both German music and Big Band music. And, yes we also have some
new Latin numbers which are favorite dance numbers for many club members.
We will be playing for the February Gartenfest on February 21. We are also
playing for “ Febtoberst“ in Englewood on February 26 and 27. This is a
fundraising event for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. We hope to see you at both
events.

Funkenmariechen
A Rhineland Karneval Tradition
As we start a new Karneval Season, I would like to tell you a little about the “famous”
Funkenmariechen.
The name translates (loosely) to “Sparkling Girls”, called the “Mariechen”.
The name is derived from Maria and Mariechen is what little girls are lovingly called.
It is an old German tradition that these “Sparkling Girls” escort the Prinzenpaar as a guard
throughout the Karneval season.
Many years ago, I attended one of those original German Karneval celebrations in New York City.
There I had the opportunity to witness these “Funkenmariechen” in action. I was very impressed
by their program so I decided to bring this tradition to our club here in Cape Coral.
I designed and made all of those costumes and for almost 20 years, these “Sparkling Girls” have
been a nice addition to the Prinz and Prinzessin and their reign through the Karneval Seasons.
Now a younger generation took over the reign and as I watched them perform, I was very happy
that my idea from long ago has been carried on and will for years to come.

die Zähne sind locker, bevor sie ganz von uns gehen;
fahrt ins Gebirge, fahrt an die See,
genießt die Wärme, seid froh im Schnee.
Jetzt treibt Euch niemand, jetzt habt Ihr Zeit,
