Having crossed one of the most beautiful bays
in the world, cruise goers arriving in Santander
pass through the Passenger Terminal located
in the very heart of a city which has much to
be discovered. The select shopping district
around the Town Hall is close at hand, whilst a
stroll along the bay will bring us to the Maritime
Museum or simply discover one of the many
beaches and golf courses which the city has to
offer. The Palacio de Festivales and numerous
galleries await the visitor as does a prestigious
and varied cuisine.

Im Naturpark von Cabárceno, 15 km von Santander entfernt, wurde ursprünglich
Eisen im Tagbau abgebaut. Heute dienen sämtliche Straßen, Tunnels und Wege
den Besuchern, die den Park zu Fuß oder mit einem Fahrzeug durchqueren können.
Es handelt sich um ein außergewöhnliches Paradies für die Fauna, wo auf einer
Fläche von über 750 ha mehr als 1.000 Tiere sämtlicher zoologischer Gattungen
der Erde - nahezu wie in freier Wildbahn - zu sehen sind: Bären, Tiger, Hirsche,
Wölfe, Löwen, Nilpferde, Nashörner, Känguruhs, Giraffen, etc.
Only 15 km from Santander and
located on the site of a former opencast iron ore working, the
Cabárceno Nature Park has a
network of paths, tunnels and roads
which may be visited on foot or by
car. The park is now a spectacular
wildlife paradise covering more
than 750 hectares and is home to
more than 1,000 animals spanning
the entire animal kingdom: bears,
tigers, deer, wolves, lions, hippos,
rhinos, kangaroos, giraffes, etc.

Liérganes with its 17th and 18th
century architecture has been
declared a site of historical and
artistic interest. The village has
managed to preserve its typical
architecture featuring flowerladen balconies, narrow streets
and an ancient stone bridge. We
can also take time to see the
nearby Elsedo Palace just 3km
away. Even without its unique
collection of modern art the 17th
century palace set in a
magnificent park would itself
merit a visit.

und 18. Jhdt. wurde zum historisch-artistischen
Ensemble ernannt und ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, dass
man es hier verstanden hat, das typische Ambiente
mit den blumengeschmückten Balkonen, engen Gassen
und der alten Steinbrücke zu erhalten.
Nur 3 km weiter hat man die Möglichkeit, den ElsedoPalast zu besichtigen. Dieser beherbergt eine für
Kantabrien einzigartige Pinakothek für moderne Kunst,
aber auch der Palast aus dem 17. Jhdt. und der ihn
umgebende Park sind einen Besuch wert.
Dating from the mid 12th century the abbey
church is the most outstanding example of
Romanesque architecture in Cantabria. This
medieval town comprises a series of historical
monuments built between the 14th and 18th
centuries, which may be seen on a leisurely
stroll through its narrow cobbled streets. A
unique combination of mansions and streets
built in the local montañes style alongside
modernist structures such as the Sobrellano
Palace, Gaudí´s «Capricho» and the neo-gothic
Universidad Pontificia.

Die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts
erbaute Stiftskirche von Santillana
ist das hervorragendste und
bedeutendste Beispiel für
romanischen Baustil in Kantabrien.
Die mittelalterliche Stadt besteht zur
Gänze aus außergewöhnlichen
historischen Bauwerken, die
zwischen dem XIV. und dem XVIII.
Jhdt. errichtet wurden. All das kann
man während eines beschaulichen
Rundgangs durch die engen, mit
Steinen gepflasterten Gässchen,
sehen.
Comillas hingegen ist eine Mischung
aus verschiedenen Baustilen. Da
gibt es einzigartige Jugendstilbauten
wie den Sobrellano-Palast oder das
Capricho von Gaudí, kantabrische
Herrschaftshäuser und Straßenzüge
(Montanés-Stil) oder das
neugotische Universitätsgebäude
der «Universidad Pontífica» mit
maurischem Charakter.

Kantabrien gilt auf der ganzen Welt als Refernz für Paläolitische
Kunst. Man hat bisher ungefähr 50 Höhlen mit Malereien gefunden,
somit besitzt Kantabrien weltweit die größte Dichte an
Höhlenmalereien.
Altamira ist die bedeutendste paläolitische Fundstätte. Um die
Malerein zu schützen, hat man unweit der Höhle das Nationalmuseum
von Altamira (Museo Nacional de Altamira) errichtet, in dem sich
eine originalgetreue Nachbildung der Höhle befindet.

Cantabria is renowned for its
palaeolithic art and with some fifty sites
with cave paintings it is one of the largest
collections in the world. Altamira is the
most important Palaeolithic site
discovered to date and for conservation
reasons it can no longer be visited.
However, the National Museum of
Altamira has been built alongside the
original site and houses an exact replica
of the cave and its paintings.

Amongst the 5,000 caves in Cantabria,
El Soplao is considered one of the great
treasures of the geological world and is
itself located in a beautiful natural
setting. Its great aesthetic value lies in
the range of eccentric formations to be
seen with a multitude of multicoloured
stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones.
Due for completion in 2006, an
ambitious project is currently underway
to convert the cave into a theme park
incorporating a Mining Museum and
using the old mine wagons to transport
visitors through the caves.
Unter den ca. 5.000 Höhlen Kantabriens wird die Höhle El Soplao als der weltweit größte geologische
Schatz gehandelt. Sie liegt eingebettet in einer wunderschönen Umgebung und besitzt auf Grund ihrer
Stalagtiten, Stalagmiten und farbigen Formationen einen großen ästhetischen Wert. Ein ehrgeiziges Projekt
soll aus der Höhle einen Themenpark machen und im Jahre 2006 mit der Eröffnung des Bergbaumuseums
(Museo de la Minería) abgeschlossen sein. Dabei ist vorgesehen, Förderwagen nach altem Vorbild als
Transportmittel für die Höhlenbesucher einzusetzen.
Wenn man im Cabuérniga-Tal, vorbei an unvergleichlichen Plätzen,
nach Bárcena Mayor kommt, glaubt man sich um einige Jahrhunderte
zurückversetzt.
Die gleichmäßigen Straßenzüge, die malerischen Häuser und die
schöne Umgebung machen die Ortschaft zu einem der schönsten
Winkel Kantabriens. In Bárcena Mayor ist das typische Flair seiner
Entstehungszeit noch erhalten geblieben.
Eingebettet zwischen den Bergen und dem Durchgangsgebiet vom
Tal zur Hochebene sind noch Reste einer sogenannten “Römerstraße”
vorhanden (Calzada Romana), obwohl die ältesten Aufzeichnungen
darüber erst aus dem Mittelalter stammen.

Arriving in Bárcena Mayor after passing
through the outstanding landscapes of
the Cabuerniga Valley, a visitor may be
forgiven for thinking that he has
journeyed back in time. The well laid
out streets, picturesque houses and

Cantabria. Bárcena Mayor still holds fast
to its origins, preserving a feeling of
times long gone. Remains of the old
Roman road can be found here in this

Eastern Cantabria is home to many
fishing villages and is now a very
attractive tourist destination offering
spectacular beaches and a long culinary
tradition based on fish and seafood.
Castro Urdiales is one of the four main
coastal towns. It is an elegant seaside
resort whose most distinctive feature is
the area around the Church of Santa
María (dating from the 15th century and
held to be the best example of Gothic
architecture in the region), the adjoining
Castle-Lighthouse and the Santa Ana
Bridge.
The Guggenheim
Museum, one of the most
spectacular urban
projects of recent years, is
only an hour from
Santander. Designed by
architect Frank Gehry this
fantastic titanium
structure in the shape of
a boat, houses an ultramodern collection and is
a must for lovers of art and
architecture.

Castro Urdiales ist eine elegante Küstenstadt, zu deren
repräsentativsten Sehenswürdigkeiten die Santa-María-Kirche
(das schönste gotische Bauwerk Kantabriens, errichtet
zwischen dem 13. und dem 15. Jhdt.), die daneben liegende
Festung mit dem Leuchtturm und die Santa-Ana-Brücke
gehören.
Eines der spektakulärsten städtebaulichen Vorhaben der
letzten Jahre ist nur eine Autostunde von Santander entfernt
zu finden: Das Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Das
fantasievolle Bauwerk in Form eines Schiffes
stammt vom Architekten Frank Gehry und
besitzt eine Struktur aus Titan. Es beherbergt
ultramoderne Kunstwerke und ist somit
sowohl für Kunst- als auch für
Architekturliebhaber sehenswert.
