Monatsspruch für April 2012
Jesus Christus spricht: „Geht hinaus in die ganze Welt, und verkündet das
Evangelium allen Geschöpfen“ Markus 16,15.
Das Foto der Blumen auf dem Altar zur Hundertjahrfeier unserer Gemeinde
zeigt es uns recht deutlich: „das Schiff, das sich Gemeinde nennt, fährt
durch das Meer der Zeit“ (EG 572). So ist das Evangelium auch hierher nach
Südafrika gekommen, etwa, als Missionre und Siedler, mit der „Kandaze“
hier landeten. Die offene Blumen-Bibel zeigt uns den Inhalt, die frohe
Botschaft, daß Gottes Liebe allen Menschen gehört und alle die frohe
Botschaft hören sollen: „Der Herr ist auferstanden, er ist wahrhaftig
auferstanden!“ Lasst uns diesen Auftrag unseres Herrn nochmals auch für
unsere Zeit hören, wenn er auch uns in die ganze Welt, zu aller Kreatur
sendet, auch in eine völlig veränderte Welt wie damals oder wie vor 100
Jahren. Er will sicherlich damit auch uns den Auftrag geben, seine
Schöpfung zu erhalten.
So wünsche ich uns allen eine gesegnete Osterzeit mit der am Ostertag aus
dem oben genannten Lied so dringlichen Bitte: „Bleibe bei uns, Herr! Bleibe
bei uns, Herr! denn sonst sind wir allein auf der Fahrt durch das Meer. O
bleibe bei uns, Herr!“

Watchword for April 2012
Jesus Christ says: “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15).
This is an Easter call by the risen Lord. It is part of the second, later, ending of
the Gospel of Mark, very similar to Matthew 28:18-20. He sends his disciples, of
whom it had just been said that they doubted and did not believe (Mark 16:11,
12+14). Jesus sends people who have failed him, disappointed him, who did not
believe in his resurrection, like Thomas, and who denied him, like Peter. Jesus
uses these very sinful, unbelieving, weak people, and sends them to proclaim
the gospel, build his Kingdom, his church. He sends them to be his tools, his
messengers, his mouth and his hands and his feet. And he surely wants to go on
doing this. He wants to keep reaching out - using us today, you and me. Jesus
does not ask us to go, he sends us, he commissions us. He does not say: “Will
you please go...” but he says, “Go into all the world and preach the good news
to all creation”. We have just celebrated the hundredth anniversary of our congregation, two congregations established by the Berlin and Hermannsburg Missions, who together with the Union Lutheran Church, now constitute our congre
-gation. Was it not this calling, to go into the world, which brought many of the
original founders or their forefathers into this country? And is his calling not just
as clear to us, even if we live in very different situation?
God is still calling, he will give us the courage and the conviction to go on and
be his messengers. Let us listen more to his word and less to our own inadequate thoughts and doubts. Let us also understand that Jesus wants us, you and
me, to spread his Gospel with our very different gifts, even if we are not perfect.
He needs you in his church and in our congregation. Let’s find the place where
we can be his witnesses. As congregation we want to help each another to find
that place and to grow in that ministry.
He calls us not merely to one place, but into all the world, preaching the gospel
to all creation. At our Centenary Celebration Helga Schröder showed this with
her flower arrangement on the altar: the open Bible and the congregation as a
ship. With this ship we are to carry the Word of God into the world, to all creation. So let us rediscover this calling for us today!
I wish you a blessed time of Easter! May it awaken in us the spirit of joy, of singing and rejoicing, of praising God, our Father, for giving us new life through the
resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ.

MARTIN PAUL
I, Martin Franz Adolf Paul, was born
on the 18th April 1967 as the son of
Helmut and (late) Hedwig Paul in Greytown, went to school in Harburg and
was confirmed at Harburg Church.
From Std 6 to Std 9 I went to Linpark
High School, then started work at the
Dalton Telephone Exchange. After that
I was on the Fawnleas Telephone Exchange for 8 years. During those years I
married Irma Hinze. We had a child but were later divorced.
At the moment I am working as a blockman at the Hope Meat Supply in
Richmond. I got engaged to LeeAnn Arangie in January 2011. We are staying together in Pietermaritzburg.
I drive the Church Kombi every Sunday to take people to church, and also
for the Confirmands. Martin Paul.
We, the congregation, thank Martin for his faithful service, and LeeAnn for
her support!
Ich, Martin Franz Adolf Paul, wurde am 18.April 1967 als Sohn von Helmut
und (der verstorbenen) Hedwig Paul in Greytown geboren. In Harburg ging
ich zur Schule und wurde in der Harburg Gemeinde konfirmiert. Von Std 6
bis Std 8 war ich in der Linpark Oberschule. Dann fing ich beim Dalton
Postamt in der Telefonabteilung an. Später arbeitete ich 8 Jahre lang in der
Fawnleas Telefonzentrale. Während dieser Zeit heiratete ich Irma Hinze.
Wir bekamen ein Kind, wurden aber später geschieden.
Jetzt bin ich Schlachter beim ‘Hope Meat Supply’ in Richmond. Im Januar
haben LeeAnn Arangie und ich uns verlobt; wir wohnen zusammen in
Pietermaritzburg.
Jeden Sonntag fahre ich den Gemeindekombi um Leute zum Gottesdienst
zu bringen, und auch die Konfirmanden.
Die Gemeinde dankt dir, Paul, für deinen treuen Dienst, und LeeAnn für ihre
Unterstützung!

Council Window
With such a wonderful weekend behind us it is impossible to give a general
report! I can only share my experiences of these last few days.
Starting with the maintenance day on Saturday, 10th March – so many people arrived and what a pleasure it was to see how everybody got stuck in
and worked – a pity nobody had a camera! THANK YOU to all who came.
The musical evening on Friday, 16th March with such wonderful music and
everyone singing full out at the end (we must have a good roof as it would
otherwise have lifted!) was such a magnificent start to our celebration
weekend.
Saturday morning started at 07:00 with the first helpers reporting. Again it
was such a pleasure to have this kind of support from our members! Some
good snapshots would have been of our Pastor slashing away at the weeds
which had not been removed in Bester road. Then later in the evening
Ingrid Bunge and Inge Scriba on their knees, scrubbing the carpet in front of
the altar – someone had come in to admire the flowers with layers of mud
on their shoes!
Sunday – such a wonderful day! So many voices singing their heart out such a wonderful way to praise the Lord and to give thanks!
All this was only possible because so many of you became involved, be it by
sharing your talents with us, by taking up responsibilities or helping somewhere. I cannot mention names! All I can say is that the input by so many
members was something very precious to me. I THANK YOU ALL!

On behalf of my wife and myself, I would like to congratulate and thank
you all for a wonderful and blessed festival. Everything was well planned
and prepared and went smoothly! Thank you for your loving and caring
hospitality. For us the 3 days were an uplifting and enriching experience
and wonderful to meet so many old friends and acquaintances again. May
our merciful God continue to bless you as congregation.

2. Else Huber (früher aus Namibia): Schöner Gottesdienst; gut organisiert. Das Essen schmeckte gut, besonders die Wurst (ihr Mann war Wurstmacher!).
3. Magda Westermeyer, (früher Gemeindeglied in Pine Street): Sie war
dankbar dass sie mitfeiern konnte.
4. Rapson Hove (from Zimbabwe, at KZN University): Very nice service,
well organised, speakers and talks not too drawn out.
5. Ingrid Schlosser (from our congregation): She was happy to attend the
celebration service. Her connection goes back to her grandfather G Hoch:
She was thrilled to discover that when the Pine Street Congregation was
founded, he was one of the original signatories.
6. Lenchen Schmidt (born Tscheuschner, from the Altenheim in Wartburg): Happy to have been present – a well-organised service.
7. Pastor Sabine Denecke (from Hamburg West – Süd Holstein): Die
Gemeinschaft von so vielen verschiedenen Leuten, Gemeinden und
Denominationen – einfach einmalig – das Singen soo schön!
8. Sigrid Dittrich (Darnall, Nordküste): Gut organisiert. Große Vielfalt,
aber nichts wurde in die Länge gezogen.

Betet für uns ...” Kolosser 4,3
Die frühe Kirche ist in Not, die Ausbreitung des Evangeliums bedroht. Der
Missionar sitzt im Gefängnis - zu Unrecht. Alle beten darum, dass er
freigelassen wird, damit die Arbeit wei-tergeht. Da kommt von ihm
Nachricht aus dem Gefängnis: Betet für uns, dass Gott eine Tür auftut für
das Wort! Natürlich will er freigelassen werden. Aber die Zeit im
Gefängnis sieht er nicht als Unterbrechung seines Dienstes - sondern
Fortführung in einer Weise, die er sich nie selber ausgesucht hätte. Er
möchte raus - aber so lange wie er im Gefängnis ist, möchte er auch dort
das Evangelium austragen.

Die Kirchengeschichte zeigt, dass ein wichtiger Teil der Ausbreitung der
Kirche durch gefangene Christen geschah!
Manche Gemeinden gehen durch spannende Zeiten: Finanznot, Mangel
an Mitarbeitern, Vakanzen, schrumpfende Zahlen. Wie ein Gefängnis
wirken diese Dinge manchmal auf uns ein, lähmen, nehmen die Freude am
Dienst, oder bringen ihn sogar zum Stillstand.
Natürlich wollen und sollen wir beten, dass diese Not ein Ende nimmt.
Aber von Kolosser 4 möchte ich noch etwas dazulernen: Herr, öffne auch
in dieser Not eine Tür. Die Arbeit geht nicht erst dann weiter, wenn die
Probleme geklärt sind. Auch in der Not kann und will Christus wirken.
Manchmal ist die Not sogar Gelegenheit zum Neuanfang in ganz anderer
Weise. Ich wünsche uns, dass wir uns durch die Not nicht lähmen lassen.
Selbstverständlich - manches geht nicht, weil Geld oder Mitarbeiter fehlen.
Aber dieses “Gefängnis” bedeutet nicht, dass die Arbeit zum Stillstand
kommt. Ich wünsche uns offene Augen, damit wir erkennen, wenn Gott
Türen öffnet - und Mut, dann auch aufzutreten.

Nachrichten aus der Kirche:
1. Die jetzigen Studenten der VELKSA - Annelise Menne, Adolf van der
Walt, Matome Sadiki und Heidrun Tobler, haben sich alle an
verschiedenen Universitäten in Deutschland zum Studium oder
Zusatzstudium gemeldet. Kein neuer Student hat sich für dieses Jahr
angemeldet. Somit haben wir zum ersten Mal in einem Jahr keine
Studenten in Pietermaritzburg. Gleichzeitig ist die Kirche dabei, neu zu
formulieren, welche Bedingungen Theologiestudenten bis zur
Ordination zu erfüllen haben. Dieses soll der VELKSA Synode im Mai
2012 (Kapstadt) als Vorschlag vorgelegt werden. Diese Synode wird sich
auch schwerpunktmäßig mit der Theologischen Ausbildung befassen.
2. Ende Februar fand die erste Gemeinsame Kirchenleitungssitzung
zwischen Kapkirche und unserer Kirche statt. Jede Kirchenleitung wird
als nächstes für sich überlegen, welche Gemeinsamkeiten wichtig und
sinnvoll sind.
3. Wir gratulieren der Gemeinde Bishopstowe-Pietermaritzburg, die in
ihrer Jubiläumsfeier am 18. März der Gründung der beiden Gemeinden
Bischopstowe (Hermannsburg) und Pietermaritzburg (Berlin) vor 100
Jahren gedachte.
4. Am 13. Mai feiert unsere Kirche Posaunenfest in Kroondal. Hoffentlich
werden sich auch viele “Nicht-Bläser” auf den Weg machen und dieses
Fest mitfeiern!
5. Der Zeitraum dieser Bischofs Post (April-Mai) umfasst bedeutende Feste
der Kirche. Wir gedenken des Leidens und Sterbens Jesu Christi für unsere Schuld. Wir feiern seine Auferstehung und den Sieg über Tod und
Schuld, der auch uns gilt. Pfingsten erinnert uns dann daran, dass wir
als Kirche und Christen nie mehr allein gelassen sind. Mögen diese
Feste und Gottesdienste uns allen zur Ermutigung dienen, damit wir
getrost beten: Herr, öffne uns Türen für dein Wort!

Pray for us ... “ (Col 4,2)
Emergency situation for the young Church - the founding missionary has
been imprisoned, detention without trial. Will this then be the end of the
rapid spread of the gospel of Christ? Everybody is praying that this injustice will come to an end, that he will be released.
His letter arrives, smuggled out of prison. He requests their prayer. Of
course, we are praying! But then comes the surprise. He does not pray for
release. Rather he says: Pray for us that the Lord will open a door for the
proclamation of his word!
In his thinking, prison is not an abrupt halt to his mission work but a new
direction. Never would he have chosen to go to prison. But now he is
there, and so the commission continues - behind prison walls. “Pray that
the Lord will open a door in prison!”
Church history bears testimony to the fact that imprisoned Christians contributed significantly to the rapid spread of early Christianity.
Many of our congregations experience “prison” in a different way. Lack of
finances and co-workers, quarrels, shrinking numbers, vacancies stifle the
congregation. They are like a prison, interrupting the life and growth of
the congregation. We pray: Lord, please help! Help us out of this financial
mess, send us a pastor, make the people willing to become involved.
The lesson that I learn from Colossians 4 is that the work does not only
continue once the problems have been solved, the “prison” is behind us.
Christ is at work even in these prison times. “Lord, open a door, so that,
whilst we are in this difficult situation, your word will spread”.
For Paul prison did not mean “business as usual”, but rather: “business, but
unusual”. I pray that God will open our eyes so that difficult times will not
be an interruption or even a standstill of our calling, but rather lead to a
new and different approach to spread the gospel. May he open our eyes
to see the open door in “prison”, and the courage to act on it!

News from the Church:
1. The current UELCSA students (Anneliese Menne, Adolf van der Walt,
Matome Sadiki and Heidrun Tobler) are each individually continuing their
studies at different universities in Germany. No new students have registered for this year. Thus, for the first time in many years there are no
UELCSA students in Pietermaritzburg. Our Church is currently re-defining
the details of what is required from students who wish to be ordained in
our Church. These will be presented to UELCSA Synod meeting in May
2012 in Cape Town. This synod will extensively deal with theological training.

At the end of February Church Councils of our Church and the Cape
Church had our first combined meeting. As a next step each Church
Council will define how it sees future co-operation.

Congratulations to Bishopstowe-Pietermaritzburg, celebrating the centenary of their founding congregations Bishopstowe (Hermannsburg)
and Pietermaritzburg (Berlin) on 18 March.
4.
Our Church is having it´s bi-annual brass band festival in Kroondal on
13 May. I hope that large numbers, not only musicians, will congregate
and celebrate that day!
5. During April and May this year we celebrate most significant days of
our Church year. We think of the suffering and death of Christ for our sins.
Then we celebrate his resurrection and victory over death and evil, for our
salvation. Pentecost reminds us that we are never left to fend for ourselves, but that the Holy Spirit guides and strengthens us. May all these
festivals encourage us, so that we, like Paul, can pray confidently: Lord,
open doors for your Word!
