Customer satisfaction, together with the pressure of decreasing production costs, requires more flexible alternatives. One of them is digital print. igital print (or “Print on Demand”) reduces production time of printing orders, thus simplifying and increasing the efficiency of production. From beginning to end, all data is digitally processed and printed directly without any films or printing plates. This ensures the customer receives the publication: D - within the requested time - with actual content - in the requested number of copies It’s hard to say exactly how profitable digital printing is when compared to offset printing, because the exact price level depends on many factors. But the approximate level is based on an average circulation of 1,000 copies (see graph beside). To become more competitive in this field of printing, we began to test our coated and uncoated thin printing papers in digital print, throughout the last quarter of 2004. This took place in a modern, medium-sized printing house located in the Price per page 06 digital print offset print No. of pieces www.paperisbetter.com The tests started with uncoated grades produced in Olšany, namely OP Book© 40 and 50 g/m2 in standard technical specifications. In early February we then began to test Tervakoski’s uncoated OP Opaque Cream© 50 and 60 g/m2 and coated TerStar Plus© 50 g/m2 also in standard technical specifications. The tests were carried out from reel to reel, on the digital printing machine OCÉ Vario Stream 7200. The relative humidity was only 23% – 27% in the production hall and the results, especially in uncoated grades, were excellent for both printing and converting. The results on coated grades were also very good. We would like to thank the team at TYPOS Digital Print for their support and for giving us the opportunity to test our products. W ith vast knowledge and experience of fine paper, Peter has represented a local (Australian) mill for 15 years; the Finnish paper industry since 1980 with paper agencies; and the last 6 years with Stora Enso, from the date of the merger of Enso Gutzeit and Stora. He was General Manager Victoria but had nationwide and New Zealand responsibility for their specialty products which included book papers, laminating papers, coreboards and liquid packaging boards. Peter has been involved with selling Tervakoski ThinPrint Paper for some 25 years and more recently, actively promoting and selling the Olšany range. During his regular visits to Finland and the Czech Republic, Peter has not only made strong business relationships, but also lasting friendships which he looks forward to continuing in the years to come. Peter will concentrate solely on T.S.P. qualities and will bring forth new ideas to ensure the current market leadership in this region is maintained. A family man, Peter is married to Ann with two children and four grandchildren. He is a keen sportsman, playing golf and tennis on a regular basis and walking some 8-10 kms per day. Traditionally the nature of the business has been very small and based on spot business. But this is going to change – in fact, it has already changed! he network of independent agencies that was built up during the last year, has already brought new ThinPrint orders to the group and expanded the customer base in these regions. For example, an order from Chile was received in February exceeding 500 tons of TerSilk for printing of manuals. Certainly there is no universal recipe to use but let’s share some of our successful steps which will hopefully lead to a new way of doing pharma business in the territories of south-eastern Europe. t all started in Bulgaria two years ago when we began to supply one of the most advanced printing houses in Sofia with OP Medical Print 45 g/m2. By the end of 2003, we sold an annual result of 6 tons of paper thanks to the excellent work of our Bulgarian agent and his relationships with printing houses and a representative of the pharma company Balkanpharma - the biggest in Bulgaria. The representative occupying the position of printing and packaging expert, was a man desperately looking for new packaging solutions which would enable him to differ Balkanpharma’s products from their competitors. We were invited to one of the regular so called trend meetings, held between the competitors. I With Balkanpharma and the back-selling policy we managed to get OP Medical print 45 g/m2 through the certification process. In July 2004 the certification came to an end; OP Medical Print 45 g/m2 came into force as a number 1 grade for printing 65% of Balkanpharma’s medical leaflets and the annual contract for 2005 came into existence. This year Balkanpharma was renamed “Actavis”, which is the new name for the Pharmaco group of companies who has been trading for many years under a variety of names in more than 20 countries. Companies producing medicines are included except those in Bulgaria, Malta, Turkey and Serbia. The other subsidiaries are only trade companies. With reference from the Bulgarian Actavis, we have an even better chance to succeed with Actavis in Serbia where we would like to establish and use the same model in the near future. Dragon in China and its partner Hing Tai Hong Paper Ltd. co-sponsored the paper and binding materials for limited edition Commemorative The spark which first inspired its creation was ignited during the International Book Fair in Beijing when Mr. Luk ChiCheong, Hong Kong designer of the album, came across the Trierenberg ThinPrint Magazine “Top Paper” and Image Book which were both printed on TerStar Plus 65 g/m2. “The unique Chinese silk texture and the special design of the butterfly folding pages was utterly inspirational”. Mr. Luk made a decision with Oxford University Press China, to use TerStar Plus to create the special pages of this album. T Biography of Madam Bai Xuesian Bai Xuesian was born in April, 1926 in Guangzhou, mainland China. After finishing her secondary education in Hong Kong, she soon became immersed in the world of Cantonese opera. At the age of 12, she trained under Xue Luexian and performed with the Juexiansheng Opera Troupe. She began to make an impact during the war, performing for various troupes. She became the leading player for the Juntianhua Opera Troupe by the age of 16. Following this time, she joined the Xinsheng Troupe and began a long association with fellow actor Ren Juanhui (who specialized in male roles). In 1956, she formed the Xianfengming Opera Troupe in partnership with Ren Jianhui. The partnership was a long-lasting one for the pair, who are also firm friends in private life. Both retired from the stage in 1966 for health reasons. Hailed affectionately as the “Opera Fans’ Lover”, Bai Xuesian has made more than 300 films in her illustrious career and has been a household name in Cantonese speaking communities across the world since the early 1950s. She and Ren Jianhui remain active in supporting and training new talent under the banner of the Chufengming Opera Troupe. A serious and innovative performer, her contribution to the art of Cantonese opera remains profound. She received an honorary doctoral degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1996 and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001. The album is published only for anniversary and charity shows. 14 Trierenberg ThinPrint Paper A family affair By Joe Kofler, Trierenberg ThinPrint Paper It’s 9am on Sunday the 17th of April and I’m clutching a handful of snow, trying to slow down the bleeding of my hand... I’ve cut myself on the super-sharp edge of Kalle Palander’s 8.5kg Atomic skis! awoke early to take advantage of a lifetime opportunity .. to join our Finnish ski champion on his morning training session at RUKA. Arriving to the slope at 7:30am, it appeared the whole village was sleeping. The only sounds to be heard was the hum of the ski lift, the clicking of boot buckles, the whoosh of skis gliding down a glistening slope and the morning whistles from the birds. A clear blue sky and glowing sunshine set the idyllic scene for what Kalle refers to as, ‘a nice day in the office!’ I Kalle’s dedicated father and lifetime couch, Jouni, had already prepared the course and Kalle´s elder brother Keke, was also there for time keeping and support. It was a pleasant display of family loyalty and commitment to encourage a son and brother in his training regime. For it’s at this time when the season is over, that Kalle needs to stay motivated and maintain his fitness. By trying to mirror each run and stay in Kalle’s tracks, I gained a serious amount of respect and admiration for the speed, accuracy and ‘no fear’ required in this sport. The hidden fire or spark in Kalle’s eyes proves to us that he has what it takes. Today Kalle was not only training; he was testing ‘which ski fits best’. Atomic offer a great diversity of skis and it’s important for Kalle to find his perfect pair. Perfect might not mean the fastest. Some of the faster skis can cause other problems on the race, so it’s a matter of finding a pair that is fast but stable at the same time. Times for 3 different sets of skis with varied widths were recorded. After 15 practise runs and a best time of 31.81 seconds, Kalle deserved a cup of coffee! There’s something Kalle can do faster than skiing ...and that’s eat a chocolate muffin! So after having recharged his energy he shared his thoughts on last season’s performance. 2004 felt a little different to Kalle .. for a while he was ‘the skier’, having won 8 World Cup Slaloms. Until now he used to dominate in Slalom; now he is happy to have achieved great results in Giant Slalom.. His aim or focus at the moment is the Olympic Games and to get there in peak condition, Kalle will spend his summer training twice a day, six days a week. In between lifting weights, cycling, swimming and more, he spends his day off with his lovely partner, Katja. Having never held a job outside of skiing, we feel it’s time Kalle has some hands on experience! Hello Tervakoski!! In Summer this year, he will join our Team at the Mill for 3 days of hard work. Kalle’s eagerly looking forward to this and wants to spend lots of time with ‘the workers’ and learn more about making paper. He is keen to move through different departments to get an overall understanding of our business. For those taking summer vacations, Kalle will be happy to fill in! US T.S.P. US provides sales and customer service to the North American market. The Trierenberg products sold here are all produced in Europe, namely Finland and the Czech Republic. W hile some customers are able to forecast projects far enough in advance to allow for paper production and delivery direct from mill to printer, others require shorter lead times that cannot be met in that way. It isn’t a matter of customer forecasting inefficiency; it is simply the nature of certain market segments. Should that mean we are not able to serve those customers? Absolutely not! The answer is found in mill commitment to invest in local inventories and teaming-up with the right warehousing and logistics partners. T.S.P. US is well into our second decade of collaboration with Carolina Public Warehouse Inc, located in Winston- “From its original 40.000 square foot facility, it has expanded through the years to its current 255.000 square foot operation.” Salem, North Carolina. The paper with a higher opacity, rigidity and semi-gloss surface compared to a matt surface paper, was attached as an insert into major newspapers and printed media. The amount of coded inserts was roughly 8 million, mixed in random order so the test was statistically robust. The surprising result showed that the response rate with better surface and higher opacity paper went up by an amazing 4.5% and at the same moment, the customer got almost 1.000.000 inserts for free. France and the EU-Referendum By Marc Montbertrand, T.S.P. France The French Government decided to organise a referendum for the European Constitution. By the 29th of May this year, we voted for or against the resolutions present in this Constitution. ome countries including Spain, The Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic have decided to proceed in the same way. Interestingly however, the French President is interested in the public’s opinion and has decided to send this constitution to all French citizens. S Of the volumes received, the most suitable decision was to produce part of this order at Feurstein on PM 3. Experts from Tervakoski and OP papírna defined the parameters that had to be respected, in order to achieve an adequate quality on 40 g/m2 ThinPrint paper at Feurstein. “The French President decided to send the EU-Referendum to all French citizens. That makes 48.5 million copies, 192 pages each. A volume of 12.000 tons of paper.” At the beginning of March it was decided to print 192 pages of this document and distribute 48.5 million copies to French citizens. What’s incredible is that they decided to use 40 g/m2 uncoated ThinPrint paper with offset printing. The result in volume was 12,000 tons of paper, representing the biggest order ever placed even when compared to rotogravure. Even the printers had not seen this kind of order. To accommodate this request, we utilised all ThinPrint Mills in the Trierenberg portfolio. Meetings were organised to discuss planning for such orders in the future and the best way of how to fulfil the needs of the customer and the volumes required. Initially, this was an extraordinary challenge. The first deliveries of paper to the biggest printers in Europe, began in March. For the Trierenberg Group, this has been a great opportunity to achieve great exposure and advertising from realistic and measurable results, at the same time. Regards from France! www.paperisbetter.com 31 The Bible in a changing world By Derek Hill, United Bible Societies The Bible has been fundamental to such things as the abolition of slavery in the UK and the establishment of the American constitution, as Christians sought to apply Biblical principles in history tells us that the H owever, Church was not always in favour of ordinary people being able to read the Bible for themselves. Some of the first Bibles imported into the UK were bought by a Bishop not to be read but to be burnt! Ironically, this provided the funding for more Bibles to be printed. Today although Bible translations in the First World are available in every style, from “street” language to literary English, and every format from paperback novel to MP3, the greatest demand and thirst is coming from the rapidly growing Third World churches of Africa, Asia and South America. Meeting needs The British and Foreign Bible Society was established in 1804 in recognition of the need for the Bible to be available not just in the UK, but throughout the world. Many Bible Societies were established around the world and in 1946 the United Bible Societies was formed as a coordinating body. Its charter states: “The world fellowship of national Bible Societies joins together, as the United Bible Societies, for consultation, mutual support and action in their task of achieving the widest possible, effective and meaningful distribution of the Holy Scriptures and of helping people interact with the Word of God. Bible Societies seek to carry out their task in partnership and co-operation with all Christian churches and with church-related organisations.” “Paper is the single most important material in the production of Bibles.” Today the Bible Societies distribute between 21 to 25 million Bibles annually. The number of Gospels and portions of scriptures produced annually is in the hundreds of millions. Together, the Bible Societies are the largest distributor of the Bible globally. In Bible manufacturing, the paper element can be between 40 to 60 per cent of the total unit cost and therefore represents the biggest cost element involved. Reasons for this are: high pagination: normally 1.200 - 1.400 pages and sometimes as high as 2.000 pages. There is a move to re-typeset to reduce the average number of pages to about 1.000 - 2.000 pages i.e. a reduction of about 17%. the paper weight: normally 28 g/m2 to 36 g/m2 and can sometimes be as little as 22 g/m2 (80 g/m2 could be considered to be a board weight!) Opacity: as Bible Societies migrate to lower weights, opacity is becoming increasingly important. Quantity: Bible production by Bible Societies utilises about 20.000 tonnes of paper annually. More than half of the requirement is purchased by printing companies. Globalisation Bible publishers used to look within their own country for production; then within their own continent, until eventually South Korea became a magnet for this work. More recently, globalisation has led to European/American publishers placing Bible production in other continents, especially in India and China where there is a lot of web capacity for long runs. Derek Hill, United Bible Societies. Opportunities The real opportunities are: Sheets: much of the work is for minority languages and involves short-runs and therefore sheet-fed. There is a constant pressure on publishers (and Bible www.paperisbetter.com Societies are no exception to this) to lower their inventories and therefore their print quantities. Value Added Services: In a lightweight paper market dominated by low prices (as cheap as they were ten years ago) valueadded services are a way of keeping customers and avoiding the sometimes monthly blood bath for the lowest price. Market lower inventories mean that the ability to reprint quickly is important - yet Bible printing paper is normally ordered for each specific print run - not quick at all. There is clearly an opportunity for bold paper suppliers to locate supplies with their major customers, so that they are ready to take advantage of changing situations. 33 to manage their corporate reputations. The World Bank and religious leaders are seeking to work together in bringing about change in corporate attitudes to the environment. This extends to the use of light weight paper and even potential substitutes for it. This is creating opportunities for paper companies who are not only proactive in communicating their environmental credentials, but able to demonstrate proper audit trail of pulp and mill waste products and a pro-active stance. Oil companies have responded to pressure by appointing their own environmental staff perhaps paper mill groups should do the same and campaign from within, before campaigners from without, start to make their mark.
