The Prayer of St. Patrick - Oak Grove United Methodist Church
March 6, 2016 FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT In our worship today, we will use a portion of the prayer of St. Patrick. Ancient prayers often have disputed authorship, but this prayer is frequently attributed to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. This is an excerpt of the prayer. The Prayer of St. Patrick I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity... I arise today Through the strength of Christ's birth with His baptism, Through the strength of His crucifixion with His burial, Through the strength of His resurrection with His ascension, Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom. I arise today Through the strength of the love of cherubim, In the obedience of angels, In the service of archangels, In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward, In the prayers of patriarchs, In the predictions of prophets, In the preaching of apostles, In the faith of confessors... I arise today, through The strength of heaven, The light of the sun, The radiance of the moon, The splendor of fire, The speed of lightning, The swiftness of wind, The depth of the sea, The stability of the earth, The firmness of rock. I arise today, through God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's shield to protect me, God's host to save me From snares of devils, From temptation of vices, From everyone who shall wish me ill, afar and near. I summon today All these powers between me and those evils, Against every cruel and merciless power that may oppose my body and soul... So that there may come to me an abundance of reward. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity... 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP March 6, 2016 Gathering Music Welcome Fourth Sunday in Lent Bread of the World in Mercy Broken (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time.) *Hymn of Praise Gilbert M. Martin Dr. Glenn Ethridge Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty UMH 64 *Affirmation of Faith UMH 883 Rev. Susan Allen Grady We are not alone; we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. A Morning Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Allen Grady Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Our Tithes & Offerings (8:30) Jesus, Priceless Treasure Ms. Leanne Herrmann, Organ arr. Johann Gottfried Walther (11:00) How Excellent Is Thy Name Chancel Choir John Weatherford, Narrator Eugene Butler How excellent is Thy name, O mighty Lord! How excellent in all the earth. When I consider the heavens, the moon and the stars which Thou ordaineth, what is man that Thou are mindful of him, and the Son of man that Thou visitest him? Thou hast made man a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with honor and with glory. Thou hast given him dominion over the works of Thy hand. Thou hast put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen and the beast of the field, the fowl of the air and the fish of the sea. O Lord! Our Lord! How excellent is Thy name in all the earth! Alleluia! Amen! *Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. (Following the Doxology at 11:00, children in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade may leave for Children’s Church. Pick up is in room 206.) UMH 95 Scripture Mr. Carson Wiggins Chair of Invitation Ministry The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Sermon John 12: 1-8 Dr. Ethridge John: Sometimes Enough Is Not Enough Sacrament of Holy Communion A Service of Word and Table II UMH 12 The sacrament of communion is a sign and means of receiving God's grace. Therefore communion, like grace itself, is available to all people without regard to age, church membership status, relationship to Oak Grove, or denominational affiliation. The table belongs to God, so all are welcome. If you prefer gluten-free elements, please go to the station to the left of the pulpit. Once you receive the bread, please dip it in the grape juice in the chalice. After receiving communion you may kneel at the chancel to pray or return to your seat. Ministry of the Easter Lilies Fresh and fragrant Easter lilies will be part of the Easter decor on our campus again this year. The Altar Guild invites you to make a generous gift in honor or memory of someone dear to you. These contributions will be used for the floral arrangements on Easter Day as well as other seasonal decorations throughout the year. All contributors and their designees will be recognized in our bulletin on Easter Sunday. Some of the lilies will be delivered to our homebound members before Easter Sunday. Others will be available for you to enjoy at home. The Altar Guild is grateful for your support of this meaningful ministry. Please fill out the form below and place it in the offering plate or place your order by noon on Monday, March 21, at www.ogumc.org. Please use one form per person to be honored/memorialized.
