elcome to the seventy-second editon of DAAD scholarships for the PhD programme
our online newsletter bringing you the “Mathematics in Industry and Commerce“ (MIC)
highlights from the Kaiserslautern Graduate School „Mathematics as a Key Technology“. The selection of the DAAD scholarship holders for the PhD programme MIC took place in

Master Programme in Actuarial and Financial
PhD studies at our department:
Mathematics
Starting with the winter semester 2016/17, the
Department of Mathematics offers a new Master
programme: Actuarial and Financial Mathematics. The duration of the programme is two years
and the language of instruction is English. The
graduates are awarded with the Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree. According to German rules
and tradition, the education is free of charge.
Applicants have to hold a qualified B.Sc. degree
in Mathematics or Economathematics (equivalent to the correspondent study programmes
in Kaiserslautern). Very good knowledge oft he
English language should be granted, too. The
admission is competitive. Only strong candidates
will be accepted.
The study programme focuses in mathematics
on financial mathematics, actuarial sciences,
statistics, and computational methods. Lectures
in the mentioned fields are accompanied by
seminars, reading courses and project seminars.
In addition, the participants take modules like
Insurance Economics, Economics of Banking,
Dynamics of Financial Markets.
The participants learn about the chances and
the limits of mathematical models in finance
and actuarial science, develop new models and
implement them. The education is on a high
theoretical level and research oriented. So excellent graduates might continue with Ph.D. studies. The job chances are extremely good: banks,
insurances, consultancies, research institutes,
or public control units are always looking for
mathematicians with background in actuarial
and financial mathematics.

Dynamische Fahrgast-Information (DFI)
Nacht, die Wissen schafft
In Kaiserslautern werden Fahrgäste künftig
genau wissen, ob der Bus fahrplanmäßig
fährt oder ob er Verspätung hat, wann er
exakt abfährt und ob die Anschlussverbindungen erreicht werden. Auskunft zu all
diesen Fragen gibt die neue dynamische
Fahrgast-Information (DFI). Weil die wirklichen Abfahrtszeiten angezeigt werden,
spricht man auch von Echtzeitinformationen. Reiseinformationen in Echtzeit
sind ein wichtiges Qualitätsmerkmal eines
modernen öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs.
Die Fahrgäste erhalten diese Informationen
auf verschiedenen Wegen. Doppelseitige
DFI-Monitore an den Haltestellen zeigen
die tatsächlichen Abfahrtszeiten aller
Busse an dieser Haltestelle an. SWK hat 16
hochfrequentierte Haltestellen mit solchen
Monitoren ausgestattet. Sie befinden sich
im Stadtzentrum, am Hauptbahnhof, am
Westbahnhof, am Pfaffplatz, am Klinikum,
am Lothringer Eck, an der Technischen
Universität und einigen anderen Haltestellen.
Sehbeeinträchtigte Personen können sich
die Informationen mittels Knopfdruck
ansagen lassen.
Auch an den weniger frequentierten Haltestellen, die nicht mit DFI-Monitoren ausgestattet sind, profitieren die Fahrgäste von
dem Echtzeitdatensystem. Per Internet
und über eine kostenlose Handy-App stehen Smartphone-Nutzern die Daten jederzeit zur Verfügung. Eine unternehmensübergreifende Vernetzung der Daten erfolgt
über die Datendrehscheibe des Landes
Rheinland-Pfalz beim Verkehrsverbund
Rhein-Neckar (VRN). Damit wird es möglich, verkehrsmittelübergreifend die komplette Reiseroute in Echtzeit einzusehen.
Der Anschlusssicherung im Stadtbusliniensystem kommt bei der Umsetzung des
Projektes eine besondere Bedeutung zu.
Auf der Grundlage der festgelegten Fahrpläne aktualisiert SWK bei einer festgestellten Abweichung fortlaufend die
Fahrgastinformationen. Dazu bedarf es

die Wissen schafft“ bereits zum sechsten Mal
als Schaufenster der Institute, namhafter

einem Streifzug durch die Kaiserslauterer
Forschungslandschaft werden spielerisch
Wissenschaft und Technologie vermittelt.
Die Veranstaltung wird zusammen mit
der Science Alliance, (Hochschulen und
Institutionen) sowie dem Projektbüro
städtische Veranstaltungen der Stadt organisiert. Mit einem bunten Musikprogramm und
kulinarischen wie kulturellen Genüssen wird
die Nacht zum Tage gemacht.
Da sich der Forschungs- und Wissenschaftsstandort Kaiserslautern in der internationalen
Spitzenklasse etabliert hat, stellt diese
Veranstaltung ein besonderes Highlight für
alle Wissenschaftsbegeisterte dar. Durch
die hervorragenden Hochschulen und
Forschungseinrichtungen hat sich die Stadt in
den letzten Jahren zu einem leistungsstarken
internationalen Zentrum für innovative
Technologieprodukte und Dienstleistungen
entwickelt.
An diesem Abend gewähren die TU, die
Hochschule sowie die Forschungsinstitute
DFKI (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für
Künstliche Intelligenz), IESE (Institut für
Experimentelles Software Engineering),
IFOS (Institut für Oberflächen- und Schichtanalytik), ITWM (Institut für Techno- und
Wirtschaftsmathematik) und IVW (Institut
für Verbundwerkstoffe) einen einmaligen
Blick hinter die Kulissen ihrer Arbeit. Auch
das BIC (Business and Innovation Centre),
die Energieagentur, das Max-Planck-Institut, sowie John Deere unterstützen den
diesjährigen Event tatkräftig.

positionen. Ein Bordrechner im Bus sendet spätestens alle 30 Sekunden diese
Daten an einen Server. Eine spezielle
Software gleicht die Daten ab und stellt
Abweichungen vom Fahrplan fest. In der
Leitstelle kann der Verkehrsmeister auf
dem Bildschirm mittels des hinterlegten
Stadtplans die Bewegung der Busse genau verfolgen. Erscheint das Fahrzeug
grün, bewegt es sich innerhalb der vom
Fahrplan vorgegebenen Zeiten. Ist es
rot gekennzeichnet, ist der Bus verfrüht.
Blau zeigt eine Verspätung an. So hat der
Verkehrsmeister immer einen genauen
Überblick über die Lage und kann die notwendigen Maßnahmen einleiten. Ist ein
Bus zu schnell, kann er den Fahrer bitten, langsamer zu fahren. Bei einer Verspätung informiert er die Anschlussbusse
an der Umsteigehaltestelle und bittet sie
die Umsteiger abzuwarten. Vor der Einführung des dynamischen Fahrgast-Informationssystems hat der Verkehrsmeister die
Fahrer über Funk informiert. Jetzt erhält
der Fahrer die Meldungen auf dem Display seines Bordrechners. Momentan sind die
DFI-Monitore noch im Testbetrieb.

Surprising election in Rhineland-Palatinate
On 13 March 2016 voters in RhinelandPalatinate went to the poll to elect the
members of the Landtag (federal parliament).
This year it was as close as never before between SPD and CDU.
For the incumbent SPD and the minister4
president Malu Dreyer it was a great
evening with 36.2% of the votes.
At the end of the election day, it was a
very disappointing evening for the Greens,
as they lost about 10% of their votes in
comparison to the election in 2011. With
5.3% they are still represented in the Landtag,
but this is not enough to form a coalition
with SPD for the coming legislative period
of 5 years.
In order to have the majority in the Landtag,
the SPD will either have to form a coalition with the Greens and the FDP, or the
SPD has to form a grand coalition with
CDU.
The CDU and their candidate Julia Klöckner
had a solid campaign and for many months
it seemed as if Mrs. Klöckner would be the
next minister-president, but on election day
the CDU has been disappointed. Their share
of votes of 31.8% is not enough to take
the lead in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The third strongest party is the ‘Alternative
für Deutschland’ (AfD), which took part in
a state election for the first time and won
12.6% of the votes.
After 5 years the FDP, with 6.2% of the votes,
will be represented in the Landtag again
and might be partner in a coalition with SPD
and Greens.
Due to the 5% threshold, for the first time in
the history of Rhineland-Palatinate, 5 political parties (SPD, CDU, FDP, Greens and AfD)
will enter the parliament. The SPD has 39,
CDU 35, AfD 14, FDP 7, Greens 6 seats.
The voter turnout increased again in comparison to 2011 and was by 70.4%.

Study Abroad
Experience report of
Annika Hasselhorn,
(Erasmus+ Program)
at the
Vilniaus Gedemino technikos universitetas
(VGTU), Lithuania - Winter Term 2014/15
a class taught in Lithuanian language but the
teacher translated the summaries and the
exam into English for me. I took two classes
for informatics students and learnt the basics
of C and C++. I also took Chemistry and Physics
classes. Especially physics was a great class
because I hadn´t had physics in High school,
so my general knowledge was poor. As I am
becoming a math and biology teacher, basic
understanding will be necessary.
I also took Lithuanian language classes. Lithuanian is a Baltic language close to Latvian and
it has seven cases.
Lithuania has a rich mythology. It is interesting
to hear the stories of the old pagan goddess.
For example the story of Jūratė, who lived in
an underwater castle made out of amber and
ruled above the sea life. She fell in love with
a mortal fishermen Kastytis and they lived together in the castle until Perkūnas, the god of
thunder, found out about it. He killed Kastytis,
shattered the amber castle and chained Jūratė
to the ruins. The amber found at Lithuanian
beaches is said to be pieces of this castle and
if you find an amber piece in shape of the a
tear drop it is one of all the tears Jūratė cried
above the dead of Kastytis.
Several things surprised me. For example
Vilnius has central heating systems. There is
a Minister who decided when and with what
amount of heat the heating is on. In Winter,
when it hasn´t snowed for a few days, it is
possible to see where the tubes are going
through the ground as the snow above them
is melted.
I am thankful to both universities for the
chance to stay one year in Lithuania.
If I were supposed to describe Lithuania in two
words, my answer would be „fire and forest“.
Forest as most part of the country is forest
and even my path to university was through a
little forest. Fire because Lithuanians seem to
love it. I haven´t seen as many fireworks before
than during my stay in Lithuania. I have seen,
for example, a fire show on the river Neris,
fires in the main street and the burning of the
Morė for the upcoming spring.
Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic
states. I had the opportunity to spend my Erasmus year in the capital Vilnius at the Vilniaus
Gedemino technios universitetas. It is one of
more than five universities in the city.
The classes at VGTU are quite small and everything from lecture to practice units is done
by the professors, therefore they often know
their students by name. Most of the university
professors did their studies in Russian language due to the Soviet occupation. Therefore
English is often their second foreign language and just a few are teaching in English
language.
The mathematic courses offered in English
are for engineers or informatic students,
hence quite different from the math studies
I was used to in Kaiserslautern. Nevertheless,
I learnt a lot about practical applications of
mathematics.
Extraordinary was the style of one of my
maths teachers who was teaching several of
my classes. The lectures were task based and
nearly everything was developped by the stu(Neris river, castle)

Digital
Das Wort digital begegnet uns oft. Wir leben
im ‘Digitalzeitalter’. Dabei ist das Wort
‘digital’ ganz schön alt. In der Sprache der
Römer bedeutet es soviel wie “Zahl” und leitet
sich vom lateinischen Wort “digitus” ab, was
übersetzt “Finger” heisst. Die Römer haben
sich etwas dabei gedacht: Man kann mit den
Fingern zählen und rechnen. In der Technik bedeutet digital, dass etwas mit einer begrenzten
Zahl von Ziffern dargestellt ist. Ein Computer
wandelt unter anderem alle eingegebenen
Buchstaben in Zahlen um. Die können abgespeichert, aufgerufen und verändert werden.

Wichtiger Heimsieg
Der 1. FC Kaiserslautern hat seine Negativserie
vorerst gestoppt. Nach fünf Niederlagen nacheinander gelang der Mannschaft gegen den SV
Sandhausen ein 2:0-Sieg. In der Tabelle steht
der FCK auf Platz 11.
