NEW 'COMPANION EVENTS
EXTRAVAGANZA' RECOGNIZING
TOP DOGS IN AGILITY, OBEDIENCE AND
AKC RALLY DEBUTS IN 2013
AKC Communications Release, May 4, 2012
New York, NY - Beginning in 2013, the American Kennel Club® will celebrate the top dogs in
AKC Companion Events with the "Companion
Events Extravaganza," a multi-day event that will
feature Championship events for Obedience and
Agility and a new national competition for AKC
Rally.
On March 15-17, 2013 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the
National Obedience Championship (formerly
known as the National Obedience Invitational) will
move from its usual calendar date in December to
run in conjunction with the National Agility Championship. A new AKC Rally National Competition
will be held on the Friday of that weekend. After
2013, the combined "Extravaganza" will rotate to
different locations around the country.
"Thanks to the vision of retired Companion
Events AVP Curt Curtis and his staff, this new
'Companion Events Extravaganza' will allow us to
showcase the best competitors in the country, rotate venues and teach responsible dog ownership
to the public through demonstrations, seminars
and other companion dog related activities," said
Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Companion and
Performance Events.
The 2012 National Obedience Invitational and
National Juniors Obedience Competition will be
held as usual in conjunction with the AKC/
Eukanuba National Championship this December
in Orlando, Florida.
Beginning in December 2013, a new obedience
competition - the AKC Obedience Classic - will be
held in conjunction with the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship and AKC Agility Invitational in
Orlando. The new competition will crown the top
dogs for the year in the Novice, Open and Utility
classes. The National Juniors Obedience Competition will continue to be held with these events in

"DOGS' GAZE FOLLOWING IS TUNED
TO HUMAN COMMUNICATIVE SIGNALS"
by Ernő Téglás, Anna Gergely, Krisztina Kupán, Ádám
Miklósi, József Topál,
Dogs were shown a video of an actor standing between
two identical objects. When the actor said, “Hi dog,” in
a high pitch and made eye contact, the dog was more
likely to follow actor's gaze toward an object than when
actor said, "Hi dog," in a low pitch and made no eye
contact before gazing at an object.
Hmm . . . equivalent to our visual/verbal cue
before signaling the directed jumping exercise?
ODTC Agility Proposal Withdrawn
It is with regret that VP, Maggie Eslinger, has withdrawn the ODTC agility proposal. Due to unforeseen health issues, Maggie will be unable to fulfill
her commitments to an ODTC agility program
moving forward in the near future. We understand that many were excited about the prospect
of ODTC holding indoor agility classes, and we
hope to consider this project again in the future.
Thank you.

Hi Maggie & ODTC Members,
I want to thank you and the club for inviting me to
judge your trials last month. Sorry it's taken so long to
send this, but things have been hectic with Don's
medical problems. I am happy to say he is much,
much better. I had a wonderful time seeing everyone
and judging the Recall class was a lot of fun.
See you again in the future.

Dear Maggie & ODTC Members,
I am so glad you asked me to judge! I had absolutely
the BEST time! My stewards were awesome (Thank
you, Kathy and Paul). . . . The exhibitors were great. .
. . And everyone was so helpful!!! The Rally Ring ran
as smoothly as it could possibly go! And what's more,
we all had a lot of fun! Please pass on my thanks to all
the ODTC club members.
Sincerely,

Dear Maggie & ODTC Members,
Thank you for asking me to judge obedience at your
trials 4/14 &15/12. Congratulations on two successful
trials your entries were very good. My Stewards were
all wonderful on Saturday Norma Loepp, Joan Epple
& Ruth Hangartner and on Sunday Bill & Donna
McCombs and Victoria Orna (Victoria had never stewarded before and she did a very nice job). Please
thank them all for me. The dinner at Fishbones was
very good. You spoiled us. Once again, thanks for
asking me to judge. I had a very nice weekend.
Love,
Carol Ann Klein

UPDATED VET GUIDELINES FOR DOG
& CAT ANESTHESIA
At the end of last year, The American
Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)
released its updated guidelines for
dog/cat anesthesia for veterinarians.
To better understand what to expect
should your pet require anesthesia
you might want to check out the recommended protocol. It includes recommendations for patient anesthetic
plans, client communication, the use

of pre-anesthesia and pain management drugs,
management of anesthesia patients who have
significant chronic disease, and recovery management.

Anesthesia_Guidelines_for_Dogs_and_Cats.pdf
In her blog, Veterinarian, Dr. Karen Becker also
suggests a visit to an animal chiropractor as part
of your pet's recovery plan after any anesthesiarequiring procedure because the moving of your
pet's limp body from a gurney to the surgery table and then to the recovery area, and the jerky
movements that occur while pets are coming out
of anesthesia may stress your pet's skeletal
health.

PET CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Fifty percent of dogs aged 10 years or older develop cancer at some point during their lives. To
help dog owners better understand the treatment
options, cutting-edge research and ways to support canine cancer research, the AKC Canine
Health Foundation (CHF) has launched a public
awareness and fundraising campaign to kick off
Pet Cancer Awareness Month, May 1-31, 2012.
The public awareness and fundraising campaign
runs through the month of May and uses social
media and online outreach, podcasts and website
features to promote not only CHF-funded research, but information on different
types of canine cancer, care for dogs
with cancer and other cancer-related
health resources.

Feedback on our Crate Games Class . . .
Hi Sharon & Reggie,
I wanted to tell you what a BIG help it has
been to me that RAZZ does not bark or object to
being in a crate anymore; in fact, sometimes he
doesn’t want to come out! I have been able to put
him in his crate while I train my other dog and he
is content. Every so often I give him a couple
really terrific treats for being such a good boy.
Also able to crate him when company comes in
and there is no barking or fussing. Quite amazing.
Thank you both for being such patient and
good instructors for the Crate Games class at
ODTC. Razz and I both enjoyed it.

NEW PET T RICKS CLAS S
Teaching tricks is a positive method of training
skills and focus - it improves the bond between
human and canine.
Based on the "Do More With Your Dog" trick
training program, handlers will work toward the
Novice Trick Dog Title.
This will be an on-going class where handlers
and dogs can continue to work on their trick skills
and earn intermediate and advanced trick titles.
Bobbie Kurival and Deb Wood are Associate

ODTC Members,
This is a reminder that you need to sign up on the volunteer worker sheet at each event (and sometimes each phase of an event i.e. set up, take down, stewarding are three phases) to make sure your
work for the event is recorded. It is your responsibility to remember to sign up so that you get the credit
you need toward your end of year pins & bars submission, etc. When we print a “Thank You” or worker
list in Waggs your name should be on it. If it’s not let the chairperson of the event know so it will be
corrected.
Many hands make light work so we thank you for volunteering
and making Orlando Dog Training Club great!
CAN YOU HELP OUT A FRIEND?

JACK DID IT!!!
Jacket Up A Notch CD BN RN CGC
It has been a long time coming. Jack and I entered our first
Novice A class on Sunday, August 3, 2008 under Jerry Iermiero
at the Indian River Dog Training Club. We NQ'd. All my fault
for entering him too early in his career. So I let another 2 years
pass before we entered again.
This time under J.B. Stephens at the Sarasota Obedience
Training Club. This time we were much better, although we
NQ'd again. This handler had to work on our time outside the
ring, getting herself and Jack calmed down, before entering
again. Our time in Novice competition was improving even
more with our run in DOCOF as part of the ODTC team. We
"Q'd" with a 192. I took that as an indication that we were
getting close to victory.
Enter 2012, and we entered and traveled to St. Pete in
February to compete again. Under Ken Kincaid, we qualified
both days gaining 4th Place on Saturday with a 182.5 and on
Sunday, achieving 2nd Place with a 188.5, while having a runoff for 1st. Lesson learned - always be prepared for a run-off!
Only ONE more leg remaining for our CD. I wanted it to be at
our club!
Saturday, April 14, was not our time. We NQ'd again.
Really through no fault of Jack’s. For me to be on top of our
game, I have to be well rested. Note to self...sleep well the night before a competition. I will feel rested and be
more confident and so will Jack. Point taken. So enter Sunday under Michelle Swiat, and Jack did it! We Q'd for
our 3rd leg and Companion Dog title with 2nd Place and a respectable 187.5 score! It took 3 years and 8
months to do it! Now on to Graduate Novice!
Sincerely,
Brenda J. Noren
