Welcome at
Humboldt Graduate School
Willkommen an der
Humboldt Graduate School
The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide doctoral candidates
of Humboldt-Universität with an excellent framework for their work by offering
a broad and comprehensive education. Our trainings are mainly designed for
doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely
booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate
within the Last Minute Offer.
In the context of the Excellence Initiative we have been able to enlarge our offer
for workshops and events that are open to all doctoral candidates. We also have
special offers for postdoctoral researchers this semester.
Please note that we settle our trainings via the online course booking system
KuBuS. KuBuS offers you a high standard service in the selection of the courses,
since the information on individual courses can be more extensive than in this
booklet.
We hope that we can make a suitable offer for each of our doctoral candidates.
Should you have special wishes of suggestions, we will be happy to respond. Let
yourself be inspired by reading our program to visit the appropriate course. We
wish you every success in your projects.
Kurse anregen. Wir wünschen Ihnen viel Erfolg bei Ihren Vorhaben.

Our Offers
Our event program at Humboldt Graduate
School enables you to update and develop your
skills. Our Transferable Skills Training is divided
into different sections. Usually, the programs
cover the costs.
SCIENCE SKILLS TRAINING (SC)
This section promotes the professional competence of young researchers. Events in this
category focus on communication with media
and scientific presentation of research results in
written and oral forms. Furthermore this section
fosters training for young researchers’ didactical
and pedagogical performance with our events
“Teaching Skills for Junior Scientists” which is
acknowledged as a module of the university
teaching certificate by Berliner Zentrum für
Hochschullehre.
MANAGEMENT SKILLS TRAINING (MA)
These interdisciplinary events are aimed at
widening your personal career opportunities.
Therefore we offer training in project and event
management, management of personal knowledge as well as media training for researchers.
CAREER PLANNING (CA)
Holding a PhD is a big step towards an academic career. To manage this step successfully,
Unsere Angebote
we support you with workshops giving an
overview on current trends of research career
development in Europe and job application
practice. As networking is important for your
own career we encourage you to exchange
experiences with colleagues in our workshops
and lectures.
COACHING (CO)
We provide workshops on time- and selfmanagement to make sure you get support on organizing your dissertation. In addition to these
workshops, you can also take advantage of our
individual coaching.
MENTORING
Mentoring is useful if you already want to gain
some insights in your favored professional field.
It helps you to get in touch with people from
academia as well as economy.
Our Workshops are taught in the language
in which they are announced. Due to our
international target group we offer most
courses in English.
for Junior Scientists“ wurden vom Berliner
Zentrum für Hochschullehre als Baustein im
hochschuldidaktischen Zertifikat anerkannt.
MANAGEMENT SKILLS KURSE (MA)

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The seminar aims at preparing you for the thesis
defense by honing your presentation skills so
you can argue your points convincingly and think
on your feet during the question and answers
session. Responding to typical questions which
may come up during the defense will also be
practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore
the workshop will provide necessary information
about the formal procedure, the requirements
and social setting of a PhD examination.
The objectives of the first day are to understand
the different kinds of scientific writing and their
differing requirements, to know what some useful
preparatory steps in writing are, to learn to develop and keep to a plan for writing an article and
to understand what is involved in collaborations
with co-authors.
The objective of the second day is to understand
how to achieve the three essential elements of
scientific writing: accuracy of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing.
Before the workshop participants will be asked to
prepare an outline or draft of a planned research
article and to write a draft Abstract of the article.
CONTENT
• Selecting a committee: what should I take
into account?
• The Do’s and Don’ts in oral PhD examinations
• How do I argue and convince people of my
academic achievements?
• How do I deal with stage fright?
• How do I structure the preparation phase
most effectively?
• How do I stay motivated in the final stretch?
18
CONTENT
• The qualities of good scientific writing
• Types of writers
• Advantages and potential problems in having
co-authors
• How to survive problems of being a nonnative English speaker
• The basic structure of research articles versus
review articles
• Making the Abstract and introduction interesting
• Choosing illustrative material (diagrams, halftones, graphs, tables)

OBJECTIVES
CONTENT
The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful
grant/fellowship applications to various funding
bodies. It consists of lecture-style sequences
with active participation by the audience dealing
with the theory of good scientific writing, the
basics of grant applications and the principles
of different funding bodies, as well as hands-on
exercises on aim definition, structuring a workplan and writing a grant summary. Additional
information and exercises on writing good
scientific texts in English will deepen the writing
experience.
• Obtaining a thorough understanding of how
successful grant applications are written
• Learning to write readable texts in English
• Understanding the reviewing process for
grant applications
• Gaining practical experience in writing and
evaluating grant applications
• Obtaining an overview over funding agencies
and funding opportunities
Participants will be asked to prepare a short
“mini-grant application” (4 pages + Scientific
CV) in preparation to the course, which will
be due approx. 5 days before the start of the
course – please take this into consideration
when planning participation in this course.
These applications will be evaluated by other
participants individually before the course
and in an evaluation session within the
course and each participant will also evaluate
3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before
course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications,
but most importantly, will provide a clear
impression of the situation and the view of
potential evaluators.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Writing a review article in early stages of the
PhD-project has several advantages. The aim
of this workshop is to provide you with the
skills needed for writing high quality reviews.
You learn to organise dispersed information, to
design knowledge maps and to plan text structures. Time-saving techniques are trained and
you are encouraged to start immediately with
your writing project.
Short lectures provide information and tips
and extended exercises train the efficiency in
scientific writing. Participants gather and share
experiences.
CONTENT
• Narrative reviews versus systematic reviews
• Structure of systematic reviews
• Structure of narrative reviews: storyline, sections, paragraphs
• Writing reviews: when to start, steps to consider, software to use
• Text quality of reviews: quality criteria and
checklists
• Publishing reviews: journals, topics, cooperations
Please bring a copy of a review article to the
workshop. Choose a review from your discipline, which is, in your opinion, high quality.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Publishing research articles in high quality journals is a demanding task. It is a task sometimes
very rewarding and sometimes very frustrating.
The objectives of this training are: (1) to understand the publication process in peer reviewed
journals, (2) to develop individual strategies for
writing and publishing research articles.
To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your
skills, your abilities for professional growth. The
first step is to know them and to name them.
The second step is to know how to describe
your competencies, your motivation and your
personality, especially when applying for a job
with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international
companies, public service etc. The third step
is to identify the latest trends and to develop a
goal-oriented application strategy.

OBJECTIVES
Praxis?
Was genau bedeutet zum
Last but not least:
Gute Wissenschaft ist gute Dokumentation,
dieser wollen wir uns zum Abschluss widmen.

Der Workshop bereitet intensiv auf den mündlichen Teil der Doktorprüfung vor und vermittelt

im Anschluss gezielt möglichst einschlägig zu

All academic writing is about more than just
your research findings. Besides the content,
every author has at least two other aspects
to deal with. First, language. Of course you
want to write in a clear, concise and elegant
manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas,
but whenever you write something down, it is a
world away from the perfectly crafted language
in the articles of the journals you read. Second,
the process. Whenever you sit down to actually
write something, you get a rising feeling of
panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out
how to continuously improve your writing skills
and how to organize your writing process. We
will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing
habits, share successful strategies with each
other and work with our own and others´ texts.

OBJECTIVES
Attending academic conferences makes many
young scientists and scholars anxious. Yet conferences play a crucial role in their future career.
It’s the goal of this workshop to help younger
conference participants to increase both confidence and personal skills and to significantly
decrease the stress factor.
PART I: PRESENTING AT
CONFERENCES CONTENT
• refining one’s own talk or presentation they
have prepared in advance,
• giving the presentation, and
• using body language influentially and with
success.
Alongside these aspects, participants develop
a solid foundation so that they can prepare
and give talks that are both professional and
authentic. The first step is to discover personal
speaking and body language behavior patterns.
Participants learn how best to form and present
their presentations. They will heighten their own
self-perception, and finally, set concrete goals in
areas that need improvement.
28
PART II: COMMUNICATING AT
CONFERENCES CONTENT
Communication in professional forums is often
decisive for future career options. This workshop helps participants to meet people with an
attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in informal situations (“socials”) as well in
academic discussion settings. Both verbal and
non-verbal strategies will be considered.
Participants will learn:
• how to identify players, roles and goals in
conference settings,
• how to “play the rules of the game”,
• how to initiate and encourage small talk,
• how to talk to decision-makers,
• how to build and maintain professional
contacts and
• how to act self-confidently in discussion settings (plenary, sessions).

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This is not a conventional writing course. Our
focus is on you, the writer, and on your selfmanagement during the writing process: How
do you motivate yourself to write? How do you
feel confident while writing? How do you make
decisions and plans you can stick to? How do
you get your writing projects done on time?
During the one-day workshop we explore these
questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
We analyze your approach to your writing
projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the
areas that need improvement. With help of scientifically proven methods you find and activate
your own motivation to write. You learn how to
harness your creativity and your “inner critic” to
your advantage. Typical problems like procrastination, writer’s block or a lack of confidence in
your results are discussed.
In a follow-up session we discuss practical
problems found during the implementation
phase. We reflect on what went well and what
additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the
course with clear goals and renewed motivation.

OBJECTIVES
Time-management is not something static: it
needs constant course correction to match your
current situation, especially during a PhD. In
this training you learn not only principles and
techniques of time-management, but also selfcoaching tools that make this constant course
correction possible. The goal: to approach your
time-management issues in a solution-oriented
manner.
We first discuss the basics of self-coaching
and start practicing right away. We discuss
working habits, task-management systems,
office organization and more. We analyze “time
thieves” like procrastination, perfectionism, and
interruptions. We approach the topic of timemanagement step by step: looking at long-term
planning, medium-term planning, and your
day-by-day working schedule.
At the end of the workshop you will have a clear
idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par
excellence that can be applied to all areas of
your life. You will have specific ideas for solving
your time-management challenges. Combining
self-coaching and a whole toolbox of timemanagement principles and techniques, you
will approach future challenges in a pragmatic,
goal-oriented way.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This workshop offers goal oriented and process
oriented support to reach your career targets
by providing a profound training for planning
and performing your convincing job application, including online communication like skype
interviewing. Introductory steps of orientation
and evaluation of the individual situation and potentials will allow for identifying and specifying individual career goals. With respect to these goals
we will address questions of information (formal
as well as informal) and organization. Most notably, focusing on techniques of self-presentation
and communication (including application documents like cover letter and curriculum vitae as
well as job interviews offline as well as online) the
workshop will offer a variety of opportunities for
hands-on-exercise in various settings (individual,
group, plenum) as well as subject-specific input,
discussion, evaluation and feedback.
In this workshop, participants will hone their
skills in giving presentations in English and
taking part in professional discussions either
following their own talks or those of others.
Why does your Asian colleague never say no
and why does this drive the others mad? Speaking „good English“ is not enough anymore. We
also have to understand and engage with challenges of working across cultures.
In this two-day workshop you will be provided
with the chance to learn how to deal with tricky
situations caused by intercultural differences.
Besides stereotypes and clichés you will learn
about the latest methods to deal with your
personal critical intercultural incidents. After
day one of this workshop you have two weeks
to test your newly acquired skills. On day two
of this workshop your findings will be put into
a manual.

OBJECTIVES
Many scientific projects and specifically PhD projects suffer from an insufficient planning, unclear
goal definitions, unclear role allocation and a bad
time management. This leads to project delays,
inefficient use of resources and often to frustration
on the side of the scientists working on the bench.
This workshop is designed to improve this
situation by supporting starting PhD students
in the acquisition of the necessary skills for an
effective management of their research project
and their personal and private time. It is based
on the classical project management and time
management tools which are adapted to the
need of exploratory scientific projects.
The course includes many interactive hands-on
exercises in which participants directly apply the
learned tools to their every-day situation. They
will thus leave the course with first results that
can directly be transferred to their work and life
situation.
CONTENT
Participants will learn skills for working independently on a scientific project by:
• defining aims and objectives smartly
• structuring their work using classical project
management tools
• organizing themselves by applying time
management methods
• dealing with stress and frustration and improving self motivation

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Do you want to have more impact when delivering a presentation? Do you want to deliver your
message with more clarity, build more connection with your audience, or do you simply want
to be able to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’
when speaking to groups?
For those people who already feel comfortable presenting, we work to strengthen your
confidence, developing your ability to be more
authentic and have more professional impact
when you speak. For those who experience
nerves when speaking to a group, we look at
new ways of transforming them. What are we
actually dealing with? How can we experience
public speaking as energizing and even enjoyable? This workshop is not about tips, tricks and
techniques. It’s about building genuine strength
as a presenter – from the inside out.
The main aim of this workshop is to develop a
critical awareness of presentation techniques in
order to make informed decisions and optimize
personal style. It is therefore essential that
participants receive not only verbal feedback
from the trainer and each other, but also see
themselves presenting on video.
This seminar focuses on supporting young
scientists and researchers. It offers them possibilities to reflect upon future university careers
or alternative career choices. Based on their
individual profiles, participants develop their
own vision for their future personal and professional lives.

Technologies to exchange data are advancing
rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox). However, data protection laws remain and personal
rights need to be respected. It is important to
be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know
how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to
tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about
national and international data protection laws
will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated
and tested by the participants. Furthermore
tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The
course concludes with a discussion round about
scientific data sharing policies: „Data hugging
versus open access“.

Since ancient times one of the most intriguing
question in both philosophy and science has
been the question as to the nature of time. The
objective of this graduate course is to familiarize the participants with the main aspects of
this question and with different schools dealing
with it.
As we live in a period of transition from traditional to digital cultural technologies, awareness
of this process becomes one of the decisive
competencies within academia. The course consisting of different lectures by different speakers
from different backgrounds aims at improving
the cultural consciousness of the participants.
1. The German scientific system
• University organization and other research
institutes
• Scientific career pathways
• Funding organizations
CONTENT
CONTENT
Since the middle of the 19th century, three genealogies of reflection on time have developed:
1) the scientific genealogy (thermodynamics
and theory of evolution), 2) phenomenological
and anthropological aspects of time and 3) the
linguistic approach to ordinary language with
respects to time. The lecture course deals with
these aspects by using sources from different
disciplines and by applying the method of close
reading.
The traditional cultural technologies, i.e. communicating and calculating both orally and in
writing, have been transformed by information
and communication technologies over the last
50 years. The different speakers contribute from
their different perspectives to a better understanding of the developing network society by
discussing e.g. the idea of artificial intelligence,
of individual intellectual property and of swarm
intelligence.

The first day of the course teaches you how to
eliminate the typical reading mistakes which
most people have internalized and maintained
since primary school: regression, reading

second day entails the efficient preparation
of the reading process and the development
of flexible reading strategies facilitating an

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Scientists today have to deal increasingly with
the search for funding. It is very time-consuming and labor intensive, from the vast amount
of information selectively filter out the right
funding option. To support their scientists and
researchers Humboldt-University has a license
for the ELFI, a database for Research Funding
including Grants for Young Scientists.
We usually think of leadership as a process of
top-down influence from supervisors to their
followers. Yet, for an effective collaboration,
followers should be actively involved in the
leadership process.
ELFI allows access to:
• Over 6,800 research funding programs
• Approximately 3,100 national and international sponsors
• Information to 253 research specifications
and 31 cross-cutting issues
• Short description of the funding opportunity
• Deadlines, and the addition of programs,
addresses of contact persons
• Original specifications, data sheets or forms
• Ongoing update

This seminar will teach you how to lead effectively from your position as a Ph.D. student.
This two-part course offer includes one day of
interactive workshop. Through a combination
of theoretical input and practical exercises you
will learn to apply a number of helpful tools that
enhance your interaction with your supervisor.
CONTENT
• What techniques can I use to improve the
cooperation with my supervisor?
• How can I improve my supervisor’s participation in planning work related goals?
• How can I voice my opinion toward my

GOOD SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE
(OPEN TO ALL DOCTORAL

Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind
that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the
way in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and
the fruits of research are disseminated, applied
and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the
quality and integrity of data, transparent basis

OBJECTIVES
PRELIMINARY WORK REQUIRED
The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful
grant applications to various funding bodies. It
consists of lecture-style sequences with active
participation by the audience dealing with the
theory of good scientific writing, the basics of
grant applications and the working principles
of different funding bodies, as well as hands-on
exercises on aim definition, structuring a workplan, writing a grant summary and evaluating
grants.
Participants will be asked to prepare a short
“mini-grant application” (3 pages + Scientific
CV) in preparation to the course, which will be
due approx. 5 days before the start of the course.
These applications will be evaluated by other
participants individually before the course and
in an evaluation session within the course and
each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals
by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This
will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation
and the view of potential evaluators and thus of
the things to do/avoid as an applicant.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Although introversion and extroversion are well
known and widely used in personality tests, there
is no training that helps academics apply these
attributes to their professional communication.
Introverted and extroverted persons, however,
have very different ways of communicating. In
academic settings, both personality types face
their own challenges: This workshop addresses
these issues for the first time in Germany and
is unique in its design. It helps young scientists
to understand both their individual advantages
and their needs as introverts or extroverts and
to cope with specific communication challenges
that come with their own personality type or with
the preferences of their communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations
and self-perception is added.
On day two
of this workshop your findings will be put into
a manual.

OBJECTIVES

Coaching
INDIVIDUAL COACHING
EINZELCOACHING
A doctoral candidate may encounter particular
challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis,
especially during the final stages. Coping with
stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it
might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within
a team.
In such situations, individual coaching could be
beneficial.
• Coaching is a method of consulting with a focus on development and addressed to those,
who seek to improve their way of approaching challenges.
• The aim is to observe the situation closely
so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to
develop a specific plan of action.
• The focus of coaching is not to discuss the
questions concerning the subject matter or to
provide informed advice but rather lies with
communication and the process of reflection.
• Fachliche Fragen bzw. Ratschläge stehen
beim Coaching nicht im Mittelpunkt, sondern
Reflexion und Kommunikation. Lösungen
werden nicht vorgezeichnet, sondern durch
den Ratsuchenden entwickelt.
The Humboldt Graduate School works with
coaches, who have gained various experiences
in the field of academia and are therefore
especially suited to help doctoral candidates.
A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to
five meetings.

ENGLISH FOR RESEARCHERS, GRADUATE AND PHD STUDENTS AT SPRACHENZENTRUM OF HUMBOLDT-UNIVERSITÄT
CONFLICT CONSULTATION
KONFLIKTSPRECHSTUNDE
The relationship between doctoral candidates
and their supervisors is usually very positive
and based on trust. However, this does not
mean that there will never be situations, in
which opinions can differ fundamentally, so
much so that it might be helpful to consult
an external party. To help solve such issues,
regular conflict consultation hours are offered
for each doctoral candidate of the HumboldtUniversität. This way, serious problems between
the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may
be resolved in advance, so that the basis for
continuing to work together constructively can
be re-established.
These consultation hours will be offered by
trained mediators and are free of charge. The
consultation hour will be held at the Humboldt
Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in Berlin- Mitte, or – if necessary – it can be held in
Adlershof as well.
The consultation hour usually takes place once
a week. Please make sure to register first via
e-mail ([email protected]) or
telephone: 030-2093-1702 or 0172-2357086 (Dr.
Regina von Schmeling). Upon registering you
will be informed about the time and room number for the consultation. Complete confidentially
is promised.
The ZE Language Centre offers specialist English courses at the advanced level, which will help you
to prepare for a successful research career. For further information on English Courses at at the ZE
