Die Produktion unserer Möbel erfolgt durch den Produktionsbetrieb
einer Indonesischen Holzfachschule unter Verwendung
von nachhaltig bewirtschaftetem Holz.

Wir berücksichtigen bei der
Konstruktion und der Oberflächenbehandlung unserer
Möbel die Eigenschaften des
Holzes. So sind sie für eine
lange Lebensdauer gemacht
und gewinnen mit zunehmendem Alter an Charakter.
Holz
Ökologie
Holz ist ein lebendiges,
sich veränderndes Material.
Bei der Fertigung von Massivholzmöbeln sind serielle
Herstellungsverfahren nur
beschränkt anwendbar, denn
jeder Baum ist anders gewachsen, hat seine individuelle Maserung und Farbe.
Jedes einzelne Bauteil wird
entsprechend seiner konstruktiven und ästhetischen
Anforderungen ausgesucht.
Vieles bleibt Handarbeit, jedes Möbelstück ist somit ein
Unikat.
Für alle unsere Möbel
verwenden wir Teakholz.
Teak zählt zu den hochwertigsten
Holzarten.
Besichtigung eines Forstbetriebes
Teak hat eine faszinierende
ästhetische und taktile Anmutung, die es von anderen
Holzarten abhebt: Seine lebendige Textur, seine tiefe
Farbe und seine einzigartige,
geschmeidige Oberfläche sind
im Möbelbau legendär.
Pro­duktion
Gemeinsame Besprechung
in den Werkstätten der PIKA
Teakholz zeichnet sich des
weiteren durch sehr gute Eigenschaften aus: Die hohe
Härte und das gegenüber anderen Hölzern geringe
Schwinden und Verziehen.
Ausserdem besitzt Teak gute
Schutzeigenschaften dank
eines hohen Anteils an ölhaltigem Harz. Diese Merkmale
machen Teak zu einem wertvollen Holz mit einer hohen
Lebensdauer.
Wir beziehen unser Holz von
einem ausgesuchten Forstbetrieb in der nahen Umgebung
unserer Produktionstätte.
Dieser Forstbetrieb unterhält
Teakplantagen, die nach dem
Prinzip der Nachhaltigkeit
bewirtschaftet werden, sodass
sie auch für nachfolgende Generationen von Nutzen sein
werden.
Jeder einzelne Baumstamm,
den wir zur Fertigung unserer
Möbel verwenden, wird
durch eine Fachperson vor
Ort nach strengen Kriterien
beurteilt und ausgewählt.
Lehrbetrieb der PIKA
Wir produzieren unsere Möbel
beim Schreinereibetrieb PIKA
in Indonesien.
PIKA wird auf hohem Niveau von kompetenten Fachkräften geführt und ist mit
einem modernen Maschinenpark ausgestattet.
Die Möbelbeschläge und Untergestelle aus Metall werden
von ATMI2, einer Fachschule
für Maschinenbau in der
Stadt Solo, angefertigt. ATMI
ist nach demselben Modell
wie PIKA organisiert.

Der Rohstoff Holz ist für Indonesien ein wichtiges Exportgut und bedeutet eine
existentielle Lebensgrundlage. Wenn diese Rodungen
nicht gestoppt werden, bewegt sich das Land auf eine
ökologische und ökonomische Katastrophe zu. Nur
eine nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung unter Einbezug der
lokalen Bevölkerung kann
dieser Entwicklung entgegenwirken.

PIKA ist in der Hafenstadt
Semarang auf der Insel Java
beheimatet. Der Betrieb ist
nach einem für indonesische
Verhältnisse einzigartigen
Prinzip aufgebaut: Der Produk­
tionsbetrieb, in welchem auch
die Möbel von INCHfurniture
entstehen, unterhält einen
Lehrbetrieb. Dieser geniesst
in Indonesien ein hohes Ansehen und gehört zu den besten Schulen des Landes. Es
werden jährlich rund 75 Lehrlinge zu Schreinern, Möbelzeichnern und Möbelde­
signern ausgebildet.
In Indonesien befinden sich
Primärregenwälder von enormer Fläche.
Grosse Teile dieser Wälder sind durch
rücksichtslose Rodung
jedoch bereits verschwunden.

organisierter Vortrag
des WWF Indonesien
bei PIKA
Hier sehen wir die Möglichkeit, mit unserem Fachwissen
und unserer Erfahrung als
Produktgestalter einen Beitrag zur Entwicklung der
Schule zu leisten. Mit Vorträgen, Workshops und Projekten zu den Themen Ökologie, Innovation und Design
unterstützen wir die PIKA im
Sinne eines Know-howTransfers. Das Vermitteln
von Wissen verstehen wir als
gegenseitigen Austausch.
Deshalb sind wir der Meinung, dass der beste Schutz
des Tropenwaldes dessen
nachhaltige Nutzung ist.
FSC-zertifiziertes Holz hat
sich bereits in vielen Ländern
bei Produzenten und Konsumenten durchgesetzt.
In Indonesien steckt die FSCZertifizierung noch in den
Anfängen. Es ist uns ein Anliegen, diese Entwicklung zu
unterstützen, indem wir zusammen mit PIKA deren
FSC-Zertifizierung anstreben.
Als Schule kann PIKA eine
Vorbildfunktion wahrnehmen und den Studenten ein
ökologisches Bewusstsein
vermitteln. Wir unterstützen
PIKA dabei, sich als FSC-zertifizierter Verarbeitungsbetrieb etablieren zu können.
Durch Aufklärung, Sensibilisierung und der Vermittlung
von Fachpersonen wollen wir
ein ökologisches Denken in

Das FSC-Label3 hat die nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung
zum Ziel. FSC ist eine Zertifizierungsorganisation für
Waldbewirtschaftungs- und
Holzverarbeitungsbetriebe.
Ihre Mitglieder verpflichten
sich, nach strengen, von sozialen und ökologischen Prinzipien geleiteten Vorschriften
zu arbeiten: Keine Übernutzung des Waldes, kein illegaler Holzeinschlag, Einbezug der einheimischen Bevölkerung und die Förderung
der Artenvielfalt. Unabhängige Kontrollinstanzen gewähren zudem die Einhaltung dieser Regeln.

Furniture
Wood is alive
and a material prone to change.
We always bear in mind the characteristics of wood during the construction and the preparation of the surface finish of our furniture. As a
result, each piece of furniture is made
to last and gains more character as it
ages.
Timber
Serial manufacturing methods can
only be used restrictedly when assembling solid wood furniture, as every
tree grows differently and has its own
colour and grain.
For all our furniture,
we use teak.
Teak is counted among the most
high-grade kinds of wood.
Teak wood excels furthermore in
excellent properties: high hardness
and, compared to other kinds of timber, low shrinkage and warping. Also,
teak features very good protective
properties thanks to a high proportion of oleaginous resin. These characteristics make teak a valuable wood
with high durability.
Production
We obtain our timber from a select
forestry enterprise near to our production site. This enterprise operates
teak plantations according to sustainability standards, so that they will still
be of use to subsequent generations.
Timber is very important as an export
commodity for Indonesia and a vital
resource for life there. If these clearings are not stopped, the country is
heading for an economic and ecological catastrophe. Only a sustainable
forestry that involves the local population can counteract this development. That’s why we believe the best
preservation of tropical rainforest is
its sustainable use.
Every single log used in the manufacture of our furniture is chosen and
assessed by a local specialist according to stringent criteria.

In Indonesia, there are primary

However, large parts of these forests
have already disappeared due
to ruthless clearing.

suit the constructional requirements
and aesthetic demands. Much of the
work must be done by hand, hence
each piece of furniture is unique.

Teak has a striking aesthetic appearance and a fascinating tactile quality
which make it stand out from other
wood types: its lively texture, deep
colour and its uniquely supple surface are legendary in furniture construction.
Ecology
PIKA operates on an advanced level,
is headed by competent specialists
and equipped with modern machinery. The furniture fittings and metal
base parts are fabricated by ATMI2, a
mechanical engineering school in the
town of Solo. ATMI’s organisation is
modelled after PIKA’s.

FSC-certified wood has already
become widely accepted in many
countries by producers and consumers alike. In Indonesia, FSC-certification is still at the early stages. It is a
concern of ours to support this development by aspiring, together with
PIKA, to qualify for the FSC-certification.
In spite of heavy environmental damage, ecology has not yet become an
issue in Indonesia. As a school, PIKA
can act as a role model and put across
ecological awareness to the students.
We would like to support PIKA in its
endeavour to become established as
an FSC-certified production workshop. Ecological thinking can be
rooted in the school curriculum by
experts and specialists raising awareness during education. Thanks to our
commitment, this process is also
being supported by WWF 4 Indonesia
which provides the school with lectures and information material.

Exchange
Educational establishment
of PIKA
1
PIKA is based in the seaport of
Semarang on the island of Java. The
enterprise is structured according to a
principle that is singular in Indonesia:
the production workshop where the
INCHfurniture items are created also
trains apprentices. This firm is held in
high esteem throughout Indonesia
and is among the best schools of the
country. Every year, around 75
apprentices are educated as carpenters, draughtsmen and furniture
designers.
The goal of the FSC 3 label is sustainable forest cultivation. FSC is an
organisation issuing certifications for
forestry and wood-working enterprises and its members commit to
strict regulations and to work according to directives that are based on
social and ecological principles such
as: no excessive forest exploitation,
no illegal felling, involvement of the
local inhabitants and promoting biodiversity. Independent controlling
bodies vouchsafe the compliance to
these standards.
Here, we see the possibility for us to
make a contribution with our specialist skills and experience. We support
PIKA in terms of a know-how transfer through lectures, workshops and
projects in the issues of ecology, innovation and design. We perceive the
imparting of knowledge as a mutual
exchange. Also, there is a vivid exchange and collaboration with the
craftsmen and workshop leaders,
work processes are discussed and refined on-site, and innovative construction and treatment methods are
developed and implemented jointly.
