• Minnesota will seek to defend its 2005 Southern
Scuffle title. The Gophers finished the 32-team tournament with 192 points, while 12th-ranked Missouri
placed a distant second with 149 points. Dustin
Schlatter (149), Roger Kish (184) and Cole Konrad
will all be seeking to defend their 2005 individual
titles at the Southern Scuffle.
• After defeating top-ranked Oklahoma State and No.
7 Iowa State prior to finals week and the holiday

each of the last two weeks in the USA

• Four Minnesota wrestlers still hold perfect records
through the early part of the season. Manuel Rivera
is 15-0 at 141 pounds with two pins, two major decisions and one tech fall. Dustin Schlatter is 11-0 with
two pins and six tech falls. Roger Kish is also 11-0
with five pins and two major decisions. Cole Konrad
is 6-0 with three pins and a major decision.
• Konrad currently ranks tied for fourth all-time in
career pins with 40 and tied for ninth place all-time in
career victories with 126. With 47 consecutive wins
dating back to the start of last season, Konrad is now
just 12 away from breaking Tim Hartung’s schoolrecord streak of 58 straight victories.
• Minnesota’s victory over top-ranked Oklahoma State
on Wednesday, Dec. 6 was its eighth in the last 11
meetings over the Cowboys. Since the 1999-2000
season, the Golden Gophers have been responsible
for eight of OSU’s 14 total dual meet defeats.
• Minnesota’s shutout of Northern Colorado on Friday,
Dec. 1 was the first shutout for the Golden Gophers
since defeating Michigan State, 37-0, on January 27,
2002 in East Lansing. It was the largest margin of
victory for Minnesota since defeating Embry-Riddle,
52-6, on January 5, 2003.

MATCH-UPS WE’D LIKE TO SEE
With so many top teams and individuals competing, there are a number of marquee
match-ups that could potentially occur. Here is a look at the most intriguing potential
match-ups for the Golden Gophers:
125 - #9 Jayson Ness vs. #7 Tanner Gardner (Stanford)
This would be a rematch of the championship bout at the season-opening Bison Open,
where Gardner narrowly defeated Ness, 1-0. Ness would also like to see either of the
other two wrestlers in the tournament who are ranked above him to see where he stacks
up at this early venture in his career.
141 - #5 Manuel Rivera vs. #17 Michael Keefe (UT-Chattanooga)
While Rivera is the favorite to win the 141-pound weight class, he is still not a household
name on the national scene. A victory over Keefe would not only avenge a loss at last
year’s Northeast Duals, it would also signify the progression he has made. Rivera would
also like to avenge a 2005 loss to Brad Canterbury of Navy.
149 - #1 Dustin Schlatter vs. #3 Gregor Gillespie (Edinboro)
Schlatter would like to send a statement that he is the top 149-pounder in the nation.
While he defeated No. 2 Matt Storniolo at the NWCA All-Star Classic, the match did not
count towards their official records. This would be Schlatter’s stiffest regular season test
so far this year.
157 - Tyler Safratowich vs. #17 Josh Zupancic (Stanford)
After battling top-ranked Trent Paulson of Iowa State in the Gophers’ last dual, the road
does not get any easier for Safratowich, as he has No. 2 Brian Stith of Arizona State to
look forward to. Nothing would do more for his confidence than defeating Zupancic to
avenge his only loss at the season-opening Bison Open, which came in the semifinals.
174 - #8 Gabriel Dretsch vs. #1 Ben Askren (Missouri)
Facing the top-ranked wrestler in the nation is always exciting. Askren is the defending
national champion at 174 pounds and is the outright favorite to claim the title again this
year. Dretsch has been wrestling very well as of late, providing a couple of clutch victo ries in Minnesota’s last two dual meets.
184 - #2 Roger Kish vs. #3 Mike Pucillo (Ohio State)
While he lost to Northwestern’s Jake Herbert at the NWCA All-Star Classic, Kish is still
undefeated officially and would like to send a statement that he is still a top contender at
184 pounds. With both conference and national implications, this potential match-up could
further influence a three-way rivalry among the big three in the Big Ten.
LAST YEAR AT THE
SOUTHERN SCUFFLE
The second-ranked Golden
Gopher wrestling team claimed
first place at the 2005 Southern
Scuffle. Minnesota finished the
32-team tournament with 192
points, while 12th-ranked
Missouri placed a distant second at 149 points. Dustin
Schlatter, Roger Kish and Cole
Konrad each won individual
titles, while Mack Reiter and
C.P. Schlatter finished as runners-up. Here are the final team
results and Golden Gopher
placewinners at last year’s
Southern Scuffle.

LOOKING AHEAD
Hwt - #1 Cole Konrad vs. #8 Ed Prendergast (Navy) or #9 Spencer Nadolsky (UNC)
A top 10 wrestler would be a welcome challenge for Konrad. While he has had a couple
of close matches this year, it’s safe to say we have yet to see his best performance, which
he usually saves for the best competition.
Following the Southern Scuffle, the Golden Gophers will return home for the new
year and will get right back into dual meet action on Jan. 2 by hosting Arizona State.
The Gophers will then have nearly two weeks off before they travel to Cedar Rapids,
Iowa where they will look to defend their National Duals title from a year ago.
PERENNIAL POWERHOUSE
Minnesota’s second-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships marked the 10th
straight season the team has finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships.
No other team in the country can boast such a feat. Since 1997, the Golden Gophers
have two first-place, four second-place and two third-place finishes. In the previous
86 years of Minnesota wrestling, the team’s top finish was a third-place showing in
1941.
PRESEASON FAVORITE
The University of Minnesota wrestling team received the top ranking in all four
preseason polls, making the Golden Gophers the unanimous preseason
favorite to win the national title. The Gophers return nine starters and seven
NCAA qualifiers from a team that ended the 2005-06 regular season as the topranked team in the nation before finishing second to Oklahoma State at the
NCAA Championships.
Redshirt freshman Jayson Ness has quickly asserted himself as one of the top 125pounders in the nation. Ness was named the Big Ten Wreslter of the Week on Dec. 12
after jump-starting the Gophers in victories over Oklahoma State and Iowa State.

THEY KEEP GOING AND GOING AND...
Top-ranked Cole Konrad finished 2006 with a perfect 41-0 record and is off to a 6-0 start this season.
His 47-match winning streak currently ranks second in school history. He also ranks eighth with a 29match winning streak which was snapped in the 2005 NCAA final by Steve Mocco. Current assistant
head coach Marty Morgan is the only other wrestler to be represented twice in the top ten.
In all, Konrad has now won 76 of his last 77 matches. He is 88-3 in the past two-plus seasons
with two losses against Mocco and one against Arizona State’s Cain Velasquez.
Top-ranked sophomore Dustin Schlatter is not far behind Konrad with 41 consecutive victories of his own, which currently ranks as the third-longest streak in school history. Schlatter finished the 2005-06 season with a 42-1 overall record. His only loss of the season came to Mark
DiSalvo of Central Michigan on Nov. 26. He won his last 30 matches of the year to claim the national title at 149 pounds and is off to a 11-0 start this season. In all, Schlatter has won 53 of his 54 collegiate matches.

ASSAULT ON THE RECORD BOOKS
Cole Konrad looks to become one of the most decorated wrestlers in school history during the 200607 season. In addition to a national championship and two Big Ten titles, Konrad is on pace to
become the school’s all-time leader in wins, pins and consecutive victories.
Now a senior, Konrad currently ranks tied for ninth in school history with a 126-13-0 career mark.
Ed Giese has held the school record for the over 20 years with his 159-34-3 mark from 1982-86.
Konrad also ranks tied for fourth all-time with Chad Erikson (1998-2002) with 40 career pins,
including 16 last season, the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. Billy Pierce holds the
school record for career pins with 51 from 1992-96.

Konrad became just the third wrestler in school history to finish a season
unbeaten with a 41-0 record last season. Tim Hartung and Marty Morgan both finished 39-0 in 1999 and 1991, respectively.
With his 47 consecutive wins dating back to Nov. 12, 2005, Konrad is just 12
wins away from breaking Tim Hartung’s school record of 58 consecutive victories.
Konrad’s 47 straight wins currently rank second all-time. He also ranks seventh on
the all-time list with 29 straight wins from Dec. 12, 2004-March 19, 2005. In all,
Konrad has won 76 of his last 77 matches.
IMPROVE ON THIS
Cole Konrad was not considered a blue-chip recruit when he signed with Minnesota
prior to the 2002-03 season. A one-time state champion out of Freedom, Wis., he
has become the top heavyweight in college wrestling. His improvement can be seen
by just examining his career against Michigan’s Greg Wagner and Oklahoma
State’s Steve Mocco.
Konrad was defeated twice by Wagner as a redshirt freshman, but turned the
corner at the 2004 Big Ten Championships with a 9-2 decision. He posted 4-1 and
7-2 decisions in 2004-05. Konrad added a fourth straight win with a 1-0 decision on
Feb. 17, 2006 in Ann Arbor. The win streak was increased to five with his 6-1 overtime decision in last year’s Big Ten finals.
The most dramatic improvement came against two-time NCAA Champion
Steve Mocco. Mocco earned three wins against Konrad in 2004-05, including a 3-1
overtime decision in the NCAA finals. Konrad began the 2005-06 season with a 41 exhibition win against Mocco at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Konrad topped that
with a pin of Mocco at the National Duals, which snapped his 85-match winning
streak. Konrad clinched another Minnesota win over Oklahoma State with a 3-1
decision against Mocco on Feb. 12. He followed it up with a 4-1 overtime decision
in the finals at the national tournament to claim his first national title.
JUST WHO WERE THOSE GUYS?
Cole Konrad has posted an impressive 125-13-0 career record, including a 87-3
record the past two-plus seasons. Here is the list of wrestlers who have defeated

SENIOR SHORTAGE
Despite returning all but one starter from last year’s national runner-up team,
Konrad is the only senior in the starting lineup for Minnesota.
CLASS ACTION
The Golden Gopher junior class, which came to Minnesota as the top-ranked
recruiting class in the nation in 2003, has lived up to the top billing. Mack Reiter, C.P.
Schlatter and Roger Kish have all won Big Ten titles in the past two years and have
combined for three All-America distinctions. Gabriel Dretsch qualified for his second
national tournament last year while Maneul Rivera made his first NCAA appearance.
MANUEL LABOR
After seeing limited action in 2005, Manuel Rivera worked his way into full-time
starting position at 141 pounds last season and was the most improved wrestler on
the Minnesota roster. He posted a solid 28-15 overall record, including 5-2 in the Big
Ten, en route to his first NCAA Tournament appearance. Rivera has continued his
progression and has become one of the Gophers’ most reliable performers. He is

THE LAST TIME MINNESOTA...
CLUTCH PERFORMER
Gabe Dretsch has been
Minnesota’s most clutch performer as of late in victories
over
then-top
ranked
Oklahoma State and No. 7
Iowa State. With the dual tied
at 12 entering his bout against
No. 8 Brandon Mason of OSU,
Dretsch earned a pivotal 3-1
decision which propelled the
Gophers to a 21-15 victory
over the Cowboys. Two nights
later, he overcame a late
deficit to ISU’s Grant Turner
and scored a takedown and
back points with under five
seconds remaining to break a
9-9 tie in the dual meet. The
Gophers went on to defeat the
Cyclones 19-13. For his performance, Dretsch was named
TheMat.com Wrestler of the

ROGER THAT
Had a losing season:
1991-92 season: 8-14
Junior Roger Kish had a
breakout season in 2005-06.
He claimed his first Big Ten
title with 3-1 decision against
defending Big Ten Champion
Pete Friedl of Illinois. He followed that with a remarkable
run at the NCAA Tournament
which resulted in a runner-up
finish. He finished 2006 with a
37-5 record, including a 17-4
mark in dual meets.
Kish is off to an 11-0 start
to the 2006-07 season. After
defeating two opponents
ranked in the top seven in the
nation and recording a pin and
a major decision in his other
two matches on Nov. 25 at the
Northeast Duals, Kish was
named the Co-Big Ten
Wrestler of the Week.
The nation’s top recruit in
2003, Roger Kish faced adversity as a redshirt freshman in
2004-05. Cruising along at 184
pounds with a 23-6 record,
Kish was sidelined over a
month during the Big Ten regular season with a skin infection.
He returned in time for the Big
Ten Championships and finished in sixth place. Kish finished one win shy of AllAmerica status at nationals.

SOPHOMORE SENSATION
Top-ranked sophomore Dustin Schlatter has established himself as one of the most
dominant wrestlers in the country in just a short time in a Golden Gopher uniform.
One of the few freshman under Head Coach J Robinson not to redshirt, Schlatter
put together one of the most remarkable rookie campaigns in school history last
season with a 42-1 overall record. He became the first freshman in school history
to win an individual national title and is the favorite to win the 149-pound crown
again this year.
NO CONTEST
Sophomore Dustin Schlatter has shut out nearly half of his opponents this year,
including three straight from Nov. 25-Dec. 6 by identical 15-0 margins. Through his
first 11 matches, Schlatter has posted five shutouts, all which have resulted in tech
falls. Overall, he has six tech falls and two pins on the year.
Schlatter is Minnesota’s leading scorer in dual meets, outscoring his opponents
32-0 through the first seven matches.
BAND OF BROTHERS
Dustin Schlatter joined his brother, C.P., in Minnesota’s starting lineup in 2006. The
brothers are the first for the Golden Gophers since Jared and Brett Lawrence
helped lead Minnesota to the 2001 NCAA Championship.
With their individual Big Ten titles last season, they joined Marty and Gordy
Morgan and Larry and Dan Zilverberg as the only brothers to win Big Ten titles in
school history.
In 2004-05, Minnesota went 8-27 in dual meets at 149 and 157 pounds. Last
season, the Schlatter brothers combined to go 37-3. So far this season, Dustin is off
to a 7-0 dual meet start while C.P. went down with an injury at the Northeast Duals
that will keep him out until after the holiday break.
FRESH-NESS
After entering the season unranked by most polls, redshirt freshman Jayson Ness
has gotten off to a hot start and quickly catapulted himself into the top 10 in the
nation at 125 pounds. Ness opened the season with three straight pins on his way
to a second-place finish at the Bison Open and captured the title a week later at the
Kaufman-Brand Open. Ness continued his impressive start with two major decisions
and a defeat of ninth-ranked Luke Smith of Central Michigan on Nov. 25 at the
Northeast Duals. Most recently, Ness was honored as the Big Ten Wrestler of the
Week following Minnesota victories over then-top ranked Oklahoma State and No.
7 Iowa State prior to the holiday break.
BIG TEN RECOGNITION
Three Minnesota wrestlers have earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors
already this season. Redshirt freshman Jayson Ness was the latest to win the
honor on Nov. 12 following Minnesota victories over then-top ranked Oklahoma
State and No. 7 Iowa State. Juniors Gabriel Dretsch and Roger Kish took home
weekly laurels in back-to-back weeks on Nov. 22-29. Dretsch won the award after
defeating two ranked opponents on his way to a 4-0 record and the 174-pound title
at the Kaufman-Brand Open. Kish earned Co-Wrestler of the Week honors after
defeating two opponents ranked in the top seven in the nation and recording a pin
and a major decision in his other two matches on Nov. 25 at the Northeast Duals.

NWCA ALL-STAR CLASSIC
For the second straight year, Minnesota had multiple wrestlers participate in the
NWCA All-Star Classic, an exhibition event which attempts to pit the nation’s top two
wrestlers in each weight class against each other in a dual meet format. Top-ranked
Dustin Schlatter defeated No. 2 Matt Storniolo, 3-0, in the 149-pound match, while
Roger Kish fell to top-ranked Jake Herbert of Northwestern, 10-2, at 184. Mack
Reiter and Cole Konrad were also invited to the All-Star Classic but were unable to
