When the esteemed American Wine Enthusiast, with its 35 year long experience of
where wine lives, ranks you among top ten
wine tourist destinations in 2015 along with
regions such as the Italian Piedmont, Spanish Galicia or French Loire and Rhône, then
all the wine producers from the region - Istria in this case - have a big reason to celebrate. And, not only them! Wine should never be viewed without food. A glass of good
wine is a natural ending of every good meal.
The most exciting wine destinations are
therefore locations offering excellent wines
to accompany superb dishes: All is played
out in glittering restaurant, rustic taverns or
original farm households located in magnificent landscape. It is nice to be recognized by

oder französische Loire und Rhône, dann haben alle
Weinbauern aus diesen Regionen - in unserem Fall
Istrien - einen großen Grund zum Feiern. Aber nicht
nur sie! Den Wein sollte man fast nie von den dazu
gehörenden Gerichte trennen. Ein Glas guten Weines
ist ein natürlicher Abschluss jeder Mahlzeit. Deshalb
sind die spannendsten Weindestinationen eben jene,

It is an exceptional pleasure to start 2015 with
excellent news from the USA - Istria has been
ranked among TOP TEN wine destinations in
2015 according to Wine Enthusiast. Wine Enthusiast, established back in 1979, is a world leader
for wines, publishing hundreds of wine reviews
in its each edition and with more than 300 million printed catalogues. Its web pages make the
Wine Enthusiast content available worldwide. In
view of all the above said, this is clearly a perfect opportunity for the promotion of Istria. This
flattering recognition has been awarded by Mike
DeSimone and Jeff Jensenn. The two known as
the World Wine Guys have visited Istria three
times so far, the last time in July 2013. During
their stays on the Istrian peninsula, they were
given an opportunity to learn about Istrian indigenous wine varieties and wines such as malvasia, teran, merlot and others. They also provide
advice as to where to stay and what to visit as
well as where to taste the best wines. They are
responsible for positioning Istria on the very top
of the already established world wine regions
including Piedmont in Italy, the Loire and Rhône
Valleys in France, the American Mendocino. The
best ranked also includes Orlando and the Finger
Lakes in the USA, Hawkes Bay in New Zealand,
Galicia in Spain and the Okanagan in Canada.

Voller Freude beginnen wir das Jahr 2015 mit phantastischen Nachrichten, die aus den USA kommen Istrien gehört nun zu den TOP 10 Weindestinationen
für 2015, und zwar nach der Selektion von Wine Enthusiast. Wine Enthusiast wurde noch 1979 gegründet, und ist der internationale Leader für Weine, mit
hunderten von Rezensionen in jeder Ausgabe, und
mit mehr als 300 Millionen gedruckter Kataloge.
Wine Enthusiast ist mit seinen Internetseiten in aller
Welt gegenwärtig, und wenn man all das in Betracht
zieht, so ist es klar, dass dies eine perfekte Chance
ist, Istrien zu promovieren. Diese schmeichelhafte
Anerkennung kommt von Mike DeSimone und Jeff
Jensenn. Die beiden sind auch als World Wine Guys
bekannt, und haben Istrien schon drei Mal besucht,
das letzte Mal im Juli 2013. Während ihres Aufenthalts
auf der istrischen Halbinsel hatten sie die Gelegenheit, istrische autochthone Sorten und Weine wie
malvazija, teran, merlot und andere kennenzulernen.
Auch raten sie ihren Lesern, wo man unterkommen
kann, was sehenswert ist, und wo man die besten
Weine degustiert. Gerade ihnen ist es zu verdanken,
dass Istrien nun an der Spitze, zusammen mit anderen, schon etablierten Regionen wie Piemont in Italien, das Tal der Loire und Rhône in Frankreich und
dem amerikanischen Mendocino steht. Auf der Liste
der Besten befinden sich noch Orlando und Finger Lakes in den USA, Hawkes Bay in Neuseeland, Galizien
in Spanien und Okanagana in Kanada.

Every year Istrian wine cellars
play their part in World Wine
Day which is celebrated on the
last Sunday in May in many regions of the world. This year on
31 May, together with thousands
of wine cellars across the world,
some one hundred Istrian wine
cellars will follow suit and open
their doors to inquisitive visitors,
to connoisseurs of fine wine and
to those who are yet to become
wine lovers. From 10 a.m. to 7
p.m. on Open Wine-cellar Day,
guests are invited to visit modern wineries, wine tasting rooms
and family-owned farms where
hospitable hosts await them.
This is not only a great opportunity for wine tasting and having
pleasant conversations about
wine with the host but also a
chance to buy a bottle of superior-quality wine. The Wine Day
project was initially launched in
the Italian region of Tuscany in
the mid-1990s as a new way of
promoting wine in tourism purposes. Istria joined the project as
early as 1999 and the first time
the event was held some 800
guests visited 37 winemakers.
Today, Open Wine-cellar Day
has developed into an eagerly
awaited one-day festival of wine
culture in Istria.
Der Tourismusverband Istrien
organisiert jedes Jahr gemeinsam mit den istrischen Weinkellern den „Weintag“ der in vielen
Teilen der Welt am letzten Sonntag im Monat Mai gefeiert wird.
So werden am Sonntag, den 31.
Mai fast hundert bekannte Winzer aus ganz Istrien neugierigen
Besuchern, Weinliebhabern sowie denen, die das erst werden,
die Türe ihrer Keller öffnen und
dies also zur gleichen Zeit wie
tausende Weinkeller in der ganzen Welt. Am „Tag der offenen
Weinkeller“ können die Gäste
von 10 bis 19 Uhr einen Blick
auf die modernen Kellereien,
Weinstuben und Familienbetriebe werfen und werden dort von
den freundlichen Gastgebern erwartet. Eine ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit für die Verkostung der
besten istrischen Weine und einem angenehmen Gespräch mit
den Einheimischen aber auch für
den Kauf von istrischen Spitzenweinen. Das Projekt „Weintag“
wurde Mitte der 90er Jahre unter
der Schirmherrschaft der Winzer aus der italienischen Region
Toskana, als eine neue Form der
Förderung des Wein-Tourismus
vorgestellt und verwandelte sich
bis heute in eine wirklich globale
Bewegung. Istrien schloss sich
bereits 1999 dem Projekt Wineday mit 37 Winzern und etwa
800 Besuchern an. Bis heute
entwickelte sich der „Tag der
offenen Weinkeller“ in Istrien zu
einem bedeutenden eintägigen
Festival zu Ehren der Weinkultur.

The Path of Magical Muscat

Istria, the Croatian largest peninsula, is
based on four types of soil together resulting
in this region’s unique prize possession. Brtonigla, or Little Istria as they call it, lies in the
heart of its north-west part.This small town,
located on vineyard covered hilltops, is the
meeting point of the four Istrian soils - white,
gray, black and red. White Istria and its rocky
ground descend from the Učka and Ćićarija
mountain slopes. The gray flysch area of central Istria is made of marlstone, sandstone
and softer limestone, while the black soil is
the most fertile one, abundant with humus.
The red terra rossa soil is of special red and
brownish-red colour or yellow and red colour. The ultimate queen, as they call it here,
of these arable fields is the Istrian Malvasia.
According to some sources, the Malvasia variety is at least 2 thousand years old with as
many as 30 varieties known all around the
Mediterranean. If you come to Istria, make
sure you try the Istrian Malvasia, our pride
and joy. However, if you come to Brtonigla,
try something completely different: we will
let you in on all its secrets, the secrets of the
four soil wine. All qualities of the harmonic
and balanced wines additionally intertwine
in the Istrian Malvasia from Brtonigla thanks
to its special four soil feature. Malvasia has a
special place even in the legend of this small
town - the three princesses carried salt, oil
and grapes, but it was the queen who carried Malvasia!

Eine Sorte, vier Bodenarten,
eine Fülle an Erlebnissen Brtonigla
Istrien, die größte kroatische Halbinsel, ist mit 4 Bodenarten versehen, die sich in ein einzigartiges Reichtum dieser
Region zusammenfügen. Im Herzen des nordwestlichen
Istriens befindet sich Brtonigla - Istrien in Kleinformat! In
diesem Städtchen verbinden sich auf den mit Weingärten
bedeckten Bergabhängen 4 istrische Bodenarten - weiße,
graue, schwarze und rote Erde. Von den Abhängen der
Bergmassive Učka und Ćićarija setzt sich das weiße Istrien
mit seinem steinigen Boden herab. Das graue Flyschgebiet
im zentralen Istrien besteht aus Mergel, Sandstein und weichem Kalkstein, während schwarze Erde am fruchtbarsten
und reich an Humus ist. Rote Erde, die sogenannte terra
rossa, hat eine besondere rot-braunrote oder gelbrote Farbe. Istrische Malvasia ist in diesem Nährbodengebiet die
unangefochtene Königin, wie sie manchmal genannt wird.
Laut Quellen ist die Sorte Malvasia mindestens 2 Tausend
Jahre alt und bis heute wurden dreißig Sorten entlang
des Mittelmeerraumes beschrieben. Sollten Sie einmal
die Gelegenheit haben Istrien zu besuchen, dann kosten
Sie unbedingt die istrische Malvasia, eine Weinsorte mit
außerordentlichem Charakter, unsere stolze Schönheit.

Gelegenheit, etwas ganz anderes zu erfahren: hier verraten
wir Ihnen all die Geheimnisse einer Weinsorte, die aus 4
Bodenarten „Vier Bodenarten - Quattro terre“ hergestellt
wird.Alle Qualitäten harmonischer und ausgeglichener
Weinen kommen in der Istrischen Malvasia aus Brtonigla
durch die Besonderheit der 4 Bodenarten „Vier Bodenarten - Quattro terre“ besonders zum Vorschein. Genau aus
diesem Grunde hat Malvasia sich einen besonderen Platz
in einer Legende über diese Stadt verdient - Salz, Öl und
Trauben wurden von allen dreien Prinzessinnen getragen,

train towards the vineyards will

rience of wine tasting and round

which guests will learn about
Istria and wine. Take the Parenzana Train tour of muscat, it will

Preseason in Istria packed
with major music events
Although Istria has been known for its
numerous summer music events for a
number of years, its status as an entertainment region starts in preseason. This
statement is supported by events taking
place in April and May, such as the Pula
Seasplash Underground Edition parties
organized in underground tunnels of Pula
(30/04, 02/05), the Big Spring Break in
Kanegra near Umag (30/04 - 03/05), the
Lighthouse Festival of electronic underground music on the Lanterna peninsula
in Tar (29/05 - 31/05).
Hot party season in Umag continues in
early June with Spring Break Europe and
afterparty games, entertainment, swimming pool parties, competitions, water
sports (04/06 - 07/06).
The Rovinj Jazz Festival and its three superb concerts will take place in May and
July, a great music events, will satisfy
even the most demanding fans of this
music style and outstanding music (David Murray, 22/05). June introduces the
Tear it up!Rockabilly Festival in Medulin
(04/06 - 08/06) gathering ‘50s fans by
cheerful rock music and beautiful oldtimers, all-day programmes and visitors
arriving from another time.
Party Never Ends - the party in Istria really never stops. The playful preseason and
a hot season is followed by an autumn
filled with outstanding festivals: the Outlook and Dimensions Festival in Pula, the
Unknown Festival in Rovinj...

In der Vorsaison finden in Istrien zahlreiche Musikevents statt
Schon seit vielen Jahren ist Istrien für seine zahlreichen Musikevents bekannt, die
im Sommer stattfinden, doch der Status Istriens als Freizeit- und Unterhaltungsregion beginnt bereits in der Vorsaison. Davon
zeugen die Events, die schon im April und
Mai über die Bühne laufen, wie Pula Seasplash Underground Edition Partys (30/04,
02/05), die in Pulas unterirdischen Tunnels organisiert werden, ferner Big Spring
Break in Kanegra, Lighthouse Festival der
elektronischen Underground Musik auf der

anspruchsvolle Liebhaber dieser Musikrichtung und tolle Musik zufriedenstellen.
Am Übergang vom Mai zum Juni erleben
wir das Tear it up!Rockabilly festival (04/06
- 08/06), das in Medulin die Liebhaber der
50-ger Jahre mit fröhlicher Rockmusik und
wunderschönen Oldtimern versammelt,
mit ganztägigen Programmen für Besucher, die aus einer ganz anderen Zeit zu
kommen scheinen.
Party Never Ends - endet auch die Party in
Istrien wirklich nie, denn nach einer verspielten Vorsaison und heißer Sommersaison folgt ein Herbst mit vielen Spitzenfestivals: Outlook und Dimensions Festival in
Pula, Unknown Festival in Rovinj...

This festival of audio-visual art attracts great attention
foremost because of its unusual theme. New technologies present and promote novel and less known
visual expressions, such as 3D Projection Mapping on
historical buildings, lighting designs, and light exhibitions, performances and installations. Most of the 3D
Projection Mapping takes place at the Forum in Pula
in the late evening hours. In 2014 the festival fascinated visitors with a new attraction - Lighting Giants
- featuring illuminated cranes in the Pula shipyard.
Festival Visualia is one of Pula’s project platforms and
has become a partner of the prestigious Connecting
Cities Network (CCN). Come to the festival and experience spectacular and out-of-this-world audio-visual
effects. Das Festival der audiovisuellen Kunst zieht vorallem wegen seiner ungewöhnlichen Thematik eine
Menge Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Neue Technologien
in einer attraktiven Art präsentieren und fördern neue
und wenig bekannte visuelle Ausdrücke wie z.B. das
3D-Mapping auf historischen Gebäuden, Lichtdesign,
Lichtausstellungen, Performances und Installationen
und versucht dadurch, diese den Besuchern näher
zu bringen. Die meisten der großen 3D-Mappings
finden in den späten Abendstunden auf dem Forum
von Pula statt. Im Jahr 2014 brachte das Festival eines
der größten Attraktionen hervor: Die Leuchtenden
Giganten an der Uferpromenade, beleuchtete Kräne
der Werft von Pula. Das Festival Visualia ist eines der
Projektplattformen der Stadt Pula und wurde Partner
der weltweit renommierten Städtenetze Connecting
Cities Network (CCN). Alle, diejenigen, die sich in Pula
im Rahmen des Festivals befinden, können hier spektakuläre und surreal audiovisuelle Effekte erleben.

The world volleyball elite are coming to Istria! Poreč
is the first of three tournaments in the Major Series
which is part of the FIVB World Tour Calendar for 2015
and this is where the second round of qualifications for
the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016 begins. The
central grounds will be set up in Peškera Cove, right by
the sea, with a view of the old town core and the Euphrasian Basilica. Exciting duels on the sand will also
be held on auxiliary grounds at Zelena Laguna resort
and in the Borik recreational zone. Although beach volleyball is an exceptionally dynamic sport and is said to
be one of the most appealing, the Poreč Major Series
offers more than just sports. During the five-day of the
tournament, great entertainment, with dancers and DJ
performances, will turn Poreč into the epicentre of an

der attraktivsten Sportarten überhaupt. Die Major Series in Poreč werden seinen Besuchern aber mehr als
nur Sport bieten. Während der fünf Turnier-Tage werden zusätzliche Unterhaltung, Auftritte von Tänzern
und DJs das wunderschöne Städtchen Poreč in ein

Kamenjak is the ideal place for recreational and
professional cycling, but don’t simply take our
word for it, found out for your self! Take part in the
Kamenjak Rocky Trail bike race, divided into two
parts. The XCO (4 km) circuit trail race with three
categories, takes place on Saturday, while the XCM
takes place on Sunday. It starts in Premantura and
works its way through the entire Lower and Upper
Kamenjak. There are two versions of the race; one
is recreational (40 km) while the other is for professional cyclists (60 km). The Trail Race also takes
place on the same day on a part of the same trail.
The Medulin region and its breath-taking landscape, together with numerous opportunities for
outdoor activities, make it an attractive year-round

Start in Premantura und führt durch den gesamten
Naturpark Kamenjak. Es stehen zwei unterschiedliche Streckenvarianten zur Verfügung - für Amateure (40 km) und für Spitzenfahrer (60 km). Auf der
gleichen Teilstrecke findet am selben Tag auch das
Trail-Rennen statt. Das Gebiet von Medulin und seine beeindruckenden Naturschönheiten sowie die
zahlreichen Möglichkeiten für Outdoor-Aktivitäten
machen Medulin und seine Umgebung zu einem
attraktiven Ganzjahresziel für den Sporttourismus.

Castle of Petrapilosa
“The overgrown Town” is history full of legends
and oral traditions. The castle served for the
surveillance of the valley of the River Mirna and
the central Istria for the Aquileian patriarchs in
the Middle Ages and for the Venetians in the
15th century. Petrapilosa Castle lies 6 km west
of Buzet, close to the road along the Mirna river in the direction of Livade or Motovun. This
medieval castle is situated on a high cliff that
dominates the entire area of the Braèana river.
For centuries it held an excellent military and
defensive position from which all movements
through the field or along the road could be
controlled. The fortification Ruin was first mentioned in written documents as early as the
10th century. Mass was celebrated for the last
time in the castle chapel of St. Mary Magdalene
in 1793, even though the entire complex had
been abandoned long before. After the restoration work began in the chapel in 1999, numerous remains of medieval frescoes have been
found. Today they are displayed in the Regional
Museum in Buzet.

Kaštel Petrapilosa Kaštel Petrapilosa befindet
sich 6 Kilometer westlich von Buzet, in der Nähe der

Motovun führt. Der Kastell diente zur Überwachung des
ganzen Tals des Flusses Mirna und zwar während der
Zeit der aquileischen Patriarchen im Mittelalter und der
Venezianern im XV. Jahrhundert. Die ersten schriftlichen Quellen erwähnen die Festung „Ruin“, schon im X.
Jahrhundert. Von da an bis zum XIII. Jahrhundert wechselten sich in Istrien die Perioden anhaltendes Machtkampfes für Erbrechte zwischen germanischen feudalen Familien sowie von aquileischen und gradensischen
Patriarchen. Der Patriarch von Aquilea übernahm den
Kastell im Jahr 1208 und hielt ihn in seinem Besitz bis
zum Jahr 1420, bis er von Venedig übernommen wurde.
Der Name des Feudalen Vulingius de Petrapilos als eines Vasallen von Aquileia wurde zum ersten Mal in einer
Aufzeichnung aus 1210 erwähnt. Der Kastell überlebte
bis zum Ende des XVIII. Jahrhunderts, obwohl er nach
einigen Quellen im zweiten Jahrzehnten des XVII. Jahrhunderts verbrannt wurde. Kirche der Hl. Maria Magdalena innerhalb des Kastells Petrapilosa blieb in Betrieb
bis zum Jahr 1793., obwohl das Leben in der Festung
zuvor erloschen war. In der Kirche wurden nach dem
beginn der Renovierung im Jahr 1999 zahlreiche Überreste von mittelalterlichen Fresken gefunden, die heute
im Heimatmuseum von Buzet aufbewahrt werden.
Perched on the hilltop in central Istria above the Mirna Valley stands the town with the
best preserved fortification system in Istria. In prehistoric
times already, people recognized the advantages of living
on its plateau where they built their settlement. We are not
certain of its power at the time, but its development can be
traced in the document from 804, when a report from the
Assembly of Rižana was written. Along with other complaints presented by representatives of Istrian towns at the large gathering at the Rižana River, they spoke about taxes to
Byzantium whose amount refl ected the economic power of
the towns and villages. According to its taxes, Motovun was
right after Pula, Poreč and Rovinj. Considering such economic power in the Early Middle Ages, the number of material
evidence from that time is incredibly small. Auf einem Hügel

Schon in urgeschichtlicher Zeit erkannten die Menschen die
Annehmlichkeiten des Lebens auf der ebenen Stelle oben
auf einem Hügel und errichteten daher dort eine Siedlung.
Welche Bedeutung die Stadt damals hatte, wissen wir nicht.
Doch wie sie sich entwickelte, können wir aus einem Dokument aus dem Jahr 804 entnehmen, als der Bericht des
Parlaments von Rižana verfasst wurde. Neben zahlreichen
Problemen, die die Vertreter der istrischen Städte bei der
großen Versammlung am Fluss Rižana vortrugen, ging es
auch um Steuerabgaben an Byzanz. Die Höhe der Steuer
hing von der wirtschaftlichen Macht der Städte und Siedlungen ab. Nach den Abgaben stand Montovun gleich hinter
Pula, Poreč und Rovinj. Nach der wirtschaftlichen Macht, die
Motovun im Frühmittelalter besaß, ist die Zahl der materiellen Zeugnisse dieser Zeit unglaublich klein. Es wurden erst
einige Fragmente von Kircheneinrichtungen gefunden.
Pazin Castle Paziner Kastell Pazin fosters SF
and adventure literature. It all started with Jules Verne’s novel
Mathias Sandorf (Paris, 1885) in which the hero manages to
escape from the castle located over the Pazin Abyss. This castle already existed in the 10th century; its today’s appearance dates from 1540. The Town Museum and the Ethnographic Museum of Istria are located in it. Pazin fördert SF und
Abenteuerliteratur, auf dem Roman Mathias Sandorf (Paris,
1885) von Jules Verne basierend, in dem der Protagonist aus
der Kastellgefangenschaft über der Grube von Pazin flieht.
Kastell existierte schon im 10. Jh. und seine heutige Form

Novigrad is first mentioned in
written documents in the late
6th century in a letter to Pope
Gregory I. In the 7th century, an
anonymous writer from Ravenna
refers to the town as Neapolis
in his book listing some 5,000
towns and 200 rivers of the then
known world, with descriptions
of Mediterranean islands. In later
centuries, different sources refer to Novigrad as Civitas Nova,
Emona and Emonia. The Novigrad archaeological site Čelega
with 12 graves, dating back to the
second half of the 7th century, is
witness to Slavic colonisation of
the area. The graves contained
household ceramic ware, silver
earrings, bone combs and other
artefacts, indicating that the

Slavic settlers mixed with the
barbarised Roman population.
Recent archaeological research
suggests that, during the Frankish state and the time of Charlemagne at the end of the 8th
and beginning of the 9th century,
Novigrad experienced one of the
richest periods in its history. As
the seat of the Frankish Duke
John, it was the starting point of
the feudalisation process and a
part of major cultural trends in
Europe of that time. A rare example of art from the early Carolingian period, that today commands the growing attention of
researchers, is the ciborium of
Bishop Mauritius. It is exhibited in
Lapidarium Museum that houses
one of Croatia’s most important
collections of stone monuments.

The dominant structure is the
Soardo-Bembo Castle, built as

towers. The town loggia, the
Pretorian manor, the remains of
towers, fortifications and gates
all date from the Middle Ages.
The parish church was built in
1880. The remains of dinosaurs
have been found along the
coast, not far from Bale. Bale ist

passes through the town and, as
early as 1899, the power plant is

life in characteristic residentialeconomic complexes stancije is
revived in the 19th c. The return
to the centuries-old tradition
of olive growing has recently
ranked Vodnjan at the very top of
the finest olive oil producers. Im

which Poreč, a jewel in the crown
of Istria’s tourism trade, is located
conceals some of the most beautiful mosaics of Early Christian art.
Poreč proudly carries its title as the
town of mosaics thanks first and
foremost to the Euphrasian Basilica.
The basilica’s walls are inlayed with
thousands of tiny pieces of stone,
creating breath-taking geometrical shapes and biblical scenes. The
basilica dates from the 6th century
and is on UNESCO’s World Heritage
List. We can also find modern-day
mosaics in Poreč, for example, on
the old Poreč Post Office located
in the town square, or at Zelena Laguna (Green Lagoon), a tourist resort
near Poreč. These mosaics are the
work of Edo Murtić, one of Croatia’s
greatest artists. Even today, new
works of art are added to this opulent collection through the Symposium in Poreč, which brings together
eminent Croatian as well as international artists. Alongside mosaics, artists have also created mosaic sculptures which are then given to the
town of Poreč, as for example, the
mosaic-decorated bench at Peškera
in Poreč or the mosaic cube on the
roundabout in the vicinity of Kukci.

again confirmed the exceptional
quality of this region’s oils. It all
started quite some time ago, in
2005, when Istria’s olive oils were
first mentioned in this prestigious guide. And since then their
quality has gone from strength

cow’s milk cheese on top.

einem runden Ausstecher oder
Glas Halbmonde ausschneiden,
und die Ränder mit einer Gabel
festdrücken, damit sie beim Kochen nicht aufgehen. Die Ravioli in

Istria and its natural beauty offer
a wide range of opportunities for
spending time in the outdoors.
To help promote year-round activity holidays, a special department,
Istra Bike & Outdoor DMC, was
established,and in early 2015 a
new brochure was published. Istra
Bike & Outdoor DMC was set up
with the aim of helping to develop
and promote activity holidays inn
the Istrian peninsula by bringing
together all necessary information in
one spot. Today, trekking, walking,
hiking and running are some of the
fastest growing forms of activity tourism. The Istra Trekking and Walking
Project was responsible for designing and marking some 30 walking
and trekking trails in the regions
of Buzet, Kaštelir, central Istria and
Buje and there are plans for making
as many as 500 kilometres of new
trails throughout the peninsula. Istria
also offers excellent opportunities for
free-climbing, paragliding, kayaking
and caving. Although mountain trails
belong to a separate system with
its own special markings, they will
be presented together with other
outdoor activities. Created by Istra
Bike & Outdoor DMC and published
by the Istria Tourist Board, the new
brochure Istra Outdoor 2015 gathers together information about all
of Istria’s bike trails, as well as
its running and walking trails. The
brochure also provides all other
information you might need when
visiting Istria, such as where to
stay, and has a calendar of sports
events to be held in 2015.

It takes approximately one and a half
hours to climb from the Poklon pass
(922 m) to the Vojak summit (1,396
m). The panoramic view spot, a stone
tower, offers a fantastic view of Istria
and Kvarner. There are a small hotel,
a mountain lodge and an Učka Nature
Park info point on the Poklon pass.
Vom Gebirgspass Poklon (922 m) bis
zum Gipfel Vojak (1.396 m) dauert der
Aufstieg etwa 1,5 Stunden. Von der
Aussichtsstelle - dem Steinturm bietet
sich ein phantastischer Ausblick auf
ganz Istrien und die KvarnerBucht.
Auf Poklon befinden sich ein kleineres Hotel, ein Wanderheim sowie
ein Infopunkt des Naturparks Učka.
Mala Učka
This village is the
highest rural settlement in Istria,
located at an elevation of 995 metres
above sea-level. It has retained the
original rural architecture and was
known for its production of sheep’s
milk cheese. Today, there is only one
family of sheep farmers left and the
village is visited mostly by weekenders, vacationers and hikers. Das Dorf
liegt auf 995 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und ist die höchste Siedlung
in Istrien. Es hat seine authentische
ursprüngliche Architektur bewahrt. In
der Vergangenheit war es für seine
Herstellung von Schafskäse bekannt.
Schafe werden heute nur noch von
einer Familie gezüchtet. Das Dorf
wird von Wochenendurlaubern, Ausfl

Morel Paths Radtour

In the spring when the Istrian
nature flourishes with the most
diverse plenitude of wild plants,
among which the morel, a rare
and highly prized mushroom,
a bike tour dedicated to this
extraordinary culinary treat takes
place. Since the trail is not demanding, the bike tour along
forest and field paths is an open
type tour, intended for all recreational enthusiasts and nature
lovers. The helmet is a mandatory
accessory. This 35-kilometre long
ride starts from Nova obala in
Umag, following the paths of the
Umag Riviera towards Savudrija,
a fishing village of ancient origins.
If you’re like most people and
don’t see lighthouses daily, you
will be stunned by the famous
Savudrija “lantern” whose light
has been an alert to ships since
the 19th century. From the St.
Peter lookout with the beautiful
view of the Bay of Piran, the

trail takes you through the lush
vegetation of the pine trees all
the way to Kanegra, a favourite
destination for mushroom and
asparagus lovers. If you look up,
you’ll see a picture interspersed
with numerous Sečovlje saltworks, and this is truly a sight
worth the effort. From there
you will climb up to Kolombanija
and continue to Soši, where you
start slightly descending
towards Murine. From
Murine, in no time, you’ll
reach the starting point,
Nova obala, where you
pass through the finish
line. So go ahead and follow the paths of the good
mushrooms and feel the
smell of springtime in
Northwest Istria! If by
any chance you find a remarkable specimen, save
it and exhibit it proudly
at - Smrčkijada - International Mushroom Days,
when the largest and the
most beautiful morel will
be selected. Maybe you’ll
be the lucky one!
Im Frühling, wenn die istrische
Natur reich an verschiedenen
(wild)wachsenden Pflanzen, darunter auch dem seltenen und sehr
begehrten Pilz Morchel, ist, wird
auch eine Radtour organisiert, die
dieser außergewöhnlichen kulinarischen Delikatesse gewidmet ist.
Die Radtour findet auf einer leichten Strecke statt, welche durch
Wald - und Feldwege führt, und
ist demnach eine Tour des offenen
Typs, also allen Freizeitsportlern
und Naturliebhabern zugedacht.
Der Fahrradhelm ist hierbei ein
Pflicht-Accessoire. Der Startpunkt
zu dieser 35 Km langen Fahrt
ist an der Küste (Nova obala) in
Umag, von wo aus die Tour über
die Wege der Umager Riviera in
Richtung Savudrija führt, zu einem
Fischerdorf antiken Ursprungs.
Wenn Sie keine Ausnahme sind
und nicht jeden Tag Leuchtturme
zu sehen bekommen, dann werden auch Sie von dieser bekannten
„Laterne” von Savudrija begeistert
sein, deren Lichtauge seit dem 19.
Jh. alle vorbeifahrenden Schiffe
bewacht. Vom Aussichtspunkt des
Hl. Peter mit einer wunderschönen
Umag
Aussicht auf die Bucht von Piran,
führt der Weg weiter durch die
üppige Vegetation mit Kiefern
bis zu Kanegra, einem beliebten
Reiseziel aller Pilz- und Spargelliebhaber. Wenn Sie dann von
der Schotterstraße hinaufsehen,
werden Sie ein atemberaubend
schönes Bild mit zahlreichen
Salinen von Sečovlje erblicken.
Der Anblick gerechtfertigt die
ganze eingebrachte Mühe. Von
hier aus geht es hoch aufwärts
bis nach Kolombanija und dann
weiter nach Soši, wo der Weg
weiter absteigend nach Murine
führt. Aus Murine gelangt man
im Handumdrehen bis zur Ausgangsposition Nova obala, wo es
durch das Ziel geht. Machen auch
Sie sich also auf den Weg der
guten Pilze und spüren alle Düfte
des Frühlings im Nordwestlichen
Istrien in Ihrer Nase!

- the town of artists, will host the
fourth recreational bicycle ride in
a row in June! “Artistic Grožnjan”
is meant for everyone wishing
to enjoy the most spectacular
landscapes of north-western
Istria on two wheels. The 27
km-long trail starts in the centre of a picturesque town, is of
medium difficulty and ridden on
macadam, as
well as down
enchanting
forest paths.
The ride begins at 2 p.m.
and passes
through the villages of Bibali,
Marušići, Kornarija and
Martinčići. For
unobstructed
enjoyment,
it is recommended to
bring along
an inner tube
and protective
helmet. The 30 kn participation
fee includes drinks and refreshments during the ride. At the
beginning of the recreational
route you will explore the old
railway tracks, now revived as
the Parenzana cycling trail. Bicycle ride “Artistic Grožnjan” will
also lead through two attractive
and preserved tunnels of the
Parenzana, through which the
train bearing the same name
connected the towns of Poreč
and Trieste between 1902-1935.
The return to Grožnjan, a summer
destination of numerous artists,
is anticipated at around 5 p.m.

als gleichnamige Radstrecke wiederbelebt ist. „Künstlerisches
Grožnjan“ führt Sie auch durch
zwei attraktive und gut erhaltene
Tunnels von Parenzana, durch
welche in der Zeit zwischen 1902
und 1935 ein gleichnamiger Zug
Poreč und Triest miteinander
verbunden hat. Die Rückkehr
nach Grožnjan, in dem sich im
Sommer zahlreiche Künstler aufhalten und schaffen, ist für ca.
17 Uhr geplant.

A place where both the young and old can safely
enjoy adrenaline-rush activities, the water park is
located two km south of Poreč, in the direction of
Funtana and Vrsar, in the vicinity of Zelena Laguna
(Green Lagoon). Adrenaline-rush seekers will be
thrilled to hear that Aquacolors Poreč offers as
many as 17 different attractions, 13 of which are
slides and hydrocoasters, divided into four different
categories: adrenaline, fun, relaxation, and kids.
Each type of attraction has its own special light
effects. Most of the slides are in the adrenaline
category. It’s impossible not to mention Magicone,
one of Europe’s most awesome slides! With an
access ramp some 20 m high and 28 m wide,
it will prove a challenge for only the bravest. If
you’re looking from some tamer fun, try out the
Family Rafting Slide, Body Slide and Multi-slide. In
the relaxation zone you can choose between wave
pools that cover an area of almost 3,000 m2 or
you can sail down the 500 m long Lazy River. And

Mit einer Rampenhöhe von 20 Metern
und einer Breite von 28 Metern ist diese
eine echte Herausforderung für Mutige!
Aber auch für etwas ruhigeren Spaß ist
gesorgt. Hier gibt es die Family Rafting
Slide, Body Slide und Multislide und in
der Relax-Zone kann man zwischen
dem Wellenbad auf fast 3000 m2 oder
dem 500 Meter langem „Faulen Fluss“
zum Geniessen und Entspannen wählen.
Für die Kleinsten steht der Kids Tower,
Mushroom und Turtle Slide zum Spielen
und Plantschen bereit und während die
Kleinen dort ihren Spaß haben, können
die Eltern entpannen aber auch beruhigt
sein, da die Schwimmbecken vollkommen
sicher gebaut wurden.

regions it inhabits are also home
to many different marine organisms, echinoderms in particular.
Generally it cannot be found in
depths shallower than 75 m or

as wide-spread as other clams.

in spring and summer and feeds
on floating organic particles.

The Nature Protection Act
regulates the protection of
strictly protected species,
which include bivalves. It is
prohibited to remove them
from nature, intentionally
capture or kill them, intentionally damage or destroy
their development stages,
or destroy their reproducing
grounds. Das Naturschutzgesetz regelt den Schutz
der streng geschützten Arten, dazu gehören auch die
Schalenweichtiere. Es ist
verboten, sie der Natur zu
entnehmen, vorsätzlich zu
fangen oder zu töten, sie
mutwillig zu beschädigen
oder ihre Lebensräume sowie
Brutgebiete zu zerstören.
Common piddock
Dattelmuschel
Common piddock, Pholas
dactylus (Linné, 1758), a bivalve
capable of boring into rock, belongs
to the family Pholadidae. It has an
elongated oval, finger-shaped shell
that does not cover all of its body.
The rough surface of the shell is
covered in concentric stripes and
has a set of ridges or “teeth”.
The external part of the shell is
yellowish-white in colour while the
inner surface is whitish. It can grow
to a maximum length of 12 cm and
weigh up to 40 grams, although
on average it weighs about 20
grams. The common piddock can
be found along the entire Adriatic
coast, mainly on firm sea beds.
By rotating its shell it bores long
burrows into soft rock, mud, peat,
clay and even wood, and as the
common piddock grows so do
the burrows. It feeds on plankton
and floating organic particles and
reproduces by laying eggs. One
of its characteristic features is
that it leaves a trail of slime that
glows in the dark.

Die Meerdattel auch
Dattelmuschel oder Große Bohrmuschel, lateinisch Pholas
dactylus (Linné 1758) genannt,
gehört zur Familie Pholadidae
und besitzt eine länglich ovale
Form. Die beiden Schalenhälften
sind nicht mit einem Bindegewebsstrang fest miteinander verbunden, sondern an den Enden
offen. Die gesamte Außenschale
ist mit groben konzentrischen
Streifen und Rippen mit winzigen
Zähnchen bedeckt. Außen ist die
Muschel gelb-weiß und innen
kreidig-weiß und kann eine Länge
von bis zu 12 Zentimeter und ein
Gewicht von bis zu 40 Grammm
erreichen. Im Durchschnitt wiegt
sie meist etwa 20 Gramm. Sie
kommt entlang der Adria-Küste
vor und ist besonders auf festem
Meeresboden zu finden aber auch
in seichtem Wasser mit weichem
oder sandigem Grund. Die Meerdatteln bohren Wohnröhren in

Lehm und sogar Holz. Je mehr
sie wachsen desto breiter werden
die Gänge. Diese Muschel ernährt
sich von Plankton und organische
Schwebstoffe und stösst Eier zur
Fortpflanzung aus. Die Besonderheit der Bohrmuschel liegt darin,
dass sie Schleim aussondert, welcher in der Nacht funkelt.
The brittle pen shell
or Atrina fragilis (Pennant, 1777)
belongs to the family Pinnidae,
the pen shells. It is an extremely
attractive clam, triangular in shape,
although the outer surface of
its shell does not have the pronounced scaly lamella of the noble
pen shell (Pinna nobilis). Its valves
are symmetrical, thin and brittle.
The outer surface of the shell is
greenish brown in colour while
the inside is pearly. It can grow
up to 35 cm and weigh up to
750 grams, although its average
weight is about 400 grams. The

ansehnliche Muschel hat die Form
eines gleichschenkligen Dreiecks.
Die Außenschale jedoch hat keine

(Pinna nobilis). Die Schalen der
Muscheln sind symmetrisch, dünn
und brüchig. Ihre Außenseite
ist grün-braun und opalisierend
im Inneren. Sie kann bis auf
eine Länge von 35 Zentimeter
wachsen und bis zu 750 Gramm
wiegen. Ihr Durchschnittsgewicht
liegt meist bei etwa 400 Gramm.
Sie lebt auf sandig-schlammigen
Boden auf dem sie sich mit ihren
Byssus-Faserbärten verankert. Der
bevorzugte Lebensraum dieser
Muschel ist mit einer Vielzahl
von anderen Meeresorganismen,
insbesondere Stachelhäutern besiedelt. Zu finden ist sie in einer
Meerestiefe ab 75 Metern, jedoch
nicht tiefer als 130 Meter und
gehört zu den weniger verbreiteten Muschelarten. Die Laichzeit
findet im Frühjahr und Sommer
statt. Die Steckmuschel ernährt
sich vor allem von organischen
