11 S. Buesching Road
Friday, December 11
4:30-8:00pm
Ela Township’s elected officials and Ela Township 55 + are delighted
to host the annual Happy Holidays Dinner Dance. It will be held in Fr.
Valker Hall, downstairs at St. Francis de Sales Church from 4:30–
8:00pm.
With well over 300 guests attending, this is always a magical and fun
night. Just as amazing are all of the volunteers that help make this night
possible! From making centerpieces to serving dinner, every detail is
covered. The outpouring of generosity from our community is a wonderful sight to see this time of year. Due to the increasingly large
number of attendees, the dinner dance will be limited to Ela
Township residents 55 and over only. Sorry, but we will not be
able to accommodate guests from outside of our township.
Doors will not open until 4:30, please do not arrive prior to this
as you will not be allowed into the building. Refreshments and snacks
will be served at 5:00, with dancing accompanied by music by Jason
Gold’s Mini Big Band. After a holiday blessing, dinner will be served
at 6:00pm. There will be raffles and gift baskets throughout the night.
The raffle winners will be drawn at 7:30pm.
Admission into this annual holiday event is a minimum donation
of $5 per person. The proceeds benefit Emmaus House Community
Dinner and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, both serving local
families and seniors.
Registration is required and will close on December 4.
Ela Township buses will be available at no charge for those
who need a ride, please call Ela Township Dial-A-Ride
at 847-438-6677.
….Tis better to give than to receive!
Every year the proceeds from our
Annual Holiday Dinner Dance benefit Emmaus House Community
Dinner and the St. Vincent de Paul
Food Pantry. If you are unaware
of what these charities do, here is
some vital information to help enlighten you.
Emmaus House is comprised of 3 major arms; the weekly
Sunday Night Community Dinner, Food Rescue, and the
Housing Program. Donations are used to provide services
to local area families and individuals who are experiencing
financial challenges. Additionally, Emmaus administers
the Ela-Emmaus Diaper Program which provides diapers,
formula and other baby related items to qualifying Ela
resident families. For further information on how to
donate time or resources please visit www.emmaushouse.org or call 847-814-0212.
St. Vincent DePaul sponsors the Thursday Night Food Pantry, serving approximately 500 people weekly throughout
Lake County. The Pantry is reliant on volunteers, food and
monetary donations. The organization sponsors various
drives throughout the year to support their mission. Caseworkers review and provide assistance for people in need.

Chair Yoga is a unique yoga style that adapts yoga positions and
poses through creative use of a yoga chair. The chair replaces the
yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body. The student is
able to warm up the body safely and perform yoga poses with more
support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or the
chair is used for support during standing poses, forward and
backward bends, side extensions, balancing, and leg and arm
stretches. Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and
physical conditions.
Dress in loose, comfortable clothing and if possible, bring a water
bottle. Blocks and straps will be supplied.
This class is for anyone worried about their mid section. Our
experienced and knowledgeable instructor will coach and
demonstrate proper exercise techniques. This mat based
class promises to be safe, fun and challenging.
Pilates presents a method as the art of controlled movements,
which should look and feel like a workout (not a therapy)
when properly manifested. If practiced with consistency,
Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops
control and endurance in the whole body. It puts emphasis on
alignment, breathing, developing a strong powerhaus, and
improving coordination and balance. Pilates' system allows
for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty
from beginner to advanced. Intensity can be increased over
time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

Patton
By: Barry Bradford
Friday, October 30
Noon-1:30pm
NEW
George S. Patton was a man of contradictions – charismatic,
cunning, courageous, self-confident and superstitious, egotistical
and emotional. Along with Generals Washington, Grant and
Sherman, Patton was able to lead men to tremendous victories
through personal bravery, strategic initiative and sheer daring.
Among all the USA generals in WWII, he was the one the
Germans most feared.
His success on the battlefield is unquestioned. However, his odd
personality has been the subject of great speculation. In this fast
moving and fascinating multimedia presentation, we will explore
the unique background of a man of great controversy – and even
greater achievement!
The Doolittle Raid
By: Barry Bradford
Friday, November 20
Noon-1:30pm
The Doolittle Raid is one of the most
famous events of World War II.
It is also, on some levels, the most misunderstood.
The basics are right. Col. Jimmy Doolittle led an elite team of 80
men on one of the most dangerous missions of the Second World
War. They took medium range bombers off of the deck of an aircraft carrier, a feat that had never before been done. In revenge
for the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the Doolittle Raiders flew
low over the ocean on their way to bomb Japan. The Japanese
people, who had been assured by their Emperor that they were
invulnerable to foreign attack reacted in shock and horror at the
terrifying daytime attack. The Doolittle Raiders then attempted to
fly to China, unable to return to the ship or to American soil.
Some of the Raiders survived, some were killed on impact when
their planes crashed and some were captured and killed. Learn all
of the truths and myths of this pivotal raid.

Every holiday season, Ela Township 55 Plus takes an intergenerational trip to the theater. This year is no exception,. Oh, the things
you can think….when you think about Seuss! In this fantastical,
magical musical, some of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters are

Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and all of the Whos of
Whoville. These classic, colorful tales are brought together by Jojo,
a young "thinker of strange and wonderful thinks."
In an effort to allow everyone a chance to see this performance and
because of the popularity of the event, members may only buy the
first 4 tickets for $7 each. Every subsequent ticket will be $10.

Lion King
Cadillac Palace Theatre, Chicago
Wednesday, January 6, 2016
Noon—5:30pm
Disney presents a musical that brings the much-loved 1994 animated film to life to
breath-taking effects, spirit and power, inviting you to explore the African Serengeti and join the wide eyed cub
Simba on the adventure of a lifetime as he grows up and accepts his destiny as the King of the Pride Lands. In
addition to the beloved songs penned by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice (such as the soaring 'Circle of Life') this phenomenal adaptation
has new original songs and explodes with joyous, captivating music that soundtrack the rich mythology and moving drama expertly.
Since opening on Broadway in 1998, The Lion King has smashed records, evolving into the highest grossing show, playing to date,
6,700 performances and mounting new ones worldwide. The success is well deserved as the musical is a visually stunning affair, creating a realistic and thrilling landscape, with actors dressed as the wild animals and encompassing their characters in a spectacular,
goose bump-giving performance that keeps audiences coming back time and again.
A visual spectacle like this needs to be seen, and seen up close to be truly appreciated. That is why we have only purchased a limited
amount of tickets, but the tickets are extraordinary….orchestra seating in the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Because of the price of the
show and for these seats, we are offering a boxed lunch instead of dining out. Guests can choose whether or not to purchase the
lunch, which will be eaten on our way to the theater.
Fee: $100 members/ $120 guests…..$50 deposit due to hold your spot. (See October registration sheet)

The Swinging,
Controversial Life
of Frank Sinatra
Tuesday, December 8
11:30am-1:30pm
In this brand-new multimedia presentation we will trace the
biography of Sinatra’s improbable life. Starting with his odd
childhood as a skinny Italian street kid in working-class Hoboken, New Jersey. His father was a prizefighter turned saloon
keeper; his mother was a hard drinking suffragette and political
power in Hoboken who also made a living by performing abortions. We will look at Sinatra’s bumpy road to stardom. When
he avoided serving in World War II and musical tastes began to
shift, his career went into a steep decline that was only rescued
by the help of the Mafia and his amazing performance in the
movie “From Here To Eternity.” The rest of the story is equally
fascinating. Swingin’ Sinatra, the Rat Pack, JFK, Marilyn Monroe, and civil rights are part of the story. So are Lucky Luciano,
Sam Giancana, Skinny D’Amato, Jilly Rizzo and the Mafia.

Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago. Inspired by reading the book "To Sleep with the
Angels: The Story of A Fire", Jim learned that the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL had 25 graves where children of the fire were interred. His parents were interred there as well and he went to the memorial to pay his respects. At that point it was the 50th Anniversary of the
fire. He began researching the fire in depth and got into contact with
some of the survivors.
The Assassination of JFK
Tuesday, November 17
11:30am-1:00pm
“From Dallas Texas, official news flash: President Kennedy died at 1:00
p.m. central standard time, 2:00 eastern standard time some 38 minutes
ago.” These were the words that riveted America. As soon as they were
announced everything stopped. For the next four days the country was
plunged into total mourning.
Jim Gibbons will relook at this most tragic time in our nation’s history,
presenting “The Kennedy Assassination.” You may remember where you
were and what you were doing that fateful day in Dallas. You will learn
how everything came to a complete halt with just four words
“The President is dead!”
WWII

The summer months offered our patrons so many new
experiences. Between new devices to checkout, portable
DVD players to fishing poles and new skills to try in our
Forge, 3-D printing and Curiosity kits, it was fun and
exhilarating to witness patrons’ excitement over these new
opportunities. Were you among those who took a class in
the Forge or gazed at the stars in your backyard in one of
our Orion Star telescopes? If you haven’t been in the
library lately, it has changed! Come back this fall and
discover what makes your library a top destination for so
many reasons.
Perhaps the most frequent issue the Outreach
department responds to revolves around low vision.
Terms such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, diabetic
Retinopathy are all familiar to our Outreach staff and
probably to many of you. One important role of the
Outreach department is to help patrons with low vision
connect with the resources to help them continue their
activities of daily living. Because low vision issues are so
prevalent among older adults, Outreach Services and Ela
Township “55-Plus” are offering an educational program
on Low Vision Friday, November 6 10am-12:30pm at the
library. Registration and light refreshments will begin at
9:30am. On the agenda will be a local Optometrist
speaking on low vision evaluations, diagnosis and
treatment of various low vision issues, the Coordinator of
the Illinois Talking Book Center, a representative of the LZ
Lions Club as well as other presenters. In addition to this
program, the Lions Club International Vision Screening
bus will be parked in the library’s parking lot for the day to
provide free drop-in low vision screenings. Seating for the
Low Vision event is limited so please register through the
library after Sept. 1 by calling 847 438-3433.
Finally, take time to review the many programming
opportunities listed in the fall edition of the library’s
newsletter, Footnotes. From the Sweet Candy History of
Chicago on Oct. 22 to Old Time Radio performers on
Nov. 8, you’ll find an array of programs, classes and

which plan will be most cost effective
based on your specific medications.
We have been able to help people save
hundreds of dollars by switching plans.
