The evidence of history is everywhere with churches and monasteries from the 12th to the 15th centuries and monuments, castles and palaces of more recent centuries. Even more ancient is Stonehenge (3000 B.C.) and the Roman Baths (100 A.D.) in England. For nearly 400 years, Britain was occupied by the Romans but by 420 A.D. the Romans were gone. Saxons from Germany and Holland replaced the Romans.. The Normans under William the Conqueror from France conquered England in 1066. A feudal system lasted until the Black Death plague of the 14th century. The 16th century saw revival of civilization with the Renaissance, world exploration and Shakespeare. Destruction of churches and monasteries in England by Henry the VIII in the 16th century after he broke with the papacy in Rome and the destruction of Irish institutions by the Englishman Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century are depressing impressions. Ireland and Great Britain share similar climate with lots of drizzly rain that results in green countryside. There are many good major roads with extensive use of roundabouts but secondary roads are narrow and often difficult for a tour bus to negotiate. Ireland suffered a potato famine in the mid-19th century that caused widespread starvation and forced more than 1 million Irish to emigrate mostly to America. There had been a population of 8 million before the famine but the current population is now only 4 million. The Irish economy is recovering from the financial collapse but manufacturing has suffered. Waterford crystal is now made in Eastern Europe but not in Waterford Ireland. However, Guinness brewing is successful and there is some new industry such as aquaculture in Galway for raising mussels. The 700 foot Cliffs of Moher on the Atlantic Ocean are awesome to see. We visited Blarney Castle and climbed 120 steep spiral steps to reach the Blarney Stone. Whoever kisses the stone will grow more eloquent. So far we note no change. There are quaint seaports like Dingle and historic seaports like Cobh from which the Titanic made its last port of call in 1912. Dublin is by far the largest city in Ireland with a population of 1 million. Trinity College in Dublin was founded in 1592. It has a major library that includes the Book of Kells from 800 AD that is a hand written Latin transcript of the four Gospels. On a major street in Dublin there is an often photographed statue of buxom Molly Malone with her wagon full of mussels “Alive, Alive-O”. Dublin has many acres of parks and much Georgian architecture from the 18th century. After 2 weeks in Ireland we flew to London. We saw Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey but we also rode the London Eye that is a 450 foot ferris wheel located at the Thames River. It rotates once in 30 minutes and has 30 enclosed egg-shaped capsules in the wheel and each capsule holds 25 people. The views of London from the Eye are outstanding. Eighty miles west of London is ancient Stonehenge. It is 5000 years old with stones as high as 25 feet and weighing 50 tons in a circle about 80 feet in diameter. The stones are aligned with the summer and winter solstice but we don’t know whether this had religious or astronomical significance. Only half of the original stones are now standing. German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 7 In the nearby town of Bath, the Roman Baths built in 65 A.D. fell into disrepair when the Romans left in the 5th century. These baths were excavated in 1878 and now function and are part of the Bath museum. In Wales, abandoned slate quarries are recalled by a National Slate Museum where a lone retiree demonstrates how to split a piece of slate to the thickness of a shingle. We rode a small gauge steam engine driven train through the picturesque Snowdonia region of Wales. York in northern England with a population of over 100,000 has the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe called the York Minster. York has 2 miles of medieval walls that encircle the city. Its railway museum has 60 locomotives including Stevenson’s (1829) rocket, the Japanese bullet train and the Eurostar that connects London with Paris via the Chunnel. The Moors are rolling marshy country-side covered with heather and were seen as we traveled north of York to the North Sea port of Whitby. Nearby are spectacular ruins high on a cliff. Near the Scottish border are the remains of a 73 mile stone wall built by the Romans in the 2nd century by Emperor Hadrian to protect the northern border of the Roman Empire. Much of the wall has been removed over the centuries for other construction. We ended our trip in Edinburgh the capital of Scotland with a population of 500,000. The main street called the “Royal Mile” has the Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood. The Castle goes back to the 12th century. The Palace is the official Scottish residence of the British Monarchy and was built by the Kings of Scotland starting in the year 1500. Edinburgh is very lively with many historic hotels, taverns and points of interest. The Scotch have their own Parliament located in a uniquely modern building and they have significant political autonomy. We left Edinburgh to return home when it was 80 degrees when 60 degrees would have been normal. We ended the tour surprised at how much more we now know about this part of Europe. Clever Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide • Disinfect your countertops and cutting boards • Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day • Mix 1 oz. in 1 quart of water and water your plants. It adds oxygen to the soil and helps roots grow • Use peroxide to clean mirrors. There is no smearing • Add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of white in your laundry to whiten them German-American Social Club of Sarasota - Page 8 Do Deutsch Deutsch lernen lohnt sich Learning German is worth it. German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe. On the one hand, this is because of Germany’s size, which with around 82 million inhabitants is the most populous country in the EU. On the other hand, German is also spoken in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein as well as in Italy’s South Tyrol. In addition, German plays a role as a recognized minority language in Denmark, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Approximately 55 million Europeans speak German as a foreign language. In Hungary, German is increasingly popular with students and is number one among foreign languages. Around the world German is the third most taught foreign language and after English the second most popular in Europe and Japan. Other good reasons to learn German are certainly Germany’s strong economy and its leading position as a major export nation. In particular, German products such as cars and machines as well as food and pharmaceutical products are known throughout the world. Therefore the career opportunities that German companies offer young German-speaking Americans are another reason to learn German. Precisely for these reasons the German Embassy set as its goal with the campaign “Do Deutsch Campus Week” to promote German as a foreign language at American universities. More than 40 partner (German World Education Special) universities across the nation highlight German language and culture. The Officers and Directors hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy Year 2012. 2012. We wish you the best Christmas gifts of all – the love of family, the warmth of home, and memories so good you just can’t stop smiling.
