Pertumbuhan sebanyak 4% bagi industri pelancongan dunia
pada tahun 2012 turut menyakinkan kita bahawa peranan
yang dimainkan oleh industri pelancongan mampu memacu
pertumbuhan ekonomi dunia.
Kita sedia maklum persidangan-persidangan antarabangsa
penganjuran World Tourism Conference 2013 pada bulan
and Pace Setters.
Pemilihan negeri-negeri seperti Melaka dan Sarawak sebagai
lokasi penganjuran persidangan-persidangan antarabangsa
mempunyai kepelbagaian budaya masyarakat berbilang
bangsa.
Sejajar dengan gagasan “We Are The Host” bersempena
pelancongan.

ourist arrivals to Malaysia for the
first half of 2013 continued to soar,
registering a hike of 7.9%. The
country received 12.6 million (12,552,731)
tourists from January to June compared
to 11.6 million (11,632,478) tourists for the
same period last year.
Correspondingly, tourist receipts rose by 16.3%,
contributing RM31.18 billion to the country’s revenue
against RM26.80 billion from January to June 2012.
The top 10 tourist generating markets to Malaysia from
January to June 2013 were Singapore (6,295,567),
Indonesia (1,242,055), China (943,756), Brunei (593,536),
Thailand (581,683), India (348,309), the Philippines
(277,378), Japan (250,293), Australia (250,123), and the
United Kingdom (211,286).
The ASEAN region continued to be the largest contributor
of tourist arrivals with 73.3% share (9.2 million) of the total
arrivals.
Cambodia registered the highest growth of 42.3%,
followed by Myanmar (+19.9%), the Philippines (+16.5%),
Indonesia (+12.1%), Vietnam (+10.3%), Singapore
(+7.9%) and Brunei (+0.9%).
The establishment of new tourism products in Johor and
the increase of flight frequencies from the ASEAN region
played a major role in the growth of tourist arrivals from
these markets.
Nevertheless, Thailand and Laos recorded a negative
growth of 8.9% and 5.3% respectively. The drop in
arrivals from Thailand was possibly due to the effect of
unrest in the southern region and the competitive offers
by airlines to other destinations like China, South Korea
and Singapore, which were more appealing to the Thais.
The medium-haul markets contributed 19.6% or 2.5
million tourists to Malaysia’s total arrivals.
(+13%) while tourist arrivals from Australia increased by
3.1%.
The upsurge of arrivals from China was due to the increase
of AirAsia X and MAS flights from China and Hong Kong,
as well as aggressive promotions by both wholesalers and
airlines.
FACTS AND FIGURES
MALAYSIA’S JANUARY-JUNE 2013
TOURIST ARRIVALS SHOW POSITIVE GROWTH OF 7.9%
Nevertheless, a few markets recorded a decline in tourist
arrivals namely Iran (-44.2%), New Zealand (-8.1%), India
(-4.6%), UAE (-4%), South Korea (-3.6%) and Saudi
Arabia (-2.7%).
The drop from the Middle East market was due to the shift
in school holidays and the fasting month, as well as the
competition from European destinations, which attracted
many Middle Eastern travellers. However, the decline of
arrivals from India was due to the depreciation of Indian
Rupee compared to US Dollar in the last three months.
Tourist arrivals from the long-haul markets reached
890,000 in the first half of 2013, constituting 7.1% of the
total arrivals to Malaysia.
The country’s success in attracting more tourists from the
long-haul markets was due to the long winter season in
Europe and better connectivity offered by a few airlines
namely Turkish Airlines (Stockholm-Kuala Lumpur via
Istanbul; 3 times weekly; beginning 25 Apr 2013), MAS
(Kuala Lumpur-Paris by A380; starting 1 March 2013),
and Air France/KLM (Paris-Kuala Lumpur; 3 times weekly;
effective 23 March 2013).
Tourist arrivals from Sweden and Russia recorded a
double-digit growth of 21.9% and 20.2% respectively,
followed by France (+9.7%), Italy (+7.8%), United
Kingdom (+7.4%), Germany (+6.5%), Canada (+6.5%),
USA (+6.4%), Kazakhstan (+5.3%), and the Netherlands
(+0.5%).
Only South Africa recorded a drop of 9.3%. The
continuous decline of arrivals from South Africa was due
to the decrease of the Rand exchange rate compared to
the US Dollar.
China registered a double-digit growth of 24.5% and so
did Taiwan (+22.5%), Japan (+15.9%), and Sri Lanka

The event, which is held at Thistle Hotel beach area, is
a public-private collaboration project between Ministry
of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia and world-renowned

create awareness on the issues faced by beaches around
the world, besides cultivating sense of belonging towards
nation’s tourism assets and promote unity and goodwill
among Malaysians.
“Besides collecting rubbish, this volunteering activity, in
particular, also gathers data on types of rubbish collected
and that data would help to analyse factors why people
dumped the rubbish at that particular area and find ways to
overcome the situation”, said Deputy Secretary General
of the Ministry, Dr. Junaida Lee Abdullah said during the
launching of the event.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of The Body Shop, Datin
Mina Cheah Foong said that The Body Shop has been
actively doing the clean-up activity, locally, for the past
19 years. “This year, we are pleased to team up with
the Ministry of Tourism and Culture as well as BluInc
Media, Permanis and the Thistle Hotel. Together with the
1Malaysia Voluntourism initiative, we are really hoping to
achieve 1Malaysia Green, 1Malaysia Clean,” she said.
The Ministry hoped that by having such activity, more
people will take the initiative to come together with their

UNWTO Secretary-General, Dr. Taleb Rifai in a message.
He said that the conference will benefit not only tourism
industry players but also policy makers and other
stakeholders to reap tourism’s immense potential through
sharing of experiences and knowledge in tourism planning,

He said that tourism is one of the world’s biggest generators
of employment and export earnings as well as a key driver
for economic growth and sustainable development.

EVENT
MALAYSIAN OPEN,
KUALA LUMPUR CELEBRATES
ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY
013 marked the fifth year anniversary
tournament for Malaysian Open, Kuala
Lumpur, and the many things it has
achieved since 2009. As part of ATP World
Tour 250, this tennis extravaganza is well
supported by both local and foreign tennis
fraternity every year, and has become a
highly popular and favorite stop off on the
ATP World Tour.
2
This year, the event was held at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil
from September 21 until September 29. Among singles
playing Kuala Lumpur this time include world number 4,
David Ferrer, no. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka, Nicolas Almagro,
Jurgen Melzer, Julien Benneteau, Vasek Pospisil, Dmitry
Tursunov, Marcos Baghdatis, Federico Delbonis, Adrian
Mannarino, Pablo Andujar and Joao Sousa.
It was an icing on the cake for Joao Sousa when he earned
his first career ATP World Tour singles title with a 2-6, 7-5,
6-4 victory over fifth seed Julien Benneteau during the
final round on September 29, 2013. Sousa saved a match
point while serving at 30-40, training 2-6, 4-5.
This achievement makes Sousa the first Portuguese
player to win an ATP World Tour title. The 24-year-old will
also become the highest ranked Portuguese player ever
as he is projected to climb from No. 77 to a career-high
No. 51 when the Emirates ATP Rankings are released on
September 30, 2013.

Sousa took home the winner’s purse of US$158,000
(RM509,933), which was presented by Tourism and
Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles final, Eric Butorac (United

the title. The pair received USD48,000 (RM154,848) in prize
money which was presented by Youth and Sports Minister
Khairy Jamaluddin.
Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia as the main
strategic partner for the event, sees sports tourism as
a very important component of modern day tourism
marketing and Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2013 is
one of the best platform to showcase the best of Malaysia,
not only to the players, media and fans who travel here for
the tournament but also to the millions who able to follow
the progress of their favorite players through worldwide
television broadcasts, internet coverage as well as
dedicated event website. The Ministry will continue the
effort to strongly promote high quality sports.
How ATP WORLD TOUR 250 begins
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) was
formed in September 1972 by Donald Dell, Jack
Kramer, and Cliff Drysdale to protect the interests of
male professional tennis players. Drysdale became
the first President. Since 1990, the association has
organized the worldwide tennis tour for men and
linked the title of the tour with the organization’s name.
In 1990 the organization was called the ATP Tour,
which was renamed in 2001 as just ATP and the tour
being called ATP Tour. In 2009 the name was changed
again and is now known as the ATP World Tour. It is
an evolution of the tour competitions previously
known as Grand Prix tennis tournaments and World
Championship Tennis (WCT). The ATP’s Executive
Offices are in London, United Kingdom. ATP Americas is
based in Ponte Vedra Beach, United States; ATP Europe
is headquartered in Monaco; and ATP International,
which covers Africa, Asia and Australasia, is based
in Sydney, Australia. The counterpart organization in
the women’s professional game is the Women’s Tennis
Association (WTA).

VISIT MALAYSIA
YEAR 2014
Campaign Launched In Northern China
T
ourism Malaysia has launched the
Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY)
campaign on September 18 in Urumqi,
the capital city of Xinjiang, North-western
China, to create awareness of VMY 2014
to the travel trade fraternity and media in
Xinjiang.
The promotion of VMY 2014 in Northern China is further
strengthened with the launch of three new tourism
packages to Malaysia in this market which focuses on
heritage, nature and -- due to the large Muslim population
here -- halal tourism. These packages will be sold
beginning the fourth quarter of this year right until the end
of 2014.
The new packages are:
1. Kuala Lumpur + Penang + Langkawi Tour (including
Penang history, heritage and cuisine tour, Langkawi
Paya Island tour);
2. Kuala Lumpur + Kota Kinabalu 7-day Tour (Tunku Abdul
Rahman Marine Park and Mount Kinabalu experience);
and
3. Halal Tour (Kuala Lumpur + Terengganu + Redang
Island + Putrajaya Halal tour; 7-day tour with visits
to various mosques, local homestay experience and
Redang Island).
In heavily promoting VMY 2014, the Tourism Malaysia
delegation will also meet the media through press
conferences and press interviews, and meet with local
tourism administration officers and major travel agents.
A special lunch will be hosted for local tourism officers,
major outbound tour operators and local media in order
to raise awareness of the grand celebration next year and
to thank them for their continuous support in promoting
Malaysia.
This Urumqi trip follows Tourism Malaysia’s meeting
with top tour operators in Beijing earlier in September
to discuss China’s tourism law which is implemented on
October 1st, 2013. The implementation of the tourism law
is expected to impact the type of tours offered in Malaysia
to China tourists and is a chance for Malaysia to sell itself
as a single destination and as a high-end holiday choice.
China has been a very important source market for
inbound tourists to Malaysia. Last year Malaysia received
1,558,785 Chinese tourists, indicating an increase by
24.6% from 1,250,536 in 2011.
Arrivals from this market continue to increase rapidly
this year; the first half of the year has recorded 943,756
arrivals from China, an increase of 24.5% from the same
period in 2012. Malaysia has set a target of 1.7 million
tourists from China market.
Background:
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is a provincial level
Autonomous Region located in North-western China, with
a population of more than 21.4 million, among whom more
than 10 million are Muslims. For tourists from Xinjiang,
“Thailand + Singapore + Malaysia” tour packages have
been one of the first choices of overseas tours. Tourism
Malaysia is working closely with local outbound agents
to heavily promote more Malaysia tour packages that
introduce new destinations and products to the local
market.

MALAYSIAN BEACHES ON CNN TOP LIST
ETALING JAYA: Three beaches in Malaysia have
recently made it to the top 50 beaches of the
World’s 100 best beaches survey conducted by
international news network CNN.
P
Making the list are Perhentian Kecil Island in Terengganu at 13th place,
Juara Beach in Pahang’s Tioman Island (21) and Tanjung Rhu in Langkawi
(49).
The list, which is compiled from various sources, takes into account
feedback from travellers, colleagues and readers as well as on-site visits
and research, CNN said on its website.
It said that most tourists in Langkawi flock to Cenang Beach but Tanjung
Rhu has an earthy beauty and serene atmosphere.
The long beach in Tanjung Rhu is surrounded by ancient limestone caves,
rippling waterways and dense mangroves.
“We love Langkawi for the breathtaking view atop Gunung Mat Cincang,
one of the island’s highest mountains,” it added.
As for Juara Beach, it was less developed and less polished than Thailand,
but it brought an all-natural, quiet vibe to the beach experience.
“This isn’t a place for parties or nightlife, unless you like your parties hushed
and your nightlife non-human,” quoted CNN.
Tioman Island is a great place for adrenaline junkies who want a rock
climbing challenge at Nenek Semukut Mountain.
The highlight of Perhentian Kecil Island is its blue waters, which invariably
contain turtles and small sharks.
However, Tourism Malaysia gave a different set of best Malaysian beaches
according to locals.
The best beaches and islands are Sipadan Island, Mabul and Kapalai in
Sabah, Tourism Malaysia said in a press release.
Sipadan is an internationally famous dive site surrounded by the Sulawesi
sea and the geographic position of Sipadan at the Indo-Pacific Basin (the
centre of the richest marine habitat in the world) makes it a paradise for
divers, it said.
The seascape is decorated with huge gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges
and gigantic soft tree corals.
To preserve the delicate ecosystem, accommodation is only provided at the
neighbouring Mabul and Kapalai islands and tours must be pre-arranged.
“Malaysia has hundreds of island dotting its waters and some of the world’s
best islands and beaches can be found here,” said Tourism Malaysia.
In Peninsular Malaysia, Cherating Beach in Pahang, Redang Island and
Lang Tengah Island in Terengganu, and Pangkor Island in Perak are the
most popular among the locals, it added.

Jualan Kraf Tangan Cecah
RM341.9j
KUALA LUMPUR 30 Sept. - Industri kraf
tempatan berjaya merekodkan jualan
RM341.9 juta pada tahun lepas berbanding
RM143.5 juta pada 2011 iaitu peningkatan
sebanyak 138 peratus walaupun hanya
6,783 pengusaha industri itu yang aktif di
negara ini.
Menteri Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan, Datuk Seri
Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz berkata, statistik itu
membuktikan betapa industri kraf mempunyai potensi
untuk berkembang dan mampu memberi pulangan
lumayan setelah lebih 366 aktiviti pemasaran dan promosi
di peringkat domestik dan antarabangsa dilaksanakan
Kraftangan Malaysia.
“Hasil usaha ini telah berjaya meningkatkan nilai jualan
kraf tempatan daripada RM143.5 juta pada tahun 2011
kepada RM341.9 juta pada tahun 2012 manakala nilai
jualan kraf yang direkodkan pada tahun ini sehingga Ogos
lalu adalah sebanyak RM293.5 juta,” katanya selepas
menyempurnakan majlis perasmian Promosi Hiasan
Dalaman dan Seni Taman 2013 di Kompleks Kraf di sini
hari ini.
Yang turut hadir, Timbalan Ketua Setiausaha (Kebudayaan)
Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan, Datuk Abdul
Ghaffar Ab Thambi; Pengerusi Kraftangan Malaysia,
Datuk Sohaimi Shahadan dan Ketua Pengarah Kraftangan
Malaysia, Mohd. Kamil Mohd. Ali.
Mohamed Nazri berkata, industri kraf tempatan khususnya
aneka kraf.
- Utusan Malaysia, 1 Oktober 2013
“Kita sasarkan Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2014 menerima
jumlah kunjungan pelancong asing seramai 28 juta orang
aktiviti pelancongan.
