Nestled in between captivating and majestic mountains, Jerzens is a quaint mountain village in the heart of the picturesque Pitztal Valley. The Stone Pine woodlands that surround Jerzens have been a symbol of alpine magnificence for centuries. The tree acts as the first barrier to protect forests and valley against avalanches of snow and scree, is used to make furniture and carved objects and has beneficial effects on human health and wellbeing. Generations of people in the village of Jerzens have been living in peaceful coexistence and friendship with the Stone Pine - and do so today. The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner Knobby and gnarled, a tough tree resists destructive natural forces that rage in high mountains. Branches break under heavy snow, the tree’s crown may be hit by lightning, trunks are often split in half, exposing wood to biting cold. But the tree remains steadfast and withstands these extreme conditions. It bravely battles the elements life-long. It’s the Stone Pine. The Exhibition The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner exhibition takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery through the intricate life of the Stone Pine. The growth and development of this tree is one of the most spectacular events in nature. The exhibition reveals that Stone Pines and humans have a lot in common and allows visitors to observe some of the most important life stages of the tree, from seed to tree, from tiny tot to golden age, and several phases in between. Moreover, you will learn about the wide-ranging uses of Stone Pine wood and its amazing health-promoting properties. At the cinema you can see the Stone Pine in breathtaking 3D. MILL IN THE HAMLET OF ARZL-RIED This Sleeping Beauty of an 18th century grain mill was awakened from its age-long slumber by a dedicated group of mill enthusiasts. It is widely regarded as a technical monument to the centuries-old tradition of milling grain in the Alpine regions and can be visited on request (Helene Schrott: +43(0)5412-65049). MILL IN JERZENS AND MILK PIPELINE 21 (only open for visits during the summer months) The mill was built by local farmers in 1862 and renovated in 1985 by the local authority in association with the ‘Tanzalpe’ farming association – the mill’s walkway even dates back to the year 1862. It can be visited each day of the week during the summer months and bread is baked there once a week. The mill also features a milk collection centre - laid in 1957, the 3 km milk pipeline runs from the Jerzner Alm (Tanzalm) and is still used today.
