Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination. The objectives of the first day are to understand the different kinds of scientific writing and their differing requirements, to know what some useful preparatory steps in writing are, to learn to develop and keep to a plan for writing an article and to understand what is involved in collaborations with co-authors. The objective of the second day is to understand how to achieve the three essential elements of scientific writing: accuracy of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing. Before the workshop participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research article and to write a draft Abstract of the article. CONTENT • Selecting a committee: what should I take into account? • The Do’s and Don’ts in oral PhD examinations • How do I argue and convince people of my academic achievements? • How do I deal with stage fright? • How do I structure the preparation phase most effectively? • How do I stay motivated in the final stretch? 18 CONTENT • The qualities of good scientific writing • Types of writers • Advantages and potential problems in having co-authors • How to survive problems of being a nonnative English speaker • The basic structure of research articles versus review articles • Making the Abstract and introduction interesting • Choosing illustrative material (diagrams, halftones, graphs, tables) TRAINING | COACHING | MENTORING Dr. Christina Schütte 20. – 21.03.2014 Candidates in the 2nd or 3rd year of PhD studies OBJECTIVES CONTENT The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/fellowship applications to various funding bodies. It consists of lecture-style sequences with active participation by the audience dealing with the theory of good scientific writing, the basics of grant applications and the principles of different funding bodies, as well as hands-on exercises on aim definition, structuring a workplan and writing a grant summary. Additional information and exercises on writing good scientific texts in English will deepen the writing experience. • Obtaining a thorough understanding of how successful grant applications are written • Learning to write readable texts in English • Understanding the reviewing process for grant applications • Gaining practical experience in writing and evaluating grant applications • Obtaining an overview over funding agencies and funding opportunities Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” (4 pages + Scientific CV) in preparation to the course, which will be due approx. 5 days before the start of the course – please take this into consideration when planning participation in this course. These applications will be evaluated by other participants individually before the course and in an evaluation session within the course and each participant will also evaluate 3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before course start. This will provide extensive feedback for all participants on their applications, but most importantly, will provide a clear impression of the situation and the view of potential evaluators. All academic writing is about more than just your research findings. Besides the content, every author has at least two other aspects to deal with. First, language. Of course you want to write in a clear, concise and elegant manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas, but whenever you write something down, it is a world away from the perfectly crafted language in the articles of the journals you read. Second, the process. Whenever you sit down to actually write something, you get a rising feeling of panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out how to continuously improve your writing skills and how to organize your writing process. We will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing habits, share successful strategies with each other and work with our own and others´ texts. Yet conferences play a crucial role in their future career. It’s the goal of this workshop to help younger conference participants to increase both confidence and personal skills and to significantly decrease the stress factor. PART I: PRESENTING AT CONFERENCES CONTENT • refining one’s own talk or presentation they have prepared in advance, • giving the presentation, and • using body language influentially and with success. Alongside these aspects, participants develop a solid foundation so that they can prepare and give talks that are both professional and authentic. The first step is to discover personal speaking and body language behavior patterns. Participants learn how best to form and present their presentations. They will heighten their own self-perception, and finally, set concrete goals in areas that need improvement. 28 PART II: COMMUNICATING AT CONFERENCES CONTENT Communication in professional forums is often decisive for future career options. This workshop helps participants to meet people with an attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in informal situations (“socials”) as well in academic discussion settings. Both verbal and non-verbal strategies will be considered. Participants will learn: • how to identify players, roles and goals in conference settings, • how to “play the rules of the game”, • how to initiate and encourage small talk, • how to talk to decision-makers, • how to build and maintain professional contacts and • how to act self-confidently in discussion settings (plenary, sessions). OBJECTIVES This is not a conventional writing course. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your selfmanagement during the writing process: How do you motivate yourself to write? How do you feel confident while writing? How do you make decisions and plans you can stick to? How do you get your writing projects done on time? During the one-day workshop we explore these questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere. We analyze your approach to your writing projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. With help of scientifically proven methods you find and activate your own motivation to write. You learn how to harness your creativity and your “inner critic” to your advantage. Typical problems like procrastination, writer’s block or a lack of confidence in your results are discussed. In a follow-up session we discuss practical problems found during the implementation phase. We reflect on what went well and what additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the course with clear goals and renewed motivation. CONTENT CONTENT • Chancen identifizieren, die helfen sichtbarer zu werden, um so die eigenen Karriere in der Wissenschaft zu befördern. • Angemessene positive Selbstpräsentation als Wissenschaftlerin innerhalb der eigenen Scientific Community. • Analysis of your writing work-flow • Finding your own motivation • Defeating writers’ block and procrastination, coping with perfectionism • Using feedback to your advantage • Office organization INTERDISCIPLINARY | INTERDISZIPLINÄR 29 SUSTAINABLE TIME-MANAGEMENT WITH SELF-COACHING (INTERDISCIPLINARY) APPLICATION TRAINING – COMMUNICATION OFFLINE AND ONLINE (INTERDISCIPLINARY) SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATION (INTERDISCIPLINARY) INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCIES (INTERDISCIPLINARY) Trainer: Date: Target Group: Trainer: Date: Target Group: Trainer: Date: Target Group: Trainer: Date: Target Group: Dr. María Machón 17. – 18.03.2014 or 03. – 04.12.2014 Candidates in all years of PhD studies OBJECTIVES Time-management is not something static: it needs constant course correction to match your current situation, especially during a PhD. In this training you learn not only principles and techniques of time-management, but also selfcoaching tools that make this constant course correction possible. The goal: to approach your time-management issues in a solution-oriented manner. We first discuss the basics of self-coaching and start practicing right away. We discuss working habits, task-management systems, office organization and more. We analyze “time thieves” like procrastination, perfectionism, and interruptions. We approach the topic of timemanagement step by step: looking at long-term planning, medium-term planning, and your day-by-day working schedule. At the end of the workshop you will have a clear idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par excellence that can be applied to all areas of your life. You will have specific ideas for solving your time-management challenges. Combining self-coaching and a whole toolbox of timemanagement principles and techniques, you will approach future challenges in a pragmatic, goal-oriented way. 30 Dr. habil. Do you want to deliver your message with more clarity, build more connection with your audience, or do you simply want to be able to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’ when speaking to groups? For those people who already feel comfortable presenting, we work to strengthen your confidence, developing your ability to be more authentic and have more professional impact when you speak. For those who experience nerves when speaking to a group, we look at new ways of transforming them. What are we actually dealing with? How can we experience public speaking as energizing and even enjoyable? This workshop is not about tips, tricks and techniques. It’s about building genuine strength as a presenter – from the inside out. The main aim of this workshop is to develop a critical awareness of presentation techniques in order to make informed decisions and optimize personal style. It is therefore essential that participants receive not only verbal feedback from the trainer and each other, but also see themselves presenting on video. OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVES CONTENT Since ancient times one of the most intriguing question in both philosophy and science has been the question as to the nature of time. The objective of this graduate course is to familiarize the participants with the main aspects of this question and with different schools dealing with it. As we live in a period of transition from traditional to digital cultural technologies, awareness of this process becomes one of the decisive competencies within academia. The course consisting of different lectures by different speakers from different backgrounds aims at improving the cultural consciousness of the participants. 1. The German scientific system • University organization and other research institutes • Scientific career pathways • Funding organizations CONTENT CONTENT Since the middle of the 19th century, three genealogies of reflection on time have developed: 1) the scientific genealogy (thermodynamics and theory of evolution), 2) phenomenological and anthropological aspects of time and 3) the linguistic approach to ordinary language with respects to time. The lecture course deals with these aspects by using sources from different disciplines and by applying the method of close reading. The traditional cultural technologies, i.e. communicating and calculating both orally and in writing, have been transformed by information and communication technologies over the last 50 years. The different speakers contribute from their different perspectives to a better understanding of the developing network society by discussing e.g. the idea of artificial intelligence, of individual intellectual property and of swarm intelligence. Dr. Sylvia Löhken 14. – 15.05.2014 Female Candidates in all years of PhD studies/ Postdocs OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVES Although introversion and extroversion are well known and widely used in personality tests, there is no training that helps academics apply these attributes to their professional communication. Introverted and extroverted persons, however, have very different ways of communicating. In academic settings, both personality types face their own challenges: This workshop addresses these issues for the first time in Germany and is unique in its design. It helps young scientists to understand both their individual advantages and their needs as introverts or extroverts and to cope with specific communication challenges that come with their own personality type or with the preferences of their communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations and self-perception is added. Why does your Asian colleague never say no and why does this drive the others mad? Coaching INDIVIDUAL COACHING EINZELCOACHING A doctoral candidate may encounter particular challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis, especially during the final stages. Coping with stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within a team. Die Promotion kann für den Doktoranden oder die Doktorandin – besonders in der Abschlussphase – eine ganz spezielle Herausforderung sein. Stressresistenz, Frustrationstoleranz oder Zeitmanagement können ins Wanken geraten und es ist nicht auszuschließen, dass Schreibblockaden oder Konflikte im Team auftreten. In such situations, individual coaching could be beneficial. • Coaching is a method of consulting with a focus on development and addressed to those, who seek to improve their way of approaching challenges. • The aim is to observe the situation closely so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to develop a specific plan of action. • The focus of coaching is not to discuss the questions concerning the subject matter or to provide informed advice but rather lies with communication and the process of reflection. The Humboldt Graduate School works with coaches, who have gained various experiences in the field of academia and are therefore especially suited to help doctoral candidates. A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to five meetings. Die Humboldt Graduate School arbeitet mit Coaches zusammen, die insbesondere im Wissenschaftsbereich über vielfältige Erfahrung verfügen und daher besonders geeignet sind, mit Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen zusammenzuarbeiten. Geis ENGLISH FOR RESEARCHERS, GRADUATE AND PHD STUDENTS AT SPRACHENZENTRUM OF HUMBOLDT-UNIVERSITÄT CONFLICT CONSULTATION KONFLIKTSPRECHSTUNDE The relationship between doctoral candidates and their supervisors is usually very positive and based on trust. However, this does not mean that there will never be situations, in which opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so that it might be helpful to consult an external party. To help solve such issues, regular conflict consultation hours are offered for each doctoral candidate of the HumboldtUniversität. This way, serious problems between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may be resolved in advance, so that the basis for continuing to work together constructively can be re-established. These consultation hours will be offered by trained mediators and are free of charge. The consultation hour will be held at the Humboldt Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in Berlin- Mitte, or – if necessary – it can be held in Adlershof as well. Jeder kann gute wissenschaftliche Texte schreiben.“ Dr. Christina Schütte: “As a PhD student I learned to write good grants by writing part of an SFB application for my boss, which took me 3 months. I would really have preferred a two day workshop and I think the resulting knowledge is even more versatile!” John Kluempers, PhD: „Nach diesem Workshop redet der Kopf nicht nur klug – er redet auch verständlich.“ MEMBER PROGRAMS | MITGLIEDSPROGRAMME 75 Our Member Programs Unsere Mitgliedsprogramme Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics & Management Sciences 76 Gender as a Category of Knowledge (GRK 1014) Hormonal Regulation of Energy Metabolism, Body Weight and Growth (GRK 1208) International Graduate Program Medical Neurosciences Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies Mass, Spectrum, Symmetry: Particle Physics in the Era of the Large Hadron Collider (GRK 1504) Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences METRIK – Model-Based Development of Technologies for Self-Organizing Decentralized Information Systems in Disaster Management Berlin Mathematical School Multilevel Constitutionalism (GRK 1263) Berlin School of Integrative Oncology PhD-Net “Das Wissen der Literatur” Berlin School of Mind and Brain School of Analytical Sciences Adlershof Computational Systems Biology (GRK 1772) Service-oriented Architectures for the Integration of Software-based Processes, exemplified by Health Care Systems and Medical Technology SOAMED (GRK 1651) European PhD in Socio-Economic and Statistical Studies Hochdimensionale nichtstationäre Zeitreihen Fluorine as a Key Element (GRK 1582) ZIBI Graduate School for Infection Biology and Immunity TRAINING | COACHING | MENTORING MEMBER PROGRAMS | MITGLIEDSPROGRAMME 77 How to find us Wie Sie uns erreichen Contact Kontakt KEY COMPETENCIES / SCHLÜSSELKOMPETENZEN Aleksandra Skoric Tel.: +49 30 2093 1705 Fax: +49 30 2093 1718 E-Mail: [email protected] Sitz: Luisenstraße 56, Raum 208 COACHING/ MENTORING/ KONFLIKTSPRECHSTUNDE Dr. Regina von Schmeling Tel.: +49 30 2093 1702 Fax: +49 30 2093 1718 E-Mail: [email protected] Sitz: Luisenstraße 56, Raum 214 Humboldt Graduate School HUMBOLDT GRADUATE SCHOOL OFFICE Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Unter den Linden 6 D-10099 Berlin Luisenstraße 56, Raum 216 Phone: +49 30 2093 1720 Fax: +49 30 2093 1718 E-Mail: [email protected] 78 TRAINING | COACHING | MENTORING CONTACT | KONTAKT 79 http://humboldt-graduate-school.de
