am 13. Aptil, nachdem wir am 9.
wieder die Linie passierten, in Jap
an. Da wir eine zehntaegige Reise
vor uus batten, war es noetig,
unsere Bunker mit Futter fuer die
Kessel zu Hiellen, nud so fuhren
wir gleieb zur ~Kobleninser' (Das
Kohlendepot ist aut einer kleineu
Insel). Am selben Tage ankerteu
wir jedoch uoch im Hafen, diesrual
abet nicht fuer lange Datier, denn
schon am 15. nacbtuittags wurde
der Anker wieder gelicbtet, urn
unter Abscbiedsweisen den Hafen
zu verlassen, war ts docb luer
manchen der letzte Suedseebalen,
dem sie nun Lebewobl sagtcn. Bei
alien war es aber wohl ein Lebewohl aus freudigem Hetzen.

Wir erreichten Nagasaki am 23. morgtns. Von der
scboenen Ein fahrt konnten wir des

4. Mai liefen wir in der Morgeniruehe auf Tsingtau- Reede ein.
Fuer viele war es die letzte Fahrt,
aber docb duriten wir noch eiumal
zeigen, was wir gelernt batten.
Aui Befebl S. M. des Kaisers besicbtigte uns am 6 , in Vertretung
des abwesenden Gescbwaderchefs,
der Kommandant SM S. ~Gneisenau" Herr Kapitaen ■/.. See von
Usslar. Bei der Krilik gab der
Besichtigende seiner grossen Freude
darueber Ausdnuck, dass er den
Befehl zur Besichtigung bekommen,
und dass er nun davon herichten
koenne. Die irdl. Lcser moegen
sicb biernacb eiu Urteil ueber dea
Ausfall der Besicbtiguug selbst
bilden.
Der Zweck unseres Kommens
nacb Tsingtau war, dort in die
Werft zu gehen, um die jaehrlichen
Instandsetzungsarbeiteu vorzunehmen. Nachdem die Besichtigung
beendet, stand dem nichts mehr im
Wege, und so liefen wir denn uocb
am gleichen Tage iu die Tsingtauer
Wejat ein. Ausser mehreren Schiffen huseres dortigen Geschwaders
lag auch ein Schift unseres Bundesgenossen Oesterreich in der Werlt.

und Amortisieruug der chinesischen
Staatsanleihen dienen. Soviel ich erfahren, iaellt dem Deutscheu Reich
eiu Anteil an den Zolleinuahmen

Bekanntlich bilden die Huelsen
der Kakaotruechte, wenn sie nicht
in einer gecigneten Weise beseitigt
werden, in doppelter Hinsicht eine
Gefahr fuei die Pflaneuugen
Erstens fuer die Kakaobaeume
selbst, indem von den Schalenhaufeu aus sich Schaedlinge des
Kakaos verhreiten.
Insbesondere
giht es fast ueberall Schalen, die
von der Brauufaeule befallen sind.
Prueher sab man dies luer eine nur
den Fruechteu eigene Kraukbeit
an ;
durch
die Forschuugen
in
Rovers
Trinidad
uud
Petch's in Ceylon ist jedoch
fefitgestellt, dass diese Kraukheitserscheinung durch den gleichen
Pilz (Phytophtora faberi) hervorgerltfen wird. welcher a-ch die

Kakaokrehses ist. Von jeder
krauken Schale aus koennen Sporen
auf die Rinde gelangen, daselbst
eindriugen uud den Baum krank
machen. Dies gilt sowohl von den
kranken Fruechteu am

abgeernteter Fruechte.

Tatsaechlich hat die Erfahrung
gelehrt, dass in der naechsteu Umgebung von Schalenhaufeu krebskranke Baeume oftmals haeufiger
sind als anderswo, natuerlich nur
da, wo es Baurafaeulle gibt. Ergibt
sich somit schon der Krebsbekaempfuug wegen die Notwendigkeit
einer radikalen Beseitigung der
Schalen, so ist dies noch viel mehr
der Fall wegen der guenstigen
Brutgelegenheit, die die Schalenhaufeu dem Nashornkaefer bieten,
zu dessen Hanptbrutstaetten sie
gehoeren.
vVollte man die Haufen kotnpostieren und mit Kalk versetzeu, so
wuerde dies leider weder das
TJeberleben der Sporen noch die
Entwickelung des Nashornkaefers
dariu ausschliessen. Das Gleich-e
gilt von dem Vergraben oder dem
Aufhaeufen in tiefen Gruben.
Wollte man die Haufen regelmaessig nach Nashornkaeferlarveu
durchsuchen, so haette man immens
viel Arbeit damit, die mit deu
Arbeiterverhaeltnissen
hiesigen
nicht vereinbar waere, und ausserdem bliebe die Gefahr bezueglich
des Kakaokrebses bestehen, von
auderen Maengeln abgesehen. In
gleicher Weise Unvollkommencs
wuerde eine Behaudlung der Gruben mit Sehwefelkohlenstoff leisten,
auch infolge der von Zeit zu Zeit
Wiederholung sebr
notwendigen
kostspielig sein.
Es gibt daber kein an-
