Heav yw ei gh t Ti tl e Fi gh t ? Round 3
A week after a slugfest at Pocono, Wiggle It Jiggleit and Freaky Feet Pete will battle
again tonight in the $250,000 Graduate Series championship at the Meadowlands
reserved for four-year-olds (Sorry, Always B Miki)
by Ken Weingartner / Harness Racing Communications
Trace Tetrick doesn?t
have to go far to see the
impact that horses such
as Freaky Feet Pete and
Wiggle It Jiggleit are
having on harness racing.
And it has nothing to do
with talking to people at
the stables or racetrack.
He just has to look
around his neighborhood.

?My neighbors don?t
really know much about
racing, but they know I
drive Pete and they all
want to know when he?s racing,?said Tetrick, who lives in
Anderson, IN, and drives Indiana-based Freaky Feet Pete for
trainer Larry Rheinheimer and owners Mary Jo and Marty
Rheinheimer.
?They all want to know about Pete. People want to follow
him and root for him. The sport needs this, something people
can follow.?
Tetrick will be alerting his neighbors to watch the races at
New Jersey?s Meadowlands tonight (July 9) because Freaky
Feet Pete and Wiggle It Jiggleit are ready to go at it again. A
week after meeting in a memorable edition of the Ben
Franklin Stakes, the two headline the $250,000 Graduate
Series pacing championship at the Big M.
The Graduate Series is for four-year-old horses, so Ben
Franklin winner Always B Miki ? who is five ? will not be
joining Freaky Feet Pete and Wiggle It Jiggleit for tonight?s
drama. But that shouldn?t diminish the interest of fans, who
watched Freaky Feet Pete and Wiggle It Jiggleit split four

the gelding has won 31 of 39 career races and earned $2.69
million for the father-son team of co-owner George Teague
Jr. and driver Montrell Teague. Wiggle It Jiggleit also has
finished worse than third only once.
Wiggle It Jiggleit, who is the number two ranked horse in
the current Hambletonian Society / Breeders Crown poll and
Freaky Feet Pete, who is fifth in the rankings, both are
world-record holders.

previous encounters prior to the Franklin.
Freaky Feet Pete finished second to Always B Miki in the
Franklin?s world-record-equaling 1:47 mile at The Downs at
Mohegan Sun Pocono. The stallion, a son of Rockin
Image? Skyway Lori, has won 29 of 34 lifetime races and
earned $1.34 million. He has finished worse than third only
once in his career.
Delaware-based Wiggle It Jiggleit, a son of Mr
Wiggles? Mozzi Hanover who was the Horse of the Year in
2015, finished third in the Franklin. Trained by Clyde Francis,
?Pete has a big following here in Indiana; people always
watch him,?Tetrick said. ?In Delaware, everyone?s got Wiggle.
Everyone wants to follow him and George and Montrell. It?s
nice because people get attached and want to follow it that
way. We need hype like that, where it gets people involved
and gets them to want to come out and watch the races. It?s
just great to be a part of it.?
Wiggle It Jiggleit will start tonight?s Graduate final from
post three. Wiggle It Jiggleit has won eight of 12 starts this
season, including the Battle of Lake Erie, Dorothy Mullin
Invitational, and a preliminary round of the Graduate Series
at Tioga Downs.
?He came out of the (Franklin) well,?Montrell Teague said.
?The draw was good to us, so we?ll be up close and see how
it goes.?

The Franklin was the focus of the harness racing world?s
attention, and received national coverage as well from the
Associated Press, as it brought together a star-studded field
highlighted by Always B Miki, Freaky Feet Pete and Wiggle It
Jiggleit. It was the first time all three of those horses met in
the same race.
?I thought it was fun,?Teague said. ?It?s always more fun
when you win, but you?re not going to win them all. Third is
better than nothing. I was happy with him.
?I?m just glad I?ve got one of the horses causing a lot of
buzz right now, along with Miki and Pete and Mel Mara. I
think it?s all good promotion for the sport.?
Freaky Feet Pete will start the Graduate from post eight.
He has won five of seven races this season, including a
preliminary round of the Graduate at Mohawk. Saturday?s
race will mark his first start at the Meadowlands.
?I think he?ll be able to hold his own,?Tetrick said. ?We drew
outside, but Pete?s versatile and that makes him a big threat.
That?s what makes all three of those horses (Always B Miki,
Freaky Feet Pete, and Wiggle It Jiggleit) great horses. They?re
fast off the gate, they can carry their speed for a long
distance, and it doesn?t have to set up perfectly for them to
win.?
Tonight?s card at the Meadowlands, which begins at 7:15
p.m., also includes the $250,000 Graduate Series trotting
championship, a single elimination for the Crawford Farms
Meadowlands Pace and two Reynolds Memorial divisions for
3-year-old female trotters.
The following is the field for the Graduate Series pacing
championship:

elimination-winning favorites do just that? win. That's about
25 percentage points higher than the final.
9. Brett Pelling won his first Meadowlands Pace as the 6-5
choice in 1995 with Davids Pass (the first of four). But he
needed some good fortune. David's Pass and CA Connection
each finished fourth in the same time, so a coin toss decided
it. Davids Pass won it and then the Pace. CA Connection lost
the coin toss, but won the Pace consolation.
Baker?s Dozen of great
M eadowlands Pace eliminations
In honor of tonight?s lone elimination for the Crawford
Farms Meadowlands Pace, here?s a look at some of the
greatest moments from past Pace eliminations:
1. Riyadh, in 1993, was the first horse to win his Pace
elimination in sub-1:50 when he posted a 1:49.4 victory. That
year, all three Pace elimination winners went 1-2-3 in the
final. Presidential Ball, Life Sign and then Riyadh
2. John Campbell with Hilarion in 1982 and Mike Lachance
with Matts Scooter in 1988 won the Meadowlands Pace final
before they ever won a Pace elimination.
3. Miss Easy in 1991 was the last female to test the boys in
the eliminations. She made a break and had to settle for the
Pace consolations, which she won easily over a horse you
might have heard of: Cambest.
4. In 2008, Somebeachsomewhere and Art Official went 1-2
in their elimination ? five lengths apart. The final was a
different story, with that finish reversed, in a world record
1:47 and only a neck separating them in a race some think is
the greatest in Meadowlands history.
10. The first two years at the Meadowlands for the Pace
(1977 and 1978) the elims and the final were the very same
night. Escort in 1977 won only the final, while Falcon
Almahurst won both in 1978 ? over Horse of the Year
Abercrombie ? in the final.
11. Holborn Hanover was fourth in the 2004 Pace
eliminations and nobody gave him much of a chance in the
final. But he did win it, at a Meadowlands Pace all-time high
ticket of 58-1.
12. Remember that eliminations are just that ?
eliminations. In 2004, not winning his elimination might
have cost trotter Windsongs Legacy, the 2004 Hambletonian
winner, the Horse of the Year title (passing on the Breeders
Crown didn't help either). He was 11-for-14 on the year and
won all six finals he competed in. His three losses all came
in eliminations for those finals.
13. Finally, a quiz? Q. Name the two trainers who can say
the following: I won the Hambletonian twice, the
Meadowlands Pace twice, the HOY twice and had a Triple
Crown winner. A. Blair Burgess and Billy Haughton.
5. The last time the great Niatross lost a race was the 1980
Meadowlands Pace elims, when he was fourth. Niatross was
parked by Safe Arrival through brutal fractions and just did
gain the last spot. Clint Galbraith called this race ? a
fourth-place finish ? the best race Niatross ever went.
6. At Point Blank and Odds On Equuleus were both
Meadowlands Pace runnerups in 1997 and 2013. Not bad,
considering that neither would win a single heat all season.
7. Matts Scooter finished fourth in his 1988 Meadowlands
Pace elim, but bounced back in the final to dominate, the
first for Mike Lachance and likely the horse who got his
career going full blast. Lachance had only relocated to the
Meadowlands full-time a few months earlier.
8. Sixty-five per cent of the Meadowlands Pace

than trotters. So, he became somewhat anti-trotter. He had
an anti-trotter period.
?I was young and wanting to expand my wings and there
was no opportunity to do it with a trotter. So, we had this
two-year-old, who was by the first crop of Penn Hanover
called Decked. His mother was an Adios mare (named
Battling Bess). She was from the last crop of Adios. He was
made to pace, but he loved to trot.
(Editor?s Note: This item originally appeared on the Ontario
Racing website (www.ontarioracing.com) under a section called
For The Love Of Racing which still adds new stories weekly.
Harness Racing Update will periodically republish some stories
from the archives and plans to add original ones here featuring
the stories of participants from across the harness racing world)
?We were stabled at the fairgrounds in Beamsville? and
when I jogged him, I didn?t put the hopples on. One day,
father comes driving in the fairgrounds and I was going a
training mile with (Decked) and was training him on the trot.
He gave me s--- and he said, ?You?re wasting your
goddamned time. How much you going??I told him. I can?t
remember what it was. He said, ?You can hold him together
in 2:20, but he?s bred to pace and he?ll switch over to the
pace as soon as you chirp to him going some speed.??
In a generational sport such as harness racing, the
father-son dynamic can be especially important when
passions, stables and farms pass from one generation to the
next. When your father is a legend, the horse that helps you
achieve a measure of independence and success of your own
can be particularly powerful.
Dr. Hayes was undeterred. ?Another day he drove in and I
just finished training him on the trot and I had gone a mile
in 2:10. He said, ?Yeah, yeah, you got away with it today. You
just put him behind the starting gate with a field of horses
and he?ll switch right over to the pace.?So, I put him behind
the starting gate and he trotted.
So it is that a pacing-bred trotter named Decked came to
be the horse that changed the life of the talented and
quotable veterinarian Dr. John Hayes, who trained ? and
sometimes drove ? such greats as 1981 Meadowlands Pace
winner Conquered and 1984 North America Cup champion
Legal Notice.
?The bottom line is he won his first pari-mutuel start, in
London, in an Ontario Sires Stakes event in October. That was
the day that I somewhat gained a level of independence
from my father where I was able to make a decision and he
didn?t have to tell me I was full of it.?
by Dave Briggs, courtesy Ontario Racing
Hayes, formerly of Beamsville, ON and now living in
Grimsby, is the son of the late John Hayes, Sr., the Canadian
Hall of Fame trainer perhaps best known for winning the
1972 Little Brown Jug with Strike Out. Apart from being a
talented horseman, Hayes, Sr. also served 10 years as the
president of Standardbred Canada?s predecessor the
Canadian Trotting Association, where he was instrumental in
computerizing racing records.
Decked raced at both gaits in his two- and three-year-old
seasons, but stuck to the trot after that. In six racing seasons,
Decked earned $140,000 as a trotter and a little more than
$3,000 on the pace.
Decked was foaled in 1978 at a pivotal point in the
relationship of the two horsemen.
?Let?s just say it was a father-son relationship thing. Father
was cutting back, phasing out and I was taking over the
operation,?Hayes said. ?But it didn?t all happen in one day.?
Dr. Hayes said his father started out with nothing but
trotters, but, ?once he became a horse racing politician,
president of Standardbred Canada, etc., he became acutely
aware that the public tends to be happier betting on pacers

Rock I t Scott posts fastest NYSS
division
Rock It Scott won the fastest of four $40,000+ New York
Sire Stakes (NYSS) divisions for two-year-old pacing colts
Friday (July 8) at Saratoga with a 1:54.3 victory. It was the
pari-mutuel debut for the son of Roll With Joe out of Vanite
Semalu who was driven to victory by Matt Kakaley for trainer
Ron Burke.
The colt is owned by Burke Racing Stable LLC of
Fredericktown, PA, Our Horse Cents Stables of Melville, NY
and J&T Silva Stables, LLC of Long Beach, NY.
Miso Fast (Roll With Joe? Sakura Hanover) won the first
NYSS division with a 1:55 victory for the exact same
connections, while Music Is Art (Art Major? Music Row) won
his NYSS division gate-to-wire with Wally Hennessey at the
helm for trainer Steve Elliott and owners Peter Blood of
Pompano Beach, FL and Rich Berks of Boca Raton, FL, who
purchased Music Is Art for $85,000 at the 2015 Standardbred
Horse Sales Company?s yearling sale in Harrisburg, PA.
Pointomygranson (American Ideal? Sangaal) made a break
near the wire, but hung on to win the final division in 1:55.1
for driver Jim Morrill, Jr., trainer Chris Ryder and owner Gold
Standard Equine LLC of Greenacres, FL.
Fillies I mpress in I ndiana Sires
Stakes A ction
After a week?s worth of stakes action, the pacing fillies took
their turn in the spotlight Friday (July 8) as Hoosier Park
Racing & Casino played host to the $75,000 Indiana Sires
Stakes finals for both the two and three-year-old pacing
fillies. It was the opening round of the $75,000 finals for the
two-year-old competitors and the second round of $75,000
finals for the sophomore competitors.
The three-year-old pacing fillies kicked off the stakes
action for the evening and it was Seventimesavirgin and
John DeLong who delivered as the heavy betting favorite to
score in a new lifetime best of 1:51.1. Using the Hoosier Park
passing lane to her advantage, Seventimesavirgin notched
her second consecutive victory to make a clean sweep of the
second round of the stakes action.
Leaving from post three, Seventimesavirgin protected her
inside position, but Endeavors Fantasy and Sam Widger also
left alertly to grab the first call in :26.1. It was a bit of give
and go as DeLong sent Seventimesavirgin back out to the
front but just as she grabbed command at the half in :54.2
Topville Cadillac and Tyler Smith were up to take the lead.
Topville Cadillac continued to call the shots at the
three-quarter clocking in 1:23.3, but the rest of the field was
closing in. Seventimesavirgin sat patiently in the pocket
before DeLong found late racing room up the passing lane
and she powered home using a :27.1 final quarter.
Seventimesavirgin finished three lengths in front of a
hard-charging Aux D Lox Bluegrass while Topville Cadillac
held on for third.
?The trip never works out like you think it will,?DeLong
said with a smile in the winner?s circle. ?She raced very well,
she doesn?t like having to wait, she always wants to go but
she loves to pace home. She?s just awesome.?

notched her fifth victory of the season from six starts.
Seventimesavirgin has now amassed $182,240 lifetime while
winning 10 of 18 lifetime outings.
A little later in the evening, Rockin Serena and Trace Tetrick
powered off cover to score as the longest shot on the board
in the $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes final for two-year-old
pacing fillies. Sent off at odds of 44-1, Rockin Serena was
able to overcome post position nine and used the long
Hoosier Park stretch to her advantage to score in a new
lifetime best of in 1:55. The victory was also one of five
winners on the program for Tetrick, Hoosier Park?s leading
driver.
Owned by Kales Co., Dolne Farm Services, S&R Racing
Stables, and Wrenn Racing, Rockin Serena is trained by
Melanie Wrenn and notched her first win from two starts.
The daughter of Rockin Image? Day Lily Hanover has now
earned $37,900 lifetime for her connections.
With the wins, both Rockin Serena and Seventimesavirgin
also earned points for the $200,000 Indiana Sires Stakes
Super Finals slated for Oct. 15 at Hoosier Park. The Indiana
Sires Stakes program will culminate with the top 10 point
earners from the previous $75,000 finals in each division
returning to compete in the super finals.
Indiana Sires Stakes action returns to Hoosier Park tonight
(July 9) with the second of five $75,000 Indiana Sires Stakes
finals for the three-year-old pacing colts. With a daily post
time of 5:45 p.m., live racing at Hoosier Park Racing &
Casino will follow a Tuesday through Saturday schedule and
be conducted through Nov. 12.

She's A Billionair sets Buffalo
track mark in NYSS
She's A Billionair's front-running style paid big dividends in
the New York Sire Stakes for the two-year-old filly pacers on
Wednesday night (July 6) at Buffalo Raceway as she set a
new track record for that classification with an easy
three-length win over Artrageous in 1:56.2.
The time erased the old mark of 1:56.3 established in 2011
by Silky Purse and tied by Summertime Lea in 2012.
It was also great night for driver Tim Tetrick, owner Ken
Jacobs and trainer Linda Toscano, as the trio teamed up to
win two Sire Stake divisions. Robin Jwas the fastest winner
for the connections with a gate-to-wire victory in 1:57.2
while stablemate Planet Rock covered the fast Hamburg
half-mile oval in 1:58.
Okidoki Blue Chip (Jim Morrill Jr.) took the final $27,750 leg
by rolling to a 1:59.0 triumph over Rollingndiamonds (Brett
Miller).
She's A Billionair ($10.20) was in command the entire mile
as she stepped off panels of :29, :58.4 and 1:28.1. There was
little doubt who the winner was going to be in the stretch as
Brett Miller was in a prone position under the wire with
She's A Billionair in 1:56.2. Artrageous (Jim Morrill Jr.) was
second best while Yourlipstogodsears (Tetrick) took third.
The Winbak Farm-bred She's A Billionair (Artiscape? She's
Game) is owned by Frank Chick and trained by Dylan Davis.
