available, both in the Bay
of Alcúdia area and in the
rest of Mallorca, are truly
endless throughout every season
of the year. Which is why, ever
since we started BAHÍA magazine,
we have tried to keep our readers
informed not only of recreational
activities typical of the summer
months (beaches, water sports, etc.),
but also to reveal interesting proposals for the rest of the year.
This time, as well as offering
you a description of the wonderful
beaches in the north of the island,
we would like to tell you about
our bicycle touring routes, the Lluc
monastery, the most representative archaeological sites, a route
around the island’s ancient castles,
the history of rice from S’Albufera,
and to bring two figures from
our history closer to you - Ramón
LLull and Joan Mascaró – as well as
spelling out the vision of three artists from north Mallorca, amongst
other stories and reports we hope
will be of interest to you.

as opciones de entretenimiento, tanto en la zona
de la Bahía de Alcúdia
como en el resto de Mallorca, son interminables durante
todas las épocas del año. De ahí que,
desde que iniciamos la andadura
de la revista BAHÍA, nos hayamos
propuesto dar a conocer a nuestros
lectores no sólo las actividades lúdicas propias de los meses de verano
(playas, deportes acuáticos, etc.),
sino también desvelarles interesantes
propuestas para el resto del año.
En esta ocasión, además de
ofrecerle una descripción de las
maravillosas playas de la zona norte,
deseamos descubrirle nuestras rutas
cicloturistas, el monasterio de Lluc,
los yacimientos arqueológicos más
representativos, una ruta por los
castillos centenarios de la isla, la
historia del arroz de l’Albufera,
acercarle a dos personajes de nuestra historia como son Ramón LLull y
Joan Mascaró, y darle a conocer la
visión de tres artistas del norte, entre otras historias y reportajes que
esperamos sean de su interés.

In Alcúdia, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort, there is a total of 17 beaches
with huge sandy areas, crystalline waters and rocky areas perfect for diving
and other water-based activities.

de arenales inmensos, aguas cristalinas, zonas de roca ideales para el

Different coves oriented towards the Bay of Pollença which are an invitation to relax. Can Cap de
Bou is one of the places most admired by enthusiasts
of sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Es Comú, Playa de Muro
This is the most natural area of
Playa de Muro and one of the most
pristine beaches on the island. It has
a dune system with juniper trees
that form part of the Albufera.

Some of the small houses along this stretch of Playa de Muro
used to belong to the priests or capellans of the parish of Muro.
Nowadays the area is fashionable for its restaurants serving
paella and other dishes made on the beachfront.

Algunas de las casetas de este tramo de Playa de Muro pertenecían a los sacerdotes o capellans de la parroquia de Muro. A

In einigen der Häuschen in diesem Abschnitt des Playa de Muro
lebten früher die Kaplane (capellans) der Kirchengemeinde Muro.
Heute ist der Strand sehr beliebt, nicht zuletzt wegen der Paellas
und anderer Gerichte, die am Strand zubereitet werden.

the highlight is the mountainous scenery in the background, as well as its crystalline waters, fine sand
and an old round watchtower.

zona protegida como Área Natural de Especial Interés por su diversidad floral y su fauna.

from the torrent that drains into
the sea here, forming a wetland
that is a resting place for migratory birds.

Este pequeño arenal toma el nombre del torrente que desemboca allí

long stretches of sand on
which to stroll along the
seashore. A highly recommendable
practice early or late in the day,
when the beaches are practically
deserted and you can really enjoy
this healthy activity. Like this, you
can practise moving meditation in
incomparable natural surroundings.
But for motionless meditation,
we recommend Cala Poncet, Platja
de Sant Joan, Sant Pere, Son
Bauló or Es Comú de Muro at sunrise or sunset, the best moment
for connecting to oneself according to zen masters.
To take refuge and make contact with nature, what could be
better than Albufera. This space
is ideal for practising tai chi or
yoga postures in absolute silence,
breathing in pure air.
The hotels also have pools
with sea views where you can
relax looking at the horizon, and
some beaches in the north also
have wellness stations run by
authorised professionals, where
you can enjoy an unbeatable
massage on the seashore.

anto Alcúdia como Playa
de Muro y Can Picafort disponen de arenales largos
para dar paseos a la orilla
del mar. Una práctica muy recomendable a primera o última hora del día,
cuando las playas están casi desiertas
para disfrutar de esta saludable actividad. De esta manera se puede practicar la meditación en movimiento en
un entorno natural incomparable.
Si bien, para meditar en quietud,
recomendamos cualquiera de las
pequeñas calas como Cala Poncet, la
Platja de Sant Joan, la de Sant Pere
o Son Bauló o Es Comú de Muro, al
amanecer o al atardecer, ya que para
los maestros zen es el mejor momento
para conectar con uno mismo.
Para refugiarse y estar en
contacto con la naturaleza, nada
mejor que la Albufera. Este espacio
es ideal para practicar posturas de
yoga o tai chi en pleno silencio y
respirando aire puro.
También los hoteles cuentan con
piscinas con vistas al mar donde
relajarse mirando al horizonte, y
algunas playas de la zona norte
tienen también puntos de wellness
de profesionales autorizados, con
los que disfrutar de un masaje sin
igual a la orilla del mar.

laya de Muro, an over
5.2-kilometre-long stretch
of sand, holds the award for
excellence in the breaking
of architectural barriers and attention
for people with disabilities, given by
ADEAC (the environmental and consumer education association), and has
been declared a totally accessible beach.
It has a total of 23 accesses (streets)
leading to the beachfront. The majority
of these easy, signposted access routes
also have car parks for people with
disabilities, walkways for reaching the
seashore, watchtowers, lifeguards and
police, as well as first-aid modules.
Architectural barriers have been reduced by lowering pavements, ramps,
adapted bathrooms and adapted
showers and footbaths. The resort
facilities (bars, restaurants) are accessible, and on all the beaches, next to
the walkways there are free sunbeds
and sunshades for disabled people.
To make it easier for people with
some kind of disability to bathe,
there are also amphibian chairs,
walkers, sunbeds, crutches, life
jackets and safety wristbands. Playa
de Muro Sector I even has a bathing
channel for sightless people.
The rest of the beaches in the north
of Mallorca, in the Alcúdia and Can Picafort areas, are also accessible for people
with some kind of physical disability.

La mayoría de estos accesos fáciles y
señalizados también tienen parking
para personas con discapacidad,
pasarelas para llegar a la orilla del
mar, torres de vigilancia, socorristas y
módulo de primeros auxilios.
Las barreras arquitectónicas han
sido reducidas a través de los rebajes
de acera, las rampas, baños adaptados, así como duchas y lava pies adaptados. También los balnearios (bares,
restaurantes) son accesibles, y en
todas las playas junto a las pasarelas
hay hamacas y sombrillas gratuitas
para personas con discapacidad.
Para facilitar el baño de las
personas que tengan algún tipo de
discapacidad también disponen de
sillas anfibias, caminadores, hamacas,
muletas, chalecos salvavidas y pulseras de seguridad. Incluso la Playa de
Muro Sector I cuenta con un canal de
baño para personas invidentes.
El resto de playas del norte de
Mallorca, de las zonas de Alcúdia y
Can Picafort, son también accesibles
para personas con algún tipo de
discapacidad física.

Bordsteinkanten sowie den Aufbau

Fußduschen beseitigt. Strandbars
und Restaurants sind ebenfalls mit
behindertengerechten Zugängen
ausgestattet. Überall am Strand
gibt es in unmittelbarer Nähe der
Laufstege kostenlose Sonnenliegen
und Schirme für Behinderte.
Auch im Meer können gehbehinderte Menschen mithilfe von Rollatoren, Wasserrollstühlen und -liegen,
Krücken, Schwimmwesten und
Sicherheitsarmbändern sorgenfrei
baden. Im ersten Abschnitt (Sector
I) verfügt der Playa de Muro sogar
über einen abgetrenneten Badebereich für blinde Menschen.
Auch die anderen Strände zwischen Alcúdia und Can Picafort im
Inselnorden sind behindertengerecht ausgestattet.

he Blue Pathway is an
award given to different municipalities to
acknowledge their work
on improving and restoring their
natural heritage. Blue pathways
are supposed to be a space for
enjoying nature and should ensure
the safety, access and recreation of
those who visit them. In addition,
they are supported by the Biodiversity Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the
Environment as part of the goal to
promote sustainable coastal areas.
The Can Picafort Blue Pathway is
the only one on the Balearic Islands
and is known as Camí de Sa Marina
de Son Real, and it runs from Can
Picafort to Son Serra de Marina,
passing by the Son Real Necropolis, Illa des Porros, pine groves and
areas with dunes, caves and birdwatching points.

Marina). A 6 kilómetros del pueblo, tras una sinuosa carretera, se
encuentra esta cala con zona para
de amarre. Cuenta con unas hermosas vistas y vegetación submarina muy interesante.
PUERTO DE CALA FIGUERA (Santanyí). Este rinconcito al suroeste
tiene forma de “y” y cuenta con
varios calós muy bonitos, como el
Caló d’en Busques o Cala d’en Boira y sus antiguas casas de pescadores, varaderos y llaüts.

esta aldea de pescadores se percibe
la tranquilidad observando a los
pescadores remendando las redes

rmita de la Victoria is a
historical place that attracts many visitors, most
of whom are hikers hoping
to enjoy the magnificent views it
affords of the Bay of Pollença. This
emblematic place of worship, which
dates back to the year 1400, has
housed hermits since 1679, and in it
the image of the Virgin of La Victoria
is worshipped, a 15th-century polychrome piece. Nowadays, as well as
the hermitage proper there is a small
hotel with a restaurant next to it.
The most famous excursion is the
one leaving from Alcúdia, about 4
km away, which runs through the
Nature Area of La Victòria and along
Camí Vell, and passes by the heavenly
beaches of S’Illot and Cabo Pinar,
until reaching the peak where this
beautiful hermitage sits.

century, the Lluc Sanctuary
is the first Marian Christian church of the Balearic
Islands. Originally it was a place of
pilgrimage for penitents, who would
walk up the mountain holding a
rosary until entering the oratory
on their knees, or barefoot, to kiss
the Holy Figure in honour of whom
they left a candle or ordered a mass.
Nowadays it is an attractive place
both for believers and for laypeople,
as it offers visitors plenty of opportunities for seclusion and leisure.
Probably one of the most wellknown symbols of the place is the
blauets. One local custom is to go and
listen to the characteristic singing of
this choir of forty children, the roots
of which lie in the 13th century. The
whole island has heard of their performances during Holy Week and the
Christmas Matines, with Chant of the
Sibil·la, recognised as World Heritage
by UNESCO since 2010.
Anyone who visits the Lluc Sanctuary will be able to enjoy the views of

Seguramente uno de sus símbolos
más reconocidos son los blauets. Es
costumbre del lugar ir a escuchar el
característico canto de este coro de
cuarenta niños cuyas raíces radican
en el siglo XIII. Asimismo, son reconocidas en toda la isla sus intervenciones
durante la Semana Santa y las Matines de Navidad, cuando es interpretado el Canto de la Sibil·la, reconocido
como Patrimonio de la Humanidad
por la UNESCO desde 2010.
Quienes se acerquen hasta el
Santuario de Lluc podrán disfrutar de
las vistas de la Serra de Tramuntana
y visitar su precioso jardín botánico,
pues Lluc continua haciendo honor
a su significación, “bosque sagrado”
(lucus). Además, el Santuario goza de
un museo, restaurantes de gastronomía mallorquina y habitaciones que
invitan al descanso en la Hostatgeria,
en concreto 81 dormitorios y 39 apartamentos con cocina, todos ellos con

as im XIII Jahrhundert
eingeweihte Sanktuarium zu Lluc war der erste
Marientempel der Balearen. Anfangs pilgerten die Büßer
zu Fuß hierher, den Rosenkranz
in den Händen. Auf Knien oder
barfuß gelangten sie zur Kapelle,
um die Marienstatue zu küssen,
zündeten ihr zu Ehren eine Kerze
an oder hielten Messen ab. Heute
ist das Sanktuarium ein attraktives
Ausflugsziel, sowohl für Gläubige
als auch für Atheisten, schließlich stellt Lluc nicht nur einen Ort
innerer Andacht dar, sondern ist
auch ein Freizeitangebot.
Auf ganz Mallorca bekannt ist der
40-köpfige Knabenchor von Lluc, die
blauets, dessen Ursprünge ebenfalls
auf das XIII Jahrhundert datieren.
Seither ist es Brauch, zum Kloster zu
pilgern, um dem erhabenen Chorgesang zu lauschen, der inselweit
während der Osterwoche und der
Christmetten, wenn der Gesang der
Sybille aufgeführt wird, ertönt. Der
Gesang der Sybille wurde 2010 zum
UNESCO-Kulturerbe deklariert.
Wer zum Sanktuarium Lluc pilgert
kann nicht nur atemberaubende
Ausblicke auf das Tramuntana-Gebirge
genießen, sondern auch den bezau-
bernden botanischen Garten besuchen,
mit dem Lluc seinem Namen „Heiliger Wald“ (lucus) alle Ehre macht.
Im Kloster gibt es ein Museum und
ein Restaurant mit mallorquinischen
Gerichten. Übernachten kann man in
einem der 81 Zimmer oder 39 Appartements mit Küche in der Herberge Hostatgeria. Zimmer und Appartements
verfügen über Bad, TV und Heizung.
Das Sanktuarium zu Lluc hat

The two most important reservoirs on the island
are Cúber and Gorg Blau. Both of them are
nestled high up in the mountains, and supply our
island with water.

aim of collecting rainwater to supply the city of Palma.
They stand out for their scenic
beauty, as they are located in the
natural area of Serra de Tramuntana, specifically in Escorca.
Anyone wishing to spend a weekend in the mountains can choose
one of the two shelters located by
each reservoir, which were fishermen’s lodgings until 1978, to have
a rest before going on one of the
many excursions the area offers,
such as the Biniaraix gulley, Puig del
Tossals Verds and Camí Vell de Lluc.

even fish in the freshwater lakes.

can also warm up by the fireplace
and eat sitting at the table under the light which runs on solar
panels. And for the brave amongst
you, there is the Gorg Blau shelter which sleeps eight and has no
electricity. Both are adapted so
that people with reduced mobility
can rest here, and have an outside
toilet and adapted stove.
Furthermore, nights spent at
these reservoirs are an invitation
to look towards the sky, as researchers of the UFO phenomenon
are frequent visitors here, due to
the high number of sightings in
this part of the island.

ya que se encuentran en el paraje
natural de la Serra de Tramuntana,
concretamente, en Escorca.
Quienes deseen pasar un fin de
semana entre montañas, pueden
escoger entre uno de los dos refugios
situados en cada embalse, antiguos
alojamientos de pescadores desde
1978, para descansar antes de realizar
una de las tantas excursiones que permiten el lugar, como son el barranco
de Biniaraix, el Puig del Tossals Verds
y el Camí Vell de Lluc. Además, si se
goza de autorización, está permitido
pescar en sus dulces aguas.
Si ya está pensando en una experiencia magnífica en “los lagos de
Mallorca”, le hablamos de sus consagrados refugios; el refugio de Cúber
ofrece espacio para el descanso de
seis personas con sus respectivos sacos
de dormir, pudiéndose calentar con la
chimenea y comer sentados a la mesa
bajo la luz obtenida de placas solares.
Por otro lado, los más valientes tienen
el refugio del Gorg Blau sin electricidad y para ocho personas. Ambos
alojamientos cuentan con adaptaciones para que descansen personas con
movilidad reducida, así como un aseo
fuera y un fogón adaptado.
Por otro lado, las noches en estos
embalses invitan a mirar hacia el
cielo, pues es frecuente la visita de
investigadores del fenómeno OVNI,
debido al gran número de avistamientos en esta zona de la isla.

Stadt Palma zu gewährleisten. Die Stauseen liegen in der Nähe des Dörfchens
Escorca, mitten im Tramuntana-Gebirge
in atemberaubender Natur. Wer ein Wochenende in den Bergen verbringen will,
kann in den einer der beiden Hütten an
den Stauseen übernachten. Die Hütten
dienten seit 1978 als Schlafgelegenheit
für Fischer. Hier kann man ausruhen, bevor man eine der zahlreichen Wanderungen durch die Umgebung unternimmt,
wie durch die Schlucht von Biniaraix,
den Aufstieg auf den Berg Tossals
Verds oder eine Wanderung auf der alten Straße nach Lluc (Camí Vell de Lluc).
Mit der entsprechenden Genehmigung
darf man sogar im Süßwasser der Stauseen angeln. Eine Übernachtung in den
begehrten Hütten verspricht das Erleben magischer Momente an den beiden
„Seen von Mallorca“. In der Hütte am
Cúber können sechs Personen in Schlafsäcken übernachten. Wärme spendet der
Kamin der Hütte und man isst im Schein
der über dem Tisch hängenden Lampe,
deren Strom mit Solarpanelen erzeugt
wird. Für Mutige ist die Hütte am Gorg
Blau zu empfehlen, wo acht Personen Platz finden. Hier gibt es jedoch
keinen Strom. Beide Hütten können
auch von gehbehinderten Menschen
genutzt werden und bieten Außentoilette und behindertengerechte Herde.
Wer in den Hütten übernachtet, sollte
unbedingt einen Blick in den Himmel
werfen. In dem Gebiet wurden schon
viele UFO’s gesichtet, weshalb auch
zahlreiche UFO-Forscher die Stauseen
immer wieder aufsuchen.

as it enables one to observe birds in any
season of the year.

his area has over 200 different species of common
and ubiquitous birds like
sparrows or common wood
pigeons, but there are also other
rarer, more localised species, such as
the great bittern or the flamingo.
Because of the large stretch of
coastline, there are many seabirds,
most notably Kentish plovers or
Audouin’s gulls with their spectacular flight. Further inland, with
the help of binoculars, we can see
the gannet, with a wingspan of
nearly two metres.
In the wetland areas of Albufera
and Albufereta there is a wide
diversity of species of different
colours. Ducks, herons, western
marsh harriers, western swamphens, water rails... And many others who share the lagoons.
Although there are no high mountains in this area, one can observe
forest birds like booted eagles, peregrine falcons and crows, as well as
other smaller species such as European goldfinches, chaffinches, European greenfinches, nightingales, red
crossbills, western Orphean warblers
and other migratory birds.
The farming areas contain the
birds that have a greater capacity for
camouflage. These are the skylarks,

currucas y otras aves migratorias.
En las zonas agrícolas se mueven
las aves con más capacidad para
camuflarse. Estas son las alondras,
las cogujadas y terreras, que pasan
normalmente desapercibidas a nuestros ojos por lo que el observador
deberá armarse de paciencia.

In den beiden Feuchtgebieten

zahlreiche, farbenfrohe Vogelarten
in den Lagunen, wie Enten, Reiher,
Jungadler, Rohrweihen, Purpurhühner oder Wasserrallen.
Auch wenn es in dem Gebiet
keine hohen Berge gibt, bietet der
Inselnorden Lebensraum für kleine
und große Waldvögel, wie Zwergadler, Wanderfalken und Raben sowie
Stieglitze, Buchfinken, Grünfinken,
Nachtigallen, Kreuzschnäbel, Grasmücken und andere Zugvögel.
In der Umgebung der Agrarflächen
leben Vögel, die sich besser tarnen
können, z.B. Lerchen, Haubenlerchen
und Kurzzehenlerchen. Um diese
Arten zu beobachten, braucht man
gutes Sehvermögen und viel Geduld.

years ago, Son Serra, in
Muro, is an archaeological ensemble comprised
of two square talaiots, which were
typical of the prehistoric culture of
Mallorca. Even today, we still do
not know for sure what their function was, which is why there is much
speculation and theorising on the
ritual meaning of these constructions.
Near Ses Cases de Son Serra there are
other constructions, which are undated as yet, but researchers intend
to continue investigating to find out
everything they can about Son Serra.
The 395 hectares occupied by Son
Real contain traces of the Pre-talayotic, Talayotic, Roman, Islamic and Medieval periods. These remains make up a
large part of Mallorca’s archaeological
heritage, thanks above all to the two
prehistoric necropolises, S’Illot de’s
Porros and Punta des Fenicis, in the
Pre-talayotic village of Es Figueral.
The Roman town of Pol·lentia, in
Alcúdia, dates back to the year 123
BC. The excavated part is small in size,
but Pol·lentia occupies a large area
of terrain, and was discovered after
excavations in the 17th century during
which coins and the marble sculpture
of the bust of the Veiled Augustus
were found. Today one can visit “la
portella”, the former residential area,
“el fòrum”, the town square and “el
teatre”, which was built directly on
the rock, taking advantage of the
sloping ground. The site also has a
museum and interesting activities
related to archaeology.

en Muro, es un conjunto
arqueológico formado por
dos talaiots cuadrados, típicos de esta
cultura prehistórica de Mallorca. Aún
hoy no se sabe a ciencia cierta cuál era
su función, y por ello se especula y teoriza mucho sobre el sentido ritual de
estas construcciones. Cerca de Ses Cases
de Son Serra hay otras construcciones
de las que de momento se desconoce
la cronología, pero la intención de los
investigadores es seguir indagando
para conocer todo acerca de Son Serra.
Las 395 hectáreas que ocupa Son
Real recogen las huellas de las épocas
pretalayótica, talayótica, romana,
islámica y medieval. Estos restos suponen una parte muy importante del
patrimonio arqueológico de Mallorca,
sobre todo gracias a las dos necrópolis prehistóricas, S’Illot de’s Porros
y la Punta des Fenicis, en el poblado
pretalayótico de Es Figueral.
La ciudad romana de Pol·lentia en
Alcúdia data del año 123 a.C. La parte
excavada es de pequeñas dimensiones
pero Pol·lentia ocupa mucho terreno
y fue descubierta tras una excavaciones en el siglo XVII en las que se encontraron monedas y la escultura de
mármol de la cabeza de August Velat.
Actualmente se pueden visitar “la
portella”, la antigua área residencial,
“el fòrum”, la plaza de la ciudad o “el
teatre”, que fue construido directamente en la roca aprovechando el
desnivel. El conjunto también cuenta
con un museo y actividades interesantes entorno a la arqueología.

Ses Cases de Son Serra finden sich
andere Bauten, deren Alter noch nicht
bestimmt werden konnte. Die Forscher
arbeiten weiter daran, alles Wissenswerte über Son Serra zutage zu fördern.
Auf dem 395 Hektar großen
Landgut Son Real finden sich Spuren
aus prätalayotischer, talayotischer,
römischer, islamischer und mittelalterlicher Epoche. Die Fundstücke sind
ein bedeutender Teil des historischen

URO BULLRING, “LA
MONUMENTAL”. Construction on La Monumental began in 1910 at
the behest of Jaume Serra Palou, a
bullfighting enthusiast who decided
to turn one of his sandstone quarries into a bullring. The location of
its rooms in the subsoil is striking, as
are its aesthetics, imitating the corral of traditional houses.
ALCÚDIA BULLRING. Located
in one of the bastions of the city
wall, specifically in the Baluarte de
Sant Ferran, constructed during the
first half of the 16th century. It was
inaugurated in 1892.
COLISEO BALEAR (PALMA). This
is the only bullring in the Balearic
capital, and as a result it is a historical
heritage site. Inaugurated in 1929,
it was designed by Jose Tous i Ferrer
and the architect Gaspar Bennazar. It
has four galleries and in it over 11,000
people can enjoy a show.
LA MACARENA, FELANITX. This festive space dates back to 1875, when
a corral was prepared in the cloister
of a former convent as a venue for
different events. It was inaugurated
as a bullring proper in 1891, but its
current appearance is due to the
renovation work carried out in 1914.
It acquired the name of “La Macarena” in 1960, when it became the
property of Federico Molina.
INCA BULLRING. This bullring
was inaugurated in 1910, in what
was a great event that brought the
railway to a standstill due to the
huge influx of people who wanted
to enjoy the show. In 2010, on its
centenary, it was renovated and
now has a box adapted for persons
with reduced mobility.
Recently, more and more municipalities of Mallorca have been declaring themselves against bullfighting,
so some of these bullrings are no
longer venues for bullfights, but one
can enjoy different celebrations in
them, such as music concerts, correfocs and sports trials.

LAZA DE MURO, “LA
MONUMENTAL”. Su construcción empezó en 1910
por deseo de Jaume Serra
Palou, un aficionado a la tauromaquia que decidió convertir una de sus
canteras de marés en una plaza de
toros. Llama la atención la situación

y su estética a imitación del corral de

PLAZA DE ALCÚDIA. Esta plaza se
sitúa dentro de uno de los baluartes de la muralla, en concreto en el
Baluarte de Sant Ferran, construido
en la primera mitad del siglo XVI. Fue
inaugurada en 1892.
COLISEO BALEAR (PALMA). Es la
única plaza de toros de la capital
balear, y por ello es patrimonio histórico. Inaugurada en 1929, fue ideada
por Jose Tous i Ferrer y el arquitecto
Gaspar Bennazar. Consta de cuatro
palcos y permite que disfruten del
espectáculo más de 11.000 personas.
LA MACARENA DE FELANITX. Este
espacio festivo data de 1875, cuando se preparó en el claustro de un
exconvento un corral para celebrar
diversos acontecimientos. Es propiamente inaugurada como una plaza
de toros en 1891, pero la apariencia
actual se debe a la reforma que sufrió
en 1914. Adquiere el nombre de “La
Macarena” en 1960, cuando pasa a
ser propiedad de Federico Molina.
PLAZA DE INCA. Esta plaza de
toros fue inaugurada en 1910, siendo
entonces un gran acontecimiento que

LAZA DE MURO, “LA MONUMENTAL”. Der Bau der
Arena begann 1910 auf
Wunsch von Jaume Serra
Palou, der ein großer Verfechter der
Stierkampfkunst war und einen seiner
Marés-Steinbrüche in eine Arena um-
wandeln wollte. Hervorzuheben sind
die unterirdischen Räumlichkeiten
sowie die ästhetische Imitation der
Innenhöfe der traditionellen Häuser.
PLAZA DE ALCÚDIA. Die 1892 eröffnete Arena befindet sich im Schutzwall Baluarte de Sant Ferran der alten
Stadtmauer, der in der ersten Hälfte
des XVI Jahrhunderts errichtet wurde.
COLISEO BALEAR (PALMA). Die einzige Stierkampfarena der Hauptstadt
der Balearen gehört zum Kulturerbe
der Stadt. Die 1929 eröffnete Arena
wurde von Jose Tous i Ferrer und
dem Architekten Gaspar Bennazar
entworfen. Die Arena verfügt über
vier Logen und bietet mehr als 11.000
Zuschauern Platz.
LA MACARENA DE FELANITX. Die
Festarena besteht seit 1875. Damals
wurde der Innenhof des ehemaligen Konvents für verschiedene
Veranstaltungen hergerichtet. Erst
1891 wurde sie als Stierkampfarena
eröffnet, 1914 dann in die heutige
Form umgebaut. Den Namen “La
Macarena” bekam die Arena allerdings erst 1960, als sie von Federico
Molina erworben wurde.
PLAZA DE INCA. Die Eröffnung
der Arena 1910 war ein Riesenereignis. Zu dem Spektakel kamen derart
viele Zuschauer, dass der Zugverkehr
kollabierte. Anlässlich des 100. Jahrestages ihres Bestehens wurde die
Stuierkampfarena 2010 modernisiert;
unter anderem gibt es jetzt eine Tribüne für gehbehinderte Personen.
Derzeit verbieten immer mehr
Gemeinden den Stierkampf auf
ihrem Territorium. Die Arenen sind
nun nicht mehr Schauplatz der
Stierkämpfe, sondern immer öfter
Gastgeber diverser Events, wie Konzerte, Feuerläufe oder sportliche
Wettkämpfe.

amon Llull (Mallorca, 1232-1316) was a theologian, philosopher, novelist and poet who
travelled the world disseminating his pacifist ideology. He was a member of the court
of Jaime I, The Conqueror, and he married and had two
children, but at the age of 31 he decided to devote
himself to mystic life after the Crucified Christ appeared to him five times. He therefore left his family
and his wealth behind him and focused on the task
of converting infidels, especially Muslims and Jews,
and he did so on the basis of three acts: preaching,
writing about the errors of infidels, and the creation of monastery-schools to teach Arabic and other
oriental languages in order to instruct missionaries.
During his many travels, he visited Africa, where
legend has it that he was stoned to death, becoming
a martyr of the faith at the age of 83 or 84.
Ramon Llull is the author of 265 works in Catalan,
Latin and Arabic, including, Blanquerna and El Libro de
las Bestias. Many people all over the world today follow his ideology and linguistic style.

amon Llull (Mallorca, 1232-1316) fue un
teólogo, filósofo, novelista y poeta que
viajó por todo el mundo difundiendo su
ideología pacifista. Formó parte de la corte
de Jaime I El Conquistador, se casó y tuvo dos hijos,
pero con 31 años decidió dedicarse a la vida mística tras aparecérsele cinco veces Cristo Crucificado.
Así pues, dejando atrás su familia y sus riquezas, se
centró en la tarea de convertir infieles, especialmente
musulmanes y judíos, y lo hizo a partir de tres actos: la
predicación, la escritura de los errores de los infieles
y la creación de escuelas-monasterios para aprender
árabe y otras lenguas orientales con el fin de instruir
misioneros. Entre sus muchos viajes, visitó África,
donde cuenta la leyenda que murió lapidado convirtiéndose en mártir de la fe a los 83 ó 84 años.

31 Jahren, nachdem ihm Christus am Kreuz fünf Mal
erschienen war, entschied er sich für ein Leben als
Mystiker. Er ließ Familie und Reichtum hinter sich und
widmete sich fortan der Bekehrung der Ungläubigen,
vor allem der Moslems und Juden. Die Bekehrung fand
auf drei Ebenen statt, die Predigten, die schriftliche
Niederlegung der Fehler der Ungläubigen und die
Errichtung von Schulen umfasste, an denen Arabisch
und andere Sprachen des Orients gelehrt und Missionare unterwiesen wurden. Bei seinen Reisen besuchte
er auch Afrika. Die Legende besagt, dass er im Alter
von 83 oder 84 Jahren auf dem schwarzen Kontinent
gesteinigt wurde und den Märtyrertod starb.
Ramon Llull verfasste 265 Werke auf Katalanisch,
Lateinisch und Arabisch, u.a. Blanquerna o El Libro de
las Bestias (Blanquerna oder das Buch der Bestien). Der
Gelehrte hat heute weltweit viele Anhänger, die seine

translators of oriental texts in the world.

Joan Mascaró was the son
of an illiterate peasant
family. Thanks to his son,
he was enrolled in a school in Palma,
whilst his parents emigrated in search
of work opportunities.
In 1915, he met the entrepreneur
Joan March Ordinas, for whom he
worked as a German interpreter. At
this point Joan March decided that
the young man should become his
son’s tutor whilst he
studied at Cambridge
University, where Mascaró registered as well.
Here he studied English
and oriental languages in
greater depth.
In 1930, he became
director of studies at the
Parameshvara school in
Sri Lanka. And after translating other texts such as
the Upanishads, Lamps
of fire and Keats, in 1962
he published the full
translation into English
of Baghavad Gita, a book
of spiritual texts from
India, through the British
publisher Penguin Books,
and managed to sell millions of copies all over the
world. By then he was so
held in such high regard
in England that even
George Harrison, one of
The Beatles, considered
him to be a guru.
As an old man, he
tried to return to the
village of his birth, Santa
Margalida, to recover the
house he had been born
in, but the owners at the
time did not want to sell
it to him. Despite this,
his remains lie in this village in the north of the
island. His tomb bears
the inscription: “We
come from God, we live
in God, we go to God”.

Cambridge, donde también se matricula Joan Mascaró. Allí profundiza en sus

En 1930 se convierte en director de
estudios en inglés del colegio Parameshvara en Sri Lanka. Y tras traducir otros
textos como los Upanishads, Lamps
of fire y a Keats, es en 1962 cuando
publica la traducción completa al inglés
del Baghavad Gita, un libro de textos
espirituales de la India, con la editorial
británica Penguin Books y consigue
vender millones de ejemplares en todo
el mundo. En ese momento, es tan respetado en Inglaterra que hasta George
Harrison, miembro de The Beatles le
considera como un gurú.
Ya de anciano, trató de volver a su

ASTELL DE SANTUERI
(Felanitx). On top of
Puig de Santueri stands
this castle from where
one could sight disembarkations in
Porto Colom. The way the wall is
integrated perfectly into the mountain cliffs is quite surprising.
CASTELL DE CAPDEPERA. From this
castle in the north-west of the island,
one can see the village of Capdepera,
the coast and the channel that separates Mallorca from Menorca. The
most famous medieval market on the
island takes place around it.
CASTELL DE ALARÓ. A simple walk
takes you up to the top of Puig de
Alaró, where just the wall and five
towers remain. From the castle, at
an altitude of 800 metres, one can
see the entire island, from the Bay of
Palma to the Bay of Alcúdia.

Felipe III mandó construir este castillo en
el siglo XVII para proteger la Bahía de

was constructed in the 19th century
by the Spanish military man known
as Marqués de La Romana, and is an
example of Neo-Gothic construction
located in the municipality of Calvià.

divisa el pueblo de Capdepera, la
costa y el canal que separa Mallorca de Menorca. En sus alrededores
tiene lugar el mercadillo medieval
más famoso de la isla.
CASTELL DE ALARÓ. Una excursión
sencilla lleva a la cima del Puig de
Alaró donde sólo sobreviven la muralla y cinco torres. Desde el castillo,
a 800 metros de altitud se divisa
toda la isla, desde la Bahía de Palma
a la Bahía de Alcúdia.

Rice from the Albufera

The Albufera wetland, in the north of the island,
is where the bombita rice featured in typical
Mallorcan dishes was cultivated for the first time.
En el humedal de la Albufera, en el norte de la
isla, se cultivó por primera vez el arroz bombita,
protagonista de los típicos platos mallorquines.
Im Feuchtgebiet La Albufera im Norden der Insel
wurde zum ersten Mal die Reissorte Bombita
angebaut, die für viele mallorquinische Gerichte
verwendet wird.

just wouldn’t be the same
without this variety that
was brought to Mallorca
by the Industrial Agricultural Society
of Valencia in the early 20th century.
Although the first few years of production did not yield much due to
floods and low market prices, in the
1950s the families
from Valencia
who stayed in
Mallorca continued to work hard,
alongside the
farmers of Muro
and Sa Pobla, to
carry on producing the Albufera
rice. Even so,
production gradually dropped until
in the 1970s, of
the previous 140
quartons of land,
just 40 remained.
Nowadays, very
few families in
the area produce
rice to try and
preserve these indigenous varieties
such as arroz bomba, bombita, panxa
blanca, bell-lloc, solana and balilla.
U
n buen plato de arròs

la Sociedad Agrícola Industrial de
Valencia a principios del siglo XX. A

que había hasta entonces, solamente quedaron 40. Actualmente, muy
pocas familias de la zona se dedican

autóctonas como son el arroz bomba,
el bombita, el panxa blanca, el belllloc, el solana y el balilla.

ROM MARCH TO JUNE:
Dentex. The name of this
white fish comes from its
large teeth. It is prepared
simply so as to appreciate the intensity of its flavour.
FROM MARCH TO AUGUST:
Red Scorpionfish. Red in colour,
this high-quality fish lives in rocky
areas and is one of the most soughtafter species by Mallorcan fishermen.
The best time to catch it is at night.
FROM MAY TO AUGUST:
Red Mullet. An emblematic fish of
the Mediterranean Sea, with a characteristic orangey-red colour. The most
traditional recipe involves frying the
fish after coating it in flour.
FROM JUNE TO SEPTEMBER:
Lesser-spotted dogfish. The roe of
this fish with feline eyes is known as
“siren’s bags”, because of their shape
resembling an elongated capsule.
In Mallorca it is frequently used for
vegetable cocas with gató.
Smooth-hound. A protected species that can only be fished in the
Mitjorn reservation. When sun-dried,
this fish is the main ingredient of the
farmhouse salad of Formentera.
John Dory. Its backbone resembles
a cockerel’s crest and the circles on
its back are associated to the coin
Saint Peter found in a fish’s mouth.
Mallorcan-style John Dory is served
with vegetables, potatoes, onions,
raisins and pine nuts.
FROM AUGUST TO SEPTEMBER:
Sóller Prawns. This crustacean
comes to the waters of Sóller in summer, when there is a huge deployment of the trawling fleet. It can be

SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER:
Mahi-mahi. This fish approaches
the coast in seasons when there is
lightning (“llamps” in Catalan, hence
its name of llampuga) and is more
predominant in Mallorca than in the
rest of the Mediterranean. It is used
in espinagada, a typical pie made on
Saint Anthony’s day.
FROM SEPTEMBER TO MARCH:
Pearly Razorfish. The most expensive fish in the country. Up to
100 €/kg has been paid for it. Its
scales are reddish and it is prepared
grilled or fried. It is also known as
the cleaver wrasse.

DE MARZO A AGOSTO:
Cap Roig. Cubierto de escamas y
de color rojo, este pescado de alta
calidad vive en zonas de roca y es
una de las especies más deseadas
por los pescadores mallorquines. El
mejor momento para su pesca es
por la noche.
DE MAYO A AGOSTO:
Salmonete. Pez emblemático del
mar Mediterráneo de un característico color rojo anaranjado. La receta
más tradicional se basa en freír este
pescado una vez enharinado.
DE JUNIO A SEPTIEMBRE:
Gató. Las huevas de este pez de
ojos felinos son conocidas como “bolsos de sirena” por su forma de cápsula alargada. En Mallorca se usa mucho
para la coca de verdura con gató.
Mussola. Especie protegida que
sólo puede pescarse en la reserva
de Mitjorn. Este pescado secado al
sol es el protagonista de la ensalada
payesa en Formentera.
Gall de Sant Pere. Su dorsal
parece una cresta de gallo y los
círculos en sus costados se asocian a
la moneda que sacó San Pedro de la
boca de un pez. El gallo a la mallorquina se sirve con verduras, patatas,
cebolla, pasas y piñones.
DE AGOSTO A SEPTIEMBRE:
Gamba de Sóller. Este crustáceo
llega a las aguas de Sóller en verano,
época en la que hay todo un despliegue de la flota de pesca de arrastre.
Son muchas las formas en las que se
pueden cocinar, pero se suelen freír y
servir salteadas con ajo y perejil.
SEPTIEMBRE Y OCTUBRE:
Llampuga. Se acerca a la costa en
épocas de temporales con rayos (o
“llamps” en catalán) y en Mallorca
predomina más que en el resto del
Mediterráneo. El plato típico es la
Llampuga con pimiento rojo.
DE SEPTIEMBRE A MARZO:
Raor. Es el pescado más caro del
país. Por él se han llegado a pagar
los 100 €/kg. Sus escamas son rojizas
y se cocina a la plancha o frito.
También se le conoce como lorito,
papagayo o galán.

Zahnbrasse. Fisch mit weißem Fleisch, dessen Zähne
beim Namen Pate standen. Er wird ganz einfach gekocht,
der intensive Geschmack kommt so
am besten zur Entfaltung.
MÄRZ BIS AUGUST:
Großer Drachenkopf. Der rote Fisch
lebt auf felsigen Gründen und ist bei
den Fischern Mallorcas äußerst begehrt.
Am besten angelt man ihn bei Nacht.
MAI BIS AUGUST:
Meerbarben. Einer der bekanntesten
Fische des Mittelmeeres mit orangeroter Farbgebung. Traditionelle Zubereitung: in Mehl wälzen und frittieren.
JUNI BIS SEPTEMBER:
Kleingefleckter Katzenhai. Der
Rogen des katzenäugigen Fisches hat
die Form eiförmiger Kapseln und ist
daher auch als „Nixengeldbeutel“
oder „Seemäuse“ bekannt. Auf Mallorca dienen die Fischeier oft als Zutat
für Gemüsepasteten mit Katzenhai.
Grauer Glatthai. Steht unter Schutz
und darf nur im Naturschutzgebiet
Migjorn geangelt werden. Der in der
Sonne getrocknete Fisch ist die wichtigste Zutat für einen Bauernsalat à la
Formentera.
Petersfisch. Seine Rückenflosse
gleicht einem Hahnenkamm und die
Kreise an seinen Längsseiten erinnern
an das Geldstück, das Petrus einst aus
dem Fischmaul nahm. Petersfisch nach
mallorquinischer Art wird mit Gemüse, Kartoffeln, Zwiebeln, Rosinen und
Pinienkernen serviert.
AUGUST BIS SEPTEMBER:
Sóller-Krabben. Die Krustentiere
wandern im Sommer in die Gewässer
um Sóller. Dann läuft die gesamte
Flotte der Trolling-Boote (Schleppfischer) aus. Die Krabben können
gekocht oder gebraten werden und
werden meist mit Meersalz, Knoblauch und Petersilie serviert.
SEPTEMBER UND OKTOBER:
Goldmakrele. Die Fische kommen vor
allem bei Donner und Blitz in Küstennähe. Auf Mallorca gibt es, im Vergleich
zum übrigen Mittelmeerraum, die meisten Goldmakrelen. Zutat zur SpinatTeigtasche espinagada, die zum Fest des
Heiligen Antonius zubereitet wird.
SEPTEMBER BIS MÄRZ:
Schermesserfisch. Der teuerste
Fisch des Landes mit den roten Schuppen kann schon mal 100 Euro pro Kilo
kosten. Der auch als Messerlippfisch
und Papageifisch bekannte Fisch wird
gekocht oder gegrillt.

INGREDIENTS FOR 4:
400 g “bomba” rice.
1 onion.
1 garlic clove.
1 small tomato.
2 artichokes.
A handful of green beans.
A handful of peas.
Chicken.
Rabbit.
Pork ribs.
Lean meat.
Oil and salt.
Spice preparation.
Water.
METHOD:
Pour a spoonful of olive oil into an
earthenware pot. Lightly fry the meat,
onion, garlic and other vegetables.
Add the arròs brut spice preparation,
which has clove, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cover all the
ingredients with water. Simmer for 45
minutes and add the “bomba” rice
and cook until it is done.
INGREDIENTES PARA 4 COMENSALES:
400 g de arroz “bomba”.
1 cebolla.
1 ajo.
1 tomate pequeño.
2 alcachofas.
Un puñado de judías verdes.
Un puñado de guisantes.
Pollo.
Conejo.
Carne magra.
Costillas de cerdo.
Aceite y sal.
Preparado de especias.
Agua.
PASOS A SEGUIR:
Añade una cucharada de aceite de
oliva a una cazuela de barro. Sofríe la
carne, la cebolla, el ajo y el resto de
verduras. Se añade el preparado de
especias del arròs brut, que lleva clavo,
pimienta negra, canela, nuez moscada
y se cubren todos los ingredientes con
agua. Dejar hervir durante 45 minutos
y añadir el arroz hasta que cueza.

ZUBEREITUNG:
Einen Esslöffel Olivenöl in einen
Tontopf geben und Fleisch, Zwiebel,
Knoblauch und das Gemüse darin
anbraten. Gewürzmischung für Arròs
Brut aus Gewürznelken, schwarzem
Pfeffer, Zimt und Muskatnuss zufügen und mit Wasser bedecken. 45
Minuten kochen lassen, den Reis
zugeben und gar kochen.

400 g round-grain rice, 250 g prawns,
300 g Chicken Venus clams, 300 g
squid rings, 400 g mussels, 1 onion, 2
cloves of garlic, 100 g fried tomato,
100 g peas, olive oil, bay leaf, colouring or saffron, salt and lemon.
METHOD:
Wash the seafood well. Chop the
garlic and onion and fry lightly. Add
the squid and after frying lightly,
add the rice. Meanwhile, cook the
mussels and clams with salt and a
bay leaf. Add the peas and prawns.
Add the broth from the mussels and
clams to the rice with a little saffron. Use two measures of broth for
one of rice. Now let the rice cook
and only move the pan occasionally. Afterwards, decorate with the
boiled mussels and clams. Serve
with a wedge of lemon.
INGREDIENTES PARA 6 COMENSALES:
400 g de arroz de grano redondo,
250 g de gambas, 300 g de chirlas,
300 g de anillas de calamar,
400 g de mejillones, 1 cebolla,
2 dientes de ajo, 100 g de tomate
frito, 100 g de guisantes,
aceite de oliva, laurel, colorante
o azafrán, sal y limón.
PASOS A SEGUIR:
Lavar muy bien el marisco. Picar el
ajo y la cebolla y sofreír. Añadir los
calamares y después de rehogarlos
añadir el arroz. Mientras, cocer los
mejillones y las chirlas con sal y laurel. Añadir los guisantes y las gambas. Añade al arroz el caldo de los
mejillones y las chirlas con un poco
de azafrán. La medida es doble de
caldo por uno de arroz. A partir de
ahora dejar que el arroz se cueza y
mover solamente de vez en cuando.
Después decorar con los mejillones
y chirlas ya hervidas. Servir junto a
un gajo de limón.

ZUBEREITUNG:
Meeresfrüchte gründlich waschen.
Knoblauch und Zwiebel hacken
und anbraten, Tintenfischringe
zugeben und dünsten. Danach
den Reis zufügen. Währenddessen
Muscheln und Venusmuscheln mit
Salz und Lorbeer kochen, Erbsen
und Krabben zufügen. Die Brühe
der Muscheln mit ein wenig Safran
zum Reis gießen (!x Reis und 2x
Brühe). Den Reis gar köcheln, ab
und zu umrühren. Mit den gekochten Muscheln und Venusmuscheln garnieren und mit einer Scheibe
Zitrone servieren.

uro Public Library has
been active for nearly
a century. It currently
occupies the former Civil
Guard barracks, which were adapted to offer rooms for reading and
cultural activities to the public. It
has approximately 20,000 volumes
which can be consulted using the
computerised catalogue. The collection includes books, CDs, DVDs,
magazines, newspapers and a collection of local publications on Muro.
Its services include consultation,
lending, WiFi, children’s section,
guided tours, activities to motivate
reading and BookCrossing.
In Alcúdia, Can Torró library is
defined as a centre for meeting and
communication, with free access,
designed to reinforce culture, especially in the young. Inclusive cultural
and recreational activities are held
here. Located in a typical Mallorcan
farmhouse, it was initially promoted
by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, a very
well-known institution in Germany
for its pioneering system and broader
vision of the traditional use of libraries. Can Torró is a shining example
because of its cultural programme.
The library network of Santa Margalida consists of the Joan Mascaró i
Fornés library in Santa Margalida, the
Can Picafort Municipal Library and a
library service in Son Serra de Marina.
They have an interesting collection
of books and serve users in this area.
As well as lending documents, they
organise workshops on writing and
reading, crafts, storytelling, reading sessions for adults and children.
In Can Picafort library there are also

La Escuela Municipal de Música

a los músicos de la Banda Municipal,

reglada elemental, no reglada para
niños de 5 a 7 años y el Programa de
enseñanza profesional en coordinación con el Conservatorio de Palma.

saxofón, guitarra, guitarra eléctrica,
entre otros muchos instrumentos. La
escuela cuenta con un aula de extensión en Can Picafort.

Musikalische Meisterwerke
T
he Municipal School of
Alcúdia was created in
1985 and currently offers
piano, violin, double bass,
flute, clarinet, trombone, tuba, percussion, guitar and singing courses,
amongst other specialities. Around it
there is a band that is present in the
fiestas of Alcúdia, as well as groups
of xeremiers, chamber music groups
and a youth orchestra. Many pupils
begin their immersion in the world
of music here and later go on to
pass their advanced studies in Palma
Conservatory. The school is located in
the Auditorium of Alcúdia and has 20
teachers and 200 pupils.
For its part, the Miquel Tortell Municipal School of Music of Muro was
founded in 1986, and is located in the
Cloister of the Convent in this village.
One of its objectives has always been
to be in permanent contact with Palma Conservatory, which evaluates the
centre’s pupils, and to publicise their
work through four annual concerts.
At present, it gives courses in music
Reading, initiation from age four,
vocal technique, trumpet, clarinet,
saxophone, piano, guitar and violin,
as well as other classical instruments.
The Santa Margalida Municipal
Music School was established in 1987
and although it started up in order
to train the musicians of the Municipal Band, it currently imparts official
curricular elementary lessons, unofficial lessons for children aged 5 to 7
and the professional programme in
coordination with Palma Conservatory. Here, amongst many instruments,
they teach flute, violin, saxophone,
guitar and electric guitar. The school

Kontrabass, Flöte, Klarinette, Posaune, Tuba, Percussion, Gitarre und
Gesang erlernen. Die Musikschule
unterhält ein eigenes Orchester,
das bei den Feierlichkeiten in der
Gemeinde stets präsent ist, sowie
eine Gruppe von Dudelsack-pfeifern
(xeremiers), Kammermusikorchester
und ein Jugendorchester. Viele Schüler machen hier ihre ersten Schritte
in die Welt der Musik und lernen
dann am Konservatorium Palma
weiter. Die Musikschule befindet
sich im Auditorium Alcúdia und hat
20 Lehrer und 200 Schüler.
Die Kommunale Musikschule Miquel Tortell im Kloster Muro öffnete
ihre Türen im Jahr 1986 und hat
unter anderem Kurse in Musikterminologie, Stimmtechnik, Trompete,
Klarinette, Saxophon, Klavier, Gitarre und Geige im Programm. Darüber
hinaus gibt es Kurse für Kinder ab
vier Jahren. Seit Bestehen unterhält
die Musikschule eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem Konservatorium
Palma; die dortigen Lehrer bewerten
die Schüler aus Muro. Außerdem
geben die Schüler vier Konzerte im
Jahr und zeigen ihre Lernfortschritte
vor einem breiten Publikum.
Die Kommunale Musikschule in
Santa Margalida besteht seit 1987 und
sollte zunächst nur die Musiker des
Gemeindeorchesters ausbilden. Derzeit gibt es hier eine reguläre MusikGrundausbildung, außerschulische
Musikkurse für Kinder zwischen fünf
und sieben Jahren sowie ein Berufsausbildungsprogramm in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Konservatorium Palma.
Folgende Instrumente kann man unter
anderem an der Musikschule erlernen:
Flöte, Geige, Saxophon, Gitarre und
E-Gitarre. In Can Picafort gibt es eine
Zweigstelle der Musikschule.

he eve, and the day, of
the fiesta of Sant Antoni
(16th and 17th January),
are probably the date on
which dimonis take on their most
prominent role in Mallorca, as these
figures represent the temptations
of this animal-loving saint. This
festival, which is extremely popular
above all in Muro, Artà, Manacor
and Sa Pobla, symbolises Mallorca’s
more agricultural and “peasant” era.
Students of the dimoni phenomenon
believe that as it is related to that
time in history, the evil of these wicked, scandalous and infernal beings
was meant to incarnate the natural
phenomena that spoiled crops.
Nowadays, as well as coming into
their own during the fiestas of Sant
Antoni, the correfocs of dimonis are
also very frequent in any other popular festival. Wearing terrifying masks
and red clothing, they leap and dance
along the streets of the villages, accompanied by torches and fireworks
that light up their way.

Con máscaras aterradoras y con ropaje de
color rojo saltan y bailan por las calles de los
pueblos acompañados de antorchas y fuegos
pirotécnicos que iluminan su paso.

zu Ehren des Heiligen Antonius,
spielen die dimonis genannten
Teufel auf Mallorca die Hauptrolle. Die
Teufel sind das Sinnbild für die Versuchungen, denen der Schutzheilige der Tiere zu
Lebzeiten ausgesetzt war. Das Fest, das
ganz groß in Muro, Artà, Manacor und Sa
Pobla gefeiert wird, erinnert an die von der
Landwirtschaft geprägten Jahrhunderte auf
der Insel. Experten gehen davon aus, dass
die dreisten, skandalösen und aus der Hölle
stammenden dimonis die Naturkatastrophen
symbolisieren, die Ernte und Bauern zu jener
Zeit regelmäßig heimsuchten.
Heutzutage trifft man die Teufel und die
von ihnen initiierten Feuerläufe (correfocs)
nicht nur beim Sankt Antonius Fest an,
sondern auch bei vielen anderen Volksfesten. Mit grausigen Masken und feuerroten
Gewändern springen und tanzen sie mit
Fackeln und Feuerwerk durch die Straßen
und necken die Besucher.

I
have been carrying out
my own private research
in art for over 20 years.
In 1994 I held my first
individual exhibition at the Convent of
Sant Francesc in Muro. I have now had
more than a hundred, and not only
here on the island, but also in Hamburg, London, Zurich, Milan or Los Angeles. My work is not traditional, and
by no means static. I use techniques
and materials that are superimposed
on the canvas in layers. In this way,
observers can see how the colours and
the shapes of the painting change at
different times of days, depending on
how the light falls on it.
In the north of Mallorca, there is
plenty of painting tradition, which
helps us survive, and I feel privileged
to be able to do what I love. Life in
Muro is quiet, it’s a small village and
people know each other and greet
each other on the street. I like living
in full contact with nature, which is
why my home is beside Albufera’.

me dedico a investigar
por mi cuenta en el arte.
En 1994 hice mi primera
exposición individual en el Convento
de Sant Francesc de Muro. A día de
hoy llevo más de cien y no solamente
en la isla, sino también en Hamburgo,
Londres, Zurich, Milán, o Los Ángeles.
Mi obra no es tradicional, y mucho
menos estática. Utilizo técnicas y materiales que se superponen por capas
sobre el lienzo. Así, el observador ve
cómo cambian los colores y las formas
del cuadro en distintos momentos del
día, según cómo incida la luz.
En el norte de Mallorca hay mucha
tradición por la pintura, lo que ayuda
a que sobrevivamos y me considero
un privilegiado por poder hacer lo
que me gusta. La vida en Muro es
tranquila, es un pueblo pequeño y
la gente se conoce y se saluda por la
calle. A mí me gusta vivir en pleno
contacto con la naturaleza, por lo que
mi casa está junto a la Albufera”.

eit mehr als 20 Jahren erforsche ich die Kunst. 1994 hatte
ich im Konvent Sant Francesc
in Muro meine erste Einzelausstellung. Mittlerweile sind es mehr
als hundert, nicht nur auf der Insel, sondern auch in Hamburg, London, Zürich,
Mailand oder Los Angeles. Meine Werke sind weder traditionell noch statisch,
ich benutze Techniken und Materialien,
die sich auf der Leinwand schichtweise
überlappen. So können die, die meine
Bilder anschauen, beobachten, wie sich
Farben und Formen eines Bildes je nach
Tageszeit und Lichteinfall verändern.
Die Malerei hat im Norden eine
lange Tradition und das hilft Leuten wie
mir zu überleben. Ich gehöre zu den privilegierten Menschen, die das machen
können, was sie am meisten ausfüllt.
Das Leben in Muro ist beschaulich, das
Dorf ist klein, die Leute kennen sich,
man grüßt sich auf der Straße. Ich lebe
gern in engem Kontakt mit der Natur,
deswegen steht mein Haus auch unmittelbar am Feuchtgebiet La Albufera”.

am versatile, I like to
experiment and I try not
to limit myself in terms of
techniques, styles or movements. I believe in continuous learning
and have no problem with changing
direction. One of these turns led me to
urban art. I was living in Berlin where
I was doing a residency in art management, and we took an alternative tour
of the city on urban art. I immediately
thought about how to adapt it to Mallorca. For me, it is an impressive social
transformation tool. I use the street as
a canvas, because it gives me freedom. Routines tire me and challenges
inspire me. If you are capable of discovering and expressing the character
of a people with simplicity, you will
be able to influence the way they
see the world. I think my work has
been received well, and I feel happy
to know that I form an active part of
the cultural movement of my area.
Life is peaceful in Can Picafort. I like
summer, and my happy memories belong to the north coast of Mallorca,
to huts amidst the pine trees, bikes,
macaroni and the sea, lots of sea’.

oy versátil, me gusta
experimentar e intento no
limitarme a técnicas, estilos o corrientes. Creo en el
aprendizaje continuo y no tengo inconveniente en cambiar de dirección.
Uno de estos giros me llevó al arte
urbano. Vivía en Berlín donde hacia
una residencia en gestión de arte
e hicimos un tour alternativo sobre
arte urbano por la ciudad. Enseguida
pensé en cómo adaptarlo a Mallorca. Para mí es una herramienta de
transformación social impresionante.
Uso la calle como lienzo porque me
da libertad. Las rutinas me cansan y
los retos me mueven. Si eres capaz de
descubrir y expresar con sencillez el
carácter de un pueblo serás capaz de
influir en su modo de ver el mundo.
Creo que mi trabajo ha tenido buena
acogida, y me siento contento al
saber que formo parte activa del movimiento cultural de mi zona. En Can
Picafort la vida es tranquila. Me gusta
el verano y mis recuerdos felices pertenecen a la costa norte de Mallorca,
a cabañas entre pinos, bicicletas,
macarrones y mar, mucho mar”.

Problem damit, die Richtung zu ändern.
Einer dieser Wechsel führte mich zur
Urban Art. Bei einem Arbeitsaufenthalt in
Berlin machten wir eine alternative Tour
durch die Urban Art der Stadt. Mir kam sofort die Idee, dies auf Mallorca anzuwenden. Urban Art ist für mich ein großartiges
künstlerisches Instrument des gesellschaftlichen Wandels. Ich benutze die Straße als
Leinwand, denn sie gibt mir die Freiheit.
Routinen ermüden mich, Bewegung
hingegen motiviert mich. Wenn du fähig
bist, den Charakter eines Volkes zu entdecken und aufrichtig auszudrücken, dann
kannst du den Blickwinkel dieses Volkes
auf die Welt beeinflussen. Ich glaube,
meine Kunst kommt gut an und ich finde
es toll, aktiv an der Kulturbewegung
meines Wohnortes teilzunehmen. In Can
Picafort ist das Leben ruhig. Ich mag den
Sommer, meine schönsten Erinnerungen habe ich an Mallorcas Nordküste,
an Hütten zwischen Pinien, Fahrräder,
Makkaroni und Meer, viel Meer“.

with every step you take.
Which is why I feel I am
self-taught, and I believe you have to
face up to the solitude of the studio
from time to time. After 30 years, I
have exhibited my works in cities
like Havana, Toulouse or Amsterdam,
and in other cities around Spain. All
of these exhibitions have helped
me grow as a human being and
artistically. Recently I started to put
painting to one side and I dedicate
myself to visual poetry, the magic
of the fortuitous encounter with
the pursued object, adapting it to
my language and to photography.
The themes I am most drawn to are
feelings, nature or social statements.
The artists I am drawn to are Joseph
Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, Chema
Madoz… I travel fairly regularly, but
there is nothing better than being
inspired by the place I was born in,
Alcúdia, where my roots, my memories, my friends are, as well as a grand
historical legacy and and extraordinary natural environment’.

para crecer humanamente y artísticamente. Últimamente he empezado
a dejar a un lado la pintura y me
dedico a la poesía visual, la magia
del encuentro fortuito con el objeto
perseguido adaptándolo a mi lenguaje y a la fotografía. Los temas que
más me atraen son los sentimientos,
la naturaleza o la denuncia social. Los
artistas por los que me siento atraído
son Joseph Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, Chema Madoz… Viajo con
cierta regularidad, pero no hay mejor
lugar en que inspirarse que el que
nací, Alcúdia, donde están mis raíces,
mis recuerdos, mis amigos, además de
su gran herencia histórica y su entorno natural extraordinario”.

All diese Schauen haben mich sowohl
in persönlicher als auch künstlerischer
Hinsicht vorangebracht. In letzter Zeit
widme ich mich weniger der Malerei,
sondern der visuellen Poesie, bei der ich
den magischen Moment des zufälligen
Zusammentreffens von Objekten einfange und ihn an meine Sprache und die
Fotografie anpasse. Gefühle, Natur und
soziale Missstände sind die Themen, die
mich faszinieren. Künstlern, wie Joseph
Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg oder Chema Madoz fühle ich mich sehr verbunden. Obwohl ich regelmäßig auf Reisen
gehe, ist mein Geburtsort Alcúdia meine
beste Quelle der Inspiration. Hier liegen
meine Wurzeln, leben meine Freunde
und Erinnerungen. Außerdem hat Alcúdia eine großartige Geschichte und eine
außergewöhnlich schöne Natur“.

scientific description of the Balearic
archipelago. It was written in German by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of
Habsburg-Lorraine (1847-1915), who
collected data incognito, dressed in
ragged clothes, and certified them
with his friend Francisco Manuel de
los Herreros Schwager, the then-director of the Balearic Institute.
The result is a precise cultural and

The Archduke spread the word
about the Balearic archipelago to
such an extent that, in 1909, he was
posthumously awarded the title of
honorary president of the Tourism
Promotion society, Fomento del Turismo. And in 2015, tribute was paid
to him in the islands on the occasion
of the first centenary of his death.
