Bulls Open Season at UTEP
Buffalo will begin the 2009 season and
defense of its 2008 Mid-American Conference championship on Saturday night
when it plays at UTEP.
The Bulls return 14 starters to a team that
went 8-6, won the MAC Championship and
played in its first bowl game (International
Bowl) a season ago.
Six starters return to an offense that
recorded a school-record 5,154 yards of
offense, 424 points and 55 touchdowns in
2008.
The Bulls return eight starters to a
defense that forced 32 turnovers last season.
Game to be Televised
Saturday’s game will be televised live on
CBS College Sports with Dave Ryan and
Akbar Gbaja-Biamila calling the action.
Ready to Make Their Mark
Buffalo will have
a pair of significant
roles to fill on the
offensive side of the
ball in 2009 with the
graduation of fouryear starting quarterback Drew Willy
and the season-ending injury to all-time
leading rusher James
Starks.
Zach Maynard
Sophomore Zach
Maynard is slated to start at quarterback
for the Bulls. Last season a true freshman,
Maynard appeared in eight games. He attempted three passes and completed one
for seven yards. He was primarily used for
running plays and rushed for 56 yards on
eight carries. He had a season-long 41-yard
run against Miami (OH).
The Bulls have a lot more experience at
the running back position. Junior Brandon
Thermilus ranked second on the team in
rushing a season ago with 100 carries for
454 yards. He added seven touchdowns. He
rushed for a career-high 102 yards and two
touchdowns against UTEP last year. Senior
www.buffalobulls.com
Mario Henry has rushed for 475 yards and
a touchdown on 105 carries in two years
as a running back. Ike Nduka is the third
running back figured to be a factor. He has
yet to register a carry.
Bulls Preseason Favorites

East Division in the 2009 MAC Football
Preseason Poll. The poll was announced
at the league’s annual Football Media

media contingent.
It marks the first time since joining the
conference in 1999 that the Bulls have been
selected as preseason favorites. Buffalo
also received two votes from the media to
repeat as winners of the Marathon MAC
Championship Game.
The Bulls received 155 points, followed
by Temple (144), Akron (128), Ohio (116),
Bowling Green (101), Kent State (51) and
Miami (33). Central Michigan was picked
to win the West Division and was the overwhelming choice to win the MAC Championship.

only experienced
receiver returning
to the lineup. Senior
Brett Hamlin is set
to make his debut as
a regular in the starting lineup in 2009.
Hamlin has 121
career receptions for

Trio of Walk-ons Earn Scholarships
Three players who originally joined the
Buffalo football program as walk-ons were
awarded scholarships prior to the 2009
campaign.
Robert Colpoys, Josh Violanti and John
Syty were all awared scholarships.
Colpoys, a senior, is slated to start at right
guard. He walked on the team last fall after
transferring to UB from Urbana, an NAIA
school in Ohio. Violanti is battling for the
starting center job and Syty is a reserve
linebacker. Both players are sophomores
and earned letters last year.
New Coordinators for Bulls
Buffalo will have new coaches calling
both offensive and defensive plays this

Turner Gill has handed over offensive
play calling duties to quarterbacks coach
Danny Barrett. Entering his third season,
Barrett was promoted to offensive coordinator in the offseason after spending
his first two seasons as UB’s assistant head
coach.
Fred Reed has been promoted to defensive coordinator after spending his first
season as defensive backs coach. Reed will
also work with the safeties.
The Pleasure Principe
Junior A.J. Principe begins his third season as the Bulls’ kicker. Principe originally
came to UB as a walk-on and by the end of
his first camp had not only earned a scholarship, but also the starting job.

UB record book. He already holds the
school record for points scored by a kicker
(161) and career extra points (80). He has
27 career field goals, third in school history
and only eight shy of the school record.
Record Book Chase
The following players are among the
Bulls all-time career leaders. Here is a look
at what they need to climb further.
√ S e n i o r w i d e re ce i ve r Naaman
Roosevelt needs one receiving touchdown
to hold the career record by himself.
√ Mike Newton needs three solo tackles
to move into eight place in career solo
tackles and one interception to move into
seventh place in career interceptions.
√ UB kicker A.J. Principe is one field
goals shy of moving into second place in
career field goals made.
√ Brett Hamlin needs four catches to
move into fourth place in career receptions.
New Faces on Offensive Line
Buffalo will replace three starters from
last season’s offensive line. Gone are starting All-MAC guard Jeff Niedermier as well
as starting tackle Ray Norell and starting
center Chris Lauzze.
The Bulls do return a pair of starters in
left guard Peter Bittner and a right tackle
Andrew West. Bittner has 26 career starts
and West has 16. Both players started all
14 games of last year’s championship season.
The new starters on the o-line are slated
to be redshirt-freshman Matt Ostrowski
at left tackle, senior Matt Bacoulis at
center and senior Robert Colpoys at right
guard.
Bulls vs. Conference USA
This will be the Bulls’ second meeting
with a Conference USA opponent as they
also played UTEP a season ago. The Bulls
have played both UCF (1-5) and Marshall
(1-8). However, it was prior to when each
team joined the conference.
Under the Lights
Buffalo will play five night games this
season beginning with UTEP on Saturday
night. In addition, The Bulls will play four
games on a day other than Saturday.
Buffalo’s game at Western Michigan on
October 24 will be its last Saturday game
of the season.
The Bulls will close the season against
Bowling Green (Tue./Nov. 3), Ohio (Tue./
www.buffalobulls.com
Nov. 10), Miami (OH) (Wed./Nov. 18) and
Kent State (Fri./Nov. 27).

Several Bulls have interesting family
ties.
Junior running back Brandon Thermilus is the son of NFL running back Alonzo
Highsmith.
Junior tight end Kyle Brey is the son
Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike
Brey.
Sophomore offensive lineman Brian

who had previously been the voice of UB
football from 1992-99, returns for his second season calling Bulls’ football.
Lou Piccone, former Buffalo Bills wide
receiver and do-it-all special teams man,
will join the University at Buffalo football
broadcast team in 2009. Piccone, a staple
of Western New York since playing with the
Bills from 1977-82, will replace Steve Christie who, due to family commitments, was
unable to return to the booth this year.
Brad Riter will continue to anchor the
pre- and post-game show, while Brendan
McDaniels returns as sideline reporter.
In addition, for the seventh season, Bulls’

2009 Key Numbers
The University at Buffalo football team started the 2008 season with a bang in a textbook 42-17 victory over the University of Texas-El Paso before a paid crowd of 16,656 at UB Stadium.
Senior quarterback Drew Willy led the Bulls’ offense with a career-high four touchdowns through the air, while tailbacks
James Starks and Brandon Thermilus each went over 100 yards rushing. The defense, meanwhile, held a Miners’ offense
that averaged nearly 34 points per game last year, to 266 yards of total offense and 17 points.
The Bulls got off to a fast start to the 2008 season, scoring on their first possession after a huge special teams play. After
stopping UTEP in three plays, senior Alex Pierre tackled the punter Kyle Peterson for a 13-yard loss at the UTEP 20-yard
line.
After a sack pushed the Bulls back to the 15-yard line, Willy connected with senior tight end Bryan Kisabeth for the
Bulls’ first score of the season. Buffalo led 7-0, after a PAT by sophomore kicker A.J. Principe), with 11:15 left in the first
quarter.
The Bulls kept the momentum on UTEP’s next possession, as sophomore linebacker Justin Winters intercepted a Trevor
Vittatoe pass, after a deflection by cornerback Josh Thomas. The Bulls, however, could not take advantage and the teams
traded punts before the Bulls scored another touchdown.
The Bulls capped an 80-yard drive when Willy hit Roosevelt on a screen pass that the junior turned into a 68-yard
touchdown, the longest of his career. The Bulls led 14-0 with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter.
However, the Miners would not go away quietly, as they clawed back into the game with a pair of second-quarter
touchdowns to tie the game at 14-14.
The Bulls, however, mounted a tremendous drive late in the first quarter, marching 89 yards in 10 plays. Willy connected
on a 23-yard pass to Roosevelt and finished the drive with a gorgeous 34-yard pass down the left sideline to senior Gary
Rice. The Bulls entered the half with a 21-14 lead.
Buffalo picked up right where it left off to start the third quarter to push the lead back to a pair of touchdowns. Willy
went back to Roosevelt again, this time for a 56-yard bomb that Roosevelt caught in stride for the score. The Bulls led
28-14 with 13:18 left in the third quarter.
After UTEP kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 28-17 before the defense rose up and made a huge play early in the
fourth quarter. Holding on to an 11-point lead and UTEP driving, redshirt freshman linebacker John Syty intercepted Vittatoe in the end zone after the ball was tipped by sophomore Sherrod Lott.
The Bulls then put the game away in the fourth quarter by completely dominating the line of scrimmage. Buffalo drove
80 yards in nine plays to score again, with Thermilus blasting the final two yards.
After stopping UTEP on downs, Buffalo drove 9 plays and 55 yards with Thermilus ripping off a 13-yard run for the
clinching score with 4:48 remaining. It was Thermilus’ first two-touchdown game in his career.
Thermilus finished the game with 102 yards on 16 carries, while Starks had 179 yards on 31 carries. For the game, the
Bulls averaged 5.3 yards per game. Syty added his second interception of the game on UTEP’s next drive.
Defensively, Winters finished with a team-high 10 tackles, two for loss, a sack and an interception. Sophomore strong
safety Davonte Shannon added eight tackles, while sophomore linebacker Tom Drewes added six tackles, a sack, 1.5
tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Roosevelt added four receptions for a career-high 154 yards (38.5 yards per catch).

Buffalo Bulls Weekly Football Release
HEAD COACH TURNER GILL
fourth Season at Buffalo • 15-23 Record at UB
Entering his fourth season, head coach Turner Gill
has lifted the Buffalo football program from a one-win
program to Mid-American Conference Champions. On
December 5, 2008 the Bulls defeated 12th-ranked and
undefeated Ball State to win the MAC Championship
for the first time in school history.
Under Gill’s leadership, the Bulls had an 8-6
record in 2008. The eight wins were the most in the
Bulls’ Division I-A era and one shy of the school record
for wins in a season. Gills’ UB teams have now won 13
games over the past two seasons – one more than the
first eight seasons as a Division I-A program.
Gill led the Bulls to their first ever bowl game when they played Connecticut in the 2009
International Bowl.
The 2008 season featured one of the most explosive offenses in school history. Gill, who
handled the play calling, commanded an offense that scored a school-record 424 points. Quarterback Drew Willy threw for a school-record 3,304 yards and 25 touchdowns, running back
James Starks ran for a school-record 1,333 yards and 16 touchdowns and wideout Naaman
Roosevelt established school records of 104 receptions, 1,402 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Gill was named the MAC Coach of the Year by The Sporting News and was named a finalist
for the Paul Bear Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award.
For his many efforts in bringing national respect to the Bulls’ football program, Gill received
a contract extension through 2013 in December of 2008.
“On the day I came here to be the head coach I told my team that one day we would
be successful here at the University at Buffalo,” said Gill. “Now, more than ever, I have never
been more proud to be the head coach of this program at this great academic institution.
This program has proven it can win now and it is built to continue to win in the future. I am
grateful to President John Simpson and Athletic Director Warde Manuel for their continued
support and faith in me as a football coach and leader of young men.
“I additionally want to thank our coaching staff and support staff for all they have done
that has allowed us to have success in our football program,” said Gill.
Manuel was pleased to sign Gill to the extension. “I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of Turner, his coaching staff and his team,” said Manuel. “They have brought
unprecedented attention to the University at Buffalo and have been great ambassadors for
the school. I am thrilled that Turner will remain as our head coach, and with President John
Simpson, am elated to reward him and his staff for their efforts.”
During the 2007 season, Gill earned Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honors
after leading the Bulls to five wins. UB finished with a 5-3 conference record, including a 4-2
mark in the MAC East Division to claim a share of the regular season title.
In addition, under Gill’s tutelage Buffalo had eight players selected to the All-MAC after
having just seven in their first eight years of conference play. The Bulls had eight MAC Players of the Week had two players on national semifinal “watch lists” – Ben Woods (Ray Guy
Award – top punter) and Trevor Scott (Ted Hendricks Award – top defensive end), while senior
center Jamey Richard was invited to play in the Hula Bowl and earned an invitation to the
NFL Combine.
Three of UB’s eight All-MAC players came from Gill’s first two recruiting classes, including
safety Davonte Shannon, a true freshman, who became UB’s first All-MAC first-team selection.
Buffalo enjoyed its first winning record at home since moving up to Division I-A and its two
MAC road wins was also its best effort since joining the conference.
Quarterback Drew Willy completed 258 passes and had the highest pass efficiency rating
in school history and running back James Starks became the Bulls’ first 1,000-yard rusher in
the I-A era with 1,103 yards.
The Texas native made an immediate impact in his first year as he led the Bulls to a number
of firsts. In 2006, Buffalo scored the most points in a season (220) since moving to Division
I-A. UB also scored the most points (201) of any team in the MAC East Division and defeated
the first team – Kent State – with a winning record since joining Mid-American Conference
in 1999.
Gill has reached the pinnacle of college football as both a player and a coach, he was part of
three national championships as a coach at the University of Nebraska and a Heisman Trophy
finalist as a player. He become the 23rd head football coach at the University at Buffalo on
December 16, 2005.
Gill, 47, who spent the 2005 season serving as Player Development Director and Offensive
Assistant with the Green Bay Packers, was lauded as one of the nation’s top recruiters while
an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1992-2004. The Cornhuskers won national titles in 1994,
1995 and 1997 during that span.
Gill, who was selected following a national search, brings with him tremendous success
2009 Buffalo Bulls Football
as both a player and coach. Consider how few head coaches in America can claim to have:
• As a player, to have never lost a conference game as a starter; to have led his team to the
national championship game and to have been a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (won by his
teammate).
• As a coach, to be on the sidelines for three national championships and to have coached
an individual who won the Heisman Trophy.
UB President John B. Simpson said that Gill’s hiring “is great news for UB, marking not just
an important step forward in our continuing work to build a strong, competitive athletic
program, but also a key outcome of our university-wide commitment to institutional excellence.”
During his tenure at Nebraska, Gill served as an assistant coach for College Football Hall
of Famer Tom Osborne, current Ohio University head coach Frank Solich and Bill Callahan. He
tutored the Huskers’ quarterbacks from 1992-2002, was named assistant head football coach
in 2003, and served as wide receivers coach in 2004.
During the height of Nebraska football in the 1990s, with Gill serving as quarterbacks
coach, the Cornhuskers had unprecedented success at both the quarterback position and
as a team. Gill - rated one of the top ten recruiters in the nation in 2000 and 2001 by ESPN.
com - played a vital role in Nebraska’s three national titles, and mentored a string of recordbreaking quarterbacks, from Tommie Frazier to Jamaal Lord to 2001 Heisman Trophy winner
Eric Crouch.
Crouch, Frazier and Lord rank as the top three total career offense leaders in Nebraska history (while Gill, himself, ranks eighth). Crouch won the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award
(top player in the nation) and the Davey O’Brien Award (nation’s top quarterback) as well as
being a first-team All-American in 2001 under Gill’s tutelage.
Frazier was also a first-team All-American, Johnny Unitas Award winner and Heisman Trophy
finalist in 1995, and led Nebraska to back-to-back national championships (1994-95). Both
Fraizer and Crouch were tabbed as Big 12 Offensive Players of the Year. Gill also mentored a
pair of Big 12 Conference Offensive Newcomers of the Year in Frazier and Scott Frost (1996).
Frost would lead Nebraska to another national title in 1997.
In 2002, he was nominated and among the finalists for the Frank Broyles Award, given
annually to the top assistant coach in the nation. He was regarded by several sources as one
of the top recruiters in the nation.
“Turner is an outstanding human being,” said former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne,
a member of the College Football Hall of Famer and one of the winningest coaches in college football history. “He has great character. He’s a great family man, an excellent recruiter,
he relates well to his players and he really works well with people. He’ll always represent the
program well. He is very knowledege as far as football goes. I have nothing but the greatest
admiration for him.”
Before accepting the job at Buffalo, Gill served as the direct liaison to players and their
families as the Player Development Director. He also served as an offensive assistant, with a
focus on wide receivers. He began his coaching career at Southern Methodist University as
receivers coach in 1991.
Gill’s outstanding coaching career mirrors a memorable playing career that culminated
with him being named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 1983 (finishing fourth behind
teammate Mike Rozier) and earning a berth on the All-Decade Big Eight team (1980-89) as
the starting quarterback.
Gill, a native of Fort Worth, TX, was the starting quarterback at Nebraska from 1981-83
and led the team to a No. 2 and No. 3 national ranking. Overall, Nebraska teams had a 28-2
overall record with Gill as the starting quarterback and a 20-0 record in Big Eight conference
play. He is the 12th winningest QB in NCAA Div. I history.
He spent two seasons as quarterback of the Montreal Concordes of the Canadian Football
League, leading his team to playoff berths in 1984 and 1985.
One of the most respected student-athletes in Nebraska athletics history, Gill earned the
Tom Novak Award for Outstanding Leaadership and Character as well as the Herbert Marshall
Award for leadership. He has been inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, the
Orange Bowl Hall of Fame, was a three-time All Big Eight selection, and was the MVP of the
Orange Bowl and Kickoff Classic. A multi-talented athlete, Gill also spent three seasons in the
minor league systems of the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas
in 1990.
He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and was named to the
AFCA Board of Trustees in January 2009. As a member of AFCA he has served on the Ethics
Committee since 2007. He is also active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Gill has also served as a Spokesperson for the United Way and as honorary chairman for
Cystic Fibrosis, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
He and his wife Gayle have two daughters, Jordan (18) and Margaux (14).
