Breakthrough now has over 200 students from grades seven through eleven on the path to
college. Through our rigorous summer programs, year-round mentoring, academic guidance, and
informative family workshops, Breakthrough helps bridge the gap in educational achievement
between low-income and affluent students.
We have moved over 90% of our students into honors or advanced-level courses, and more than
a third of our high school students are in the city’s most selective college-prep programs.
Breakthrough makes a long-term commitment over a six-year period to make sure these students
get the resources and guidance they need to become college graduates.
Breakthrough empowers its students to take an active role in achieving success: we show
them how to take control of their education, build their skills and set high goals. And with your
help—whether you’re a family member, volunteer, donor, teacher, tutor or staff member—these
promising students are well on their way to becoming the first person in their families to graduate

Because students who become first-generation
college graduates have the power to end
poverty in their family lines forever.1

attend college, students who complete
college earn an additional $1 million over
the course of their careers.4

Each summer, students from poor
families experience “summer slide”—
a learning loss in reading and math
skills of over two months. While
affluent children participate in
enrichment programs, camps, and
family vacations, low-income children
lack such opportunities.5
Cada verano, los estudiantes de
familias pobres sufren de “summer
slide”— una perdida de más de dos
meses en sus habilidades de lectura y

Jackie’s mother Delores attended some college in
Mexico, but she and Jackie’s father Juan have high
hopes that their daughter’s passion for English and
helping others will make her the first college
graduate in the family. “Breakthrough is always
talking about college and the future,” Delores says.
“We have noticed that Jackie feels more motivated,
more sure of herself, and definitely she can see how
there are more opportunities.”
Before starting Austin High School in the fall, Jackie
will attend Access Exeter, an intensive summer
school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New
Hampshire. There she’ll get to study animal samples
on the beach, see New England for the first time
and make new friends. “I’m excited because my
parents aren’t going to be there,” Jackie admits. An
aspiring “first lady president,” Jackie says
Breakthrough taught her to “be organized with your
homework, and never give up.”

Enrollment in challenging high
school classes is the leading
predictor of academic achievement
and the single most important
factor in college completion — yet
low-income students are
dramatically underrepresented in
these classes.6

As a Breakthrough student, Nico noticed that
Breakthrough’s teachers served as leaders in the
program and in their schools. “And that rubs off on
us,” Nico says. “We take that as an example and
use it.” Breakthrough helped Nico improve his
public speaking and writing skills, in turn building
self-esteem and social skills. As a result, Nico, a
well-rounded student who loves baseball and has
excelled in his schoolwork, quickly became a role
model to the younger students in his middle school.
Nico now attends St. Andrew’s Episcopal
School, where he continues to succeed in
academics and sports. He hopes to become a
Navy Seal and has a strong passion for helping
people. Nico’s mother Monica is thrilled with
how Breakthrough has helped her son: “He’s
getting to do the schoolwork that’s his next
grade level. With everyone working with Nico
and allowing him to grow, they have helped him
mature into a wonderful young man.”

ON SUCCESS
Leslie takes an active role in making her college
dreams happen. Whenever she has time away from
school activities or hanging out with friends, she
surfs the Web for information about colleges and
universities.
When Leslie learned about an exciting Yale summer
program, Breakthrough pulled resources together to
help this straight-A student take advantage of a
valuable learning experience. Yale alumni and other
Austin community members raised $500, which
Breakthrough Board Chair Neil Webber matched
dollar-for-dollar to help pay for trip expenses and
college visits. “They helped me by setting higher
goals than what I had,” Leslie says of Breakthrough.
“And they also helped me achieve.”
