Welcome to the August 2008 edition of the DAAD Australia newsletter!
The focus of this edition of our newsletter is on funding schemes and bringing attention to
approaching deadlines for applications. We've also attempted to inspire with some great
news about a previous DAAD scholar and some interesting German cultural developments.

Sehr zu unserem Bedauern sind Elisabeth Meister und Monica Michalla nicht länger in
unserem DAAD-Team. Elisabeth arbeitet weiterhin beim Goethe-Institut und widmet sich
ansonsten verstärkt ihrem Wunschjob Übersetzen. Moni, der wir zum frischen Masters in
International Relations von der Macquarie University gratulieren, arbeitet jetzt als Market
Research Analyst im Marketing bei Bayer. Wir hier, beim DAAD, wünschen den beiden das
Allerbeste und viel Erfolg! Der Neuzugang in unserem Team ist der sehr nette und
kompetente australische Medienspezialist und Theaterkuenstler Ahilan Ratnamohan, der seit
Juli mit vielen von Ihnen bereits in Kontakt steht.
Much to our regret, Elisabeth Meister and Monica Michalla will no longer be with the DAADTeam. Elisabeth is continuing to work with the Goethe-Institut and concentrating on her
dream-job in translation. Moni, whom we congratulate on her new Masters’ degree in
International Relations from Macquarie University, is now working as a Market Research
Analyst in the Marketing-team at Bayer. All of us here wish the both of them all the best and
much success! The new signing in the DAAD-team is the very friendly and able Australian
media specialist and Performance Artist, Ahilan Ratnamohan, who since July has already
been in contact with many of you.
Call for Applications: University Winter Courses – Hochschulwinterkurse
Deadline: August 15
In co-operation with the DAAD, the Universities of Freiburg, Leipzig and Essen as well as the
Freie Universitaet Berlin offer students with a sound knowledge of German (B2 minimum) a
unique opportunity to improve their language skills and understanding of contemporary
affairs. The scholarship includes airfares, accommodation and tuition fees for the
Deutschlandkundlicher Winterkurs which takes place in January and February, 2009.

Call for Applications: Germanic Studies Scholarship – Germanistenstipendium

Deadline: August 31
Students studying Germanic studies, German as a foreign language or translation studies are
encouraged to apply for the DAAD’s one-semester exchange scholarships. Successful
students will receive around $1000 per month to complete part of their degree at a German
university or higher education institution.

Call for Applications: Study Scholarships for Graduates of All Disciplines

Graduates seeking to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree at a German higher
education Institution have the chance to apply for a 10-24 month scholarship from the DAAD.
The scholars will receive up to $1300 per month in addition to travel costs and health
insurance, as well as other subsidies where appropriate. The DAAD calls on excellently
qualified graduates who, at the latest when they commence their scholarship-supported
studies, hold a first degree (Bachelor's, Honours or comparable academic degree). While
good German skills are looked upon highly, this is not an absolute must for those who will be
studying a course in English.

Call for Applications: Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates, Young Academics and
Scientists
The Humboldt
schemes
Germany is highly regarded as one of the most advanced countries in the field of research.
The DAAD offers esteemed university graduates holding a (research) Master’s or Honours
degree, and in exceptional cases post-doctorates, grants for up to 12 months to carry out a
research project. Research graduates will be paid up to $1600 per month, depending on
qualifications, and must provide confirmation of their placement with a host in Germany. This
funding scheme aims to help and assist doctorate candidates.
This grant is divided into two categories, short-term stays (1 up to 6 months, for stays to run
from February 2009) and long-term stays up to 12 months (for stays to run from October
2009), which can be extended up to 24 months.

Call for Applications: Scholarship for Artists

Artists from fields such as Fine Art, Design, Film, Music and Architecture, including Drama,
Direction, Dance and Choreography have the opportunity to receive study-scholarships which
aim to provide Australian artists with a chance to further their studies in their chosen field,
without necessarily gaining a formal degree or qualification. The program is flexible in terms
of institutions where the training/study can be undertaken and scholarships are generally
awarded for 12 months, though extensions of up to 24 months are possible.

Go8 Australia – Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme
Deadline for second application round for exchanges in 2009 and 2010: August 22
This scheme is a joint initiative of the Go8 and the DAAD. It aims to foster research
collaboration of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and
German researchers to result in research outcomes and the exchange of skills and
knowledge of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.
The scheme will support exchanges whereby Australian researchers spend time at partner
institutions in Germany, while collaborating German researchers spend time at Go8
universities in Australia. In funding this, the Go8 and the DAAD have each agreed to provide
approximately 160,000 Euros (AUD 250,000) per year for the period 2008-2010 to support
the initiative.
Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching
and research, or research-only role at a Go8 university, or be PhD student involved in a
research project submitted by an eligible staff member. Applications for exchanges in 2009

Thankfully, we can now again also offer all academics and scientists a scheme to fund
research projects:
Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists
These grants and scholarships aim to provide Australian academics and scientists working in
higher education or at research institutes with an opportunity to carry out a one to three
months research project at a state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution or
non-university research institute in Germany.
As with most other DAAD schemes, the application deadline is September 30. To find out

funding to be able to offer 12 days filled with exciting opportunities for students in the fields of
law, politics, international relations, European studies or similar subjects wanting to improve

Alexander von Humboldt-Professorship: second round of Germany’s
most valuable international research award; the research conditions you have always
dreamed of. Valued at up to five million Euros, the award attracts the best researchers to
Germany.
Germany: A DAAD
The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, an International Award for Research in
Germany, has been created to allow award winners to spend five years working on groundbreaking research at German universities. Non-university research institutions may submit
joint nominations with a German university.

Advanced Materials Science
International Graduate Studies in the Munich Area - Chemistry and Physics
from the Atomic Level to the Nanoscale and Beyond
The interdisciplinary program ‘Advanced Materials Science’ offers to excellent students with degrees
in chemistry, physics or materials a multi-faceted training in materials science, covering the range
from atomic dimensions and nanoparticles to macroscopic matter. This program is a part of the Elite
Network of Bavaria and takes place at two of the three first announced Elite Universities in
Germany, the University of Munich, the Technical University of Munich and the nearby University of
Augsburg. All classes are held in English; the semester fees are limited to € 500.
The program features small classes, intensive tutoring, project work, presentations by renowned
international guest speakers, a winter school, and extensive practical training at leading industrial
R&D units and production sites. A Master’s Degree can be earned in only three semesters, followed
by an optional Doctoral Thesis.

Augsburg and Munich offer many cultural highlights and major events. They are located close to the
Alps in one of the most beautiful parts of southern Germany. Nearby lakes can be reached easily by

„Spaghetti“ oder „Spagetti“ – aktuelle Rechtschreibreform ein Jahr in Kraft
Sie ist bei vielen Menschen in Deutschland wenig beliebt und so wird es wohl noch länger
bleiben: Die Rechtschreibreform löst auch ein Jahr nach ihrem offiziellen Start Unbehagen
und Unsicherheit aus. Dabei war am 1. August 2007 ein vereinfachtes Regelwerk
verbindlich in Kraft getreten. Ursprünglich hatten die mit dem Vorhaben betrauten Experten
viel stärker in die Schreibweise der deutschen Sprache eingreifen wollen.
Ob „kennenlernen“ oder „kennen lernen“, Schiffahrt, Schifffahrt oder Schiff-Fahrt,
überschwenglich oder überschwänglich - wer im Alltag viel schreibt, muss noch heute
häufig zum Wörterbuch greifen, aber die neue Regelung lässt dem Einzelnen mehr
Freiheiten als früher. Und die Geschichte mit dem scharfen s/sz (ß) ist klarer geworden –
nach kurzem Vokal Doppel-s (Fluss, Kuss, ich muss), nach langem Vokal bleibt das scharfe
s (Fußball, gießen). Wer also ein Wort hört oder weiß, wie man’s spricht, kann richtig
schreiben. Und wer weiß, wie man’s schreibt, kann das Wort richtig aussprechen.
Barrie Kosky and Liza Lim zurueck in Australien
Barrie Kosky, der zukünftige Chef der Komischen Oper Berlin, ist erst
mal zurück in Australien, um bei die Premiere seiner neuesten Oper The
Navigator, komponiert von der Australierin Liza Lim, Regie zu führen.
Der in Melbourne geborene Kosky war Künstlerischer Leiter der Gilgul
Theatre Company und des Adelaide Festivals, bevor er an die
Opernhäuser in Essen, Berlin und der Hauptstadt der Theaterliebhaber Wien ging. Sein
Erfolg machte ihn überall in den deutschsprachigen Ländern bekannt. 2012 übernimmt er
den Chefsessel der Komischen Oper Berlin. The Navigator hat gerade beim Brisbane
Festival Prämiere gefeiert und war total ausverkauft. The Navigator ist noch einmal zu
sehen, dieses Mal beim Melbourne International Arts Festival vom 9. bis zum 12. Oktober
und ist sicher sehenswert.

Liza Lim war bis zum Sommer als Artist in Residency Gast des Berliner Künstlerprogramms
des DAAD. Hier komponierte sie die Oper "The Navigator", die am 30. Juli in Brisbane
uraufgeführt wurde. Die Oper ist der vorläufige Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens.
Die bewegende Geschichte um Liebe und Transformation speist sich aus
dem indischen Epos „Mahabharata" und Motiven um "Tristan und Isolde".
Deutsche Musikfreunde konnten Teile des neuen Werkes schon im Frühjahr
in Berlin live erleben. "Das Jahr in Berlin gehört zu den kreativsten meiner
bisherigen Laufbahn", sagt die international renommierte Komponistin, die
1966 geboren wurde.

1908/2008. Vor 100 Jahren - Kandinsky, Münter, Jawlensky, Werefkin in Murnau

Im August 1908 kam eine besondere Künstlergruppe aus München zu einem Mal-Aufenthalt
nach Murnau: Kandinsky und Co. entwickelten eine neue expressive Malerei, die
europäische Kunsttraditionen nachhaltig veränderte. In und von Murnau und seiner
abwechslungsreichen Umgebung entstanden 1908 und in der Folgezeit viele dieser
ausdrucksstarken, für den deutschen Expressionismus charakteristischen und
wegweisenden Werke, von denen sich heute viele in bedeutenden Sammlungen der ganzen
Welt befinden. Erstmalig werden diese Werke für die Sonderausstellung im Schlossmuseum
Murnau wieder zusammengeführt:

Babylon. Mythos und Wahrheit

Mit dieser großen Ausstellung im Pergamonmuseum zeigen die
Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin den Mythos Babel und die Wahrheit
um das antike Babylon. Es werden erstmals die babylonischen
Schätze aus den Universalmuseen der Welt in einer Ausstellung
gemeinsam präsentiert. Die Ausstellung steht unter der

Ruhr Triennale 2008

Das Motto der diesjährigen Ruhr Triennale lautet: Aus der Fremde. Das Festival beschäftigt
sich mit unterschiedlichsten Erfahrungen und Wahrnehmungen des Fremdseins: Migration,
Exil und Entfremdung – sich selbst und anderen gegenüber. Vom 22. August bis zum 5.
Oktober werden über 30 Produktionen und Vorstellungen aus den Bereichen Schauspiel,
Musik, Tanz und Literatur in den eindrucksvollen Industriehallen des Ruhrgebiets gezeigt:
