Pope Visited Vrsar

From the 10th till the 18th century Vrsar was the adminnistrative centre of the county of the Poreč Bishops. In fact,
the Poreč Bishops were ruling on behalf of the Roman popes who used to confirm their rights from time to time. In
the year 1177 the pope Alexander III (1159 - 1181) visited
Vrsar and, according to tradition and to some documents,
stayed here for three days. By a special decree the pope
confirmed the right of the Poreč Bishops during the Middle
Ages. The territory of West Istria was the place where the
economic and political interests of the Venetians and Aquileian patriarchs clashed. Both authorities tried in vain to
capture Vrsar from the Poreč Bishops. In this long struggle
the Poreč Bishops were cunning and stubborn, so they managed to retain Vrsar under their rule almost eight centuries
long. At the end of the 13th century the struggle for the
western Istrian coast ended in favour of Venice. In 1267
Poreč acepted protection of the Venetian doge and thus
Vrsar, being in the Poreč territory was supposed to come
under the rule ofVenice too. Despite political changes, Vrsar
remained under the authorities of the Poreč bishopric and
was exempt from paying taxes either to Venetian doges or
to the Aquileian Patriarchate.
Der Papst hat Vrsar besucht
In der Zeitspanne von 10. bis 18. Jahrhundert war Vrsar
administratives Zentrum der Grafschaft der Bischöfe von
Poreč. In Wirklichkeit herrschten die Bischöfe von Poreč
über Vrsar im Auftrag der römischen Päpste, die den Bischöfen von Zeit zu Zeit ihre Rechte bestätigten. Im Jahre 1177
besuchte der Papst Alexander der III (1159-1181) Vrsar auf
seiner Reise von Venedig nach Ancona und ist hier drei Tage
geblieben/der Legende zufolge und manchen Dokumenten
nach. Der Papst bestätigte dabei in einer besonderen Urkunde die Rechte des Bistums von Poreč auf Vrsar, das im
Mittelalter eine Sommerresidenz der Bischöfe war. In der
Region des Westistriens kreuzten sich die wirtschaftlichpolitischen Interessen Venedigs und der Patriarchen aus
Aquilea aufeinander. Venedig und Aquilea haben vergebens
danach getrachtet, den Bischöfen von Poreč Vrsar zu entreissen. Der Schlauheit und der Dickköpfigkeit der Bischöfe
von Poreč in diesem Kampf war zu verdanken, dass Vrsar
acht Jahrhunderte in der Obhut des Bistums von Poreč bleiben konnte. Der Kampf um die Westküste Istriens endete in
der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts zugunsten Venedigs.
Im Jahre 1267 stellte sich Poreč unter der Obhut des Dogens
von Venedig und so sollte auch Vrsar, das sich auf dem Gebiet Porečs befand, unter die Obhut der Republik Venedig
kommen. Das war aber nicht der Fall. Trotz vielen politischen
Veränderungen blieb Vrsar im Besitz des Bistums von Poreč
und musste keine Steuer weder an die Republik Venedig
noch an Patriarchen aus Aquilea entrichten.

Lovers of historical anecdotes will
be thrilled by the remains of a rustic
villa from the period of Roman rule
which is located close to Lorun hill,
in the Lunga Bay, on the northern
side of Červar Port, close to Poreč.
The large complex has not been
completely researched and was
active for six centuries creating amphorae for wine and oil transport in
other ceramic pots. For some time,
its owner was the controversial Calvia Crispinilla, Emperor Nero’s lover
and pleasure teacher at his court,
who scientists believe had Istrian
origins. The remains of the villa are
located off the main traffic routes
and for this reason it is the best to
visit them by bike and get ready for
a breath of adventure along these
unpaved paths. The understanding
of Lorun will be made easier by the
new informative tables with designs
of the, already familiar, data about
the complex as well as of the international team of researchers that
have been working here since the
mid 1990s.
Liebhaber historischer Pikanterien werden die Überreste der Rustika Villa aus
der römischen Zeit neben dem Hügelchen Lorun in der Bucht Lunga nördlich
von Červar Port neben Poreč faszinieren. Der große Komplex ist noch nicht
zur Gänze erforscht. Er war über sechs
Jahrhunderte aktiv, indem er Amphoren für den Transport von Wein und Öl,
sowie andere Keramiken hergestellt
hat. Eine Zeit lang war die kontroverse
Calvia Crispinilla Eigentümerin, Liebhaberin des Kaisers Neron und Lehrmeisterin der Wollust auf seinem Hofe, von
welcher Wissenschaftler glauben, dass
sie istrischer Herkunft war. Überreste
der Villa befinden sich außerhalb der
Hauptverkehrsstraßen und daher ist
es am Besten diese mit dem Fahrrad
zu besichtigen, sowie sich für einen
Hauch von Abenteuer entlang der nicht
asphaltierten Wege vorzubereiten. Das
Zurechtfinden in Lorun werden Ihnen
neue informative Tafeln mit Skizzen
der derzeit bekannten Daten über den
Komplex, sowie über das internationale
Wissenschaftlerteam, welches dieses
seit Mitte 1990 erforscht, erleichtern.

Umag
Over the past few months Umag
has been the centre of important
archaeological excavations which
have completed the present
knowledge about its brusque
past. If you would like to visit
the place where this important
knowledge regarding the history
of the most western city in Croatia appeared, walk to St. Martin’s
Square located in the northern
part of Umag peninsula. At the
Umag City Museum foundations,
remains of the wall that once
protected the city have been revealed. It is supposed that the,
60 cm thick and 8 m long wall
that came to light dates back to
10th century and traces a point

that was the continuation of the
still well preserved walls of the
southern part of the peninsula.
But, that’s not all - research has
proved that St. Martin’s Church
once existed on that same square. The valuable remains of frescoes which once adorned its
apse dating back to 11th century
were also revealed. The museum
is currently closed for restoration, but it is worth visiting from
outside as well, as it is located in
the 14th century defence tower,
which is the oldest conserved
building in Umag.

Vergangenheit Umag
In den vergangenen Monaten
war Umag Schauplatz wichtiger
archäologischer Ausgrabungen,
welche das bisherige Wissen
über dessen stürmische Vergangenheit vervollständigt haben.
Dort wurden in den Fundamenten des Gebäudes des Museums
der Stadt Umag Überreste des
Bollwerks entdeckt, welches einst
die Stadt geschützt hat. Man nimmt an, dass das Mauerwerk, 60
cm dick und 8 m lang, aus dem
10. Jh. datiert und Spuren deuten
darauf hin, dass es sich an das
noch immer gut erhaltene Bollwerk auf der südlichen Seite der
Halbinsel anknüpfte. Aber das ist
nicht alles - Forschungen haben
bestätigt, dass am selben Platz
einst die Kirche des Hl. Martin bestand und es wurden wertvolle
Überreste von Fresken, ebenfalls
aus dem 11. Jahrhundert, gefunden, welche einst deren Apsis
The traveller-researcher’s imagination will surely be stimulated
by the remains of a centuriation, a specific method of spatial
planning which dates back to the
period of the Roman Empire. Although almost two millenniums
have passed since then, the traces of dividing up the countryside into regular square blocks are
noticeable even today in the Funtana area - not only on cadastral
and topographic maps, but in its
very landscape as well. You will
notice them in the form of dry
stone walls and paths that still
spread around the Funtana area
in directions set by calculations
carried out during the Roman
period. Its main element was the
centuria, a square of 2,400 feet
(710m) on a side which was then
divided into a hundred smaller
squares of 240 feet (71m). The
smaller square was known as
heredium. The remains of centuriation are best seen from the
air, so if you have a chance to try
a panoramic flight from the nearby aerodrome, do not hesitate
to do so.

Die Phantasie der ReisendenForscher wird sicherlich auch
durch die Überreste der Landvermessung (centuriation), einer
spezifischen Methode der Raumplanung, welche aus der Zeit
des Römischen Reichs datiert,
angeregt. Obwohl seitdem fast
zwei Jahrtausende vergangen
sind, sind die Spuren der Teilung
des wirtschaftlichen Grundstücks
auf gleichmäßige Teile auch
heute noch in der Umgebung
von Funtana ersichtlich - nicht
nur auf Katasterplänen und topographischen Karten, sondern
auch in der Landschaft selbst.
Sie werden diese als Trockenbauten und Pfade bemerken,
welche sich hier und da in der
Umgebung von Funtana noch
immer in Richtungen erstrecken,
welche die Messungen aus der
römischen Zeit vorgegeben haben. Deren Grundelement war
die Zenturie, das Seitenquadrat
von 2 400 Fuß (710 M) = (710 m),
welches weiter auf hundert kleine Seitenquadrate von 240 Fuß
(71 M) = (71 m) geteilt wurde. Ein
kleineres Quadrat wurde Heredium genannt. Die Überreste der
Centuriation-Landvermessung
sind am Besten aus der Luft erkennbar. Also zögern Sie nicht,

Did you know that Pula was once the main war port of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire? At that time, more than 100 vessels were anchored in its harbour, while some 50 mighty
forts and over 300 artillery positions provided protection to
the town. Come and explore this part of Pula’s turbulent
history by taking a guided tour in an army truck. Lasting
3.5 hours, the tour includes army lunch served in authentic
soldiers’ mess gear. Starting from the Karolina car park, the
tour takes you to Fort Grosso in Štinjan, which affords a
stunning view of Pula’s bay and from which you can see
the site where the SMS Viribus Unitis sank. After a 10-minute
walk through a pine forest, you will arrive at the Valmaggiore stronghold built in 1886. Another 5-minute walk will
take you to Zonki Cove and the Zonki stronghold that was
instrumental in sinking the French submarine Curie. Here
you will learn how the submarine was salvaged and rebuilt,
and became a part of the Austro-Hungarian fleet as U-14.
You will also learn about its commander, Georg von Trapp,
whose character appears in the movie ‘The Sound of Music’. The next stop, by truck, is Punta Cristo, the largest and
strongest K.u.K. (Imperial and Royal) artillery fort constructed
between 1836 and 1914.
Wussten Sie, dass Pula der wichtigste Kriegshafen in der
Österreich- Ungarischen Monarchie war? Zu dieser Zeit lagen im Hafen mehr als 100 Schiffe vor Anker und die Stadt
wurde von fünfzig mächtigen Festungen und von über 300
verschiedenen Artillerie-Stellungen bewacht. Einen Teil der
stürmischen Stadtgeschichte können Sie bei einer Fahrt in
dem Militär-Lkw in Begleitung eines Reiseführers erkunden.
Beim 3,5 sündigen Ausflug erwartet Sie ein militärisches
Mittagessen, eine Maneštra (Eintopf) in original militärischen
Portionen. Der Weg führt Sie von der Karolina bis zur Festung
Grosso in Štinjan, von wo Sie eine wunderschöne Aussicht
auf die Bucht von Pula genießen können und man sieht
auch den Ort an dem das Schiff SMS Viribus Unitis gesunken ist. Nach einem zehnminütigen Spaziergang durch den
Pinienwald gelangen Sie zur Küstenfestung Valmaggiore
aus dem Jahr 1886. Nach der Besichtigung läuft man noch
etwa fünf Minuten bis zur Bucht Zonki und der gleichnamigen Festung, die an der Versenkung des französischen
U-Boots Curie beteiligt war. Sie werden die Geschichte des
U-Boots erfahren, das nach der Reparatur in die ÖsterreichUngarische Kriegsflotte als U-14 eingereiht wurde und vom
Kapitän Georg von Trapp, über den der Film ‘The Sound of
Music’ gedreht wurde. Dann fahren Sie weiter zur größten
und mächtigsten k.u.k Festung der Festungsartillerie Punta
Cristo, die in den Jahren zwischen 1836 und 1914 gebaut
wurde. Erleben Sie dieses echte Abenteuer und entdecken
Sie das unbekannte Pula. Geschlossene Schuhe und casual

St. Catherine’s Island, Rovinj
During the 19th century, the island of St. Catherine was in the hands of the Austrian archduke Karl Stephan
who bought it for 516 kg of silver and later sold it, for 2333 kg of the precious metal, to the Polish count
Ignaz Karol Von Korwin Milewski. At the beginning of the 20th century, Milewski built a summer retreat on
the island which was subsequently restored and upgraded several times, the last time in 2000. The count
was considered a somewhat odd and eccentric person, but he systematically afforested it, paved the trails,
docks and built an elegant mansion. After his death, and thanks to the political turmoil, the island passed
through the hands of several owners before finally coming under the control of the city of Rovinj after
the end of the Second World War. One of the special features of the island is the beautiful view it offers
to it’s visitors of the old parts of the city of Rovinj. And that’s just one of the many features and benefits
which, in the past, were available only to the European aristocracy to enjoy, and now it’s within reach to
every genuine lover of natural and historic sights.
Insel Hl. Katarina, Rovinj
Die Insel Hl. Katarina war gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Eigentum des österreichischen Erzherzogs
Karl Stephan, welcher diese für 516 Kilogramm Silber gekauft und danach für 2.333 Kilogramm dieses
edlen Metalls an den polnischen Graf Ignaz Karol von Korwin Milewski verkauft hat. Milewski hat Anfang
des 20. Jahrhunderts auf der Insel ein Sommerhaus erbaut, welches danach mehrmals um- und angebaut
wurde, und dies zum letzten Mal im Jahr 2000. Milewski war ein Eigenbrötler und Exzentriker, aber er
hat systematisch die Insel Hl. Katarina bewaldet, alle Pfade und zugänglichen Molen bepflastert, sowie
ein feudales Schloss erbaut. Nach seinem Tod und turbulenten historischen Wallungen hat die Insel noch
einige Male den Eigentümer gewechselt, um mit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs Rovinj zuzufallen. Eine der
Besonderheiten der Insel Hl. Katarina ist, dass sie einen wunderschönen Blick auf den alten Teil dieser
Stadt bietet. Und dies ist nur eine der Segnungen, welche einst die europäische Aristokratie und heute
alle wahren Liebhaber der Natur und historischer Sehenswürdigkeiten genießen.

Ethnographic Museum of Istria

The Castle of Pazin is a medieval fort, located
above an abyss called Pazin pit. The castle is
shaped as an irregular parallelogram that surrounds the inside courtyard. Since 1962 the
castle has been the site of the Ethnographic
Museum of Istria, containing 4200 ethnographic
artefacts of textile, agricultural tools and items
that were used in the everyday life of Istrian villages around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. These include pottery,
carpentry, blacksmith items and traditional handicrafts. There is also a large collection of souvenirs and, on the ground floor of the castle, the
carpenter and blacksmith workshop. Here you
can see different tools, blacksmith furnace and
other items typical of the craft. The permanent
exhibition offers a look at the traditional clothes
from across Istria. You can also see traditional
kitchen with fireplace, furniture and dishes and
items of traditional farming with agricultural tools, especially those used in the production of
wine and oil in Istria.

Das Kastell in Pazin ist eine mittelalterliche Festung, die sich über dem Karstschlund, genannt die Pazin-Höhle, befindet. Es hat die Form
einer rundum geschlossenen mittelalterlichen
Festung mit Ecktürmen und einem großen Innenhof. Von 1962 befindet sich hier das Ethnographische Museum. Das Museum hütet eine
reiche ethnographische Sammlung von über
4200 Gegenständen, in erster Linie Textilwaren,
landwirtschaftliches Werkzeug, Gegenstände
aus dem alltäglichen Leben des istrische Dorfes
vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und vom Beginn
des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das sind (Töpferwaren,
Schreinerwaren, Schmiedwaren und Muster
der traditionellen Handarbeit). Das Museum
hat auch eine größere Souvenirsammlung. Im
Erdgeschoß des Kastells befinden sich die Schmied- und Schreinerwerkstatt. In der Schmiedewerkstatt kann man den Schmiedeofen so wie
verschiedenes Werkzeug und Gegenstände, die
der Schmied herstellte, sich ansehen.

Famed for its crystal-clear sea the Fažana Channel
connects Fažana and Brijuni. Here on the terra firma the fishing tradition was mentioned as early as
the Middle Ages and has remained a well-known
theme up to the present day. Fishing boats, dinghies and batane rocking gently along the two
wharfs in Fažana; boats leaving port in the evening
with their fishing lights and the morning activities
at the waterfront. Fishing is part of the family bond:
even today you can see the diligent women from
Fažana as they clean and mend fishing nets after
the fishermen return from sea. Pilchard, anchovy,
mackerel... This is the most frequently caught fish
in Fažana’s fishing nets! But, fish from Fažana was
exported as well. The regular boat service between
Pula and Trieste also included Fažana as its port
of call, so fish as well as lobsters and crabs “grancevole” could be taken from Fažana to be served
at banquets in Trieste and Vienna. Within the pro-
gram of the Fishing academy Pilchard, an especially
interesting event is the Fažana school of salting
pilchard!
Bekannt für sein klares Wasser, verbindet der Kanal

Hier auf dem Festland wird schon im Mittelalter
die Tradition des Fischfangs erwähnt, der durch
Jahrhunderte auch unsere Zeit bestimmt. An den
beiden Molen von Fažana schaukeln kleine Fischerboote und Barken, Pasare und Batanas, im
überschaubaren Hafen; während des Fischfangs
am Abend und des morgenlichen Stimmengewirrs
an der Riva. Der Fischfang ist ein Teil der familiären Wechselbeziehung: auch heute kann man die

An der Schiffslinie Pula - Triest legten die Schiffe in
Fažana an und lieferten Fisch wie auch Hummer
und Krebse für den Bedarf von Triest und die Tische
in Wien. Im April ist im Rahmen des Programms
der Fischerakademie der Sardelle besonders die
Fažanaer Schule des Einlegens dieses blauen Fisches interessant.

Regenbogen Grimalda, 17.04.
The meeting of popular and traditional Istrian instruments in Grimalda is known under the regional
dialect name as Supci pud mavricun which means
players under the rainbow. The performance brings
together around a hundred musicians under thirty
from the whole of Istria who, by playing, are able
to preserve the original traditional Istrian music.
The walk through Grimalda will be enriched by the
sounds of music as well as by the important photographic exhibition organized by Young People’s
Association for this cheerful gathering.

mavricun bekannt, was in der Übersetzung die

place, the Boljun fireplace, where eminent Istrian
poets will take part. The entire night is followed by
fitting music that will evoke typical traditional Istrian

The annual reunion of mouth organ players takes
place in Gračišće, a small town in central Istria. On
the first reunion held in 1996 only twenty players
took part. Its greatness and importance have been
growing from year to year. Today it has been approved by thousands of players who have presented
their skills here and have lovingly passed them on
to their descendants who by playing delight their
elders. The mouth organ has become a symbol of
Gračišće, and it is worth visiting, hearing and letting
yourself go to the unusual sounds of tradition.
Das Festival der Mundharmonikaspieler findet jedes
Jahr in Gračišće, der kleinen Stadt in Mittelistrien,
statt. Im Jahr 1996 fand das erste Festival statt, an
dem nur zwanzig Mundharmonikaspieler teilnahmen. Seine Bedeutung wächst von Jahr zu Jahr und
ist heute durch Tausende von Spielern bestätigt,
die ihr musikalisches Talent mit Liebe an ihren Nachwuchs übertragen, und mit ihrer Musik auch die
Alten immer wieder begeistern. Organići (kleine
Mundharmonika) sind zum Kennzeichen der Stadt
Gračišće geworden, und es lohnt sich, Gračišće zu
besuchen und sich den außergewöhnlichen Klängen der Tradition zu überlassen.

sides that are rounded and widened towards the
top that narrows in a small vertical neck. Pots were
made of two types of earth- darker clay and white
earth from the valley of the River Mirna. Earth was
shaped by hand, squeezed and dampened with
wet leather. Pots were then baked in a built stone
stove. Finished pots were loaded in baskets carried
by donkeys and taken to Vlašija in the Poreč area
where they were sold.
Einen bedeutenden Platz unter den Handwerksberufen nahm die Töpferei ein, eines der ältesten
Formen istrischer Handarbeit. Im Gebiet von Buje,
der Bujština, wurde in den Ortschaften Zubini und
Pavletići das Töpferhandwerk betrieben. Tontöpfe
haben einen breiten Boden, von dem aus die Außenseiten rund geformt und zur Spitze hin verbreitert werden, woraufhin sie sich in einem niedrigen
schmalen vertikalen Hals verengen. Das Geschirr
wurde aus zwei Tonarten gefertigt, der dunkleren
Tonerde und der weißen Erde aus dem Flusstal der
Mirna. Die Tonerde wurde mit den Händen geformt,
gedrückt und mit nassem Leder feucht gehalten.
Die hergestellten Gefäße wurden in einem gemauerten Steinofen gebrannt. Danach verlud man die
fertigen Gefäße in Körbe auf einen Esel, und mit
dem Esel ging es bis nach Vlašije, im Gebiet vom
Poreč, wo sie verkauft wurden.

The sounds of the popular triestina, a small button accordion, will turn the town of Roč into an
outdoor stage. This is the holiday when lovers of
traditional Istrian music meet in Roč at the familiar
and distinguished International Meeting of Diatonic
Accordion Players. Numerous performers will play
accordions, violins, bass violins and clarinets at
this meeting of diatonic accordions where visitors
can hear the sounds of instruments of more than
a hundred years old. The organiser of the event
has taken care in his choice of rich wines that will
help to create a pleasant group in an even more
pleasant atmosphere.
Die Klänge der bekannten Triestina, kleine Akkorden mit Knöpfen, werden Roč in eine Freilichtbühne verwandeln. Es ist ein Feiertag, wenn sich die
Liebhaber der istrianischen Traditionsmusik auf
dem anerkannten und erkennbaren internationalen Treffen der Musikspieler der diatonischen
Harmoniken in Roč treffen. Zahlreiche Musiker

Flowers and pastries are the symbols of celebration
in honour of Ottava, so every spring the village of
Fiorini becomes an ideal weekend destination for
all those wanting to relax and have fun. The traditional three-day celebration starts with the Briscola and Tresette tournament, the most well-known
Istrian card game followed by a flower fair and a
full day’s entertainment and sports programme.
Blumen und Kuchen sind das Kennzeichen des Festes zu Ehren Ottava, und so werden Fiorini jeden
Frühling die ideale Destination für das Wochenende

traditionelle dreitägige Fest beginnt mit dem Turnier in Briscola und Tressette, dem bekanntesten
istrianischen Kartenspiel, dem die Blumenmesse

The traditional Istrian garden is

a small garden located in the leeward direction
of a traditional Istrian house, hidden from attacks
of strong wind and strong sun. The garden had
to be fenced off with a stone wall, which was
built high on the northern part to protect it from
attacks from the bura wind whilst the walls on
the southern side were lower, but high enough
to let the sun get through to it whilst leaving
domestic animals out of it. Entrance is provided
through an opening in the wall closed by a wooden gate. The land was cultivated, watered and
weeded manually; people seeded and planted
everything necessary for cooking and preparing
food. Amongst the vegetables most often cultivated were salad, radicchio, beans, green peas,
cabbage and string beans whilst amongst the
culinary herbs there were sage, mint, wormwood, rosemary, basil, laurel and parsley as well
as the inescapable spices fennel, cumin, horseradish and celery. Special charm is given to the
garden by the fully blossoming fruit-trees - fig,
quince, apple, and pear.

Windschlägen und starker Sonne. Der Garten wurde
unbedingt durch eine Steinwand eingezäunt, auf der
nördlichen Seite zum Schutz vor den Windschlägen
der bura hoch erhoben, während auf der südlichen
Seite die Wände niedriger, aber dennoch hoch genug waren, damit der Garten gleichzeitig besonnt
und dennoch vor heimischen Tieren geschützt wurde. Man gelangte durch eine Öffnung in der Wand,
verschlossen durch eine hölzerne Tür, in ihn hinein.
Die Erde wurde manuell bearbeitet, gegossen und
gejätet. Es wurde alles gesät und gepflanzt was zum
Kochen und Zubereiten von Speisen benötigt wurde.
Vom Gemüse am häufigsten Salat, Blaukraut, Bohnen, Erbsen, Kohl und Fissolen, von Gewürzpflanzen
Salbei, Minze, Edelraute, Rosmarin, Basilikum, Lorbeer und Petersilie, aber auch die unumgänglichen
Gewürze Fenchel, Kümmel, Kren und Sellerie. Dem
Garten verleihen die Obstbäume in ihrer vollen Blüte
einen besonderen Zauber - die Feige, die Quitte, der
Apfel, die Birne.

The richness of simple
cuisine

The tumultuous past times considerably impacted the gastronomy
as well. Various traditions are interlaced in the traditional cuisine,
which founds its fundaments in
the nature (self-propagating plants,
aromatic condiments, seasonal vegetables, sea fruits…), and influences of Franc and German feudal
authorities as well as the Roman
food and that of the Slavic populations which arrival started in the
7th century, were imported. Differently from the coastal villages,
the inner land of Istria was not so
developed, neither gastronomically
speaking various. Mostly populated by agricultural population, that
part of Istria was distinguished by
famine rather than by wellbeing.
On his own land, the peasant
produced just the indispensable,
and prepared the food out of the
available, considering that he hasn’t got enough resources to buy
it. The bread was baked with the
maize flour mixed with the barley
flour or with another cereal. It was
baked once or at the most twice
a week in a baker’s oven or in the
open fire-place - under the baking lid (čripnja). The white bread
was eaten very rarely, mostly for
Easter or in case of disease. The
same was with the meat. The one
quarter soup (a quarter of kilo of
chicken meat) or the soup made
by browning flour on lard with
added water with sheep or cow’s
cheese grated over, were prepared
to the non serious convalescents.
The most common dishes were:
porridge (maize or barley grits)
with milk, sugar or wine; maneštra
(thick soup with stewed potatoes,
barley and bean) and potatoes
baked in their jackets. Better food was consumed
during church holidays and in times of hard fieldworks. Ravioli (dumplings made of pastry filled with
cheese) and njoki poured over by the sauce made
of poultry, were regularly prepared for Christmas
and Easter. Fuži (thin pastry cut in cubes and folded
over) were also poured over by the poultry sauce
and brought to the mowers in the field.
Istrische Gastronomie:
Vom Reichtum der einfachen Kochkunst
Die ereignisreiche istrianische Vergangenheit hinterließ ihre Spuren auch auf diesem Gebiet. Verschiedene traditionelle Gerichte vermischten sich
mit der volkstümlichen Küche, deren Zutaten, wie
Wildgräser, Gewürzkräuter, Saisongemüse oder Meeresfrüchte, aus der umgebenden Landschaft kamen. Auch die fränkischen und deutschen Feudalherren brachten ihre Essgewohnheiten mit. Dazu
kam auch die Küche der alten Römer sowie die
slawische, die schon seit dem VII. Jh. mit dem Einfall slawischer Bevölkerungsgruppen ihren Einfluss
ausübte. Im Unterscheid zu den Küstenstädten war
das istrische Hinterland nicht so hoch entwickelt
und auch die Gastronomie war nicht so vielseitig.
Die Region war hauptsächlich von Bauern bewohnt
und es herrschte eher Armut. Der Bauer baute nur
für den Eigenbedarf an. Die Speisen wurden aus
den zur Verfügung stehenden Erzeugnissen zubereitet, da man ja kein Geld hatte, um sich etwas
anderes zu kaufen. Das Brot wurde aus einem
Gemisch von Mais- und Gerstenmehl oder auch
aus anderem Getreide nur einmal oder höchstens
zweimal pro Woche im Holzofen mit offenem Kamin
oder unter der Tonglocke gebacken. Weißbrot gab
es nur sehr selten, meistens nur zu Ostern oder
wenn jemand krank war. Dasselbe galt auch für
Fleisch. Wenn jemand erkrankte, bereitete man als
Stärkung ‚Juhu od kvartina’ zu (Suppe aus 1/4 kg
Hühnerfleisch) oder Einbrennsuppe (aus Mehl und
Wasser) mit geriebenem Schafskäse oder Quark.
Die landläufigen Gerichte waren: Skrob (Brei aus
Mais oder Gerste) mit Milch, Zucker oder Wein;
Maneštra (Eintopf aus Kartoffeln, Gerste und Bohnen) und Pellkartoffeln. Besonders reichhaltige Gerichte wurden an kirchlichen Feiertagen zubereitet
oder an Tagen in denen außergewöhnlich schwere
Feldarbeit geleistet wurde. An Weihnachten und
Ostern gab es gewöhnlich ravioli (Teignudeln mit
Käsefüllung) und Nockerl mit Geflügelragout. Mit
Geflügelragout aß man auch Fuži (dünner Teig, quadratisch geschnitten und gerollt), die den Mähern
aufs Feld gebracht wurde.

Istrische Weinszene in Frühling
The best known Istrian spoon meal ‘maneštra’ is
deeply rooted in the region’s culinary traditions. A
deceivingly plain and simple dish, maneštra is indeed a creative and healthful food. Only now when
vegetables are recognized for their high nutritional
value is maneštra getting the credit it deserves and the simple dish we have been a little ashamed
of has found its place on the menus of many fine
restaurants. The basis of Istrian maneštra is boiled
potatoes and beans to which seasonal vegetables
are added that give it a distinct name: maneštra
od bobići (young corn), od jačmika (barley), od
slanca (chickpea), od koromača (fennel), etcetera.
When pickled cabbage (sauerkraut) or sour turnip
is added, it becomes a typical winter dish ‘jota’. A
unique characteristic of Istrian maneštras is ‘pešt’
(pesto). Pešt is made by mashing together chopped
bacon, garlic and parsley to form a paste. It is added to the soup at the very beginning so the bacon
is well cooked. Istrian maneštra was also precisely
defined by the type of pork that was added. The
most common and appreciated addition was the
dry ham bone.
Das wohl berühmteste Istrianische Gericht ‘auf
dem Löffel’, Maneštra, ist tief in der kulinarischen
Tradition Istriens verwurzelt. Die Basis jeder Istrianischen Maneštra machen gekochte Kartoffeln und
Bohnen aus, welchen, außer getrocknetem Fleisch,
auch Gemüse der Saison hinzugegeben werden. Je
nach Gemüse wird die Maneštra benannt: Maneštra
mit ‘bobići’ (junger Mais), mit ‘jačmik’ (Gerste), mit
‘slanac’ (Kichererbse), mit Fenchel, usw. Wenn bei
der Zubereitung der Maneštra Sauerkraut oder eingemachte Rüben verwendet werden, dann spricht
man von ‘Jota’ - einem typischen Wintergericht.
Eine Besonderheit der Istrianischen Maneštra ist die
Verwendung von ‘Pesto’ zur Würzung des Gerichts.
Zur Zubereitung des ‘Pešt’, also des Pesto, werden
Speck, Knoblauch und Petersilienblätter gemeinsam zur breiigen Masse gekocht. Diese wird der
Maneštra beim Beginn der Zubereitung hinzugefügt
um den Speck gut weichzukochen. Eine weitere
Charakteristik der Istrianischen Maneštra war die
Kenntnis welches getrocknete Fleisch (vorwiegend
Schweinefleisch) in welche Maneštra gehörte.
Spring on the Peninsula abounds in wine events
- Easter Monday thus brings the Central Istrian
wines fair, taking place in Gračišće, an old little town on top of a hill near Pazin. Gračišće
offers a spectacular view of the countryside,
and has become famous for its unique wine
festivity that appeals to thousands of visitors
from throughout Croatia. On that special day,
wines of Central Istria are offered in 15 old
taverns of Gračišće; among the plentiful offer,
the most prominent are the indigenous Istrian
varieties Istrian malvasia and Teran. The urban
structure of Gračišće makes excellent scenery
for the celebration, which reminds of a true
medieval fair - old taverns and crowded ancient
streets are just some parts of the old ways of
living evoked during the festival. Soon after
that, Poreč will host the prestigious Vinistra,
a modern three-day wine exhibition gathering
the best vintners of the region and beyond.
Finally, don’t miss the Day of open wine cellars, scheduled for the last Sunday in May. It
is another great way of exploring Istria and its
vibrant world of excellent wines.

bringt die bekannte Weinmesse des inneren Teil Istriens

Bald nach dem Weinfest in Gračišće beginnt die bekannte Weinmanifestation Vinistra in Poreč, moderne
Weinausstellung, die in drei Tagen die besten Weinproduzenten aus Istrien und der Umgebung sammelt.
Zuletzt, verpassen sie den Tag der offenen Türen von
Weinkellern am letzten Maisonntag nicht. Das ist der
beste Anlass für einen Ausflug durch die Halbinsel, und
die reiche istrische Weinszene kennenzulernen.

Istrian winemakers in the prestigious guide
Vinibuoni d’Italia 2011
The Touring Club Italiano, publisher specialized in eno-gastronomical guides
and magazines, for the first time this year has presented Istria by dedicating
it as much as the front cover page of its wine guide. The chapter dedicated to
Istria finds itself side by side to renowned Italian wine regions, with a detailed
description of its touristic offer and the long enological tradition, as well as of
each of the 16 included istrian vintners. Among the 16 istrian vintners, three
of them, namely Coronica, Veralda and Vivoda have been awarded with the
second prize, while other three have won the most prestigious prize called
‘’Corona’’. They are: Franc Arman for his Malvasia 2009, Giorgio Clai for the
Prosecco 2007, and Benvenuti for his Muscat from Momjan 2007.

dem besonderen Akzent schon auf der Titelseite des Führers. Somit wurde
Istrien neben zahlreichen renommierten italienischen Weinregien auch ein
besonderer Kapitel gewidmet mit einer genauen Zusammenfassung des istrischen touristischen Angebots, Weinanbaugeschichte in Istrien und jedes von
16 in den Katalog eingetragenen Winzer. Von den 16 eingetragenen istrischen
Winzer erhielten drei den 2. Preis und zwar: Coronica, Veralda und Vivoda,
und die angesehensten Preise ‘’Corona’’ erhielten Franc Arman für Malvazija
2009, Giorgio Clai für Refošk 2007, und Benvenuti für Momjanski muškat 2007.

oil from the area of Buje as well as
the oil produced by the Belci family
from Vodnjan. Klaudio Ipša, an olive
grower was awarded for his oil produced using a traditional oil press,
whilst the Belci family was awarded
for its home-produced autochthonous buža variety which they have
been working hard to promote together with other autochthonous varieties such as Vodnjan crnica, rozinjola,
moražola and žižolera. Besides the
prize-winning olive growers, another
42 Istrian olive growers and one
Dalmatian grower won special mentions by being selected to appear in
the guide-book itself. With that Istria
won the second highest place, right
after Tuscany. It is interesting to point
out that this publication included 42
countries from five continents.

hat unter 15 der besten Öle weltweit
auch das istrische Öl von Klaudio Ipša
aus dem Gebiet von Buje, sowie das
Öl der Familie Belci aus Vodnjan betont. Der Olivenanbauer Klaudio Ipša
wurde für sein Öl der Sorte frantoio
und die Familie Belci für die bodenständige heimische Sorte “buža”
prämiert, an deren Promotion, neben
anderen istrischen bodenständigen
Sorten wie der “vodnjanska crnica”,
der “rozinjola”, der “moražola” und
der “žižolera” sorgfältig gearbeitet
wird. Neben den prämierten Olivenanbauern haben durch die Einreihung in den Führer noch 42 istrische Olivenanbauer, sowie einer aus
Dalmatien eine besondere Auszeichnung erhalten. Dadurch hat Istrien
im Führer den hohen zweiten Platz,
gleich nach der Toskana, eingenommen. Es ist interessant zu betonen,
dass in dieser Ausgabe 42 Länder
von 5 Kontinenten vertreten sind.

Choose the Orchid trail and ride from the ancient
sea, Kamenjak leaves nobody indifferent. An important note for all nature lovers: you are in an
area with high biological diversity where you can
find almost 500 herb species including 22 types of
orchids. When you get tired of all of these beauties, you can have a rest in one of the numerous
bays or under fragrant pine trees and then continue
along the trail through Premantura and Pomer to
the starting point in Medulin.

Mutila, nowadays Medulin, along well-intended coast of the southern part of Istria. Following fresh
fragrance of the pinewood you will reach a nearby
magnificent 2 km long sandy beach and another
attraction, an archaeological site with remains of
a Roman villa situated at the bay of the peninsula called Vizula. Continuing along the trail you will
arrive to Pomer, a village located on the western
part of Medulin bay with well preserved remains
of villas and thermae which testifies that it existed
already in the Roman period. In case you get hungry, you should know that Pomer, which used to
be famous for fish and shell farming, is nowadays
known for excellent fish and seafood restaurants.
Passing through Kamik and the Roman quarry in
Vinkuran you will arrive to Banjole. The trail continues upwards towards Monte Kope. Continuing
along the trail you will reach Premantura, famous
for a long and narrow peninsula Kamenjak, the real
pearl of this place. Cape Kamenjak, 9,5 km long
and just 1,5 km wide, has been proclaimed a protected landscape area. Surrounded by the 30 km
long coast with numerous gulfs, bays and white
beaches washed by the crystal clear blue-green

Sie in der Nähe einen wunderschönen 2 km langen
Strand entdecken und in der Bucht der Halbinsel
Vižula die Überreste einer luxuriösen römischen
Sommerresidenz vorfinden. Der Weg führt weiter
nach Pomer im Westteil der Meduliner Bucht, wo
Ausgrabungen gut erhaltener Villen und Thermen
von der Römerzeit erzählen. Sollten Sie hungrig
sein, laden einige sehr gute Restaurants in der einst
berühmten Fisch- und Muschelzuchtstätte Pomer
zu Tisch. Der Weg führt weiter über Kamik und den
römischen Steinbruch in Vinkuran nach Banjole, einem weiteren Fischerdorf. Danach geht es über
Kamik bergab nach Monte Kope. Die Route führt
nun nach Premantura, einem, seit der Bronzezeit
ständig bewohnten, malerischen Ort an der südlichen Spitze Istriens. Kap Kamenjak ist ein Naturschutzgebiet von 9,5 km Länge und 1,5 km Breite
- ein Paradies, dass niemanden gleichgültig lässt:
30 km Küste, unzählige romantische Buchten mit
kleinen weißen, von kristallklarem Meer umspülten,
Stränden und überall große Natur und die üppigen
Düften des Mittelmeeres. Das Naturschutzgebiet ist
bekannt für seine reiche biologische Vielfalt (fast
500 Pflanzenarten!) auf kleinstem Raum. Allein 22
Orchideenarten gedeihen hier, unter ihnen auch die
endemische „Serapis istriaca“. Wer die Schönheit
der Natur mit Zeit und Muße auf sich wirken lässt,
sollte dieses Erlebnis für spätere Tagträume mit
nach Hause nehmen. Ein Sonnenbad in den zahlreichen Buchten oder ein Nickerchen im Schatten duftender Pinien, machen das Glück perfekt, bevor Sie
über Premantura und Pomer zum Ausgangspunkt
Medulin zurück fahren.

The Croatian trekking league is
made up of a group of hiking
races through the most attractive locations in Croatia, and
the Easter race will take place
within the wider area of the
town of Buzet and most of the
Ćićarija Mountain. According
to the regulations, competitors should, with the help of a
compass, a map and obligatory
equipment, within a limited time
period, pass on foot through
all the registered control points
as fast as possible. In so doing
they must overcome a variety of
terrains, orient themselves and
try to find the best possible way
of reaching the set points, plan
the necessary food reserves and
strategies of moving and resting
as well as adhering to all technical and ecological rules. Trekking
characteristics as a sport include
moving through untouched nature and areas that are visible only
to guests on panoramic flights,
so that race participants will be
able to experience Istria in a new
and unforgettable way.
Die kroatische Trekking Liga wird
durch eine Sammlung von Bergrennen an den attraktivsten
Standorten Kroatienweit gebildet und das Osterrennen wird

Regatas in Rabac
With the arrival of warmer days, the more passionate yachtsmen will also set their sails and
navigate through the Adriatic for these three
spring regattas within the Rabac aquatorium. If
you love this sport, you should certainly walk
along the Rabac shore, stop and abandon
yourself in the experience of white views over
the width of the blue sea. If you are not a particular lover of sailing, the reasons to come to
Rabac still exist as the regatta season starts here
with the Voga teleferika, traditional paddle boat
race. This race was included in the local holiday
celebration organized to celebrate the beginning
of the tourist season, on the last weekend of
April, bringing with it a lot of food, beverages and
a popular feast. Already in mid May, the Labin
Republic holds its open regatta starting from Rabac waterfront. This is a two-day sporting spectacle with more than 20 sailboats and around a
hundred competitors from the Istria and Rijeka
area whilst for the occasion, organizers prepare
a rich entertainment programme. In mid June
the optimist and laser regatta takes place, so
you really should try to be in Rabac this spring
where numerous sailing excitements await you.

Regatten in Rabac
Durch die Ankunft der wärmeren Tage werden die
leidenschaftlichsten Segler die Segel aufspannen und
am adriatischen Meer entlang segeln und zwar auf sogar drei Frühjahrsregatten im Aquatorium von Rabac.
Falls Sie Liebhaber dieses Sports sind, sollten Sie auf
jeden Fall an der Küste von Rabac entlang spazieren;
bleiben Sie stehen und geben Sie sich dem Erlebnis
der weißen Ansicht auf dem blauen Meeresraum hin.
Falls Sie auch kein besonderer Liebhaber des Segelns
sind, gibt es dennoch Grund genug nach Rabac zu
kommen, denn die Regattensaison beginnt hier mit
dem Voga teleferika, einem traditionellen Rennen mit
Paddeln. Dieses Rennen ist im Ortsfest integriert, welches zum Anbruch der Tourismussaison am letzten
Wochenende im April organisiert wird und eine Fülle
an Speisen, Getränken und Volksvergnügen mit sich
bringt. Bereits Mitte Mai ist die Republika von Labin an
der Reihe, eine offene Kreuzfahrtregatta mit Start an
der Riva von Rabac. Es ist die Rede von einem zweitägigen Sportspektakel mit mehr als 20 Segelbooten
und über Hunderten von Wettkämpfern vom Gebiet
Istriens und Rijekas. Die Organisatoren organisieren
dazu ein reiches Unterhaltungsprogramm. Mitte Juni
wird wiederum die Regatta für Optimisten und Laser
abgehalten. Seien deshalb auch Sie in diesem Frühjahr
in Rabac, wo Sie zahlreiche Segelemotionen erwarten.
Kayak & Canoe Novigrad
The river Mirna is the longest and the most
abundant Istrian river. Its springs are in the village
of Kotli, not far from Hum and it flows into the
Adriatic near Novigrad. Porto Quieto could once
be found at its mouth which during the Middle
Ages, together with Venice, was one of the largest
ports of the northern Adriatic. The river Mirna was
navigable almost to the beginning of the Second
World War. The river completely justifies its name
(Mirna = Calm) with its tranquillity and so it is ideal
for canoeists and kayakers. The river is winding in
the upper part of the flow whilst it peaks before
the hill situated over the picturesque Motovun, and
is transformed into a long, straight channel and
has this form to the mouth. If the water level is
favourable, the length of the route along which it
is possible to row for around 35 kilometres long.
Under the guidance of expert kayakers, kayaking
tours along the Mirna River mouth last around 4
hours. The price of 190 kn per person includes a
packed lunch, a guide, a kayak and paddle, a life
jacket and “barrels”, that is storage for clothes
and other belongings.

Der Fluss Mirna ist der längste und wasserreichste
istrische Fluss. Er entspringt im Dorf Kotli unweit
von Hum und fließt bei Novigrad in das Adriatische
Meer. An seiner Mündung befand sich der Hafen
Porto Quieto, im Mittelalter neben Venedig eine
der größten Anlegestellen an der nördlichen Adria.
Fast bis zum Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs war
der Fluss Mirna schiffbar. Durch seine Gelassenheit
(Mirna) rechtfertigt er zur Gänze seinen Namen und
ist deshalb ideal für Kajak- und Kanufahrer. Der
Fluss windet sich im oberen Teil des Wasserlaufs,
während er sich vor dem Berg, an dessen Gipfel sich
das pitorreske Motovun befindet, in einen langen
geraden Kanal ganz bis zur Mündung transformiert.
Wenn der Wasserstand günstig ist, beträgt die Länge
der Trasse entlang welcher Sie paddeln können
ca. 35 Kilometer. Unter fachkundiger Führung von
Kajakexperten dauern die Kajaktouren entlang der
Mündung des Flusses Mirna in etwa 4 Stunden. Der
Preis ab 190 kn pro Person beinhaltet Lunchpaket,
Führer, Kajak und Paddel, Schwimmweste, sowie
“Fässer” bzw. Behälter für Kleidung und andere Dinge.

The Iskrice Children’s Festival of spiritual music already traditionally gathers children’s parish choirs and
soloists from the Poreč and Pula bishopric as well as elementary schools from the whole of Istria. During
the festival the Vodnjan market place is turned into a small angelic town with the echoes of the most
beautiful sounds of gentle melodies performed by children’s spiritual music.
Kinderfestival der geistlichen Musik Fünkchen versammelt seit Jahren die Kinderchöre und Solisten aus
der Diözese Poreč-Pula und aus den Grundschulen aus ganz Istrien. Während des Festivals verwandelt
sich der Hauptplatz von Vodnjan durch die geistliche Kindermusik in das Engelsstädtchen mit dem sanften

Safaripark Nationalpark Brijuni
On the northern edge of the island Veli Brijun, there
is a safari park stretching over 9 hectares of land.
Founded in 1978, it is the habitat of many exotic herbivores, zebras among others. Steppe and mountain
zebras were received as a gift from Guinean president Ahmed Sekou Toure in 1960 and 1961. Centuries ago, an ancient Roman writer wrote about the
emperor Caracalla who, apart from tigers, elephants
and rhinoceroses, also sent a ‘striped horse’ into
the arena and killed it with his own hands in 211 AD.
The writer was surely referring to a type of African
striped wild horse, or the zebra. However, mountain
zebras show more resemblance to donkeys than
to horses; they live in the mountainous regions of
southern and eastern Africa, usually in large herds
with antelopes, giraffes and ostriches. Even the lion,
zebra’s ‘chief’ foe, fears its small, but extremely hard
hoof. Until today, all attempts to tame zebras and
train them to work as domestic animals have failed.
Zoologists still have different theories on whether
their color pattern helps them to blend in with the
surroundings or not.

Im nördlichen Bereich von Veliki Brijun wurde
1978 in einem abgezäunten Gebiet in der Größe
von 9 ha ein Safaripark eingerichtet, in dem exotische Pflanzenfresser leben. Das Steppen- und
Bergzebra kam als ein Geschenk von Seku Ture
aus Guinea 1960 und 1961 nach Brioni. Ein altertümlicher lateinischer Schreiber berichtete, dass
der römische Kaiser Caracalla im Jahr 211 n. Chr.
außer Tigern, Elefanten, Nashörnern, auch ein ‘Tigerpferd’ in die Arena schickte, und es eigenhändig tötete. Offensichtlich hat dieser Schreiber bei
dieser Bezeichnung an eine Art der afrikanischen
wilden Pferde, bzw. Zebras gedacht. Das Bergzebra ähnelt mehr einem Esel als einem Pferd. Sie
leben in den Gebirgsregionen Süd- und Ostafrikas und bewegen sich meist in großen Herden
zusammen mit Antilopen, Giraffen und Straußen.
Selbst der Löwe, zu dessen Beute sie werden
können, fürchtet ihre kleinen jedoch stahlharten
Hufen. Trotz zahlreicher Versuche ist es bis heute
nicht gelungen, Zebras als Haustiere zu zähmen.
Heute noch gibt es unter den Zoologen unterschiedliche Meinungen, ob ihr gestreiftes Fell als
Schutz in der Landschaft dient, oder nicht.

Messier Marathon
Der Messier-Marathon

In the 18th century, the astronomer Charles Messier classified 110 celestial bodies, and today, the
Messier Marathon takes place on Rušnjak in his honour. The competition brings together young astronomers from all over Croatia and its surrounding
countries whose main task is to identify as many of
Messier’s celestial bodies as possible. Whilst some
of them find these planets using telescopes from
dusk until the early morning hours, others follow
interesting and educational lessons and take part
in discussions. The competition is tighter every year
as young astronomers are ever faster, better, and
more experienced and the night sky and the planets
it contains are ever closer to them.
Noch im 18. Jahrhundert hat der Astronom Charles Messier 110 Himmelskörper kategorisiert, und
immer noch heute findet zu seinen Ehren der
Messier-Marathon am Rušnjak statt. Der Wettkampf
versammelt die jungen Astronomen aus ganz Kroatien und den umliegenden Ländern, deren Hauptaufgabe darin besteht, möglichst viele Messiers

Himmelsobjekte zu identifizieren. Während einige
von ihnen von Dämmerung bis zum Morgengrauen
mit Teleskopen die Planeten beobachten, besuchen
die anderen interessante und fruchtbare Vorlesungen, und nehmen an Diskussionen teil. Der Wettbewerb wird aber jedes Jahr fraglicher, denn die
jungen Astronomen werden von Jahr zu Jahr immer
schneller, besser und erfahrener, und gleichzeitig
stehen ihnen der Nachthimmel und die Planeten
immer näher.

The Pazin Popular Open Educational Institution has
been organising the biggest Istrian dance competition for all visitors and dance lovers since 1995 in
the concert hall of the Memorial Centre. Dozens of
dance groups from almost every Istrian town will
present their skills and talent in front of numerous
spectators. The extremely strong competition in a
number of categories, from young elementary to
high school pupils will leave you breathless while
performing their dance acrobatics, music and choreographies.
The best groups will win trophies
in their categories both for their

Liebhaber vom Tanz, in der Konzerthalle von „Spomen dom“, den

ihnen mit der Musik, Choreographie und akrobatischen Tanzfiguren, den Atem nehmen werden.
Schließlich erhalten die besten
Gruppen in ihrer Kategorie den
Pokal als Lohn für ihre Bemühungen und Arbeit.
Fort Verudela
Aquarium Pula
Fort Verudela is a part of the
Austro-Hungarian defence system of the town Pula, which
represents the culmination of
European fortification architecture of 19th century. Verudela is
a coastal fortress, and it is one
of 55 defensive structures, which
were used to defend Pula against
enemies from the sea. It is situated at an altitude of 31 meters
and was built and furnished from
1881 to 1886 using a traditional
technique with stone blocks.
The arches are built from brick
and reinforced concrete, and
the trench was hollowed out of
solid rock. At the same time the
battery San Giovanni was built
nearby, with which the fortress
Verudela made a unique defensive compound.
Die Festung Verudela ist ein Teil
des österreich-ungarischen Abwehrsystems der Stadt Pula, die
eine Krönung des europäischen
Festungsbaus im 19. Jahrhundert darstellen. Die Verudela ist
eine Küstenfestung, und eine
von 55 Verteidigungsobjekten,
die einstmals Pula von den Feinden von Seiten des Meers verteidigten. Sie ist auf einer Höhe
von 31 m über dem Meer gelegen, gebaut und ausgerüstet
im Zeitraum von 1881 bis 1886
mit der traditionalen Technik mit
Steinblöcken. Die Gewölbe sind
mit Mauersteinen und armiertem
Beton gebaut, und der Burggraben ist in lebenden Felsen eingehöhlt. Zur gleichen Zeit ist die
nahegelegene Batterie San Giovanni gebaut, mit der die Festung

The Miner’s Adventure Labin
At the beginning of 1960s, on the ground floor
and basement part of the building, where today
the Labin National Musem can be found, is the

coal excavation can be seen. Further along the
way, close to the storage and sub-station, is the
wagon used for the transport of minerals that still
today is waiting to be loaded. Here is the spot for
measuring the presence of methane gas mixed with
coal dust as well as the diesel locomotive which
was used for dragging the wagons and also as a
handy miner’s workshop. On the second level is
the stone hall which had to be perforated in order
to reach the coal sediments again. In the final part
of the miner’s exhibition the old way of digging
using simple hand tools and utensils dating back
to the beginning of 19th century is presented.
Throughout the visit, visitors are followed by the
sounds registered at the Tupljak mine just before
its closure.

This famous cave is situated in western Istria,
between Poreč, Višnjan and Tar, only 5 km from
the coast. The karst region where it was created
consists of the sea sediment covered with red
soil (terra rossa). From the vertical entrance into
the cave, situated at 117 m above sea level, a
spectacular view stretches over olive groves and
vineyards all the way to the sea. The sightseeing
lasts 40 minutes. As visitors descend along a
300 m long pathway, they are led through 5
beautifully decorated chambers and to an underground lake at 60 m below the ground. An
important detail of the Baredine adventure is its
underground world of animals: this is the habitat
of proteus (Proteus anguinus Laurenti), a rare
amphibian endemic to the subterranean waters
of the Dinaric karst. In one of the chambers you
will see a 4m wide opening that stretches into
the ground for another 66 meters, setting the
total depth of the cave at 132m.
Die Höhle Baredine befindet sich im westlichen Teil
Istriens zwischen Poreč, Višnjan und Tar, nur 5km
von der Küste entfernt. Das Karstgebiet, in dem die
Höhle entstanden ist, ist ein Meeressediment, das
aus dem Kreidezeitalter stammt und mit roter Erde
(terra rossa) bedeckt ist. Vom vertikalen Eingang in
die Höhle, der sich auf 117m über dem Meeresspiegel
befindet, bietet sich über Plantagen von Oliven und
Weingärten ein wunderschöner Blick bis zum Meer.
Die Besichtigung dauert 40 Minuten. Man begeht
einen 300m langen Pfad, besucht 5 wunderschön
dekorierte Säle und steigt bis zu 60 m und einem See
ab. Ein interessantes Detail dieser abenteuerlichen
Reise ist der Grottenolm (Proteus Anguinus Laurenti),
ein Endem dieser Karstregion - ein kleines Tierchen,
das man nur in diesem Karstgebiet vorfinden kann.
In einem der Säle geht man an einem 4m breiten
Abgrund vorbei, der vertikal nach unten zu dem
tiefsten Punkt der Höhle auf -132 m führt.

Abenteuer der Bergarbeiter
Labin
Im Erdgeschoss- und Kellerteil des Gebäudes des
heutigen Volksmuseums Labin wurde Anfang der
60er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts eine ständige Bergarbeiter Aufstellung mit einer Länge von ca. 150
Metern erbaut. Heute ist diese geöffnet und stellt
ein wahres Abenteuer für die ganze Familie dar,
welches Sie in die fast vergessene unterirdische
Welt der istrischen Bergarbeiter führt.
Das Abenteuer beginnt bei der Kohlegrube, welche
in den Teil des Bergwerks führt, wo die Arten des
Aufhaltens des Wassers zur Ermöglichung des Ausgrabens von Kohle dargestellt werden. Weiter befindet sich neben dem Lager und der Trafostation ein
Waggon zur Beförderung des Erzes, welcher auch
heute noch auf die Ladung wartet. Hier ist auch der
Punkt zur Messung der Präsenz von Methangas in
Vermischung mit Kohlestaub und die Diesellokomotive, welche zum Ziehen des Waggons diente, sowie
als handliche Werkstatt der Bergarbeiter. Auf zweiter Ebene befindet sich ein Durchgang im Felsen,
welchen man durchbrechen musste, um erneut
an Ablagerungen von Kohle zu gelangen. Im Schlussteil der Bergarbeiter Aufstellung wird die alte
Weise des Grabens mit einfachem Handwerkzeug
und Zubehör vom Anfang des 19. Jh. dargestellt.
Während der gesamten Besichtigung werden die
Besucher von Klängen begleitet, welche im Bergwerk Tupljak ummittelbar vor dessen Schließung
aufgenommen wurden.
