Since recently Tiësto can praise himself with the title of the best DJ of all times, achieved by gathering
the largest number of votes of the Mixmag magazine’s
readers. The Dutch performs in the whole world and
collaborates with numerous music stars and its remixes
(Muse, Justin Timberlake, The Killers, Busta Rhymes)
became recognized on a global level and regularly find
their way to the tops of the top lists. He recorded the
single with which he announced his last Kaleidoscope
album, ‘Who wants to be alone’, in collaboration with
Nelly Furtado. These kind of spectacles on the Istrian
coast are not to be missed, so do not forget to UMAGINATION yourselves this June in Umag!

er die größte Stimmenzahl der Leser des Magazins Mixmag sammelte. Der Holländer tritt weltweit auf und

integral part of the Adria Music Conference is Umagination, a world-renowned music and entertainment

Ancient bridge Poreč
As you walk from the Trg slobode square towards
the old part of Poreč, take a moment to look at the
barely visible, cobbled elevation of ground. You will
spot it at the beginning of the old Decumanus street
that opens ahead of you. Here, buried under thick
layers of soil and paving stones, lies an ancient bridge which centuries ago led to the main town gate.
The gate was later demolished, but the bridge is still
here, safe and sound, waiting to be uncovered. Its
existence has long been suspected, but it wasn’t
confirmed until some 10 years ago, when the site
was archaeologically explored. Cadastral maps of
1820 show no signs of this bridge, so the exact times of its construction and burying remain unclear.
There are plans to uncover it again and restore an
interesting part of the town’s past, when travellers
had to cross a bridge if they wanted to enter Poreč.
When walking along the town streets, just stop for
a while and listen to some history under your feet.

Während Sie vom Platz der Freiheit in Richtung
Altstadt von Poreč spazieren, halten Sie einfach für
einen Moment inne und betrachten Sie einmal, auf
dem Pflaster, die kaum sichtbare Bodenerhebung.
Bemerken werden Sie diese Bodenerhebung gleich
am Anfang der sich vor Ihnen erstreckenden, alten
Decumanus Straße. Denn an dieser Stelle, unter
einer dicken Bodenschicht und unter Steinplatten
vergraben, liegt eine alte Brücke, die vor vielen
Jahrhunderten bis zum Haupttor der Stadt führte.
Das Tor wurde später zwar abgerissen, aber die
Brücke befindet sich immer noch hier, sicher und
erhalten und wartet darauf, ausgegraben zu werden.
Lange wurde vermutet, dass sich an diesem Ort vor
langer Zeit eine Brücke befunden hat, doch diese
Annahme wurde erst vor etwa zehn Jahren durch
archäologische Erforschungen definitiv bestätigt. In
den Katasterkarten aus dem Jahr 1820 ist die Brücke nicht vermerkt, so dass die genaue Zeit ihrer
Erbauung und Zuschüttung bis jetzt unklar ist. Ihre
Wiedereröffnung ist geplant, womit ein interessanter
Teil der Stadtgeschichte zu Leben erweckt werden
würde, in der die Reisenden falls sie nach Poreč
hineintreten wollten, die Brücke überqueren mussten. Bleiben Sie bei Ihrem Spatziergang durch die
Stadt stehen und lassen Sie nicht zu, dass Ihnen die
Geschichte für einen kurzen Augenblick unter den
Füßen „entwischt“!
Sveti Lovreč, an undiscovered gem

The ancient Istrian town of Sveti
Lovreč is an undiscovered gem
- so far only scholars and some
enthusiasts have truly comprehended its huge historical value.
Still, it may seem surprising that
to this day Sv. Lovreč has remained outside the usual routes of
travellers, given its proximity to
summer hubs like Poreč, Vrsar
and Rovinj, and given that it boasts one of the best preserved
fortification systems in Istria. Indeed, a vast majority of tourists
remain unaware of its long and
high stone walls, some great
examples of medieval towers,
and the 21 m high bell-tower,
itself built into the fortification.
The oldest parts of the impressive defence walls were built in
the 11th century, while the 17 m
high Funtanela tower has a well
preserved staircase of stone
that once led to the top. Located
about 5 kilometres to the north
of the Lim Bay, the old fortress
of Sveti Lovreč is worth discovering. Nowadays it lives a peaceful
life, beaming with traces of past
times.
Das altertümliche Städtchen Sveti
Lovreč ist ein wirklich unentdecktes Juwel - bisher haben nur
wenige Gelehrte und Enthusiasten seinen historischen Wert
vollständig erfasst. Nach wie
vor mag es überraschend klingen, dass Sveti Lovreč bis heute,
trotz seiner Nähe zu den Urlaubszentren wie Poreč, Vrsar und
Rovinj, abseits der üblichen Reiserouten lieg, obgleich es dort
allerhand zu entdecken gibt und
das Städtchen stolz auf eine der
am besten erhaltenen Festungsanlagen in Istrien ist. Wahrlich,
die große Mehrheit entdeckt nie
ihre langen und hohen Steinmauern, etliche großartige mittelalterliche Türme und die 21 Meter
hohe Glockenturm-Festung, welche in den Verteidigungsgürtel
eingebettet ist. Die ältesten Teile
der Stadtmauer wurden im 11.
Jahrhundert erbaut und die 17
Meter hohe Turmruine Fontanella verfügt über eine hervorragend
erhaltene steinerne Treppe, die
einst zur Burgspitze führte. Fünf
Kilometer nördlich vom Limfjord
gelegen, ist die alte Festung Sveti
Lovreč ein Ort den es zu entdecken lohnt. Heute lebt der Ort
ein ruhiges Dasein und erstrahlt
durch seine Spuren.

Untouched nature, mild climate, fertile land - there
is nothing unusual about the fact that already in
Antiquity the area of today’s Medulin Riviera was
well-populated. Past archaeological research has
confirmed with certainty that a luxurious residential
part of the villa was situated on the western side of
the Vižula peninsula, whereas on the southeastern
side was a pier with storage area and houses for
merchants, servants and slaves. Analysis of visible
architectural remains shows that several phases of
construction and use of architectural remains from
the 1st to 7th centuries can be distinguished. It is
a maritime-residential complex with several buildings which, in line with the Roman architectural
canon, were constructed toward the elevated part
of the peninsula in three or more terraces. Parts of
the villa were built on natural terraces and partially
carved into the limestone of the slope which gently
descended toward the shore. The villa was ideally
incorporated into the Mediterranean landscape.

Daher ist es nicht ungewöhnlich, dass man in der
Antike auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Meduliner Riviera ein beeindruckendes Leben führte.
Die bisherigen archäologischen Forschungen stellten mit Sicherheit fest, dass an der Westseite der
Halbinsel Vižula der luxuriöse Wohnresidenzteil der
Villa erbaut war. An der südöstlichen Seite die Anlegestelle mit Lagerräumen und Häusern für Händler,
Bedienstete und Sklaven. Durch die Analyse der Architektur wurde erschlossen, dass man einige Bauphasen und Funktionen der entdeckten Räume vom
1. bis 7. Jahrhundert unterscheiden kann. Es handelt
sich um einen maritimen residentiellen Komplex
eines Baugefüges, das in Übereinstimmung mit
den römischen Bauvorschriften, terrassenartig bis
zur Anhöhe der Halbinsel mit drei oder mehreren
Terrassen projektiert wurde. Teile der Villa wurden
auf natürlichen Terrassen, teilweise im Kalkstein,
am Hang des Hügels herausgearbeitet, der sanft
zur Meeresküste abfällt. Die Terrassen fügten sich
ideal in die natürliche Umgebung ein.

Fažana
The name Fažana is related to
ancient Phasiana and Vasianum.
Very often the name of the town
is connected with the field bird
pheasant or pottery. In Roman times
an especially important activity in
this area was the production of
amphoras. In ancient documents
Fažana was mentioned in 1150 as
an old parish which the bishops
of Pula received by the emperor’s
consent at the beginning of the
11th century. This was followed by
a period during which it was the
property of various noble families,
Aquileian patriarchs and patricians
of Pula, Jonatasi. The centuries of
Venetian rule left traces on the
appearance of this coastal town. The
waters of Fažana were the site of a
naval battle that took place in 1379
between two republics, Venice and
Genoa. There were about 250 ships
and the Venetian fleet was defeated.
Der Name Fažana steht in Verbindung mit den Namen Phasiana und
Vasianum. Oft wird die Wurzel des
Ortes mit dem Begriff des Fasans,
des Feldvogels, oder auch mit der
Töpferei in Verbindung gebracht.
In alten Dokumenten wird Fažana
bereits im Jahr 1150 als alte Pfarre
erwähnt, die Anfang des 11. Jahrhunderts vom Kaiser den Bischöfen
von Pula geschenkt wurde. Es folgt
eine Zeit, in der es verschiedenen
Grafenhäusern, den Patriarchen von
Aquiläa, den Patriziern von Pula, den
Jonatasi gehörte. Das Jahrhundert
unter der Herrschaft der Republik
des Heiligen Markus prägte das
Aussehen des Küstenortes. In den
Gewässern von Fažana fand im Jahr
1379 eine Seeschlacht zwischen den
Republiken Venedig und Genua statt.

die Goten ein, danach die Byzantiner und die Franken.
Fast drei Jahrhunderte lang stand Vodnjan unter der
Feudalherrschaft des Patriarchen von Aquileia, bis sich
die Bewohner Vodnjans im Jahre 1331 dazu entschlossen, daß es un ihrem Bestreben nach einer zumindest
begrenzten Autonomie, vorteilhafter wäre, sich den im
Aufsteigen befindlichen Venezianern zu unterwerfen,
unter deren, nicht immer liebsamer Herrschaft, sie bis
zum Untergang der Venezianischen Republik (1797)
standen. Vodnjan war stets von strategischer Bedeutung: hier waren militärische Besatzungen, Truppen und
mittelalterliche Verteidigungsformationen von tausend
Soldaten stationiert. Im Jahr 1615 gelang es ihnen den
Angriff von 700 ängstlichen Überläufern und 50 Reitern
des österreichischen Herzogs abzuwehren. Auf dem
Schlachtfeld fielen 200 Angreifer. Nach einer kurzen Episode unter Napoleon, begann die hundert Jahre lange
Zeit unter Österreich-Ungarischer Krone.

Five kilometres from Buje towards Pula lies the settlement Krasica with nearby hamlets like Gardoši,
Baredine, Lozari, Punta and others. The scattered
hills used to be seats of prehistoric fortresses.
The findings from the Roman Age reveal huge fortresses like Gradina, located at the important road,
Via Flavia. Inscriptions, artefacts and coins, votive
figurine of the Goddess Fortune, fragments of carved marble and columns are kept in museums in
Trieste, Pula und Poreč or have been built into the
side wall of the church in Buje.
Fünf Kilometer von Buje in Richtung Pula entfernt,
liegt die Ortschaft Krasica mit benachbarten kleinen
Dörfern wie Gardoši, Baredine, Lozari, Punta und
noch kleineren Dörfchen. Die herumliegenden Hügeln waren der Sitz der vorgeschichtlichen Festungen. Die Befunde aus römischer Zeit zeugen von
großen Burgen, wie Gradina, gelegen an der sehr
bedeutenden Verkehrsstraße Via Flavia. Inschriften,
Gegenstände und Münzen, Weihstatuette der Göttin
Fortuna, ausgearbeiteter Marmor, Bruchstücke von
Säulen sind in Museen in Trieste, Pula und Poreč
aufbewahrt oder an der äußeren Seitenmauer der
Pfarrkirche in Buje eingebaut
Together with the villages and small towns which lean
against it (Galižana, Fažana), Vodnjan shared the faith of the southwest Istria. After the Fall of the Roman
Empire the first to come were the Goths, and than the
Byzantines and the Franks. For almost three centuries Vodnjan was a feud of the Aquilean Patriarch until
1331 when the Vodnjan inhabitants, hoping to get at
least some kind of restricted autonomy, decided that
it would be more profitable to yield to the ascending
Venetians. They stayed under their not always popular
rule until the fall of the ‘Serenissima’ - the Enlightened
Republic (1797). Vodnjan has always had a certain strategic importance: it accommodated military garrisons,
‘cernide’ the mediaeveal protecting formations made
up of a thousand soldiers. In 1615 they managed to
resist successfully the attack of 700 fierce deserters
and 50 mounted soldiers of the Austrian Duke. 200
attackers remaind on the battle ground. After the short
Napoleonic episode, a hundred year period of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire begun.

teilten das Schicksal des südwestlichen Istrien. Nach

Barban is a small historical village situated on the plateau separating the Labin from Pula area. Ancient Romans used to live in the prehistoric hill-fort. Throughout
history Barban had a strategic position dominating the
high ground and controlling the valley and the bridge
on the Raša river. Gradually, the village developed into
the fortified castle with round and square towers, de-
fensive walls and big and small town gates as well as
the citadel. In 1535 it was bought from the counts of
Pazin by the Venetian noble family Loredans whose
members, although living in Barban only temporary and
represented by the captain, pulled it down and built the
palace and the parish church of St. Nicholas. In front of
the big town gates there is a small stony church of St.
Anthony the Monk from the 15th century which interior
is covered with frescoes.
Barban ist ein kleiner historischer Ort gelegen an der
Hangebene, welche das Gebiet von Labin und von Pula
trennt. Auf der vorhistorischen Erbauung wohnten die
alten Römer. Durch die Geschichte hindurch war Barban auch bekannt für die strategische Lage, dominant
anhand der Erhebung und beherrschend anhand des
Tals und der Brücke am Fluss Raša. Stufenweise wird
der Ort zur Festung mit Mauern, runden und viereckigen Türmen, Bollwerken, großen und kleinen städtischen Toren, sowie einer Burg. Im Jahre 1535 kauft
die venezianische adelige Familie Loredan diese von
den Grafen Pazins, und deren Familienmitglieder, auch
wenn sie nur zeitweise in Barban wohnen, und vom
Kapitän vertreten werden, werden die alte Festung
einreißen und auf deren Platz einen Palast sowie die
Pfarrkirche des Hl. Nikola erbauen. Vor den großen
städtischen Toren befindet sich die kleine steinerne
Kirche des Hl. Anton Opat aus dem 15. Jh. deren Inneres mit Fresken bebildert ist.

Austrian period
With the fall of Napoleon, Austria
gained control from Venice over
the Trieste Bay and the entire
northern Adriatic to Albania. Its
rule lasted nearly a whole century, until World War I, and this
peaceful period provided circumstances for a gradual development in all Istria. Unlike France,
Austria increased the autonomy
of the local population, respected
statutes, lifted levies and duties,
and established trade with Trieste
and Rijeka. Particularly important
was the railway built in the 1870s
that connected Italy, and Austria
with Poreč, Pula and Rovinj.
Brijuni Islands
Brijuni Islands became the
fashionable meeting place of
the Austrian aristocracy. The Austrian industrialist Paul Kupelwieser bought the abandoned and
malaric archipelago. He asked
the well-known Nobel Prize winner Robert Koch to assist him in
ridding the archipelago of malaria. As a sign of gratitude, Kupelwieser had a monument erected
on Veli Brijun island in honour of
this great scientist. The owner
now conceived the archipelago
according to the highest standards of a fashionable summer
resort. He had many trees from
all parts of the world planted on
the islands, had potable water
brought to the island, built an
indoor swimming pool with heated sea water, golf courses and
grounds for horse races, bicycle
trails, walking paths, etc. The zoo
was opened in 1911. The Brijuni

thus became a world known tourist resort for kings, princesses,
counts and industrialists, opera
divas and writers. This was the
holiday resorts of the Saxon
King Friedrich August III, German
Emperor William II and Empress
Victoria Augusta, Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz
Ferdinand and Sophia Hochenberg, Montenegro’s King Nikola I
Petrović Njegoš, as well as many
others. Writers James Joyce, Thomas Mann, Karl Kraus, Herman
Bahr, and a number of painters
stayed here as well. The Brioni
Insel Zeitung (The Brioni Islands
Newspaper) brought names of all
visitors as well as other interesting details.

Die Österreichische
periode
Nach dem Sieg über Napoleon
herrscht die Habsburgermonarchie über eine große Region, von
Venedig bis Albanien, und zwar
fast das ganze Jahrhundert lang.
Die Städte hatten schon wieder
große Autonomie, die Bevölkerung war abgabenfrei. Gleich-
zeitig förderten die Österreicher
den Handel mit Trieste und Rijeka. Von sehr großer Bedeutung
war die im ausgehenden 1870.
Jh gebaute Eisenbahn, die Italien
und Österreich mit Pula, Poreč
ind Rovinj verband.
Brijuni Inseln
Brijuni Inseln werden zum Erholungsort österreichischer Monarchie. Der österreichische
Unternehmer Paul Kupelwieser
kaufte ä89ö die verwüsteten und
malarischen Inseln und brachte
dort den Erfinder des Penicilins
Robert Koch dem es gelang,
Malaria für immer zu bewältigen, Aus Dankbarkeit ließ Kupelwieser ihm auf Veli Brijun
ein Denkmal bauen. Der Innhaber richtete
die Insel nach den Standards eines mondänen Urlaubsortes ein: Er ließ verschiedene
Pflanzen und Bäume pflanzen, Wasserleitung,
Schwimmbad, Sportplätze, Radfahrwege und
Spaziergänge bauen, usw. 1911. wurde dort
ein Zoo eröffnet. Die Brijuni Inseln wurden zu
bekannten und beliebten Touristendestination von Königen, Fürsten, Grafen, Unternehmern, Schriftstellern. Dort erholte sich der
sächsische Kaiser Friedrich August III, der
deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm II, Kaiserin Viktoria
Augusta, der österreich-ungarische Thronerbe Franz Ferdinand und seine Frau Sofia
Hochenberg, der montenegrinische Kaiser
Nikola Petrović Njegoš I, Schriftsteller James
Joyce, Thomas Mann, Hermann Bahr, sowie
zahlreiche Maler und viele andere. über bekannte Gäste und andere interessante Details schrieb ausführlich eine zur damaligen
Zeit erschienende Wochenzeitschrift, die
„Brioni Insel-Zeitung“.

St. Anthony’s Church Vrsar
Within easy reach of the town gate there
is the church of St. Anthony of Padova
dating from the second half of the 17th
century and having characteristics of the
Renaissance-Baroque style. The facade is
quite simple. On the portal lintel there is
an engraved text written in form of abbreviations (I.O.B.C.F.F.C.E.L.E.) and the year
of construction (1656). On both sides of
the rectangular portal there are square
windows with iron bars. Over the portal
there is a small round window and on the
south wall a semi lunar one. Above the
facade there is a simple belfry, shaped
like an arch. Up to the requisition for war
purposes, the belfry contained a small bell
from 1657, richly decorated with images
of St. Anthony, Holy Virgin and the Saints.
On the top of the belfry there is a stone
ball and an iron cross. The church has a
porch - its arches and wooden roof frame
are supported by ten stone columns. Such
porches are very interesting architectural-artistic motifs to be found in front of
Istrian country churches. They originate
from the period between the 14th and
the 19th century, functioning as a prolongation of church space. Those who did
not manage to enter the crowded church
used to stand here, as well as persons
under arms. Here people took shelter from
the heat or rain, and those who were late
and found the town gate closed used to
spend the night in the porch. Also, it was
the place for court trials and business arrangements.
Kirchlein des hl. Anton Vrsar
In der Nähe des alten Tors befindet sich
das Kirchlein des heiligen Anton von Padua aus der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jhs.
in Renaissance-Barock Stil gebaut. Die
Fassade des Kirchleins ist einfach. Über
dem Portal ist die lateinische Abkürzung.

(I.O.B.C.F.F.C.E.L.E.) und das Baujahr 1656 eingemeisselt. Neben
dem viereckigen Portal befinden
sich zwei eckige Fenster mit Gitterwerk. Oberhalb des Portals
ist ein rundes Fenster. Auf der
Südseite ist ein halbmondförmiges Fensterchen. Über der Fassade erhebt sich ein einfacher
Kirchturm mit einem Glockenraum in Arkadenform. Auf dem
Turm hing bis zu seiner Beschlagnahme zu Kriegszwecken eine
kleine reich verzierte (St. Anton,
Mutter Gottes und die Heiligen)
Glocke aus dem Jahre 1657. Auf
der Spitze des Kirchenturms befinden sich eine steinerne Kugel
und ein eisernes Kreuz. Vor der
Kirche ist eine Vorhalle oder Laube (ein bedeckter offener Raum).
Auf zehn runden Säulen ruht
eine Holzdachkonstruktion. Solche Lauben sind sehr interessante Kunst-architektonische Details
vor den istrischen Dorfkirchen,
die in der Zeitspanne vom 14/
15 bis 19. Jh. entstanden sind. In
Wirklichkeit sind solche Vorhallen
die Verlängerung des Kirchenraumes. Während der Messe
standen unter der Laube die
Menschen, die keinen Platz im
Kirchlein fanden oder bewaffnete
Männer. Unter dem Laubendach
fanden die Menschen Schutz vor
Sonne und Regen auch die Menschen, die zu spät kamen und
das Stadtor geschlossen fanden,
übernachteten manchmal dort.
Unter solchen Lauben wurden
auch Gerichtsprozesse abgehalten und verschiedene Geschäfte
vereinbart.
Buzet Earring
The bronze Buzet Earring was predominantly found in northern Istria
between Buzet and the west coast in the early Middle Ages in the
graves of the native as well as the Romanized Illyrian-Celtic people.
In the literature the earring appears in the 7th and 8th centuries. It
has been listed in the Cultural Heritage Register of the Republic of
Croatia since October 1968. A silver replica of the Buzet earring has
been created as an authentic souvenir of Buzet.

Palace of Dajla, Novigrad
In Dajla, at the very seashore, lies a valuable architectural complex, whose harmonious beauty and long,
eventful history attract the attention of both historians and casual passersby. The complex acquired its
present appearance in 1839, after the plans of French architect Le Terrier de Manetot. It is to the origin
of the architect that the palace of Dajla ows its French Neo-classicists appearance, unique in Istria. At
the place of an old square building with towers, known as castrum from time immemorial, an elegant,
rectangular two-storey house was erected, whose front was flanked with two nearly identical buildings.
Respecting the style of the preceding period, De Manetot left intact the Baroque church of St. John the
Baptist (consecrated in 1783), lying to the East of the villa, and constructed a new house of equal external
appearance facing it (the residence of the chaplain). This intentional reflection strongly emphasizes the
symmetry of the main building’s front, and leads through the (once cultivated) garden to the monumental
portal that separates the building complex from the sea like a transparent veil. A small pier shows that
the villa could also be reached from the sea. The described architectural complex from the first half of the
19th century is one of only a few Neoclassicism cultural monuments on the Adriatic coast.

Landhaus in Dajla, Novigrad
Im Ort Dajla liegt am Meeresufer ein wertvoller architektonischer Komplex, der durch seine harmonische
Schönheit und lange, bewegte Geschichte sowohl Fachleute als auch zufällige Passanten anspricht. Sein
heutiges Aussehen erhielt der Komplex 1839, nach Plänen des französischen Architekten Le Terrier de
Manetot. Der Herkunft seines Architekten verdankt das Palais von Dajla sein französisches neoklassizistisches Aussehen, einzigartig in Istrien. An der Stelle des alten, viereckigen Gebäudes mit Türmen an jeder
der Ecken, das von jeher das Kastell genannt wurde, spross ein elegantes, rechteckiges Haus mit zwei
Stockwerken, an der Vorderseite von zwei beinahe identischen Gebäuden flankiert. De Manetot respektierte nämlich die vorhergehende Stilepoche: Die östlich des Kastells liegende, barocke Kirche des heiligen
Johannes des Täufers (eingeweiht 1783) ließ er unberührt und baute ihr gegenüber ein neues, äußerlich
gleich aussehendes Haus (die Wohnung des Kaplans). Die absichtliche spiegelbildliche Gegenüberstellung
betont stark die Symmetrie der Hauptgebäudefront und führt durch den (einst gepflegten) Garten zum
monumentalen Portal, das wie eine durchsichtige Membran den Gebäudekomplex vom Meer teilt. Ein
kleiner Bootssteg zeugt davon, dass die Villa auch vom Meer aus erreicht werden konnte. Das beschriebene Architektonische Ganze aus der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jh. ist eines der seltenen neoklassizistischen
Kulturdenkmäler an der Adriaküste.

Lighthouse of Savudrija
It is situated on the westernmost tip of Croatia.
The architect Pietro Nobile designed it at the
request of the Stock Exchange Deputation from
Trieste (nowadays Chamber of Commerce). Its
building begun in March 1817, was sponsored
by Francis I, emperor of Austria, to whose memory there is an inscription at the base of the
lighthouse. Pietro Nobile was born at Campestro, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, in 1776, and
died in Vienna in 1854. In 1818 he left Trieste
for Vienna, where was appointed head of the
School of Architecture and of the Academy of
Arts. Vienna houses Emperor Francis the First’s
sarcophagus, designed by Nobile. The emperor
held Nobile in high esteem and charged him
with various important projects, for instance
the restoration and stylistic readaptation of the
castle of Mirabell in Salzburg. He tooktrouble
over the restoration and studies of the most significant Roman monuments in Pula and Aquileia. The Public Records Office in Rijeka has in
its keeping a collection of 79 Istrian landscapes
and views that Nobile drew in the 1820s.
Twin Gates and City Walls, Pula
In ancient and medieval times the whole city was
surrounded by walls and was entered through
about ten gates. The walls had become old and unnecessary so they were pulled down at the beginning of the 19th century. Parts of the walls between
the Twin Gates and the Giardini square have been
preserved until today. The Twin Gates, thus called
because of the two arches through which you enter
the inner yard, which was once the entrance to the
city, were constructed between the 2nd and 3rd
centuries. The Twin Gates today lead to the Archaeological Museum and the Castle - Kaštel. Remains,
partly restored, of an octagonal sepulchral structure
- Mausoleum from the 1st - 2nd centuries have
been found opposite the Twin Gates.
Doppeltor und Stadtmauer, Pola
In der Antike- und Mittelalterzeit war die ganze Stadt
mit der Stadtmauer umfassen und der Ein-/Ausgang
war durch die zehn Tore möglich. Die Stadtmauer
wurde baufällig und überflüssig und wurde am An20
fang des 19. Jahrhundert niedergerissen. Einen Teil
der Stadtmauer kann man heute noch zwischen
dem Doppeltor und dem Platz Giardini sehen. Das
Doppeltor, das wegen seiner zwei Bogenöffnungen
durch die man in die Stadt ging, so genannt wurde,
wurde im 2. - 3. Jh. gebaut. Das Doppeltor führt uns
bis zum Archäologischen Museum und bis zur Burg
(Kaštel). Vor dem Doppeltor wurden die Überreste
eines achteckigen Mausoleums aus dem 1. - 2. Jh.
gefunden, die teilweise restauriert sind.
Leuchtturm von Savudrija
Er befindet sich am westlichsten Punkt von
Kroatien. Er wurde vom Architekten Pietro Nobile geplant, im Auftrag des Triester ‘Börsengerichts’, heutige Handelskammer, und unter
dem Schutz von Kaiser Franz I. von Österreich
errichtet, dem eine Inschrift am Sockel gewidmet ist. Mit den Arbeiten wurde im März 1817
begonnen. Pietro Nobile wurde 1776 in Campestro im Schweizer Kanton Tessin geboren
und starb 1854 in Wien. 1818 Übersiedlung
von Triest nach Wien wo er unter anderem
die Architekturschule und die Akademie der
bildenden Künste leitete. In Wien, ist der von
Nobile entworfene Sarkophag Kaiser Franz I. zu
sehen. Nobile wurde von diesem Kaiser hoch
geschätzt, der ihm wichtige Projekte anvertraute, darunter die Renovierung und stilistische
Adaptierung von Schloss Mirabell in Salzburg.
Er setzte sich auch für Renovierung und Studium der wichtigsten römischen Baudenkmäler
von Pula und Aquileia ein. Im Staatsarchiv von
Rijeka werden 79 Landschaften und Ansichten
von Istrien aufbewahrt, die von ihm in den 20er
Jahren des 19. Jh. gezeichnet wurden.

To build a kažun - 30 m³ of
stone
An Istrian kažun (stone hut) is made of local
stone without the use of any binding material.
An average-sized kažun requires up to 30 cubic metres of stone, weighing about 70 tons.
The ground plan, on which the stone walls of a
kažun are erected, is a circle. The roof is constructed in the ‘false dome’ method and covered in stone slates. At the top of each kažun
is a cone-like stone decoration. A kažun was
often built next to existing drystone walls to
save on building material. Although much rarer
than round kažuns, rectangular kažuns, called
kažete, can also be found in Istria’s fields. Similar structures but called by different names
can also be found in Dalmatia, as well as in
other Mediterranean countries. Most were built
in the 19th century by farmers and shepherds
as protection from bad weather and as a place
to keep farm tools and small farm animals.
Für einen „Kažun“ 30 m³ Steine
Lediglich aus istrischem Stein gebaut und ohne
irgendein Bindemittel, das sind die istrischen
„Kažuni“(steinerne Feldhäuschen). Für einen
etwa 70 Tonnen schweren Kažun, durchschnittlicher Größe werden bis zu 30 Kubikmeter
Steine benötigt. Die Steinmauern wurden auf
einem gleichmäßig runden Grundriss errichtet
und das Dach, das sich wie ein „fälschliches
Gewölbe“ zu immer enger werdenden Kreisen
schließt, wurde aus Schieferstein gedeckt. Jeder Kažun besitzt auf seiner Dachspitze seinen
„Pinčuk“, eine kegelförmige Steinverzierung.
Oftmals wurden sie, um Material zu sparen,
gleich neben den bestehenden Trockenmauern errichtet. Abgesehen von den üblichen
runden kann man auf den istrischen Feldern,
auch viereckige Kažuni finden, die so genannten
„Kažete“, jedoch sind diese viel seltener. Ähnliche Bauwerke können in Dalmatien gefunden
werden, jedoch unter unterschiedlichen Namen.
Ähnliche Behausungen sind auch in anderen
Mittelmeerländern typisch. Die meisten von ihnen wurden im 19. Jh. erbaut und dienten den
Bauern und Hirten als Unterschlupf vor Unwetter, als Geräte- und Viehschuppen, meistens für
Kleinvieh.

The town of Pagubice and its surrounding area have proved to possess excellent conditions for growing
grapevines, encouraging renowned Istrian winegrowers to plant new vineyards. In addition to the traditional Malvasia and Teran grapes, also grown are Chardonnay and Merlot grape varieties, making this area
increasingly attractive to all wine lovers. Good traditional music and good wine will lure you to the heart
of Istria, to the slopes of St. Anthony’s Hill near Butoniga Lake. Lore has it that the town was founded by
ancient settlers from Pag Island. Today it is a meeting place for musicians who play traditional music. A
festival is held every year to celebrate the Feast of St. Anthony, inviting musicians from all parts of Istria
to praise, through music and song, a local composer and lyric writer called Nadalino. If you are interested
in traditional music played on a wide variety of instruments, or if you are looking for good wine and entertainment, the Feast of St. Anthony in Pagubice is the place to be.
Es ist bewiesen dass Pagubice und seine Umgebung ideale Bedingungen für den Anbau von Weinreben
besitzen. Genau diese günstigen Bedingungen haben die istrischen Winzer dazu gebracht in dieser Gegend
neue Weinanbauplantagen zu errichten. Neben dem traditionellen Malvasier und Teran werden auch die
Sorten Chadonanay und Merlot angebaut. Dank dieser Winzer wird diese Gegend für die Liebhaber von
gutem Wein immer attraktiver. Gute traditionelle Musik und guter Wein wird Sie in das Herz von Istrien, an
die Hänge entlang des Sees Butoniga unter den Hügel des heiligen Antonius locken. Der märchenhafte
Ort, welcher der Überlieferung nach, von alten Siedlern von der Insel Pag gegründet wurde, ist heute ein
Treffpunkt für Musiker traditioneller Musikinstrumente. Das Treffen findet jedes Jahr anlässlich des Volksfestes zu Ehren des hl. Antonius statt und wird von vielen Musikern aus allen Teilen der Halbinsel Istrien
besucht, um mit Gesang den dortigen Komponisten und Texter Nadalina zu feiern. Alle Liebhaber von
traditioneller Musik mit unterschiedlichsten Instrumenten, sowie alle Wein- und Unterhaltungsliebhaber

The lug sail of the batana is square. It used to be made of robust
cotton fabric and then painted.
The surface and the weight of the
sail depended on the size of the
batana. At first, the sail used to
be painted for impregnation and
longer durability. In time, the
painting became a sign of recognition, denoting the individuality and the identity of the owner.
Each family had its sign painted
on the sail by which its mambers
and other people could recognize the boat from far away on the
sea. So far, the sails of over 95
families of Rovinj have been iden24

tified. Painted motifs were mostly
geometric shapes, while figurative images, writing, numbers, and
symbols were less frequent. The
most frequently used colors were
yellow, red, and green. Around
1930. there were as many as fiftytwo batanas with painted sails in
the post of Rovinj. Since the end
of the 1960s, not a single batana
in the port has had a sail.
Das Hauptsegel der Batana hat
eine viereckige Form. Es wurde
aus Baumwollstoff genäht und
dann bemalt. Die Segelfläche und
das Segelgewicht waren von der
Größe der Batana abhängig und
die Bemalung der Segel diente
zuerst zur Imprägnierung und
zur Verlängerung der Haltbarkeit,
wurde dann aber mit der Zeit zu
einem Erkennungszeichen und
unterstrich die Individualität und
Identität des Besitzers. Jede Familie besaß auf dem Segel sein
eigenes gemaltes Zeichen, so
dass die Familienmitglieder aber
auch alle anderen, das kleine
Fischerholzboot und seinen Besitzer aus der Ferne auf See erkennen konnten.
A story of
local speech
Geschichte über den
lokalen Dialekt
Funtana
The little town of Funtana holds
a special place on the map of
Istrian dialects, being the only
enclave of the western Istian
coast where people speak cakavica, a variety of the chakavian
dialect more typical of the Labin
area and faraway islands of the
Adriatic. Although the phenomenon is more than interesting, cakavica of Funtana is not yet adequately researched. Still, some
years ago a pioneering step was
made towards its recognition - a
young Swede Alexander Selman
compiled a dictionary of cakavica of Funtana, publishing it in
2006. The fact that the dictionary came from abroad can seem
unusual only at first glance, for
the author’s mother was born in
Funtana, moving to Sweden with
her parents long ago. Growing
abroad, the author managed to
preserve the old speech of Funtana in its purest form. With his
mother and grandparents he only
spoke cakavica, and as he was
educated in Swedish schools,
he wasn’t exposed to the standard Croatian language, which
might have interfered with his
superb knowledge of cakavica.

einem überaus interessanten
sprachlichen Phänomen ist, so
ist die „Cakavica“ von Funtana
noch unvollständig erforscht.
Dennoch ist seit einigen Jahren
ein bedeutender Schritt in ihrer
Affirmation zu verzeichnen. Ob
Sie es glauben oder nicht, diesen
Schritt machte ein junger Schwede namens Alexander Selman-er
verfasste und veröffentlichte im
Jahr 2006 ein Wörterbuch der
Funtaner Mundart. Das dieses
Wörterbuch der lokalen Sprache
aus dem Ausland kommt und das
noch aus dem weit entfernten
Schweden scheint nur im ersten
Moment ungewöhnlich. Denn der
Autor hat seine Wurzeln in Funtana und während er in der Fremde
aufgewachsen ist, gelang es ihm
die Funtaner Sprache in seiner
reinsten Form zu bewahren. Mit
seiner Mutter sprach er nur auf
tschakawisch und da er in Schweden zur Schule ging, war er
der Hauptsprache Kroatisch nicht
ausgesetzt und so kam es zu
keiner Vermischung mit seinen
hervorragenden Kenntnissen der
alten Sprache aus Funtana.

Draguć, your curiosity will surely keep you there. Draguć is the
traditional site of double-bassists
who meet every year at the June
International Double-bass Festival to demonstrate their talent
and virtuosity. During the event,
the town square resounds with
the sounds of double-basses played to the rhythm of the waltz
and polka, accompanied by accordions, trumpets, clarinets, violins, harmonicas and even haircombs. Performances last until
twilight, when the event ends
with a joint performance of all

participants. Festivities with music and dancing continue deep
into the warm summer night.

gesamte Stadtplatz ist in diesem Zeitraum von den Klängen
der Kontrabassisten und ihrem
Walzer- oder Polkarhythmus erfüllt. Begleitet werden sie von
Akkordeon, Trompete, Klarinette,
Violine, Mundharmonika oder
sogar Kämmen, zur zusätzlichen
Verzierung, mit denen die Spieler ihre Fertigkeit und Virtuosität
zeigen. Die zahlreichen musikalischen Darbietungen enden mit
einer gemeinsamen Aufführung
aller Teilnehmer und dauern bis
zum Einbruch der Dunkelheit mit
anschließendem musikalischem
Fest bis tief in die warme Sommernacht hinein.
St. John’s bonfires
Johannisfeuer
In the past, bonfires burned
across Istria to celebrate St. John’s Day (Midsummer Day). At
sundown, before returning to
their homes, farmers would set
fire to bonfires made alongside
plow-fields, pastures and vineyards. When night had fallen,
they would light bonfires built
around the village. Once linked
to superstition and warding off

celebrated today. The tradition
is tied to the summer solstice.
Observed by all Slavic peoples, it
originated from a Sun and Fire Cult. In Istria, St.
John’s bonfires have been a tradition since the
Christianisation of the Slavs and are lit on June
24, the Day of St. John.
Die Sonnenwendfeuer oder Lagerfeuer flackerten
schon in der Vergangenheit zu Sommerbeginn
am Johannistag in ganz Istrien und wurden an
sichtbaren Stellen, am Rande von Ackerflächen,
Wiesen und Weinbergen bei Sonnenuntergang
angezündet und dies meist vor dem Nachhausegehen der Bauern. Bei Anbruch der Nacht
wurden die Sonnenwendfeuer neben dem Dorf
angezündet. Dieses berühmteste Treffen rund
um das Feuer wird auch heute noch gefeiert
und wurde einst mit Aberglauben, Magie und
dem Ritual der Vertreibung von bösen Geistern
in Verbindung gebracht. Das Sonnenwendfeuer
trägt den Namen des Brauches der im Zusammenhang mit der Sommersonnenwende, den
Beginn der Sonnenwende bestimmt. Der Brauch
Sonnenwendfeuer zu entzünden, verbindet alle
slawischen Völker und stammt aus dem Sonnenund Feuerkult. In Istrien sind die Johannisfeuer
ein traditioneller Akt seit der Taufe der Slawen
und wird am Feiertag des hl. Johannes am 24.
Juni gefeiert.

The season of the wine events in Poreč continues
throughout June. In the first weekend of the month,
there will already be a great tent in the city port,
offering the best malvazija that can be tasted in
Istria at the moment. The malvazija festival will gather around 40 wine makers for three days, in order
to offer the visitors in Poreč and its surroundings
the most famous Istrian sort of white wine, which
is also recognised at the international level. The
three-day event will last from noon to late hours
and this is an excellent opportunity for a trip through the variable offer of the queen of the Istrian
wines. Every malvazija is different from the others;
it brings new thrills and opens the new wine horizons. Therefore, the numerous wine aficionados,
experts, journalist and other guests will gather at
this event to honour malvazija. Stay in a decent
atmosphere, with appropriate music and gourmet
corner and use the opportunity where the superior

Die Saison der Weinveranstaltungen in Poreč wird

zu bringen. Die Veranstaltung wird an allen 3 Tagen von Mittag bis in die späten Abendstunden
dauern und ist eine ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit

ist anders als die anderen, bringt neue Genüsse

The gastronomic manifestation celebrating scallops as well as other shellfish and seafood, promoting Novigrad as an important gastronomic
destination with specific gastronomic specialties.
The Novigrad scallop which, according to many,
is the best in the world, definitely belongs to this
group. The programme will take place in the town
harbour, the so called Mandrač, and the offer of
dishes with scallop and other shellfish at symbolic
prices will be spread over a several dozen meters
long table along Mandrač. The offer will include
the specialties made by numerous Novigrad’s restaurants and taverns, winemakers, olive growers,
souvenir manufacturers..., within the programme
there will be show-cooking of several dishes from
scallops. The manifestation will of course include
appropriate music and animation programme,
with traditional music, funny games, children’s
corner with animation, etc. During ‘the scallop
weekend’ caterers will provide a special offer of
dishes based on this shellfish. By this gourmet
manifestation Novigrad marks the beginning of
the tourist season.

autochtone Rohschinken in der
Gastronomie
Istriens ein ho-
chwertiger Produkt, worauf jeder Istrier stolz ist. Die Merkmale
des istrischen Rohschinkens weisen darauf hin, dass sich dieser
Schinken von den zahlreichen anderen Schinkentypen, die in der
Welt hergestellt werden, deutlich
unterscheidet. Man begegnet
sich hier mit einer Handwerkstradition der Schweinkeuleverarbeitung, als noch man auf den Bauernhöfen grössere Mengen von
Fettgewebe benötigte, das ins
Schweineschmalz überging, welches man später beim Kochen
verwendete. Die verarbeiteten
Schweinkeulen werden trocken
gepöckelt, und ausschliesslich in
Meersalz oder in Naturgewürzen
Motovun, a picturesque medieval town built on top of a cone-shaped hill with a flat
plateau, is a town of urban lines originating
from a prehistoric hill-fort. The information
on its population dates back to the ancient
times, more precisely, the end of the 2nd
and the beginning of the 3rd century, which
is evidenced by the inscriptions beside the
Venetian heraldic and leonidic symbols
of the interior mantle on the ground-floor
of the Renaissance fort. According to the
inscriptions found on the property of the
Roman senator Sissena, it was exactly at
Lorun and Červar that the said family had
the centre for the production of Istrian olive
oil that they sold all over the Roman Empire,
while in the surroundings of Motovun they
extracted clay for the mass production of
amphorae.
Motovun, eine pittoreske mittelalterliche
Stadt erbaut auf einem kegelförmigen Hügel
mit einem geebnetem Plateau und urbanen Linien, die aus prähistorischen Bauten
hervorgegangen ist. Die Angaben über Besiedlung datieren bereits aus der antiken
Zeit, genauer vom Ende des 2. und vom
Beginn des 3. Jh. wovon die Überschriften,
die neben der venezianischen Heraldik
und Leonidik auf dem inneren Umhang im
Inneren des Renaissancenturms zeugen.
Entsprechend den Anführungen auf dem
Besitz der römischen Senatorfamilie Sissena besaß diese genau bei Lorun und Červar
ein Zentrum zur Produktion des istrischen
Olivenöls, das in alle Teile des Römischen
Reiches ausgeführt wurde, wobei in der
Umgebung von Motovun Lehm für die Produktion von Amphoren abgebaut wurde.

The trail starts in Brtonigla, and after a
20-minute walk you will reach a hill called
Žmergo, surrounded by fields. The hilltop
affords a view of vineyards and olive groves all the way to the sea. In 1936, a small
structure was erected on the hill. Villagers
call it the old waterworks, and it is still used
in water supply. From here, the trail will
take you to the Škarline Nature Park, a hidden gem of the region, with small lakes and
a stream that has carved a true canyon
on its course to the Mirna River. After leaving the park, the trail becomes a dirt road
taking you back to Brtonigla. Walking the
trail takes up to two hours, depending on
your pace. This undemanding trail keeps to
macadam tracks and field routes through
vineyards; only a short section of the trail
is paved. The trail has easy-to-follow signs
that are maintained by the Eco Association ‘Nature’s Friends’.Der Weg beginnt in
Brtonigla, wo Sie nach einem 20-minütigen
Spaziergang einen Hügel und umliegenden
Felder erreichen, welche die Einheimischen
Žmergo nennen. Die Aussicht von hier
reicht über die Weinberge und Olivenhaine bis zum Meer. Am Žmergo befindet sich

und es wird immer noch zur Wasserversorgung genutzt. Der Weg führt weiter in
Richtung Naturpark Škarline, einem unentdeckten Juwel dieser Gegend, mit kleinen
Seen und einem kleinen Bächen, der auf
dem Weg zum Fluss Mirna einen wahren
Canyon eingekerbt hat. Von Škarlina führt
die Wanderroute des hl. Zenon auf einer
unbefestigten Straße zurück nach Brtonigla. Je nach Tempo dauert die Wanderung
etwa zwei Stunden.
Die Route ist gut zugänglich und führt auf
einem Abschnitt auf Schotter- und Feldwegen zwischen Weinbergen entlang und ist
nur zu einem kleinen Teil asphaltiert. Der
Weg ist dank des örtlichen Öko-Vereins
„Freunde der Natur“ gut gekennzeichnet
und die Signalisierung wird regelmäßig instand gehalten.

through a thick forest of typical
littoral beech. It features tended

the brave inhabitants of Skitača

over the Turks after intercepting
one of their boats near Crna
Punta in the year 1661. You can

weak eyesight come to this place. Just to arouse your curiosity,
at a distance of only 1 km from
the well-equipped Mountain hut
Skitača there is a unique rock
from which the healing water
springs, the so called “tears of St
Lucia” which, as the legend has
it, can cure weak eyesight and
eye problems. Take our advice:
try it! Whether you believe in the
legend of the tears of St Lucia or
not, one thing is for sure, when
you stay on this rock your eyes
can see as far as neighbouring
Italy! Take the road to Ravni, a
seaside resort with magnificent
beaches where you can rest for
a while and swim, or just admire
surfers who frequently exhibit
their skills in this area. Continuing to Drenje through the village
called Crni the trail brings you at
the starting point, to the upper
part of Labin.

Vista bestens geeignet. Vom Stadtteil Gornji Labin
geht es in Richtung Kranjci. Ein Schotterweg führt
durch Gora Glušići nach Skitača, wo die Route ihrem Namen mehr als nur gerecht wird: auf dem
Hochplateau, dem höchsten Erhebung im Gebietes
um Labin, bietet sich ein einmaliger Ausblick auf die
Kvarner Bucht und lässt bei klarer Sicht sogar die
Konturen Venedigs erkennen. Und wer sich bei den
Einheimischen ein wenig umhört, kommt vielleicht
noch in den Genuss heldenhafter Geschichten, in
denen tapfere Einwohner von Skitaca die Türken
im Jahr 1661 bei Crna Punta besiegten. Und wie
war das mit der neuen Sichtweise? So: Etwa 1 km
von der Berghütte Skitača entfernt, sprudelt aus
einem Felsen Heilwasser hervor. Die so genannten
‚Tränen der Hl. Lucija’ sollen Sehschwäche heilen
und Augenprobleme lindern und sind immer wieder das Ziel von Pilgern. Unser Tipp: einfach ausprobieren! Ganz gleich, ob man an das Wunder
glaubt oder nicht, genießt das Auge vom Standort
der Heilquelle eine herrliche Fernsicht bis nach Italien. Weiter geht es, bergab in den Ferienort Ravni,
dessen idyllische Strände in den Sommermonaten
zum Baden verführen und von denen man nicht
selten die waghalsigsten Surfer beobachten kann.
Nach der Fahrt durch die Orte Drenj und Crni und
stoßen Sie wieder auf den Weg zum Ortsteil Gornji
Labin, wo die Fahrt begann.

The Arena in Pula is the sixth
biggest edifice among the similar
preserved buildings in the world,
and it could have accepted approximately 23 000 viewers. In
the Roman Empire, such buildings were erected for entertainment in watching the cruel
gladiator games and fighting with
wild beasts. The bought gladiators were usually criminals, war
prisoners and slaves trained for
fights whose only purpose was
to amuse the audience, not to
beat the enemy right away. The
entrance of the gladiators was a
magnificent show of golden armour, cloaks with a colour that
resembled red wine and the fourhorse carriage decorated with
pheasant plumage, accompa36
nied by the sounds of trumpets.
Their look, with metal armour
and the helmets at their heads,
was intimidating, and in that way
they celebrated the power and
the fearless appearance. When a
gladiator proved himself by multiple victories, he could gain the
wooden sword of freedom. Such
gladiators enjoyed a great fame
by the emperors and the people.
They could either continue fighting or train the new gladiators.

Im römischen Reich wurden diese Bauwerke für den Zeitvertreib

wilden Tieren errichtet. Die gekauften Gladiatoren waren meist
Kriminelle, Kriegsgefangenen und
Sklaven und wurden für den Kampf hinausgeschickt um das Publikum zu unterhalten und nicht um
den Gegner sofort zu überwinden. Der Einzug der Gladiatoren
in die Arena bot eine großartige Vorstellung goldfarbener
Ausrüstungen, weinrotfarbiger
Umhänge und mit Pfauenfedern
geschmückter Viergespänner, die
vom Klang der Trompeten begleitet wurden. Mit ihrem Aussehen,
den Metallrüstungen und Helmen
auf dem Kopf, wirkten sie Angst
einflössend, prahlten mit Ihrer
Kraft und vermittelten das Gefühl von Furchtlosigkeit. Sobald
sich der Gladiator als mehrfache
Siege erwies, konnte er sich das
hölzerne Schwert der Freiheit
verdienen. Solche Gladiatoren genossen großen Ruhm beim Kaiser
und beim Volk. Sie durften weiter
kämpfen oder neue Gladiatoren
unterrichten.
