THE MAGAZINE FOR MEMBERS OF THE GERMAN-BRITISH CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY & COMMERCE
A clear message
The recent European Elections have sent
a clear message to the governments of
the EU member states. The electorate no
longer believes in the European project to
the same extent as in the past. Of course
a protest vote element may have played
a role but this should not be used as an
excuse not to make changes.
European leaders need to address the underlying issue that a significant
share of the population of most member states no longer sees a benefit,
be it economic or political, in belonging to the Club. I think this view is
unjustified, but it does exist, and therefore the European Union, together
with the governments of the member states, needs to do a much better
job of communicating the tremendous benefits the EU has brought to all.
In an ever more interdependent world, we should also not forget that the
EU has to be more than just a free trade area. To shy away from our joint
political responsibilities is not possible, as doing so, would have a significant
negative economic effect in the medium term. Recent events in the
Ukraine have demonstrated again that Europe urgently needs to develop
common answers to events occurring around it. Individual member states
may have different views on various matters, but this should not stop
them from developing and supporting a common position. Only in a joint
effort will the countries of Europe be strong enough to make their voice
effectively heard.
As the economic well-being is often the most important factor influencing
electoral choices, the positive news about the UK’s economy should enable
the government to take a more constructive outlook on Europe. This
change in outlook is necessary as only a positive approach will convince
the other member states to consider accommodating British demands.
The German Chancellor has been particularly willing to listen to the Prime
Minister’s views, but he has to make it clear as a matter of urgency how he
would like to change the workings of the European Union. The noisy but
vague criticism of the past few years will not be enough to modernise the
Union. Without concrete reform proposals the patience of other member
states will eventually start to wear thin and an opportunity to change the
EU for the better may be missed.

ECBM helps to develop new online language
course for the travel and tourism industry
The European College of Business and Management (ECBM)
specialises in the provision of customised business and
management programmes by working in close partnership with
employers and UK universities.
With 700 – 900 students from Germany attending Professional
Development Programmes at its London premises each year, the
key objective is to improve students’ language competence and
professional skills in a vocational context.
Now the college is looking closely at the Travel and Tourism
Industry and what drives demand for linguistic competence in this
sector. The ECBM is a partner in the SLEST 2.0 (European Linguistic
Standard for Professionals in Tourism) project within the European
Union Lifelong Learning Programme.
Higher education institutions from six European countries are
collaborating to create an online language programme for
professionals working in various sectors within the travel and
tourism industries.
The material will be designed to enable workers to learn languages
autonomously and effectively without the need for constant
tutor supervision. The course will be available in English, German,
Spanish and Italian and participants will be able to attain level A2
and B1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages
upon successful completion.
More project details can be found online on www.slest2-0.eu.

Bislang wurden diese Dienstleistungen im Mitgliedsstaat des
Unternehmers besteuert.
britische Umsatzsteuer in Rechnung stellen.
an EU-Privatkunden in anderen Mitgliedsstaaten erbringen, in

Trends and Views on Direct Investment by
German Companies in the United Kingdom
The German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce promotes trade and investment between the United Kingdom and
Germany. As part of this function, a comprehensive survey about the trends and views of German subsidiaries in the United
Kingdom is carried out on a regular basis.
The most recent survey was conducted in November/December 2013 and approximately 120 German owned companies
contributed.
The survey highlights the current trends in direct investment by German companies in the UK and investigates factors such as
turnover, employment and market focus as well as trends on future developments. In this issue we conclude publishing the
results and findings.

Reasons for investing in the UK
Serving the UK market is the main reason for German investment in the UK but the availability of certain skills in the labour market (in the service

Inflation in Germany reached its lowest level for four years in May,
with prices hardly rising in a year. Heating bills fell while food costs
edged up slightly. Prices rose by 0.9 percent on May 2013, according
to statistics office Destatis, and fell 0.1 percent on April. Although it is
good news for consumers, the weak inflation is below the European
Central Bank’s target of just under two percent.
