Die Einfuhr aus den Kolo*
nien nach Deutschland betrug
im Jahre 1907 22,4 Mill. M.;
ein erhebliclier Teil der Ausfuhr der Kolonien. geht also
nicht nach. dem Mutterlande,
sondern nach fremden LJindern.
Soviel bisher iiber die folgenden Jahre bekannt geworden ist, kann rait der erfiettlichen Tatsache einer schnell
fortschreitenden Entwicklnug
gerechnet werden. Die Diamantenfunde nnd das Aufbliihen des Bergbaus iiberhaupt in Siidwestafrika, die
inzwischen entdeckten Phosphatlager in den Palau-Inseln,
die stetige Znnahme der Pflanzungsertrage und die systeniatische Inangriffnahnie des
■BaunnvollbauesWerden ziffermjissig einen bedeutenden
Aufschwttng seit 190S erkenlien lassen.
VVir behalten uns vor, darauf zuriickzukomnien, sowie
die vollstandigeu Statistikeu
vorliegen werden.
Zieht man zn einem Vergleich die Handelsbeziehungen Deutschlands mit auderen
Lauderu, z. B. China (ausser
Kiautschou, das statistisch zu
den Kolonien zahlt) und Japan, heran, so ergiebt sich eiu
sehr in die All gen fallender
Untevschied zu Gunsten der
Kolonien.
Die deutsche Einfuhr aus
China betrug 1907 56 Mill.
Mark, die deutsche Ausfuhr
nach China in demselbeu Jahre 63 Mill. Mark, unser Gesamthandel mit China also
119 Mill. Mark.
Im Jahre 1908 sank die Einfuhr auf 51 Mill., die Ausfuhr
gleichfalls auf 51 Mill., sodass
sich bei einem Gesaintliaudel
von 102 Mill, cine Abnahme
von 17 Millionen ergiebt,

Sports Club das Verbot des Mitbringens von Hunden auf das SolfFeld in Erinnerung gebracbt. Wir
sind der Ansicht, dass bier die
Polizei einscbreiten muesste, denn
cs ist unbestreitbar eine eininente
Gefabr luer Reiter und Pferd, wenu
letzteres iu der Carriere von Hunden. selbst wenu dieselben noch so
edel gezuechtet sind, angesprungen

der Praxis zusammen, aus Parlauien-

Industriellen
maeaniache Praxis fehlt, dazu ueber
gaht, einen Kreis von erfahrenen
Kaufleuten als Berater um sicb zu
sammeln, so erkennt erdadnrchan,
class dor dureh Dernburgs Berufung
usw. Ihm gehoerten unter anderen
an die Direktorwx der Deutschen
Kolonialgesellschaft fuer Suedwestafrika, der - Jaluit-Geaellschaft, der
einen kaurmaenniaehen Beirat. Zu
einer Erhaltung dea kaufmaennisohen
Elements in unaerer Kolonialwirf
aehaft liegt um ao mehr Yeraolassung
hatten. Man wird esdiesen Maennern
nicht uebelnehmen,-wenn einzelne als
Kaufleute die Organisation des Kolonialrates angesiehts der Schwaeche
der frueheren Kolom'alabteilung des
Auswaerligen Amtes zeitweise fuer
ihre eigenen Yorteile ausnutzten.
Aber die Vertretung der eigenen Interessen wurde allmaehlieh so ausgiebig betrieben, daaa der Kolonialrat die tatsaeohliohe Macht in unaerer
Kolonialwirtsohaft darstellte, und
daas die fruehere Kolonialverwaltung
ein willenloses Werkzeug in der Hand
dieaer Maenner ■ war. Nur dadurch
erkloert ea sich, dass frueher die Kolonialabteilung des Auswaertigon
Antes die oekannten Liefernngsvertraege mit ' Tippelskirch, Woermann nnd dergleichen abschloss, und
daas wertvblle Konzestionen an Land*
gesellsehaften versohleudert wurden.
Geradekber diese Auswuechso gaben
die Yeranlassung, \ dass derEinfluss
des Kolonialratea als immer unheil*
voller erkannt wurde.
Ea war eine der ersten Taton des

Stantseekretaers Dernburg,
dass er beim Kaiser die Aufloesung

Between four and five years
ago the Alisa Plantation was a
howling wilderness, figuratively
speaking at any rate, and now
it is a charming and blest spot.
When the Upolu Kubber Co.
was floated in Glasgow, something under five years ago, the
most sanguine optimist could
not have imagined the transformation that would take place
in a comparatively short space
of time.
This transformation is, of
course, due only to scientific
knowledge, capable management, and, last but not least,
strenuous and never tiring labor, and it reflects the greatest
credit on all who have taken
part in making the plantation
what it now is.
At the present time there is
a matter of 500 acres under
cultivation, the whole being
laid out in five wind-protected
blocks, varying in size from 178
to 57 acres.
Before planting operations
were commenced it was necessary to make a road, tapping
the road between Tanumapua
and Tapatapao, the distanco
being about four and a half
miles. This in itself was quite
an undertaking, but was carried
through successfully, a tangible
result being that the lands on
both sides of that road are now
nearly all opened up. Instead
of over four miles of bush, the
greater part of the journey is
through clearings of excellent
cacao and rubber lands.
This road in itself is a boon
to the country at large, and to
the sottlors in the district in
particular, and although! at
present, it is somewhat' rough
and stony in places, Mill it could
be put in good order at a reasonable outlay.

At first the water supply
was a< matter for anxious consideration, but a. waterhead
was discovered a good height
above the main buildings. The
waterhead is in the bed of-a
dry stream, and is fed by three

when new buildings were erected, at a higher altitude, it was

Upon arriving at Alisa the
visitor cannot fail to be charmed
with the beautifully picturesque
and extensive view from the
spacious verandah of the house.
Looking over.the fertile lowlands between Alisa and the
coast, with the sea as a foreground, it is doubtful if such a
peaceful landscape of fertility
and verdure could.be surpassed.
The variegated shrubs and
trees, together with the flowers
and grass immediately in front
of the house, give the whole a
charming home like environment and atmosphere.
If the view can be surpassed
it is from the overseer's house,
about 200 feet above, "from
where may be seen, on the
right, the Aele and Vaitele
plantations, the track of the
"Water Right" being plainly
discernible, and, to the left, the
coast as far as Mama, a grand
panorama of the intervening
country, extending between.
On the plantation itself there
are, in addition to the main
dwelling house and outbuildings, two overseers' houses,
store houses, etc., and two Chinese barracks, one capable of
accommodating 60, and the
other 81 coolies.
There are 91 coolies employed on the. plantation, including
two overseers, aud there is little
or no trouble with the labor.
Everything seems to go by clockwork, and, as far as the casual
onlooker con see, the Chinese
appear to be in the best of
health, contented, and happy.
Four hundred and eighty
acres is the actual area that is
under cultivation. A new departure was inaugurated in -lay*
mg out and planting Alisa,
that is, rubber and cacao were
planted in alternate rows, each
J 5 feet.' opart. This . plan 'appears to answer well, as the
"

scheme'for supplying'those
buildings with water. To meet
thiedifficulty aconcretedam was
constructed,-and a hydraulic
ram installad below it. This
works well, and a plentiful supply of water is thrown "to a
height of 180 feet above the
dam/givingthe needfulsupply to
the higher buildings.
Just now fine roads are being
constructed, which will *add
greatly to the convenience of
traffic on the • plantation. The
roads are being carefully
graded, and are made to last.
Altogether; in fact at every
point, step, and turn, Alisa
looks a thoroughly up-to-date
plantation, and there are many
worse, and probably not many
better investments than some
shares in the Upolu Rubber
Company.

A meeting of the Planters' Veroin was held od the 11th inst, and
it was there announced that tho
next Chinese transport would leave
Swatow in November next, and
might be expected to arrive hero
at the end of December.
Four hundred coolie* are ordered,
and, as this is not a regular transport, there will consequently be" 400
more oooliesr here in Tatar*.

Furlhor inspection shows mo that
I have chosen :i really comfortable
place in which to live and work. The
mouth of the cave is very broad and
also high, admitting plenty of light.
There is ample room for everybody
and everything. I put up my camp
bed at one end, erect a table for meals
and work, make a shelf of sticks to
dry specimens on, and have my various
boxes put in orderly array. The cook
and the three boys make themselves
snug in one of the old huts, of which
there are six, within my cave. There
is plenty of firewood obtainable within
a short distance, and a supply of excellent water bubbles up from a rocky
basiu at one end of the cave. Creepers
and vines overhang the mouth, while
on the slopes below are beautiful
forest trees and grass. Fully one
thousand feet lower down the great
grass plains stretch southward, hun 1
dreds of square miles blue in the mist
of distance being visible from my seat
at the table.
What an ideal abode would this be
for one tired of the civilised world's
ceaseless excitements--a dry and
roomy cave, with roof of solid rock,
a. level floor, good water, plenty of
firewood, a most magnificent view,
and nn excellent climate, equal to our
very finest English autum, cool within
tho homo by day and not bitterly cold

Tint the most beautiful' cave of all;
is one over the mouth of which flows
a great waterfall, Entering by the
side, I look through the water and
spray down upon the smiling, sunlit
plains beneath, merging from green
to blue, under the Equatorial sun';
for Elgon escarpment is but a few
miles from the Eqmtor. It is a re*
relation to me. How different are
these surroundings from my precon*
ceived ideas as to what the Equator
should be! This cave, with the
water-fall and moss'covered entrance,
contains deposits of salt, and I find a
party of natives, mostly children,
busily engaged in ailing baskets with
salt with which to trade. But I am
nauseated with exploring caves:
There is tragedy in these visits to the.
deserted villages of n vanished race
hidden within the earth.
And so I proceed with my work of
collecting, and now the secrets which
old Elgon has so long kept from the
knowledge of mankind aire in great
part revealed. My list of now bats,
rats, mice, moles, squirrels, cats,
conies, and other animals is surv
prisingly lengthy. It has been my
privilege for my scientific work to
live in several parts of our Empire in
strange houses, in huts made of mud,
of bamboo, of grass, of banana leaves,
but I can truthfully say I prefer my
cave here, hung between earth and
sky, to any house, or hut, -or tent of
wanderer's charm. And here as the
pass I feel that my humble efforis are,
in however small a way, lessening the
number of Nature's mysteries,
