From your appearance to your body language and behavior, it is all about image. Biography Spanky, who lives in Canyon, Texas, is the founder of the auctioneering firm Assiter & Associates. He has been an Auctioneer for 25 years and has hosted approximately 4,000 auctions. In 2007 he was inducted into the Texas Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame and the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame. Spanky was elected president of the NAA Board of Directors in July 2015 in Addison, Texas. Ten Characteristics of a Leader Biography John is President of Nicholls Auction Marketing Group, Inc., and oversees all day to day operations of the company. As a second generation auctioneer, John is licensed in 11 states and the District of Columbia, and holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees. In 1990, John graduated from the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA, and is currently one of their featured instructors. John currently conducts over 350 auctions per year for Fortune 500 companies and is a licensed realtor. Under John's leadership, Nicholls Auction was named Business of the Year by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. John is currently the Vice President of the National Auctioneers Association, and will assume the Presidency in July of 2016. In addition, John has been a featured speaker at many state auctioneer associations throughout the country. John has had the honor to represent the auction profession on the TODAY Show, the National Association of Realtors Convention, St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital, multiple news publications, and on a real estate auction consulting trip to South Africa. John is also one of auctioneer's at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and Fasig-Tipton Thoroughbred Auctions. John is active at Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, VA, where he resides with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Sophie. Tom Saturley, CAI Past President of the National Auctioneers Association Legal Issues and the Auctioneer This 90-minute session will cover how the law affects who you are, the business you seek and how you conduct business. Ethics and Professionalism This 60-90-minute program will help you identify why the National Auctioneers Association Code of Ethics is important and how you can use it as part of your business plan. Strategic Planning and the Leadership Skills to Execute This 60-90-minute program will help you identify what kind of leadership skills you need to execute your personal and professional business plan. Biography Tom lives in Portland, Maine. As president of Tranzon Auction Properties, he conducts approximately 100 real estate and business liquidation auctions per year. He is licensed to sell real estate and conduct auctions in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. Tom is an attorney in Maine and New Hampshire, and was former Assistant Attorney General in Maine. He is a member of the Maine Auctioneers Association, New Hampshire Auctioneers Association, and the Massachusetts State Auctioneers Association. He has been a member of the NAA since 1991 and was awarded the President’s Award of Distinction. In 2012, then President Christie King, CAI, AARE, BAS appointed Tom to serve as her appointee to the NAA Board of Directors. The following year, then President J.J. Dower, CAI, AARE, ATS continued Tom’s appointment making Tom the only person who has ever served two presidential appointee terms on the NAA Board of Directors. Tom was elected to serve as President of the NAA Board in July 2014. James Devin Ford, CAI, CES Treasurer of the National Auctioneers Association Agricultural Real Estate Multi-Parcel Auctions Online vs Live Auctions Biography J. Devin Ford is a professional auctioneer with Ford Brothers, Inc., a Marknet Alliance member in London, Kentucky. He is a second generation auctioneer specializing in real estate and liquidation auctions. Devin has been a licensed auctioneer and member of the National Auctioneers Association since 1990 after attending Worldwide College of Auctioneering. He is a past president of the Kentucky Auctioneers Association, Kentucky State Champion Auctioneer, Kentucky State Champion of Champions and a member of the KAA Hall of Fame. He was elected to the NAA Board of Directors in Spokane, Washington and completed his third year of a three year term. He is now NAA Treasurer. His company's business is conducting a growing number of online auctions. Jason Winter, CAI, AARE, CES Education Institute Chair of the National Auctioneers Association The Proposal The proposal is ‘for better or worse,’ just like a marriage. When we book and auction we are there ‘for better or worse.’ Jason will take you through the proposal process, types of proposals, the art of listening and the importance of selective speaking. Real Estate Auctions from Commencement to Consummation Booking the real estate auction to closing the real estate transaction is no small task. Jason walks us through the ever tedious path of the ‘real estate deal’ where we hope resting at the end of the path are happy sellers, happy buyers and a well-deserved commission check for the auction firm. Biography Jason is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a degree in Ag Business. He went from college to World Wide College of Auctioneering, Mason City, Iowa in March 1993. In 2008, Jason won the distinctive honor of “Missouri Auctioneer Bid Calling Champion.” Jason served as a Trustee for the NAA Education Institute from 2013-2015 and is currently the 2015-2016 Chair of the Trustees. Jason, along with his wife Jennifer, and two daughters Jocelyn and Julianna, own West Central Auction Company. West Central Auction Company specializes in real estate auctions. They also sell estates, business and personal property and conduct benefit auctions throughout the Midwest. In addition to the auction business, Jason owns Century 21 West Central where he is the Broker. Jason teaches continuing education at the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors. Biography Mike is President of United Country Auction Services and Texas Auction Academy. And as such, Mike oversees the national’s largest integrated real estate and auction franchise system. An Auctioneer since 1978, Mike has conducted over 2,000 auctions. He served as the 56th President of the National Auctioneers Association, is the 1998 International Auctioneer Champion, 1995 Texas Auctioneers Association president and a Hall of Fame member. Mike has served as a Trustee for the NAA Foundation since 2010 and is currently serving as Vice President. In this role, he also serves on the NAA Board and its Executive Committee. Matt Corso, CAI, CES Board Member of the National Auctioneers Association Big Data…It’s a Big Deal You’ve heard people talk about data and that collecting it is important, but are you collecting everything you need, getting it from every source you can? And, once you have the data, what are you doing with it? During this 90-minute program we will dive into the world of big data and how it can change our businesses and industry. This 60-90 minute program will talk about ways to not only make sure your website and bidding platforms are mobile friendly, but also what other mobiles technologies are out there for you to incorporate into your business. We will also take a look at some Google analytics so you can see the impact that mobile technology is having on your business. Want to Book Bigger Deals? Learn to Use Better Processes This 60-90 minute session will go over the importance of having a process driven business. Whether you are a one-man shop or a 20-person staff, we will talk about ways to incorporate processes into your business to allow you to book more deals, bigger deals and run them more efficiently. Biography Matt Corso is currently the Chief Financial Officer for MarkNet Alliance, an alliance of auction companies located throughout the United States and South Africa. MarkNet Alliance conducts over 6,000 live and online auctions annually. He previously served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, a position he held since MarkNet’s inception. Prior to his employment with MarkNet Alliance, Matt served as the Chief Operating Officer of Aumann Auctions Inc., a nationwide auction firm specializing in several niche markets as well as real estate. Matt has completed the Certified Auctioneers Institute program held at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana and earned the CAI designation and also holds the Certified Estate Specialist designation. He is a member of the Illinois Auctioneers Association, along with the National Auctioneers Association. Matt is currently serving on the school board at Visionway Christian School. He previously served on the Board of Directors and as the managing editor for the Breeze-Courier newspaper in Taylorville, Illinois for seven years prior to his work at Aumann Auctions. He has been a mentor to grade school children through the Taylorville Mentoring Program and has also been active in teaching youth classes and playing music in his local church. He also helps coach youth football, baseball and basketball. Matt is married to Abbey Corso and has two daughters, Gracie and Mylie and one son, Isaac. Joseph M. Mast, CAI Board Member of the National Auctioneers Association Bid Calling in Diverse Markets In this seminar, we will discuss the different markets for auction and how to change your style to accommodate these differences. Biography Joseph, owner of Real Estate Showcase Company, was born to a sixth generation dairy farmer in the Amish community of Millersburg, Ohio. He went from seeing his family’s cows sold at the auction barn to owning a major real estate auction company, traveling the world selling cars, real estate, equipment and thoroughbred race horses for millions of dollars and is now recognized as one of the world’s best bid-calling auctioneers. After attending Goshen College, Joseph attended Missouri Auction School and quickly fell in love with the profession. At the age of 24, Joseph branched out and acquired his real estate license. Joseph joined Real Estate Showcase Company in 2004 and purchased the company in 2008. Also in 2008, Joseph joined Barrett-Jackson’s elite auction team as its youngest member. In 2010, he joined the auction team at Fasig-Tipton Auction Company. In 2011, Joseph won the coveted title of International Auctioneer Champion. At the age of 30, he is the youngest IAC champion to date. Tim Mast, CAI, AARE Board Member of the National Auctioneers Association Five Keys to Successful Real Estate Auctions This seminar will touch on the five keys; deal qualification, strategic selection of auction type, due diligence materials, marketing plans and contact management. Biography Tim is in his fifteenth year in the auction business and is Executive Vice President at Tranzon Asset Advisors. He is a lifelong resident of southwestern Tennessee, where he resides and has his office. Tim is a graduate of the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City Iowa, and successfully completed all course and testing work for his Tennessee Real Estate Broker’s License, Auctioneers License and has gone on to become licensed in Arkansas, South Carolina and Mississippi as well. Tim has completed the Accredited Auctioneer of Real Estate (AARE) course, provided through the National Auctioneer’s Association Education Institute and has been awarded the Designation of AARE. He has also completed the three year process of Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) training, which is offered through the University of Indiana in conjunction with the National Auctioneers Association Education Institute. Tim has been awarded the designation of CAI which is considered the most prestigious designation offered to auctioneers. Mr. Mast served on the education committee for the Tennessee Auctioneers Association for several years. In 2006 he was installed as Vice President for the western district of Tennessee, in 2008 he was elected to the position of President-Elect and on December 6, 2009 was sworn in as President of the Tennessee Auctioneers Association to serve a one year term. He has also served as the National Auctioneer’s Association Ambassador for the state of TN and in July 2014 was elected to the board of directors of the NAA. In 2013 Tim was inducted into the Tennessee Auctioneer’s Association hall of fame and is the youngest person in its history to receive that honor. Due to his success and dedication to the industry he has become a sought after speaker on the subject real estate auctions. Tim also serves his community as a volunteer firefighter and is active in several local civic organizations. Prior to his introduction and full time devotion to the real estate, and accelerated marketing industry he owned and operated a successful home maintenance company and separately a credit factoring firm. Tim has now divested of those companies and is fully dedicated to the clients he services throughout the United States. Using his natural skill for negotiating coupled with a commitment to continuing education, he has been exceptionally successful in working through large and complicated property transactions spanning approximately 30 states and three countries. As a young man, in connection with his family interests, he resided for a two-year timeframe in Bolivia, South America, where he learned to speak fluent Spanish, growing up in his household he also learned and is fluent in German. Tim’s family life is active; he lives with his wife Ruth Anne and their four children Lilah, Wyatt, Kaitlynn and Peyton. He studied auctioneering at the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, North Carolina and then went on to work in the contemporary art department of Sotheby’s in New York. Will served as a salesperson and Regional Vice President with J.P. King Auction Company, then developed the United States real estate auction division for Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers. In 2006, Will founded McLemore Auction Company, LLC and opened its Nashville headquarters. He has sold more than $75 million in real estate and personal property at auction. He served as Chairman of the NAA’s Education Institute and is a past President of the Middle Tennessee Auctioneers Group and past Vice President of the Tennessee Auctioneers Association. In 2015, he was elected to a three-year term on the NAA Board of Directors. Scott H. Shuman, CAI Board Member of the National Auctioneers Association Slumdog Auctioneer The presentation is based on actual experiences (successes and failures) in the real estate world. Scott will share tips and strategies of what not to do. If you are just starting your auction career or are a seasoned veteran, you will want to make sure to attend. Breaking Bad Questions that should be asked to break from bad auctions to good ones. In this interactive session, participants will also explore where and how to find new business. Biography Scott is a real estate partner and Auctioneer for Hall and Hall Auctions. He has more than 29 years of auction experience. He attending Missouri Auction School in 1986 and opened an auction firm shortly thereafter. He was awarded the 1997 and 2002 Auction of the Year awards from the NAA, as well as the prestigious Rose Award presented at the Certified Auctioneers Institute. Scott has severed as an instructor for CAI and Trustee for the NAA Education Institute. In 2014, he was elected to a three-year term on the NAA Board of Directors. He holds auction and real estate licenses in 21 states. Scott and his wife, Krista, reside in Eaton, Colorado with their three children. David P. Whitley, CAI, CES Board Member of the National Auctioneers Association How to Still Make Money with Small Estate Auctions An interactive discussion about how to make money and conduct auctions for estates that will gross under $10,000. We will discuss ways to use guarantees, fees and commissions to make these auctions profitable as well as the use of internet only auctions to sell the items in place. Create a Company Facebook Page and Use It to Build Your Business This is an interactive class where the presenter will work with one attendee in front of the group to create a Facebook company page right then and place ads for an upcoming auction. Paid Facebook ads are the hottest marketing opportunity for many auction companies currently. Auctions and the Law A basic level refresher class about how the law can and does affect us in the auction business. This broad class discusses general principals and ideas. It is designed to hopefully keep you on the right side of the law and out of the courtroom. Biography David is the lead auctioneer for Rocky Mountain Estate Brokers and is the 2003 Colorado Champion Auctioneer. He is a graduate of the Certified Auctioneers Institute and serves on the board of directors of the Colorado Auctioneers Association. He served as a member of the Education Institute Trustees from and as their chair in 2013-2014. In July 2014, he was elected to the NAA Board of Directors. David currently chairs the NAA Advocacy Committee. Biography Hannes Combest was named as Chief Executive Officer for the National Auctioneers Association beginning in June of 2008. Prior to her work at NAA, she served members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for more than 12 years in various capacities. She has a master’s degree from Baker University and is a Certified Association Executive. In 2014, she was awarded the NAA President’s Award of Distinction. Hannes is active in the American Society of Association Executives as a member of the Research Committee and is past-president of the Kansas City Society of Association Executives, which in 2005 awarded her the Professional Excellence Award and in 2010 awarded her the Distinguished Association Executive award. She has four children and nine grandchildren. Business and personal branding management and influencing opinion coupled with a conversation on balancing personal and professional life in the maturing space know as Social Media. Biography Peter is a first generation auctioneer focusing on the sale of real estate, automobiles and significant collections at auction. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Ohio State University, is a graduate of the Ohio Auction School and Hondros College. He is the Past Auctioneer Champion of Michigan (2010), Indiana (2011) and Ohio (2015), and is the current Vice President of the Ohio Auctioneers Association. Peter has served as a Trustee of the Education Institute since 2014 and currently serves as Vice Chair. In 2015, Peter was named the NAA International Auctioneer Champion, Men’s Division. Biography Jimmie Dean began his auction and real estate profession in 1983, upon graduation from the Reppert School of Auctioneering. He was married in 1984. He and his wife have two children. Jimmie Dean and his wife Phyllis are very active in their church as small group leaders as well as Jimmie Dean being a Deacon. Since 1983 he has conducted many successful auctions across Indiana as well as across the Country. Jimmie Dean held an Indiana real estate salesperson license from 1985 - 1988. He received an Indiana Real Estate Broker license in 1988. He has been selling real estate both as a licensed real estate broker and at auction since 1985. Jimmie Dean has conducted the sale of residential homes, vacant land and commercial real estate nationwide. He has been very successful in the sale of real estate, fundraising as well as personal property such as business liquidations, business surplus, estates as well as farm and construction equipment.
