Venice is home to just under 300,000 people and is the cap­
ital of the Veneto region. The commune consists of the his­
toric centre with an area of some 7 square kilometres and
the majority of the lagoon with 50 or so islands. The munici­
pality is divided into the six districts (sestieri) of the histor­
ic centre: to the right of the Canal Grande are San Polo, Dor­
soduro and Santa Croce; to the left, San Marco, Cannaregio
and Castello. In addition, it also contains the central and
northern sections of the lagoon with numerous islands, in­
cluding Murano with its glass­blowing industry, the north­
eastern trio of islands – Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello – to­
gether with the islands of Sant’Erasmo and Vignole (both
famous for their vegetables) and the cemetery island of San
Michele.
Brücken und Kanäle
Durch Venedig fliessen ungefähr 175 Kanäle mit einer
Gesamtlänge von rund 38 Kilometern, darüber wurden

Campanile von San Marco auf 100 000 und die Kirche

Venedig und seine Lagune stehen seit 1987 auf der
UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes.
Bridges and canals
Approximately 175 canals flow through Venice with an over­
all length of around 38 kilometres; these are spanned by an
estimated 444 bridges. The entire city is constructed on oak,
larch and elm piles driven into the underlying ground to
provide support for the wooden pontoons upon which rest
the foundation walls of the buildings. The Rialto Bridge is
said to stand on 12,000 piles, the campanile of San Marco
on 100,000 and the church of Santa Maria della Salute sup­
posedly rests on roughly 1.1 million of them. Venice and its
lagoon have been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site
since 1987.

After its masterly renovation
by Tadao Ando, this former
customs post is staging an exhi­
bition entitled “Elogio del
Dubbio” until the end of Decem­
ber this year. Alongside historical
pieces, it is displaying new works
by 20 artists devoted to the sub­
ject of doubt. Donald Judd is
showing clean­cut and apparent­
ly inviolable sculptures in
steel, Jeff Koons a gigantic red
heart suspended from a golden
bow and Subodh Gupta works
that include two enormous metal
spoons.
