HHL Open School Initiative – HHL’s
service to the corporate world
The interlinking of theory and practice has
always been at the core of management
education at HHL – in 1898 as today. In April
2007, the value and significance of the excellent relations HHL has developed with the
corporate world were recognized when HHL’s
Open School Initiative was awarded first
prize in the nationwide competition entitled
“Exchange processes between academia
and business” run by Stifterverband für die
Deutsche Wissenschaft and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The two-way transfer of knowledge and experience takes many forms: inclusion of practitioners in the student selection process, integration of field projects into curricula (25
projects in 2008 and 2009), corporate recruiting through company presentations (on
average 30 per year), founding of start-ups
and sponsoring, as well as joint research projects. HHL is in constant dialog with its business partners locally, nationwide, and internationally.

and lack of specialists
Companies often comment that highly qualified staff are hard to find, even in the current
difficult economic climate. HHL’s part-time
MBA Program and – from January 2011 onwards – part-time M.Sc. Program offer excellent solutions to this problem. The Integrated
Management approach developed and applied at HHL produces effective and responsible business leaders who are well prepared
to deal with the challenges of today’s international business arena.

Aside from training the next generation of
executives, HHL also offers programs specifically tailored for middle and senior managers
via its subsidiary HHL Executive. As well as
receiving updates in all economic and management disciplines based on the latest research, senior executives also learn to use
instruments to analyze their personal strengths
and weaknesses in order to enhance their
leadership skills.
A further link in the close relationship between
HHL and the corporate world is exemplified
by the Center for Leading Innovation and Cooperation (CLIC), which conducts publicly
funded research projects in collaboration with
companies all over Germany. CLIC is devoted
to fostering companies’ ability to innovate
and to inspiring people in organizations to

New! Part-time M.Sc. Program starts in 2011
a degree in a traditional, single-stage program
(Diploma). The part-time M.Sc. content is
closely related to the curriculum of the full-time
M.Sc. course and is designed to prepare
effective and responsible business leaders for
the challenges of the 21st century. Courses are
taught completely in English. Participants will
benefit from a state-of-the-art, practice-oriented management education, highly committed faculty and staff as well as an international
student body.
HHL’s new part-time Master of Science in Management (M.Sc.) kicks off in January 2011.
Admission to the two-year course, which will
normally take place every fortnight on Friday
evening and Saturday on HHL’s campus, requires a business studies-related Bachelor or
HHL’s new part-time M.Sc. Program starts in
January 2011. The application deadline is
November 1, 2010. Further information at:

Transition in Dean’s Office at HHL
HHL will face a change in the Dean’s Office.
Professor Dr. Hans Wiesmeth’s five-year
contract will expire in the end of March 2010,
and he will be returning to TU Dresden, to
resume the Chair of Economics, focussing
on Allocation Theory. Currently, interviews
with potential successors for the position as
Dean of HHL are underway.
Course for sustainable
growth is set
During his five years as Dean of Germany’s
oldest business school, Wiesmeth was able to
set the course for HHL’s sustainable growth.
Under his leadership, the school’s strategy
was formulated in the paper “HHL 2020” on
the basis of its mission to educate effective
and responsible business leaders through excellence in teaching, research and practice. In
parallel, a fundraising plan was developed to
facilitate the realization of the strategy. The implementation phase is now well underway,
and initial positive results have been achieved.
HHL is aiming high for the years ahead, targeting a ranking among the top 10 European
business schools by the year 2020. An important prerequisite for success in reaching this
ambitious goal is growth: a doubling of the
number of students, and expansion of the
chairs, research centers, and service providers. In the past five years HHL’s high standards of quality have been maintained and
even raised, as has been confirmed through
the accreditation of all the study programs by
the German agency ACQUIN as well as the
maintenance of institutional accreditation by
AACSB International. HHL is still one of only
three business faculties in Germany to boast
the AACSB seal of quality.
Collaboration of HHL with
businesses intensified
Wiesmeth was able to establish HHL in the region and beyond as a partner and a place for
collaborative knowledge generation bringing together management know-how and management practice. The HHL Open School Initiative
bundles the manifold exchange processes between academia and the corporate world. Aside
from field projects that confront teams of HHL
students with real-life business challenges, regular Unternehmergespräche and other events
with entrepreneurs connect HHL with companies in the region.
Fields for growth expanded
Dean Wiesmeth’s period of office also saw the
beginning of HHL’s expansion. On September
1, 2007, the Heinz Nixdorf Chair of IT-based Logistics was established. The Center for IT-based
Logistics Leipzig (CITLOG) at this Chair has been
supported by the Leipzig Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer since January 1,

2008. On March 1, 2009, the Center for Scenario Planning financed by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants was launched. The support of
the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation and of the
Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft
resulted in the establishment of the Dr. Werner
Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business
Ethics on September 1, 2009. This Chair
transitioned smoothly from the former DOW
Research Professorship for Sustainabilty and
Global Ethics supported by DOW Germany.
Additionally, since 2005 the following excellent
research centers have been set up, financed
solely by third-party funds: Center for Healthcare Management, Center for Leading Innovation & Cooperation, Center for Corporate Transactions und Center for Financial Reporting &
Consolidation. Flanking the increased student
numbers, more administrative staff are also
gradually being recruited.

Highlights
Term starts at HHL with 153 new students from 26 countries
A grand total of 153 students from 26 countries have enrolled in HHL’s programs for the
Fall term 2009. Among them are 40 exchange
students from HHL’s ever-increasing network
of international partner universities, currently
totaling 104. This means that the proportion
of international students at Germany’s oldest
business school lies at around 40%.

KARL-KOLLE-Foundation supports HHL
Academia and research are the endowment focus
of the KARL-KOLLE-Foundation, which was created
in 1998 by the Dortmund-based entrepreneur Karl
Kolle (1913-2008). From the “KARL KOLLE Library
of Strategic Management and Organization” to a
prize for an outstanding master thesis, the
involvement of the KARL-KOLLE-Foundation at
Germany’s oldest business school is as varied as
it is effective. With a master thesis entitled
“Enterprise succession in small and medium-sized
family businesses,” M.Sc. graduate Cora Theißen
was the first winner of the KARL KOLLE Prize for
Strategic Management at HHL, receiving her
award at the end of July 2009. In 2008, scholarships for highly qualified students from Eastern
Europe were awarded by the KARL-KOLLEFoundation to Andrey Sereda (Russia) and Sona
Žácková (Czech Republic). Ms. Žácková is also the
recipient of the DAAD Prize “Best International
Student” in 2009. The prize is awarded by the
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to
foreign students at German universities in order
to honor superior academic achievements in
combination with exemplary contributions to
the life of the institution and strong social or
intercultural commitment. In 2009, the KARLKOLLE-Foundation awarded scholarships to
Tatiana Bazhenova (Russia), Tarlan Mammadov
(Azerbaijan), Karol Ceynowa (Poland),
Igor Stepanishchev, and Ramilya Sufianova (both
Russia). Besides their KARL KOLLE Scholarships,
the three Russian students are also being
supported by the DAAD.
Friends of HHL: Daniela and Jürgen
Westphal Foundation
Since 1997, the Daniela and Jürgen Westphal
Foundation for the Advancement of Private
Universities has generously provided scholarships
for HHL students to help them finance their studies
abroad. The foundation was established in 1987
by Dr. Jürgen Westphal, long-serving Finance
Minister of Schleswig-Holstein and member of
the Constitutional Court of Hamburg, and his wife
Daniela, owner of a public relations company.
Dr. Westphal explains their motivation: “Private
universities in Germany are important for enabling
highly qualified students to develop their own
personalities.”

Chemical Employers’ Associations (BAVC) for
their support and their involvement during the
second day of our enrollment event. The new
HHL students discussed in detail various
aspects of the so-called “Wittenberg Process” between the partners in the chemical
industry, an agreement which is considered
exemplary for the way in which sustainability
and accountability in business practice can
function in industry.” HHL’s eventful history as
well as its good relations with the University of
Leipzig were also highlighted during the enrollment ceremony. The Rector of the University of Leipzig, Professor Dr. Franz Häuser,
returned a well-preserved ceremonial gown
which had originally been donated to the
Dean and the Rector of the Handels-Hochschule Leipzig in 1930.

HHL is one of only five tertiary institutions in
Germany which is supported by the foundation.
Each year scholarships are offered for overseas
studies, special research projects or for a period of
research abroad in connection with a doctoral
thesis. HHL’s Diploma graduate Uta Fischer (K22)
received a scholarship for her term abroad at the
Solvay Business School (Belgium). “Some people
think that all students of private universities are
well-off. This is definitely not the case. The Daniela
and Jürgen Westphal Foundation is aware of this,
and supports students, who not only demonstrate
motivation and academic skills but also financial
need,” says Fischer. Since its start, a total of 184
students have received a scholarship, which, on
average, is worth EUR 2,500 to EUR 3,000.

at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU), says: “For me,
the HHL Scholarship for Effective
and Responsible Leadership opens

schools. Not only the excellent academic education but also HHL’s
uniquely close ties to leading international companies, especially in the
field of consulting, are very valuable
for my future career.” In her essay entitled “Important Impediments for Effective and Responsible Leadership,”
Noack concludes: “Effective and responsible leadership is the sum of correct
decisions.” Svenja Klups is also delighted
about the scholarship and says: “I chose
HHL because it combines all the factors
which I personally consider most important
for a top business school: excellent education with high degree of practical relevance
as well as extremely motivated and international fellow students.”

In 2009, HHL offered three new scholarships,
each to the value of EUR 15,000, to outstanding applicants for the 18-month Master
Program in Management (M.Sc.). The Scholarship for Effective and Responsible Leadership supports HHL’s mission “to educate effective and responsible business leaders
through excellence in teaching, research, and
practice” and targets high potential students.
Selection criteria include a first degree in
business or economics, a high GMAT score
as well as the submission of an essay in English. Candidates are expected to demonstrate willingness to achieve high goals, leadership qualities, as well as commitment in
the area of sustainability. In September 2009,
the scholarships were awarded to Svenja
Klups (23) and Sabrina Noack (23). Sabrina

The second “HHL Excellence Dinner” was
held on September 17, 2009, at the Ringcafé
in Leipzig. As in the year before, HHL invited
around 100 guests to this fundraising event
to support the success of HHL and its vision
“HHL 2020:” to become one of the Top 10
business schools in Europe, to double the
number of students, and to strengthen faculty
and research. Representatives from the
worlds of business, politics and society attended the HHL Excellence Dinner and donated
almost EUR 100,000 to support the education of effective and responsible business lead-

by their enthusiasm, participants at the Excellence Dinner showed their commitment

YOU! After a short welcome speech by Professor Dr. Georg Milbradt, former Prime Minister of Saxony who has been Chair of the
Kramer Foundation of HHL since January
2009, this year’s keynote speech was given by
Professor Dr. Hubert Burda, CEO of Hubert
Burda Media. He highlighted the importance
of a comprehensive education. One of the
most prominent publishers in the Germanspeaking world, Professor Burda particularly
emphasized the relevance of knowledge in
the field of media as a challenge for future
managers. Following Professor Burda’s dinner speech, two HHL students – Uta Fischer
and Friedrich von Bernewitz (both K22) – told
the guests what studying at HHL is like, what
challenges they face and pointed out the value of an interdisciplinary education. In addition to knowledge acquisition, interpersonal
and intercultural relationships are just as essential for HHL students who come from all

been at the core of HHL’s education from the
beginning. We are very proud that the Dr.
Werner Jackstädt Foundation, Wuppertal, decided to fund the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of
Economic and Business Ethics together with
the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissen-
schaft at HHL to the tune of EUR 1.5 million
over the next five years. Dr. Marc Kanzler,

HHL news: The Sparkasse Leipzig is
strongly involved in the area of education.
What are the reasons for this?
Dr. Harald Langenfeld: Economic and social
development has been moving in a clear
direction: we are becoming a knowledgebased society. Educational capital, in the
form of well-trained and academically
qualified labor, is the central basis of
Germany’s economic competitiveness and
power of innovation. Local educational
opportunities – especially at college and
university level – are an increasingly important
location factor. The American statesman
Benjamin Franklin said, “an investment in
knowledge always pays the best interest.”
The Sparkasse Leipzig strives to strengthen
Leipzig as a center of research and innovation. We believe that support for science
and research, as well as providing learning
opportunities for a wide cross section of
the population, is a significant part of our
corporate responsibility.
HHL news: How would you describe the
partnership between your company and
HHL?
Dr. Harald Langenfeld: We have supported
HHL from the start and are proud to help lay
the foundation for the education of talented
young executives. Since 1993, we have
been a member of the Board of Trustees of
the Kramer Foundation and have funded the
Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Chair of Macroeconomics headed by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm
Althammer. The chair focuses on macroeconomic theory and its implications for

economic policy, especially in the field of
international economic relations. Its research
centers on international economic policy,
environmental policy and their interaction.
The chair has proved to be a very effective
way of connecting support for research and
education on a long-term basis.
HHL news: From your point of view: what
does a manager need today?
Dr. Harald Langenfeld: Certainly there are a
number of characteristics that a manager
needs to have to be successful – leadership
qualities, assertiveness, the ability to think
strategically and in terms of day-to-day
management, to name just a few. Recent
history – the financial crisis, corruption affairs,
spying scandals, and failed takeovers – has
shown that good management depends first
and foremost on the right attitude. Good
managers build trust. They build trust
through honesty, frankness, and credibility in
their everyday dealings with staff, business
partners, clients, and society at large.
Sustainable thinking and acting are more
important than ever before.

On September 18, 2009, HHL’s 1st International Manager Golf Tournament took place at
the Golfplatz Noitzscher Heide. HHL invited
regional and international business leaders to
prove themselves on the golf course and to
support HHL’s successful Entrepreneurship
Program. The Golf Cup was held under the
patronage of Dr. Horst Saalbach, initiator and
main sponsor of the cup and member of
HHL’s Board of Trustees. Other patrons were
Professor Dr. Georg Milbradt, former Prime
Minister of the Free State of Saxony and now
Chairman of HHL’s Kramer Foundation, Christian Strenger, member of the supervisory

Expanding successful partnership
with Lithuania
Two years ago, HHL and the ISM University
of Management and Economics in Vilnius,
Lithuania, signed a coorporation agreement on
mutual student exchange. ISM was established
in 1999 as the first privately-owned institution
of management education in Lithuania.
The Executive Management of HHL took the
opportunity to visit the partner school in
November 2009 and agreed to the expansion
of the fruitful cooperation.

tournament was perfect. The weather was
sunny and the 60 golfers and spectators enjoyed themselves on

which will take place on September 3, 2010.

New partner in Russia
HHL and the Plekhanov Russian Academy of
Economics have agreed to launch an exchange
program in 2010. Plekhanov Russian Academy
of Economics is located in Moscow, Russia. The
academy has the highest level of accreditation
from the Ministry of Education and Science of
Russia, and takes part in numerous international
university collaborations. It is currently one of
the top-ranked universities in Russia.
The partnership was discussed during a visit by
Professor Dr. Vladimir G. Knjazev (Vice Rector of
the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics),
and Professor Dr. Andrey V. Zverev (MinisterCounsellor of the Embassy of the Russian
Federation in the Federal Republic of Germany)

The project “ServProf – Learning and Living
Service Professionalism,” which is coordinated
by HHL’s Center for Leading Innovation and
Cooperation (CLIC), has received an overwhelming response. We were particularly excited to
be named “Project of the Month” by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Each month, new and innovative advanced
projects are highlighted on the award’s website,
CLIC @ the Airport Executive
Leadership Program in Jacksonville
In early October 2009, Dr. Marcus Kölling and
Jessica Scheler were part of the faculty in a
week-long Airport Executive Leadership Program
in Jacksonville/Florida, USA. Airport industry
senior executives were the target group of this
program, which was organized by managers
from Concordia University Montreal/Quebec,
Canada. The international group consisted of
industry experts from the USA, South America,
Europe and Asia. In the course of the workshop,
the group looked critically at the topic of
leadership, with Dr. Kölling and Ms. Scheler
providing food for thought on “Leadership for
Innovation.” The presentation and subsequent
discussion placed emphasis on organizational
challenges to the generation of incremental and
radical innovations, as well as the leadership of
open innovation. Additionally, the two CLIC
representatives participated in a discussion
panel on “International Management” at the
event. Many interesting leads and starting
points for future collaboration with CLIC were a
direct result of the interactive workshop.

Two important meetings took place in October within the framework of the ServProf project. Angelika Pößl presented the project at
the GTW Convention in Bremen on October
5, 2009. The convention focused on topics
such as professional education, qualification
and competence development. A large part
of Angelika Pößl´s presentation is available on

Additionally, Claudia Lehmann and Dr. Marcus Kölling participated in a meeting at the
Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart on
October 29. The attendees had fruitful discussions on the topic of how service quality
can be improved by taking pride in one's
work. At the meeting, the ServProf project
and particularly the recently released ServProf platform www.servprof.de attracted
considerable interest from the participants.
ServProf bundles research carried out by 15
Germany-wide research collaboratories involving more than 50 individual projects. At
www.servprof.de, the public can learn more
about the initiative and the overall scope of
the research. The two main research foci are
presented as central entry points into more
detailed project summaries of the collaboratories, the individual projects, and the people
and institutions involved. There is also up-todate news about all projects, meetings and
relevant research. Furthermore, the platform
affords visitors the possibility to cluster latest
research according to key categories such
as, “branch”, “research method”, and “research questions.” This classification allows
for quick snapshots to be made of specific
fields of interest e.g. research on service professionalism in the elderly care sector.

QUIS Conference
At the QUIS 11 Conference that took place
June 11-14, 2009, CLIC was energetically
represented by Dr. Marcus Kölling, Claudia
Lehmann, Angelika Pößl, Jessica Scheler
and Stefan Thallmaier. The last biannual
QUIS Conference was in Orlando, Florida,
but this year's conference was organized by
the Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt in close cooperation with Volkswagen
After Sales and was staged in Wolfsburg,
home of VW. “Towards Ambidextrous Service Innovators: Lessons Learned From The
German Airport Industry” was the title of the
panel presentation given by Dr. Marcus Kölling and Jessica Scheler. In addition, the
CLIC team had the chance to showcase the
leading German service innovators as represented in the “Travel Guide: Services Made In
Germany” (see the Summer 2009 edition of
HHL news). There was also ample opportunity for interesting conversations at HHL’s
convention stand. Of particular note were
some Swiss colleagues who were excited
about the concept of the “Travel Guide”, so
much so that they now also intend to initiate

Mid-November 2009 HHL Executive’s first
open-enrollment General Management Program with Professor Dr. Torsten Wulf as Academic Director successfully ended with a
business simulation game. Divided into small
groups, the participants had to face various
market and business situations, while developing their businesses. The competition was
tough, but one team managed to come out
just ahead of the others by the close of business.
The HHL Executive General Management
Program is designed for managers who want
to expand their business knowledge. The six
2.5-day modules include important methods
and tools on topics such as strategy, problem solving, leadership, brand management, finance and controlling. The next round

Applying theory to daily management practice

As Managing Director of the medium-sized
company AllTec Automation and Communications Technology, Carsten Reeck’s professional roots lie in the field of Electrical
Engineering. With years of practical experience as well as a part-time degree in
Industrial Engineering and a master’s
course in Business Marketing, he gained
the necessary knowledge and competencies
to manage a company. HHL news talks
with Carsten Reeck about his personal
experiences with HHL Executive’s General
Management Program (GMP).
HHL news: Why did you decide to join
HHL Executive’s GMP?
Carsten Reeck: The GMP allowed me to
update my knowledge in the fields of
corporate strategy, marketing, finance, and
controlling at one of the most renowned
business schools in Germany. I also really
wanted to further develop my problem-solving abilities as well as my own leadership
style and communication skills.
HHL news: Which theoretical content of
the GMP could you convert directly into
your daily work as a Manager?
Carsten Reeck: In my daily routine I can
particularly apply questions of problem
identification and structuring as well as the

clear communication of solutions. In addition,
the contents of the module “Strategy &
Competition” offer a very good basis for the
examination, development and adjustment of
one’s own strategic plans.
HHL news: Among other things, the GMP
focuses on enhancing participants’ soft
skills. How exactly are leadership skills
delivered?
Carsten Reeck: The transfer of leadership
skills is particularly emphasized in the module
“Leadership & Communication”. In this context the meaning of the social and personal
authority of managers, the evaluation and
development of one’s own management
abilities and the personal style of leadership
are at the center of the seminar.

some of Germany’s best painters such as

After two years of hibernation, the entrepreneurship student initiative “accelerate@hhl” was
revived this term. Over 15 students joined up
to regularly meet and discuss entrepreneurial
ideas. In addition, they focus on developing their
skills with a view to starting up a business and
also organize field trips to start-ups and
investors in Germany to learn more about the
world of entrepreneurship. The initiative is
mentored by venture capitalist and business
builder Team Europe Ventures (TEV), run by
Kolja Hebenstreit, Stefan Hoellinger and HHL
alumni Lukasz Gadowski (K12) and Pawel
Chudzinski (K15). TEV provides support with
contacts, coaching and presentations on
topics specific to start-ups.

HHL's international students during the “multiculti party” in October 2009
ing together students from Germany and abroad. The exceptional commitment of the
committee members has already borne rich
fruit: since the beginning of the 2009/10 academic year last September, several visits to
Leipzig’s opera house have taken place, as
have excursions to the “Euro-Scene” festival
for contemporary theater. Just a few weeks
after the start of the term, FAUST invited 18
students on a trip to Munich which included
both “high” culture (a concert by the Munich
Philharmonic, a guided tour through the Pinakothek museum) and probably Germany’s
most famous popular cultural event, the
Oktoberfest.
Discussions with representatives of the
orchestra’s management and with the President of the Friends of the Munich Philharmonic, Professor Dr. Wilhelm Simson (former
chairman of E.ON), gave an interesting insight
into the world of cultural management. Three
a wide spectrum of different galleries and
boutique shops. Another highlight of the term
was the so-called “multiculti party” when students from all over the world cooked typical
meals from their home countries. And in October, just after the traditional Feast of Diwali,
students from India gave HHL a little taste of
their country – both in food and in photos.
Continuing the tasting theme, the wine seminar on November 17 led to an evening of bibulous enjoyment. An excursion to Weimar –
including a tour of the city and the site of
Buchenwald concentration camp – followed
only few days later. In 2010, there is yet more
to come: trips to Dresden and Barcelona, a
visit to a puppet theater, a cappella music,
the fine arts and first-class classical music at

developing countries. The basic idea of BSWB is
that business students organize and conduct aid
projects in Third World countries in order to
apply their business knowledge for philanthropic

registering the association and searching for
experienced partners who will be able to assist
us setting up different projects. We are happy to

HHL news: How did your studies at HHL
prepare you for your career?
During my studies at HHL, I learned the
basic skills for being successful in my
present job. Even though I had to learn the
specific IT know-how on the job, HHL
taught me how to solve problems
effectively, how to work in small teams and
how to handle high work loads. In the
course of my studies I gained a good idea
of how the consulting profession might
work.
Ulrike Friedrich
After receiving her HHL Diploma, Ulrike
Friedrich (K3) joined the IT consulting company CSC Ploenzke. After two years, she
moved to Eurohypo Systems GmbH as an
SAP consultant and software developer. At
the end of 2008, the company was integrated into Commerzbank AG, where she is
now working in the finance architecture environment of the IT department in customer
management.
HHL news: What does your current job
involve?
As a business analyst and project manager
in Commerzbank’s IT department, I’m
involved in implementing an SAP-based
finance and accounting platform for the
new integrated bank. In this project, I am
responsible for coordinating the internal and
external development engineers in the
software implementing team. As an SAP
specialist, I work on the IT side, but my

On the third weekend of October, HHL alumni
celebrated their traditional Homecoming. It was
a fun-filled three-day event in which 52 alumni
and their guests from 18 classes participated.
Friedhelm Wachs (Chairman of HHL Alumni e. V.)
sees the “fostering of growth of our
members and of HHL” as the main goal.
“This year’s Homecoming was again a
tremendous forum for meeting old friends,
making new contacts and for business.”
Highlights included a special get-together
of K3 and K4 to celebrate their 10th graduation
anniversary, a reception at HHL hosted by Dean
Professor Dr. Hans Wiesmeth, and a tour of the
Porsche facilities to see the new Panamera
production line. Twenty-one current HHL
students were invited to join the graduates in an
effort to connect the “old” Diploma classes with

HHL news: What does the HHL alumni
network mean to you?
I met my husband at HHL. So this “special
network” will hopefully last a lifetime. We are
also still in contact with many of our fellow
students and the HHL Alumni Homecoming
is a good reason to come back to Leipzig
to meet them and talk about the “good old
days” – and of course there are many more
things to come back to in this great city.
HHL news: What is the smartest piece of
advice you ever received?
Do not rely on your strengths only but also
allow for weaknesses in your job. You will
only stay trustworthy if you admit that you
have made a mistake or that you do not
know something.

Our son Valentin (4 months) immediately bonded
with the alumni and current HHL students.
It seems like he is enjoying HHL as well – the
next generation of academics is guaranteed!”
HHL staff and professors were present to
catch up with everyone during the evening’s
Alumni Dinner. While the intended tour of HHL
Executive on Saturday did not take place due to
a long night out on the town enjoyed by many
alumni (just like in the good old days), a brunch
on Sunday completed the weekend. A big
thank-you goes to HHL, HHL Alumni e. V.,
and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) who hosted
and sponsored this year’s Homecoming.
We also want to thank HHL’s faculty and staff
who gave their time to make this weekend a
memorable one. The planning process for
Homecoming 2010 has already started and
we are eager to incorporate your ideas and
suggestions. If you would like to become the

HHL’s active alumni are organized into eleven
chapters around the world, and many interesting
chapter meetings took place in 2009. One of these
was the London Chapter’s attendance of a reception
at the German Embassy hosted by the City of Leipzig
in celebration of 20 years since the Fall of the Wall.
Leipzig artist Neo Rauch gave an exclusive exhibition
of some of his works and artists from the Opera
Leipzig performed. The Frankfurt Chapter also had
an eventful year. After hiking through vineyards
earlier in the year, the chapter was supported by
Professor Dr. Torsten Wulf during a meeting with
a journalist from Süddeutsche Zeitung who is
researching alumni networks at private business
schools. This was a welcome opportunity to demonstrate that the alumni network is growing.
In 2010, the Frankfurt Chapter is planning to meet
on a regular basis. Currently, they are organizing
several program highlights in the field of fine dining
and wine tasting, cultural events as well as
after-work events e.g. with Deutsche Bank.
At the moment, we are in the process of establishing
a chapter in India and also in the Benelux countries.

The first 100 days in
HHL’s full-time MBA Program
Driving down a lone desert highway not far
from Roswell, New Mexico, USA, the only
company I had was the fabled presence of
alien stories that are so famous in these
parts. Little did I know that in only seven
months time I would be stepping off of a
plane half a world away in Leipzig, Germany,
for an 18-month MBA adventure at HHL. To
make a very long story very short that is ex-
actly what happened. And now after 100
days here at HHL I can’t be any happier. Almost daily I learn something new. Not only
from my classes but also from my classmates. I still find myself impressed by the quality
and international breadth of the students
here. From learning calculus from Ugandan
Lydia Nakayenze and Indian Adarsh Adula or
being taught the basic principles of what a
“ln” is by fellow American Jay Crouch (still not
sure on this one – some kind of logarithm or
something). I have also discovered the
finer principles of financial calculators from
our resident calculator guru, Dima Dizhevskiy
(who also collects beer bottles interestingly
enough). Moreover, fun has also been no
stranger here. I have had the pleasure of an
interesting Schnitzeljagd on one of our first
days here. I have golfed with good friends like
Jeff Tomer, kegelbahned with others, attended the opera with our culture club FAUST
and played some poker with friends like Paul
Erdman from HHL’s M.Sc. Program. Though
the classes are hard, I suffer no doubt that I
will leave HHL much more prepared to fulfill
my career goals than I have ever been. I see
a future rich not only with opportunity but
also with a network of close friends with
whom I will enjoy a lifetime of friendship. I never would have thought that lonely desert road
back in New Mexico would lead here. Maybe
the aliens had something to do with it.

From theory to practice: How HHL’s parttime MBA Program helps me in my job
My motivation to start a part-time MBA at the
end of 2007 was based on the fact that as a
marketing manager and board member of a
business unit of a multinational company
since 2006, I had been confronted with management issues that were new to me. I had a
strong background in marketing, but some of
the financial and production issues discussed in monthly management meetings
were slightly mysterious to me.
I chose HHL’s MBA Program because of the
excellent ratings, and the interpersonal at-
mosphere in the MBA department convinced
me right from the start. The program seemed
to fit both the needs of my position at the
time and my ambition for the future.
Over the last two years, it has proven to be
the right decision. Every course I have taken
has made me more secure in business situations and discussions. I have been able to
use concepts and theories from class in my
daily work, and vice versa: I have been able
to judge theories encountered during class in
terms of their practicality. Last but not least, it

has been a pleasure to work with my classmates. My fellow students’ different backgrounds and jobs have given rise to enriching
discussions in class again and again. The
whole MBA Program has been a very interesting journey, which has helped me better understand many areas of business – and
become a better marketing manager.

Global Immersion Trip to Shanghai

In late September 2009, at the end of our
two-year part-time MBA Program, the Global
Immersion Seminar led us to Shanghai, P.R.
China, for a week. In a nutshell: It was an outstanding, ambitious and successful trip in
every respect!
During the introductory seminar, we discussed China’s history and its economy, and
we received insights into the industries and
markets of the companies we would be visiting over the upcoming days: Walt Disney
Steamboat Venture Capital, Shanghai New
International Expo Centre (SNIEC), Roland
Berger Strategy Consultants, and Philips Innovation Campus. We wondered again and
again what is the secret of the impressive
Chinese growth, even in times of economic
crisis. Is the political system in contradiction
to the Chinese economy? Will China dominate the world some day? How can competitive advantages be maintained for German
joint venture partners? How can technological know-how be safeguarded? Furthermore, two seminars held by professors of
Tongji University Shanghai and China Europe

When you start your studies at HHL
“Problem Solving and Communication (PaC)”
is one of the first courses you attend. Already
the first lecture makes you realize that in contrast to other, knowledge-based, subjects
PaC aims at teaching a structured approach
to face problems that have to be solved. The
course, taught by Dr. Stephan Stubner, does
not only practice the structured breakdown
of a problem into smaller tasks but also trains
the skill to give interesting but professional
presentations of solutions. Especially students who come from universities that focus
on theoretical knowledge rather than practical know-how really benefit from this lecture.
The topics of the main presentation are either
real-life scenarios or even inquiries to HHL by
public or private institutions. If you talk to
“advanced” HHL students they will continuously confirm that the methods taught in the
course really help to face problems during
your Master’s thesis or any other important
assignment.

HHL’s Doctoral Program – a success story

It’s a story of constant growth: 94 students
are currently enrolled in HHL’s Doctoral Program and 80 students have graduated with
the title of “Dr. rer. oec.” over the years.
This summer, 60 students registered for
HHL’s Doctoral Program Summer School,
which is a record participation so far. The
Summer School took place July 13-17,
2009, and centered on “Empirical and Quantitative Methods in Business Research.” Professor Leslie Hodder, Ph.D. and Professor
Patrick E. Hopkins, Ph.D., two renowned experts from Kelley School of Business (Indiana
University, USA), and Professor Dr. Niklas
Wagner from the University of Passau in Bavaria agreed to come and talk as guest lecturers, focusing on international accounting
and finance. In addition, Professor Dr. Torsten Wulf (HHL) and Dr. Tobias Raffel (Roland
Berger Strategy Consultants) reflected on the
topic from a scenario planning perspective,
while Professor Dr. Manfred Kirchgeorg
(HHL) and Thomas Wimmer (Brunswick
Group) added valuable insights into managing corporate reputation. During the social
events, including a sightseeing tour and a
barbeque, students were able to get to know
Leipzig and to network with each other.

As part of the HHL Summer School 2009, the
Chair of Accounting and Auditing organized an
accounting colloquium on July 17, 2009, to give
doctoral students the chance to present their
current research projects. Professor Leslie Hodder
and Professor Patrick E. Hopkins from the
renowned Kelley School of Business, Indiana
University, were invited as special guests for the
event. Presenters included doctoral students from
the University of Technology, Sydney as well as
from HHL. The colloquium provided a way of
stimulating useful doctoral research and enhanced
the network of international contacts among
younger accounting researchers.

met at HHL on October 22 and
23, 2009, to discuss the latest developments of the International
Financial Reporting Standards
(IFRS). The seminar offered a unique opportunity to present accounting research and to
learn what colleagues at other universities in
the region are doing. 30 participants enjoyed
two interesting and challenging days at HHL
and in the City of Leipzig. The Chair of Accounting and Auditing is looking forward to
hosting the 2nd Doctoral Seminar at HHL in
2010.

work is not made easier
by the fact that the
standards and interpretations issued by the
International Accounting Standards Board (IASB)
are often un-didactic and the original texts are
only available in English. The German textbook
“Bilanzierung nach IFRS” by ZÜLCH/HENDLER will
be helpful to German-speaking IFRS users in their
daily work with the IASB regulations. The IFRS are
didactically presented and explained. In addition to
a basic and concise introduction to IFRS in the
European context as well as to the purposes and
principles of IFRS accounting, this textbook
explains the accounting of main items in a IFRS

Simon Güth joined the HHL Chair of Accounting
and Auditing in November 2009.
He graduated from Frankfurt School of
Finance and Management, where he
received his Master of Science (M.Sc.),
majoring in Banking/Finance and
Accounting. He studied in cooperation with
KfW Bankengruppe and gained additional
practical experience through internships
with HypoVereinsbank AG and Deutsche
Bank Securities Inc. in New York City.
Since July 2008, he has been working
as a Project Manager in the Structured
Finance Department at KfW, and will
continue to do so in half-yearly rotation
with his work at HHL.

Need for information on BilMoG
On October 5, 2009, the Leipziger Gesprächskreis
Rechnungslegung und Prüfung e. V. (LGK) together
with Ernst & Young GmbH Leipzig organized an
information seminar concerning the latest
changes in German GAAP. More than 100 accountants, consultants, auditors and students
took the opportunity to find out about the various changes in accounting regulations which
come into effect in 2010. In a first lecture, Dr.
Peter Oser, head of Ernst & Young’s national office in Stuttgart, presented the most relevant
accounting problems and gave useful hints
concerning their solution. After this, Arnim
Schiffmann, head of Ernst & Young’s office in
Leipzig, discussed aspects of corporate governance with the participants. Finally, Professor
Dr. Henning Zülch summed up the results and
the next steps companies should take when
preparing for the new German GAAP. “We
found this seminar highly valuable because now
we know how to face next year’s GAAP challenges,” one participant said.

Business ideas for a modern healthcare system

On October 29 and 30, 2009, HHL’s Center
for Healthcare Management (CHM) held the
first HHL Healthcare Challenge in cooperation with the World Conference on Regenerative Medicine at the Congress Center Leipzig. The Challenge was supported by DAK
health insurance, Sana Kliniken AG and Ecorium GmbH. Professor Dr. Hans Wiesmeth,
who holds the IHK Chair of Applied Economic Theory to which the organizing CHM is
affiliated, was impressed by the business
plans: “Many of the ideas presented at the
Challenge have the potential to tackle some
of the most pressing problems in our Ger-
man healthcare system, such as increasing
costs or the lack of medical provision in rural
areas.” We asked Dr. med. Christian Elsner,
Head of CHM, about the HHL Healthcare
Challenge 2009.
HHL news: What was the aim of this
business plan competition?
Dr. med. Christian Elsner: We aimed to
bring “entrepreneurs” together with
“enablers”. We had start-up ideas in three
healthcare contexts, as well as venture
capitalists, clinics, payors, politicians and
healthcare industry representatives at the
HHL Healthcare Challenge. Our entrepreneurs spoke to the jury and the expert panel
in our sessions and were also able to join a
panel discussion and a social event at the
Leipzig Porsche plant – contact time and
informal exchange were maximized.
HHL news: Eight pre-selected business
ideas were presented at the Challenge.
What was the winning idea about?
Dr. med. Christian Elsner: The winner
won over the jury thanks to a very simple
but striking idea about rotating specialists
through local doctors’ practices in rural
areas. The business plan also incorporated
educational aspects, logistics and the setup
of the practices. The idea addressed one of
the major problems in healthcare and thus
conformed with the “problem mission”
of the Challenge.
HHL news: You also had a panel
discussion on the challenges facing
the German healthcare system.
Why do innovations come onto the
German market so late?
Dr. med. Christian Elsner: Innovations in
healthcare take an extremely long time to
come to market due to regulation, high
safety concerns and intensive testing, which
normally lasts more than 10 years. That
limits the number of entrepreneurs who are
able to provide products. In Germany, there
is also a very high selection over payors in
place. But that’s not always bad – other
markets have a much higher rate of “blind
innovations”, which do not create any
market value.
HHL news: Three studies were presented
for the first time at the Challenge.
Were there any striking results?
Dr. med. Christian Elsner: We had
interesting, unpublished work as the opener
for each of the three sessions. Wieselhuber
& Partner and Ecorium GmbH published a
compass on the “cooperation-ability” of
every German hospital, IMedo published a
study on patient marketing, and the CHM
together with HHL’s Center for IT-based
Logistics Leipzig (CITLOG) presented
research on the penetration and effects of
an innovation in the German market for
heart failure patients.

creativity as a means of creating value for the company.” The discussion was initiated by an enthralling talk

Deutschland GmbH. By offering intuitive examples from everyday life, he
outlined why creativity is fundamental to the
success of Google and how the company manages to maintain high levels of creativity within

demonstrated that creativity truly functions as a
value driver across different companies and
branches. Two findings are of particular interest: First, creativity is not a function of age.
As long as there is an affirmative working environment, creative people maintain their creative
energies throughout their entire life. Second,
customers are a major source of creativity.
Companies that manage to actively involve their
customers in the process of improving and developing goods are more likely to achieve a
competitive advantage in the marketplace. The

The impact of the economic crisis
on communication budgets
In the sixth year of their cooperation, the Chair of
Marketing Management together with the Live
Communication agency Uniplan GmbH & Co. KG
conducted a survey on the impact of the economic
crisis on the communication strategies of German
companies. 404 leading corporations in nine key

sectors were interviewed and the data analyzed. The
results revealed that after years of growth, the
expenditures for communication were cut severely in
2009 due to the macroeconomic development,
particularly in those sectors which are most affected
by the financial crisis. Asked about how long they
think the downturn will last, the majority of the
companies polled said they expect the end by the
middle of 2010. However, the Live Trends 2009/10
study shows that industry opinion varies considerably
regarding the recession’s intensity and duration. It is
mainly above-the-line advertising and live communication instruments that are affected by the budget
cuts. This development is surprising but clearly shows
that the economic situation is pushing a paradigm
shift which has long since become apparent. While
one-way communication is becoming less relevant,
two-way dialog is gaining in importance. The
Internet is taking off and will substitute above-the-line
advertising as the new key medium within the next
five to seven years, according to the study results.

superior by German consumers: this is one
key insight from a recent research project
conducted by McKinsey & Company and the
HHL Chair of Marketing Management. The
representative survey of 1,500 consumers in
retail banking, telco (mobile phones) and
consumer electronics further shows that
consumers increasingly use so-called social
media such as online consumer forums,
communities and product review websites to
inform themselves about products and ser-
vices before purchase; one in five consumers
will use social media as their dominant information channel prior to their next purchase in
the product categories analyzed. The results
highlight the ongoing inter-mixture of sales
and communication channels and the growing autonomy of consumers in the purchase
process – leading to new challenges for
marketing and multichannel management.
In the upcoming months, the joint research
project by McKinsey & Company and the
Chair of Marketing Management will address
further questions of multichannel consumer
behavior: among other topics, a direct link
between channel choice and perceived
channel quality will be established, the
sector-specific relative influence of selected
determinants on channel choice behavior
will be ascertained, and practical implications for multichannel players and managers

HHL professor teaches first course
in newly launched IMBA Program
have made the program one of the most influential in China, ranking among the top 10 in the table of “Most Influential MBA Programs in China,”
and number 1 on the league of MBA programs
with the highest potential. To date, over 1,300
students have graduated with MBA degrees
from the school. The graduates now work in
many different parts of China and play key roles
in national economic development and enterprise management. During their stay in Lanzhou,
both Professor Vilks and Mr. Yuan taught core
courses (Managerial Economics and Principles
of Management respectively) in the International
MBA (IMBA) Program.

In September 2009, Professor Dr. Arnis Vilks,
Chair of Microeconomics at HHL, was a member of the HHL delegation invited by Lanzhou
University as honored guests to celebrate its
100th anniversary. Mr. Chun Yuan, Research
Associate and himself a native of Lanzhou,
accompanied Professor Vilks during this stay.
Located in the capital of Gansu Province, Lanzhou University is one of the oldest and most
prestigious universities in western China. HHL
and the Management School at Lanzhou University established a partnership when Professor
Vilks was Dean of HHL, and have exchanged
students since 2005. The Management School
at Lanzhou University launched its MBA Program in 1997. Twelve years of development
The IMBA Program was launched only in September 2009. All the courses are taught in English, and the program is supported by international guest lecturers. Professor Vilks had the
honor of teaching the very first course in the
program, and of being the first foreign visiting
teacher in the program. Other visiting faculty
from business schools in the USA, France, Italy,
India, and New Zealand will follow.
Asked about his teaching experience, Professor Vilks says: “The 44 Chinese students I had
in my class were very disciplined and hard-working. But what made my Lanzhou experience
particularly pleasant was their kindness – they
organized sightseeing tours for me, gave me a
wonderful bouquet of flowers on “teachers’
day,” and they even invited me for a farewell
dinner. I love Chinese food. Wo ai zhen
Zhongguo cai!”
How do multinational corporations
in India address CSR issues?
Poverty is among the most pressing global issues –
one billion people are still living on less than one
dollar per day. The Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) developed by the United Nations set out a
path for addressing the economic, social and
environmental dimensions of poverty, expecting not
only governments of developing countries but also
private sector companies operating in those
countries to play a vital role in alleviating poverty.
Multinational Corporations (MNCs), in particular,
contribute to development to a large extent. Their
social impact through business activities and their
commitment to the communities are far from
negligible, but all too often they are not sufficiently
visible to the global public. Part of the research
focus of Martina Wuttke, Research Associate at the
Chair of Microeconomics, is on the social impact of
MNCs in India, in particular on how these
companies directly and indirectly address the
economic, social and environmental dimensions of
poverty through Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR). In order to gain a deeper insight into the CSR
picture in India and to strengthen the empirical
evidence for CSR as a business case, Martina Wuttke
conducted a study in India in July 2009, including
interviews with CSR directors of Indian and
international global players and leading NGOs. The
outcome of this study in the form of several case
studies will be an academic contribution to the
attainment of the MDGs by shedding light onto
current CSR practice and its impact on poverty
alleviation as a starting point for further social and
political action.

Outstanding HHL Diploma thesis about “Monetary policy of
the Fed and the ECB during the financial crisis”
The Federal Reserve and the European Central
Bank reacted to the financial crisis with an unprecedented “policy of easy money” and several
unconventional measures. More and more people are concerned that inflation might as a result
rise to unprecedentedly high levels once economic growth accelerates again. In his Diploma
thesis, Phillip Rädle (K23) compares the measures taken by both central banks during the
crisis and analyzed the consequences for their

balance sheets. He concludes that differences in
the measures taken can be attributed predominantly to different monetary instruments – the
monetary instruments of the Fed may in part be
“outdated.” The Fed’s balance sheet worsened
with its immense buying of illiquid assets. Exiting
the policy of monetary easing may be much
more difficult for the Fed than for the ECB. Consequently, inflation risks in the U.S. may be higher than in the Euro area if the exit is not success-
HHL news: The main goal of your courses
at HHL is to promote the development of
rigorous economic reasoning. What exactly
is the meaning of this term and why should
today‘s manager know about it?
Professor Dr. Wilhelm Althammer:
Economic reasoning involves the scientific
method of economics, which uses abstract
(and often simple) models to understand and
explain how a complex real world operates.
This modeling approach forces you to
structure your thinking and to disclose your
assumptions. Students are sometimes
confused by the variety of models they can
choose from, and the art of economic
modeling is to decide which assumptions to
make and on which aspect of the problem
to focus. This method has an advantage: in
discussions about economic policy, problem
solutions are sometimes presented as if they

ful. Whether the exit is successful or not will
largely depend on the effectiveness of the available instruments to reduce or at least control the
enormous growth in the liquidity of commercial
banks. The exceptional Diploma thesis by Phillip
Rädle shows a thorough analysis of the balance
sheets and a very strong link with the current
economic situation.
HHL news: Could you please give a
current example?
Professor Dr. Wilhelm Althammer: There is
a fine example from my lecture in tax policy.
If you follow the discussion on tax reforms
and tax reductions, the hope is often
expressed that lower taxes might have a
positive effect on tax revenues by changing
incentives, the so-called Laffer Effect. Of
course, this hope allows painful cuts in
expenditure to be avoided or the announcement of an increase in public debt to be
averted. In a model analysis, the critical
elasticities can be identified, and comparing
these elasticities with empirical estimates
shows that a Laffer Effect will only happen at
marginal tax rates that are far beyond the
actual tax rates. Therefore, any decrease in
tax rates will unambiguously decrease tax
revenues.
HHL news: What are the main challenges
of today’s international financial system?
Professor Dr. Wilhelm Althammer:
The governments of the major industrial
countries have avoided a meltdown of the
financial system by intervening massively in
financial markets and by flooding the
markets with liquidity. I see two main
challenges for monetary policy and for

financial market regulation. Monetary policy
needs to find an exit option out of the
excess in liquidity, and to find it early enough
to avoid inflationary pressure yet late enough
not to disrupt the recovery of the economy.
In the field of financial market regulation, a
new international architecture has to be
found to handle the problem of systemic
risks in order to avoid the bankruptcy of
large banks and countries. In this field, I see
only minimal progress, and I have the feeling
that the political discussion isn’t focusing on
the right problems. It is not so much the
compensation of bank managers that has
caused the problems, it’s regulations that
neglected the fact that markets do not work
properly with asymmetric information, a
situation typical for financial markets.
HHL news: Students in your courses have
to solve a couple of quizzes. What are
they about?
Professor Dr. Wilhelm Althammer:
The quizzes are just the application of a
basic law of economic reasoning, namely
that people respond to incentives. Previously, students started to learn the material in
my courses shortly before the exam, and
this was an inferior strategy. I introduced
quizzes containing simple multiple choice
questions on the topics of the last lecture to
give them incentives to work more continuously. And it works: Even students in
courses where I did not intend to use
quizzes now ask for them.

Summer School for Advanced Econometrics in Copenhagen
was very expansionary during the crisis, one
may be able to get an idea of the inflationary
pressures that arise in the future once US
growth takes off again.
In August 2009, I participated in the three-week
“Summer School for Advanced Econometrics –
The Cointegrated VAR (CVAR) Model” at the
University of Copenhagen. The course was very
intense and demanding but, as the teachers
said repeatedly in the last week of the course:
“You learned a lot”. The summer school was
very well structured – a perfect mixture of
theory and empirical applications. In the
mornings, we had theory classes (taught by
Soeren Johansen and Katarina Juselius), in
which the theoretical foundations of the CVAR
model were investigated.
The CVAR model encompasses two important
econometric terms: Cointegration means that
there is a stationary linear relation between
non-stationary variables (think of a drunk and
a drunken dog staggering around but never
drifting too far apart because they are connected
by a dog leash). If there is evidence of cointegration, we can interpret the linear combination as
the long-run relationship between the variables.
VAR stands for Vector Autoregressive Model. In
simple terms, it means that “everything depends
on everything and its own history”.
In my project, I analyzed the stability of money
demand in the US using the CVAR model.
Based on this analysis, I then made so-called
“predictive regressions” to assess how well
my estimates may help to predict future
inflation rates. Given that US monetary policy

were given “intuitive” lectures and empirical
exercises. After that, we had to work on our own
empirical project; first under the supervision of
the four lecturers and, later on, mostly until
midnight, on our own. As it was a very tough
schedule, there was not much time left for
going out with the other students and enjoying
Copenhagen. But it was great to meet so many
different people from all over the world – central
bankers from Kenya, Australia and the European
Central Bank, Ph.D. students from Canada and
the US, and – perhaps not surprisingly – many
researchers from Scandinavia. Being under the
same time pressure and having similar difficulties with your projects also welds a group
together.

This year, the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship conference G-Forum was hosted by the
University of Leipzig. G-Forum is the leading
German conference on entrepreneurship and
family businesses and has established itself
as a forum for both researchers and practitioners in the field. After passing a doubleblind review process, Professor Dr. Torsten
Wulf, Dr. Stephan Stubner, W. Henning Blarr
and Corinna Lindow had the opportunity to
present three research papers at the conference: “Unternehmernachfolge in Familienunternehmen – Untersuchungsmodell zur
Analyse von Problemfeldern bei der Übergabe der Führungsrolle,” “The Performance Implications of Fit between Strategic Behavior
and Organizational Structure in Family Firms,”
and “The Strategy-Performance Linkage and
Organizational Ambidexterity in Small to Medium-sized Enterprises.” Thanks to these
presentations and the following discussions,
we were again able to underline HHL’s image

as an entrepreneurial business school and
sharpen our profile in family business research. Among the scholars who attended
our presentations were experts from different
universities, including Professor Dr. Peter Witt
(TU Dortmund), Professor Dr. Malte Brettel
(RWTH Aachen) and Dr. Carolin Bock (TU
München).
In addition to the G-Forum, our research on
family businesses was also accepted for presentation at the leading international entrepreneurship conference BCERC – Babson
Entrepreneurship Research Conference, and
at the annual meeting of ifera, the International Family Enterprise Research Association.

for Scenario Planning:
The Center for Scenario Planning at the Chair
of Strategic Management and Organization
was established in early 2009 in cooperation
with the global management consulting firm
Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. Its goal
is to become a leading think tank on scenario
planning and to foster research in this field.
We recently launched our website at http://
www.scenariomanagement.de. It contains
more background information on the center
and provides an overview of the services that
we provide. One essential part of our work at
the center concerns the ongoing extension
of a comprehensive scenario library. We constantly monitor, collect and analyze scenario
studies that are published worldwide. So far,
our database combines more than 250 recent scenario studies on the macro (global),
meso (regional/sectoral) and micro (company) levels that provide input for the development of our own scenarios for teaching and
for research. In addition, our partners at the
center can access the scenario database.
Another important service offered by the
center is an extensive scenario toolbox. It
contains summaries and application recommendations for existing and newly developed
tools used in scenario and long-range planning processes. Each tool is described and

HHL-Roland Berger approach to
scenario-based strategic planning
A first research-oriented outcome from the
Center for Scenario Planning is a new approach to scenario-based strategic planning.
Based on our experience teaching strategic
management and advising corporate clients
around the world, we have developed an innovative methodology that combines the benefits of scenario planning and strategic planning. The main contribution made by this
approach lies in increasing the flexibility of
strategic planning based on a structured sixstep process and a standardized tool set. In
the last few months, we have received very
positive feedback on this approach from
both our academic and corporate partners.

Presentations at leading
international management
conference AOM
With over 8,000 participants, the annual meeting
of the Academy of Management (AOM) is the
world’s biggest conference for management
research. In 2009, the conference was held in
Chicago August 7-11. The Chair of Strategic
Management and Organization was present with
two papers that passed the double-blind review
process. Dr. Stephan Stubner discussed “Private
Equity and Family Business – can investors add
to the success of former family firms?” in an
interactive paper session with experts on family
business research. The second paper, “Executive
Succession and Firm Performance – the Role
of Position-Specific Skills,” was presented by
Professor Dr. Torsten Wulf in front of an audience
of leading international scholars in the field of
executive succession, among them Professor
Don Hambrick, the acclaimed authority in this
research field. We were able to establish stronger
connections with him and his senior researchers.
After the conference we received valuable
feedback in a discussion of the full paper.
Doctoral research colloquium at
University of Erlangen-Nürnberg
At the invitation of the Department of Management at Friedrich-Alexander University in
Nuremberg headed by Professor Dr. Harald
Hungenberg, all staff members of the Chair
of Strategic Management and Organization
participated in a two-day doctoral research
colloquium on October 8 and 9, 2009. Over
30 researchers from the two chairs joined for
a “mini-conference” to present the current
status of their projects and to discuss their
approaches and findings with each other.
This highly interactive format enables doctoral
students to improve their research skills and
to network with other researchers in adjacent
fields. As the format gained very positive
feedback from the participants, we will continue
the colloquium in Leipzig. Invitations to the next
meeting in March have already been issued.

Successful project with the City of Leipzig
The Chair of Strategic Management and Organization regularly engages in projects to
support Leipzig and the region. In 2009, one
of these projects was undertaken in cooperation with the City of Leipzig and its Mayor
for Business, Economy and Employment, Uwe
Albrecht. In order to help the City of Leipzig
prepare for discussions with corporate and
private investors in the region, the Chair of
Strategic Management and Organization
initiated the development of a set of presentations that combine both a convincing communication approach and decision-enabling
hard facts that speak in favor of investment in
and around Leipzig. The presentations themselves were then developed by students in
our MSc4 class as the final assignment in the
course “Problem solving and Communication.” This course has been a cornerstone of
HHL education since its inception. It aims to
enable students to approach new problems
systematically, to develop solutions in a
structured way and to convincingly communicate solutions. The final presentations were
prepared for three potential investor groups:
logistics companies from the USA and the
UK, Russian companies in the energy and
environmental industries, and automotive
companies from Northern Italy. On November 4, 2009, the student teams presented
their results in front of representatives of the
City of Leipzig. Brigitte Brück from the City of
Leipzig said afterwards: “We are grateful to
the Chair and the students for the excellent
and very valuable presentations.” Furthermore, selected teams have been invited to
present their work in front of a larger
audience at the mayor’s office.

To enhance the research skills and publication
abilities of senior researchers, the chair regularly
organizes seminars on selected topics.
In November 2009, we invited Professor Anne
Huff, PhD, one of the most acclaimed scholars in the
management field, to lead a two-day intensive
workshop at HHL. Anne Huff is a founding
Director of the Advanced Institute of Management Research (AIM) and visiting professor at
the TUM Business School with a joint appointment at the Center for Advanced Teaching and
Learning in the Social Sciences at the University
of Colorado. She has also been on the faculty of
Cranfield School of Management and a visiting
Professor at London Business School as well
as president of the Academy of Management.
Professor Huff has published prolifically,
amongst others things about writing for
scholarly publications. With the support of and
in cooperation with the Center for Leading
Innovation and Cooperation (CLIC) at HHL,
of which she is an Academic Director, senior
researchers Professor Dr. Kathrin M. Möslein
and Dr. Marcus Kölling, Professor Dr. Torsten
Wulf, and Dr. Stephan Stubner met with Professor
Huff on November 2 and 3, 2009, to discuss
approaches for publication in leading management journals. In addition, we received valuable
feedback on selected research projects.

New family business study in cooperation
with Alphazirkel: Staying successful during
the financial crisis
Over 200 German family-owned companies
participated in a study conducted in Summer
2009 by the Chair of Strategic Management
and Organization in cooperation with Munichbased Alphazirkel – Forum for Family Entrepreneurs.
The study, co-authored by Professor Dr. Torsten Wulf, Dr. Stephan Stubner, W. Henning
Blarr and Corinna Lindow, was designed to
assess the impact of the financial crisis on
family businesses in Germany and to identify
success factors for surviving the latest downturn. The results show that family-owned
companies are indeed affected by the crisis,
but that the impact is not as severe as has
been indicated by the press in recent months.
Surprisingly, for example, most participants
stated that access to financial capital had not
worsened significantly.
It also transpired that family-owned businesses often have a very consistent management style which enables them not only to
deal with the threats posed by the crisis, but
also to use the opportunities that it presents.
In summary, family businesses in the study
have generally managed the crisis success-

fully so far and highlight a positive outlook

HHL Discourse – it’s all about logistics
CITLOG presents the first results of
their healthcare study
Participants at the HHL discourse “Mehr Wert Logistik – Zukunftsfähige Logistiksysteme als Erfolgsgarant”
On October 7, 2009, an HHL Discourse entitled
“Mehr Wert Logistik – Zukunftsfähige Logistiksysteme als Erfolgsgarant” took place, initiated
by Professor Dr. Iris Hausladen, Heinz Nixdorf
Chair of IT-based Logistics. The high-level panel members discussing strategies, concepts
and experience in the field of logistics were

Schenker Deutschland AG), Michael Friedrich
(Head of sales subsidiary, Mercedes-Benz Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH), Markus Kopp (CEO,
Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG), Dr. Thomas
Papke (Managing Director, AeroLogic GmbH)
and Dieter Schliek (Head of Steering, Production, Controlling, WPS, BMW AG Leipzig). The
panel members showed the audience numerous examples of how the logistics region
around Leipzig is prospering, and demon-
strated that logistics is so much more than simply moving goods from A to B. The panel
agreed that efficient logistics is an important
competitive factor and a key to success. The
drivers of current developments within the logistics field were also highlighted during the
discussion. In addition to globalization, the key
word was “sustainability,” not only in the ecological sense of reducing CO2 emissions and
saving fuel consumption thanks to new aircraft
and trucks, but also regarding the economic
and social aspects, such as job security. All the
panel members stressed that these drivers
were fundamental to their perception of the logistics business. The HHL Discourse was
organized by the Heinz Nixdorf Chair of ITbased Logistics and supported by the Heinz
Nixdorf Foundation and the Leipzig Foundation
for Innovation and Technology Transfer.
How to handle the logistics
of Saxon green peas
Research confirms that more and more regional products are landing in consumers’
shopping baskets. Even the big German retail companies are trying to make their product lines more attractive and competitive by
including more regional products. This inspired the Heinz Nixdorf Chair of IT-based
Logistics and the Center for IT-based Logistics Leipzig (CITLOG) to analyze the current
situation regarding the distribution of regional
products in Western Saxony. In close cooperation with the Regionalmanagement Westsachsen (Regional Management of Western
Saxony) and the DEHOGA Sachsen – Regionalverband Leipzig e. V. (German Hotel and
Restaurant Association Saxony – Leipzig Regional Association), two different market par-
ticipants (regional producer/caterer) were the
focus of research conducted from July
through September 2009. They were asked
about their current situation regarding the
distribution and procurement of regional products. Focal point of the project, funded by
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Leipzig
(IHK zu Leipzig), was the identification of problem fields.
The findings of the joint project show very clearly the shortfalls within the logistics structures
and a big potential for improvement is seen. A
workshop for Retail Logistics is planned in the
near future to foster the business activities of
small and medium sized companies within the
agriculture and food industry in Saxony.

At the Healthcare Challenge 2009, organized by
HHL on October 29-30, the Center for IT-based
Logistics Leipzig (CITLOG) presented the first
results of their Healthcare Study regarding the
quality of medical care in the area of chronic heart
failure. The study is done in cooperation with the
Center for Healthcare Management (CHM) and the
company Ecorium GmbH, which kindly provided the
necessary database.
As the first step of the study the technology of
telemonitoring and its effect on the quality of
medical care was analyzed, but in contrast to already published case scenarios the medical data
was connected with geographical ones. This way
a methodology was developed, which could, setting
a few parameters, easily identify potential regions,
where a launch of the technology is promising.
CITLOG working group
“Evaluation of the costs and
benefits of IT-Logistics applications” makes progress
Started in early 2009 with the aim of developing a
concept for evaluating the costs and benefits of
IT-Logistics applications, the working group is now
in the analysis phase. There, both theoretical
concepts and practical experiences are researched
to build up a fundament for the concept.
While on the theoretical side several already
existing concepts to measure the value and costs
of specific IT applications are analyzed regarding
their advantages and disadvantages, the practical
side concentrates more on individual IT-Logistics
solutions of the IT providers, participating in the
working group, and their realization in the customer
companies. Here, the problems of implementing
the applications and the specific value for the
customer companies are examined in detail and
later on, the first versions of the concept will be
tested concerning their practical handling.

Bremenports logisticstalk in Leipzig
“Sea and air cargo infrastructure – same problems, different solutions?” This was the
question discussed by Dierk Näther (Managing Director of Leipzig/Halle Airport) and Jan
Gelderland (Managing Director of North Sea
Terminal Bremerhafen GmbH & Co.) at the
Leipzig Porsche Plant on October 19, 2009,
in a forum organized by bremenports GmbH
& Co. KG in cooperation with the Center for
IT-based Logistics Leipzig (CITLOG), BVL –
German Logistics Association, and Netzwerk
Logistik Leipzig-Halle.
Approximately 100 guests from the logistics industry, consulting, and academia
responded to the invitation to attend the
panel discussion on challenges and concepts of infrastructural facilities and transport as competitive advantages for airand seaports.

set out for a visit to Audencia Nantes – École de
Management. The main goals for her time in Nantes
were to exchange experience with her counterparts,
and also to teach the latest logistics concepts to the
M.Sc. class studying for
a master degree in
Supply Chain Management. Several joint
research topics were
identified during
discussions with Assistant Professor Dr. Joe
Miemczyk, who oversees this special program.
During a lunch-time seminar for professors and
research associates, Professor Hausladen presented
the topic “IT-based Logistics – Business Process
Management and Benefit Evaluation.” The teaching
covered an introduction to the field of Logistics
Management as well as to Logistics Concepts
applied in the Automotive Industry.

Field project: The use of Web 2.0
as a knowledge management tool
Between April and July 2009, a group of five
Diploma students from the class K23 under
the supervision of the Chair of Economics
and Information Systems conducted a field
project for SV SparkassenVersicherung AG,
the third largest public insurance company in
Germany and a market leader in the field of
house insurance in Germany.
For a company of this size running a variety
of projects at the same time, the issue of
knowledge management is one of the key
factors in successful process management
and efficient workload.
In this context, the main task for the HHL
team was to investigate the use of Web 2.0
as a knowledge management tool and to formulate exact proposals for implementing it,
taking into account the specific demands
and needs of SV SparkassenVersicherung.
First, the students conducted a detailed evaluation of knowledge management systems
currently available on the market. In a second
step, the team applied the “as-is analysis”
method to become acquainted with special
characteristics of the company and to evaluate the current status of knowledge management at SV SparkassenVersicherung. In addition to this, an online survey and personal
interviews with employees were carried out
by the team to identify gaps in the existing
knowledge management process. Combining the results from the first two stages of
their work, the student team was then able to
filter out, from a vast offering of products on
the market, three knowledge management
software products which meet the needs of
the company and, furthermore, might improve efficiency of project management processes. In the final stage, using cost-benefit
analysis, the HHL team selected an optimal
software solution for SV SparkassenVersicherung. It was a stimulating experience for
both the students and the project partner.
The project was in fact such a success that
the students were offered the chance to be
involved in a follow-up project in the area of
knowledge management for other departments of SV SparkassenVersicherung.
New staff
Alberto Chullen joined the Chair of Economics
and Information Systems in August 2009.
He is an alumnus of the class MSc2 at HHL,
where he obtained his Master of Science
degree majoring in Finance and Marketing
in July 2009. Before coming to HHL, he
graduated in Business Management and
Finance at the Universidad San Ignacio
(Peru), and spent a year at CBS (Denmark).
In 2008, Chullen also spent a term at the
Grenoble Graduate School of Business
(France). His future research will be focused
on Quantum Decision Theory and
Cooperative Game Theory.

Computer Science 2010: “Service Science –
New Perspectives for Computer Science”
Five universities, including HHL, are organizing
one of the largest computer science conferences in Germany: “Computer Science 2010”
will take place in Leipzig from September 27 to
October 2, 2010. The focus of the conference
will be on service research, and specifically on
how computer science can contribute to service industry research through the deployment

1st European MBA Career Fair
All the business schools attending are
AACSB and/or EQUIS accredited and operate under the aegis of these internationally
respected accrediting agencies. The career
fair offers companies opportunities for meeting MBA graduates in workshops, preselected personal interviews, company presentations and an open forum. About 250 MBA
students with multicultural origins and diverse academic backgrounds such as engineering, business studies and social sciences are expected to participate in the fair.

On April 26, 2010, the 1st European MBA Career Fair will take place in Berlin. The fair is a
development of the MBA Career Fair that was
held last year for the sixth time and continues
to represent an excellent chance for companies to recruit international MBA graduates
from leading European business schools, in-
cluding Audencia Nantes (France), GISMA
Business School, Goethe Business School,
HHL – Leipzig Graduate School of Management (all Germany), MIP Politecnico di Milano
(Italy) and Warwick Business School (United

The 1st European MBA Career Fair is also
part of the new collaboration between
Audencia Nantes, HHL and MIP, the three
business schools which formed the JOINUS
business education alliance in Paris in April

networking possibilities and a collaborative
alumni network, and they will also better

Placement statistics for HHL’s full-time M.Sc. Program
In summer 2009, the second class of the
Master Program in Management (MSc2) graduated from HHL. Its placement pattern is
quite similar to that of the previous class.
Consulting continues to be the most attractive employer branch with 47.1%.

However, this year the banking and financial
sector was the second most popular choice
among graduates of MSc2, with 17.6% starting their career in this area. With 11.8%
each, the industrial sector shared third place
with start-ups and family businesses as well
as postgraduate programs.

Despite crisis – wide spectrum
of company presentations at HHL
In Fall 2009, HHL’s Career Service organized
a series of special opportunities for students
to meet with potential employers. Ten corporate presentations, workshops and recruiting
events were held by high-ranking company
representatives, including a number of HHL
alumni. They were followed by an informal
get-together to provide an additional chance
for an intensive exchange between students
and representatives from the corporate
world.
While HHL alumni currently working at
McKinsey & Company, Inc. gave HHL students useful advice from first-hand experience in preparation for applying to consulting firms in their “Application Training,”
representatives from The Boston Consulting
Group GmbH provided an insight into the implications of the financial crisis and the consequent challenges for companies in their
presentation “Thriving in a Damaged Economy – Leadership in a (Post-)Crisis World.”
Another topic was the turnaround project in-
volving a well-known retail chain; this was the
focus of the presentation entitled “Customercentric Retailing – The Future of Retail” by
Roland Berger Strategy Consultants GmbH,
which was given by one of the consultants
and a representative from the client side.
In addition to consulting firms, financial
enterprises also presented themselves on
HHL’s campus as attractive employers. For
example, Deutsche Bank AG gave an
impressive overview of its huge variety of
business activities and the numerous career
opportunities available for students and graduates, while the investment banking division of Credit Suisse Securities (Europe) Limited presented a recent project dealing with
the investment of Qatar Holding LLC in
Volkswagen AG and Porsche Automobil

1st HHL Start-up Career Fair
Company presentations are an integral part
of life for students at HHL, providing an excellent opportunity to make contacts with
renowned companies and find out about career opportunities. In Fall 2009, HHL start-ups
had their first chance to present themselves
as employers at the 1st HHL Start-up Career
Fair. Six start-ups, imedo.de, JNB Healthlab/
flymedic, Lecturio, Playnik, SunCoal Industries and Team Europe Ventures, – all founded
by HHL alumni – visited HHL and provided
an insight into their day-to-day business, the
challenges they faced during the formation of
their companies and, of course, career opportunities for HHL students and graduates.
The second intention of the event organized
conjointly by Dr. Stephan Stubner, Director
of the Program for International Entrepreneurship and HHL’s Career Service, was to

founded by its graduates, HHL is one of the
premier incubators of future entrepreneurs.
After the presentations, HHL students were
able to network further with HHL entrepre-
neurs and to exchange business ideas during the get-together over a delicious barbecue and a few drinks. In view of the positive
response to the event among both students
and entrepreneurs, HHL is planning to hold
another HHL Start-up Career Fair in Spring
2010.

Interview
In 2008, Dr. Sebastian Siebert (K12) and his
colleague Dr. Fabian Labriola founded their
own company Fashionette. Being inspired by
a movie, they have since turned a passion
many women share into a successful business
model. HHL news interviewed Dr. Siebert.
HHL news: Your business idea seems to
be quite unusual. Please tell us: Who are
the people leasing Gucci handbags, for
instance, for one week?
Dr. Siebert: Our customers are fashion-conscious women who have a passion for luxury
accessories but lack the disposable income
to afford them. An average designer handbag
costs more than EUR 1,000, which is a lot of
money in our current economic climate.
Fashionette provides the opportunity to
access and enjoy more luxury accessories.
HHL news: You work together with other
HHL alumni. Which key competencies
possessed by HHL graduates do you
appreciate most?
Dr. Siebert: What I appreciate most is the
entrepreneurial spirit and high energy levels
of many HHL graduates. I think a positive
attitude that anything and everything is
possible is an important success factor for
start-ups with naturally limited resources.
This of course can be found in graduates at
all universities, but HHL gives a quality
assurance which reduces the risk of hiring
the wrong person.
HHL news: With more than 80 successful
start-ups, HHL has made a name for itself
as an academy for entrepreneurs. How
do you benefit from this network?
Dr. Siebert: Over the past few years, HHL has
created a network of entrepreneurs which is
truly unique in Germany. There is an active
exchange between founders and we try to
support each other, for example in connecting
with potential investors, employees or
cooperation partners. This also applies for
other HHL alumni who themselves are not
active as entrepreneurs. They can open doors
for us as a company and generate new
business opportunities. I believe that access
to this network is by far the most valuable
asset one can gain from studying at HHL.
HHL news: In one sentence: what makes
an internet start-up like yours successful?
Dr. Siebert: The ability to hire the right
people.
Brief news on entrepreneurs
VC firm Grazia Equity hosted Businessplan competition at HHL: The Grazia Equity Businessplan
Competition was hosted by VC firm Grazia Equity
at HHL in Spring 2009. This event has become a
tradition, this year being its seventh consecutive
year. Together with a diverse jury comprising entrepreneurs (Marcel Radzei [K5] from Billigflieger.de),
academics (Professor Dr. Peter Kesting from Aarhus
University) and VC investors (Jochen Klüppel from
Grazia Equity), HHL students and external partners
presented the business plans they had developed
over the previous months. Active support during this
time was provided by Smile.medibiz, especially by
Matthias Tischner (K21), and enabled by the Chamber
of Commerce and Industry Leipzig (IHK zu Leipzig).
Wirtschaftsbürgermeister of Leipzig new patron
of the HHL business plan seminar: Uwe Albrecht,
Mayor for Business, Economy and Employment in
Leipzig, has become the patron of the new rounds
of the HHL business plan seminar in 2010. We are
very happy to have his support, which highlights the
impact HHL students have on the regional economy.
New HHL start-ups: eCareer Internet: HHL alumnus Christopher Muhr (MSc2) recently co-founded
eCareer Internet. The company focuses on providing
a job portal for positions above EUR 50,000 annual
salary. With an intelligent matching service in the
backend, eCareer adds a new and interesting twist
to the market for job portals.
Fairix: HHL alumnus Philipp Legge (MSc2) cofounded this online shopping portal for sustainable products. The offerings range from electronics to cosmetics, from furniture to clothing.
The stated goal of fairix is to become the market
leader in Germany for sustainable trade.

Awards: An HHL alumnus is “Germany’s Mr. Startup”: Techcrunch is one of the most highly reputed
magazines in the start-up and tech-innovation
sphere. Besides many other activities, it regularly organizes popular entrepreneurship events
throughout the world. Recently, Techcrunch had a
feature on HHL alumnus Lukasz Gadowski (K12)
and named him “Germany’s Mr. Start-up.”
Playnik wins Internet World award 2009: The reputed publication Internet Business World awarded
the 2009 prize for the best start-up to Playnik, the
gaming company founded by HHL alumnus Malte
Paul (K10). Also among the 20 finalists was smava,
a micro-financing platform where HHL alumnus
Sebastian Rieschel (K11) is in the founding team.
Lecturio wins ugb award: E-lecture company
Lecturio, founded by HHL alumni Tim Koschella and
Martin Schlichte (both K21), won the ugb founders
award which they received at the futuresax Phase
III finals.
Careers
Other notable news: On October 31, 2009, the
2nd generation of the EO Accelerator program
started in Berlin, again with HHL entrepreneurs.
The goal of the exclusive high-potential program
is to help start-ups gain the abilities to push their
annual revenue beyond the “magic threshold” of
$ 1,000,000. This is done by means of a series
of workshops, networking with successful entrepreneurs and coaching through the experiences
of other growth companies.
The EO Accelerator program, which has already
been available in the USA for quite some time,
was introduced into Germany by HHL alumna
Julia Derndinger (K7 and president of the German chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization)
in 2008 and is supported by Mercedes-Benz
Bank. The acceptance process is highly competitive – and once again several HHL alumni made
it into the program: Tim Koschella and Martin
Schlichte (both K21) with e-lecture portal Lecturio,
Malte Paul (K10) with his online gaming start-up

playnik.com and Sebastian Siebert (K12) with
accessory leasing firm fashionette. Last year,
HHL alumnus Dirk Graber (K15) with online optician Misterspex and Christian Angele (K22) with
his health portal imedo.de also had the opportunity to participate in the program.

B: Clearly, going into an established
market and competing with incumbents is an enormous challenge for
any company in the life science sector. Business plans are a visionary
outlook, but opening the black box of

costs and customer responses after
the first-purchase are essential for the
true understanding of customers’
needs and wants. Transferring market
intelligence into operational excellence and improving products, processes and services are the greatest
challenges for a young biotech company getting off the ground.

B: We deal with the multiple challenges
of a fast-growing start-up company and that is plenty of work. For me
personally, the greatest challenge was
to develop an understanding of the
pharmaceutical industry. We chose to
enter the market very early (in the
veterinary field) – and that was a highly
demanding task in a sector that is full
of administrative hurdles and dominated by research-driven players.

HHL Library offering online tutorials
Ever panicked at midnight because you forgot to renew your books from the library and
did not know how to renew them online?
The HHL Library is now offering an “emergency kit” for this situation and other library and
information search routines: a set of three or
five-minute online tutorials that explain book
renewals, reservations, as well as catalog and
database searches. The English-language tu-
torials are a further key element in the concept of the HHL Library to develop information competency among HHL students and
staff. In addition to on-campus library tutorials the online videos provide help just at the
time the information is needed. They can be
watched on the website of the HHL Library
from any place in the world. The tutorials
have been developed as part of a Diploma
thesis by Silvio Kagemann, a student of Library
and Information Science at the local University
of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig). The HHL
Library team appreciates feedback on the tutorials to further develop the new service.

My way in…
HHL and international – synonyms?
As part of my studies, I was fortunate enough
to live and work in three different countries –
Germany, England, and France. This gave
me the chance to experience three cultures
at first hand, and I’ll always be grateful for
that. After studying International Management and French at the University of Bath in
the UK and working for a year in the financial
sector, I was looking for a new challenge. My
idea was to study something that would not
only offer me a good mix of theory and practice but would also entail an international per-
spective. The basic question was: How to
proceed? After careful consideration of rankings and programs available in the UK and
in Germany, I spoke to a friend, who recommended HHL. There was no question that
HHL had an excellent reputation – but would
it broaden my international horizon? My
doubts were cleared up pretty quickly. During
my visit to HHL and my conversations with
current students, I was overwhelmed by the
open-minded attitude and the “same mind
thinking.” I started the M.Sc. Program in Fall
2009 and since the first day I have had the
chance to engage with people from different
backgrounds. This has been a very rewarding experience and I look forward to my
term abroad, when I will be going to Spain.

Elisa Stein joined HHL in November

Stein worked in Marketing and PR at
a real estate company in Leipzig.
She graduated from the University
of Leipzig with an M.A. in American
Studies, Communication and Media
Sciences, and Sports Science.
During her studies, she spent a year
abroad at the Universitat Autònoma
de Barcelona, Spain.
Together with her Swedish team colleague, Lucretia Löscher (K23) won second place
in the Vestas Winnovation Challenge 2009 in Aarhus (Denmark) in December 2009.

conducted by the Russian edition of the Harvard Business Review in cooperation with
various companies. +++ The four
MSc4 students Dennis Grosche,

regional qualification round of
the KPMG International Case
Competition 2010 in Düsseldorf
in November 2009. Fingers are
crossed for the national qualification round held from March 5-7,
