Our trainings are mainly designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate within the Last Minute Offer. Aufgabe der Humboldt Graduate School ist es, den Doktorand/innen der Humboldt-Universität einen ausgezeichneten Rahmen für Ihre Arbeit sowie ein vielfältiges und überfachliches Angebot zu bieten. Das Angebot von Schlüsselqualifikationskursen richtet sich wesentlich an unsere Mitglieder, wobei auch für Individualpromovierende die Möglichkeit besteht, bei freien Kapazitäten im Rahmen des Last Minute-Angebotes an den Kursen teilzunehmen. In the context of the Excellence Initiative we have been able to enlarge our offer for workshops and events that are open to all doctoral candidates. We also have special offers for postdoctoral researchers for the first time this semester. Events in this category focus on communication with media and scientific presentation of research results in written and oral forms. Furthermore this section fosters training for young researchers’ didactical and pedagogical performance with our events “Teaching Skills for Junior Scientists” which is acknowledged as a module of the university teaching certificate by Berliner Zentrum für Hochschullehre. mAnAGemenT skIlls TrAInInG (mA) These interdisciplinary events are aimed at widening your personal career opportunities. Therefore we offer training in project and event management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers. CAreer plAnnInG (CA) Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully, we COACHInG (CO) We provide workshops on time- and selfmanagement to make sure you get support on organizing your dissertation. In addition to these workshops, you can also take advantage of our individual coaching. menTOrInG The goal of our mentoring program is to support your next career step. If you have still undecided career plans, you should participate in the peer mentoring to devolop appropriate ideas. If you already have a broad yet clear aim, you are welcome to participate in the one-to-one mentoring to find out how to get there ideally. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your writing projects done in time? During the 1-day workshop you analyze how you approach your writing projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. In a follow-up session we reflect on the effectivity of the learned techniques and behaviours in everyday life. We discuss practical problems found during the implementation phase and apply individual fine tuning. The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/ fellowship applications to various funding bodies (focusing on DFG, BMBF, EU, and other organizations if requested by the audience). Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” in preparation for the course. She holds a PhD in Physics (TU Berlin) and has published over ten peer-reviewed articles with over 200 citations. She has refereed for five international journals, including the prestigious Physical Review Letters. Dr. Christina Schütte (ProSciencia Beratungs-GmbH, Lübeck) was intensively involved in acquisition and management of funded research and education projects for the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, after finishing her PhD in Biochemistry in Bonn. Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination. To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies, your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy. He is currently research associate at the Berlin-based Institut für Europäische Politik. Matteo’s professional experience includes work with several NGO’s as well as teaching and research assistant and the London School of Economics. Mr. Simon Chaplin works as a trainer with a main focus on applications and presentations. He already conducted several seminars for graduation program participants with great success. He was born in Lichfield, England, and graduated in German Philology and International Management from Aston University with honors. His qualifications also include a degree from Zurich Interpreter and Translator School. This seminar is especially designed for PhD students who are working on a thesis or research paper in the field of mathematics. Participants will become familiar with various aspects of clarity which are essential in producing logical, reader-friendly, concise articles. As well as examining the various stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts, how to enrich one’s academic lexical repertoire and how to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts in the field of mathematics. We will also look at how to draft rapid prototypes so that arguments are organised in a coherent manner. Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” in preparation for the course. However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies: „Data hugging versus open access“. The workshop is suitable for PhD students who want to improve their effectiveness within their current PhD project (at least 6 months experience) as well as for late phase PhD students who want to plan an upcoming postdoctoral project effectively. Coping with stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within a team. In such situations, individual coaching could be beneficial. Die Promotion kann für den Doktoranden oder die Doktorandin – besonders in der Abschlussphase – eine ganz spezielle Herausforderung sein. Stressresistenz, Frustrationstoleranz oder Zeitmanagement können ins Wanken geraten und es ist nicht auszuschließen, dass Schreibblockaden oder Konflikte im Team auftreten. In solchen Situationen kann individuelles Coaching (Einzelcoaching) hilfreich sein. The relationship between doctoral candidates and their supervisors is usually very positive and based on trust. However, this does not mean that there will never be situations, in which opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so that it might be helpful to consult an external party. To help solve such issues, regular conflict consultation hours are offered for each doctoral candidate of the Humboldt-Universität. This way, serious problems between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may be resolved in advance, so that the basis for continuing to work together constructively can be re-established. Selbstzahler Von Promovierenden anderer Programme und Hochschulen wird eine Gebühr auf der Grundlage der Gebührensatzung der Humboldt Graduate School erhoben.
