It is forty days after Easter and marks the day that Jesus and his followers walked from Jerusalem toward Bethany for what would become a
unforgettable spiritual experience.
Mark’s gospel summarizes the amazing spiritual events of that day.
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he
sat at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). Luke’s gospel adds the detail that
He raised up His hands and blessed them (Luke 24:50). In Acts, Luke gives
more detail to the conversation they had on the walk out of Jerusalem, about
kingdoms and the Holy Spirit coming on them (Acts 1:6-9).
This day was very important to Jesus. The followers seemed to be a
little surprised by what happened, but Jesus had spoken about it clearly.
John’s gospel doesn’t give any record of the actual day of Jesus’ ascension,
but it quotes Jesus on three different occasions foretelling of that special moment when He would return to heaven (John 6:61-62—Jesus foretells the
ascension when the disciples were finding His teaching that He was the
Bread of Life was hard; John 7:33-34—when the Jewish leaders were trying
to seize Him and kill Him; John 14:28-31—when Jesus was eating the Last
Supper with His disciples).
The epistles note this momentous spiritual occasion (1 Peter 3:22; 1
Tim. 3:16; Heb. 4:14) that was witnessed by many, unlike the transfiguration
that was only witnessed by Peter, James and John.
Take some time to reflect on this day. What would it have been like if
you were there? In the forty days since His resurrection, Jesus had appeared
to individuals and groups, eating, teaching, confirming His resurrection. The
ones who saw Him in Jerusalem that day had no idea that He would ascend
to heaven. They walked at least two miles (Bethany was 2 miles away), and
I’m sure He talked to them. Did they know this was their last meeting with
their risen Lord?
I love the way He left them, His arm raised in a blessing. I heard a
definition of blessing this week that brings greater light to His act—a blessing is when God tilts the favor of the universe in your direction. He went up
to heaven with His eyes of love on the people He had chosen to be His witnesses to take the gospel into all the world. Imagine what He saw as His feet
left the ground, His face looking down upon the earth. He saw Jerusalem,
Samaria, Judea and the utterparts of the earth as He left His followers to take
His message of love and redemption into all the world.

We live in stormy times. The heat around the local government elections is
building up. This happens during a time of general political unrest in South Africa, an alarmingly high unemployment rate, an economic crisis, falling Rand
and one of the worst droughts in memory.
How do we as Christians react to this situation? I suppose the correct answer
should be: Pray! But the real reaction often is anger, complaining, lamenting,
fear, despondency, even apathy.
1 Timothy 2,1-7 is a helpful instruction to Christians. At the time of its writing
they were facing even more challenging times than us. As Christian minority
they were at best tolerated, at worst persecuted and killed.
They are challenged: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone” (Verse 1). These four words give
us a better understanding as to what is meant by prayer. Prayer is not just a wish
list to God, or a list of complaints. Nor is it a spiritual exercise that turns a blind
eye to the realities we have to face. No, praying means to engage in conversation
with the Lord about the situation we are in. There are some things that we can be
thankful for, others that worry us. There are people that need our prayer and intercession - amongst them the rulers in society. (V2). Since prayer is not a
monologue, we also listen to what the Lord has to say. His concerns go far beyond ours. He wants more than “that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness.” (V2) He wants all people (ALL!) to be saved and to
come to a knowledge of the truth, to discover full life in Christ. (V3)
The South African Council of Churches has started a campaign worth noting:
“The South Africa we pray for” (more info at sacc.org.za). Behind this is more
than just the realisation that South Africa is in a crisis. It is launched with the
awareness that Christians can play a major role in our times. Just think about it:
the biggest political party has a branch in almost every voting district in South
Africa. The Church of Christ on average has 24 congregations in each of these
districts! Although we belong to a myriad of denominations, we all confess to
one God and one mediator, Jesus Christ. (V5) Imagine now the impact, when we
Christians together discuss the situation with our Lord AND listen to what he
wishes us to do! We do not need to wait for election results to see which party
wins. Jesus Christ HAS won the victory! This is what we celebrated at Easter!

I hope that, together with all Christians in our neighbourhood we can make this
victory known - especially in the way we address the pressing issues of our time.
May the Lord help us to do so!
1. Pastor Dr. Detlev Tönsing was inducted on 31 January 2016 into the
shared post of pastor at St Peters Pretoria and Program Facilitator of ELCSA
(N-T). May he be filled with joy, strength and many creative ideas for this
task!
2. After the ending of his Coll-time Pastor Frank Schütte was elected by
the Augsburg congregation and inducted as their pastor on 14 February 2016.
3. In the same way Pastor Rolf Schmidt was elected by Harburg and
inducted as pastor there on 3 March 2016.
We are grateful that these young pastors have settled in well, and wish them
Gods blessing and many years of serving in his Church.
4. Bishop Horst Müller will be on study leave from 5 May to 2 August
2016 - partly in Germany and partly in South Africa.
5. Talks with the Cape Church: Bishops Gilbert Filter and Horst Müller as
well as their deputies, Felix Meylahn and Theo Jaeckel have met, once also
under guidance of an external consultant, to find ways of how to best lead
this discussion to the benefit of all, especially the congregations.
6. The Combined General Pastors´s convention of both Churches will take
place from 19-23 September 2016 in Red Acres, Pietermaritzburg.
7. On 11 April 2016 a delegation from ELCSA (N-T) Church Council will
meet with the Church Council of FELSISA for further talks. May the Lord
bless this meeting!
8. On 1 May 2016 the ELCSA (N-T) Brass festival takes place in Piet
Retief. May the musicians experience a blessed weekend, and may many
members of our Church make an effort to gather and to share in this
wonderful occasion!

Scientists worldwide are celebrating something truly remarkable. A hundred years
ago, Albert Einstein postulated in his General Theory of Relativity the existence of
gravitational waves rippling across the universe.
But it remained theory. Einstein himself thought we would never have the technology to detect and actually measure these waves.
But the astronomers tried. They persevered over the decades with an instrument consisting of mirrors and lasers, called Ligo.
Then last September—voila!- Ligo in the US picked up the “chirp” of two black
holes colliding in space 1.3 billion light years away, and the resulting gravitational
waves.
The scientists spent months checking their work and have now released a positive
result. We have even heard the chirp and the waves relayed over TV. Einstein was
right. It’s gratifying in an age of debunking to have something so conclusively confirmed.
Einstein had a great hairstyle, better even than Donald Trump. A plain speaker—no
trace whatever of technocratic jargon—he had a gift for the humours epigram:

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure
about the universe.

Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source
of all true art and science.

If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.

Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different
results.

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre
minds.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Reality is merely and illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.

When you are courting a nice girl and hour seems like a second. When you sit
on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That’s relativity.

Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolised.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand.

As the first term of 2016 draws to a close, we have much to be thankful
for. Annemarie Rawlins, Martin Conrads and Laurence Thom all agreed
to stand for Congregational Council. Their induction took place in a wonderful service on 13 March 2016.
The new office bearers in the Congregational Council are as follows:
Chairperson – Almut Buhr; Vice Chair – Simtho Gumede; Treasurer –
Jabu Shange and Secretary – Annemarie Rawlins.
The first of our quarterly breakfasts at NGLC took place on Saturday, 5
March. After a hearty breakfast, we spent a wonderful morning of teaching and fellowship together. Our speaker, Heidi Wit, from the Presbytarian Church led us through the topic “Finding God’s Fingerprints in a
Broken World”. There was lots of interaction between the speaker and the
audience and we left fulfilled and inspired to, not only see God’s fingerprints around us, but also become God’s fingerprint in a broken world –
each in his/her very specific and unique way...
At our next breakfast we will journey through Africa with Bishop Warwick Cole-Edwards as he tells us about his adventures as an evangelist in
Africa. It will take place on Saturday, 23 April and is not be missed, so
diarise it now! You will find further details in this issue of the newsletter.
The confirmands spent a Spirit-filled weekend in Ramsgate where they
discovered what their spiritual gifts were and how these can be used in the
congregation. It is a special group of young people, who are already involved in various ministries in the congregation. The confirmation service
will be held on Sunday, 3 April. Please keep these young people in your
prayers – Ngoni Madziba, Alex Küsel, Tebo Shange, Kate Meier,
Qwinton Knöcklein and Landa Ngcobo.

THE GREATEST
What is the greatest thing in sports. Is it championship? Records? Or
Honours?
To win the game is great. To play the game is greater. But to love the
game is the greatest of all.
A religious leader once asked Jesus about greatness: Which is the great
commandment.
Jesus responded by challenging that leader to love – love God and love
others.
Jesus said “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
your soul and with all your mind.
This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You
shall love your neighbour as yourself.
Whatever else our faith in Christ compels us to do, there is nothing
greater we can do than to show our love –
For love reveals the heart of our holy heavenly Father. After all, “God is
love.”

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives
cheerfully.’” (2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT, second edition)
How do you have the attitude God wants you to have when you give? It starts
with your heart. God is a lot more interested in your willingness to give than your
wealth, because he’s interested in what’s happening in your heart when you
decide to give.
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “ You must each decide in your heart how
much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God
loves a person who gives cheerfully’” (NLT, second edition). This verse talks
specifically about four key heart attitudes you should have when you give.
1. Give thoughtfully. Don’t give impulsively. The most spiritual kind of giving
is when you think about it and pray about it and make up your mind about it.
Why? Because we plan anything that’s important in our lives. God wants your
giving to be important and meaningful in your life.
2. Give enthusiastically. Don’t just say, “ I have to give! If I don’t give God’s
going to hit me with lightning or something.” Give because you know God’s going to do something big in your heart when you become a generous person.
3. Give voluntarily. Any time you’re pressured by a person to give, don’t give.
God’s not going to bless it anyway. But every time you feel challenged by God to
give, you’d better give.
4. Give cheerfully. Give with joy! One of the Greek words for offering is the
word “ hilarious.” God wants you to enjoy giving to him and to others.
Sometimes it’s a challenge to be cheerful when God’s challenging you to give.

Whenever you feel that way, just remind yourself of the benefits of what God
wants to do in our heart. Why be generous? It creates community. It defeats materialism. It strengthens your faith. It’s an investment for eternity. It blesses you
in return. And, it makes you more like God.

Who am I, God: the doubts, the fears,

This is an old book, published in the 1970s, but the topic is
one that never ages and is still relevant today. This is a
woman’s collection of prayers – simple conversations with
God – that touch on the pains, delights, challenges and rewards that every woman experiences. “Success or failures
don’t matter so much anymore. For the only success is to
become a woman whole and fulfilled in the sight of
God. The great light of your love has warmed me, calmed
me, healed the ragged edges, certified my only true
role. Thank you God, for gathering me back to you, making
me whole. In knowing you, I know myself.”

Stürmische Zeiten. Nicht nur bereiten wir uns auf die Kommunalwahlen vor. Es
geschieht ausserdem in einer Zeit der politischen Unruhe, extrem hohen Arbeitslosigkeit,
einer Wirtschaftskrise mit ganz schwachem Rand, einer der schlimmsten Dürren je. Die
Liste ist noch viel länger.
Wie gehen wir als Christen mit dieser Situation um?
Die fromme Antwort lautet: Beten! Die Wirklichkeit sagt: Schimpfen, Klagen, Stöhnen.
Angst, Wut, Verzweiflung, Apathie.
In 1 Timotheus 2,1-7 finde ich eine sehr hilfreiche Aufforderung an die Christen damals.
Ihre Situation war in mancher Hinsicht um einiges schlimmer. Sie waren eine
Minderheit - manchmal geduldet, oft verfolgt.
Sie werden zum Gebet aufgefordert - aber nicht als fromme Pflicht. Es wird genauer
umschrieben: Bitte, Gebet, Fürbitte und Danksagung (Vers1). Diese 4 Worte machen
deutlich, worum es beim Gebet geht. Keine Wunschliste. Kein Klagenkatalog. Kein
blindes Ignorieren aller Probleme. Das Gebet ist viel umfassender. Es ist ein Gespräch
mit Gott über die Situation in der wir uns befinden. An einigen Stellen danken wir ihm
für Gutes. An anderen Stellen klagen wir ihm die Verzweiflung. Wir tun Fürbitte für
diesen und jenen - auch für die Obersten des Landes. (V2)
Weil dieses Beten nicht nur einseitige Rede, sondern ein Gespräch ist, bekomme ich
auch mit, wie der Herr die Dinge sieht. Er gönnt uns ein stilles, ruhiges Leben (V2).
Aber vor Allem möchte er, dass alle Menschen, ALLE!, ihn kennen lernen und das volle
Leben entdecken das in Christus Jesus geschenkt wird.
Der Südafrikanische Kirchenrat hat eine Kampagne gestartet: “The South Africa we pray
for” (Siehe sacc.org.za). Dahinter steht nicht nur die Erkenntnis, das viel schief liegt,
sondern auch die, dass wir Christen in dieser Situation eine bedeutende Rolle spielen
können.
Die größte politische Partei hat in fast jedem Wahlbezirk Südafrikas eine Zweigstelle.
Die Kirche Jesu Christi dagegen ist in jedem Wahlbezirk durchschnittlich mit 24
Gemeinden vertreten! Auch wenn wir den unterschiedlichsten Denominationen
angehören, bekennen wir gemeinsam einen Gott und einen Mittler, Jesus Christus (V 5).
Wenn wir als Christen miteinander den Herrn fragen UND hören, was er uns sagt, kann
Wunderbares passieren. Wir brauchen nicht auf Wahlergebnisse zu warten um zu hören,
wer gewonnen hat. Christus HAT gesiegt. Das haben wir an Ostern gefeiert.
Lasst uns wieder neu mit anderen Christen zusammen seinen Sieg sichtbar werden
lassen, vor allem in der Art und Weise, wie wir mit den gegenwärtigen Krisen umgehen.
Dazu helfe uns Gott!

Nachrichten aus der Kirche
1. Pastor Dr Detlev Tönsing wurde am 31. Januar eingeführt auf eine
halbe Pfarrstelle in St Peters Pretoria und zur anderen Hälfte als Program
Facilitator der ELKSA (N-T). Wir wünschen ihm für diesen Dienst
Freude, Kraft und gute Ideen!
2. Nachdem die Coll-Zeit von Pastor Frank Schütte beendet wurde, hat
die Gemeinde Augsburg ihn gewählt, und er wurde am 14 Februar 2016
dort eingeführt.
3. Ebenso hat die Gemeinde Harburg Pastor Rolf Schmidt gewählt, und
er wurde am 3. März dort eingeführt.
Wir sind dankbar, dass diese jungen Pastoren sich eingearbeitet haben,
und wünschen Gottes Segen für viele Jahre Dienst in der Kirche.
4. Bischof Horst Müller ist vom 5. Mai bis 2. August 2016 im
Studienaufenthalt, teils in Deutschland, teils in Südafrika.
5. Gespräche mit der Kapkirche: die Bischöfe, Gilbert Filter und Horst
Müller und deren Stellvertreter Felix Meylahn und Theo Jäckel, haben
sich getroffen, beim zweiten Mal zusammen mit einem Externen Berater,
um zu beraten, wie die Einheitsgespräche so intensiv wie möglich auch
die Gemeinden mit einbeziehen können.
6. Der Gemeinsame Pfarrkonvent der beiden Kirchen findet vom 19-23.
September 2016 in Red Acres bei Pietermaritzburg statt.
7. Ein Ausschuss der Kirchenleitung trifft sich am 11. April mit der
Kirchenleitung der FELSISA zu weiteren Gesprächen. Möge unser Herr
die Begegnung segnen.
8. Am 1. Mai 2016 feiern wir das Posaunenfest der ELKSA (N-T) in
Piet Retief. Allen Bläsern wünschen wir ein gesegnetes Wochenende.
Vielen Menschen wünschen wir das Glück, dabei zu sein!

Wir danken allen, die uns so liebevoll während der Krankheit und nach
dem Heimgang unserer lieben Carmen unterstützt haben, besonders
Pastor Ron für seine Besuche, tröstenden Worte und praktische Hilfe.
Den Damen, die bei der Trauerfeier halfen und allen, die uns durch ihre
Besuche und Gebete begleiteten und bei der Trauerfeier tröstend mit
dabei waren, sagen wir ganz besonders unseren Dank.

Liebe Gemeinde
Bei meiner Betrachtung möchte ich die Liebe in den Fordergrund stellen.
Die Liebe ist in allen Lebenslagen bei uns Menschen von essentieller
Bedeutung.
Gott, unser allwissender, immer gegenwärtiger u. unendlicher Vater, der
weiser ist als alle menschliche Welt, Du liebst die Menschen auch nach
dem Sündenfall und Deine herrliche Liebe ist für Dich ein Non plus ultra.
Wir haben erkannt und glauben, die Liebe, die Gott zu uns hat.
Gott ist die Liebe und wer in der Liebe bleibt , der bleibt in Gott und Gott
in ihm. (Johannes 4 / 16)
Ein Großvater saß in seinem Sessel. Vor ihm spielte sein kleiner
Enkelsohn, fast noch ein Baby, auf dem Boden. Plötzlich umfasste der
kleine Junge das Bein seines Großvaters und sagte, „ich hab Dich lieb“.
Die Liebe ist auch der positive Effekt unserer Seele. Insbesondere Junge
Menschen in der Sturm- und Drangzeit finden begeistert zusammen und
beteuern „ich hab Dich lieb“!! Die Liebe macht glücklich, ja überglücklich.
Jesus redet von der Liebe. Genauer von einer dreifachen Liebe: Die
Liebe zu Gott, die Liebe zum Nächsten und der Liebe zu sich selbst.
„Die Liebe ist das höchste Gebot“. Die Liebe ist der Kompass für das
Leben. Sie gibt uns eine Richtungsanzeige.
„Welches Gebot ist das erste von allen?“ So hat der Schriftgelehrte
Jesus gefragt. Und Jesus antwortete, indem er aus der hebräischen
Bibel das alte Bekenntnis Israels zitiert. „Höre, Israel, der Herr unser
Gott, ist der einzige Herr. Darum sollst Du den Herrn, Deinen Gott lieben
mit ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele, mit all deinen Gedanken und all
Deiner Kraft“!! (Matthäus 22 /34)
Die Liebe verbindet Gott u. Mensch. Die Liebe verbindet Mensch und
Mensch. Vielleicht noch mehr. Die Liebe ist das Geheimnis des Lebens.
Ohne Liebe wäre alles nichts. Der Apostel Paulus denkt so über die
Liebe. Er schreibt:“und wenn ich prophetisch reden könnte und alle
Geheimnisse wüsste und alle
Erkenntnis hätte, wenn ich alle Glaubenskraft besäße und Berge damit
damit versetzen könnte, hätte aber die Liebe nicht, wäre ich nichts.
Mit Gott und seiner Liebe sind wir alles. Ohne Gott sind wir nichts.
Johann Sebastian Bach vermittelt es uns wunderbar musikalisch: wie gut
es ist, Gott, dem nächsten und mir selbst mit Liebe zu begegnen.
Musik::: Herr durch den Glauben wohn in mir, laß ihn sich immer stärken,
dass er sei fruchtbar für und für und reich an guten Werken. Daß er sei
tätig durch die Lieb. Mit Freuden und Geduld sich üb.. Dem nächsten fort
zu dienen.
So klingt Nächstenliebe bei Johann Sebastian Bach.

Ohne die Liebe wäre alles nichts, weil es die Liebe ist, die Menschen
Kraft gibt. Die Liebe der Eltern macht Kinder stark und Lebenstüchtig.
Wir sehen den Schaden, wenn Kinder keine Liebe erfahren oder ihnen
Schlimmes angetan wird. Die Liebe von Menschen trägt durch schwere
Zeiten und gibt neuen Mut.
Sie hilft, mit Einschränkungen zu leben. Viele Menschen sagen im
Rückblick: Es war nicht allein der Erfolg, das Ansehen, die Karriere, die
mein Leben wirklich erfüllt haben. Es waren die Menschen, die mit mir
das Leben geteilt haben – meine Familie, meine Freunde – Menschen
die für mich da waren und für die ich da war. Und am Ende des Lebens
ist es gut, nicht allein zu sein.
Jesus sagt: die Liebe zu Gott, die Liebe zum Nächsten und die Liebe zu
sich selbst gehören zusammen. Wenn du spürst, wie sehr du Liebe
brauchst, dann spürst Du auch, was andere Menschen brauchen. Und
dann spürst du auch, was Gott will u. was Gott dir schenkt.
Liebe deinen Nächsten wie Dich selbst ! Dein Nächster ist wie du
darauf angewiesen, ihn in Not nicht verhungern , verdursten oder
ertrinken zu lassen. Nächstenliebe ist darauf aus, anderen zu helfen,
dass sie leben können. Sie schließt aus, andere vernichten zu wollen.
Es kann keine Gottesliebe geben, die das Leben von Menschen
verachtet. Alle irren, die meinen, man könne mit Gottesliebe die
Vernichtung von Menschen begründen (Greueltaten der ISIS. Und Bokko
Haram) Das ist der große Irrweg. Auch die Christenheit hat sich auf
diesem Irrweg immer wieder verlaufen (Inquisition, Bartholomäusnacht in
Paris, dreißigjähriger Krieg). Hass und Fanatismus zerreißen die Seele.
Friedrich Schiller schreibt in seinem Gedicht von der Glocke u. a.
„gefährlich ist´s den Leu zu wecken, verderblich ist des Tigers Zahn.
Jedoch der schrecklichste der Schrecken. Das ist der Mensch in seinem
Wahn“..
Gott, der uns in der Bibel bezeugt ist, ist der Gott der Liebe. Gott ruft
nicht zum Hass, sondern zur Liebe, nicht zum Krieg, sondern zum
Frieden. Und am Ende steht nicht der Tod, sondern das Leben. Wir
leben von Gottes Liebe, die uns ins Leben gerufen hat. Sie trägt und hält
uns. Wir leben von der Liebe, die wir einander schenken.
Diese Liebe überwindet Grenzen. Sie macht keinen Halt zwischen
Ländern und Kulturen. Wer liebt, sieht im anderen Menschen nicht den
Fremden, sondern die Schwester, den Bruder – auf Liebe angewiesen
wie ich selbst. Gott schenkt uns die Kraft, dass wir damit beitragen zu
einem guten und friedlichen Miteinander.
Jesus, der die Liebe als das höchste Gebot verkündete, der von Liebe
durchdrungen war und der bei seinen Predigten oft der Liebe einen

besonderen Platz einräumte, durchlebte auf dem Ölberg bei Jerusalem
allerdings seine schlimmsten seelischen Qualen.
Seine Jünger, die er um Beistand bat, schliefen wahrscheinlich aus
Übermüdung ein.
Er war allein und er sah den Kelch, der die Sünden der Welt und
menschliche Verruchtheit enthielt. Er bat Gott: „ Vater, bitte lass diesen
Kelch an mir vorüber ziehen „ Als nichts geschah, begriff er, was er
bereits wusste, Dass sein Vater seinen Opfertod wollte, um die Sünden
der Menschen zu tilgen. Mit der Annahme des Kelches ist Jesus Christus
Sieger über alle Mächte der Finsternis und des Todes. Er ging seinen
Häschern entgegen.
Einen größeren Liebesbeweis Gottes, der seinen geliebten Sohn für die
Tilgung menschlicher Sünden und menschlicher Abgründe opferte, gibt
es nicht.
Und die allgegenwärtige Liebe Gottes, die über uns Menschen strahlt,
bringt Glückseligkeit, bringt Freude, bringt Hoffnung
Wir sind von unserem allmächtigen Gottesvater auserwählt Kinder der
Schöpfung zu sein
