HOCKEY STILL NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FOR
MITCH BROWN AS CALEDONIA CORVAIRS
ADVANCE TO ROUND 3 OF GOJHL PLAYOFFS
March 21, 2014
Despite the fact that there is still roughly two months to go before
the green flag drops on his 2014 Sprint Car season, Mitch Brown is
still busy chasing the puck and a few remaining opponents
around the rinks in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Mitch and his Junior B Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs captured the
Golden Horseshoe Division Championship of the GOJHL, knocked off
Port Colborne in the first round of the playoffs outscoring the Pirates 38
to 9 in four straight games and eliminated the Thorold Blackhawks
in the second round winning four straight games after losing the
opener in the best of seven series.
As we go to press with this edition of our team newsletter, the
Corvairs are about to begin a best of seven series with
St. Catharines Falcons to determine who will advance to
the GOJHL championship finals.
In addition to capturing their division Championship, the
Corvairs also cleaned up at the Golden Horseshoe Awards
February 24th in St. Catharines. The team won awards in seven
of the 11 categories including player of the year, most
valuable defenceman and best goals against.
Caledonia forwards Cody Brown and Connor Murphy were double
award winners. Brown won the awards for the conference’s most
valuable player and most regular season goals while Murphy won
player of the year and most regular season points.
What makes Murphy’s achievements stand out is the fact he’s only 17.
“The player of the year award isn’t just for your performance on
the ice but it combines school and volunteer experience,” said
Corvairs’ head coach Mike Bullard. “At just 17, he’s a class act.”
He said the two awards that stuck out the most were the ones
celebrating defensive achievements.
Kyler Nixon (12 goals, 70 assists in 49 games) was awarded for the league’s
most valuable defenceman and the Corvairs were given the award for
best goals against — averaging just over two goals allowed per game.
“It shows the dedication the guys put in defensively. We had a stellar
year,” Bullard said adding Nixon’s was the night’s only unanimous decision.
Every team nominates one player for each category.

EDITOR'S COMMENTS
HOCKEY STILL NUMBER ONE PRIORITY...
Well, as you have already noticed by our cover
page, this issue isn't just about Sprint Car Racing.
Caledonia’s other award was for first place in the
conference — an accomplishment that didn’t come without
controversy. The St. Catharines Falcons looked to have that award
locked up until Monday afternoon when the Ontario Hockey
Association ruled they dressed too many imports in two of their
games. The Falcons dropped to second place after the adjustment.
It's also about a very exciting form of hockey that
surprisingly doesn't attract a lot of attention by the
local media and in far too many areas doesn't attract
the fan base that it rightfully deserves.
Junior B Hockey, particularly the kind produced by the Greater
Ontario Junior Hockey League, is perhaps one of the most
undervalued commodities in amateur sports anywhere in this province.
If you are a hockey fan, you are definitely missing some fast, exciting
entertainment if you haven't attended a game at this level of
competition. So be sure to take in a game or two before this season
is over. See http://www.gojhl.ca/view/gojhl for game locations.

ON THE RACING SCENE
Although the racing calendars for many tracks and series in our
area don't get underway until the mid-April to late May period,
some lucky competitors have already gotten a head start to their
seasons by heading to the sunny climes of Florida, Arizona or Nevada
to dust the cobwebs off last season's race cars or break in some of the
new equipment they've assembled over this extended winter.
Among those who headed south to Florida's East Bay Raceway Park
in February were Ohsweken Speedway regulars Glenn Styres, Todd
Hoddick of Cheektowaga, NY and Dain Naida of Tecumseh, MI.
Bullard called Brown the “best player in the league,” saying his
awards were well-deserved. The Falcons dropped to second place
after the adjustment.
See: caledoniacorvairshockey.pointstreaksites.com
for upcoming Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs games.
For Mitch Brown, the 2013-2014 season
represents his last season of eligibility
at the Junior level of hockey in Ontario
and he'd like to end it on a high note
by helping his teammates capture the
Sutherland Cup - emblematic of the
Junior B Championship in Ontario

Lady Luck certainly wasn't on the side of these local favourites who
made some strong runs but failed to make the big show.
Other Canadians competing in the Ronald Lany Memorial at the at
the Tampa area speedway include Tom and Lou Kennedy from
Winnipeg, MB and Etienne Girard of Drummondville, PQ.
Girard finished 14th in the final event to crown the "King of the
360s" with Tom Kennedy finishing 16th and Lou Kennedy coming
home in 20th.
Wayne Johnson of Knoxville, IA - a driver who runs a number of major
events for Miles Hill -car owner of Ohsweken regulars Jamie
Collard and Dain Naida- won the event for the second time on
four years. (See report on page 5).
Congratulations to Steve Poirier of St. Mathieu de Beloeil, PQ for
being ranked sixth in the 2013 North American 360 Sprint Car Poll.
Jared Zimbardi, Little Valley, NY, and Justin Barger, Montrose, NY
(regulars on the Patriot Sprint Tour) were ranked 20th and 21st
respectively.

Tony Stewart: SPRINT CAR SAFETY
REACTION RECALLS NASCAR
Nate Ryan, USA TODAY Sports February 18, 2014
'Smoke' compares new safety measures for sprint cars to spate of
changes in NASCAR after Dale Earnhardt's death
A safety revolution is occurring in sprint cars after a brutal season in
which Tony Stewart seriously was injured and crashes killed Josh
Burton, Jason Leffler and Kramer Williamson.
It seems eerily familiar to Stewart, who witnessed a slew of
advancements in NASCAR after Tony Roper, Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin
Jr. and Dale Earnhardt died over 10 months from 2000-01.
"It's exactly the same," Stewart told USA TODAY Sports. "The good
thing is, at least from my side, I get to see benefits from it. I get to see
how it may keep someone else from having to go through the same
thing.
"The hard part is Jason, Kramer and Josh don't get to see that. Dale
Sr. didn't get to see that. That's the part that sucks. If that stuff would
have been in place and mandatory before now, then maybe we
wouldn't be talking about them being gone."
Stewart said three new sets of safety tethers have been introduced
and two driveshaft torque tubes were developed since the spate of
sprint car accidents. The three-time Sprint Cup champion's right leg
was broken in two places because the tube flopped around during his
accident at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
"Three people passed and then I got hurt," he said. "You don't
normally lose four people in sprint car racing in a year; that's not even
remotely common, so that gets everybody's attention."
NASCAR mandated the HANS device (which helps stabilize the head
and neck) and redesigned its cars with more protection for the driver
(with energy-absorbing foam and cushioned cockpits) after the loss of
Earnhardt, who was killed 13 years ago Tuesday in a last-lap crash in
the Daytona 500. Tracks also were mandated to add SAFER barriers,
the "soft wall" technology that reduced crash impacts and made its
debut in 2002 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (whose staff helped
with designs).
"It's progressively got better, and it's a much safer sport than it's ever
been," Stewart said. "Next year, it'll be safer than it is this year. But it
seems like a lot of times, it goes in steps.
"NASCAR has done an awesome job since 2001. We're worried about
making race cars go faster, but it's a great feeling knowing there are
people who don't give a crap how fast that thing goes. They're
figuring out how to make it safer to do what we love to do, so we
don't have to worry about it."
But though a proponent of safety research, Stewart said there always
will be limits to its efficacy, and that racing deaths are saddening but
not surprising.
"There are no surprises when you know it can happen," he said. "It's
racing. Is driving or riding in a street car 100% safe? Billions do that
every day. People don't say, 'Well, I'm not going to drive my street
car, it's too dangerous.' But there might be some jackass texting on
their phone, or someone at the bar all afternoon, or someone turns
the wrong way and changes our life. So if that's not too dangerous to
do, then why is this?
"It's not downplaying it. It's just being realistic."
Michigan Driver to Run FAST Series in 2014
Exciting competitor also plans to run a few events at
Ohsweken Speedway where schedule permits
Dain Naida of Tecumseh, MI will spend more of his summer racing
closer to home in 2014.
The hard charging driver who enjoyed running the outer rim of Ohsweken
Speedway as a regular in the track's Corr Pak 360 Sprint Car Division over the
past two season in the Miles Hill-owned #07 made the announcement
following his February 24th return from the 37th Annual East Bay
Winternationals held Feb 10-16th at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL .
His plans for the upcoming season includes a steady diet of competition at
Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway in Ohio running 410 Sprints.
In a TJSlideways.com Podcasts interview Naida stated both tracks
offer less travel time ( in the two hour range) and no border
crossing hassles for the Michigan competitor who spend upwards
of five hours competing every night at Ohsweken Naida. He did
add, however, that given off nights in the Attica-Fremont schedules
he will likely compete at Ohsweken possibly once a month or more.
WAYNE JOHNSON HOLDS OFF ABREU TO CLAIM $10,000 IN THE 13TH ANNUAL
RONALD LANEY MEMORIAL AT EAST BAY RACEWAY PARK
TAMPA, FL . February 23, 2014
Wayne Johnson had his Charlie Fisher powered- XXX chassis
dialed in to perfection and his driving skills were never sharper
than Saturday night when he started on pole and left his
competition, mainly young Rico Abreu, searching for 40 laps
for a way around the Knoxville, Iowa resident.
The occasion was the l3th Annual Ronald Laney Memorial at
East Bay Raceway Park where Johnson put an exclamation
point to the 38th Winternationals standing in victory lane with
his $10,000 check and wearing the crown for being “King of
the 360’s” for the second time in four years. His repeat win in
the race was an emotional time for Johnson, because he
counted Ronald as a good friend for many years and misses
him a lot.
“Even though the track was different tonight from last night
when I won, we made very few changes to the car and the
only trouble I had was on the last restart when my tire was
going down and I had to keep the heat in it to build up the
pressure. My crew Daryl Turfurd and Conner Nelson had the
car really nice and Scott Billish is back on board as a sponsor
after being away for four years. Brad Benic builds Momentum
Shocks while Russell Swartz proved the ‘Outlaw Wings’ that
we run are not junk!”
He also acknowledged his other sponsors Miles Hill, Todd
Carlisle, Ray Williams and Vern Rengen.
With Johnson and Bryan Sebetto in the front row and Abreu
inside Parker Price-Miller in the next row and a pair of Danny’s
Wood and Lasoski making up row three, the red flag halted
everything on lap two when Lou Kennedy got upside down on
the back stretch, but was able to walk away from his car.
Abreu was in hot pursuit trying inside and outside moves to
get by Johnson when they came upon lapped traffic on lap
eight, but when the leader chose the high groove to maneuver
through, so did Abreu. By the half-way mark, the front twosome had put three lapped cars between themselves and third
place runner Price-Miller. Seven laps later that margin
increased to four lapped cars when the yellow came out for a
blown engine on Danny Martin’s machine in turn four.
Abreu from Rutherford California making his first appearance
at East Bay, driving the Abreu Vineyards ART chassis that was
built in a small shop in Sacramento and having Paul Silva
aboard as a chief mechanic was a serious threat the entire
race, but especially on the last restart on lap 33 when Johnson
noticed his loss of tire pressure. Rico explained it like this, "I
tried to drag race him into turn one and I had my wing back
pretty far.” His Shaver powered machine pulled inside
Johnson, but the leader was relentless in his pursue of this win
and mustered ahead by the time the two were half-way
between turns one and two.
Abreu didn’t give up and according to him, “I like East Bay, it’s
a lot like some of the tracks in California.” He wanted to give
special recognition to Jeanie and Bryan Butler for their special
help with helmets, safety equipment and seats. Abreu gained
early driving experience spending four years in Outlaw GoKarts and now has four years in sprint cars. Tonight he had to
settle for second behind Johnson who led by 0.624 seconds at
the finish.
Eleventh starting Terry McCarl came on late to finish third and
admitted in his interview that this was the best track in Florida
because it had a top, a middle and a bottom groove. His Singer
powered ART chassis is sponsored by Morgan Strawberry
Farms and Randy Bernette. He thanked his wife Lori for
putting up with three drivers in the family.
Jason Sides finished fourth followed by David Gravel,
Christopher Bell, Jac Haudenschild, Greg Hodnett, Danny Smith
and Danny Lasoski in the top ten. Heats were won by Sides,
Smith, McCarl, Lou Kennedy, Hodnett and Tom Kennedy.

ABREU SWEEPS LUCAS OIL ASCS COCOPAH CUP
CHALLENGE II FEATURE EVENTS COCOPAH SPEEDWAY
March 2, 2014 9:44 pm BY RANDY HOEFT @YumaSunSports
Christopher Bell, says Rico Abreu, is one of his best friends.
In fact, they are such good friends, Abreu says “he’s the guy I can call
up at 3 in the morning and he’ll come pick me up on the other side of
the country.”
But don’t expect Abreu to return the favour on the race track.
On Saturday night, Abreu caught his friend in the closing laps of the
Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American
Real, Cocopah Cup Challenge II feature event, drove past him when
Bell touched the wall in Turn 1, and collected the $10,000 paycheck.
“I just didn’t get the job done those last five laps,” said the 18-yearold Bell, who is the defending Honda USAC National Midget Dirt
champion. “I kept running in a little high into (Turn 1) and ended up
pushing the nose into the fence.
“I just have to say hats off to my crew, they did an awesome job
working the rain and stuff, and we got an awesome racetrack.”
In the racing program’s under-card event, Lakeside’s Mike Harlan
pulled off an Abreu-like sweep, winning the Friday and Saturday
night feature events in the Cocopah Speedway Racing Series Street
Stock Division.
“The track just got so finesse there at the end, it was just right
around the wall and it was really demanding on the cushion,” said
Abreu. “He (Bell) just made that one mistake, and I was right there.”
It marked the first time Harlan had been on the track since the end
of the 2013 season when he won the division driving championship.
The win was Abreu’s second straight in the Cocopah Cup Challenge II
after the 22-year-old driver from St. Helena, Calif., drove off with his
first career win in the ASCS national tour on Friday night.
His absence so far in 2014 was by design, he said from victory lane.
He described the race to the 2013 championship as a stressful
ordeal, which he didn’t want to go through again this season, even if
it meant not defending his title.
Saturday’s win came after a two-hour delay when rain started falling
after the sprint cars had completed their hot lap sessions on the
Somerton oval.
Greg Burgess, Cocopah Speedway’s director of operations, consulted
with his staff and ASCS staff, watched the weather radar, and chose
to wait out the storm.
Abreu was happy with the decision to wait and not cancel the show.
“I really wanted to get this night in, so I’m glad they sat it out,” he
said afterward. “Tonight the track was awesome. For what they had
to work with, it was nice and wide and it really played out in our
favour. They did an awesome job, and they kept their fans, and that’s
what great race tracks do. Good promoters make good decisions.”
“When the whole group is so tight, tight knit, we’re all friends and we
hang out outside the racing scene, you’d think that we’re such good
friends that it wouldn’t matter, but it’s just the opposite,” said Lerwill.
“We’re such good friends that if you get into a guy or something, it’s
offensive, and tempers flare. And that’s what happened last season,
and it just wasn’t a good thing and I wanted to leave it at that. So I
took myself out of the equation by missing two races.”
GLENN STYRES GETS EARLY START TO 2014 SEASON BY
HEADING SOUTH
Abreu started Saturday night’s feature event in the No. 3 spot on the
grid and stalked Bell, the pole sitter, for 26 laps, with both drivers
weaving through lapped traffic after Lap 7.
Following some disappointing runs in the 37th Annual East Bay
Winternationals held Feb 10-16th at East Bay Raceway Park in
Tampa, FL, Ohsweken Speedway owner/driver Glenn Styres headed
west to Arizona to compete in the February 28th-March 1st Lucas
Oil ASCS Cocopah Cup Challenge where his performance improved.
“I just raced my own race and when I got to traffic I was just sliding
guys, you know really grinding my tires,” said Abreu. “It was tough
driving by those lappers when they were running side-by-side but
other than that, (crew chief) Paul Silva gave me a great race car.”
On opening night of the two-night event he finished 4th in his heat
and ran to a 19th place finish in the 25-lap A-Main. In the Saturday
night special he finished 2nd in his heat and earned a 15th place
run in the 30-lap main event.
