media information 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall
Press Information: 25th anniversary
of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Summary
7–9 November: the highlight of celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the peaceful
revolution and the fall of the Wall will be a 15 km "Border of Light" consisting of 8,000
illuminated balloons between Bornholmer Straße and the Oberbaumbrücke. The people and
their courageous call for freedom are the central focus of the weekend.
The celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall begin at 5.00 pm
Friday, 7 November and last through the night of Sunday, 9 November.
The 15 km light installation will run along the former border where the Wall once divided
Berlin's city centre. The installation will consist of 8,000 illuminated balloons filled with helium
on poles along the former path of the Berlin Wall through the city centre between
Bornholmer Straße and Oberbaumbrücke.
The celebrations will focus on those persons who worked courageously for the freedom of the
East German people, a movement which eventually led to the opening of the inner-German
border on the night of 9 November 1989. The stories of these East German citizens will be told
with 100 information boards along the 15 km stretch of the light installation.
Eyewitnesses have volunteered to share their personal stories of the Wall on 7–8 November as
part of the "Service in the City" initiative organised by visitBerlin. They will be found along the
15 km lighting installation between the Brandenburg Gate and the East Side Gallery to help
visitors get orientated and provide information about the weekend's events. They will also
share their personal stories upon request; please contact us to arrange interviews, however.
Eyewitnesses will also be sharing their stories the afternoon of Sunday, 9 November, at the
major festival being organised by the Federal Government with two stages in front of the
Brandenburg Gate. The festival will also include the signal for the balloons to be released into
the air: balloon sponsors will detach their balloons and let them climb into the Berlin night sky
as a symbol of the Wall's fall 25 years ago.
Media representatives can access various information services related to the celebrations.
Contact partners are visitBerlin as the tourism partner for the City of Berlin, Kulturprojekte
Berlin GmbH as organiser of the "Border of Light", and the Federal Press Office for details
about the national celebration in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
The Federal Press Office will be setting up a press centre, where all visitBerlin press materials
will also be available. Further details and how to obtain press credentials for events
organised by the federal and state governments, you will find in this document.
The most important information will be constantly updated at press.visitBerlin.de and

MAUERGESCHICHTEN — LICHTGRENZE — BALLONAKTION

The center of Berlin will be temporarily divided from November
7th-9th: 8,000 illuminated balloons mark the former route of the
Wall. The 15 km long LICHTGRENZE also evokes the countless
candles that became a touching symbol for non-violence during
the Peaceful Revolution in 1989. Its emotional and visual
force will recall the dimension of the Wall. Each balloon patron
will send a balloon with a personal message regarding the
anniversary on its way.

KULTURRADIO

Mit diesen Worten belog Walter Ulbricht, der Staatschef der DDR,
1961 die ganze Welt. Kurze Zeit später, am frühen Morgen des

WALL STORIES — “No one has the intention of building a wall!”
Were the words with which Walter Ulbricht, head of state of the
GDR, lied to the entire world. Shortly thereafter, in the early
morning of August 13, the SED-regime closed the boarder to
West-Berlin. The city would remain divided for 28 years. 100 Wall
stories all along the LICHTGRENZE relect hope and despair. They
are about successful and tragic escapes, incredible coincidences,
about a resistance that never waned. They give hope that – no
matter where in the world – the separation of a city or a country
can never be of permanence.

The Wall Stories on the way to the East Side Gallery are all
about bold escape attempts. At least 136 people lost their lives
at the Berlin Wall. 5,075 forbidden border crossings ended up
successful. More than 70 escape tunnel had been dug along
the Wall, only about one in ive was successful. The East Side
Gallery at the riverside in Friedrichshain is the longest surviving
piece of Inner Wall. In 1990 more than 100 artists from
20 countries painted this so called “Hinterlandmauer” – the irst
obstruction before the death strip. This wall has become a
famous work of art. The more than 1 km long open air gallery
is protected by landmark status. The guided walking tour
“Oberbaumbrücke – a bridge between boroughs that were
worlds apart” starts right here. On a side note, once a year
people from the boroughs of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain get
together on the bridge to have a giant veggie battle. Radioeins
will broadcast live from the riverside, and reporters will mingle
with the crowds to capture the real thing.
More than 20,000 people helped build the Wall on 13 August, 1961.
The Wall would be continually expanded over the next years.
The government wanted to prevent its own populace from escaping.
Propaganda slogans like this were posted all along the border.

MAUERPARK
Brandenburg Gate — Potsdamer Platz —
Checkpoint Charlie 2.2 km / est. walking time 30 min.
After the rush to the border crossings in November 1989 people
danced on top of the Wall at Brandenburg Gate. Momentous
images went around the world, and today the heart of the city
beats all around this landmark. Once one of the busiest places
in Europe Potsdamer Platz had turned into war damaged wasteland and border area after 1945. After the Fall of the Wall a new
neighborhood has emerged here. On this walk you will come to
encounter a story about so-called “Mauerspechte” or wall chiselers.
Small, certiied pieces of the Wall are still available as souvenirs.
Some of the larger segments have been moved to places like
the Peace Park in Uijeongbu, Republic of Korea or the Andrei
Sakharov Museum and Community Center in Moscow.
Yadegar Asisi’s gigantic panorama at the former border crossing
Checkpoint Charlie makes daily life with the Wall in 1980s
West Berlin come alive. Not far away the Black Box Cold War
offers 16 media stations with the history of the Cold War confrontation. At the Wall Museum you can see the most incredible
means of escape, ranging from a hot air balloon to a chair lift.

The tour starts at a memorable spot: Bornholmer Strasse was the
irst border crossing where East Germans enforced the opening
of the border on 9 November, 1989. Starting at 920 p.m. the irst
East Berliners poured into the West Berlin working class neighborhood Wedding. By 11 p.m. more than 20,000 people had
passed just through this one border crossing. Angela Merkel was
one of them, today she is the German Chancellor. One Wall Story
is Siegbert Schefke’s, who was one of the irst people to pass
the border (there is a story every 150 m). Every hour there will
be walking tours with the topic “Life and Resistance in the
Shadow of the Wall”, starting at Mauerpark. Radio FRITZ will
broadcast from the popular restaurant “Mauersegler”, complete
with live concerts. The Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse
opens a new exhibition on 9 November. The 1.4 km long outdoor
exhibition portrays the malicious construction of the border
fortiications, and it commemorates spectacular escapes and all
those who lost their lives at the Wall.
