Fasching
Fasching
(or
Karneval)
is
Germany’s
carnival
season.
Generally the festivities begin in the
week before Ash Wednesday and
end on Shrove Tuesday. It is a time
of wild merriment which includes
fancy dress parties, costume balls,
and parades.
On March 3rd, the children will celebrate Fasching by
making masks and dressing up. They will visit some of the
other classes and throw candies.
February Break
Because of the Canada Games, many schools in Nova
Scotia have a long February break this year. The GHLS
will also be on break at this time; therefore, there will be no
classes February 17 and February 24.
Kaffee und Kuchen
On March 17 the German Canadian Association will
sponsor a Kaffee und Kuchen afternoon at the GHLS. The
adult students will be taking part.
School Closures due to Weather
The general rule is: If the public schools are closed then
we are closed. You can determine the status of the public
schools by visiting the Halifax Regional School Board’s
website www.hrsb.ns.ca or by calling their information
number 464-4636. Unfortunately we are unable to post
closure notices on our website www.german-languageschool.ca If you are still unsure due to poor weather and
bad roads, you can call the GHLS number 425-7657.
Spring Term
The last day of classes for the Winter Term is April 7th.
The GHLS will offer a 7 class Spring Term, commencing
April 14th, provided that there is enough interest. Spring
Term courses require a minimum of 5 participants. Please
let your instructor know if you wish to continue your
studies.

Zur Fastnachtszeit
(August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1798-1874)
Und bringt der Winter auch manche Leiden,
So will er doch nicht traurig scheiden:
Er bringt uns erst noch die Fastnachtszeit
Mit aller ihrer Lustigkeit.
Da gibt es Kurzweil mancherlei,
Musik und Tanz und Mummerei,
Pfannkuchen, Brezel, Kuchen und Weck',
Und Eier und Würste, Schinken und Speck.
Wir Kinder singen von Haus zu Haus
Und bitten uns eine Gabe aus,
Und machen's hinterdrein wie die Alten
Und wollen heuer auch Fastnacht halten.
