Pula Film Festival 09. - 23. 07.
For almost six decades, Pula has been the host of a grand film festival centred in the
majestic Arena, a Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century. In addition to the latest
films of Croatian production, you will also be able to watch hits from around the world in
this appealing movie theatre under the star-studded sky. This year’s festival will feature
20 films - some of the best achievements of international cinematography - taken from
the programmes of eminent world festivals held in Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Rome and
elsewhere. The films will be playing at Kaštel and at the Valli Cinema in the town centre
over a period of two weeks. The first film screening in the Arena was held on 18 June
1938, when La chaste Suzanne, directed by André Berthomieu, played before a packed
amphitheatre. On the eve of the screening, newspapers reported on the brilliant results
of technical testing, the huge screen and the extraordinary acoustics of the Arena. To
the delight of moviegoers, the evening show played until the end of August.
Filmfestival in Pula 09. - 23. 07.
Fast sechs Jahrzehnte lang findet sich in Pula das große Sommerfilmfestival in dem bekannten römischen Amphitheater - Arena aus dem ersten Jahrhundert statt. In diesem
attraktiven Kino unter den Sternen können sie die neuen kroatischen Filme ansehen,
aber auch die neuesten Welthits. Auf dieser Filmveranstaltung werden auch 20 Filme
aus den Programmen der etablierten Weltfilmfestivals vorgeführt - aus Venedig, Cannes,
Berlin, Roma und andere. Es geht um die besten Werke der Weltkinematografie, die
während zwei Wochen auf dem Kastell und in dem Kino Valli im Stadtzentrum vorgeführt
werden. Die erste Filmprojektion in Arena fand an dem 18. Juni 1938 statt. In dem vollen
Amphitheater wurde der französische Film La chaste Suzanne des Regisseurs Andre
Berthomieu vorgeführt. Die Zeitungen berichteten unmittelbar vor der Veranstaltung
über die brillanten Ergebnisse der technischen Kontrollen, großen Bildschirm und
ausgezeichnete Lautsprecherausstattung der Arena, und die Abendfilmrevue dauerte
auf die Begeisterung der Zuschauer bis Ende August.

The Hollywood crew headed by
Nicolas Cage could not remain
indifferent to the natural beauty of Kamenjak, a peninsula
and cape at the southern-most
point of Istria, choosing it as the
location for shooting the last
scenes of Season of the Witch.
This action adventure film appeared in cinemas earlier this
year. The story takes place in the
14th century. A heroic crusader
played by Nicolas Cage returns
from the war to find Europe in
the grips of the plague. He is
given the task of safeguarding a
young girl, whom church dignitaries consider to be a witch and

responsible for the plague. The
film was shot in February 2009
at Mala Kolombarica Cove, one
of many on Kamenjak peninsula.
The Istrian winter landscape is
said to have excellently evoked
the dramatic atmosphere of the
Middle Ages and witch-hunts.
Take some time to explore the
charms of the pristine Kamenjak
peninsula, six kilometres long and
about one kilometre wide. Here
you will find rocky beaches, small
islands, tree groves, crystal clean
sea and the preserved footprints
of dinosaurs. It is the habitat of
as many as 600 plant species,
including magnificent orchids.

die Naturschönheit von Kamenjak, der Halbinsel und dem Kap
auf dem äußersten Süd Istriens,
nicht gleichgültig geblieben
und hat es für die Aufnahme
von einzelnen Szenen aus dem
Abenteuerfilm Jagd auf Hexen
(Season of Witch) ausgewählt.
Der Film ist in Kinos Anfang
des Jahres erschienen. Die
Filmhandlung geschieht in
dem 14. Jahrhundert. Nicolas
Cage spielt den Kreuzritter,
der aus dem Krieg in das
verwüstete Europa kommt
und die Aufgabe bekommt,
ein Mädchen zu schützen,
das die Kirchenhäupter für
Hexe und Hauptschuldige
für die Epidemie halten. Der
Film wurde im Februar 2009
in der Bucht Mala Kolombarica, in einer der vielen
wunderschönen Buchten
auf Kamenjak, aufgenommen. Einige sagten, dass die
istrische Landschaft in dem
Wintergewand ausgezeichnet die dramatische Stimmung des Mittelalters und
der Hexenverfolgung darstellte. Erforschen sie selbst
die Zauber des unberührten
Kamenjak: diese Halbinsel ist
6 km lang und 1 km breit,
hat viele Steinstrände, kleine
Insel, Wäldchen, sauberstes
Meer und bewahrte Spuren
der Dinosaurier. Kamenjak
ist auch der Wohnplatz von
fast 600 Pflanzensorten,
zwischen denen auch Orchideen sind.

Film Red Tails shot in Istria
Only a few months after Nicolas Cage finished shooting
at Cape Kamenjak, Istria saw the arrival of yet another
Hollywood crew, headed by George Lucas, famous producer and director, and creator of the world popular
Star Wars and Indian Jones series. The crew and cast
had come to shoot “Red Tails”, based on the true story
of the first Afro-American aerial combat unit of the US
army. Chosen for filming were the picturesque towns
Grožnjan, Buje, Motovun and Draguć, located on the
green hills across northern Istria and providing splendid
views of the Istrian countryside. These old fortifications
with their preserved stone-flagged streets, authentic
facades, squares and churches were perfect for Lucas’
new film. All that was needed were a few signs, some
details and extras in costume to portray the spirit and
appearance of the towns of southern Italy in which
the film’s story takes place during the Second World
War. “Red Tails” was directed by Anthony Hemingway,
also the director of “CSI: NY”, while Cuba Gooding Jr.
was cast in the leading role. The film is coming soon to
theatres around the world.

Ein paar Monate nachdem Nicolas Cage auf Kamenjak
sein Film aufgenommen hat, ist in Istrien eine andere
Hollywood Clique mit dem weltbekannten Produzenten
und Regisseur George Lucas angekommen, der den
weltbekanten Film Krieg der Sterne (Star Wars) und
die Filmreihe über Indiana Jones aufgenommen hat.
Der Grund ihrer Ankunft war auch die Filmaufnahme
- es geht um den Film Rote Schweife (Red Tails), der
nach der Wahrheitsgeschichte über die erste Negerflugzeugmilitäreinheit in dem amerikanischen Militär
aufgenommen wurde. Für die Filmaufnahme wurden
die malerischen Städtchen Grožnjan, Buje, Motovun
und Draguć ausgewählt, die sich auf den grünen Hügeln in Nordistrien mit den ausgezeichneten Ausblicken auf das istrische Innenland befinden. Diese alten
Festungen mit den bewahrten gepflasterten Straßen,
interessanten Fassaden, Plätzen und Kirchen waren
wie geschaffen für den neuen Film von Lucas. Es sollten nur noch ein paar Schilder, Details, Statisten und
entsprechende Kostümen hinzugefügt werden, um die
entsprechende Stimmung und Aussehen der süditalienischen Städtchen vorzustellen, wo sich die Geschichte
des Films während des Zweiten Weltkriegs abwickelt.
Die Regie von Roten Schweifen unterzeichnet Anthony
Hemingway, der Regisseur von CSI New York, während
in der Hauptrolle Oskar-Gewinner Cuba Gooding Jr.
erscheint. Der Film sollte bald in Kinos weltweit vorgeführt werden.
Motovun
Film Festival (13.) 14.

Perched on top a steep hill overlooking river Mirna,
this quaint Istrian town tickles the imagination and
spreads good vibrations. Legend has it that it was
home to giants in the ancient past, while some believe that dragon lines, courses of the Earth’s positive
energy, cross in Motovun. In late July, its magic obtains yet another dimension: since 1999, it has been
the host of a film festival, which has gained European, and even world, fame. The festival’s five days and
nights teem with film screenings and events. Films
are shown in the open-air cinema Trg in the main
square, in Bauer, a ‘real’ cinema theatre also in the
main square, in the Barbacan cinema theatre at the
bottom of the town walls, and in the small theatre
next to the bell tower. The festival’s organisers have
seen to it that there will be clear skies! Because heavy rain threatened to flood everything on the fourth
day of last year’s 12th edition of the festival, the
organisers simply decided to skip number 13 and call
this year’s edition the 14th Motovun Film Festival!
Auf dem steilen Hügel über den Fluss Mirna gelegt,
regt das malerische Städtchen Motovon die Fantasie
an und verbreitet gute Vibration. Die Legenden sagen, dass in der Geschichte Motovun Riesen bewohnten, und einige glauben auch, dass sich in Motovun die Drachenlinien kreuzen, Läufe der positiven
Erdenenergie. Ende Juli bekommt sein Zauber noch
eine Dimension, weil von 1999 Motovun das Filmfestival gastiert, das heute europa- und weltweit bekannt ist. Fünf Festivaltage und Nächte sind voll von
Projektionen und Ereignissen. Die Filme werden in
dem offenen Kino „Platz“ auf Motovuner Hauptplatz
vorgeführt, dann in dem wirklichen Motovuner Kino
„Bauer“ auf dem gleichen Platz, in dem Kino „Barbacan“ unter den Stadtmauern, und noch in einem
kleineren Kino in der Nähe von Glockenturm. Für den
heiteren Himmel sorgen sich die Veranstalter. Einige
sagen, dass an dem vierten Tag des vorjährigen Festivals Regen mit der Überflutung drohte, weshalb
die Veranstalter dieses 13. Festival einfach als das
14. Festival verkündet haben.

History of Buzet

The area of Buzet has been inhabited since
ancient times. Proof of this are prehistoric remains of stone objects found in Golupska cave,
Podrebarska cave and some other caves. Illyrian
tribes inhabited these areas in the Bronze Age
when they began to build hilltop settlements
surrounded by walls. From AD 177 to AD 476
this area was under Roman rule.
At the time of the plague, Buzet escaped this
deadly disease, so that in AD 192 its inhabitants
put up a commemorative tablet dedicated to
goddess Augusta for having protected the town
Pinquentum (Buzet) from this disease. So, Buzet was mentioned more than 1800 years ago.
This period was followed by Byzantine rule and
after the great movement of the peoples came
the Croats and Slovenes. At the end of the 8th
century Istria was under the rule of the Franks
who introduced the feudal system. In order to
protect Frankish properties, towns-fortifications
were built, with German families as their feudal
lords. The remains of Črni Grad, Bijeli Grad above Ročko Polje, as well as Petrapilosa castle in
the valley of the Bračana river date from this
period.

Buzet und Umgebung ist eine von jeher besiedelte Gegend, was auch die vorhistorischen
Überreste von Steingegenständen in zahlreichen Schluchten und Höhlen bezeugen, wie
bspw. Golupska jama und Podrebarska špilja.
Die Illyrier begannen dieses Gebiet in der Bronzezeit der Vorgeschichte zu besiedeln, indem
sie an den höchsten Stellen der Hügel mit Mauern umzogene Siedlungen errichteten. In den
Jahren von 177 bis 476 herrschten im Buzeter
Gebiet die Römer. Da die Epidemie der Pest sie
umgangen hatte, errichteten die dankbaren
Buzeter im Jahr 192 v. Chr. der Göttin Augusta
eine Gedenktafel, wie sie, wie sie glaubten, die
Stadt Pinquentum bzw. Buzet von der Krankheit
verschont gehalten hatte. Bei dieser Gelegenheit
wird auch zum ersten Mal der Name der Stadt
Buzet erwähnt, also vor mehr als 1.800 Jahren.
Nach der Zeit der Römischen Herrschaft, wird
Buzet und Umgebung vom Byzantinischen Reich
eingenommen, bzw. nach der Völkerwanderung
ließen sich hier Kroaten und Slowenen nieder. Ende des 8. Jahrhunderts
herrschten in Istrien die Franken, die
das Feudalsystem einführten, StädteFestungen bauten, die heute unter
dem Namen Crni grad (Schwarze
Stadt) und Bijeli grad (Weiße Stadt)
oberhalb des Ročko polje bekannt
sind sowie das Kastell Petrapilos
im Flusstal von Bračana, und deren
Herrschaften Angehörige deutscher
Großgrundbesitzerfamilien waren.

Sammlung Brijuni
Parts of the rich finds from archaeological sites of Brijuni islands have
been on display since 1955 in the
Venetian summerhouse from the
16th century. The objects of material culture gathered throughout the
20th century depict the life of the
inhabitants of the archipelago from
prehistory to the Middle Ages. The
prehistoric period is represented by
the finds of terracotta, bones and flint
from the semi-dugout settlement in
Javorika Bay and the Bronze Age settlement atop Gradina hill. The glory of
the classical times is represented by
ceramic, glass, metal and stone finds
from the sumptuous early imperial
residential villa at Verige Bay that
stretched 1 km along the seaside.
Late Antiquity is represented by finds from the castrum, the most multistrata Brijuni settlement, that was at
the time surrounded by impressive
walls somewhat greater than one
hectare.
Ein Teil der reichhaltigen Funde aus
den archäologischen Lokalitäten Brionis, wurden ab dem Jahr 1955 in der
venezianischen Sommerresidenz aus
dem XVI. Jh. ausgestellt. Mit Hilfe der im Laufe des gesamten
XX. Jahrhunderts gesammelten
Gegenständen einer materiellen
Kultur, wird das Leben der Inselbewohner von der Urgeschichte
bis zum Mittelalter aufgezeigt.
Die prähistorische Zeit wird
durch Funde aus Terrakotta,
Knochen und Feuersteinen aus
der zur Hälfte aus Lehmhütten bestandenen Siedlung in
der Bucht Javorika, sowie aus
der Siedlung des Bronzezeitalters auf dem Berg Gradina
präsentiert. Den Glanz der Antike bieten die Keramik-, Glas-,
Metall- und Steinfunde aus den
prunkvollen frühkaiserlichen
Sommerresidenzen bzw. Villen
in der Bucht Verige dar, die sich
einen Kilometer entlang der
Küste erstreckte. Die herrliche
Antike ist durch Funde aus dem
Castrum vertreten, einer auf
den Brioni durch die meisten
Schichten charakterisierten Siedlung, die zu jener Zeit von einem eindrucksvollen Schutzwall
in einer Fläche von etwas mehr
als einem Hektar umgeben war.

Owing to its geographical position, the proximity of
sea and fertile land with Mediterranean field crops,
Fažana was an important economic centre during
the Roman civilization; in those times, Fažana was
under the administration of the Roman colony Pula.
The area of Fažana comprises Runci cove in the
south, the coastal area of Peroj in the north and
fertile land with olive groves and vineyards in the
hinterland. In Roman times, Fažana was the centre
of olive oil production on the entire Istrian coast.
The proximity of sea, enabling fishing, and the protected harbour where Roman merchant ships could
berth made it an ideal place to live, work and rest.
The area of Fažana, like entire Istria, came under
the Roman rule in 177 BC, when the Romans conquered the main Histrian town of Nesactium-Vizače.
However, it was not until the mid-1st century AD
that a more intensive settling or Romanization of
the Istrian peninsula began.
Fažana war wegen seiner natürlichen geographischen Lage, der Nähe des Meeres und der fruchtbaren Felder mit mediterranen Kulturen ein wichtiges
wirtschaftliches Zentrum der römischen Zivilisation,
dessen Raum sich in der Antike unter dem verwaltungsspolitischen Zentrum der römischen Kolonie
Pula (Pola) befand. Der Raum von Fažana umfasste
die Bucht von Runci im Süden, das Küstengebiet

von Peroj im Norden und im Hinterland fruchtbare Felder mit Oliven und Weingärten. Gerade im
Zusammenhang mit der Erzeugung des Olivenöls
nimmt Fažana einen besonderen Platz an der istrischen Küste in der Zeit der römischen Herrschaft
ein. Die Nähe zum Meer (also die Möglichkeit der
Fischfangs) und der Schutz im römischen kleinen
Hafens, in dem römische Handelsschiffe anlegen
konnten, bestimmte diesen bevorzugten Ort zum
Leben, für die Arbeit und zur Erholung. Das Gebiet
von Fažana wie auch ganz Istrien kommen im Jahr
177 vor Christus unter die Herrschaft Roms, als die
Römer die histrische Hauptstadt Nesactium-Visače
errobern. Aber erst ab der Mitte des 1. Jahrhunderts
nach Christus beginnt eine intensive Besiedelung
bzw. eine Romanisierung der Bevölkerung der istrischen Halbinsel.

Die unterirdischen Tunnels - Schutzräume
On the eve of the Great War, Pula was an important military and strategic centre of tremendous
importance for the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as
its principal naval port and its fleet anchorage; the
city was therefore fortified with a complex system
of manned fortification constructions that extended
from the east to the west coast of Istria barring all
accesses to the city. In addition to the city’s civilian population a large number of soldiers and highly
skilled professionals in all sorts of fields working for
the navy and the naval arsenal lived in Pula and so
the Austro-Hungarian authorities, immediately prior
to the First World War and during the War, began
the construction of an underground tunnel system
with communication passageways under the city’s
hills to shelter the city’s population and to serve
as ammunition stores. Not a single hill in the inner
city was spared from drilling and digging! A widely
spread network of underground tunnels/shelters was
created. Under the central city hill Kaštel, there are
two shelter tunnels, one is directly underneath the
fort located on the top of the hill, and the second
one is at the foot of the hill. This tunnel is about 400
metres long and its entrance is next to Dvojna Vrata
(Twin Gate). It was recently opened to the public and
tours for the first time.
Pula war als Hauptkriegshafen und Anlegestelle der
Flotte vor Beginn des 1. Weltkrieges ein wichtiges militärisches und strategisches Zentrum von außergewöhnlich staatstragender Bedeutung für die damalige Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie; deswegen
wird ein weitläufiges Befestigungssystem mit Besatzung und Verteidigung errichtet, das sich von der
West- bis zur Ostküste Istrien erstreckte und so die
Zugänge zur Stadt absicherte. In der Stadt selbst liegt
neben der Zivilbevölkerung auch eine große Zahl von
Soldaten und Experten verschiedener Richtungen,
die für den Bedarf des Militärs und des Arsenals
arbeiteten. Die österreichisch-ungarische Verwaltung begann unmittelbar vor dem 1. Weltkrieg und
während seiner Dauer zum Schutz für Menschen
im Fall direkter Luftangriffe auf die Stadt mit dem
Ausbau eines unterirdischen Tunnelsystems- mit
Schutzräumen mit Munitionslagern und Verbindungsgängen unterhalb der Erhebungen von Pula einzurichten. Kein Hügel von Pula im engsten Stadtkern
wurde vor Bohrungen und Grabungen verschont!
Dazu wurde ein weit verzweigtes Netz von unterirdischen Tunnels - Schutzräumen - geschaffen. Unter
dem zentralen Stadthügel, Kastell, befinden sich zwei
Tunnel-Schutz-Räume: einer unter der Festung, die
sich am Gipfel des Hügels befindet und der zweite
am Fuße des Hügels. Vor kurzem wurde gerade dieser ca. 400 Meter lange Tunnel, mit Eingang neben
der Doppeltür zum ersten Mal für die Öffentlichkeit
und den Rundgang zugänglich gemacht.

Festival will gather some of the
greatest names of the world jazz
scene and give both domestic
and international audience the
pleasure of listening to music at
prestigious locations in Rovinj.
In July, the audience can expect three great jazz concerts.
The first will be held on 1 July in
hotel Monte Mulini by the New
Gary Burton Quartet led by Gary
Burton, the musician who has introduced the style of four-mallet
technique in vibraphone playing
and popularised duet format in
jazz. A week after the New Gary
Burton Quartet, on 8 July, one of
the most famous pop and R&B
singers, a top jazz guitarist and
multiple Grammy winner, George
Benson will give a concert in the
ex Tobacco factory. Return to Forever IV, the leading group of the
1970’s jazz fusion movement led

class. It is confirmed by the Awards of Excellence that the Umag tournament has obtained
from the ATP on several occasions. Spain’s
legendary opera diva Montserrat Caballé is
going to make the opening of the 22nd ATP
Studena Croatia Open an even grander occasion by performing at the Stella Maris stadium
on July 23. With that, the Umag tournament
will confirm its status of the central social
event this summer in Croatia. With more than
70 000 visitors of the ATP tournament, Umag
invariably becomes a summer center of tennis, beauty and entertainment, as well as the
tastes and smells of Istria. During her long
and impressive career Montserrat Caballé has
sung in over eighty opera roles, from baroque
opera to Verdi, Wagner, Puccini and Strauss. La
Superba - as Montserrat Caballé is known will perform in Umag as part of the ATP Umag
Party Nights Program, which will last from July
21 until July 31.

In the Vrsar harbour there is an interesting medieval
monument: the Romanesque basilica of St. Mary of
the Sea. The basilica itself is an exceptional monument of the Romanesque architecture in Istria. Its
history is long and curious. In Roman times some
large structure, possibly a country house with farm
buildings, was standing on the place of today’s
church. The original and modest St. Mary was built on that very spot in the second half of the 8th
century. Its present-day architectural appearance
dates back to the 12th century, and the traces of
reconstructions can still be seen on the walls. In
recent years, the church was renovated on several
ocasions, last time in 1969. The facade is rather
plain, with a round window (oculus) on it. On the
east side there is a simple belfry formed like a Romanesque monofora, with a little bell dating from
1922. The semidark interior is very impressive. It
is divided into three naves by heavy Romanesque
arches and monolithic round columns; as such, the
church is a perfect setting for the musical stunts of
guitar virtuosos.

Im Hafen von Vrsar befindet sich ein sehr interessantes mittelalterliches Denkmal: die romanische
Basilika der hl. Maria von der See. Die Basilika stellt
ein sehr wichtiges Denkmal der romanischen Architektur in Istrien dar. Die Geschichte der Basilika ist
lang und interessant. Anstelle der Basilika war in der
römischen Zeit ein grösseres Gebäude (vielleicht
eine villa rustica - ein Landhaus mit Hof). Im frühen
Mittelalter stand an dieser Stelle ein bescheidenes
Kirchlein der hl. Maria, erbaut in der zweiten Hälfte
des 8. Jhs. Sein heutiges architektonisch-künstlerisches Aussehen stammt aus dem 12. Jh. An den
Wänden sind Reste des Umbaus noch sichtbar. In
der neueren Zeit erlebte die Kirche mehrere Restaurierungen (die letzte im Jahr 1969). Die Fassade der
Basilika ist einfach. Auf der Fassade ist ein rundes
Fenster (oculus). Auf der Ostseite der Kirche ist ein
einfacher Glockenturm in Form einer romanischen
Monofore. Im Turm ist eine kleine Glocke aus dem
Jahre 1922. Das halbdunkle Innere der Basilika wirkt
suggestiv. Schwere romanische Arkaden mit runden
Monolithsäulen teilen die Kirche in drei Schiffe und
bieten im Sommer eine perfekte Kulisse für musikalische Kunststücke der Gitarrenvirtuosen.

be greatly enriched by the Basilica
itself, a precious monument inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage
List. Euphrasian Basilica is only the
central part of a larger complex
formed by a number of buildings
constructed mostly at the same
time. One such larger edifice is the
Bishopric, which has retained its
original appearance only in parts.
It is located to the north west of
the Basilica, and is linked with its
narthex by a narrow corridor. It
was a single storey construction
with a simple, rectangular ground
plan and a great apse. The fine
central hall on the first floor, the
salutatorium or segretarium, had
a tribelon (entrance) in front of the
apse, preserved only in fragments
(a column with a capital and arches
with remains of stucco and marble
decoration) and was used for the
bishop’s non-liturgical reception of
both clerics and laity.

sich um einmal errichtetes Bauwerk mit einfachem rechteckigem
Grundriss und einer großen Apsis.

The parade of Istrian oxen is the most entertaining part of St. Jacob’s Day in Kanfanar.
The long tradition of celebrating St. Jacob’s
Day begins with a rare parade of oxen, accompanied by a brass band and majorettes.
Some of the oxen draw old farm waggons,
carrying folk singers and dancers, wine barrels and ploughs. The nostalgic scene of past
times and customs passes through Kanfanar
to the site where the cattle are weighed, with
the heaviest animal winning first prize. An
ox-ploughing competition takes places on a
nearby field for the best score in obedience.
The merry parade then heads back to the fairgrounds, where a jury examines each head
of cattle in the beauty category. Finally, winners in all three categories are announced.
Adding to the fun of the parade, folk music
and dance are a variety of daylong activities,
such as bicycling, a bocce ball tournament, a
clay pigeon shooting contest and a selection
of gastronomic specialties.
Die Schau der istrischen Ochsen ist der attraktivste Teil des Jakovlje (St. Jakobsfest) in
Kanfanar. Die lange Tradition zur Feier des Hl.
Jakobs beginnt mit einem nicht alltäglichen
Festumzug von Ochsen, die von Blaskapellen
und Majoretten begleitet werden. Im Festumzug sind mehrere Rinder in alten Dorfkarren eingespannt, auf denen sich singende
Folkloregruppen, Weinfässer und Pfluggeräte
befinden. Dieser nostalgische Anblick einstiger Zeiten und Traditionen zieht durch ganz
Kanfanar, bis zu der Stelle, an dem die Rinder
gewogen und das schwerste Rind verkündet wird. Der nahe gelegene Acker wird zum
Wettbewerbsort der Ochsen im Pflügen und
der gehorsamste Ochse erhält die Bestnote. Der singende Festumzug kehrt daraufhin
wieder zum Marktplatz zurück, wo jedes Rind
wird von einer Jury auch in der Kategorie
Schönheit bewertet und der Gesamtsieger
in allen drei Kategorien verkündet. Der Festumzug, der Tanz und die Folklore werden
zusätzlich von einem ganztägiges Programm,
einem Radrennen, Boccia-Turnier und Tontaubenschießen sowie gastronomischen
Spezialitäten ergänzt.

households had a well in their
yard or stable, which was used
as a large rainwater reservoir.
Wells, cisterns or reservoirs represented a fountain of life and
were a symbol of both the poverty and the wealth of Istrian
families. In numerous squares
in Istrian towns, they boasted
of the skills of outstanding bu-
ilders. Svetvinčenat in central
Istria guards one the loveliest
and best-preserved public wells
in Istria. Built in 1808, the well is
today an important monument
of architecture. Istrian wells can

erhaltenen öffentlichen Steinbrunnen in Istrien aus dem Jahr
1808, der heute ein bedeutendes
Baudenkmal ist. Sie werden sie
aufgrund des markanten architektonischen Stils erkennen. Sie

mih (bagpipe), šurla (clarinet-like
instrument) and two-part singing

Lady of Lourdes. The celebration
begins in the early morning with
a variety of sports competitions

evenings under the open sky, luring people to enjoy song, dance
and entertainment until the small
hours.

in den frühen Morgenstunden

Long ago on Christmas Eve of
1721, a miraculous event took
place at the village of Sv. Petar
u Šumi, when the Paulist monk
Pavao Subski spotted tears on
the face of Our Lady of Chenstohova on the high-altar painting of
the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul.
Our Lady shed four tears. One
tear fell from her forehead to her
lips, while the other three appeared under her eye and slid down
to her nose. The Paulist monks
living at the monastery, together
with a multitude of worshippers,
rushed to the church to witness
this extraordinary event. At the
mass celebrating the New Year
1722, the first eyewitness, Father
Pavao, dried the tears from Our
Lady’s face with a handkerchief.
From then on until the Paulist
monks left Sv. Petar u Šumi in
1783, people made pilgrimages
to the miraculous painting of Our
Lady of Chenstohova. The entire
event was recorded and preserved in the bishop’s archives in
Poreč thanks to Gaspar de Nigris,
Bishop of Poreč, who transcribed,
from a memorial book, the nu-
merous prayers granted by Our
Lady of Chenstohova, usually involving the miraculous recoveries
of many villagers.

Muttergottes herab. Eine der Tränen floss von der Mitte der Stirn
bis zu den Lippen und die drei

Paulinerkloster damals bewohnt
hatten und eine Vielzahl von
Gläubigen aus der Umgebung
eilten gleich in die Kirche um
dieses große Ereignis zu bezeugen. Bei der Eucharistiefeier an

Paul mit einem Altartuch die Tränen vom Gesicht der Muttergottes gewischt. Von da an bis zum
Wegzug der Pauliner aus Sv. Petar u Šumi im Jahr 1783 pilgerten
viele Menschenmengen zum Bild
der wundertätigen Muttergottes
von Tschenstochau. Das gesamte
Ereignis wurde dokumentiert und
im Bischofsarchiv der Diözese in
Poreč aufbewahrt. Dies geschah
dank Bischof Gaspar de Nigris,
der originalgetreu aus der Denkschrift zahlreiche Muttergottes
Erhörungen, meist Wunderheilungen zahlreicher Einheimischer
überschrieben hatte.

won a gold medal at the Wine Exhibition in Brussels
back in 1935. If its charm was truly enjoyed at the
court of the emperor Franz Joseph in Vienna and
the King Emanuel III in Rome, why wouldn’t you do
that...? You can try the emperor’s muscat from the
Momjan area at the manifestation to its honour at a
beautiful location near the mediaeval Momjan castle. While tasting the muscat of Momjan, where the
wine is offered to the guests by the MUSCATeers
dressed in MUSCATeer’s uniforms, one may see a
special programme with the historic presentation
of Momjan and its surroundings.

On their way from the Italian regions to Istria, names and shapes
of pasta gradually changed until
they became uniquely Istrian.
Lovers of Italian pasta would be
surprised at what Istrians call lasagna: it is not large flat noodles
with layers of sauce and cheese,
but any dish that uses the flat
noodle. Their simple form makes
them ideal for many dishes, including a lithesome nest for white
truffles. Besides the large lasagna, there are also thin lasagna
for soups and the slightly larger
ones for maneštra. The most
common pasta during Lent were
the pasutice or posutice in which
the dough is cut in cubes, cooked
and tossed with warm olive oil
and salted sardines or salt cod.
Makaruni, žbirići or pljukanci,
spindle-shaped pasta, are gaining
popularity and the most popular
by far are fuži - tubes of thin pasta 3 to 5 centimeters long.

fishermen connoisseurs, who
devoted their whole lives to sea.
In Vabriga fish was salted in two
specific ways: in souse and with
common salting. The sause is the
way that requires water and coarse sea salt. Anchovies are placed in wooden round dishes, the
sause is poured over and all is
covered with a heavy cover. Fish
mustn’t be left without water,
so it needs to be added subsequently. The other way of salting
is with the common salt, where
the array of anchovies is placed
closely and lavishly sprinkled
with salt. The procedure is repeated until the top of the dish is
reached, and every subsequent
array is placed in the opposite
direction. The fish is salted, i.e.
saused in May and should be left
to stand still for 30 to 90 days,
so the Vabriga Festival is the ideal place where you can try the
ready-made anchovy in typical

Die Sardellen werden dabei in
runden hölzernen Gefäßen geschichtet, mit Salzlake übergossen und mit einem schweren Deckel verschlossen. Die Sardellen
dürfen dabei nicht ohne Wasser
sein, so dass sie nachträglich immer wieder gewässert werden.
Die zweite Art des Einsalzens erfolgt nur mit Salz, wobei die Sardellen dicht aneinander geordnet
und großzügig mit Salz bestreut
werden. Das Verfahren wird bis
zum oberen Rand des Gefäßes
wiederholt, wobei jede Lage in
entgegengesetzte Richtung geschichtet wird. Die Sardellen
werden bereits im Monat Mai
gesalzen, beziehungsweise in
Salzlake eingelegt. Nach 3090 Tagen ist die Reifung durch
das Einsalzen abgeschlossen,
so dass das Fest in Vabriga der
ideale Ort ist, wo Sie die fertigen,
salzigen Sardellen in typisch istrischer Umgebung kosten können.

An event dedicated to astronomy and astrology, mysticism and mythology. This is an astroparty with content and symbolism based on
the ancient Celtic culture which is still a part
of today’s civilization. That is how the event
got its name: ancient Celtic people named
Lunasa after the first day of summer (1st August), celebrating life and wealth of nature. Lunasa brings a scent of mysticism and mythology, which are an important part of history of
Celtic people. During the event, the old town
lighting system will be off; more will be going
on in the park by the church close to the seaside, in a romantic, mystical atmosphere. Various workshops will take place, stars will be
watched with a telescope, under the guidance of professional astronomers, and different
stands will offer hand made souvenirs, jewellery, traditional food and music entertainment.
The whole event is accompanied by different
types of music, starting from ambient, new
age and classical music, live music or DJ sets.
On both the evenings, interesting space and
stellar photo projections will be presented
along the bell tower.
Veranstaltung im Zeichen der Astronomie &
Astrologie, Mystik & Mythologie. Es ist eine
sozusagen Astroparty, die das alte keltische
Kultur als Thema benützt. Den Namen kommt davon, weil dieses Volk das erste Sommertag (1. August) genau ‘Lunasa’ nannte;
dieser Tag wurde die Natur und das Leben
gefeiert. Deswegen bringt Lunasa einen mystischen und mythologischen Hauch dieses
Volk mit. Während des Festivals werden die
Stadtlichter ausgeschaltet - die Altstadt Novigrads wird desto romantisch und mystisch.
In dem Episkopat Park am Meer kann man
an vielen Workshops teilnehmen, wie z.B. die
Sterne beobachten, thematische Vorlesungen,
Schmuckausstellung. Verschiedene Musikarten wie ‘ambiental’ oder ‘new age’ werden
spielen live oder als DJ Set. Beide Abende
wird man die Möglichkeit bekommen, die
Photographien von Himmelskörper an dem
Stadtturm zu beobachten.

The abstract metal sculptures of Dušan Džamonja (1928
- 2009), a sculptor of international fame and paramount
creative achievements, made his name in world art history. He was launched onto the international scene in 1960
at the Venetian Biennale. Since then, famous museums
and galleries - the Tate Gallery and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum to name just a few - in Rome, Berlin, Paris,
London, New York and other major cities have acquired
his sculptures. This most recent exhibition, held in Funtana, is a great opportunity to admire the work of Dušan
Džamonja, one of Europe’s greatest sculptores of the
second half of the 20th century.
Der Bildhauer von internationalem Ruf und höchster kreativer Reichweite, Dušan Džamonja (1928 bis 2009) schrieb
sich mit seinen abstrakten Skulpturen aus Metall in die
internationale Kunstgeschichte ein. Der internationale
Durchbruch gelang ihm im Jahr 1960 auf der Biennale in
Venedig. Seitdem werden seine Werke von berühmten
Museen und Galerien in Rom, Berlin, Paris, London, New

Some 20 minutes’ drive north of Rovinj lays a flooded canyon valley - Lim Channel, also known as Lim
Bay and 120 m above the sea is Romuald’s Cave
where, according to legend, St. Romuald used to
live in the 11th century as a hermit, praying and
meditating. This 105-metre-long cave consists of
several impressive halls that bear evidence of
continuous life in this area since prehistoric times
(the oldest remains of prehistoric people in Istria).
A colony of greater mouse-eared bats, an endangered and protected species, lives in the cave. The
entrance to the cave is only 47 cm high, but the
main hall reaches a height of 5-6 m. This cave is
considered a unique phenomenon because stalactites and stalagmites are located only on its left side;

ununterbrochene Besiedlung dieser Gegend schon
seit der Urgeschichte darstellen (die ältesten Reste
des Urmenschen in Istrien). In der Höhle lebt eine
Kolonie der Großen Mausohren, einer gefährdeten
und unter Schutz stehenden Fledermausart. Der
Eintritt in die Höhle ist nur 47 Zentimeter hoch, und
die Haupthalle ist 5-6 m hoch. Die Höhle ist ein
Phänomen: die Tropfsteine sind nur auf der linken
Seite vorzufinden und die rechte Höhlenseite ist

all times. The Optimist is the ideal
boat for boys and girls under 14
years of age. Its shape, equipment and characteristics are a
guarantee of safety - the Optimist is unsinkable! Everything your
child needs is a swimming costume, a comfortable shirt with
long sleeves, shorts and a pair
of trainers which can be worn in

water. Of course, don’t forget a
cap and sunscreen, as well as a
string to secure the glasses for
those children who wear them.
Life jackets are provided by the
sailing club. The course is held
Monday to Friday, from 9am to
12pm. The maximum number of
attendants is 6 per group.

Hose und Badeschuhe, bzw. ein
Schuhwerk, das nass werden darf.
Vergessen darf man die Mütze
und ein Sonnenschutzmittel, natürlich, auf keinen Fall, und für
Brillenträger ein Sicherungsband.
Rettungswesten werden von der
Segelschule gestellt. Der Kurs findet von Montag bis Freitag jeweils

The novelty of four tall standing poles at Glavani, only four
kilometres from Barban and ten from Vodnjan, is sure to attract your attention. This theme park is one of Croatia’s largest
adrenalin parks. Its experienced staff will teach you how to
wear and use your harness and how to operate the carabiners
and rollers. With their help, you first have to complete the
two-metre high yellow course, then the six-metre high blue
course, and finally the ten-metre high black course. To boost
your adrenalin level even higher, both the blue and the black
course end in a 113-metre zip-line taking you from the first to
the last platform. The park’s 19-metre high polls and platforms
are connected by nets and cables. Excellent fun for the whole
family awaits you at Glavani, as well as an opportunity to test
your boundaries!
Bereits die vier hochoben erhobenen Balken in der Ortschaft
Glavani, nur 4 km von Barban und 10 km von Vodnjana, werden Sie durch ihre Eigentümlichkeit anlocken. Dieser Themenpark ist einer der größten Adrenalinparks in Kroatien.
Die erfahrenen Mitarbeiter werden Ihnen beibringen, wie die
Ausrüstung getragen und wie diese verwendet wird und auch
wie man Karabiner und Roller verwendet. Zuerst müssen Sie
mit Unterstützung die 2-Meter hohe gelbe Route bewältigen,
daraufhin die blaue 6-Meter hohe Route und am Ende sollten
Sie die schwarze, bis zu 10 Meter hohe Route bestehen. Als
weiteren Adrenalinstoss, wurde der blauen und schwarzen
Strecke ein überaus langer Drahtabhang hinzugefügt, der sich
von der ersten bis zur letzten Plattform auf einer Länge von
sogar 113 Metern erstreckt. Im Park befinden sich 19 Meter hohe Balken und Plattformen, die durch Netze und Seile
verbunden sind. Der Abenteuerpark Glavani ist ein großer
Spaß für die ganze Familie und bietet Ihnen auch noch die
Möglichkeit eigene Grenzen zu überwinden!
