Library Spotlight: Meadowridge Kitchen a Valuable Asset
On a recent blustery winter afternoon, a group of kids, teens and
adults gathered in the new Meadowridge Library kitchen to warm
up with a cup of hot chocolate.
“It was just fantastic,” said Library Supervisor Alice Oakey. “The
kids, especially, said thank you, and when they did, they made sure
we had eye contact with them. They wanted to make sure we knew
they were thankful.
“We just love the ability to do spontaneous things like that (with the
kitchen).”
The commercial kitchen, part of a shared space between the library
and the neighboring Meadowood Neighborhood Center, is an
unusual asset for a library, Oakey said: Madison Public Library’s
Meadowridge is one of just a couple libraries in the nation equipped
with one. It’s proving to be extremely useful for a variety of events
that build community, serve library customers’ needs, and educate
all ages — especially youth — on how to prepare nutritious snacks
and meals.
“We’ve had programs where different chefs come in where they teach
how to make tortillas, sauces, cupcakes — all sorts of things,” Oakey
said. “We’re looking to add more of these programs.”
In late January, the library hosted its first potluck-style community
supper using $7,500 in Pop! Challenge grant funds raised by
Madison Public Library Foundation. About 60 people attended,
and the foundation funds made it possible for the library to provide
a main dish, dessert, salad and rolls. The library plans to host the
suppers from 5:30–7:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month through
the end of August, with the hopes of moving the event outdoors to
Meadowood Park in the final summer months.
There is a great demand for the After-School Snack Program that
is under way, thanks to assistance from the neighborhood center,
Madison Metropolitan School District and MSCR. “We just have so
many kids in the neighborhood who need an evening meal,” Oakey
said. “We want to offer it even more days each week.”

Coalition began hosting lunchtime meals in the kitchen and shared space
in late November. The meals, which meet U.S.D.A. nutrition guidelines,
are available each Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m., and
free transportation to and from the library is offered. The coalition
encourages donations to offset costs, but no one is turned away.
While the kitchen sees a lot of action, the shared space as a whole
is hosting many non-food-related events too, Oakey said. On
Wednesday mornings, an exercise ball class meets there. Toddler and
preschool story times are held weekly. On Fridays, a play literacy
program draws families to the shared space, with at least a halfdozen different languages spoken by those in attendance. The space
is also home to teen programs like the Minecraft Club, and a women
and girls neighborhood empowerment group.
“We’re so happy when grassroots things pop up because we can do
all this planning and strategizing, but none of it has the power or
force of what comes straight from the community,” Oakey said.
The Meadowridge Library Endowment Fund accepts donations year-round
to support programs, services and collections. Contribute at mplfoundation.

FOUNDATION NEWS
Inquiring Minds
We Want to Know …
Q:
Why did Madison Public Library
Foundation recently develop a values
statement?
We asked Madison Public Library patrons at Alicia Ashman and
Central libraries: What library resource do you use the most?
“The children’s stuff is the most necessary
thing in our lives right now. We live in
Mazomanie and come here on Wednesday
nights when my older daughter is at activities
nearby. (My younger daughter) likes the
puzzles.”
—Emily,
interviewed at Alicia Ashman Library
A:
Since the foundation was established in
1993, its mission has been to support the
library’s facilities, services and programs, with
Tom DeChant
a vision of providing leadership and resources
to help develop and sustain a world-class library system. The
foundation’s most recent strategic plan encouraged us to explictly
identify core values for our organization to further define this
mission and vision.
“I come here after work to do citizenship
test practice. I study English as a Second
Language. When I’m bored, I play chess and
watch movies. The space is comfortable. I
sometimes go to Middleton Public Library too
— they’re both on the way home.”
Why does a values statement matter? Simply put, the values
of a nonprofit organization represent what it stands for, and
guide decision-making for current and future leaders. They’re
a framework to which we can consistently apply practically
everything, such as questions related to growth, strategy or
organizational culture. The values are ultimately a reflection of
everything we do, especially how we interact and communicate
with our supporters.
The board recently approved the following values:
1. Support — enabling Madison Public Library to achieve its vision
to learn, share and create
2. Leadership — exemplifying foundation and community
leadership
3. Integrity – building trust through transparency and wise use of
organizational resources
4. Inclusiveness – providing opportunities for all residents to be
library patrons, volunteers and donors
5. Advocacy – amplifying the voice of the library and its patrons
With every donation made to the foundation and with every grant
issued from the foundation to the library, these values ensure
that our organization is doing the best it possibly can to reach all
Madisonians; to stand up for the library and its customers; to be
transparent financially; and to further the library’s vision.
Thank you to our Marketing Committee volunteers for developing
these important principles that make our intentions clear to those
working on behalf of the foundation, as well as to all who choose to
support us — whether today or in years to come.
—Tsering,
interviewed at Alicia Ashman Library
“I don’t have a cable or internet hookup at my
home, so I use the library most for Internet
access and DVD rentals. I would rather get them
here for free than paying for a streaming service!
— Ron,
interviewed at Central Library
“We just moved here, and we love coming here
for story time as well as for all the books available
for kids. Children’s books are expensive to buy,
especially with the number of books she likes to
look at!
— Zhe & daughter Kate,
interviewed at Central Library
“I probably use all the kids’ resources the most,
for my son’s sake. He enjoys coming here a lot.
We will read books together and come for all the
programs.”
— Shawn,
interviewed at Central Library

LIBRARY NEWS
From the Director’s Desk
Recently, our Alicia Ashman Library was
able to help out the nearby Middleton
Public Library during an unexpected
closure due to building repairs. Within
days, Middleton staff had set up shop in
a section of the Alicia Ashman Library,
staff at both libraries and the South
Central Library System worked together
to re-route library holds, and Middleton
moved library programs to its city hall.
This is just one example of the many
ways local libraries cooperate and work
together to best serve our communities.
Shared materials delivery, a shared catalog and seamless
borrowing of materials throughout the library system serve us
all well.
Greg Mickells,
Director of Madison
Public Library
When I give tours to community groups, they are always amazed
at the scope and importance of our daily operations. When a
library user searches for a new book, places a hold, and receives
a notice several days later that it is available at their local library,
it’s a quick and easy process. But for that to happen, library staff
purchase, receive, unpack, catalog, label, shelve, retrieve, deliver,
unpack and check in each of the 1.2 million holds requested by
library customers each year. To meet that demand, at Madison
Public Library alone we added nearly 80,000 items to our
collection last year. Overall, we checked out over 4 million items
in 2015.
It is absolutely amazing when you think of the numbers and
what it takes from everyone in the organization to make this core
service a reality for the community. Each staff member contributes
to making the customer’s use of our resources a fantastic
experience. Be sure to thank your local library staff the next time
you pick up your hold — that item has been touched by many
different people on its journey to you.
Middleton Public Library customers pick up their holds at

The exhibit consists of four
components: writing, visual art, musical recordings and dramatic
readings. An online version of the exhibit will host expanded
content and increase accessibility for those who cannot visit in
person.
Local filmmaker Marc Kornblatt of Refuge Films has produced a
web series featuring the artists, along with a documentary about
the exhibit. An opening reception featuring a screening of the
documentary will be held Thursday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in The
Bubbler. Regional artists and activists will present workshops in
The Bubbler throughout the month. The exhibit will travel to other
local libraries for the remainder of spring.
Artists in Absentia is an initiative of the Oakhill Prison Humanities
Project, a UW-Madison organization that offers evening classes
for inmates at Oakhill Correctional Institution, a men’s minimumsecurity facility. The project allows participants to engage with a
variety of texts, develop art and communication skills, and share
a collaborative space for the exchange of ideas. Volunteers have
led courses in drama/performance, creative writing, art, literature
and history. Learn more at artistsinabsentia.com.

Four Libraries Hosting Job Assistance Specialists
Libraries have long served as a valuable resource for those seeking
employment or looking to advance their job skills. Madison Public
Library recently began working with a variety of community partners
to increase learning opportunities in the areas of computer training,
resume writing, general business writing, social media and networking.
This year, the library introduced a new partnership called JobConnect. The partnership increases opportunities for library customers to
connect directly to the WorkSmart Network, through which they can
learn more about federally funded programs for low-income residents.
WorkSmart is funded by federal dollars as part of the Workforce
Investment and Opportunities Act (WIOA). WIOA helps job seekers and
workers access employment, education, training and support services
to succeed in the labor market. Locally, funds given to the Workforce
Development Board of South Central Wisconsin fund the WorkSmart
Network through community partners, including Opportunities Inc.,
who hires the full-time Employment Specialists to work with job seekers.
Madison’s libraries will host WorkSmart Network specialists on
the following dates and locations: first Fridays of the month at
Meadowridge Library; second Fridays of the month at Lakeview
Library; third Fridays of the month at Alicia Ashman Library; and
fourth Fridays of the month at Hawthorne Library.
Those who wish to make an appointment with the WorkSmart
employment specialists should call the host library. While the program
targets low-income residents, all library customers may make an
appointment to learn more about it. Visit madisonpubliclibrary.org/
jobs for more information.
Short Story: Meet Library Assistant Tina Marie Maes
Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up on a dairy farm
outside of Glenwood City, Wis. (population 1,200), four
hours northwest of Madison. I was valedictorian of the
Class of 1999 Hilltoppers and moved here to attend UWMadison for engineering. My major quickly switched to
English with an emphasis in creative writing. After a few
years of retail work and volunteering with UW Press, I
attended UW’s School of Library and Information Studies
and graduated in 2010.
the new materials that come in, and I enjoy how the library
world is so cooperative. All of my co-workers through the
years have been great too.
What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have
outside of work? I make jewelry & have my own Etsy
store (PegasusRoseBeads). I also enjoy writing. I am
working on an adult science fiction book.
Maes
What is your role at Madison Public Library, and how long you have
you worked there? I am a cataloguing Library Assistant in the Technical

What do you like to read? Lately, my favorite genre has been
fan fiction, especially MTV’s “Teen Wolf.” I love the worldbuilding talents of Mercedes Lackey, J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien. My
favorite Lackey books would probably be “The Heralds of Valdemar”
series.
What is one thing you couldn’t live without? My sarcastic answer:
oxygen. My real one: Caramel Vanilla Lattes from Espresso Royale, and
music. I like pop, rock, country, metal, alternative, classic rock —pretty
much anything interesting with a beat—except ABBA and opera.

Madison Public Library Celebrates Black History Month
From the revolutionary Black Panthers
to a local author book launch with a
theme of love on Valentine’s Day, Black
history will be celebrated throughout
the month of February at Madison
Public Library. Eleven programs in
February and March will highlight
various contributions – past and
present – of Black poets, storytellers,
activists, politicians, authors, musicians,
storytellers and more. Events began on Friday, February 5, at
the Goodman South Madison Library,
where attendees sang the Black national
anthem, “Lift E’vy Voice and Sing,”
followed by remarks from literary artist Fabu, Black history trivia, and
soul food from Melly Mel’s catering. The following Tuesday saw an
advance screening of “Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” in
partnership with Wisconsin Public Television, where the film director
was in attendance. Upcoming events include film screenings, poetry
readings, traditional storytelling and a book launch by three Madison
authors.
In addition, Central Library will host a month-long art exhibit titled
Racial Justice Maps, featuring the work of geographer Elsa Noterman
and printmaker Anders Zanichkowski who created four maps of
Madison that reflect the experiences of incarceration, homelessness and
indigenous land use. Different maps will be featured weekly across
from the circulation desk on the library’s first floor.
Madison libraries will also feature Black History Month displays
highlighting the contributions of Black Americans past and present.
Follow along as the library highlights books, events and more via
social media all month long on Facebook (Madison Public Library) and
Twitter (@madisonlibrary) using the hashtag #BlackHistoryMonth.
