Dear Reader
Alptransit AG
A certain breakthrough is opening up new perspectives and connections: the first weekend in
June will see the grand opening of the Gotthard
Base tunnel and, with it, completely new prospects for north and south. At 57 kilometres in
length, it is a world-record-breaking tunnel.
28,200,000 tonnes of rock were excavated during
the construction process – particles of which you
can find on the special stamps with a gutter.
At the end of August, our champion Swiss wrestlers will be offering up fierce battles in the sawdust, fighting for the coveted laurel wreath in
Estavayer-le-Lac. A special sheet of stamps with
a vignette in the centre pays tribute to the traditional Swiss sport.

While we humans sleep the sleep of the just, it’s
time for four of our animal friends to come out to
play: the “Nocturnal animals” set presents creatures that few of us are lucky enough to catch a
glimpse of in the wild.
This year’s combination print whisks us off to
north-eastern Switzerland – to the beautiful, idyllic region of Lake Constance. The motif is sure to
put you in a holiday mood.

The new set of Pro Patria stamps (with surcharge)
showcases fortresses and castles. Picture yourself as a damsel or a noble knight, strolling
through the ancient buildings.
This year’s Europa stamp is dedicated to the topic
“Think Green”, prompting us all to take care of the
natural world and to be more aware of the consequences of our actions.

2016 issuing programme: Stamps and postal stationery from Swiss Post
The second half of the year and
still going strong
It’s full steam ahead for the new “Swiss
railway stations” definitive stamp set,
which is due to replace all existing definitive stamps (Vegetable blossoms, Traditional handicrafts and Mushrooms).
Highly developed production technology
enables a perfect presentation of delightful motifs, and another classic Swiss
landscape transports us to beautiful Ticino. While aerophilately is celebrating its
50-year anniversary, Swiss Post is dedicating a special stamp with a surcharge
to a dark period of Swiss history.
The stamp offering for 2016 will be
rounded off with a celebrity stamp featuring music stars, Christmas stamps, a
new set of Pro Juventute stamps, a miniature sheet for Stamp Day in Oberaargau
and a joint issue with the Dominican Republic.

A stunning souvenir of
the Base tunnel
01
The “Gottardo 2016” souvenir pays tribute to the extraordinary achievement of
constructing the world’s longest tunnel.
The 37-page book tells the fascinating story of the Gotthard and offers insights into
the building of both old and new tunnels.
The information is in 4 languages (Ge/Fr/
It/En). It also contains a wealth of historical and modern photographs and illustrations. The centrefold and accompanying original stamps “Gottardo 2016”, “100
years of the Lötschberg Railway” and
“100 years of the Gotthard Railway” make
the product a valuable collector’s item –
not just for stamp collectors and railway
enthusiasts!

Millionen Tonnen Ausbruchmaterial aus dem Tunnel.
Beim Hauptdurchschlag im
Oktober 2010 betrug die Abweichung dank Lasertechnik
bloss wenige Zentimeter.
Zwei Multifunktionsstellen
in Faido und Sedrun unterteilen die beiden Tunnelröhren in drei ungefähr gleich
lange Abschnitte. Hier befinden sich die Nothaltestellen
und je zwei Spurwechsel.
Sie ermöglichen, dass Züge
von einer Röhre in die andere
wechseln können.
Alle 325 Meter sind die beiden
Röhren durch Querschläge
14 miteinander verbunden.
In diesen 176 Querschlägen
sind technische Anlagen
für den Bahnbetrieb untergebracht. Im Ereignisfall
dienen sie als Fluchtwege in
die andere Röhre. Deshalb
sind sie mit Brandschutztüren ausgestattet.
Die Züge im Tunnel werden
auf Gleisen fahren, deren
Schwellen fest einbetoniert
sind. Dadurch verkleinert
sich der Aufwand für den
Unterhalt, und der Fahrkomfort wird grösser. Insgesamt
wurden im Basistunnel rund
1400 Kilometer Schienen
verlegt.
Die Bahnstromversorgung
erfolgt durch Unterwerke,
die aus dem Hochspannungsnetz der SBB gespeist
werden. Für die Versorgung
des Basistunnels werden
insgesamt fünf Unterwerke
neu errichtet oder ausgebaut.
Vier elektronische Stellwerke der neuesten Generation
steuern und überwachen den
Betrieb im Tunnel. Gesteuert
werden sie von der Betriebsleitzentrale 16 in Pollegio.
Der Bahnverkehr ist vollständig automatisiert, Eingriffe durch die Fahrdienstleiter sind in der Regel nicht
notwendig.
Die Strecke durch den
Basistunnel ist mit der elektronischen Führerstandsignalisierung «European
Train Control System» –
Level 2 (ETCS) ausgerüstet.
Der Lokführer erhält alle
Informationen über Funk
auf die Anzeige im Führerstand 15 . Dank ETCS können
die geplanten Geschwindigkeiten für Personenzüge
von bis zu 250 Stundenkilometern erreicht werden.
Es erhöht die Sicherheit
und ermöglicht Kapazitätssteigerungen durch kürzere
Zugfolgezeiten. Die Neubaustrecke ist so ausgelegt,
dass die Züge im Abstand
von drei Minuten verkehren
können.

Special stamp Swiss wrestling
Battling it out in
breeches
When the Swiss wrestlers flex their muscles in August, they don’t want to end up
on their backs in the sawdust.
The tailors who create the Swiss wrestling sports accessories are based in Emmental, are saddlers by profession and
have recently completed their summer
2016 collection. The breeches (including
a belt) are available in natural beige and
dark brown. They come in seven sizes
and boast reinforced seams, which are
up to six times stronger than standard
10
seams. The extremely tough fabric
known as “Zwilch” (jute) consists of twist
for the warp and linen imported from the
east for the weft. These items are reserved exclusively for the top wrestlers
who will be taking part in the Swiss
Wrestling and Alpine Festival in Estavayer-le-Lac from 26 to 28 August 2016 to decide the title winner for the coming three
years. The young bull Mazot de Cremo,
which will be presented to the winner, is
black and white, in keeping with the official colours of the host canton. The prizes
also include this evocative sheet of
stamps, which can be purchased by
those not likely to win it with their wrestling skills.
And wait for the result:
with a perfect hip throw,
the opponent can be
laid down on his back.

Special stamps with surcharge Pro Patria – Fortresses and castles of Switzerland
A testimony to Swiss chivalry
Charitable foundation Pro Patria is taking up the cudgels for a historical period
of fortress and castle building in Switzerland. The era calls to mind courageous
knights, dainty damsels and their heroic
feats:
… Heinrich, the knight known as “Schrutan” (the giant), saved a whole region
from a fire-breathing dragon. Benedict
knocked opponent after opponent from
their horses – saddles included – at the
grand joust of the nobility, to the applause of his knaves. Wolfram rescued a
damsel in distress from the clutches of
evil enemies and smiled mischievously
behind his visor …
Pro Patria – Fortresses and castles of Switzerland
The Swiss Pro Patria foundation uses
stamps with a tax surcharge to raise
funds in support of cultural and social
projects throughout Switzerland. This
year’s Pro Patria stamps portray Zug
Castle and Neu-Bechburg Oensingen
Castle from the “Fortresses and castles
of Switzerland” set (2016–2018).

Special stamps Nocturnal animals
Not all creatures are dull
in the dark – for some, it’s
the chance to go wild.
When the humans are away,
the animals will play
At night, when all good citizens make
their way to bed to sleep the sleep of the
just, it’s time for some creatures to really
start their revels and turn our night into
their day. Under cover of darkness, they
go in search of their prey – silently creeping, flying and lurking – and feast on their
bounty or attract potential mates to play
by the light of the silvery moon. Mother
Nature has equipped them well over the
14
course of evolution: with an acute sense
of hearing, highly sensitive sight, organs
of touch, radar-like systems, their own
light sources and many other aids. Swiss
Post is now devoting a set of special
stamps to four native nocturnal animals:
the tawny owl, the garden dormouse, the
European glow-worm and the hedgehog.
The stamps can, of course, be used night
and day.

Special stamps Lake Constance
Idyllic lake:
no gimmicks
Let’s get one thing clear from the start:
anyone hoping to spot a monster is going
to be disappointed. Surrounded by three
countries, the waters do not conceal any
sea creatures in the vein of Nessie, for example. With its wealth of islands, Lake
Constance is simply too idyllic for that.
However, anglers near Bregenz did recently catch a huge wels catfish measuring 2.5 metres in length. Experts even
suspect the existence of older and larger
specimens gliding through the depths,
measuring up to 3 metres in length and
weighing well over 100 kilograms. But
this shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying
their water-sports or indulging their fascination with the stunning sunsets and
fantastic cloud formations reflected in
the enormous mirrored surface. This natural wonder consists of three bodies of
water: the Obersee (upper lake), Untersee
(lower lake) and Seerhein, which links
the first two. The shoreline of this gem is
shared by three countries. So it is no surprise that Swiss Post has chosen to present its new special stamp as a triptych.
16
Lake Constance may stun visitors, but
its surprises are always of a pleasant kind.

Special stamps Europa – Ecology in Europe
Making greener choices
When it comes to the
environment, European
countries (and others)
are all in the same boat.
The planet has a climate problem: since
the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have risen by more than 142
percent, with concentrations of the
greenhouse gases methane and nitrous
oxide also rising by 253 and 121 percent
respectively. Something must be done.
As a climate scientist put it: “If the climate
were a bank, we would long since have
bailed it out.” According to calculations,
the point of no return for Miami, for example, is set to be reached in 2041 – if
global warming continues at its current
rate. After that, there will be no guarantee that the city (along with all its banks)
will not disappear beneath the waves
one day. It is a scenario reminiscent of
disaster movies. But let’s not paint a
wholly dark picture. Instead, let’s re
double our efforts to save the planet:
think green – be green! To serve as a
r eminder, the European postal organizations, including Swiss Post, are issuing
joint special stamps in 2016.
You can look forward to the multilateral
product in the 3/2016 issue!
