The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide doctoral candidates
of Humboldt-Universität with an excellent framework for their work by offering
a broad and comprehensive education. Our trainings are mainly designed for
doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely
booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate
within the Last Minute Offer.
Aufgabe der Humboldt Graduate School ist es, den Doktorand/innen der
Humboldt-Universität einen ausgezeichneten Rahmen für Ihre Arbeit sowie ein
vielfältiges und überfachliches Angebot zu bieten. Das Angebot von Schlüsselqualifikationskursen richtet sich wesentlich an unsere Mitglieder, wobei auch
für Individualpromovierende die Möglichkeit besteht, bei freien Kapazitäten im
Rahmen des Last Minute-Angebotes an den Kursen teilzunehmen.
In the context of the Excellence Initiative we have been able to enlarge our offer
for workshops and events that are open to all doctoral candidates. We also have
special offers for postdoctoral researchers for the first time this semester.
Im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative haben wir unser Angebot an Workshops und Veranstaltungen, die für alle Doktorand/innen offen sind, erweitern können. Erstmalig in diesem Semester haben wir auch spezielle Angebote für Post-Doktoranden.

This section promotes the professional competence of young researchers. Events in this
category focus on communication with media
and scientific presentation of research results in
written and oral forms. Furthermore this section
fosters training for young researchers’ didactical
and pedagogical performance with our events
“Teaching Skills for Junior Scientists” which is
acknowledged as a module of the university
teaching certificate by Berliner Zentrum für
Hochschullehre.

These interdisciplinary events are aimed at
widening your personal career opportunities.
Therefore we offer training in project and event
management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers.

Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully, we

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This is not a writing course of the conventional sort. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your
self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well
during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your
writing projects done in time? During the 1-day workshop you analyze how you approach your writing
projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. In a follow-up session
we reflect on the effectivity of the learned techniques and behaviours in everyday life. We discuss
practical problems found during the implementation phase and apply individual fine tuning.
The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/
fellowship applications to various funding bodies (focusing on DFG, BMBF, EU, and other organizations if requested by the audience).
Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” in preparation for the course.

TRAINER
Dr. María Machón coaches scientists to improve transferable skills. She holds a PhD in Physics (TU
Berlin) and has published over ten peer-reviewed articles with over 200 citations. She has refereed
for five international journals, including the prestigious Physical Review Letters.
Dr. Christina Schütte (ProSciencia Beratungs-GmbH, Lübeck) was intensively involved in acquisition
and management of funded research and education projects for the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry
in Göttingen, after finishing her PhD in Biochemistry in Bonn. She set up ProSciencia, where she
focuses on funding acquisition and scientific management of technology driven research projects as
well as education and training.

The seminar aims at preparing you for the thesis defense by honing your presentation skills so you
can argue your points convincingly and think on your feet during the question and answers session.
Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in
simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal
procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination.
To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step
is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies,
your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The
third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy.

TRAINER
Dr. Matteo Garavoglia was educated at the universities of London (SOAS), Paris (IEP) and Berlin (FU).
He is currently research associate at the Berlin-based Institut für Europäische Politik. Matteo’s
professional experience includes work with several NGO’s as well as teaching and research assistant
and the London School of Economics.
Mr. Simon Chaplin works as a trainer with a main focus on applications and presentations.
He already conducted several seminars for graduation program participants with great success.
He was born in Lichfield, England, and graduated in German Philology and International Management from Aston University with honors. His qualifications also include a degree from Zurich
Interpreter and Translator School. He lives in Berlin since 1997.

This seminar is especially designed for PhD students who are working on a thesis or research paper
in the field of mathematics. Participants will become familiar with various aspects of clarity which
are essential in producing logical, reader-friendly, concise articles. As well as examining the various
stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts, how to enrich one’s academic lexical repertoire and how to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts
in the field of mathematics. We will also look at how to draft rapid prototypes so that arguments are
organised in a coherent manner.

Lorraine Mannion is Irish and studied “Interpreting and Translating French/German/English” at the
University of Ulster, Northern Ireland and the University of East Anglia, England. She has been working as an adjunct lecturer in English at various universities in Berlin and the new federal states since
1998. She is also a certified translator/interpreter for the Berlin notaries and courts and regularly
holds seminars in academic writing at several research institutes throughout Germany.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the first day are to understand the different kinds of scientific writing and their differing requirements, to know what some useful preparatory steps in writing are, to learn to develop
and keep to a plan for writing an article and to understand what is involved i ncollaborations with
co-authors.
Writing a review article in early stages of the PhD-project has several advantages. The aim of this
workshop is to provide you with the skills needed for writing high quality reviews. You learn to
organise dispersed information, to design knowledge maps and to plan text structures. Time-saving
techniques are trained and you are encouraged to start immediately with your writing project.
The objective of the second day is to understand how to achive the three essential elemanets of
scientific writing: accuranca of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing.
Please bring a copy of a review article to the workshop. Choose a review from your discipline, which is,
in your opinion, high quality.
Before the workshop participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research
article and to write a draft Abstract of the article.

academic writing, public speaking and university teaching (since 2009).

Technologies to exchange data are advancing rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox).
However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to
be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how
to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both
aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided.
In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange
are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies:
„Data hugging versus open access“.
The workshop is suitable for PhD students who want to improve their effectiveness within their current PhD project (at least 6 months experience) as well as for late phase PhD students who want to
plan an upcoming postdoctoral project effectively. In extensive hands-on exercises participants will

at eyelevel is an integral part of Dr. Hankeln’s work that he enjoys very much.

The first day of the course teaches you how to eliminate the typical reading mistakes which most people have internalized and maintained since primary school: regression, reading word by word, complete mental hearing. The second day entails the efficient preparation of the reading process and the

Konkretisierung bereits existierender Ideen für Promotionsprojekte. Beim zweiten Modul steht das
eigene Schreiben im Mittelpunkt. Es werden die folgenden Themen bearbeitet: Planung des Schreibprojekts, Schwerpunkte des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens, Gedankenstrukturierung und Präzisierung der Fragestellung.

The Peer Mentoring Program is designed for
doctoral candidates in our member programs
after 1 to 1.5 years of PhD studies and still
undecided career plans. Peer Mentoring offers
a structured exchange with other doctoral
candidates which is a good possibility to gather
knowledge on appropriate occupational fields.
It is also a way of making candidates aware of
their own skills and preferences, and encouraging mutual support.
The One-to-One Mentoring Program is designed for doctoral candidates in our member
programs after 1.5 to 2 years of PhD studies
with a broad yet clear aim. One-to-One Mentoring is based on interaction between an experienced professional in a chosen career field and
a doctoral candidate. One-to-One Mentoring
supports doctoral candidates in their transition
from their current position to their next career
phase.
Das Peer Mentoring Programm ist für Promovierende unserer Mitgliedsprogramme mit unklaren
beruflichen Zielen konzipiert. Es richtet sich
an DoktorandInnen nach 1 bis 1,5 Jahren ihrer

Einzelcoaching
A doctoral candidate may encounter particular
challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis,
especially during the final stages. Coping with
stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it
might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within
a team. In such situations, individual coaching
could be beneficial.
Die Promotion kann für den Doktoranden oder
die Doktorandin – besonders in der Abschlussphase – eine ganz spezielle Herausforderung
sein. Stressresistenz, Frustrationstoleranz oder
Zeitmanagement können ins Wanken geraten
und es ist nicht auszuschließen, dass Schreibblockaden oder Konflikte im Team auftreten.
In solchen Situationen kann individuelles Coaching (Einzelcoaching) hilfreich sein.
The relationship between doctoral candidates
and their supervisors is usually very positive and
based on trust. However, this does not mean
that there will never be situations, in which
opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so
that it might be helpful to consult an external
party. To help solve such issues, regular conflict
consultation hours are offered for each doctoral
candidate of the Humboldt-Universität. This
way, serious problems between the doctoral
candidate and the supervisor may be resolved
in advance, so that the basis for continuing to
work together constructively can be re-established. These consultation hours will be offered
by trained mediators and are free of charge.
Das Verhältnis zwischen Doktorand/innen und
Betreuer/innen ist überwiegend sehr positiv
und vertrauensvoll. Dies schließt jedoch Situationen nicht aus, in denen Meinungen so weit
auseinander gehen, dass externe Hilfe sinnvoll
sein könnte. Für diese Fälle ist die regelmäßig
stattfindende Konfliktsprechstunde für alle
Doktorand/innen der Humboldt-Universität
gedacht. Ziel ist es, Meinungsverschiedenheiten
zwischen Doktorand/in und Betreuer/in frühzeitig auszuräumen und wieder die Basis für ein
weiteres konstruktives Miteinander zu finden.
Die Sprechstunde wird von ausgebildeten Mediatoren abgehalten. Sie sind keine Angehörigen
der Humboldt-Universität oder der Humboldt
Graduate School. Die Inanspruchnahme dieser
Leistungen ist kostenfrei.

Handlungsalternativen zu entwickeln.
Fachliche Fragen bzw. Ratschläge stehen beim
Coaching nicht im Mittelpunkt, sondern Reflexion und Kommunikation.
The Humboldt Graduate School works with
coaches, who have gained various experiences
in the field of academia and are therefore
especially suited to help doctoral candidates.
A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to
five meetings.

OBJECTIVES
Although introversion and extroversion are well known and widely used in personality tests, there is
no training that helps academics apply these attributes to their professional communication. Introverted and extroverted persons, however, have very different ways of communicating. In academic
settings, both personality types face their own challenges: This workshop addresses these issues
for the first time in Germany and is unique in its design. It helps young scientists to understand
both their individual advantages and their needs as introverts or extroverts and to cope with specific
communication challenges that come with their own personality type or with the preferences of their
communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations and self-perception is added.
