‘A Charlie Brown
Christmas’
turns 50
By Jay Bobbin
On its 50th anniversary, not only is Lee Mendelson grateful for “A Charlie Brown
Christmas” as its producer, but also as a highly unexpected songwriter.
“I wrote the words to ‘Christmas Time Is Here,’” he says, “and that’s been covered
by about 100 people. And that’s overwhelming to me. If I ever thought Tony Bennett was going to sing a song I wrote … I mean, I’m a documentary filmmaker. To
this day, I’m not sure how animation works.”
Maybe not, but it’s worked well enough for the “Peanuts” specials to remain television staples for a half-century. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was the first to bring
Charles M. Schulz’s comic-strip characters to the home screen, and it has its long-traditional seasonal showing, Nov. 30, on ABC. When it opens with its familiar scene
of young skaters in a tranquil setting, Mendelson will be happy to hear his lyrics
again.
“The show was done and the song was an instrumental,” he recalls, “and I thought,
‘Maybe if I could find somebody to put some words to it … .’ But I couldn’t find
anybody, and we only had two weeks. I literally sat down at my kitchen table, took
out an envelope and wrote this little poem that was only one minute long. And that’s
why the song is hard to record, because it’s only a one-minute scene. And then, that
all happened … so who knew?”
The sound of words was important in terms of the casting of the characters, too.
“Up until that time, adults had done children’s voices,” Mendelson reflects. “They
never used real kids on cartoons, and we decided it would be more real if we did. We
found an actor (for Charlie Brown), Peter Robbins, who had kind of a ‘blah’ voice
– it’s hard to be a good actor and be ‘blah’ – and then, Linus (voiced by Chris Shea)
had this great innocence about him and Lucy (Tracy Stratford), the crabbiness.”
Several of the original voice actors appear in “It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie
Brown,” a retrospective special that precedes “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on ABC
the same night. That hour, hosted by Kristen Bell, includes musical performances by
such stars as Kristin Chenoweth … whose performance as Sally in the 1999 Broadway revival of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” earned her a Tony Award.
Mendelson’s association with Schulz came largely out of a proposal for a documentary on the cartoonist, who resisted at first, but relented after learning Mendelson had
made one on baseball legend Willie Mays that Schulz enjoyed. Ultimately, “nobody
bought it,” Mendelson notes of the Schulz profile, “but Coca-Cola (executives) had
seen it … and two years later, they called and said, ‘Let’s do a Christmas show.’ And
that’s how it all happened.”
Did you know?
The original broadcast of “A Charlie Brown
Christmas” preempted “The Munsters.”
Recognize this character? Shermy made a rare
television appearance in the special complaining that he plays a shepherd
every year. He was one of the first characters to appear in the original
comic strip in 1950 but gradually disappeared from the cast.
No laughing matter!
Charles Schulz refused to let network executives insert a laugh track into
the cartoon, something that was standard for TV comedies during that
time.

“Christmas in Rockefeller Center” (Dec. 2, NBC, 8 p.m.):
An event that’s an absolute sign of the season is captured by television cameras again, as this
annual special is capped by the flipping of the switch that illuminates the giant tree in New
York’s Rockefeller Center. “Today’s” Al Roker – who readily admits he considers himself
“Mr. Holidays,” partially because of his yearly involvement here – is on hand again, introducing celebrity guests and musical acts for most of the hour before the colorful lights go on.
The holiday season is a great time for reunions, and this seasonal new project offers one as
Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter – the former “Family Ties’’ co-stars who have done
Christmas movies together in the past – team again, this time as Santa and Mrs. Claus. Their
daughter (“Hart of Dixie” alum Laura Bell Bundy) decides to bring her latest boyfriend (Jesse
Hutch) home to meet them, “home” being the North Pole in this case. And get this: Her
former beau turns out to be Jack Frost (Tony Cavalero).
“CMA Country Christmas” (Dec. 3, ABC, 9 p.m.):
“A Christmas Melody” (Dec. 19, Hallmark Channel, 8 p.m.):
For the sixth time, the annual special featuring country-music stars and seasonal tunes is
hosted by Jennifer Nettles … who also gets in on the singing with her powerful and distinctive voice. The talent turnout generally is quite impressive, since the show – originating from
Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry – is taped within days of the annual CMA Awards, meaning that many of the genre’s top stars are around. The performance benefits the Marine Corps
Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program.
“The Great Christmas
Light Fight”
(Dec. 7, ABC, 8 p.m.):
For the third year, there’s an extra
incentive for certain neighborhoods to light up with colorful
displays celebrating the season,
since 20 families participate in
this competition to come up
with the presentation ultimately
determined to be the best. Taniya
Nayak (“Restaurant: Impossible”) and Carter Oosterhouse
(“Rowhouse Showdown”) are the
program’s new judges, surveying
the efforts of those who vie for
a cash prize in each of the three
weekly episodes.

‘Lucy’ won’t leave you
listless …
As part of the “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” on Dec. 23, CBS will air the firstever colorized version of the “Lucy Does a Commercial” episode that originally
aired in 1952. The “Vitameatavegamin” skit is a classic that’s sure to bring laughs.
The hour will also include “The Christmas Episode” from 1956, which is also
being given first-time vintage color treatment. So if you’re headed out for some
festive celebrations, be sure to set your DVR. But take it easy on the eggnog … you
don’t want to be “unpoopular” and “pop out” at your holiday party!

“Becoming Santa” (Dec. 12, Lifetime, 8 p.m.):
“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2016”
(Dec. 31, ABC, 8 p.m.):
“Last Chance for Christmas” (Dec, 6, Lifetime, 9 p.m.):
“Tournament of Roses Parade” (Jan. 1, ABC, NBC, Hallmark
Channel, HGTV, 11:30 a.m.):
Hilarie Burton has dealt with tougher stuff in her series work (“Extant,” “One Tree Hill”),
but she’s also become a regular on the holiday TV-movie circuit, as she confirms again with
this new fantasy that involves Santa’s reindeer. Prancer is the specific concern, since he hurts a
hoof right before Christmas, meaning a replacement is necessary – and the likeliest candidate
belongs to a woman (Burton) who isn’t so sure about assisting the intended mission. Gabriel
Hogan and Tim Matheson also star.
OUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY PROGRAMS
“Dolly Parton’s
Coat of Many
Colors” (Dec. 10,
NBC, 9 p.m.)
Mariah Carey has had a musical standard with “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and now,
she hopes to make this movie – which she directs as well as stars in – a seasonal staple as well.
She clearly draws on her own background by playing a music teacher who helps a student
compose a song to perform in a local variety show, thus helping the girl adjust to her new surroundings. And might Carey herself croon a tune or two in the picture? Take a wild guess.
“Just in Time for Christmas” (Dec. 5, Hallmark Channel, 8 p.m.):
A new “Hallmark Hall of Fame” drama is an annual tradition of the holiday season, and it
remains in place with this new tale that incorporates the ever-popular “It’s a Wonderful Life”
theme … and makes William Shatner the angel in question. His character advises a woman
who shows the future to a woman (Eloise Mumford) who has to decide whether to settle for
small-town life with her would-be fiance (Michael Stahl-David) or accept a college teaching
position elsewhere. Christopher Lloyd also stars.
BY JAY BOBBIN
Though she’s not actually
a star of it, country-music icon Parton is a huge
factor in this new TV
movie -- in the form
of her 9-year-old self,
portrayed by Alyvia Alyn
Lind. Fellow singing star
Jennifer Nettles and Rick
Schroder play the young,
Smokey Mountains-raised
Dolly’s parents, who were
huge influences on her
... as was the very special
coat that gives the movie
and Parton’s same-named
song their title. Gerald
McRaney also stars as her
grandfather.
Well, of course. Where else would Seacrest (soon to start the final season of “American Idol”)
and, frankly, millions of revelers and at-home viewers – be as the clock nears the stroke of
midnight as Jan. 1 approaches? As usual, the host will preside over a music-packed celebration
that starts in primetime with segments from both New York and Hollywood, then puts the
focus on Times Square as the clock ticks down to the legendary annual descent of the giant
crystal-paneled ball.
You want flowers for New Year’s Day? We’ve got your flowers right here … which should
come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who watches this event annually. “Find Your Adventure” is the theme of the 127th edition, as floats and marching bands from across the country
put on their finest displays as they literally parade through the streets of Pasadena, Calif. The
Rose Queen and her court have another date at the Rose Bowl college football game later in
the day.
“Great Performances: From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration
2016” (Jan, 1, PBS; check local listings):
“Christmas in Rockefeller Center”
“Just in Time for Christmas”
As it was with her predecessor Walter Cronkite, it’s become a given to find beloved stage and
screen star Julie Andrews at the Austrian capital’s Musikverein on the first day of a new year,
presiding over the television presentation of the Vienna Philharmonic’s traditional concert of
music composed by the Strauss family. She’s back there again as Mariss Jansons conducts the
orchestra, and as usual, Andrews also tours many of the city’s notable sites.
“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’
Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2016”
“Becoming Santa”
On the top of the world
For one week in November 1994, Tim Allen had the No. 1 movie at the box office
(“The Santa Clause,” currently airing on ABC Family), the No. 1 rated television show
(“Home Improvement”), and the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book (“Don’t Stand
Too Close to a Naked Man”).
