North County Corvette Club (NCoCC) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1974 by San Diego
Corvette enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy America’s finest sports car. Our sponsor is Bob Stall Chevrolet in
La Mesa, and NCoCC is a member of the National Corvette Museum and the San Diego Car Club Council.
Club members enjoy planned trips, car shows, auto rallies and a host of social and Corvette-related events,
including a Christmas Party, an Annual Awards Dinner, two major NCoCC shows (PLASTIC FANTASTIC
at Seaport Village, and ENDLESS SUMMER at Bob Stall Chevrolet), monthly fun runs, and special trips.
We support local communities in the San Diego County area by participating in special event parades and
high school homecoming events. Our members also devote a lot of time, energy, and resources in
supporting our club charity, the Challenged Athletes Foundation located in Del Mar, CA.
Business meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Well Church located
at 13604 Midland Road in Poway, CA 92064. You are welcome to bring your own food to dine with friends.
There are a variety of restaurants nearby. We always welcome and encourage guests to attend our
meetings and to participate in our club sponsored events.

Membership is open to anyone at least 18 years of age who owns or leases a Corvette. Applicants must
attend two business meetings and participate in one club event before becoming a member. Membership
in NCoCC entitles you to:
A membership card for you and your significant other
Discounts on parts and service at participating dealers (Bob Stall and others)
A club T-shirt
A name tag
A monthly newsletter
Members are expected to attend regular business meetings, maintain current dues, and support the club
by serving on committees and participating in club events.
Initiation fee is $25. Dues are paid in advance: $75 for one year.

Charity News from the Challenged Athletes Foundation – Candi Daher, Club Representative
Catch a Rising Star - Making More People Mobile
CAF’s signature Catch a Rising Star Clinic, the Mobility Clinic for leg amputees, was held on March 9, in Del Mar, CA.
Twenty-three challenged athletes and a dozen prosthetists and physical therapists attended,
learning proper running gait techniques and strengthening exercises to improve running and
mobility from instructors Peter Harsch CP, and Ford Ironman World Championship finisher and
above-knee amputee, Sarah Reinertsen. As usual, the event was highly informative and included
interactive group exercises and run/gait evaluations.
CAF spokespersons Clint Mabry, JP Theberge and U.S. Paralympic Track and Field Team Member
and bilateral above-knee amputee, Katy Sullivan all shared their experiences and gave powerful
demonstrations. However, it was Melody Bach, a four-year-old bilateral above-knee amputee who
stole the show and everyone’s heart. All the participating athletes, injured military personnel and
practitioners left with a greater knowledge of how to achieve higher mobility, and a renewed selfesteem.
President’s Corner – May 2008
Time keeps marching on as we move into May. We had a pretty active and interesting April, and hopefully
we will get even more active going forward. The new meeting location has been receiving nothing but
positive comments. I think that having members able to bring their food to the meeting room really allows
social time with each other. Joyce Bunch even made a cake for the last meeting, which was appreciated.
We had a great run to the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino. The run was led by Bob Brown in coordination
with Tom Valenzia. It was great to see Cathy Valenzia up and about as well. The museum was one of the
best I have seen with most of the WW2 planes in flying condition. Our docent, who started his flying career
with the Dutch Air Force, had amazing stories at each plane, all told with an impish sense of humor. At times
the stories got a little long, but were very interesting. Thank you to Bob and Tom.
Time is coming up quickly for two major events. One is club elections which will take place in June. Please
see your election committee headed up by Bob Brown, to let them know your interest on the ballot, or your
recommendation for someone else. Please do not forget that it is each of you that make the club a success,
so please volunteer for a position. The other key event is Plastic Fantastic. There is only one more meeting
between now and the show. If you have not, please complete your registration and get it to Bob Brown.
Also, please bring your raffle prizes or money donations to the May meeting. Remember, the raffle prize
you provide should be one that you would like to win, as our guests would. Also, the cost is tax deductible
as the money goes to the Challenged Athletes.

PLANES OF FAME RUN TO CHINO ON APRIL 20, 2008

Thanks to Tom and Kathy Valenzia for coming up this great destination. So glad to see Kathy back on her
feet and able to come on this run.
The visit to the museum began with a bite to eat at Flo’s Café. Everyone who attended this run came back
with stories about the great tour provided by Jurrie Van der Woude, a former pilot in the Royal Netherlands
Air Force, & Charles Dimke. These gentlemen were full of anecdotes which made the day quite enjoyable
for all who listened.

Randy and Diane’s Solid-Axle Corvette Run Through the Back Country

Randy Solle led a run for his fellow members of
the So Cal Solid-Axle Corvette Club. He was kind
enough to extend his invitation to C-1 owners
from NCOCC. We traveled along Highway 76
through Julian and on out to the Transportation
Museum in Campo. Although a little warm, the
sights were incredible, and the museum full of
history and interesting facts about old-time
vehicles of the county’s past.

Old Car Emissions Exemption No Longer Threatened in 8 California Counties
Congratulations! The California old car hobby convinced California Senate legislators to amend legislation (S.B. 1549)
that sought repeal of the state’s current emissions test exemption for pre-1976 vehicles registered by new owners in the
San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District. The District includes eight counties in California’s Central Valley.
Under the original bill, after Jan. 1, 2009, new owners seeking to register a pre-1976 vehicle in these eight counties would
have been subject to emissions tests for the life of the vehicle. Under the amendment, the repeal language was removed
and the bill instead now requires the DMV to study the state’s special license plate programs and recommend
improvements.

Cruisin' Grand is held every Friday through September 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Join over 400 pre-1974 American-made hot rods, custom, vintage, classic cars and trucks as they begin the sixmonth Friday night cruise down Grand in Historic Downtown Escondido, just off old historic Hwy. 395 (the
Escondido Boulevard business loop). See one of the best gatherings of classic cars in the country, from worksin-progress to priceless, museum-quality vehicles.
Here are the details for our club’s "Cruisin Grand" event:
*Date: 9 May 2008, Friday.
*Time: 4-9:00 PM
Place: Grand Avenue, between Escondido Blvd. & Orange Avenue. That area isjust west of Escondido Blvd. and
one block east of Center City Parkway.
Directions: From the South take I-15 N exit Center City exit just past North County Fair Shopping Mall. Proceed
North on Center City Pkwy. Turn right on Grand Ave. Go One block and you are at Orange
For those wanting to avoid some of the I-15 traffic leaving Poway, there is Pomerado Road with on- ramp to
I-15 just south of North County Fair exit. From there, it’s Center City Pkwy. exit to Grand Ave.
Robert Genat just released a book on the history of the early Fuel Injection Corvettes. A few of our club members
have their cars in the book. Jim Collins’ 65 Corvette is in the book.

MEMBERS OF THE MONTH
PAT AND DICK KNUTSON
This month’s Members of the Month’s email address, “rcarsndolls,” fits Dick and Pat Knutson perfectly! Dick,
a former Auto Parts Manager and Counterman, loves restoring vintage and classic cars--as well as “tinkering
for Pat.” Pat, a retired Automobile Club of So. California Travel Agent collects and sells antiques, dolls, teddy
bears, toys and more. They both have a booth at the San Marcos Antique Village.
Dick was born and grew up in Jackson, Minnesota. Pat hails from Queens, New York. Dick and Pat met in Las
Vegas when Pat was visiting family. They corresponded for two years before seeing each other again when
Dick proposed. They married in NY, lived in Las Vegas and then in Torrance until September 1975. Dick was
offered a job at Love Chevrolet in Poway, but since Patty didn’t drive at that time, they moved to Escondido
where there was better bus service!

Pat says they never had any children, but they do have a family of two golden retrievers and one long-haired
mini doxie!
Dick always wanted a split window and was finally able to buy one. They bought their first Corvette as a gift to
Dick when he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. One of the first outings they went on was the 2003
Corvette Caravan to Bowling Green and had a fabulous time! They hold this great trip as one of their best
memories made while enjoying their Vettes.
The Knutson’s have enjoyed three generations of Vettes -- C2, C4 and C5. At the moment, they have two
beautiful Corvettes, a Fawn Beige ’63 Split Window and beautiful blue, 2003 C5.
Although Dick and Pat have been members since 2004 and they have not formally held any board positions,
you can find these active NCoCC members at most Business Meetings, Fun Runs and helping with parking and
raffle booths at our Car Shows. Of course, as a Prostate Cancer survivor, Dick can always be found -- with Pat
at his side -- at “Cruisin’ For a Cure,” every September!
