Welcome to the The Hague
On the national radar, The Hague is perhaps thought
to be a bit staid and boring, a government town with
little life and persona of its own. What the ‘out of town
locals’ don’t realise is that the ‘internationals’ who call
The Hague home have discovered that this is NOT the
case. The Hague has many hidden faces, many accessible mysteries and a myriad of groups and individuals
that together create a home for new and old residents
alike. Sure, you may find a neighbour who is not readily
approachable, a shop keeper or waiter who does not
seem to capture service mindedness as you may expect,
or an administrative procedure that seems to require
running around in circles. The arrival and settling experiences of other internationals will no doubt focus on
the less than smooth bureaucratic procedures and other
headaches. But behind every curtain of pain and frustration lies a world to be discovered, your new home . . .

An interview with Mayor
Jozias van Aartsen
by Diane Lemieux
www.idiommosaic.com
“The Hague is the only city I would have wanted to
be mayor of in the Netherlands!” The Hague’s new
mayor, Mr. Jozias van Aartsen, took time out from
his busy first months to speak with me in advance
of the Feel at Home in The Hague Fair.
“I think The Hague offers a wonderful quality of life—it
has the cultural and commercial benefits of a city, while
the sea and its many parks makes it pleasant and relaxed. I’ve been told by many foreign residents that they
value the safe environment here where everyone cycles
and teenagers can develop their independence.”
A native of this city, he spoke in a thoughtful, unrushed
manner in his office on the second floor of City Hall. He
was almost keener to talk about the international community than to answer my questions.

“There are so many initiatives in this city that I am just
getting to know. I’m very happy to learn that the Feel at
Home in The Hague Fair exists. I know that the Dutch
can come across as gruff and discourteous, but the city
has come a long way in recent years. Experience in other
European cities tells us that a multicultural and diverse
citizenship is a motor for dynamism and growth. This fair
is an excellent step in getting people settled and fully
functioning in this community from day one.”
Mr. Van Aartsen has been active in Dutch politics at the
national level since 1970. From 1998 to 2002 he was
Minister of Foreign Affairs. It is in part his international

experience for which he was selected for the job. The
current city council was keen to select a mayor who had the city’s international goals at heart and who would enhance
its role as a centre for international peace and justice.

“I take my experience as minister with me to this job. All the travelling I did, all the countries I visited, all of the foreign
dignitaries I met both here in the Netherlands and overseas—this experience helped me see my own country from different points of view. When I was young, The Hague was a provincial city, very inward looking. Today we are an international
city and if we want to live up to our name, we have to embrace the international community with open arms—and not
just because we need to keep the economically important international companies and organisations happy. Openness
and tolerance is part of what this city is all about.”
Mr. Van Aartsen was reluctant to share his plans for his term in office. He has always been a vocal advocate for publicly
electing mayors (they are currently selected by the City Council). He is thus keenly aware of the limitations to his ability
to pursue his own agenda without the backing of the electorate. However, towards the end of our interview he did admit
to having at least one issue at heart.
“What you now see in many parts of the city is burgeoning innovation, a creative drive which didn’t exist 10 or 20 years
ago. The Caballero Fabriek, Korzo Theatre, BorderKitchen—these are small, very small examples, like tiny pieces of New
York in The Hague. From my position I’d like to stimulate this sort of dynamism and creativity which bring the city alive.”

Many people who visit the Netherlands are surprised
by the generous amount of cycling facilities. The Hague
is no exception. The city has a lot of bicycle lanes that
are separated from the road, where it is safe to cycle
(although you should always look out at crossings).
Compared to other capitals, the city is very small.
People who have been here somewhat longer may have
discovered that the bike will get them to a destination
inside the city limits faster than a car or public transport
can, and indeed, this has been proven a number of times.
Very recently, the municipality of Utrecht has started
using a bicycle as an ambulance! In the crowded and
congested inner city, the bicycle can get to an injured
person quicker than an ordinary ambulance. The cyclist
can then give first aid while his motorized colleague is
heading toward him.
Unbelievable as it may seem, not many accidents happen
to cyclists. This is true even though you are not obliged
to wear a helmet when cycling in the Netherlands. Their
behaviour may seem chaotic in foreign eyes, but they
usually know exactly what they are doing. There are
several things you should and should not do, however, if
you decide to give it a try yourself.
Most important: always keep to the right. Before
you turn a corner, indicate where you are going by
sticking out the appropriate hand. Yield to all traffic
approaching from the right (yes, indeed, even cyclists
approaching from the right have right of way in this
country). If you see a cycle path marked by a round blue
sign with a stylized cycle on it, the path is obligatory. If
the indication is a square blue sign with just the word
‘Fietspad’ on it, you are not obliged to use it.
Most streets that are one-way traffic for cars can be
accessed in both directions by cyclists. Watch for the
appropriate indication under the ‘no entrance’ sign.
Contrary to what you see all around you, you are
supposed to stop when the traffic light is red. Also very
important: always keep an eye on the tram rails! Even
cyclists who have lived here all their lives tend to slip on
them occasionally. So the best thing to do is to cross the
rails at a sharp angle.
If you come across dangerous situations, please
report them. The Fietsersbond (Cyclist’s Union) and the
municipality will then see what can be done about them.
The easiest way to report dangerous or, more generally
speaking, ‘cyclist-unfriendly’ situations is by means of
www.fietsindeknel.nl.
Bicycles have one major disadvantage: they are so easy
to steal. In order to prevent that from happening, always
use two locks. Not just the fixed lock for the back wheel,
but always attach your bike to a bike rack, lamp post or
tree by means of a chainlock.
Okay, this is about what you need to know about how to
cycle. The question now is: where to cycle?
Small as it may be, The Hague has a lot of parks. The
Cyclist’s Union has drawn up a route through all of
the parks in the city, over sixty kilometers in total. The
description of the route can be obtained in the City Hall
(at the municipal information centre) and at the Stanley
and Livingstone bookstore in the Schoolstraat. You may
want to wait until the English version is ready, but unfortunately it is not yet clear when that is going to be. The
route itself is marked by yellow signs with arrows and
the word ‘Parkenroute’.
If you don’t want to limit your trip to the city, the
Fietsrouteplanner Zuid-Holland may come in handy. You
will find it (in Dutch only) at http://pzhplanner.demis.

Although there are plenty of opportunities for teenage new arrivals in The Hague to be
dragged around tulip fields and cheese factories with their parents, there is in fact a lot more

Amsterdam’s alternative attractions.

The key to The Hague’s vibrant after-school social scene is its reliable and thorough public
transport system, as well as the Dutch tendency to bike absolutely everywhere. It surprised me
then, when I returned for a visit to the UK six months ago, at how expensive the train tickets
were in comparison—you could pay for a train that looked like a prototype space shuttle when
all you really wanted was for it to run on time and provide enough seats for everyone to sit
down. I similarly noticed how difficult it was to cycle anywhere, especially on a mountain bike,
which is nowhere near as comfortable as the classic ‘sit-up-and-beg’ Dutch bikes. The Netherlands has definitely won me over on that one.
So, if it’s freedom you’re after, Holland’s got it—all you need to do is get yourself a bike and a
strippenkaart. I would also recommend purchasing a discount card from the Dutch national
train network (NS), giving you (and three of your companions) a 40% discount on all train
journeys for a year at only €55. And if you’re especially clever, or skint, get your parents to pay
for one.
rhigh-quality oak parquet
flooring
How should you take advantage of this freedom? Well, I have been travelling the country to
see in excess of 100 bands since I moved here, just over three years ago (the tally was drastically increased by the trendy Dutch festivals of PinkPop and Lowlands). For me it has been
brilliant—Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam are well-established cities on the European and
world circuit, with legendary venues ranging from the Paradiso club to the Ajax Arena, and all
are within an hour’s train ride of The Hague.

My passion happens to be music (in case you haven’t guessed), but for those budding
athletes, joining some of the local clubs could be the perfect way to integrate into the
community and pop that ‘expat bubble’ whilst improving your Dutch. My brother has
been a part of the cricket and rugby scene and has made friends beyond the British

I live next to and attend the BSN in Voorschoten, which is great as I can synchronise my
alarm clock with that of the school’s registration bell and still get to school on time. Yet
the centre of The Hague is only a short 12-minute train journey away (45 minutes by
bike). This comes in handy as I often spend a large part of my
weekend here in The Hague—there are many shops and cafes,

The drinking age in the Netherlands is 16, with spirits only
being served to 18 year olds. This makes going to The Hague on
a Friday night extremely accessible and a great way to meet
more of your peers in the thriving international community
here in The Hague. It is often very difficult to meet people outside of your immediate classmates, so I advise you all to get

If you make just one friend in a different social circle to your

SKETCHING THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
OF THE HAGUE
by Eva László-Herbert | www.logosELH.com
Those bemoaning The Hague’s lack of glitzy glamour (uh, Amsterdam), bon vivant flair (ah, Brussels) and charm (oh,
Antwerp) should think twice before accusing my city of choice of being a boring place. Take it from an expat gone local
during the last ten years: The Hague has an organically growing, varied, authentic and deeply gratifying range of cultural
offerings that is easily accessible to those who have eyes to see and ears to listen. This sampling will hopefully add to
your emotional and intellectual comfort whilst in The Hague.
Film
Irritating for many and a blessing for the linguistically curious, films are generally screened in their original language with Dutch subtitles. Just as every city
on the planet, The Hague has cinemas galore to feature all that Hollywood
and beyond has on offer. My favourite mainstream is the Pathé Buitenhof—a
comfortingly aesthetic building screening themed performances—check out
their Ladies’ Night. A place I would not want to be without is the Filmhuis,
(www.filmhuisdenhaag.nl) opposite the white City Hall—it screens art house films
and all that cinematography produces off the beaten track, often bundled in minifestivals tackling social, cultural, human rights and political issues.
Books
The Hague hosts a series of book stores that cater for all and every taste in
literature and leisure reading. Paagman on the Fred (colloquial for the Frederik
Hendriklaan) is topping the list for ease, service and a great in-house café. Books
in English on Noordeinde is probably the oldest in The Hague, family run and
very reliable. The ABC (www.abc.nl) on the Lange Poten is a landmark for global
bookworms—family owned, most versatile and happy to talk and advise. Check
out their upstairs art gallery, get a customer card and subscribe to their newsletter. Verwijs in the Passage is a temple of the printed word, probably the biggest in town. Za-Zen on the Zoutmanstraat carries a full range of what nowadays
is best described as ‘spiritual literature’ and has outstanding service.
A true blessing for all lovers of the written word, the BorderKitchen
(www.borderkitchen.nl) on the Weimarstraat hosts live interviews with some of
the best international authors around, usually in English—a must.
Theatre
Thanks to STET (www.theenglishtheatre.nl) and TUSK (www.tusktheatre.com)
English language theatre has a permanent home in The Hague. Passionate
professionals, their performances are a tribute to all thespians—check their
web site regularly for studio performances, open-air theatre and inspired workshops. If you have corporate money to spend on intelligent sponsorship they are
a worthy cause indeed. The Koninklijke Schouwburg (www.ks.nl) and the Theater
aan het Spui (www.theateraanhetspui.nl) occasionally feature performances in
English and French—see you there.
Last but not least—the AATG (www.aatg.nl) is a gem of the local amateur anglophile thespian community—see them, join them, support them! Their performances are always a highlight in the cultural calendar of the city.
Dance & Ballet
The obvious favourite is the Lucent Danstheater (www.ldt.nl), which has earned
The Hague a worldwide reputation for innovation and excellence in contemporary dance. If you’re in for the pocket version of the above, bookmark the Korzo (www.korzo.nl) and the Zwembad De Regentes (www.deregentes.nl) for
frequent reference. And remember: I said ‘frequent’ and I mean it!
8
Classical Music
The Dr. Anton Philipszaal (www.philipszaal.nl) does not
need any further introduction—they have a season
ticket program catering for all streams within the genre;
and I appreciate their free Sunday coffee concerts, the
many educational activities for young and old alike and
the overall quality and vision of those in charge. The
Nieuwe Kerk, just opposite the DAPZ, often hosts classical and modern music concerts where enjoyment and
brilliance is further enhanced by the architecture. The
Koninklijk Conservatorium (Royal Conservatory) is worldfamous for its early music section—their concerts are a
must for every connoisseur and musical gourmet. (www.
koncon.nl) A relatively new and deeply dedicated private
initiative, the Stichting Musica Antica de Camera (www.
musantica.nl) graces our city with outstanding performances of rarely heard gems of the universal musical
heritage, specialising in baroque music. They deserve all
and every support.
Art & Museums
The museums of The Hague are listed in any wellresearched city guide. Favourites are the Gemeente
museum (www.gemeentemuseum.nl), the GEM
museum
of
contemporary
art
(www.gemonline.nl), and the Fotomuseum Den Haag (www.
fotomuseumdenhaag.nl), true citadels of art made
palatable to all ages, conveniently located in
adjoining buildings. Their websites in English deserve
badges of honour, going beyond the usual babblefish
level of translation one sadly gets used to when living
abroad.
Festivals
The festival landscape of The Hague has known un
precedented proliferation during the last years, showcasing the city’s efforts to bundle cultural highlights
in every genre. Most of them can be found on the city
website www.denhaag.com and www.thehagueonline.
com. My personal favourite is the annual Crossing Border
(November), a festival that embraces word, sound, and
visual and tactile art. Praises would go far beyond the
available space; just make sure you have your tickets
booked in time. The annual ‘Tour of the world in The
Hague’ (Wereldreis in eigen stad) goes mostly unnoticed
by expats. It is highly recommendable, as it leads the inquisitive visitor through many neighbourhoods and all the
different cultures of The Hague. It is organised by NGOs
and the municipal office for integration—check www.
denhaag.com for more information. An event that fits
no box is the annual International Food Fair (November)
the single biggest charity event of the local international
community. For more information, contact www.parish.
nl. Neither the space nor the scope of this brief review
allows for more than just touching upon the tip of the
cultural iceberg, meaning that much more than the above
awaits the discerning connoisseur. The Hague will not reveal all its attractions at once, so get ready to discover,
explore and enjoy—take your time and take it easy!

The Expatriate Archive Centre
a fascinating place for all who are and were expatriates.
by the Archive Team
www.xpatarchive.com
As from April 2008 the Expatriate Archive Centre (the
Archive) is no longer part of the Shell group but belongs
to the whole expatriate community—sounds good, but
what does it mean?
It means that the mission that six years ago was
set by three forward-thinking and highly creative
women “to collect, preserve and make accessible the life
stories of expatriates”, is now no longer only open for
Shell expatriates, but for all wherever they are or have
been living and working as expatriates. Whether your
background is/was in business, diplomatic service or in
an international institution, be it UN, NGO or others, we
at the Archive are interested in your experiences and
stories. The Archive’s collection is growing and
growing—daily we receive expatriate history and keep it
for future generations and research.
We invite all expats and repats in The Hague to come
and visit the Archive in the Paramaribostraat (off
Surinamestraat) in the Archipel. Every six weeks we
have special introduction mornings to show you around
and to inspire you . . . and maybe find a name or a story
you know yourself. Check our website for the dates.
Projects and the Source Book
The Archive runs an Oral History project. In this project,
we train people to interview others whose stories we
would not like to lose. We have collected some fascinating stories in this way.
And for those who have been looking at these overflowing boxes with memories and thinking about the book
that is hidden somewhere in there but never seems to
be written, we have started Out of the Boxes—a writing
project to help you and to get your book on the Archive’s
shelves!
To get to know the Archive, its work and collection, we
highly recommend our recently published Source Book.
The Source Book gives you a good idea of what the
Archive is about and shows how valuable it is to keep
a record for the future. To order the Source Book and
get more information on the projects, visit our website:
www.xpatarchive.com.
“Whenever I tell people about the work we do and the
collection we have, it is a joy to see people’s faces lighting up when finally they have found a place to leave their
or their families’ memories, be it in writings, letters, films
and/or artefacts, which might otherwise be forgotten or
worse . . . thrown away!”, says Elske van Holk, director at
the Archive, May 2008.
Do remember—your stories, pictures, blogs and
artefacts that seem of no great or only personal importance today are tomorrow’s history! Feel free to drop in
at any time the Archive is open. The Archive Team is there
to welcome you!

Hague
The sound of the suburbs
by Jo Parfitt
www.expatrollercoaster.com
There is no doubt that life in The Hague is good. There
is plenty to do, countless bars, music venues, shops,
markets, museums, galleries and theatres. The public transport system is reliable, regular and affordable,
and everyone speaks English. With many international
schools in the city, including the ISH (International
School of The Hague), the French school and the German
schools in addition to the junior departments of the British School, you can wonder what makes many thousands
of expatriates choose to live anywhere else. Yet the suburbs and villages that skirt The Hague remain popular.
Voorschoten
Take Voorschoten, for
example, where I live.The
trams do not stretch this
far so you would expect
this large village to only
be the choice of those
with children attending
the senior department
of the British School. Yet
many pick Voorschoten
because of its distance
from The Hague, not despite it. And it’s still well
connected by train, bus,
road and cycle path.
Voorschoten has a village atmosphere, yet from the 415-hectare Horsten park
on its doorstep, you can still see the modern towers of
the city of The Hague. Its cobbled Voorstraat buzzes with
life, is home to the Friday market, several street-side restaurants and regular celebrations, such as the Geranium
market, Queens’ Day, live music and the precisely named
Weekend Voorschoten each September. In July there is
the famous Paardenmarkt (horse market) too, complete
with carriage racing.
A sports club popular with the locals and expats is Stein
Sports. It has well-tended squash courts, a huge gym,
regular classes and a busy bar. At the weekends particularly, or the regular fundraising events, leagues and
spinning marathons make this the place for the whole
family.
Wassenaaar
Again, the American school is a big draw, bringing with it
a huge range of sporting and other events that form this
active and inclusive community of parents and children.
Look closer and you find many other reasons for coming
here, not least the Duinrell fun and water park and the
12
beach, which is quieter than Scheveningen and yet still
has the beach bars and the dunes.
Adriana Volenikova is Slovakian and chose Wassenaar
despite having a child below school age. “Everyone
knows each other here due to the fact that the children
greet each other on the street and then the parents are
‘forced’ to talk to each other. We always meet someone
either on the Langstraat or local eateries and supermarket,” she says.
Wassenaar is well known for its friendliness, largely
because of its welcome
basket scheme, whereby all those registering with the gemeente
(municipality) are then
visited by a resident
and given a basket of
local information.
Voorburg
Voorburg, like its neighbour
Leidschendam,
is often the choice
for those who want
a halfway house, still
connected to the city’s
public transport network, but with a village
atmosphere. Again, the old part of the town is the place
to be, according to Swedish Ingela Seif.
“De Herenstraat has nice shops and restaurants,” she
says. “On Saturdays there is a small local market there
between the two parks. Many expats join the Westvliet
sports club, which has an English section on its website
and is planning a special event for newcoming expats in
October.”
Leidschendam
Mega Suwito, Indonesian, lives in Leidschendam and, after many years here, is part of the Dutch, Indonesian and
expat communities and thinks Leidschendam has a good
community spirit. She has become involved with the
Trinity Church there, which is very international. There
is de Fluit sports centre, a village atmosphere and the
large Leidsenhage shopping complex, so there is plenty
to keep you busy in an environment that is somewhat
greener than the city, yet very close to it.
“Public transport is excellent here with quick access
to all the international schools and still with plenty of
green spaces. It is quiet, peaceful, safe and friendly,” says
Mega.
the old church bell and spotting the horse-drawn tram,”
she says.
Rijswijk
And don’t forget Rijswijk, home of the European Patent
Office as well as one of Shell’s offices. Here, according to
British Lisa Hall, the centre of the old town still retains a
very Dutch atmosphere.
It is clearly a lively place with plenty of culture and nightlife. Barbara particularly enjoys the Lumen filmhuis.
“Many expats love to dance here and there is Scottish
country dancing available here as well as an active dance
school called Wesseling, that offers everything from
salsa to street dancing,” she says.
“The Saturday market and other local events remind me
of the strong community spirit here. It is very friendly. I
meet people when I am walking my dog and out with my
son too. I have found many people here prefer to communicate in Dutch. I even take yoga in Dutch and am
glad I have been taking lessons,” she says.
Delft
The town of Delft is well connected to The Hague, yet
has its own identity, partly because of its university and
its connections to art. It was the choice of Italian Barbara
Reale because of its medieval charm. “I love the way the
buildings reflect in the canals at twilight, the sound of
The Delftians expat club, which has almost 200 members
since it began two years ago, meets at 8pm every other
Thursday in de Ruif and has a busy calendar of events.
There is also an English church service every Sunday at
noon in the Oude Kerk.
Will you choose medieval charm, open space, schools,
shops or tram routes? The fact that such choice is available means that it is no surprise to me to learn that the

Business basics:
How to start your business in the Netherlands
by Suzy Ogé
www.etceteraconsulting.net
Do you have a great business idea but are not sure
where to start? You are not alone. Starting a business is
an enormous challenge. In a foreign country, navigating
the maze of bureaucracy, cutting through the red tape
and understanding the business climate can be even
more daunting. All things considered, the Netherlands is
an attractive country in which to register your business
and the government does try to stimulate new business.
Here are three things to keep in mind as you start:
ship (eenmanszaak) you can easily handle the obligatory
registration yourself at the Chamber of Commerce
(Kamer van Koophandel, or KVK). The tax issues of
your business are best handled by a local professional,
especially if you do not speak Dutch, as the tax office
(Belastingdienst) is unwilling to assist over the phone in
other languages.
The third tip for starting a successful business in the
Netherlands is to build a professional network. Seek out

It’s strange, really—we travel to find new scenery, new
foods and new perspectives, yet we find comfort in
familiar things. Suddenly, there’s a desire to recreate
those Sunday breakfasts of buttermilk pancakes served
with lashings of maple syrup and blueberries, or to
bake a “hummingbird” cake, or to BBQ a good British
sausage on a summer evening, to name but a few
national cravings. Not so long ago, it was impossible
to find a Mexican tortilla or even an avocado in The
Hague but oh, how things have changed. Now there
is an abundance of products available in the city, but a
little insider knowledge can save a lot of footwork.
Allow me to give you a brief taster of what is available
in your new city. . .
Firstly, there are two shops that stock international
products in The Hague—Kelly’s on Piet Heinstraat is
nearly opposite the ever-popular Crunch Café, and
Thomas Green’s on the Frederik Heindriklaan across
from Simone de Vogel’s wonderful deli. These two stock
a huge range of products ranging from Hovis yeast,
double and clotted creams, baking products, Bisquick,
Irish and British sausages, scotch eggs, elderflower and
rose petal cordials, teas and beers, to frozen products,
pies, chutneys, and jams. A visit to these shops will
certainly cure those pangs of homesickness, and if the
©Lucidpics
product is not in stock they may be able to get it for you.
While on Piet Heinstraat, pop into the Balkan and Italian delicatessens (the Caprino cheese from Italy there is the best I
have ever tasted). Then, if honest Polish bread and sausage is your thing, walk away from Crunch up to the Zoutmanstraat
where you will find not only Polish delicatessens but Moroccan gifts aplenty. Walk on to Prins Hendrikstraat where Chester cooks up British-style beer-battered fish ‘n chips on Thursday and Friday nights (nearby the Co-Op supermarket) and
on to the Maxima Bakery for the best flat breads (lavash) in the city.
Working at various organizations or having certain club memberships may also entitle you to shop at the Silgro/Ven
Superstores in Voorburg and Leidschendam. These stores are where local business including restaurateurs shop and you
can see why—several of these carry products that can’t be found anywhere else. Our family would be bereft without our
SW label tins of stewed Italian tomatoes, black beans, chick peas, quails eggs, halloumi cheese, frozen croissants, pain au
chocolate, and bitter chocolate mousse, among other delectables.

For wild mushrooms and organic fare, take time to visit the organic market on the Hofweg in the centre of the city on
Wednesdays. Also take a look at the new Eko and Asian foods supermarkets below Lush on the Spuistraat. The Wagenstraat and surrounding streets are home to a revitalized “Chinatown” area and have many specialty stores, supplying
almost everything one could need for many styles of cuisine.
The Weimarstraat is another great shopping street, with something for everyone, including the fabulous party and
decorating/packaging shops—Studio Pat, and the Bokstijn party accessory shop.
For herbs, fresh and cheap produce, fish and all sorts of everything else, try the Haagse Markt, open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday on Herman Costerstraat, but do go early before it gets too packed. It’s such a diverse melting
pot of tastes, styles and cultures, you’ll wonder where you are as you chew on your freshly-made firit (round doughnutshaped bread with sesame seeds or without) but it’s a short trip back to the centrum of The Hague.

Oh the shops, the shops; my kingdom for a shop where
the goods are great, the service is kind and gentle—
and the price reflects the quality of the product. I like
sustainability, originality and fun, and I can tell you there
is shopping and there is fun shopping. I play down the
latter when my children are around but “product
passion” is a tiny failing of mine. If you are a keen shopper, then you will enjoy this city, although it can take a
little time to find shoppers gold! Below are a few tips on
where to go. Enjoy!
upmarket as the Bijenkorf but has an excellent home
furnishing range with fantastic bed linen and cushions.
Journey onwards through the walking streets until you
come to the Passage, the oldest covered shopping street
in the city. There’s a tiny kid’s shoe shop and the wonderful Verwijs bookstore with a Bagels and Beans café
on the first floor. Whilst adults can relax with a passable
bagel melt and coffee, kids can browse through the English selection of books. Look out for Dok below with its
extensive cookery goodies.
So, you are new in town, just off the train and the city
awaits. If you are a department store (one shop, one
stop) buff, then De Bijenkorf is probably the store for you.
Located in prime position in Spuistraat, this store has it
all: an excellent bed linen and soft furnishing department, a huge range of clothing and footwear labels,
wonderful china and cooking utensils and my favourite: the café on the third floor—try the sushi and salad
selection. Holder of various prestigious sandwich
“awards”, there is something for every jaded shopper’s
palate in this self-service café.
Carry on towards and past the Grote Kerk, taking time
to drop in to Berlage, one of the best stationery shops in
town and then walk the Prinsestraat, probably the quirkiest and grooviest street in The Hague, with restaurants
and boutiques aplenty. Don’t forget to visit Wwen’s, especially if you have a teenage daughter in tow.
Hema, next door to De Bijenkorf and located on several
high streets throughout the country, is the colourful and
more affordable little sister to the big department stores
and has a great range of party goodies, gardening goods
and essential thingies. I have taken many an overseas
visitor who raves about this store and its stationary/
linen and clothes. Try them for hosiery, confectionery, party gear, snacks, seasonal gifts, bed linen, bicycle
repairs kits and everything, really.
Now hop on your newly-acquired bike, avoiding the tram
lines, and head to Reinkenstraat where there lurks a shop
for every taste. Travel through to Aert van der Goesstraat
(grab a cake or pain au raisin at Phippe Galerne,) and
onto the beginning of the Frederik Hendriklaan, known
affectionately as ‘the Fred’ to locals who work at the
IGOs around the Statenkwartier. Pop into Simon de
Vogel’s deli for a takeaway sandwich, which you can eat
in the garden around the back of the Omniversum.
This little selection is merely the tip of the shopping and
lunching iceberg—try the main street in Voorburg, the
Denneweg in The Hague and old Rijswijk as well. And be
sure to let www.thehagueonline.com know if you strike
shoppers gold!

Antique Shopping in Holland
by Toma Haines, aka The Antiques Diva™
www.antiquesdiva.com
Antiques have fallen out of favor and every Jan, Henk
and Peter is cleaning his “zolder”, banishing anything
baroque or beyond. As the Dutch lose interest in antiques, prices drop and shoppers benefit! The time is
ripe to cash in—“one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” A perfect place to start shopping is
Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier where the best antique
shops congregate in the shadow of the Rijksmuseum.
Also visit De Looier Antique Mall, Elandsgracht 109,
which offers lower-end items and prices.
Though I’m not a fan of Amsterdam’s flea
markets, the Albert Cuypmarkt and Waterlooplein are
institutions. The Monday Noordermarkt is heavy
on the fleas, but a few antiques can be found. On
Sundays, May to October, the Nieuwmarkt offers
casual browsing. The best bargains can be found in
Amsterdam’ auction houses—De Eland or De Zwann.
An auction seems daunting, but do go to viewings
and peruse catalogs. If serious about buying, ask that
your lot be sold in English. While not budget
conscious, Sotheby’s and Christies always offer
English.
But what really counts is
Eisenhowerlaan 134
To the tourist The Hague has so much interesting places to visit. But for you,
being an expat, even more. Eisenhowerlaan 134. As it happens this is the GBA office,
just the specialists in international tax legislation. Our Tax and Expatriate Centre is even
more renowned. Not surprisingly, as it has all the expertise in finance you’ll ever need.
Experts that will answer all your questions. In a way that suits your ideas of service.
So why wouldn’t you pay this place of interest a visit?
If there’s one thing the Netherlands does well, it is
antique fairs. The pièce de résistance is TEFAF, the
world’s leading art and antique show, held each
March in Maastricht. Maastricht complements the
fair with a great number of antique shops clustered
in the Wijck district. But ‘s Hertogenbosch (Den
Bosch) hosts AFSH, with prices targeted more at
Mercedes drivers than those with private jets. I find
this high-end fair more accessible for extravagant
splurges. As in Maastricht, Den Bosch has its own
antiques quarter.

While Amsterdam is charming, The Hague feels regal
with international flavor! May through October, on
Thursdays and Sundays, the Lange Voorhout Antiek
Markt sells the sort of brocante items you would find
on a stroll through Provence. Around the corner from
this square is the main antiques artery—Denneweg
and Frederikstraat. Similar to the Spiegelkwartier but
smaller, there is a greater range in high- to low-end
items. A short walk away, the Noordeinde is necessary
for gallery hopping!

Adapting to life in a new country is easier once you
understand the traditions and cultural festivities.
Holland has some traditions to which it is very loyal, a
few of them specific to The Hague.
On 29 April, the night before Queen’s Day, there is
Koninginnenacht, a night of partying and music. In The
Hague there is KoninginnenNach, a free open-air music
festival that has been taking place in The Hague since
1989. Besides performances on several openair stages throughout
the city centre, there is
also a lot of live music
in cafés and bars. While
Koninginnenacht
is
celebrated throughout
the country, KoninginneNach is a true Hague
tradition.

The next day, 30 April,
is
Koninginnedag
(Queen’s Day), a national holiday celebrating
the Queen’s birthday.
Queen Beatrix was actually born on 31 January, but because of the weather
she decided that Koninginnedag would continue to
take place as before on 30 April, the birthday of her
mother, Queen Juliana. National flags (complete with
the orange standard) appear everywhere, adding to the
festive spirit. This is another time of year when anything
orange goes!
A Koninginnedag tradition is the vrijmarkt, the free
market or jumble sale. In many streets people set up
stands and sell old toys, clothes, or other things they
don’t need anymore. They put out their wares and then
wait for the masses to come. And do they! The Fred,
Belgisch Park and the square outside the Albert Heijn in
Benoordenhout are a few of the busier areas. There are
also neighborhood fun fairs on the Fred as well as on the
Lange Voorhout.
In May, on the Saturday before Whitsun is Vlaggetjesdag
(flags day), named for the flags decorating the fishing
boats as they left the harbour to fish for herring. Although
fishing has changed since the old days, Vlaggetjesdag
still celebrates the arrival of the first herring. The boats
are still decorated with little flags, and the first catch
is auctioned off, with the proceeds destined for charity.
Scheveningen harbour is the place to witness this very
Dutch event.
In July, in addition to flags on the flagpoles around
town, you may also see backpacks hanging as well. This
bag-flag combination signifies a happy occasion—someone’s high school graduation. Besides the official flag
days, the Dutch are also allowed to raise their flags on
happy occasions such as these. So whenever you see the
backpack flying, remember to congratulate the proud
parents and graduate!
Every third Tuesday in September is
Prinsjesdag
(Little
Princes Day), an important day for Dutch
politics, when the
Queen delivers a
speech setting forth
the
government
policy for the coming year. Beforehand,
the Queen and her
entourage are driven
in a golden carriage
from the palace on
the Noordeinde to the
Ridderzaal, where the
speech takes place. All
the women present wear hats, which are always heavily
discussed in the media afterwards. Many onlookers line
the streets to wave to their Queen and the royal family.
Every November, Dutch children eagerly await the arrival
of Sinterklaas, the patron saint of children, as he sails by
steamboat from his home in Spain to the Netherlands.
Sinterklaas arrives early (15 November this year) to be in
time for all the preparations. He makes a grand entrance
sailing into the harbour of Scheveningen and then tours
the city. Along the way, Zwarte Piet helpers give out
traditional sweets and small cookies called pepernoten
to enthusiastic children.
On 5 December, Sinterklaas brings presents to all the
children who have been good, so he is often compared
to Father Christmas and Santa Claus. Together with his
horse Americo and his helper Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), he
goes from roof to roof and delivers presents through the
chimney.
The holiday comes with many songs, sung by the
chimney to encourage Sinterklaas to come and bring
presents. Even if you don’t speak Dutch, after a few
weeks of hearing these songs in almost every shopping
street in town, you too will start humming along.

of doubts about it, but decided to
investigate further. I looked at the
website recommended by a friend:
ACCESS. I liked it and thought: “Why

Hi, there! My name’s Mike and I like to go and see bands...
And luckily for me, the live music scene here in the Netherlands—in Amsterdam/The Hague/Rotterdam, to be
more precise—is excellent. I think that bands sound better in small venues... I don’t know why, but they do!
Fortunately we are spoilt here in Holland by the many
little clubs hidden away down dark alleys—the only
problem is that you have to find them in the first place!
Places like De Vinger on Bagijnestraat, Bazart on Loosduinseweg and Muziekcafé De Paap on Papestraat. One
of my favourites is the Winston Club in Amsterdam
(Warmoesstraat), which is a steamy boiler room of a
venue. Pop along to any of these on a Thursday, Friday
or Saturday evening and the chances are you’ll be very
pleasantly surprised.
Of course Holland also puts on large stadium concerts
for the Madonnas and Michael Jacksons of this world,
however it is still possible to see big name international
bands in smaller venues such as Het Paard, the Paradiso,
Rotown and the Melkweg.
The Paradiso in Amsterdam (Weteringschans, just off
Leidseplein) has to be one of the best venues in the
world. It’s in an old church with fantastic acoustics, and
the original stained glass windows are illuminated to
great effect behind the performers. They also have a
smaller room that is put to particularly good use during
the many festivals that the Paradiso hosts as different
bands alternately play on each of the stages. Of these
festivals my favourite is the three-day ‘London Calling’,
which is a great showcase of up-and-coming British
musical talent.
I have been visiting the Melkweg (Lijnbaansgracht in
Amsterdam, also just off Leidseplein) since I was at university more than 20 years ago. I’d fly over to Amsterdam
for the weekend, stay in a hotel just around the corner
from Leidseplein and spend the afternoons and evenings
in this great club. As well as live performance areas, the
Melkweg also has a cinema for alternative films and an
exhibition area as well as various chill out areas and a
cafe that does great chocolate cake (still the same great
cake after 20 years!). In recent years the Melkweg has
added a much larger band performance area which they
call the Max.
When visiting the Melkweg or the Paradiso, may I suggest that you combine the concert with a falafel from one
of Maoz’s excellent take-away restaurants (possibly the
best falafels on the planet). Maoz falafels can be found at
Muntplein by Rembrandtplein and on Leidsestraat close
to Leidseplein. (I should get a free falafel for this plug!)
Rotown in Rotterdam (Nieuwe Binnenweg) is just a short
walk from the station, and trains from The Hague take
only 20 minutes to get there. If you fancy seeing a gig
here I recommend you get there early because Rotown
also has a really good restaurant. While enjoying your
meal, you usually get the chance to chat to the band that
will probably be eating there too.
Het Paard van Troje (the Trojan horse) is The Hague’s
newly renovated jewel of a band venue and just a hop,
skip and jump from home (Prinsegracht 12). Most nights
of the week something is going on here and Het Paard
also organises various festivals throughout the year. The
bar next to Het Paard is one of my favourite spots to
hang out and a great place to meet before a gig.
Although there are many music festivals taking place in
The Hague throughout the year, particularly notable are
the Crossing Border festival and Parkpop.
The Crossing Border festival takes place in the Koninklijke
Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) in The Hague over a number
of days in November. It is a combination of a literary
festival and music festival and is an incredible opportunity to see internationally acclaimed artists... and buy
their books and cds.
Parkpop is the largest free music festival in Europe, and
it’s on our doorstep in Zuiderpark. They put on a spectacular line-up of big name bands that this year included
Sheryl Crow, Kula Shaker, The Proclaimers and British
indie band The Hoosiers. Tickets for gigs can be purchased in advance either online (www.ticketmaster.nl)
or from the post office. If a concert that you desperately
want to see is sold out, I suggest you go along anyway.
I have always managed to buy tickets on the door from
some poor soul who has bought too many. Just make
sure you arrive early and I guarantee you will be able to
get in!
I write a monthly column for www.thehagueonline.com
suggesting a few gigs that may be of interest to anyone
who likes seeing live music in smaller venues. I also love
to receive your music related comments and recommendations at [email protected].

Twelfth Night was one of the high points of the 2007 Edinburgh
Fringe Festival. Filter’s production of Twelfth Night is a dynamic
new version of William Shakespeare’s comedy in which romance; satire and mistaken identity provide plenty of confusion
and laughter. This production is also one of the most accessible
and exciting English language performances for a wider international audience. Filter uses text, music and sound in innovative ways in order to tell this romantic comedy in the form of a
musical encounter with Shakespeare.

National Theatre | 16 - 18 October, 8:15 pm
The Waves, published in 1931, is Virginia Woolf’s most experimental novel. The book consists of monologues by six different characters who reflect upon the inner growth they have undergone
since childhood. This subject, not immediately very theatrical,
was the challenging starting point for Conductor Katie Mitchell
to embark on a unique and controversial experiment in theatre.
This is a brilliant multi-media production revealing a spellbinding theatrical imagination.
Which, for those who are susceptible to it, touches upon the
ineffable, the mystery of human existence.

Discussion after the show on Friday 27 March
Written for TAG, Yellow Moon is a searing new play from one
of Scotland’s finest playwrights, David Greig. A modern Bonnie
and Clyde tale that follows the fortunes of two teenagers on
the run. Silent Leila is an introverted girl who has a passion for
celebrity magazines. Stag Lee Macalinden is the deadest of dead
end kids in a dead end town. They never meant to get mixed up
in a murder...but now they need a place to hide.

The Hague is well-known as the ‘International City of Peace and Justice’
Scheveningen
with all the international tribunals as
well as Eurojust and Europol and big multinationals like Shell, Siemens, KPN,
Aegon and ING as well as a lot of small- and medium-sized companies..
All these companies attract a large number of international professionals
who are working and living in the area of The Hague for an assignment
abroad mostly for a fixed period of time.
If you are an expat new to The Hague, then do you know what to expect? And where to
find what you are looking for? And who to work with getting you started? Probably not.
Finding a place to live in The Hague for rent or to buy can be quite a challenge. Especially if you
don’t know where to look or where to start. You need a house or apartment that suits your situation,
that you can truly call your home.

The Hague: Music city?
by Andrew Wright
I must start by declaring my ignorance: I’m going
to ignore all local activity relating to concertos, symphonies and similar highbrow stuff composed by
deaf/daft blokes, probably from Vienna, who have
been dead 200 years. I may be a philistine (blame my
parents), but I do however know more than a little of
what we might call popular music, so trust me on
this. And if you’re pushed for time, here’s my verdict:
considering The Hague is a city of less than half a million, it provides a range of events more in keeping
with a place twice that size.
This is most apparent in its festivals. If there’s no
snow on the ground, there’s probably a festival
going on nearby. The biggest of these is Parkpop,
which takes place at the end of June in the Zuiderpark
on the southeast side of the city. Park, yes, but pop? It’s
more than that—rock, jazz, blues, R & B, hip hop, and
folk are all usually represented. One of the three stages is reserved for local talent—a nice touch, and there
really is some local talent. Promoted by the City
Council as ‘the Biggest Free Festival in Europe’, there
are upwards of 20 acts, mostly well-known names.
This year’s headliner was Sheryl Crow, supported by
Kula Shaker, The Proclaimers and an astonishing guitarist called Monte Montgomery.
If the sun shines, Parkpop is a great day out, with
families aplenty strolling among festival regulars.
Don’t let the Council’s ludicrous claims of ‘250,000
attendance’ put you off. There is clearly someone in
the PR Department with an over-active imagination
and a wobbly grasp of figures. It’s probably no more
than 50,000.
Other outdoor festivals include Schollenpop, on Kijkduin beach at the beginning of August, and the Plein
Open, on two stages in a city square. We shouldn’t
forget the immediate locality: Leidschendam has
Vlietpop, Leiden has Werfpop and slightly further
afield, Rotterdam has
Metropolis, which
usually follows the
week after Parkpop
and rivals it in size
and quality.
42
Another major festival in The Hague, of the buy-aticket indoor variety takes place in November. Crossing
Borders is more of an
arts festival including
music, aimed at a more
mature and intellectual audience. During
its five days, authors,
filmmakers and the
like give lectures and
workshops, but the
final two days always
feature some excellent
performers. Eclectic is
a key word here. Apart
from some fashionable bands and rising stars, there
might be a Balkan country & western trio or a Peruvian reggae band, if not an Icelandic skiffle group. All
styles served here . . .
Until a couple of years ago, North Sea Jazz, one of the
European festivals, took place in The Hague. It has
now moved down the road to the Ahoy complex in
Rotterdam, but it’s none the worse for that. Here, we
now have Hague Jazz, which is more modest but still
worthwhile for those who appreciate a mean horn.
As for regular music venues, the premier local gig has
to be the Paard van Troje, known to everyone simply as
The Paard. I’d guess it has a capacity of about a thousand. It has a great stage and a balcony for those who
don’t want to look at the backs of tall Dutchmen. They
present major touring bands and host dance events,
reggae battles, discos and more. A tram ride away
in Zoetermeer, the Boerderij regularly presents established rock names.
The HagueOnline.com always has news of upcoming
musical treats, and I especially recommend that you
check out Mike Grunfeld’s monthly column, The Music
in Mike’s Head. This guy really knows what’s going on,
from the small clubs to the big halls, and not just in
The Hague either. Thanks for many good tips, Mike!
So, if you’re new to The Hague or haven’t looked into
the music scene hereabouts, do yourself a favour and
get out and about. There’s so much to enjoy, and it’s
frequently free!
