FloatFest Returns to Lake Mohawk for a Day of
Music and Community Fun
FloatFest was back in a big way on
Saturday, August 9th. The open to the
community event included local
music acts, a pig roast, beach bar
and a beautiful day on the lake!
Bands played from the Boardwalk
and music could be heard from a
boat on the lake or from the sand on
Beach 1. Boaters were encouraged to
anchor and listen from the lake and
beach goers could set up a chair, or
swim in the warm water.
FloatFest benefited the Ski Hawks,
our New Jersey State Water Ski Show
Team. During the event, the Ski
Hawks operated a water taxi service
which allowed hungry boaters to
come ashore without having to take
a swim. Over $2,000 in donations
were collected to benefit the Ski
Hawks team!
Sparta musician Geoff Doubleday
kicked off the event with an acoustic
guitar solo act. Sparta natives Deal
Casino took a break from their
residency in Asbury Park and brought
their unique rock sound and original
songs to the crowd. Blarney Fife got
the crowd to their feet with their Irish
sing along and classic Celtic tracks.

Almost Ghosts played summer time
favorites and classic tunes with a
twist. You and I, a duo, brought their
twist on folk and bluegrass music to
Lake Mohawk. Captains of Leisure
finished out the night with crowd
favorite classics and a three piece
horn section. MC and DJ Orlando
Rodriguez kept the music playing
between sets and got the crowd
involved. Rumor has it you could
hear songs from Beach 5! The
musicians, bands, MC, and FloatFest
Committee all volunteered their time
for the event.
The Committee members included,
Jack Parker, Jay Robertello and
Tommy Corbett of Toboggan Beach.
Nancy Farlow and Jim and Betsy
Ballantine of Beach 5. Glenn Allen of
Upper Lake Beach and Greg Case,
Assistant Manager of the Boardwalk
Club. A great deal of assistance was
provided by Tom Conway who
worked tirelessly all day to keep
things running smoothly and by
Rich Carlson who provided Marine
Security and Life Guards. Chef Jake
and his crew provided incredible
food too.
Float Fest was proudly sponsored
by new LMCC member, Dr. James R.
Fedich of Village Family Clinic
Chiropractic Physical Therapy, The
Board Walk Club and Lake Mohawk
Country Club.

Lake Mohawk Preservation
Vision and Purposes
Lake Water Quality
Areas of Focus for Our Projects and
Contributions
The Foundation is focused on
several areas in its early years of
operation. The following reflects our
aspirations and outlines our vision
and our priorities for projects and for
attracting volunteer support and
contributions from LMCC members,
private individuals, foundations,
businesses and others interested in
lake and watershed ecology. It is
based on our organizing materials
and was endorsed unanimously by
the Foundation Board at our August
meeting.
The IRS has determined that
contributions to the Foundation are
deductible for Federal tax purposes
and that we are qualified to receive
tax deductible bequests, transfers
and other gifts. The Foundation is
independent but works closely with
the Lake Mohawk Country Club and
other interested organizations
The sustainability of a lake community is critically influenced by
the health of its lakes and ponds.
Superior water quality does not just
happen. Lakes and ponds, left to their
own devices without intervention,
are in a constant state of “eutrophication,”
continually in the process of trying
to die. In order to achieve necessary
and desirable water-quality properties
while meeting Federal, State, and
local compliance requirements,
significant focus is placed on a
myriad of factors impacting the
quality of the water body or bodies,
both direct and indirect, including
surrounding land uses, and research
to ascertain and ensure the most
optimal and cost-effective means to
reach those ends. Concurrently,
collaborative programs are being
developed and we are seeking funds
to aid in achieving the Foundation’s
mission objectives.
Many factors affect water quality.
Programs that can be developed and
funded include:
• protection of streams and shorelines, effective management of
storm water,
• lake water treatments,
• management of septic systems,
particularly impact on the generation
and exacerbation of weed and
algae growth,
• control of the use of chemicals for
lawn and garden fertilization, and
weed and pest control, including
effective landscape strategies,
• management of boating and
swimming activities that impact
lake water quality, and
• development and organization of
community programs in support
of Municipal and State programs.
Environmental Education
Community outreach and lake
environmental education are crucial
to the preservation, protection, and
sustainability of a lake community. It

Lake Mohawk
Foundation
- A Tax Exempt 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization
is the mission and goal of the Lake
Mohawk Preservation Foundation to
invest in and support multiple
approaches and communication
channels to ensure that local lake
communities are kept well informed
on lake environmental challenges
and lake needs, and the importance
of adopting recommended land
practices and standards for lake and
local community sustainability. To
support this goal, the Foundation
provides information and direction
on how communities, associations
and individuals best can play a role.
A strong focus is placed on how to
involve and motivate local community
members through volunteer programs
and the exploration and utilization
of donation request opportunities.
Aquifer Protection and
Sustainability
Scientific Studies Including
Innovative Lake Treatment
Systems and Approaches
Land Conservation has been a
fundamental driver for environmental
protection for many years at Lake
Mohawk. We invest and support
programs related to the protection,
preservation, management, or
restoration of natural resources,
including lake water quality, storm
water drainage, septic system
management, potable water supply,
and programs related to forested
areas, such as the protection of
current landscapes including along
stream banks and storm water flow
channels, soils, and fish / wildlife
communities.
The Foundation will identify and
seek funding for enhanced treatment
processes and systems to support
lake water quality planning and
achievement of water quality value
opportunities for lake communities.
Programs are undertaken with the
assistance and guidance of various
scientific, educational, governmental
entities, watershed organizations,
Foundation members, and community
groups.
Mortgage Loan Originator
Protection of fresh water supplies
to lake communities is essential for
the preservation and growth of a
lake community, to maintain an
acceptable “quality of health and
life” standard, and to protect the
physical and financial assets of a
community. The Foundation will
invest in programs, education, and
the development of approaches to
effectively manage potable water
consumption, and to maintain
adequate water supplies and the
water quality of the supplying
aquifer systems.
Land and Energy
Conservation
Energy demands and costs to Lake
Associations are continuing to
escalate. The Foundation will invest
in projects and limited monitoring
studies that advance and increase
energy conservation, e.g., heating
and air-conditioning systems linked
to ground, ground water, or lake
waters to provide higher efficiencies
that conventional systems.
Collaboration and Sharing of
Information with Scientific
Organizations, Lake Mohawk
Reservation, Lake
Associations, Governmental
Entities,Wallkill River
Watershed Communities, and
other Local Communities
Cooperative technical programs,
studies, and information sharing are
essential in achieving the mission of
the Lake Mohawk Preservation
Foundation. Cooperative interaction
among stakeholders results in a
synergism of coordinated efforts,
actions and accomplishments.
Cultural and Social Benefits
Community and cultural benefits
including education, recognizing
and celebrating successes, and
preservation of historical lake
structures are among other purposes
stated in the Foundation’s formation
papers. Specific initiatives will be
determined as we move forward and
attract support from the community.

Lake Mohawk Lifeguards- Sussex County’s 2014
Champs
The 2014 Sussex County Lifeguard
Competition was held at Lake Mohawk
Country Club’s Beach 1 August 11th.
Lifeguard teams from Lake Mohawk,
Lake Lenape, Lake Wallkill, Paulinskill
Lake and Lake Mohawk Pool all
competed in lifesaving skill events.
The Lake Mohawk Country Club in
cooperation with the Sussex County
Aquatic Safety Coalition hosted this
year’s event.
The competition is designed to
bring Waterfront Lifeguards from the
many aquatic facilities within the
county to compete and demonstrate
their lifeguard skills, “and to have
some fun and get together,” said Rich
Carlson, Waterfront Director for
LMCC. “Actually, this competition
was Fran Smith’s idea. She planted
the seed for this after watching our
own Lifeguard Olympics. She loved
bringing the lakes together.”

Beaches
Beach 4
As the summer season draws to a
close we still have a few fun times
ahead at the beach. We are keeping
our fingers crossed for more
beautiful weather to extend the
season a bit longer. Our annual
Oktoberfest Party will be held on
Saturday, September 20th. Please
bring a side dish and your favorite
German beer! We will be cooking
Bratwursts and playing Polkas all
night. Prost!
I would like to take this opportunity
to give much deserved praise to all
the wonderful women of Beach 4
who do so much for each other and
for our little community.
The Beach 4 ladies are some of the
most kind, talented and thoughtful
women I have ever met, and you all
deserve a big “Thank you” for all you
do. An especially big thank you for
the Baby Brunch, which was such a
thoughtful event. I know it meant a
lot to all of the expectant mothers. So
thank you all again, you are the best
and are wonderful role models to the
younger families at the beach.
Though many of us are not quite
ready to think about it yet, Dock Day
will be October 18th, so please mark
your calendars as all dock slip
holders are required to attend.
Remember to check your email or
join our Facebook group for info on
events and important dates. If
anyone is interested in participating
in one of our events, has an idea for a
summer event they would like to see
at the beach, or to be added to our
email list, please contact Kathy or
Christina at [email protected].
Prost!

Thanks to everyone who came out

Beach 6 Garage Sale. This is a great
way to unload some of the items you
have been promising yourself you
would get rid of years ago. It is a
helpful event, if you are like most of
us around the lake; you do not have
ample parking or “visibility” on the
main roads. You can rent a table for
$10.00 and this is open to people
who do not belong to the lake also, so
please tell your friends. The tables
under the tent are first come, first
served, so reserve quickly. Call Carol
with questions or to hold your spot
at 973 729-0275. We also help by
posting an ad in the Sparta Independent
and Township Journal and by putting
signs around town. Set up is 7 a.m.
All leftovers must be hauled away. Do
not fill the dumpster. A good place
to donate is the Sparta Methodist
Church or call the Salvation Army, the
Lupus Foundation or Big Brothers
and Sisters, they will all pick up at
your house.
All are invited to come to our
fabulous Wine Tasting Party on
September 20, at 7 p.m. This is an
adult only party and you are asked to
bring your favorite bottle of wine
which will be disguised for tasting.
Prizes are giving in the White, Red,
Sangria, homemade is encouraged,
and homebrewed beer, call Lena at
973 610-8025. Volunteers are needed;
this is a big one to run. Please look
for an invite from weQwest to see
how you can help with decorations,
set-up, selling tickets, opening wine
and most importantly, clean-up.
Please look for emails and on the
website giving details for the TailGate
Party, this has become a beach favorite.

event for all boat slip renters. Contact

Next month we will have more info
about the Twelve Days of Christmas

Sleepy Lagoon
Summer is winding down, how sad.
Thank you Mike Rennie for organizing
the August Golf Tourney, to Vicki
Sweet for hosting the Pampered Chef
party in her home and donating
funds to the beach and thank you
to the most recent beach dues/
donations, as of August 10, Boffa,
Chiesa, Chletsos, Krops, Lazar, Orlando,
Purdon, Saville and Devine, Somma,
used Paypal, and Yuskaitis.
This summer the Ski Hawks competed
at Regionals in Northampton, Mass.
The team placed 2nd overall and
some of the duos, trios and an allfemale group received accolades as
well. Congrats to our skiers who
worked so hard to give it their all.
Hopefully many of you got to see the
Ski Hawks last show at Beach 1 on
Labor Day.
I am also sure the Labor Day Salsa
Challenge/Pig Roast at Sleepy Lagoon
was as much fun as past years. Thank
you to all who volunteered their time
and talent to make it a success.
Results of the contest will be posted
in the next Papoose.
Thank you also to our General
Manager, Mark Musilli, for helping
combat the bloom of algae in the
lagoon. People love warm weather
but this swimming hole does not.
Mother Nature may continue to
bring nice weather in September.
Take time out to still enjoy time at
the beach, on a boat and in the lake.
Please do not feed the ducks.
We wish all of our teachers and
students a happy and safe return.
Some are starting a new school. We
hope they reap much success.

This spacious lakestyle offers both old world
charm and modern updates. Sitting on 2.41
acres, the large lot is a rare find in the Lake
Mohawk reservation. The yard is open, level and private, perfect for outdoor entertaining. The home combines the
original lakestyle structure and charm with a perfectly designed great room and master suite addition. Features
include four (Yes, four!) fireplaces, an updated kitchen, a large deck and three garage stalls (one attached and two
detached). If you are looking for something rustic, updated, spacious and unique, this is the home for you.

Yacht Club
July was a good month for the
LMYC. On July 4, we held our annual
Independence Day Party for which
we thank all those who planned and
ran the event; and on July 6 we held
our Marine Base Regatta. Two races
were sailed in this handicapped
event in which three Snipes and two
Lightning’s competed. The Enck’s
went over but managed to finish the
first race. In the end, Richard Miner
took first place and Jeff Urbanski, in a
Club Snipe, taking second. Despite a
DNS in the first race, Don Okner
managed to come in third. Thanks to
John and Margie Incantalupo for
serving as our race officials.
There was no racing on July 13
because the work on our “T” dock
interfered with our ability to use our
facilities; but, by July 20 one hoist
was free so we were able to have two
races in which four Lightnings raced.
Rich Miner won the first race with
Don Okner taking second and Chuck
third. In the second race, Rich Miner
captured another first followed by
Perry Anderson in second place and
Chuck Chute in third position followed
by Don Okner in fourth place.
July 27 brought more good wind
and three Lightning’s competed.
With Chuck Chute as our official, we
sailed two races with Rich Miner
first, Perry Anderson second and
Don Okner third in both events. The
following week, August 3, was a light
air day but the Snipes managed to
get in one race with John Marx in
first position followed by Constance
Gill taking a second and Howard
Gooblar, making a much appreciated
return, in third place. August 10
brought more of the doldrums forcing
cancellation of racing for all fleets.
Our Munity Regatta/Jack Robertson
Cruising Day was held on August 2.
This was a great event, organized
by Pirate Constance Gill, in which
the crew took over the boats of the
skippers.
Junior Sailing School ended on
August 1. We extend our congratulations to those who completed the
program and graduated from the
program we also thank our
instructors, Haley Chute and Matt
Gomez, for jobs well done.
August also brought some new

Wow! It has been a month since our

weekend in July every year the team
competes at the Regional level. This
year we went to Easthampton,
Massachusetts for the competition.
This was quite a year at the

members who competed in individual
events, swivel, straps, jump, did us
proud again. This summer, we had
six girls compete in the swivel
competition. In Swivel 1, 15 and
under), Marigrace Yuskaitis placed
2nd, and Anna Rodriguez placed
3rd. They all did a great job and we
are so proud of all our girls. The boys
also did a great job in the jump
event; our three young men, Paul
Schwesinger, Michael Whitham, and
Andrew Yuskaitis took 3rd place,
nice job.
Sunday is team competition. We
were the first team to ski. As soon as
the horn blew to start, so did the
rain. Our skiers skied well in spite of
the weather. They had to stop our
show due to a real down pour of rain,
thank goodness for the barefoot line
and their driver, Damon, who has no
windshield. When the weather finally
cleared we went on to finish strong.
The girls pyramid won overall as the
best pyramid at the competition. All
these accomplishments contributed
to our 2nd place win. It was a great
weekend!
August 8th, FLOAT FEST!!! It was a
truly incredible day. The weather was
perfect, and we had a huge turnout,
thank you to Jack Parker for putting
on a fantastic event. All six bands
were terrific. People came out and
stayed well into the evening. The day
reminded us all how wonderful it is
to live in Lake Mohawk.
Lake Mohawk has plenty of things
to be proud of and the Ski Hawks
are surely one of them, a huge
congratulation to our team.
We wish you all a great fall season.
See you on the water.

House Tour
For the eleventh year, the House Committee of Lake
Mohawk will again sponsor a tour of homes in the
Reservation and will feature five absolutely charming
houses, both old and new, built in the Lake Style. The tour
will be held on Sunday, September 21 from 10:00 until
4:00. An optional special luncheon will be served on the
Boardwalk from 11:30 until 2:00. Tickets for the tour will
be $25 and may be combined with the luncheon for $35.
The luncheon only will be $15. Reservations for the luncheon must be made by calling the Club Office at 973-7296156. Tickets may be purchased at the Club Office and at
Photographs Cameras & Video (43 Theatre Center) during
normal business hours, beginning Monday, September 8.
Please note that the tour has been a complete sell-out and
all tickets will be sold on a first-come basis. If there should
be any tickets not pre-sold, they will be available on the
Boardwalk the morning of the tour from 10-12. No children
under 12 are allowed and everyone must have a ticket. We
ask that there be no photography at the event, please. The
tour will be held rain or shine with all proceeds used to pur-
chase needed items for the Club. The House Committee
recently donated the beautiful Boardwalk Club furniture
and this year will donate all profits to the new Member’s
Room.
The purpose of the tour by the House Committee is not
only to showcase some of the most charming houses on
the Lake but also to promote the use of lake-style or “fanciful” architecture. It is in the best interest of each Club
member to maintain the unique character of our
Reservation, so that we may preserve one of the most distinctive residential areas in the state.

European and local artists appear throughout
this two-bedroom, one-loft home.

beautifully faux-painted to resemble wood.
Outstanding wood paneling, quirky-shaped closet
doors and woodwork by a homeowner, including a
handsome armoire on the second floor, are
especially noticeable in this home. The original
garage and a 50’s addition have become an
open concept kitchen and den. The kitchen has
furniture-like cabinetry, dramatic countertops and
a beautiful tile backsplash. The original maid’s
quarters that were only accessible from the
garage have now become a lovely master
bedroom suite. Artwork from the homeowners’
travels is carefully placed throughout the home.
Notable is a commissioned painting by Val Sears
in the dining room.
This absolutely charming home has incredible
Lake views from almost every room and the
landscaping is perfect. Working off of early
photographs, the recent renovation process
included taking special care to incorporate
products, that although are contemporary, fit the
history and style of the original home.
The gourmet state of the art kitchen includes a
Jennaire electric oven and a Jennaire gas stove
and oven and also has a Lake view. There is a
sought-after first floor master bedroom suite
retreat. Here, a two-sided gas fireplace allows
you to enjoy your jetted soaking tub or relax by
the hearth and enjoy your tranquil bedroom. The
one-of-a-kind shower and space is pure spa
luxury. Additional deluxe features in the master
bedroom suite include a walk in closet and
private access to a covered porch and hot tub.
The must have library/office is light-filled and

Uniquely, the second floor opens into a family
room overlooking the stately entrance foyer

one bedroom has its own balcony. The second
floor includes two and half lovely baths. Another
big surprise is a bonus playroom.
The stone patio is beautiful with year-round views
of the Lake and is built around the unique
natural rock outcroppings.

Through the Seasons
Two longtime friends and residents
of Lake Mohawk, Robin Schwartz
and Isabel Mayer, one a photographer and the other a gardener,
have collaborated on a 9x12

“Lake Mohawk Through The Seasons”.
With over five hundred exquisite
images of enchanting original lake
style homes and gardens, the book
captures the essence and timeless
beauty of our unique community,
including the whimsical shutters and
door knockers, fanciful window
boxes and chimneys, and a myriad of
other architectural details. From
beautiful blossoms in the spring to
the glistening water in summer; from
colorful foliage and fiery sunsets in
the fall to the snow-laced branches
of winter, the four seasons provide a
stunning backdrop from which to
showcase the cabins, cottages and
castles that we love. The book will
be launched and available to be

Sparta Historical Society presents Thomas Edison,
Major Local Employer
Thomas Edison built a massive
industrial complex in Sparta/
Ogdensburg that employed 500 men
at its peak in the late 1800s, only to
close in 1900 forever. Vestiges of his
operation are visible near the
monument on Edison Road, but they
barely hint at the story.
On Thursday, September 11 at 7:30
p.m., the Sparta Historical Society
welcomes Leonard DeGraaf, an
archivist at the Thomas Edison
National Historical Park, who will
present an illustrated program on
this important piece of local history.
While researching for his latest book
on Edison, DeGraaf came across
interviews of miners who had
worked in this complex, including
some who had known Thomas
Edison, so he will share stories of
innovation, business development
and lives of the workers as well as
show photographs of Edison’s ore
milling operation.
Before joining the National Park
Service in 1991, DeGraaf was on the
staff of the Thomas A. Edison Papers.
He is the author of Historic Photos
of Thomas Edison, 2008, and in his
2013 book, Edison and the Rise of
Innovation, he chronicles Edison’s
life and work by making lively and
lavish use of never-before-published
primary sources. The book includes
Edison’s personal and business
correspondence, lab notebooks,
drawings and advertising material,
along with both historic and modern
photographs. Another famous innovator,
Bill Gates, wrote its foreword.
DeGraaf’s books will be available for
purchase and signing. Refreshments
will be served.
This event will be in the lower level
of the Sparta Ambulance Building at
14 Sparta Avenue, Sparta. Admission
to this program is free to all members.
Guests are invited to attend for a
nominal charge of $1 per student, $3
per adult. For more information, please
contact Ed Fritsch at 973-729-0644.

STORM
SEWERS
Storm sewers are the rivers beneath our feet. Where does the storm sewer go?
If you look in the street outside your home or
office and search the parking lots around town,
you will probably find storm sewer inlets. Did you
ever wonder where they go?
A common misconception about storm sewers is that
they go to a waste water treatment plant. This is not
always the case. Storm sewers often transport storm
water, rain, and melting snow, directly to the nearest
river, lake, stream, wetland, or groundwater recharge
basin.
Storm water often contains pollutants found on
streets and parking lots such as oil, antifreeze,
gasoline, soil, litter, pet wastes, fertilizers, pesticides, leaves, and grass clippings. When these
materials enter water they can destroy wildlife
habitats, cause beach closings, and restrict
shellfish harvesting.
36
The Papoose
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
• Don't accumulate soil, leaves, or grass clippings on your driveway, sidewalk, or street.
During the next rain, these materials will wash
into the nearest storm sewer. Compost them
instead.
• Don't dump automotive fluids, paints, pesticides, or other materials down the storm
sewer.
• Apply fertilizers and pesticides in recommended amounts based on results of a soil test.
• Sweep (don't wash) soil, leaves, fertilizer, and
grass clippings off paved areas.
• Dispose of pet wastes by burial.

Phosphorus contributes to
the eutrophication or overenrichment of fresh water
lakes. This leads to an
increase in undesirable weed
and algae growth. Excess
weeds and algae are harmful
to fish and reduce the
aesthetics of a lake. Nitrogen
is the primary cause of overenrichment in Marine Bays.
