CONTEXT
Chemical resistance in insects and other
arthropods, the increased legislative restriction of
the pesticide market and other causes such as
anthropogenic factors and the climate change, are
demanding new control technological options
such as protective textiles to manage vector
species and to minimize transmission risk of
medical and veterinary diseases worldwide.
Bedbugs are increasing in Europe, USA, Canada
and Australia. The infestations have been
occurring in a wide range of facilities in the
developed world in recent years including: hotels,
overnight trains, private homes, cruise ships,
schools, hospitals and homeless shelters.
Bedbugs can reduce quality of life by causing
anxiety, discomfort, skin-disorders, sleeplessness,
anemia and even anaphylaxis can also occur.
OBJECTIVES
To develop functional textile materials with protection against bedbugs for home textiles
applications and functional textile materials with protection against ticks for personal protection
in outdoor activities .
To develop and research on environmentally friendly biocides offering protection against ticks
and bedbugs and accepted by the EU Biocides Regulation 528/2012.
To develop innovative finishing technologies (sol-gel, microencapsulation and extrusion) in order
to control the repellent effect and so contributing to a longer lifespan (control-release of the
biocide).
To obtain high durability of the finishing (maintaining the repellence property at least up to 50
washings) by biocide control release (long-lasting biocide treated textiles).
To reduce the use of repellent sprays that are used nowadays (spreading them on the human
body).

Results of BETITEX will contribute to promote a
greener and more competitive economy as the final
textile products will be as sustainable as possible by
means of using natural, biodegradable or recyclable
textile materials in combination with authorized
biocides and by using eco-friendly textile
technologies.
