Greetings
First I have to say what a great show Grafitti Theatre did with their
“Born Yesterday” production. It was exciting, suspenseful, funny and
a very entertaining and rewarding theatrical experience. So much hard
work was put into this production by crew and cast and it certainly
paid off. The characters were amazing and the story certainly left
one to ponder about the seriousness of corruption in our government.
Thanks so much Grafitt for all your efforts in bringing us this show.
Everyone involved should be very proud of their efforts.
Now that the first hot long weekend is behind us, we can truly
say “Summer is Here!” and there is even a little sunburn to prove it.
With so much happening on our little island paradise, it was hard to
choose what to do on the May long weekend. So many fun things, so
little time to do it all. But no worries, there will be plenty more fun
ahead for locals and visitors alike... just have a look at our Calendar
of Events on Page 4 which is bursting with activities. Two sure events
not to be missed this weekend are the GEMA Fundraiser Dance on
Saturday Night and the Mary Williamson Performing Arts Scholarship
Fundraiser this Sunday, both at Mahon Hall. It is great way to get out
and support community objectives and have lots of fun doing so. And
not be missed on May 31 is the Children’s Spring Carnival.
We at the Marketplace are very happy to receive so many phone calls
and comments from locals who know this publication is a fantastic
community service and how happy they are when they sell or buy
items without having to pay an advertising fee. One reader told me
how she received a phone call from Crofton and made an “off-island”
deal. We were concerned that bringing the magazine to Crofton and
Chemainus was not worthwhile, but now we see otherwise. We
have also had success with selling unwanted items in the mag. Sean
is probably planning to take his kids out on the boat that he bought
from us right now, and Terry is probably making good use of the
utility trailer. Drew I’m sure, has figured out the best way to make his
mooring line and some little kid out there is enjoying a green ride on
tractor. There is a lot of satisfaction in being able to see unused “junk”
being used happily by new owners. We also take pride and satisfaction
in knowing that althought we are printing on paper (trees), our service
helps in recycling and keeping our landfills a little less full.

GEMA Dance Saturday Night with Great Music
PLANET MUSIC stops for a quick picture before being filmed
by Shaw cable during their brief outdoor ‘sample’ concert on Friday,
May 9 at the Acoustic Planet studios. They are busy preparing for
the GEMA (Giving Everyone Music and Art) family dance being
held at Mahon Hall on May 24th at 7pm. Planet Music is one of
three bands donating their time and energy to help beef up the funds
in the children’s music fund account which was designed to support
families in financial hardship. GEMA covers lessons and instrument
rental for any interested budding musicians wanting to learn to play.

Paul Mowbray of ‘Mowbray and Mills’ (along with Tracy Mills)
as well as Fallon Lindsay of ‘Left Coast Fiddle’ will both be warming

Sunday May 25 will mark
the 9th annual variety
show with proceeds going
to the M.C.Williamson
Scholarship Fund. This
fund has been administered
by friends of the late Mary
and Harry Williamson.
Mary Williamson will be
remembered by many as
a principled woman with
cutting wit, and a master
of dramatic delivery. She
was an original member
of the Hysterical Society,
and a frequent contributor
to the “Letters to the
Editor” with strongly held Mary Williamson
opinions.
The scholarships are to assist Gulf Islands highschool
graduates who are choosing to seek further training and
education in the performing arts.
This gala event showcases performances from the scholarship
applicants, and a silent auction offering select island treasures.
The evening also features our own Peter Prince, well-known
singer, songwriter, and film-maker; comedians Shilo Zylbergold
and Reid Collins; musician Terry Warbey; the musical voice
of Barb Slater; clown styling with Sue and Patrick; theatrical
accents by students of Stagecoach Theatre School... with a
rousing introduction by the pipes and drums with Jan and
Jim.
MC for the event is our well-loved buffoon, Arvid Chalmers,
with his sidekick Dustin.
Delicious goodies will be available during the intermission,
provided by Maggie Warbey and friends.
The first of these scholarships was awarded in 2000 to Caitlin
Brownrigg, and last year’s scholarship went to Dejan Loyola.
Tickets for this event are $12 for general admission, and $7
for students and seniors, with advance sales at Acoustic Planet,
or at the door at Mahon Hall. Performances begin at 8 pm, but
the silent auction will be available for viewing at 7 pm.
