In a nutshell
Der Huangpu teilt die Stadt in zwei Hälften, bevor er weiter nordwestlich in den Yangtse mündet. Das Geschäftsund Businessviertel Pudong befindet sich östlich des
Huangpu (Dong bedeutet Osten). Hier gleicht Shanghai
einer modernen Planstadt mit geraden Strassen und beeindruckenden Wolkenkratzern. Der alte Teil Shanghais,
Puxi, liegt auf der Westseite des Flusses (Xi bedeutet
­Westen). Hier befinden sich die chinesischen Altstadt, die
europäisch geprägten Viertel und zahlreiche Neubauten.
Zwischen 1842 und 1949 war Shanghai von europäischen Kolonialmächten geprägt. Die Stadt erlebte einen
Boom in dieser Zeit. Nach der Machtergreifung der Kommunisten 1949 wurde Shanghai vernachlässigt. Erst Anfang der 90er-Jahre erlebte die Stadt eine Renaissance.
2010 beherbergte Shanghai die World Expo und rückte ins
internationale Rampenlicht.
The city proper is divided in two by the Huangpu River,
which then flows north-west into the Yangtze. The Pudong
business district lies to the east of the river (“dong” means
“east”). Here Shanghai has the look and feel of a planned
city, with its straight streets and soaring buildings. The old
part of the city, Puxi, lies to the west of the Huangpu (“xi”
means “west”). This is where visitors will find the Chinese
Old Town and the Europeanised districts, along with many
newer buildings, too.
Between 1842 and 1949 Shanghai was firmly in the hands
of the European colonial powers. They were flourishing
times. But after the communists came to power in 1949, the
city was neglected. Only in the early 1990s did the renaissance begin. And by the time it hosted the World Expo in
2010, Shanghai had clearly returned to the international
stage.

Jews found refuge from Nazi persecution in Shanghai until the

Die Museenlandschaft in
China boomt: Kein Jahr vergeht
in Shanghai, ohne dass nicht
mindestens eines neu eröffnet
wird. Die Besucherzahlen
­halten damit allerdings nicht
mit. So kann es passieren,

Kraftwerk eine grandiose
­Ausstellung besucht – mit gerade mal einem Dutzend anderer
Kunstliebhaber.
China’s museum scene is experiencing a boom: not a year
passes without at least one new
one opening in Shanghai. The
number of people who go to
them, however, is not keeping
pace with this rapid growth rate.
So it’s quite possible to view a
­terrific exhibition staged at
this former power station in the
­com­pany of no more than a
dozen or so other visitors.

described). Visitors strolling today along Anfu Lu, Wulumuqi

trees. Taxis are cheap, so there’s
no problem if you manage to get
lost while roaming these peaceful avenues.

Bund, the Swiss watch company
helps promote young international artists. Board and lodging
are provided free of charge for six
months with the sole condition
that each of the twelve artists in
residence should leave one work
behind on departure by way of
thanks. In addition to a profusion
of art, the building, which dates
back to 1908, also contains a restaurant and bar.

Häuschen. Heute ist das Viertel
ein charmantes Labyrinth aus
kleinen Gässchen, in dem sich
über 200 Cafés, Restaurants,
Kunstgalerien und Boutiquen
angesiedelt haben.

of artists – objected, it was decided to renovate the traditional
­little houses there. Today, the
