Discover Kaunergrat nature reserve …
Shaped by the Ice Age, the nature park region features all of the altitude belts
which are to be found in the Alps and comprises highly unique, and extremely
diverse natural and cultivated landscapes. Kaunergrat nature reserve aims to
be a home to people, an area cultivated and managed in an exemplary, natureoriented way as well as a region whose outstanding natural features are carefully protected and preserved. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of the
countryside in the Kaunergrat nature reserve!
The high altitude delights of the Kaunergrat and carefully managed environment in the valleys are only heightened by the unforgettable thrills of visiting
wonderful natural features such as the sunny slopes around Fließ or the Piller
moor. The Kaunergrat nature reserve authority runs an interesting summer
programme with guided tours of the moors, hikes and geology workshops,
etc. All in all, the region is perhaps best explored by going on some of the
many alluring nature trails or adventure hikes.
The programme is available from the
Nature Reserve office or the Pitztal
tourism board. Alternatively, you can
obtain it by visiting www.kaunergrat.at.

WAYS TO WATER – ARZL – WENNS-PILLER
Arzl: For details please refer to the hiking tips on p. 17-19.
Piller countryside pond
– for swimming in and relaxing After merging together the requisite plots of
land, human intervention turned a wetland biotope into a wonderful recreational area for children and grown-ups. The Piller countryside pond is located
at about 1,370 m above sea level just a few metres away from the road to the
Piller Höhe and has proven to be an extremely popular place among local children for going swimming and paddling on hot summer days. The somewhat
cloudy water (which despite its appearance is actually supposed to be extremely healthy for swimmers) comes from the intake of a stream originating
from the Piller moor. Anyone wishing to avoid the crowded swimming baths
and go for a dip in natural surroundings instead is heartily recommended to
pay the Piller countryside pond a visit.
WAYS TO WATER – WENNS-PILLER
13
Harbeweiher pond
– pretty as a landscape painting It
would be hard to paint a more
beautiful picture. Harbeweiher
pond nestles harmoniously in the
countryside around the Piller
Höhe, an area steeped in history.
Starting from the Gachen Blick or
Kaunergrat nature reserve house
(which has parking spaces), a circular hiking trail roughly 7 km long
brings the visitor to one of the
most pristine lakes or ponds in the
Pitztal. The pond is fed by an almost 3 ha large biotope in the area
around the Aifner. The Harbeweiher pond is situated about 1,640 m
above sea level and was created
primarily to serve the mill above
the hamlet of Puschlin. It also acts
as a source of irrigation for the
hamlet and its surroundings. In
these unspoilt surroundings people once lived in a house from
around 1634 to 1880; the ruins of
the structure were carefully dismantled in 1965. Today there is
nothing left to remind us of the
fact that people once lived at the
Harbeweiher, leaving the visitor to
enjoy the complete tranquillity
and majesty of the landscape.
Waldweiher pond
– right in the heart of countless trees From a bird’s eye view the Waldweiher
appears as a shimmering blue circle that glints amidst lush green trees. It nestles at about 1,500 m above sea level in Fließ Wood to the west of Turf Moor.
The pond serves as an unspoiled recreation area for the local population and
is used to irrigate the fields in the locality. Waldweiher pond is fed by an irrigation ditch which runs 1,700 m metres across the Piller meadows around the
mountain of Venet. The irrigation ditch itself is maintained by a water utility
cooperative from Fließ. On particularly warm days Waldweiher pond is an excellent hiking destination. The starting point is right by the Piller Höhe nature
reserve house (which also has parking spaces).

WAYS TO WATER – JERZENS
Groaßsee lake
Situated 2,416 m above sea level, the Groaßsee is the largest lake in the Riegetal nature reserve (hence the name: “groaß” dialect form of German “groß” =
big). Although its size varies according to the time of year and amount of precipitation, it is roughly 50 m long, 30 m wide and has a depth of 3-4 m. The
lake is beautifully situated in the upper part of the Riegetal valley between
Wildgrat (2,971 m) and Gemeindekopf (2,771 m), and can be reached by traversing the Hochzeiger and Zollberg mountains. After about 100 metres, the
overground tributary at the southeastern shore of the lake splits into two
streams which originate from a point below the Wildgrat and from two smaller
mountain lakes below the Gemeindekopf. The outflow from the northwestern
bank of the lake is also above ground. It winds its way through the entire Riegetal valley and ends at the extremely impressive Stuiben Waterfall which flows
into the Pitze.
Stuibebach stream
With a total length of 4.2 km, Stuibebach stream is one of the watercourses in
the unglaciated Central Alps. Extending across an area of over 10 km2, its
catchment basin is located around the Wildgrat and the Riegetal nature reserve. The regional government of the Tyrol has designated the entire length
of Stuibebach stream a priority nature conservation area. Consequently, the
waterway is virtually unspoiled and has remained unchanged.
Stuiben waterfall
The name derives from the German word for “spray”, a particularly apt designation when one visits the vantage point right by the 150 m high waterfall.
Located in the municipality of Jerzens, it features prominently from the road
at the “Steinbrücke” turnoff to the hamlet of Graslehn. Alternatively, it can be
directly reached along an extremely beautiful and well signposted hiking trail.
WAYS TO WATER – JERZENS – ST. LEONHARD
15
Sechszeiger lake
The man-made lake constructed in the Hochzeiger ski area in 1999 for the
production of artificial snow lies 2,360 m above sea level and was enlarged in
2009. It was built in harmony with nature and blends into the existing general
view very well. The 115,000 m2 capacity produces approx 290,000 m2 of snow
and the water used is, of course, drinking water quality. The dam crest is
600 m long and, with a surface area of 1.80 ha of water, the lake is up to 10
metres deep. The lake is the starting point for many walks around the Sechszeiger and Hochzeiger area.
Söllbach stream
With a total length of 2.2 km, Söllbach stream is one of the watercourses in the
unglaciated Central Alps. Extending across an area of over 10 km2, its catchment basin is located around Brechsee lake from which it is chiefly fed. The
regional government of the Tyrol has designated Söllbach stream a priority
nature conservation area so the waterway is virtually unspoiled.
Rifflbach / Seebach stream
With a total length of 5.8 km, the stream known as Rifflbach up to the point
where it flows into Rifflsee lake and as Seebach after discharging from there is
one of the watercourses in the unglaciated Central Alps. Extending across an
area of up to 100 km2, its catchment basin is located in the surroundings of the
Wurmtaler Kopf, Hameskopf, Löcherkogel, Rostitzkogel and Seekogel, all of
them at least 3,000 m above sea level. The Rifflbach is fed by dozens of relatively small glaciers which cause it to swell considerably in spring. The regional government of the Tyrol has designated the entire length of the Rifflbach /
Seebach stream a medium priority nature conservation area. Even so, the waterway is virtually unspoiled and has remained unchanged.
Gschwandtbach stream
With a total length of 3.5 km, Gschwandtbach stream is one of the watercourses in the unglaciated Central Alps. Extending across an area of over 10 km2, its
catchment basin is located in the surroundings of the Dristkogel, Gsallkopf
und Rofelewand, all of them at least 3,000 m above sea level. Particularly in
spring, the Gschwandtferner feeds the stream with copious amounts of melt
water. The regional government of the Tyrol has designated the entire length
of the Gschwandtbach a nature conservation area of the utmost priority, so
the waterway is virtually unspoiled and has remained unchanged.
Klockelebach stream
With a total length of 2.7 km, Klockelebach stream is one of the watercourses
in the unglaciated Central Alps. Extending across an area of over 10 km2, its
catchment basin is located in the surroundings of the Luibeskogel, Felderkogel

WAYS TO WATER – ST. LEONHARD
Brechsee lake
Situated in the municipality of St. Leonhard, the lake is a continuation of a
small highland valley and surrounded by rough boulders caused by rockfall
and moraines. It covers an area of 1.36 hectares, has a maximum depth of
6.1 m and contains up to 43,018 m3 of water. 237 m long and 87 m wide, the
lake nestles in an idyllic location and is an ideal spot to enjoy rest and recreation. Brechsee lake is fed by two overground inlets delivering water at an overall rate of some 20 litres a second (August 1983). The two inlets which flow
into the southern shore of the lake start off as springs on the overgrown cone
of debris in front of the lake.
Rifflsee lake
Several well signposted trails lead straight to this destination from the bottom
of the valley. The shortest of them runs adjacent to the lift route along a well
signposted path from Mandarfen straight to the lake (about 90 minutes’ walk).
A very convenient alternative is to take the Rifflsee cable car which sets out
from Mandarfen. The cable car mountain terminal and the Rifflsee Alpine hut
are ideal spots from where the visitor can enjoy the marvellous surroundings;
the hut is located somewhat below the lake at 2,289 m above sea level. Rifflsee
lake is located at the exit of a flat highland valley which forms a relatively flat
basin in the direction of the Pitztal. Just in front of the steep drop to the Pitztal
a barrier of rock marks the exit of the highland valley, forming the 995 m long
and 393 m wide Alpine lake. The entire area covers 26.9 hectares and the lake
has a maximum depth of 24 m. It is mainly fed by an overground tributary
which flows into the western shore of the lake in the form of a delta. The outlet
from the lake consists of a copious stream which runs towards Mandarfen.

From the Kreuzjöchlspitz (2,908 m) to the Schafhimmel (2,820 m)
A 1 km long hike along the ridge – well secured with plenty of chains. This is a
relatively simple fixed rope route. Starting from Groaßsee lake in the Riegetal

prominent arrow indicates that you should cross over to the other side of the
little ridge. Continue uphill along grassy, rock strewn slopes to the little lake

pine tree woods until the goods track leading to the Mauchelealm. From there
it is about another 200 m up to the Mauchele. On the way down, this trail leads
to Rehwald. Takes about 3½ - 4 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
Eggenstall - Neubergalm 1889 m - Tiefentalalm 1880 m Arzler Alm 1900 m - Eggenstall
Set out along the moderately steep goods track from Eggenstall which leads
up to the beautiful Neubergalm. A shady path from there takes you through
the variegated wood to the beautiful setting of the Tiefentalalm. Now keep
going on the right, following the footpath until you get to the, goods track
leading to the Arzler Alm. To get back down you can either go along the goods
track or take the forest path to Piösmes. Keep left along the Pitze river and you
will reach Eggenstall comfortably in 30 minutes. Takes about 5½ hrs; level of
difficulty: easy to intermediate.
Mandarfen - Taschachalm 1796 m - Rifflseehütte 2293 m Hirschtal - Mandarfen
Cross the Pitze river at Mandarfen and follow the flat goods track to the Taschachalm. From here keep going along the track for a further 200 m or so, then
take the steep but very good uphill path to the Rifflsee. Once there turn right
along the stream and up to the Rifflseehütte. Continue further along the Rifflsee until you arrive at the mountain terminal of the Rifflseebahn. Just a bit
further on, the path forks on the right and features a section through the Hirschtal with many beautiful views. Then take the panoramic trail to Mandarfen.
Takes about 3½ hrs; level of difficulty: easy to intermediate.
Mandarfen - Taschachalm 1796 m - Mittelberg Gletscherstube 1915 m - Mittelberg
From Mandarfen cross the bridge and turn left along the wide asphalted road
to the Taschachalm. Cross the bridge at the Taschachalm and continue to the
glacier valley terminal. Then walk through the Mittelbergerwald to the goods
track leading to the Gletscherstube at the foot of the Mittelbergferner. Here
you can enjoy beautiful views of the glacier. The way back to Mittelberg along
the goods track takes about 2½ hrs; level of difficulty: easy.
RECOMMENDED HIKING TRAILS - ST. LEONHARD

Rifflsee circular walk
The summer circular walk around the Rifflsee is also suitable for families (even
with push chairs) and older people. Takes 1 hr. Level of difficulty: easy.
Zaunhof/Grüble - Ludwigsburger Hütte 1935 m St. Leonharder hoogteweg - Enger/Bichl
From Zaunhof/Grüble (with a car park by the freight lift) take the path up to
the Ludwigsburger Hütte. Then continue towards the Lehnerjoch. After walking on for 10 minutes or so turn right and follow the signposted footpath
heading south. This section requires you to walk across several cirques and
ford a number of streams. It is followed by a steep, secured downhill path to
the Hairlacher Kar. Here you climb up to the Maurerköpfl embrasure on the
western ridge of the Hairlacher Seekopf. Continue south until you come to the
‘Am Gampen’ junction, then go down to the (abandoned) Äußere Schwarzenbergalm and continue on to Enger/Bichl. Surefootedness and stamina required! Takes about 8-9 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate to hard.
Stillebach/Piösmes - Luibisalm 2070 m Moalandlsee 2530 m Stillebach/Piösmes
An asphalted road on the left between Stillebach and Piösmes leads to the
broadcasting mast. Follow this road for a short way until you come to the right
fork of the footpath leading to the Luibisalm. Take this straightforward path
up to the Luibisalm (not manned). Situated just opposite the steep slopes of
the towering Rofelewand (3,354 m), the Luibisalm is a peaceful destination for
outings offering superb views of the valley below. The route continues past a
hunting lodge to the Luibisböden. If you keep going straight ahead the trail
takes you to the Luibiskogel; turning right, it goes through a scree cirque to a
cleft behind which you can see the beautiful Moalandlsee (surefootness and
stamina required) nestling in a spectacular setting of sheer rock. The way back
is along the same route. Takes about 6 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.

RECOMMENDED HIKING TRAILS - ST. LEONHARD
Mountain tour to the Stallkogel
Set off on a forest path from Rehwald to the Mauchele Alm. The route continues via Karbach up to the summit of the Stallkogel (one of the most beautiful
mountains with panoramic views in the Pitztal). The route back goes across the
Mauchelekar to Rehwald. Takes about 5 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
A hike around the Rappenkopf
Take the uphill trail from Piösmes (1,400 m) to the Arzler Alm and continue
your ascent from there to the summit of the Rappenkopf (2,300 m). The way
back goes across the ‘marshes’ to Piösmes. Takes about 5 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
Trenkwald - Mittelberglesee 2450 m - Trenkwald
Cross the Pitze river at Trenkwald, then turn right towards the waterfall. Continue by taking a very steep footpath on the left up to the abandoned Neururer Alm. This trail goes on to the Verpeiljoch. The path forks down on the left
to the Loobachtal. Walk across the slopes of the Weißer Kogel down to the
Loobach. Cross over the stream and keep left as you walk up to the Mittelberglesee in its rather isolated setting at the foot of the Parstleswand. This place
exudes peace and quiet in the midst of an impressive mountain setting. The
way back to Trenkwald starts off on the same path leading back to the Loobachtal and the fork at the Neururer Alm. An even steeper path on the right
leads down from there along the stream back to the starting point. Takes
about 5 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
Plangeroß - Rüsselsheimer Hütte 2382 m Gahwinden 2648 m – Plangeroß
Set out from the car park in front of Plangeroß on a very good but steep path to
the beautiful setting of the Rüsselsheimer Hütte. From the hut the trail continues
steeply uphill across loose debris before coming to a fork with a moderately steep
path on the left. This path takes you straight to the Gahwinden vantage point with
breathtaking views of the glaciers and leads away from the valley. The way back is
along the same trail. Takes about 5 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
RECOMMENDED HIKING TRAILS - ST. LEONHARD
31
Plangeroß - Kaunergrathütte 2811 m - Plangeroß
Cross the Pitze river in front of Plangeroß and start out on a wide trail to the
very steep ascent leading through woodland to the Plangeroßalpe. Here you
need to cross the stream at two points which can prove to be an exciting experience depending on the time of year and level of the water. Continue along
the moderately steep trail along the stream to the path leading up to the second level of the valley and the convergence of the Cottbus high-altitude trail.
From there follow the path through scree and debris to the final, very steep
ascent to one of the highest Alpine huts in the Ötztaler Alpen, the Kaunergrathütte. Return along the same way. Takes about 6 - 7 hrs; level of difficulty:
intermediate.
Tip: the daring among you can climb up from the Kaunergrat mountain hut in
about 1 hr to the top of Plangeroß (delightful panoramic view). Level of difficulty: intermediate
Mittelberg - Braunschweiger Hütte 2759 m Pitztaler Jöchl 2995 m - Mittelberg
Take the flat goods track to the Gletscherstube. Continue on to the Braunschweiger Hütte. The rocky footpath leads along the icefall and steeply upwards
to the foot of the Mittelbergferner icefall. This spot marks the start of the very
challenging and very steep ascent - some of which leads up steps - to the hut.
The walk along this tiring route offers a fantastic view of the surrounding glacier world. A very good path leads up to the Pitztaler Jöchl with its rewarding
views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Take the same route back to the
valley as on the ascent. This hike requires stamina and surefootedness! Takes
about 7-8 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
Alternatively, take the ‘Pitz-Express’ (you have to pay for tickets) from Mittelberg to the glacier mountain terminal. From there turn left towards the east
and cross over the Mittelbergferner (requires Alpine experience) to the Braunschweiger Hütte (about 1,5 hrs). From the hut the way home leads back across
the glacier trail to the ‘Pitz-Express’ mountain terminal (note the departure
times) or straight down to Mittelberg (approx. 2½ hrs).
Some general advice: Despite the beauty of the mountains you should
bear in mind that this is hazardous terrain. Never plan a mountain tour
without suitable equipment! Mountain boots and protection from the
rain are extremely important. You are specifically advised not to undertake a mountain tour in poor weather and fog. Keep to the signposted trails! Tell your accommodation provider where you are hiking to
and when you expect to be back. Start off on easy walking paths or
trails and progress gradually to more difficult ones. Report Alpine accidents to the mountain rescue services in St. Leonhard, Plangeroß,
Jerzens, Wenns and Arzl. Call 140 in emergencies. Please help to keep
our environment clean

HIGH-ALTITUDE TRAILS
Pitztaler Almenweg
The Pitztal Alpine pastures
trail links up five beautifully
located Alpine pastures: the
Söllbergalm, Mauchelealm
Neubergalm,
Tiefentalalm
and Arzler Alm! About 100 m
in front of the entrance to Wiese village, walk on the right
along the goods track to the
Söllbergalm. From there the
route continues through woods of larch and Swiss pine on a relatively steep
path to Brechsee. After walking for about 30 minutes, turn off towards the
Mauchele Alm on the Stallkogel; you will now come to the recently opened
fairly steep path that proceeds from the Mauchele Alm. After about 500 m
(note the red marker) turn left towards the stream crossing. Then turn left
again through slightly rocky terrain towards the Neubergalm (with a wonderful view of the valley). Surefootness and a good head for heights required. A
shady path leads from the Neubergalm through a variegated wood to the
beautiful setting of the Tiefentalalm. Now continue on the right, following the
path, to the goods track of the Arzler Alm. To descend, either walk along the
goods track or the forest path to Piösmes. You can always descend from each
mountain pasture if you wish to return at an earlier time. Altogether, this hike
takes about 8 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
Fuldaer Höhenweg
Take the Rifflseebahn to the Rifflsee. From there, walk left along the lake and
cross the stream to the fork leading to the Fulda high-altitude trail. Following
the path on the left along moderately steep terrain that regularly goes up and
down along several brooks and streams you come to the one critical spot at
the Vorderes Köpfl. Here you will have to negotiate some rocky, steep passages, though these are well secured and are not a problem if you tread carefully. The steady descent to the cirque begins at this point and the route continues, after a short stretch uphill,
to the Taschachhaus. Enjoy a fantastic view of the Taschach glacier
world from the mountain ridge
just above the hut. A good way
down is to take the moderately
steep goods track to the Taschachalm and from there to continue on to Mandarfen. The hike
takes about 7 hrs; level of difficulty: intermediate.
HIGH-ALTITUDE TRAILS
33
St. Leonharder high altitude trail
Take the well signposted goods trail from Zaunhof to the Ludwigsburg Alpine
hut. Then continue towards Lehnerjoch and turn right after about a 10-minute
walk before following the well signposted path to the south. Walk across several cirques and cross streams before going down a steep, secured path to the
Hairlach cirque. The steep path, parts of which are secured with chains, now
ascends to the striking Mauerköpfl. Continue along the mountain slopes below the Hairlacher Seekopf to the point where the path forks a little to the east
of “Am Gampen”. The route continues uphill towards Wilder See (Wild Lake)
until you get below Brandsee lake, which is at the same altitude as the Schoaßkogel. Continue along the Biederes Kar cirque to the Luibisböden (with a
descent also possible down the Luibisalm to Piösmes – takes about 8-9 hrs
thus far; level of difficulty: intermediate to difficult). This hike requires plenty
of stamina and all-round fitness.
34
HIGH-ALTITUDE TRAILS
Mainzer Höhenweg
Turn right at the Rüsselsheimer Hütte to the Weissmaurachsee. The path to
the
Weissmaurachjoch
starts at a moderate incline
before becoming quite
steep in parts. Continue to
the southern Puitkogelferner and traverse two
other glaciers until you get
to the Rheinlandpfalz bivouac. Crampons are required for the Wassertalkogel! Then on a path - quite
steep in places - across the
Wurmsitzkogel and on to
the Polleskogel. Climb up to
the Pitztal Jöchl and down
again to the Braunschweiger Hütte. Some of the paths are secured on the route to the glaciers. The
Mainz high-altitude trail is a demanding high-Alpine tour requiring absolute
surefootedness in the broken rocks terrain, grade II proficiency in rock-climbing and a good sense of direction. Nor should the length of the tour be underestimated: it takes around 10 hours to complete! Level of difficulty: hard,
sometimes goes across glaciers and therefore only advisable for experienced
mountaineers with the right kit!
Cottbuser Höhenweg
Take the Rifflseebahn up to the Rifflsee. From there turn right along the well
signposted path following the sharp bends towards the Brandkogel. Take the
path secured with wire cables through steep passages interspersed with slopes
across the Alzeleskar and go the long way around the Steinkogel (although the
passages through the steep rocky crags have been secured with wire cables
they still require absolute surefootedness and a good head for heights in order
for you to negotiate them). Where the Cottbus high-altitude trail converges
with the trail from Plangeroß that leads to the Kaunergrat Hütte, the route
starts off flat and leads through scree, but soon becomes very steep on its way
up to the Kaunergrat Hütte. The descent is back along the same path, but turns
left at the above-mentioned fork down to Plangeroß. Level of difficulty: hard,
only for experienced mountaineers; takes about 7-8 hrs.
Tip: the daring among you can climb up from the Kaunergrat mountain hut in
about 1 hr to the top of Plangeroß (delightful panoramic view). Level of difficulty: intermediate

Venet circular tour
The mighty massif of the Venet - a good 10 km wide - is understandably considered to be ‘Western Tyrol’s number-one lookout and hiking mountain’; enthusiastic travel writers have even praised it as being the ‘Tyrolean Rigi’. From
its highest point, the Glanderspitz (2,512 m above sea level), you can enjoy
impressive long-distance views of the surrounding valleys. For 30 km to the
west and the north, from Prutz to Imst, the Inn and Pitze rivers flow around
the Venet; to the south it is linked to the Kaunergrat through the Pillerhöhe.
Aeons ago however, the course of the Inn river bed ran along the south of the
Venet, where the broad undulating slopes of the wooded Pillerhöhe can be
seen today. The gentle, round shape of the Venet has made it highly popular
among many visitors and local residents as a mountain for going on walks and
hikes, particularly since there are lots of interesting routes and ways to get
down to the Pitztal.
Starting point I - Plattenrain Alm: car parking available
Starting point II - above Wenns, near Audershof: car parking available
Starting point III - Goglesalm: car parking available
Starting point IV - Piller: car parking available
Alpine huts and mountain inns serving refreshments: Alpengasthof Plattenrain, Hochastner Alm, Venetalm, Goglesalm (walk-round cheese dairy),
Galflunhütte and Larcher Alm.
Total distance: about 30 km, total walking time: about 9 hrs.

MILL IN THE HAMLET OF ARZL-RIED
This Sleeping Beauty of an 18th century grain mill was awakened from its agelong slumber by a dedicated group of mill enthusiasts. It is widely regarded as a
technical monument to the centuries-old tradition of milling grain in the Alpine
regions and can be visited on request (Helene Schrott: +43(0)5412-65049).
MILL IN JERZENS AND MILK PIPELINE
The mill was built by local farmers in 1862 and renovated in 1985 by the local
authority in association with the ‘Tanzalpe’ farming association - the mill’s
walkway even dates back to the year 1862. It can be visited each day of the
week during the summer months and bread is baked there once a week.
The mill also features a milk collection centre - laid in 1957, the 3 km milk pipeline runs from the Jerzner Alm (Tanzalm) and is still used today.
CHAPELS
The Pitztal features chapels of worship in virtually every single village and hamlet, including the pilgrimage church of Maria Hilf on the
Bichele just in front of Piösmes, the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee on the Piller, the
‘White Light’ chapel on the Pitztaler Gletscher
and the chapel of meditation on the Plattenrain, the chapel Bichl in Jerzens.

THE STONE PINE EXHIBITION
Jerzens the stone pine village amidst Kaunergrat Nature Park.
Nestled in between captivating and majestic mountains, Jerzens is a quaint
mountain village in the heart of the picturesque Pitztal Valley. The Stone Pine
woodlands that surround Jerzens have been a symbol of alpine magnificence
for centuries. The tree acts as the first barrier to protect forests and valley
against avalanches of snow and scree, is used to make furniture and carved
objects and has beneficial effects on human health and wellbeing. Generations of people in the village of Jerzens have been living in peaceful coexistence and friendship with the Stone Pine - and do so today.
The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner Knobby and gnarled, a
tough tree resists destructive natural forces that rage in high mountains.
Branches break under heavy snow, the tree’s crown may be hit by lightning,
trunks are often split in half, exposing wood to biting cold. But the tree remains steadfast and withstands these extreme conditions. It bravely battles
the elements life-long. It’s the Stone Pine.
The Exhibition The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner exhibition
takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery through the intricate life of the
Stone Pine. The growth and development of this tree is one of the most spectacular events in nature. The exhibition reveals that Stone Pines and humans
have a lot in common and allows visitors to observe some of the most important life stages of the tree, from seed to tree, from tiny tot to golden age, and
several phases in between. Moreover, you will learn about the wide-ranging
uses of Stone Pine wood and its amazing health-promoting properties. At the
cinema you can see the Stone Pine in breathtaking 3D.
