Im Botanischen Garten lässt es sich besonders schön
den Schlaf aus der Seele schütteln. Bei einem Spaziergang durch den Blumengarten, vorbei am schönen Teich und an tropischen Pflanzen aus aller Welt,
ist ausser den zwitschernden Vögeln und den zwei,
drei emsigen Gärtnern nichts zu hören. Im Tierpark
leben vom Aussterben bedrohte Arten, in den Volieren exotische Papageien und Sittiche. Beim kleineren Gewächshaus kann man auf einem Liegestuhl
oder direkt im Sand die Beine ausstrecken.
The Botanical Gardens are a particularly pleasant
place to “shake the sleep from the soul”. On a leis­urely
stroll through the floral garden, past the beautiful lake
and amid the tropical plants gathered from all the earth
over, the only sounds you’ll hear are the soothing birdsong and the occasional gardener going about his business. The zoo is home to a number of endangered species, while the aviary boasts parrots and further e­ xotic
residents. Outside the smaller greenhouse you can
even stretch out in a lounger or directly on the sand.

Das Livresse, eine Mischung aus alternativem Biocafé und Buchhandel, lockt seit
sechs Jahren Studenten, Lebenskünstler und
Geniesser an. Das Büchersortiment (unter
anderem auch sur place zu verschlingen)
deckt vordergründig feministische Themen
und Literatur zur gleichgeschlechtlichen
Liebe ab. Aber auch andere Geschmäcker
werden bedient. Gegen Durst gibt es Gazosas, frischen Tee und Kaffee, Weine aus der
Region und verschiedene Biere aus Belgien,
«weil das belgische Bier einfach das beste
ist», strahlt die Wirtin. Tapas, Sandwiches
und Salate stillen den Hunger.
A unique blend of bookshop and alternative
“green café”, Livresse has been attracting students, connoisseurs and simple lovers of life for
some six years now. The selection of books (onthe-spot consumption also permitted!) may be
weighted towards feminist issues and tales of
same-sex love; but other tastes are catered for,
too. Thirsts can be quenched with gassosas,
fresh teas and coffees, local wines or Belgian
beers. Belgian? “They just have the best beers!”
the hostess beams. And there are tapas, sandwiches and salads to keep the hunger at bay.

Im Hôtel d’Angleterre muss man nicht blaublütig

Manager Lionel Vuillemin schwört auf das Pouletsandwich. Das herrschaftliche Haus besticht
durch einen eklektischen Mix. Viktorianisch, alt,
modern, gemütlich, pompös – das Hôtel
d’Angleterre ist von all dem ein bisschen. Unbedingt mit leerem Magen hingehen!
You don’t have to be blue-blooded to feel royally
special at the Hôtel d’Angleterre. This fine establishment on the shore of Lake Geneva offers afternoon
tea and champagne, along – needless to say – with a
tasty selection of sandwiches (including gluten-free
versions), scones, macaroons and other delicacies
conjured up by chef de cuisine Philippe Audonnet
using his own secret recipes. Insider tip: Food & Beverage Manager Lionel Vuillemin swears by the chicken sandwich. It’s the eclectic mix that makes this
splendid place what it is. Victorian, old, modern,
cosy, showy: the Hôtel d’Angleterre is a little bit of
everything. Be sure to go there with a good appetite,
too!

Carouge
Es ist nur ein Stück Weg über eine Brücke – doch auf der anderen Seite scheint man in einer
fremden Welt gelandet zu sein. Das historische Städtchen Carouge entzückt nicht nur mit
seinen stillen Gässchen, neoklassizistischen Bauten, den vielen Galerien, Bäckereien,
anmutigen Boutiquen und Blumenläden, sondern vor allem auch mit der Gelassenheit
und Zufriedenheit der Bevölkerung. Pittoreske Ecken, von Blumen gesäumte Plätze
und ein Carillon, das aus sagenhaften 36 Glocken besteht (1926 wurde in der Kirche
von Carouge das erste Glockenspiel der Schweiz installiert), wollen einen gar nicht
mehr in die Grossstadt zurückgehen lassen. Nicht verpassen: den traditionellen
Mittwoch- und Samstagmorgenmarkt (neu auch am Donnerstagabend)!
It’s just a bridge away, but it’s an entirely different world. The historic village of
­Carouge is a delight – not just for its quiet lanes, its neoclassical buildings and its many
art galleries, patisseries, florists and boutiques, but also (and especially) for the calm
­contentment of the locals. With its picturesque nooks, its flower-lined squares and its
­carillon of no fewer than 36 bells (Carouge Church was the first in Switzerland to have a
glockenspiel installed, back in 1926), you may find it hard to return to the big-city bustle. The
traditional local market – held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and now additionally on
Thursday evenings – should also not be missed.

Bei Ploum stösst man auf Interieurschmuckstücke, die im Alltag nur schwer zu finden
sind. Tapeten, Kissen, Lampen und Türknäufe
in allen erdenklichen Farben, Mustern und
Variationen. Besitzerin Isabelle Halleux berät
ihre Kunden fantasievoll, charmant und mit
einer Freundlichkeit, wie sie für Carouge
­typisch ist. Auch Massanfertigungen bietet die
ursprüngliche Belgierin an. Ihre Produkte
stammen von nah und fern – hauptsächlich
aber aus Skandinavien.
Ploum is the place to go for the kind of elegant
items for the home that are hard to find elsewhere: wallpaper, cushions, lamps, doorknobs
and more in every colour, shape and size. Its
owner Isabelle Halleux assists and advises her
customers with oodles of ideas, and with the
light and friendly manner that is so typically
“Carougian”. A native of Belgium, she also offers
bespoke creations. Isabelle sources her products
from all over, though largely from Scandinavia.

Wer nach einem weiteren Grund sucht, Genf zu besuchen, setze sich –
auch wenn vorerst nur virtuell – auf die Terrasse des Kempinski und
­geniesse bei einem Pimm’s No. 1 (nicht günstig, aber lecker!) die unschlagbare Aussicht auf den Jet d’Eau, die Spitze des Mont-Blanc und
die Alpen. Neben drei Gourmetrestaurants, einer renommierten Bar,
dem bekannten Java Club, einem Fitnesscenter sowie 398 grosszügigen
­Zimmern und Suiten bietet das Hotel auch 14 Apartments für Langzeitaufenthalte. Im Grand Hotel ist durchaus vieles gigantisch – so zum
­Beispiel die Geneva Suite, mit ihren 1080 Quadratmetern die grösste in
ganz Europa. Das hauseigene Spa und der Innenpool sind unter der
­Woche bis 21 Uhr und an Wochenenden bis 20 Uhr auch für externe
­Gäste geöffnet.
If you’re looking for another reason to visit Geneva, seat yourself – virtually or otherwise – on the terrace of the Kempinski, sip your Pimm’s No. 1
(not cheap, but delicious) and drink in the unbeatable views of the Jet
d’Eau, the summit of Mont Blanc and the rest of the Alps. As well as its three
gourmet restaurants, its reputed bar, its famed Java Club, its fitness centre
and its 398 spacious rooms and suites, the place also offers 14 apartments
for longer-term guests. The Grand Hotel Kempinski lives up to its name in
other ways, too – with its Geneva Suite, for instance, the biggest in Europe
at 1,080 square metres. The spa and the indoor pool are also open to outside visitors, up until 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 8 p.m. at weekends.

respondances – as the name suggests – offers the ideal “connections” for young and
worldly-wise hipsters who want to cut a good figure wherever their travels may take
them. There’s a small women’s range, too, which is being steadily expanded.

Fast allen gemein ist der Heel. «Je höher
der Absatz, desto besser», ist Audrey, die
Tochter von Managerin Elodie Bernstein,
überzeugt. «Es war schon mein Kindheitstraum, einen eigenen Schuhladen zu betreiben.» Das tut sie nun zusammen mit
ihrer Mutter und ihrer Schwester Nadine
seit fünf Jahren. Die Passion ist spürbar,
das Sortiment verführerisch, die Liebe fürs
Detail in den Regalen sichtbar, diejenige
für den Schuh unersetzlich.
No, it’s not a typo: Notting Heel really exists. Drawing its inspiration from London’s
fashionable Notting Hill district, this delightful boutique offers the latest footwear
creations from Valentino, Chloé, Casadei
and more. What they all have in common is
the heel – “the higher the better,” says
Audrey, the daughter of manageress Elodie
Bernstein. “It was my childhood dream to
have my own shoe shop,” Audrey explains.
And now she has one, which she has been
running with her mother and her sister
­Nadine for the past five years. The passion is
palpable, the selection superb, the attention
to detail visible on the shelves, and the sheer
love of footwear unbeatable.

bar is a pulsating place of dance and sing, with live concerts from Tuesday to Saturday, too. Fresh and tasty
cocktails keep the energy levels up right through to the
early morning hours. Admission is free, though there is
a minimum consumption requirement of 30 francs.

Ein DJ sorgt für gute Stimmung, auf der Zunge tanzen Black-Tiger-Crevetten genüsslich mit Gemüse an rotem Curry und Sesam zu elektronischen
Beats. Im trendy Restaurant, dessen drei Terrassen sich immer wieder
in Konzertbühnen verwandeln, erlebt man ein Fest der Sinne. Auch
Fotografin Jennifer Ries ist begeistert: «Ich esse oft Ente, und diese
hier ist einfach perfekt!» Die Weine stammen zum grössten Teil aus
der Region. Manchmal findet sich das Beste wirklich ganz in der
Nähe.

the good vibe, while the black tiger prawns in red curry will dance on
your palate to the electro beats. This trendy restaurant, which regularly
turns its three terraces into concert stages, is a genuine feast of the senses.
Photographer Jennifer Ries is a particular fan. “I’m very partial to duck, and
the one they serve here is just perfect!” she enthuses. Most of the wines are
local, too. After all, the finest things in life are sometimes close to hand …

This architectural jewel in glass, embellished with mint green
and silver art deco chic, sits in one of the city’s finest parks that is
an open invitation to jog, picnic or simply lounge around. With its
charming interior, the restaurant makes it quite a choice whether
to sit inside or out. Especially as the terrace has its own delights,
too. This is a meeting place for everyone, from courting couples to
businessfolk: a place to enjoy an excellent salmon tartare; a place
to shoot the breeze with Urs Hänni, its friendly manager; a place
to do battle with the retired and the homeless on the giant outdoor chess boards next door. Everyone is welcome here. And the
Sunday brunch is highly recommended, too.

maison». Porzellanteller und Besteck liegen
zur Selbstbedienung parat. Die Getränke
werden zu fairen Preisen am Tisch serviert.
Eine grosse Portion Kitsch, Kindheitserinnerungen und Wohlfühlatmosphäre gibt es gratis dazu. Das Inventar ist ein nostalgischer
Mix aus verschiedenen Zeiten und «Universen» – dass dabei die Weihnachtsdeko hängengeblieben ist, stört gar nicht. Fast wie zu
Hause – nur charmanter!
“A slice of home-made apricot pie, a tea and
some home-made ice cream, please!” No: that’s
not how it works at Chez Quartier. “Comme à la
maison” is the motto here, and the cutlery and
the white crockery are all laid out for a self-­
service approach. The drinks are brought to the
table, and are reasonably priced. And the
kitsch, the childhood memory-joggers and the
general feel-good mood? They’re all free of
charge. The whole interior, in fact, is a nostalgic mix of different ages and different worlds.
So the fact that the Christmas decorations are
still up doesn’t matter a bit. It’s just like home.
But possibly more charming!
