Herr Sitz studied law in Heidelberg and joined the German Foreign Service in 1978. He was active in many parts of the world, notably in Paris. In July 2010, he assumed his current position in Vancouver as Consul General for all of Western Canada. Herr Sitz and his wife are most eager to learn as much as possible about Canada and are very interested in the German community of Victoria and its various organizations, in particular our Edelweiss Club. He and his staff will endeavor to support the club as much as possible. The above photo was taken after the brunch with those members of the Board who were present, (Mona, Uschi, Dieter, Monika and Rod). The Pessimist complains about the wind. The Optimist hopes the wind will change. The Realist sets sail—and lands at the Edelweiss Club. Dear Club Members: It gives me great pleasure to be the bearer of good news: we have weathered the storm. The Extraordinary Members’ Meeting, held on 16 June to deal with the crisis that had arisen, helped us to solve our immediate problems and fill all important executive positions DAS ECHO, from now on a quarterly publication (January, April, July, October), will be produced by Marlene Sand and me. The principal language of communication is English. We want to make sure that anyone interested in finding out what we are doing will have access to this information. Our new caretakers, Paul and Deborah Robinson, have impressed us with all they have done so far. We firmly believe that our premises are now in good hands. Paul and/or Deb will regularly report to, and receive instructions from, the Executive Board. We hope that this way we’ll manage without a Hausmeister, the only executive position we were unable to fill. The rental suite has been renovated completely by two ever-helpful club members. They donated over 400 hours of work, saving the Club a lot of money. On behalf of all club members: thank you! The suite will be rented out, as of 1 August 2013, to the caretakers’ two daughters, who have already assisted their parents in looking after our facility. We are confident that this rental arrangement will benefit us all. To refill our drained coffers, a caring club member, who wishes to remain anonymous, has surprised us with an interest-free loan of $10,000. On behalf of all club members I express to this generous person in our midst our sincere thanks. On June 15, the Club participated in the Sommerfest staged by the German Language School on the grounds of Goward House. Our traditional culinary offerings proved to be popular fare. Thanks are due to our crew of volunteers, and particularly to Mona who seized the opportunity to invite the Consul General and his wife to our Family Brunch the following day. Finally I wish to thank our previous President, Angela Williams, for her dedication, hard work and leadership during her time of service. I have accepted the challenging role of President in the reassuring knowledge that I can count on the support of a team of helpful colleagues. I wish you all a pleasant summer. Last year we treated ourselves to “The Sound of Music” and “Annie Get Your Gun” in Leavenworth. At Christmas we travelled to Chemainus to see the Christmas Show “Gifts of the Magi.” All of these excursions were tremendously enjoyable and rewarding. This year, another trip to Chemainus is planned for Sunday, December 1, to attend the hugely popular Christmas Show “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I have secured 40 tickets, 25 of which have already been spoken for. The price of $105 includes the bus ride there and back, a great Sunday Brunch, and premium seats for the musical show. All taxes and tips are included. I hope you can join us on this exquisite outing. Please phone me for more information and reservations. ALL USERS OF OUR CLUB HOUSE Please be advised of, and get used to, a new garbage disposal regulation that will become law in 2014: Kindly separate organic and paper waste, putting them into their designated boxes provided in each room. Jahrhunderts – in deutscher Sprache geschrieben waren. Auch seine Söhne und Enkel verfassten Rechenbücher, die den Namen Riese bis ins 18. Jahrhundert wirken ließen. Dieser Wirkungsgeschichte ist der redensartliche Gebrauch des Namens zu verdanken. Page 3 Das Echo July-Sept 2013 Harmony Choir Conversational German Submitted by Erika Waberski 250-652-0406 After our well-attended and successful Spring Concert on April 21, the Harmony Choir participated, on May 22, in an intercultural concert staged annually in the Jewish Congregation Temple Emanuel. It was wonderful to share the joy of music with so many different choirs and musical ensembles. We are now enjoying a well-deserved rest. On August 11 we'll have our summer picnic, and on September 12 our weekly practices will start again. Any new singers will be warmly welcomed. I wish you all a good summer. Submitted by John Fear 250-386-7282 Wednesday at 7:00pm in the Games Room Instructor: Susanne Garmsen M.A. For many years we have hosted a Conversational German Class. Sessions run from September until May of each year. Some years, when the need arises, we offer a class for beginners as well as one for more advanced speakers of German. The classes are intended to give people whose German is a little rusty a chance to brush up their conversing skills and socialize with others equally keen on communicating in German. Please phone me for more details. Victoria Accordion Club !! VOLUNTEERS !!
