The Istrian Stonehenge

Istrian Stonehenge is the popular name given to a circular
stone temple known as tolos, a
4000-year old shrine old situated
at Mali sveti Anđel (Small Holy
Angel) near Poreč,. A reconstruc-
tion of the Istrian Stonehenge is
situated in Tićan. This rare Tićan
stone circle comprising huge
stone blocks each weighing as
much as seven tons, has become
a world famous tourist attraction.
Daily, it attracts the curious and
those admirers of the mystical
who come to Istria from every
continent in order to be able to
meditate on Tićan’s megaliths.

Throughout this festival Fažana
generously presents its glittering
jewellery to the sea... Together
with the waterfront, all streets
are joined together in the joy of
light! Candles, lights, lanterns...
are all linked in a special way by
the illumination of fishing boats
and the sea, adding their lights
and lanterns to the reflection
of the glittering stars. Music accompanies this festival of light, in
this case street musicians, soloists and small music groups. In
such an atmosphere Fažana truly
resembles the blue and silver luminous nuances of its symbol,
the swift pilchard…
Lichtfest
Das ist eine Festlichkeit, bei der
Fažana seinen Lichtschmuck
dem Meer schenkt... Eigentlich
werden zusammen mit der Riva
alle Gassen und Straßen in einer
Ode des Lichtes verbunden! Mit
Kerzen, Glühbirnen, Fackeln...
auf besondere Weise kommen
die Lichter der Fischer und des
Meeres hinzu, die sich mit dem
spiegelnden gestirnten Himmel
im Wasser mit ihren Kerzen und
Laternen vereinen. Das Lichtfest
wird durch Musik ergänzt, dieses Mal mit Straßenmusikanten,
Solisten und kleineren Bands. In
dieser Atmosphäre ähnelt Fažana
wirklich dem Lichtspiel vom Blau
und Silber seines Symbols, der
schnellen Sardelle…

Sepomaja is an area in Istria populated from the
antique period: Zambratija, Sipar, Katoro, Muntarol
(Northwestern Istria), as it stands in the TABULA
PEUTINGERIANA. The Nights of Antiquity are intended to be an interactive multimedia program,
the backbone of which is scientific research.
Sepomaja ist unser in der Antike besiedeltes Gebiet und umfasst: Zambratija, Sipar, Katoro, Muntarol (Nordwestistrien).
So heißt es in der TABULA PEUTINGERIANA. Antike
Nächte in der Form von interaktiven MultimediaProgrammen auf der Grundlage von wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen.

Römisher Valbandon
Already ancient Romans, known for their hedonism, were well aware of the beauty of this area,
so that as many as seven patrician families decided to build their magnificent villae rusticae
here. Apart from many creative workshops where
you can learn about the ancient skills of making
mosaics and amphorae, and fashion show of Roman jewellery, you can also witness real Roman
Bacchanalia.
Auch die alten Römer, insbesondere di Hedonisten,
haben schon damals den Reiz dieser Gegend entdeckt, so dass sich sogar sieben Patrizierfamilien
dazu entschlossen hatten, hier ihre prunktvollen
Landvillen zu errichten. Neben zahlreichen kreativen Kursen, in denen Sie die alte Kunst der Anfertigung von Mosaiken und Amphoren erlernen
können und Modenschaus, in denen der römische
Schmuck vorgeführt wird, werden Sie auch an den
echten römischen Trinkgelagen teilnehmen.

Žminj
Žminj
If all the roads in Europe lead
to Rome, then all the roads in
Istria lead to Žminj, the centre
of Istria and the old intersection.
On the sole cross-roads below
the town there is Calvary from
1720. Žminj was the town of
Pazin County which was taken
over by the Venetians only for
a year in 1617. A smaller part
of citadel, one of the four round
towers, one fort wing, the outer
part of fortification protecting
the houses of commons and
one well preserved public tank
dating back to 1863 can be seen
today from the 15th century city
fortifications. The centre of the
city is dominated by a great
Baroque three-arch parish church
of St. Mihovil built in 1625 on the
foundations of the previous 12th
century parish church.
Wenn in Europa alle Wege nach Rom
führen, dann führen in Istrien alle Wege
nach Žminj, dem Mittelpunkt Istriens
und einem alten Schnittpunkt der Wege.
Direkt an der Kreuzung am Fuße der
kleinen Stadt befindet sich Kalvarija aus
dem Jahre 1720. Žminj war seit dem
Jahre 1368 eine Stadt der Grafschaft
Pazin, welche im Jahr 1617 nur für 1
Jahr lang von den Venezianern erobert
wurde. Von den städtischen Bollwerken
aus dem 15. Jahrhundert ist heute der
kleinere Teil der Festung, einer der vier
runden Türme, ein Flügel der Festung,
der äußere Teil der Gemäuer welche
die Häuser der Dorfbewohner geschützt
haben, sowie die gut erhaltene öffentliche
Zisterne aus dem Jahre 1863 sichtbar. In
der Mitte der Stadt dominiert die große
barocke, dreiflügelige Pfarrkirche des Hl.
Mihovil erbaut im Jahre 1625 auf den
Fundamenten der früheren aus dem
12. Jahrhundert.

Novigrad
Vrsar - Streets and Squares
In the course of the past centuries narrow streets
and small intimate squares developed inside the
ancient walls. Interesting examples of residential
architecture containing elements of different historic styles have been preserved till the present
days. Old houses with intersting architectural details (courtyards, water-wells, staircases, doors,
windows, balconies, chimmneys) are particularly
attractive. The street ‘Ulica gradskih vrata’ (The
Town Gate Street) is leading from the main gate
to the top of the old town. There are several interesting old houses in that street. Not far from
the main town gate there is a house with curious
stone figures representing two chubby-faced, fullbreasted woman. The figures are built in high up in
the house edges. Along this house the picturesque
street ‘Pod voltom’ (‘Under the vaults’) is going, being vaultedon two spots. Vaulted streets are typical
of the medieval archittecture. Little space inside
the town dictated rational and economic use of it.
In the Town Gate Street there is also a house dating from the 18th century characrised by both the
Renaissance and Baroque style. On its portal the
Latin text is engraved: IO PIETRO (voda) M POLLO
(ieri) F (eccit) ANNO D (omini) 1757. (I, Petar Boico,
of the deceased Pollo, solemny made in the year
of the Lord 1757).

Vrsar - Strassen und Plätze
Innerhalb der Stadmauern entstanden durch Jahrhunderte schmale enge Gassen und kleine intime
Plätze. In den engen Gassen finden sich interessante Beispiele der Wohnarchitektur mit Elementen verschiedener Baustiele. Die alten Häuser mit
interessanten architektonischen Datails (Balkons,
Innenhöfe, Brunnen. Treppenhäuser. Türen, Fenster.
Kamine) ziehen die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich an.
Vom Stadttor zum Gipfel steigt die Strasse Gradska
vrata mit besonders schönen alten Häusern. In der
Nähte des Stadttors befindet sich ein Haus mit zwei
interessanten Frauenfiguren (rundliche Gesichter,
üppige Brüste) hoch auf dem Vorfront des Hauses. Neben dem Haus führt die malerische Gasse
Pod voltom, die auf zwei Stellen überwölbt ist. Die
überwölbten Strassen sind für die mittelalterliche
Architektur charakteristisch. Der enge Raum innerhalb der Stadtmauern diktierte rationelle und ökonomische Platznutzung. Auf dem Portal eines renaissance-barocken Hauses in der Strasse Gradska
vrata aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jh. findet man
eine Tafel mit gemeisselten Aufschrift: I0 PIETRO
IVODAI M POLLO F(ieri) F (eccit) ANNO D (domini)
1757. Ich Pele Boccio, Sohn des verstorbenen Pola
baute feierlich Anno Domini 1757.
Crypt (Novigrad)
Behind the high altar of the St. Pelagius’ Church
lies a sunken (Early) Romanesque crypt, the
only of its kind in Istria, and one of only a few
in Croatia. The crypt has three naves, with
strong cross vaults and two small, vaulted
spaces in the dead corners. In the central part,
the confessio (chamber with holy tomb) is located, bearing an inscription with the name of
Bishop Adam from the year 1146.
Prefect’s table (Tinjan)
In Tinjan, Pod ladonjah (under hackberry trees),
on a plateau offering a breathtaking view of
Draga, amidst green grass stands the prefect’s
table. The firm stone base holds a round stone
table surrounded by seven stone seats. Experts say that there used to be 10 or12 such
seats, since the prefect was chosen among 12
judges. According to legend the choice was
a matter of pure luck. A certain number of
townspeople would sit around the table and
place their long beards on the table while
someone put a flea in the indented central
part. Whosever beard the flea chose became
the lucky prefect.
Tinjan
Krypta (Novigrad)
Hinter dem Hauptaltar der Pelagiuskirche liegt eine halb
eingegrabene (früh)romanische Krypta, die einzige ihrer
Art in Istrien und eine der wenigen in ganz Kroatien. Die
Krypta ist dreischiffig, mit starken Kreuzgewölben und
zwei kleinen, überwölbten Räumen in den toten Ecken.
Im zentralen Teil steht die Confessio (Raum mit Heiligengrab), die eine Inschrift mit dem Namen des Bischofs
Adam aus dem Jahr 1146 trägt.
Der Tisch des Gespans (Tinjan)
In Tinjan, an einem schattigen Plätzchen, auf einem Plateau, von dem sich ein unvergesslicher Blick auf das Tal
Draga eröffnet, inmitten eines grünen Rasens, steht der
Tisch des Gespans. Auf einem stabilen Steinsockel befindet sich eine runde Steinplatte. Um den Tisch herum
waren sieben Steinsitze erhalten geblieben. Fachliche
Erläuterungen weisen darauf hin, dass früher 10 oder 12
solcher Steinsitzgelegenheiten vorhanden waren. Nach
den Aufzeichnungen wurde der Gespan unter 12 Richtern
gewählt. Einer Überlieferung zufolge, soll der Gespan auf
gut Glück gewählt worden sein. Eine bestimmte Anzahl
von Bürgern hätten um den Tisch herum gesessen, hätten ihre langen Bärte darauf gelegt, und jemand hätte in
eine Eintiefung in der Tischmitte einen Floh gesetzt. Zum
Gespan ist dann der Glückliche gewählt worden, dem der
Floh an den Bart gesprungen sei.

The Ancient bell-tower
of the old Labin
It is rare that within such a small area - it is said to
be the size of the palm of your hand - that there
are so many natural beauties and ancient places
as there are in Labin, a small, old town situated on
the hill. Its ancient name was Albona or Alvona, in
the Celtic language meaning exactly that - a town
on a hill or a high village.
The highest building on Labin, an ancient bell-tower,
is also a magnificent belvedere. An unforgettable
panorama can be seen from the top of the tower.
Labin’s kampanil (bell-tower) was built in 1623 on
the foundations of the former church of St. Justo. It
has extensive, strong and solid walls and is 33 metres high. The bell openings are narrow and there
are two of them (bifore). Above them, on each of
the four corners, are sharp, stone points which decorate this massive building. This giant from Labin
ends with an octagonal drum and a pyramid. Two
bells, one larger than the other, can periodically be
heard from the bell tower whilst the bell’s sound
reaches far and wide.

Auf einem kleinen Raum wie diesem, man könnte
fast sagen wie auf einer Handfläche, befinden sich
selten so viele Schönheiten und altertümliche Dinge
wie in Labin, einer alten Stadt auf dem Berg. Und ihr
alter Name Albona, Alvona bedeutet in keltischer
Sprache genau der Stadt auf dem Berg oder hohe
Siedlung.
Das höchste Bauwerk von Labin, der uralte Glockenturm, ist ein wunderschöner Aussichtsturm.
Von dessen Spitze aus hat man tatsächlich ein
unvergessliches Panorama. Das kampanil von Labin wurde im Jahre 1623 auf den Fundamenten
der einstigen Kirche des Hl. Justus erhoben. Er hat
breite und starke, feste Wände und ist 33 Meter
hoch. Die Öffnungen für die Glocken sind eng und

Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I was
especially interested in the planning of the Naval Church in Pula. He was also present at the
foundation stone laying ceremony in 1891, at
Stoja, in the area of Pula known as San Policarpo. The consecration ceremony of the Church
of Our Lady of the Sea was held in 1898. The
entire plan also included the surrounding area
with stairs descending towards the sea. Today,
it particularly stands out thanks to its exterior
rows of white stone from Brijuni and red marble from Oprtalj and Brtonigla. Its mosaics are
reminiscent of those in the Basilica of Euphrasius in Poreč and St. Mark’s in Venice. In front
of the portal of Our Lady of the Sea especially
interesting are columns tied in a Samson knot.
Our Lady of the Sea is one of the major sights
of Pula, Istria and the entire Adriatic.

der Seemannskirche in Pula. Er war auch anwesend
bei der Grundsteinlegung im Jahr 1891, auf Stoja, im
Stadtviertel Pulas San Polikarpo. Die festliche Einweihung der Madonna des Meeres fand im Jahr 1898
statt. Dieses Projekt umfasste auch die Grünanlage
mit einer Treppe zum Meer. Heute stellt sie durch ihr
äußeres Erscheinungsbild etwas Besonderes dar, mit
den senkrechten Reihen des weißen Natursteins von
Brioni und dem roten Marmor aus Oprtalj und Brtonigla.
Ihre Mosaike erinnern an die Porečer EuphrasiusBasilika und die Basilika des hl. Markus in Venedig.
Vor dem Portal der Madonna des Meeres wird die
Aufmerksamkeit auf die mit einem Seemannsknoten
verbundenen Säulen gelenkt. Die Madonna des Meeres
ist eine Sehenswürdigkeit von Pula, Istrien und der
gesamten Adria.

At the beginning of the First World War a fortress
railway was built around Pula which was about
25 km long. It connected the ring of fortresses
around Pula, was connected to the tramlines
and was used to supply the fortresses.
Um Pula herum wurde Anfang des Zweiten Weltkriegs
eine Festungseisenbahn mit einer Länge von 25 km
erbaut. Diese verband den Kreis der Festungen um Pula
herum und hatte eine Verbindung mit der Straßenbahn,
und diente der Versorgung der Festung.
Oprtalj, situated on the hill reachable from Motovun along the narrow
southward plateau is according to
many, one of the most picturesque
towns of the northern Istria. Oprtalj
or Portole, which is its Italian name,
was formerly a fort surrounded by
defensive walls on which houses
were built among barely protruding former town gates. In front of
the gates, there is a huge Venetian
loggia with the collection of stone
monuments and an immediate vicinity of a plateau situated on the
high fortifications offering the view
all the way to the sea.The parish
church of St. George built in 1526
is ornamented with the unique bell
tower which top isn’t shaped as a
pyramid characteristical for the Istrian bell towers but remained in its
original form as a tower.

Oprtalj
Oprtalj, gelegen auf einem Hügel, zu
welchem man über eine enge Hangebene von der südlichen Seite aus der
Richtung von Motovun gelangt, ist nach
Meinung Vieler eine der pitorresksten
kleinen Städte des nördlichen Istriens.
Oprtalj oder Portole, wie die italienische
Abwandlung des Namens lautet, war
seinerzeit eine Festung umgeben von
Mauern auf welchen Häuser errichtet
wurden, unter welchen das damalige
Stadttor kaum herausragt. Vor dem Tor
befindet sich die große venezianische
Loggia mit einem Lapidarium, und
neben ihr ist auf hohen Bollwerken
ein Plateau gelegen, von welchem
der Blick ganz bis zum Meer langt.
Die Pfarrkirche des Hl. Juraj, welche
mit einem einzigartigen Glockenturm
geschmückt ist, deren Spitze nicht die
Form einer Pyramide, charakteristisch
für Glockentürme Istriens hat, sondern in
ursprünglicher Form als Turm geblieben
ist, wurde im Jahre 1526 erbaut.

Unlike potters from Ćukarija and Pavletići
whose pottery was made using feet potters wheel, potters from Rakalj made
pottery using manual potters’ wheel ‘vitlo’ using dumpling technique. Since
pots were not glazed, people coated
them with bacon and boiling water to
prevent leaking. Potters from Rakalj used
to go around Istria selling pottery using
‘measure for measure’ method; peasants exchanged amount of beans, wheat
or corn for pot.

Töpferei
Im Unterschied zu den Töpfern aus Ćukarije und Pavletići, die
die Töpferwaren an der Töpferscheibe herstellten, stellten die
Töpfer aus Raklje ihre Töpfe an der Töpferscheibe mit der Hand,
genannt vitlo in der sogenannten ’Klößchentechnik’, her.
Da die Töpfe nicht glasiert waren, beschmierte man sie von
ihnen mit Speck und heißem Wasser, damit sie keine Flüssigkeit
durchließen.
Die Töpfer aus Raklje reisten durch Istrien mit beladenen Eseln
und machten Geschäfte. Es handelte sich um Tauschgeschäfte.
Die Bauern gaben so viel Bohnen, Getreide oder Mais wie viel
in den Topf, den sie kauften, hinein passte. Außer den Töpferwaren der heimischen Töpferei, benutzten die Stadtbewohner
Istriens auch importierte Waren wie zB. bukalet, die italienische
Töpfer herstellten oder skleda kranjica, slowenische Waren,
die sich von den istrischen unterscheiden. Der Unterschied
lag in der Glasur.

sopela - is a traditional meeting of folklore
groups coming from the Mediterranean area,
but also other parts of Europe and the world.
During the seven days of this festival the
streets of Poreč are swarming with colorful
folk costumes, traditional musical instruments
and dances. The Poreč square “Trg slobode”
becomes the central venue for the event. The
ambiance and crowds completely blend with
the performances of folklore groups. Especially
interesting is the competition of solo players of
Mediterranean wind instruments. For all lovers
of Mediterranean cuisine there is a presentation of old traditional dishes that have been
prepared with a lot of love. Unique display
of folk costumes, presentation of traditional
crafts and instructive school of Mediterranean
folklore are all offered here at this meeting of
culture, tradition, dance and music.

Dusting the old chest of drawers
brings a true breath of past times.
These old chests of drawers conceal the priceless textile goods,
once pure white fabrics, yet today
although turned yellow from the
years gone by, still unique and
beautifully embroidered. The white
bed sheets usually have different
floral patterns or initials of a newborn. Old bedspreads, linen sheets,
pillowcases for festive occasions,
women’s underwear and newborn
wear have been kept from the distant past and are handed down
from generation to generation. The
rich contents of these chests of
drawers reveal a somewhat forgotten way of life of our forefathers.

Den Staub von den alten Kommoden
zu entfernen, ist ein wahrer Hauch der
Vergangenheit. Unter diesen zeitlosen
Schreinen verstecken sich unschätzbare textile Gegenstände, einst reinweiße Stoffe, und heute, wenn auch
schon mit der Zeit vergilbt, noch immer einzigartig und bunt bestickt. Auf
den weißen Laken sind am häufigsten
verschiedene Blumenmuster und die
Initialen von Neugeborenen aufgenäht. Alte Bettüberwürfe, Leinentücher, feierliche Kissenbezüge, intime
Frauenwäsche und Babystrampler. Sie
werden seit langer Zeit bewahrt und
werden von Generation zu Generation
weitergegeben. Der reiche Inhalt der
wertvollen Kommoden offenbart uns
das einigermaßen vergessene tägliche
Leben und den Lebensstil unserer Vorfahren.

of preserving Istrian folk heritage,
the local fair ground in Kanfanar
becomes the venue for the traditional fair of Istrian oxen that takes
place on Jakovlja. The Istrian ox
descends from the extinct primeval ox that was once prevalent in
Istria. This ox of pure breed is believed to be the largest mammal
in Europe and one of the most
beautiful in the whole world. It is
well known as a meek animal that
has always been the most important farm animal in Istria. Boškarini graze and browse on almost

Erhaltung des alten Volksschatzes Istriens wird die Ochsenschau auf Jakovlje
schon eine lange Reihe an Jahren auf
dem örtlichen Marktplatz in Kanfanar
abgehalten. Das Rindvieh von Istrien
ist ein Abkömmling der ausgestorbenen
Art des Ur-Rindviehes, das einst auf dem
Gebiet Istriens wohnhaft war. Diese wird
als reine Rasse als größtes Säugetier in
Europa und als eine der schönsten in
der Welt betrachtet. Sie ist bekannt für
ihre Zahmheit und die hiesigen Bauern
können ihren Bestand genau dieser Art
verdanken. Sie weiden und äsen fast alles auf dieser kargen Erde und dadurch
sahen die Wälder und Weiden einst dank
ihnen wie Parks aus.

The festival of traditional Istrian pastries, Sweet
Istria, has been held since 1997. Year after year
on the Feast of the Assumption this event takes
place at one of the most famous wells (šterna)
in Istria, in the central square in Vižinada. It is
a meeting place for housewives from all over
Istria, true culinary artists, as well as all lovers
of homemade pastries. This festival of pastries
is an exhibition of typical Istrian pastries: fritule,
kroštule, cukerančići, pandešpanja, povetica, pinca and several kinds of dry pastries called sweet
Istrian užanca.
Das Festival istrischer traditioneller süßer Leckereien,
Süßes Istrien, wird seit dem Jahr 1997 abgehalten.
Zum Feiertag Mariä Himmelfahrt finden sich von Jahr
zu Jahr, auf einer der bekanntesten Zisternen in Istrien, auf dem Hauptplatz in Vižinada, neben Hausfrauen aus ganz Istrien, die Kunstwerke des kulinarischen
Handwerks erschaffen, auch zahlreiche Liebhaber
einheimischen Gebäcks ein. Dieses Kuchenfest ist
eine Ausstellung typischer istrischer süßer Leckereien: Fettgebackens wie ‘Fritule’ und ‘Hobelspäne’,
Zucker-Weingebäck, Sandkuchen ‘spanisches Brot’,
Nussrolle, Napfkuchen und einige Sorten von trockenem Gespäck, das als süße istrische Usance bezeichnet wird.

Among the numerous varieties
found in this area, the most important is the Istrian white Malvazija. The wine has a pale gold
colour, pleasing aroma of locust
tree blossom, with a harmonious,
delicate freshness and needed
structure. Teran is typical of Istria
just as well, a wine with an colour
ranging from purple to ruby-red,
of lively fruit aroma, pronouncedly
fresh and less structured. They are
followed by red Burgundy, red Hrvatica, and a few varieties that are
less famous.
A number of world-known highquality varieties are also cultivated
here like white Pinot, Chardonnay,
grey Pinot, red Merlot, Refošk and
Cabernet Sauvignon. A special attraction for those fond of good
wine are also two muscat varieties
of special aroma: Momjan Muscat
and Poreč Muscat rose.
Weinwegweiser
Von den zahlreichen Sorten, die wir auf
diesem Gebiet finden, ist der weiße istrische Malvasier am wichtigsten. Der
Wein hat eine strohgelbe Farbe, einen
angenehmen Geruch nach Akazienblüten, eine harmonisch mäßige Frische

ist in Istrien der Teran, von violetter bis

und der Hrvatica und einige weniger bekannte Sorten, aber hier gedeihen auch
zahlreiche andere Sorten von hoher
Qualität, die in der Welt bekannt sind,
wie der weiße Pinot, ein Chardonnay,
ein grauer Pinot, sowie ein roter Merlot, ein Refosco und ein Cabernet Sauvignon. Eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit
erwecken bei den Libhabern des guten
Tropfens auch zwei Muskatsorten von
einem außergewöhnlichen Aroma: der
Momjaner Muskat und die Muskat-Rose
von Poreč.

Mramornica cave
Höhle Mramornica
One of the largest caves in Istria, Mramornica
cave is a true gem of the Istrian underground.
Mramornica was mentioned as early as 1770
when the famous travel writer Alberto Fortis visited and described this cave. Close to Brtonigla,
by Stancija Drušković, after the nearly vertical
steps, stands the entrance to one of the largest
underground halls in Istria. The cave is rich in
different coloured dripstones, stalagmites that
are as much as 13 meters tall making Mramornica particularly fascinating and attractive. From
the well-kept paths of the cave there is a view
of the inaccessible parts, which because of this
secretiveness are even more alluring. For all lovers of untouched nature, far from the summer
crowds and heat, Mramornica is an ideal place
for natural refreshment and relaxation.
Eine der größten Höhlen in Istrien, die Höhle Mramornica, stellt ein wahres Juwel der istrischen Unterwelt
dar. Mramornica wird im fernen Jahr 1770 erwähnt,
als sie vom bekannten Reiseschreiber Alberto Fortis
besucht und beschrieben wurde. Unweit von Brtonigla,
beim Anwesen Drušković, befindet sich, nach den fast
hochkantigen Stiegen, der Eingang in eine der größten
unterirdischen Hallen in Istrien, reich an Tropfsteinen
verschiedenster Farben, Stalagmiten auch bis zu dreizehn Meter hoch, die der Höhle Mramornica einen
besonderen Zauber verleihen. Von den eingerichteten
Höhlenwegen breitet sich der Blick auf unzugängliche
Teile der Höhle aus, die durch ihre Hintergründigkeit
noch anziehender werden. Für alle Liebhaber der unberührten Natur, weit weg von der Sommerglut und
Hitze, wird Mramornica zu einer idealen natürlichen
Erfrischung in jeder Hinsicht.

St. Lucy’s tears
According to the legend that has
been handed down from generation to generation, when St. Lucy
arrived to the rock on the outskirts of the village Skitača, that
offers a breathtaking view of the
entire Kvarner Bay and Venice in
the distance, she began to cry
with joy. As the tears were slipping down her face, they made a
hole in the ground where water
has been springing up for centuries. Legend has it, and it is a fact
that only a few meters below the
top of Brdo hill, there is a small
spring coming out from a rock,
which never runs dry, not even
during the sweltering summer
heat. This spring, which is at the
very top, not at the foot of the
hill is surely a rare natural phenomenon. For this very reason
people believe that these are St.
Lucy’s tears.
Die Tränen der Hl. Lucija-
Die Volkslegende, die seit Jahrhunderten
von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben wird, erzählt, dass die Hl. Lucija
während des Wanderns um die Welt
bis zum Felsen am Rande des Dorfes
Skitača kam; als sie den wunderschönen Ausblick sah, der sich auf die ganze
Kvarnerbucht und Venedig in der Ferne
bot, fing sie vor Freude an zu weinen.
Wie die Tränen ihr Gesicht hinunterliefen,
so entstand in der Erde eine Quelle aus
welcher das Wasser schon seit Jahrhunderten hervorquellt und fließt. Die Legenden besagen und Tatsache ist, dass sich
nur ein paar Kilometer unter der Spitze
von Brdo eine kleine Wasserquelle befindet, die aus einem Felsen entspringt und
niemals versiegt, nicht einmal im Sommer zu Zeiten der stärksten Gluthitze.
Die Quelle die an der Spitze des Berges,
und nicht am Fuße dessen, entspringt,
ist sicherlich ein seltenes Naturphänomen. Genau deshalb glaubt das Volk
auch, dass es sich um die Tränen der
Hl. Lucija handelt.

spring we have learnt about birds and
enjoyed discovering the hidden secrets
of nature. Birds have revealed their songs
and turned their melodies into words.

European bee-eater
(Lat. Merops apiaster)
I love the open country with trees and
some bushes. Because of the warm climate in Istria, I tunnel burrows in sandpits
or the side of sandy riverbanks. There I
lay eggs and take care of my young. I am
somewhat afraid of man, yet very sociable. I fly skilfully and in the air sing and
catch bees, wasps, hornets and other
insects.
Blackbird (Lat. Turdus merula)
I am a resident of groves, meadows and
towns of Istria and have family in Europe,
Africa, Asia and Australia. I breed in your
gardens, parks and woods. I eat insects,
but berries, fruits and seeds as well. My
song is very melodious and pleasant.

Saubere Umwelt - Istrien
Im Gefüge der traditionellen ökologischen Aktion «Saubere
Umwelt - Istrien haben wir in diesem Frühling etwas über
Vögel gelernt und das Kennen lernen der versteckten Naturgeheimnisse genossen. Die Vögel haben uns ihr Lied offenbart und die Melodien wandelten sich zu Worten um. Hier
ist, was sie uns offenbart haben:
Bienenfresser (lat. Merops apiaster)
Ich liebe in meinem Lebensraum offene Landschaften, mit
vereinzelten Bäumen und verstreutem Gebüsch. Wegen
des warmen Klimas brüte ich in Istrien in einem Gebiet
mit Flysch- oder Sandboden. Hier bohre ich Löcher und in
diesen Erdröhren ziehe ich meine Jungen auf. Ich bin der
farbigste Vogel in Istrien, und am besten sieht man mich
auf Telefondrähten. Ich bin etwas scheu, aber dennoch sehr
gesellig. Außerdem bin ich ein Flugkünstler, denn im Flug
singe ich und fange Bienen, Wespen, Hummeln und andere
Insekten.
Amsel oder Schwarzdrossel (lat. Turdus merula)
Ich lebe in den Wäldchen, auf den Wiesen und in den Städten
Istriens, und habe Verwandtschaft in Europa, Afrika, Asien
und Australien. Mein Nest baue ich in Gärten, Parks und
Wäldern.
Ich ernähre mich von Insekten, liebe jedoch auch Nüsse,
Samen und Früchte. Mein Gesang ist melodisch und angenehm fürs Ohr.

I enjoy living in mountainous areas and plains, in the open country. My prey is mostly reptiles,
mainly snakes and lizards. I love
soaring over hill slopes, thanks to
my great wingspan of up to 180
cm. My tail is very long and thin
and my head is rather large, but
in harmony with my large wings.
You can hear my musical whistling notes.
Northern lapwing
(Lat. Vanellus vanellus)
I am a lovely long-legged bird with
a wispy crest. I breed on meadows along rivers or lakes and
other short-vegetation habitats.
In the breeding season the male
performs a crazed tumbling display flight. I defend the nest and
young noisily and aggressively
against all intruders. In summer
we migrate towards the south. I
eat worms and snails and love the
Mirna river valley.
Schlangenadler (lat. Circaetus gallicus)
Ich lebe gerne in bergigen aber auch in
flachen Gebieten und in offenen Landschaften, wobei ich mich von Schlangen
und Eidechsen ernähre. Ich fliege mit
den kräftigen Schlägen meiner langen
Flügel, die eine Spannweite bis zu 180
cm haben. Mein Schwanz ist sehr lang
und dünn, doch habe ich einen großen
Kopf, im Einklang mit meinen großen
Flügeln. Sie können mein melodisches
Pfeifen hören.
Kiebitz (lat. Vanellus vanellus)
Ich bin ein herrlicher Vogel mit hohen
Beinen, und auf dem Kopf trage ich eine
Haube, bzw. Federholle. Ich brüte auf
Wiesen entlang der Küste, in Sumpfgebieten neben Seen und Feldern.
Der Hochzeitsflug des Männchens ist
ein wahres akrobatisches Kunststück.
Durch kreischende Laute verteidige ich
meine Familie Tag und Nacht vor Eindringlingen. Im Sommer ziehen wir von
Norden nach Süden. Ich ernähre mich
von Würmern und Schnecken und halte
mich gerne im Flusstal der Mirna auf.

The real beauty of the submarine world can
be seen in the cave below Galebove stijene
near Pula. The rock it cuts into attracts a
great number of swimmers and deep-sea
lovers. By diving at a depth of six meters,
the sunrays play with the crystal clear sea
forming an entire rainbow of colors. Everyone who dives into this magnificent cave will
surely be fascinated by the abundance of
plant and animal life. The soft corals with
their deep yellow color make this cave even
more attractive. In addition to Galebove stijene, after completing your diving course,
be sure to dive in the Brijuni archipelago,
Fraškera caves in Medulin, Punta near Budava, close to Marčana and Crna punta in
Rabac.
Die wahre Schönheit der Unterwasserwelt kann einen in
der Grotte am Fuße der Felsen von Galebovi (Möwenfelsen) in der Umgebung von Pula bezaubern. Der Fels
der sich in diese eingeschnitten hat, ist sehr attraktiv für
Badende, sowie auch für Liebhaber der Meerestiefen. Die
Sonnenstrahlen haben sich beim Eintauchen in eine Tiefe
von sechs Metern im durchsichtigen Wasser gespielt und
dabei ein Zusammenspiel der Regenbogenfarben erzeugt.
Jeder der in dieser wunderschönen Grotte untertaucht,
wird die reiche Pflanzen- und Tierwelt genießen. Die weichen Korallen mit ihrer stumpfen gelben Farbe verleihen
der Grotte ein noch attraktiveres Aussehen. Nach dem
abgeschlossenen Taucherkurs sollte man, neben den
Felsen von Galebovi (Möwenfelsen) auch in das Archipel
von Brijuni, in die Grotten Fraškera in Medulin, in Punta
bei Budava in der Nähe von Marčana und Crna punta in
Rabac eintauchen.

Parenzana - the trail of health
and friendship
The new sports and recreational trail that offers
magical and breathtaking vistas of Istria has a
reconstructed section of the one-time railway
line that connected Poreč and Trieste. The Istrian section of Parenzana meanders through
wonderful valleys, over green hills, through
vineyards and along olive groves all the way
to medieval towns. The entire trail is marked
with characteristic yellow signposts providing
information on historical viaducts, tunnels and
railway stations that you will discover on this
challenging journey.
History
From 1902 Parenzana connected 33 towns of
the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and in terms
of infrastructure it was extremely important for
the development of the entire area. Wine was
mainly transported from the Istrian interior to
royal and imperial courts so the railway was
also popularly known as the wine railway. After World War I the region came under Italian
rule and in 1935, due to the economic crisis
this section passing through Italy, Slovenia and
Croatia (Istria) was closed down.

erkennbare gelbe Tafeln und bieten Ihnen dabei Informationen über die historischen Talbrücken, Tunnels und
Bahnhöfe, die Sie auf diesem herausfordernden Weg
entdecken werden.
Geschichte
Seit dem Jahr 1902 hat die Parenzana 33 Orte der
damaligen österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie
verbunden und war auch infrastrukturell von großer
Wichtigkeit für die Entwicklung der Gegend. Aus Istrien wurden vorwiegend Weine bis zu den Kaiser- und
Königshöfen im Inneren befördert, aus diesem Grund
war die Strecke beim Volk auch bekannt als Weinstraße.
Nach dem ersten Weltkrieg fiel die Region Italien zu und
die Wirtschaftskrise im Jahre 1935 führte zur Löschung
dieses Teils, der heute durch Italien, Slowenien und
Kroatien (Istrien) führt.

Vela draga educational trail
Lehrweg Vela draga
Vela draga has been protected by law as a “natural
area reserve” since 1963 and since 1998 as a geomorphologic monument of nature. The trail passes
along the edge of the canyon of the same name
and thanks to its interpretation tables, introduces
this monument of great morphologic value. The
geologic phenomenon of the origins of the Učka
massif and the Vela draga canyon are explained
within the tables. Above the canyon, you can take
a break at an organised viewpoint and watch the
tower-shaped rocks rising up from the canyon itself.
These trails teach about alpinism and free climbing,
sports that have been practiced in Vela draga since
back in 1931 when the legendary alpinist, Emilio
Comici, created the first alpine route in the Veliki
toranj - by climbing it, of course.

Vela draga ist gesetzlich seit dem Jahre 1963 als
‘Reservat natürlicher Landschaft’ geschützt und
seit 1998 als geomorphologisches Naturdenkmal.
Der Weg führt am Rande des imposanten Canyon
vorbei und mit Hilfe der aufgestellten Interpretationstafeln wird dieses geomorphologische wichtige
Denkmal vorgestellt. Die Tafeln erklären das geologische Phänomen der Entstehung des Massivs von
Učka und des Canyons Vela draga. Oberhalb des
Canyons, auf dem eingerichteten Aussichtsturm,
kann man durchatmen und die Türme betrachten, die sich aus den Canyons erheben. Der Weg
lehrt auch über den Alpinismus und dem freien
Klettern, Sportarten die bereits seit 1931 in Vela
draga anwesend sind, als der legendäre Alpinist
Emilio Comici in Veliki toranj den ersten alpinen
Weg erklettert hat.

Adrenalin Park, up in the trees, consists of winding paths situated high up within the forest itself.
The construction made of steel slings, ropes and
platforms is completely safe and suitable for anyone wanting to test their equilibrium, concentration and physical condition. This park represents a
completely new tourist offer and is the ideal place
for both adults and children wanting to experience
their daily dose of adrenaline.
Visitors to Adrenaline Park must have sport clothes
and footwear whilst the equipment necessary for
crossing the platform is included in the price.
There are three paths available in the Park:
The Green path (Zelena staza) has a platform
mounted on a 1.5m elevation and has 8 different
exercises. Part of this path is particularly suitable
for children and is at a height of 1.10m.
On the Blue path (Plava staza) the construction is
mounted at a minimum height of 1.40 to at a maximum of 7m and also has 8 exercises.
The Red path (Crvena staza) is only suitable for
adults and is mounted at a height of 11m with 12
different exercises.

Der Adrenalin Park auf Bäumen setzt sich aus
hängenden Wegen gelegen im Wald zusammen.
Die Installation aus Stahlseilen, Schnüren und Plattformen ist vollkommen sicher und all Jenen angepasst, die das Gleichgewicht, die Konzentration und
die körperliche Kondition erproben möchten. Dieser
Park, als vollkommen neuer touristischer Inhalt, ist
ein idealer Ort an welchem sowohl Kinder als auch
Erwachsene eine Dosis Adrenalin spüren können.
Die Besucher des Adrenalin Parks müssen sportliche Kleidung und Schuhe anhaben, während die
Ausstattung für den Übergang über die Plattform
im Preis inbegriffen ist.
Der Park verfügt über drei Pfade:
Der grüne Pfad, auf welchem die Plattform in 1.5
m Höhe aufgebaut ist, hat 8 Übungen. Auf diesem
Pfad ist ein extra Teil auch für Kinder angepasst,
gelegen in 1.10 Metern Höhe.
Auf dem blauen Pfad ist die Installation auf mindestens 1.40 bzw. auf maximal 7 Metern Höhe angebracht und beinhaltet 8 Übungen.
Der rote Pfad ist auf 11 Metern Höhe und mit 12
Übungen ausschließlich Erwachsenen angepasst.

270 equipped ascents. Istrian
rocks, full of various obstacles,
are demanding both for top athletes and beginners.
Zlatni rt (Golden Cape)
One of the most beautiful and
largest protected park forests in
the Mediterranean, also known as
the international meeting place of
free climbers. On the cliffs rising
from the very seaside there are
some 80 rock-climbing routes,
mostly easier and suitable for beginners. There is also an organized
climbing school under the guidance of professional instructors.
Together with Paklenica National
Park, Zlatni rt (Golden Cape) is the
most famous rock-climbing site in
Croatia with an Outdoor centre
organized at the entrance.
Auf 9 Aufstiegen über die sog. Kurzen
Felsen von 20 bis 30 m Höhe, gibt es
270 ausgerüstete Aufstiege. Auf den istrischen hindernisvollen Felsen können
sowohl die Spitzensportler als auch die
Anfänger erschöpft sein.
Zlatni rt (Goldenes Kap)
Eine der schönsten und größten geschützten Waldanlagen am Mittelmeer
ist auch als ein internationaler Treffpunkt
für Sportkletterer bekannt. An den Felswänden, die direkt vom Meer aus ansteigen, wurden 80 Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten
festgelegt, die meisten davon sind leichterer Art und für Anfänger geeignet. Hier
gibt es auch eine Kletterer-Schule, die
von erfahrenen Lehrern geleitet wird.
Zlatni rt (Goldenes Kap) ist neben dem
Nationalpark Paklenica der bekannteste
Ort in Kroatien für Freunde des Sportkletterns. Am Eingang befindet sich auch
ein organisiertes Outdoor-Center.

Brijuni’s Cretaceous park
Der Kreidepark von Brioni
Right after leaving the boat and landing on the
jetty in Brijuni harbor you can see traces of dinosaurs! In the limestone block brought from one of
Brijuni’s quarries, a three-toed dinosaur’’s footprint
can clearly be seen. It is likely that it belonged to
the huge meat-eating dinosaur of the Theropods
group.
At four sites on Veli Brijun over 200 dinosaurs’ footprints have been discovered, these frightful reptiles
that ruled the Earth during the Mesozoic Era. The
Brijuni dinosaurs can be traced to the Cretaceous
Period (145 to 65 million years ago), so it can be
rightfully said that the island has a “Cretaceous
park”. So far, dinosaurs’ footprints have been discovered at the following sites: Cape Pogledalo,
Ploče, Kamik/Plješivac and Trstike/Debela Glava.
Footprints of some sixty large two-legged meat-eating dinosaurs have been found at Cape Pogledalo

on Vrbanj/Barban peninsula.
By the size of these traces they belonged to Theropods, large nd fierce meat-eaters that while walking
upright in the shallow water of the onetime Tethys
ocean, left their footprints. They were 7 meters long
and were very much like the Allosaurus. These traces are 115 million years old.
At Cape Ploče on Zelenikovac peninsula there are
about sixty footprints of small two-legged meateating dinosaurs which were 3-4 meters long. These
traces most probably belonged to the very fierce
and fast meat-eating dinosaurs from the Coelurosaria group.

Bereits beim Verlassen des Schiffes, an der Mole
des Hafens von Brioni, erwarten Sie Dinosaurier!
In einem Kalksteinblock, der aus einem der Steinbrüche auf Brioni herbeigeschafft wurde, ist der
Fußabdruck eines Dinosauriers mit drei Zehen gut
zu sehen. Allen Anscheins nach gehörte er zu den
mächtigen Freischfressern der
Gruppe der Theropoda.
An vier Fundstellen auf der Hauptinsel der Brioni, Veli Brijun, wurden mehr als 200 Fußabdrücke
von Dinosauriern entdeckt, die
als fürchterliche Reptilien die
Erde in der Zeit des Mesozoikums beherrschten. Im Rahmen
dieses weiten Zeitraums, können
die Dinosaurier von Brioni in die
Kreidezeit eingestuft werden (vor
145 bis 65 Millionen Jahren), so
dass wir sagen können, dass es
auf der Insel einen Kreidepark
gibt. Bis jetzt sind Fußabdrücke
auf den Landzungen Pogledalo,
Ploče, Kamik/Plješivac sowie Trstike/Debela Glava bekannt.
Auf der Landzunge Pogledalo der
Halbinsel Vrbanj/Barban wurden
etwa sechzig Fußabdrücke von
großen Fleischfressern mit zwei
Zehen gefunden, deren Größe
darauf hindeutet, dass sie von
denTheropoda stammen, gewaltigen raubgierigen Fleischfressern,
die ihre Spuren hinterließen, indem sie entlang des seichten
Wassers des damaligen Ozeans
Tethys wanderten. Sie waren
etwa 7 Meter lang und dem Allosaurus am ähnlichsten. Diese
Fußabdrücke entstanden vor 115
Millionen Jahren.
Auf der Landzunge Ploče der
Halbinsel Zelenikovac wurden
etwa sechzig Fußabdrücke von
kleineren 3-4 Meter langen
Fleischfressern mit zwei Zehen
gefunden. Allen Anscheins nach
wurden diese Fußabdrücke
von den sehr aggressiven und
schnellen Fleischfressern aus
der Gruppe Coelurosaurus zurückgelassen.

connects Ranch barba Tone and
Blaz cove famous for its freshwater
spring. After arriving at the cove you
can spend your time admiring the
wonderful scenery and touring the
old mills, horseback riding by the sea,

with tomato sauce spreads all
over the bay and attracts a large
number of visitors.

Pićan, 2. - 3.08.
The Pićan diocese, fifth in the
early Christian world, is mentioned in legends both for its
founding and dissolving. In the
4th century Emperor Constantine the Great had a new church
built as a burial place for the remains of the Christian martyr St.
Niceforo. He commissioned the
church to be built at the very site
where the sailing ship carrying
the chest with the saint’s relics
stopped. Carried by winds, the
sailing ship arrived at the steep
eastern coast of Istria, which
was completely inconvenient for
constructing a church. The relics
were then carried on a donkey
and a new decision was made:
the church would be built at
the site where the donkey first
stopped. The donkey went on
and on, crossing Učka and finally stopping in Pićan and that is
where the church was built.
Das Bistum Pićan, das fünfte in
der vorchristlichen Welt, wird
in den Legenden sowohl seiner
Gründung als auch seines Aussterbens nach gedacht. Kaiser
Konstantin der Große wollte im 4.
Jahrhundert eine neue Kirche errichten lassen, als Ruhestätte für die
sterblichen Überreste des christlichen Erstmärthyers hl. Niceforo.
Er befahl, die Kirche an der Stelle
zu errichten, an der das Segelschiff mit dem verladenen Sarg der
heiligen Reliquien anlegen würde. Den Winden ausgesetzt, kam
das Segelschiff bis zu den steilen
Küsten im Osten Istriens, die für
den Bau einer Kirche ungeeignet
waren, so dass die Reliquien auf
einen Esel geladen wurden, und
ein neues Dekret erging: Die Kirche solle dort errichtet werden,
wo der Esel zum ersten Mal stehen bliebe. Der Esel lief und lief,
überquerte den Berg Učka und
machte in Pićan halt. Dort wurde
dann die Kirche errichtet.

The cave Baredine is a special
destination situated on the even
plain covered with Terra rossa
soil, where grapevines, olives and
other autochthon cultures are
grown. In the pleasant ambience
the visitors are given the opportunity to look into the history of
cultivation through the ethnological collection of old agricultural
machinery and tractors, some
of which had until recently been
used for cultivation. The most

prominent in this collection are
the old tractor Fordson model F
from 1923, the stand-alone diesel
motor Satima (testa calda) from
1934, produced in Trieste, that
was used for the mill operation in
one village until the introduction
of electric energy, a fully running
threshing machine (around 1930),
and a donkey-drawn carriage
(around 1910) with a preserved
licence number and personal
data of the owner. Children can
ride the donkey Pino and get a
remembrance photo.
Die Höhle Baredine ist ein spezifisches Ausflugsziel, sie liegt auf
einem flachen Terrain bedeckt
mit Terra Rossa, rund um dieses
Terrain werden Weinrebe, Oliven
und andere bodenständige landwirtschaftliche Kulturen angebaut. Im angenehmen Ambiente
können die Besucher die Ge-
schichte des Landbaus durch die
ethnologische Sammlung der alten landwirtschaftlichen Maschinen und Traktoren, von denen
manche bis vor kurzem für die
Bebauung benutzt wurden. Aus
dieser Sammlung sind vor allem
der alte Traktor Fordson Modell F
aus dem Jahr 1923 hervorzuheben, stehender Dieselmotor Satima (testa calda) aus dem Jahr
1934, hergestellt in Triest, der bis
zur Einführung der Elektroenergie für den Betrieb der Mühle in
einem Dorf diente, völlig funktionstüchtige Getreidedreschmaschine (aus dem Jahr 1930), und
ein von Eseln gezogener Wagen
(aus dem Jahr 1910) mit aufbewahrten Kennzeichen und Daten
über den Besitzer. Kinder können
den Esel Pino reiten und ein Foto
als Erinnerung bekommen.

of making a sculpture dedicated to
this celestial axis, made of soil, stone
and dry-stone wall. Don’t miss stopping exactly halfway between the
Equator and the North Pole.
Im Dorf Golaš neben Bale reicht der

wie auch überall anderswo. Die Erkenntnis, dass durch seine Umrundung
die 45. Parallele führt, veranlasste die
Einheimischen dazu, dass sie für diese himmlische Achse eine Skulptur
auf Erden anfertigten; aus Erde, Stein
und Trockenwand. Verpassen Sie es
nicht, genau auf halbem Weg der Sphäre zwischen dem Äquator und dem
Nordpol stehen zu bleiben.
